Blues Helpers I am writing in response to Gary Singh’s column of July 11 (“Blues Valley”), about San Jose Blues Week. I believe that Gary did a marvelous job of capturing the spirit of San Jose Blues Week in his column.

However, as much as San Jose Blues Week has been a one-man operation, I have had the support of so many who should be mentioned. In addition to San Jose City Councilman Sam Liccardo’s office (Margret Le was a big help), I would like to thank Celia Miller and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed’s office, Rick Jensen, Amy Anderson and everyone at the San Jose Downtown Association, Bruce Labadie, Massimo Chisessi and San Jose Jazz, Jay Meduri and the staff at the Poor House Bistro, Johnny Perkins and the staff at J.J.’s Blues Club, and all of the venues that have participated in San Jose Blues Week, KSJS-FM (90.5), Ted Gehrke (my mentor) and the Associated Students of San Jose State, and Broadway San Jose, who injected some much-needed cash at the last minute!

Into the Wild Thank you for Alastair Bland’s article Delta Blues (SVNEWS, July 11). As an employee with the Department of Fish & Game, I work closely with the state, the fish markets and fishermen (and women) who have studied these iconic species for decades. Many consumers and amateur fishers do not realize that hatcheries produce the majority of the Chinook populations and that very, very few

are in fact “wild salmon.” The DFG regulations and monitoring tactics for our salmon populations are impeccable. However, the requirements for sustaining a bountiful and economically dependable ﬁshery for a species faced with ultimate habitat destruction can never make everyone happy—therefore DFG is constantly accused for the salmon tragedy. It’s an honest case of biting the hand that feeds. The true culprits are those mandating water rights to regions that had no viable sources to begin with. I encourage every consumer to turn their attention to the disastrous effects rerouting waterways has already had on countless species, ecosytems and ultimately our local economies. In fact, the entire Western linear concept of time is irrelevant in Alviso, so much that even the buses won’t go there in the daytime. Now, however, a grand collaboration between East and

West, an epic transnational congress of two cultures, a visionary transfer of energy, has emerged, unparalleled in its visionary scope. At least for Alviso, I mean. Right across Tony P. Santos Street from the elementary school, in the old house formerly owned and occupied by the Santos family, one now ﬁnds a Hindu place of worship in its initial stages. Construction for the Balaji Temple is underway, and the grand-opening ceremony went down just over one month ago. The facility is a spiritual nonproﬁt Hindu Temple dedicated to sharing the universal truth of the Vedas and the Upanishads of India. The house itself originally existed near the San Jose airport, near Coleman, on the frontage road that branched off from Highway 880, which was then part of Highway

17. The home was originally slotted for destruction in lieu of airport expansion when Tony P. Santos purchased it in 1959. Most of the old family homes in Alviso are move-ons, transplants, so Santos transported the building it to its current location at 5004 N. First St. Historically, the Santos family is the grand royal bloodline of Alviso, undiluted by anyone. The family originally came to Alviso from Portugal via Hawaii. Sixty years ago, Tony P. Santos was simultaneously mayor and chief of police. His brother had also been chief and his father had previously operated the levees and the city dump. The family owned most of the land and essentially ran the whole damn town. Santos passed away in 2004 and a street was then named after him. His son, also named Tony, grew up in the family house, beginning in 1960. He still lives in Alviso, manages an RV storage facility and stages classic-car shows. The next generation appears in the form of a third Tony, the hero that currently owns and

operates Lunch With Tony, a simple restaurant with cheap gourmet food. I recommend the breakfast burrito. After Tony P. Santos, the grandfather, passed away, the family put the home up for sale. Balaji Matha, a nonproﬁt spiritual organization, wanted to build a Hindu Temple and Vedic Cultural Center where people can come together to study and worship, regardless of background. They jumped at the opportunity to purchase the former Santos family home. So far, the community has welcomed them. The current elder Tony gave me the lowdown on the new Hindu temple. Rather than treating them like exotic intruders from the East, Santos says the community has accepted the temple, and the temple has alread already proved it respects the communi community very much. There is no reveng revenge for the Portuguese colonizing India 500 years ago. “What more would you want to have right next to a school then a religious ffacility?” Santos told me. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very welcome ssite in our community. To me, it’s an honor having something religious where my parents lived. I really like that. Not that my parents were over-religious, but I think it’s wonderful.” The architecture of the temple features all the turrets and swirling imagery one would expect. Construction is still taking place, but the temple is open for worship. Santos says the building blends in perfectly. “They did a remarkable job,” he said. “Usually when you have a small area like this, developers come in, they want to make money and leave you with all the problems. [The temple] came in, they spent their money, and they’re here to stay. They’ve done everything ﬁrstclass.” In Alviso, time does not have a beginning, middle or an end. Instead, the Hindu concept of time makes more sense. Time is relative, eternal and cyclical. May East and West continue to merge and may Alviso continue to be timeless.

The South Bay’s craft beer scene is catering to a burgeoning taste for ﬁne, hand-crafted brews BY ANDY LEE Y MOST memorable beer experience occurred in February 2011 during the second annual Meet the South Bay Brewers Beer Festival at San Jose’s Hermitage Brewing Company. OR fans of craft brew, this is a great time to be in the 408 and 650. I borrowed that line from Greg Sonick, craft beer brand manager for DBI Beverage, a South Bay beer distributor. This year craft brew sales for the company have jumped 72 percent over last year, and we’re only halfway through 2012. The dynamic, artisanal beer movement that has come to be known as craft brew is now ﬂourishing in the South Bay. In our second annual beer issue, we raise a glass to celebrate the arrival of craft brew in Silicon Valley. Beer writer Andy Lee surveys the past, present and future of Silicon Valley’s brew scene and writes about San Jose’s highly anticipated Original Gravity craft brewpub. I take a look at San Jose’s Hermitage Brewing Co., a pioneer and innovator in South Bay beer. We are enjoying a perfect storm of good beer in Silicon Valley—boutique breweries (Hermitage Brewing Co., Strike

Brewing Co.), brewpubs (the Tied House, Gordon Biersch, Faultline, Firehouse, Los Gatos Brewing Co. and others), beer-centric pubs (Rose and Crown, Harry’s Hofbrau, Jack’s bar), well-stocked corner stores and specialty shops (Kelly’s Liquors, Wine Affairs), great beer events (Kraftbrew, Beerwalk), a South Bay beer blog (betterbeerblog.com) and, most importantly, a populace that is increasingly choosing high-quality premium beer over low-quality cheap beer. I tried a refreshing Tied House Brewery wheat beer that served as a prelude to the Campbell Brewing hefeweizen with its pleasant combination of sweetness and bitterness. After talking with the pourers, many of whom were actually the brewers making the beers, I opted for unfamiliar beer styles next, like the Uncommon Brewers organic brown ale with its flavor profile of roasted nuts and a welcoming slight bitterness, followed by Seabright Brewery’s oatmeal stout, which poured black and smooth with hints of dark chocolate. Finally, there was the Faultline Brewery porter, a dark beer that smelled and tasted of roasted coffee. In April 2011, the first KraftBrew Beer Fest, at the historic San Jose Woman’s Club, I tried an even larger selection of different styles of domestic and international beers. From our ventures to local beer

events, we learned what a luxury it is to not have to drive at least 45 minutes in order to try out the latest highly touted beer.

Craft Movement “Craft beer” refers to beer made by a “small, independent, and traditional” brewing company. More beer drinkers are trying craft beer and learning about the various aspects that make such brews more compelling than the beers made most often by the big companies. And according to recent numbers released by the Brewers Association in March, the U.S. craft brewing industry continues to grow in volume and dollar sales even as overall beer volume sales are down. The valley has seen a number of recent developments that highlight

the increasing popularity of craft beer within our region, from the popular and successful beer festivals taking place to the growth of local brewing companies like Hermitage and Strike, as well as a new San Jose brewery that is in the works. The Bay Brewers Guild, a collective of brewers representing the South Bay and nearby Santa Cruz and Monterey areas, is taking shape, while the spotlight on the beers made at our local brewpubs and the brewers who make them grows brighter. More establishments are offering craft beer in the South Bay than ever before, with a growing number of knowledgeable staff. Restaurant James Randall in Los Gatos has joined California Cafe (both the Palo Alto and Los Gatos locations) in hosting beer dinner events. With craft beer’s growing popularity, more

and more folks are interested in homebrewing and joining homebrew clubs. “We receive several inquiries a month from new homebrewers … where even just a year ago inquiries were much more infrequent,” says Derek Wolfgram, president of the homebrew club Silicon Valley Sudzers. And there is a growing list of craft-beer-centric businesses that have just opened or are set to open this year. In downtown San Jose, the list includes Original Gravity Public House craft beer bar, ISO: Beers craft beer bar and tasting lounge and Blackbird Tavern. In Campbell, there is Liquid Bread beer bar. In Mountain View, Jane’s Beer Store, the South Bay’s ﬁrst specialty beer store, and Steins Beer Garden + Restaurant.

fans might be surprised to learn that the South Bay had its share of early breweries as cited in the 1992 book The Bars of Santa Clara County: A Beer Drinker’s Guide to Silicon Valley, co-written by Bay Area beer scribe Jay Brooks and Karen Knezevich. These breweries included Eagle Brewery (San Jose, 1853), Fredericksburg Brewery (San Jose, 1856) and other San Jose breweries opening between 1875 and 1905: San Jose Brewery, Louis Krumb’s Brewery and the St. Claire Brewing Company. However, after breweries such as these closed, there were no local South Bay breweries until the mid-1980s. Breweries like Winchester Brewery and Palo Alto Brewing Company would come and go, but not before making their impact. Pete’s Wicked Ales launched in 1986 in Mountain View thanks to Palo Alto

Brewing Company and Bob Stoddard, whom “Pete” Slosberg refers to as “one of the ﬁrst, true pioneers” in craft brewing. Stoddard would later open his Brewhouse & Eatery in Sunnyvale in 1993 (now FireHouse Grill & Brewery) and in Campbell in 2002 (now Campbell Brewing Company/ Sonoma Chicken Coop). Mountain View’s Tied House Brewery opened in 1988, the same year that Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch opened the ﬁrst Gordon Biersch brewery restaurant in Palo Alto. The second Gordon Biersch opened in downtown San Jose in 1990, replacing a brewpub that had closed in four months, proving in part that South Bay native Gordon (“Born in San Jose.

Ryan Sebastian, owner of Treatbot and Moveable Feast, has a passion for open markets that attract families. He started Treatbot, a karaoke ice cream truck, in 2010, followed by the opening of Moveable Feast in 2011. This isn’t the first time Sebastian has teamed up with the staff of San Jose Made, a vendor fair where San Jose–based brands display their work. They worked together to create the outdoor food truck market SJ Eats. “We found that working together has been the perfect match for us,” Sebastian says. For the Night Market, Sebastian was inspired by the open-air night markets found in Asian countries, specifically the ones located in Taiwan. He envisioned opening the same type of late-night market experience for the Bay Area. The Berryessa location is currently confirmed for most of this year’s season for the Night Market, starting from opening day and running Saturdays until Sept. 10. About 40–50 cultural or nonfood vendors will be at the Night Market, along with 15–20 Asian-themed trucks. No names have been revealed yet. The Night Market is expecting about 4,000 to 5,000 attendees. Sebastian chose the Berryessa location over opening in downtown San Jose in order to accommodate what he thinks will be a very large crowd. since they changed their name. Rather just playing a goofy hybrid of punk, ska and indie rock, the Stomas are kicking out some solid rock tunes in the vein of the White Stripes. (Only in the their case, as a four-piece band.) Don’t get me wrong, they haven’t entirely lost their immaturity (or their interest in genre-mashing). They still play bits of indie-pop, punk, ska and whatever else they feel like. As far as youthful craziness goes, they do have a ska song in their repertoire called “Purity Rings Suck.” We’ll know they’ve reached full maturity level when they ﬁnally come out with that reggae song called “Promise Keepers Suck.” (AC)

HOPEFUL ROMANTICS Streetlight Records; Campbell Sat – 4pm; free The Hopeful Romantics have one foot in the past, singing sweet country harmonies with a bit of a twang, but they give their classic Americana a modern feel by taking inspiration also from such innovative alt-country songwriters like Gillian Welch and Neko Case. This ﬁve-piece ensemble mixes it up with guitars, a mandolin, ﬁddle and an upright bass, telling little stories in song format, like they did in the good old days. It’s authentic, yet it’s glaringly obvious

slickers, which these are some city slickers isn’t a bad thing. It gives their music a freshness, rather than sounding like an old-timey tribute band. (AC)

ONE STEP BEYOND REUNION Club Illusions, Palo Alto Sat – 8pm; $10/$15 With BFD having just brought back Jane’s Addiction for a dapper, artfully elegant headlining set in June, it’s time to take a minute and remember the club that got them to the South Bay ﬁrst, back when they were gritty, grubby upstarts singing about peeing in the shower. From 1985 to 1990, Santa Clara’s One Step Beyond was a gateway drug to alt-culture for a generation of goths, punks, metalheads and other assorted misﬁts. After the success of the One Step Beyond reunion last year, organizers are

doing it again on at Club Illusions in Palo Alto (which has its own unique history as the Keystone, the Vortex and the Edge). Headlining this year will be SF electropoppers the Frail, with performances from several DJs, including Live 105’s Aaron Axelsen. (SP)

Protagonist Abe (former Stanford student Jordan Gelber) is cocooned at his parents’ Long Island house.

His room is stuffed with collectible action ﬁgures from Toys “R” Us. Abe nurses his grievances under the care of a sweet, dippy mother (Mia Farrow, perfect in the role) whom he regularly skins at their backgammon games. The hulking overgrown kid sort of works for his father, a minor stripmall developer. The father is played by Christopher Walken, wearing an inexpensive acrylic toupee. Ashen with disappointment, Walken looks at his do-nothing son like someone peering into an open grave. At a wedding, Abe meets Miranda (Selma Blair, in one of her best roles). She is the luckless, humiliated Vi from Solondz’s Storytelling; Miranda is apparently another one of those women who changed her ﬁrst name in hope of better fortune. Or she

might have made up the new name as an alias, li to pass on to the h persistent i Abe. Abe tries to press her for a ﬁrst date. Miranda is so helpless under the weight of a terrible depression that Abe feels he can proposes marriage to her. She eventually accepts, of course. Dark Horse’s deliberately unsteady narrative starts to disintegrate. Abe’s foray into the realm of fantasy makes sense. Even before an incident knocks Abe into a dream world, solipsistic daydreams of his own coolness overwhelm him. One can’t believe Abe’s grudges against his successful brother, Richard, the doctor of the family. And it’s ridiculous to believe that Abe was thwarted by his family, even if he says things like “Do you know, if it weren’t for my dad, I could be a singer? Now I’m even too old for American Idol.” In these dreams, Marie (Donna Murphy) embodies Abe’s terriﬁed obsession with the difference between good and bad girls—she doubles as an office doormat and as secret cougar.

When we’re in the world of Abe’s fantasies, Solondz is at his sharpest; he’s cleaning up after a decade’s worth of Seth Rogan and Mark Duplass comedies, which invited us to see the arrested-development life as cute and boyish. If you want to be tough about it, this failure to grow up represents a rotten streak that runs through much of suburban American male behavior. Not that it’s better anywhere else in the world—one of the regular oppositions in Solondz’s film is between Americans bursting with privilege and foreigners who can barely contain their contempt. The people in Solondz’s films are so badly behaved that only supernatural figures (ghosts, for instance, in Life During Wartime) can adequately shame them. The victims are so ground down that one actor alone can’t take all the punishment, as in Solondz’s 2004 abortion comedy Palindromes, which was the starting point for the multich character format Todd Haynes later u used in I’m Not There. Dark Horse continues Solondz’s ci cinema of betrayal of trust. It furthers h films’ argument for a dreadful his sy symbiotic link between bulliers and th bullied. And it adds to his annals the o torture-centric families. Solondz’s of m material is the stuff of melodramatic tr tragedy, and yet his movies seem to be d developing into entertainments. Like Jo Waters’ satires, they’ve gone past John the point of being excruciating and come out funny—and, lately, strangely reasonable. Solondz doesn’t seem to be prosecuting the characters in Dark Horse, as he sometimes did in his critically vaunted and distributorblighted films Happiness and Storytelling. Abe’s combination of stiff neck and missing spine suggest a fully worked view of human failings, the kind Solondz demonstrated in his 1995 breakthrough, Welcome to the Dollhouse. And still Solondz’s Arbus eye seems to foresee the awfulness to come. The day I saw Dark Horse, the Penn State investigation was on the radio, and if anything sounded like it came straight from a Solondz script ...

Occupy Gotham IT’S BIG. And likely to the uninitiated, it’s bad. Hans Zimmer’s bellowing, foghorn notes, and the ticking time bomb finale aren’t new. But to those enthralled by Christopher Nolan’s mix of heavy machinery, heroic melodrama and political zeitgeist, The Dark Knight Rises is a mammoth superhero epic. Batman absents himself a lot, which makes sense since he tends to turn tides. He’s in retirement at first: Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne is a crippled hermit, tempted by a witty, appealing burglar named Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway). The lady never actually answers to the name “Catwoman.” She’s a temporary business associate with Tom Hardy’s Bane: a bald, sewer-dwelling muscleman, with a mouthpiece shaped like a metal tarantula. If movies have a dark power, it’s this: They tease you with what you might like to see. Then they fulfill your secret fantasy with such force as to cause as much horror as awe. Such things that an ornery person might want to see happen: the invasion of a stock trading floor by armed guerillas, or the punishment of a sold-out football stadium for the crime of dumb sports ecstasy. You wanted social change? Nolan gets it from the French Revolution, as Gotham

City falls into a new reign of terror. (A Tale of Two Cities is even quoted in the last scenes, and one villain from the earlier part of Nolan’s trilogy is this Terror’s Robespierre.) The Dark Knight caught viewers in a political fork, between the unacceptability of masked vigilantism, and the exploits of the best and bravest masked man.

The Dark Knight Rises isn’t that tricky. It has talk of the importance of symbols, of a mask anyone can wear. We see a small bat scribbled on walls, like the V sign chalked on the bricks of Nazi-occupied Europe. Better subplotting could explain the dark side of the legend. We don’t really see the unconstitutional wrongs done in the name of a Patriot Act—excuse me, “the Harvey Dent Act.” The Dark Knight Rises’ logical underpinnings aren’t as worked out as the action. Happily, the action is exhilarating: the literal rise of the title, a police battle in the snowy streets, and a night sequence of an armada of cop cars chasing one masked, caped fugitive on a motorcycle. —Richard von Busack

Does Sedonie love her peremptory majesty for the woman she is? For her power? Or is it a simple lesbian passion? As Marie Antoinette, Diane Kruger is golden, silky and petulant. If the ďŹ lm is sometimes historically dubious, Kruger embodies a worshipful servantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision of how such a queen would glow. But this ďŹ lmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marie Antoinette is an opportunist: a looter, a schemer and a bitch. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an urgent drama, framed as if for TV, with many close-ups. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s further tightened by a simmering, tense Bruno Coulais soundtrack. The camera is carried along with the ďŹ&#x201A;ow of alarmed courtiers through the dark halls and stairways of Versailles. The aristos are like cattle in a chute. Utter Failure ROB FRASER’S BEEN in a lot of bands. From Apeface to Joe Q. Citizen to Boar Hunter, it’s kind of hard to keep track of them all. “It’s hard for me to keep track, too,” he admits. But the band he’s best known for is Krupted Peasant Farmers, who in the ’90s became one of San Jose’s most beloved—and internationally famous—punk bands, with Fraser as guitarist. What KPF had that none of Fraser’s subsequent bands did was his brother Dave, Johnny V’s who was the engine behind the band’s melodic combination of old-school political hardcore with new-school pop-punk. Dave Fri, July 20 left KPF in 1993, though the band continued on for ﬁve more years. With Dave not exactly the most social type, it took Rob 9pm; $5 almost 20 years to get him writing and singing again in their new joint project, Utter Failure. “Utter Failure is what we should have been doing from the get-go,” Rob says now. The band has their ﬁrst 7” out on Rob’s Vine Hell label, showcasing a sound that is in many ways a KPF for the 21st century, stripped down to a single guitar assault and with an updated set of lyrical concerns. Rob couldn’t be happier. “I feel at home in Utter Failure,” he says. “I feel this crazy emotional passion playing Dave’s songs.”—Steve Palopoli

8eknfe IN FEBRUARY, unknown San Jose rapper Antwon released the video for his song “Helicopter,” which quickly became the subject of music blogs all over the Internet, most notably spin.com. It’s now creeping up on 80,000 views and counting. What made “Helicopter” an Internet sensation was how seamlessly the director mashed together scenes from the Steve McQueen 1960s car chase ﬂick Bullitt, with footage of Antwon and his crew walking around those same San Franciscan streets. But the real gem in the video is the song itself. It’s a unique hybrid of party-rap, stoner-rap, emo-rap and nerd-rap, without actually falling into any one of these pre-existing rap genres. “A lot of people will tell me, ‘oh you’re an Internet rapper.’ My stuff got big on the Internet because I couldn’t get it big anywhere else,” Antwon says.

In fact, the majority of music blogs that wrote about Helicopter were not raporiented. Antwon has yet to get much interest from the hip-hop community. “Rap music has its own media, like The Source or XXL, but a lot of rappers don’t fit into that mold. It’s easier for me to get into Fader and stuff like that. My audience isn’t a really strong hip-hop audience. They are people that listen to a lot of different stuff,” Antwon says. The music for “Helicopter” is actually an instrumental song called “Helicopter Does Not Exist,” which was produced by Walsh, for his own 2010 EP, Smoke Weed About It. It’s a funky, dissonant electronic track with an authentic retro vibe that could easily pass for a cool soundtrack to a ’70s action flick that never existed. Antwon contacted Walsh and asked if he could rap over it for his mixtape Fantasy Beds. Walsh told him yes. Antwon pursued a “standard” rap career back in the mid-2000s, which garnered him some attention from an indie rap label. When that fell through in 2008, he quit rapping. He returned in 2011 with Fantasy Beds and an open mind towards how he could approach rap as an expression of himself. With little promotion, Fantasy Beds made became a underground sensation. Antwon quickly reached his download limit on Soundcloud and moved it to Bandcamp, where he charges $13 per download, which people have been happily paying. Antwon has yet to play a South Bay show since his return to hip-hop last year. This Saturday’s show at Homestead Lanes will be his first. “I grew up right down the street from there. The first time I ever smoked weed was behind Homestead Lanes,” he says.—Aaron Carnes
