hy do students choose to pursue higher education in Santa Cruz County? The redwoods? The beach? The virtually unlimited supply of artisan ice cream? Not bloody likely! Here at Dilated Pupil, we understand that you’re here for the exacting academic standards, which is why we’re sure you’ll appreciate articles in this issue like “Introduction to Applied Nuclear Physics” and “Statistical Methods in Extragalactic Astronomy.” Ha ha, just kidding! We’re all a bunch of liberal arts majors; we can’t tell our asteroids from a hole in the ground! But when all that lecturing from Professor Nerdy McNerderson and Dean Vernon Wormer start to get you down, why not find refuge in our stories about the real Santa Cruz, like where to people watch, and how to find underground comedy shows? Take our self-guided courses in finding places to surf, get a tattoo and do your laundry. Now that’s applied physics. STEVE PALOPOLI | EDITOR

hen the first videotape was sold for $50,000 in 1951, it ushered in a new era of education away from the chalkboards. But it wasn’t until the rise of the Internet in the 1990s that the potential for at-home education was truly realized, and today, access to an online degree is only a click away. While online classes may have started as a matter of simple convenience for students, university faculty say new technology is now transforming and improving how students learn, as its popularity hits new highs. There have, however, been growing pains. Cabrillo College Digital Media instructor Francine Van Meter began teaching a web design class eight years ago. At first, students had trouble staying engaged with her class, Van Meter says, with many losing interest or dropping out of the 16-week course at or even before the midterm. It wasn’t until she started using “webinar” technology and creating videos and interactive programs that her retention rate drastically improved. Van Meter argues that online classes, though not the best fit for every student, open doors for those who otherwise can’t afford or don’t have time for a classroom education. “The main reason people take online classes is because they are either working or have family responsibilities,” Van Meter says. “The options allow you to complete them on a flexible time schedule. You still have the same rigor, but more flexibility.” This summer, Cabrillo had a 6 percent increase in online enrollment. The school is looking to offer more than 80 classes online in the fall semester, from Theater Arts to Kinesiology. The school is also one of 24 pilot colleges in California experimenting with the Online Education Initiative, which will offer 24/7 online tutoring services for students, as well as assistance and training for advisors and faculty to help with this online shift. Despite the increasing interest and demand for online courses, public colleges are only allocated a certain amount of funding for them from the state. As they try to get more classes online and provide support for traditional classes, many schools are finding their resources and funding for
online classes stretched thin. “We are not receiving additional funding specifically for increasing online classes—however, the college recognizes there is a demand for more online courses,” Van Meter says. “To increase the number of online classes will most likely mean reducing the number of on-campus offerings that demonstrate enrollment decline.” The switch to online classes also takes a toll on instructors, who have to keep up with the latest technology and adapt their teaching style to it. Although compensation remains the same for instructors, Van Meter says it requires at least 100 hours and continual adjustments for a brand new online course. “You aren’t paying for a physical location, but you have technology costs,” Van Meter says. “Providing a secure and robust class online comes with a price tag.” Despite the growing popularity of online classes, the traditional classroom setting, known as a “brick-and-mortar” class, isn’t necessarily a relic of the past. In a recent broadcast on Fresh Air, interviewer Terry Gross discussed online education with Kevin Carey, a writer and director of the Education Policy Program at New America, a research organization based in Washington, D.C. Despite his argument in favor of online classes, Gross stressed the importance of a college experience beyond books and tests. “The college campus environment was such a fabulous place … it was such a rich cultural and political environment. Don’t you eliminate that [with online classes], and isn’t that what people go to college for?” While it’s true that taking a final exam while sitting in pajamas sipping coffee isn’t exactly the “traditional” college experience, Carey also points out that the act of “going away to college” is a privilege only a fraction of the American population can afford. “Colleges are expensive because they can be, because they want to be, and because they were built to be that way,”
Carey says. “Colleges are expensive because they occupy a very privileged position in American society.” Today, society and employment demand some kind of college credential that much of the population doesn’t have, leaving a huge gap between the college degree haves and have-nots. Many colleges are looking to online courses as a way to fill it. “The proliferation of online education courses has grown dramatically,” UCSC extension school director Lynda Rogers says. “Without a doubt, every university and college is involved with online education at some level. Even K-12 education is now using online education resources.” UCSC has been offering a solid slate of online courses for more than a decade now, Rogers says, after experimenting with them since the ’90s. The UCSC extension school is currently offering online classes to about 7,500 students, and functions similarly to a community college in that students don’t have to be admitted to the university to take classes. “With online classes, students are able to go at their own pace … students will go over and over a concept until they master it,” Rogers says. “That is difficult to do when you are in a classroom and an instructor is setting a pace for the median performance ability of that class.” UCSC has a broad spectrum of online options, Rogers says. While some classes are solely online, others offer combined in-class and online portions. Students are often recommended to have supplemental materials not available online, like textbooks and readings, or to attend weekly or bi-weekly check-ins with an instructor. “Brick-and-mortar classes and online classes are a little bit like apples and oranges,” adds Rogers, “but I wouldn’t discount either learning environment. Both have value for students, and for today’s student you need to expose yourself to a variety of different learning environments so that you are fully educated.”
This summer, Cabrillo had a 6 percent increase in online enrollment.

LAUGH RIOT How to find the underground comedy scene in Santa Cruz BY DNA
A
pproximately 10,000 years ago, on a Thursday, a pre-historic man named Grrock slipped on a banana peel. His crusty friends laughed uproariously before falling out of their cave and evolving. Thus, underground comedy in Santa Cruz was born. Today, one-off local comedy shows happen in pop-up restaurants while cult favorites like Mike Birbiglia headline the Rio Theatre. There is a burgeoning comedy scene with something to offer almost every night of the week in Santa Cruz, and you are invited.
A LITTLE HISTORY If San Francisco is the hub of the comedy world in our region, Santa Cruz is a primary spoke. Back in the early ’80s, Jon Fox (who started the Punch Line in SF) opened a weekly
comedy room at the Albatross, then moved it to its current space at the Crow’s Nest. Now it’s one of the longest-running on the West Coast. Every Sunday night at 9 p.m., comics from all over the country drop sets there to entertain locals and tourists.
FUNNY SLUGS UCSC has produced its fair share of outstanding comedians. SNL alum Andy Samberg and Maya Rudolph were both slugs. Graduate Brendan Lynch, whose father designed the school mascot, now writes for the HBO show Every Other Wednesday and rants on Bill Simmons’ million-listener podcasts. Graduate Emily Heller, who appeared in the SNL digital short Lazy Sunday, recently released her first album, Good for Her, on the Kill Rock Stars label.
The Santa Cruz Comedy Coalition encourages UCSC up-and-comers to reach out to the local comedy rooms and develop their stagecraft. Without leaving town, aspiring UCSC comedians and fans can meet comics from every level, soak up stories and learn the ropes. It’s an underground comedy smorgasbord in Santa Cruz with something for everyone.
MEET THE SCENESTERS Weekly comedy rooms each have their own flavor, hosts and style. One of the best is the Monday comedy show at the Poet & Patriot Irish Pub. Set in a supremely comfortable Irish bar, affable host Sam Weber is the face of the next generation of Santa Cruz comedians. Weber knows how to keep a show rolling and this is a great first stop for 12 > 2016 | GOODTIMES.SC | SANTACRUZ.COM | DILATED PUPIL

bartender loves good comedy, so do your best, and expect honest feedback. Every scene has its characters and Santa Cruz has Hamburger Wif Cheese, although everyone just calls him Burger. A third-generation Santa Cruzan, Burger runs multiple rooms. On Sundays, he and Travis “L.A. Roast Battle Winner” Denley run the Crazy Horse. Some comics hop over from the Crow’s Nest to mic it up at this very loose room in Seabright. Then on Tuesday, Burger hosts another event at the Pocket. One of the best-decorated bars in Santa Cruz, it’s a gem of a dive. On Fridays, Burger is at it again at the Tannery’s Artbar and Cafe. On Thursday there is the Blue Lagoon, run by the old man of the scene, DNA (disclaimer, that’s me). Starting at 8:30 p.m. and backed by a band, the show is a tight 90 minutes, with 15 comedians and a headliner. Some comics that grew up at the Blue now appear on Comedy Central, while newer comics learn how to drop a tight three-to-five. Monthly shows at other spots like New Bohemia Brewing Co. on 41st Avenue and Lille Aeske in Boulder Creek keep all the neighborhoods laughing, with new venues popping up every month. One event that has opportunities for everyone to
12
attend for free is the third annual Santa Cruz Comedy Festival that takes place on Oct. 15, at which 75 comedians run around 12 venues dropping multiple sets. Check out Metavinyl at 8 p.m. on Oct. 15 for a free all-ages comedy show with some of the biggest names in the Bay Area. The festival features shows at Streetlight Records, 99 Bottles, Pure Pleasure and many other venues. This year there is a mini-golf comedy tournament and midnight movie riffing at the Del Mar. Keep an eye on the all-purpose comedy website standupsantacruz.com for details and links. Want to know about comedy shows before anyone else? Follow the producers who bring solid big-name acts. Pulse Productions brings people like Paula Poundstone, Janeane Garofalo and Margaret Cho to the Rio Theatre. Good Neighbor Productions brought Doug Stanhope to Don Quixote’s, and will have Stanhope’s buddy Geoff Tate at the Blue Lagoon on Sept. 29. Comedy Night at the Crepe Place is George Kane’s baby and he has brought Kyle Kinane and Dan St. Germain, as well as Natasha Leggero to the Vets Hall. So find your favorite spots and cheer for local breakout comics like Emily Catalano and Trevor Rogers. Or better yet, be like Grrock and make us laugh.

Our list of Santa Cruz’s best restaurants for people watching
S
anta Cruz is a small town. And often times small towns—even those as lively and quirky as ours—can feel a little sleepy. Luckily, there are plenty of places around here to sit and snack while monitoring curious people trying to mind their own business. Here are some of our top picks for people watching.
Midtown
METRO’s Pacific Station and rounding the corner past Betty’s. And yes, behold the classily dressed Santa Cruz Warrior execs who work across the street. And of course, behold the drunk people arguing with the cops at three in the afternoon. So, I guess this is how downtown Santa Cruz got its motto: “It’s all right here!” Anyway, while you’re here, order the kimchi fried rice. 920 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz.
CHARLIE HONG KONG
CAFFE PERGOLESI
Charlie Hong Kong has lengthy windows—the hallmark of any truly great people-watching eatery—behind which snacking voyeurs may sit and watch people stroll and drive past. The great thing about windows like these is that people outside will seldom look through them and notice you gawking at them. Just last week, as a matter of fact, I was sitting in my car at the intersection of Seabright and Soquel avenues, talking to myself for a couple of minutes like a crazy person—just like I always do—when, as I turned my head to the left, I felt a text buzz on my cell phone. And behind the windows of Charlie Hong Kong I spotted my friend waving at me, closing his phone and smiling. Damn you, Tice! 1141 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz.
Pergs is a hub for what I’d call “interactive people watching.” You know, why simply watch the crusties, the literature nerds, the organic coffee lovers, the high schoolers, the dropouts and the incredibly hungover from afar … when you can instead join the eclectic mix on the patio? Make friends, be part of the fun. 418 Cedar St., Santa Cruz.
Downtown BETTY’S NOODLE HOUSE Oh … behold the melting pot that makes up the county’s bus ridership meandering from
14
JALAPEÑOS TAQUERIA Like Charlie’s, Jalapeños is home to long shadow-y windows that provide optimal viewing of the lower Pacific Avenue intersection, bustling with cars and foot traffic. The other day, actually, I saw my friend make a left-hand turn there while I sat snarfing down my veggiefilled downtown burrito. “Nice use of the turn lane, Emily, but don’t forget your hand signals next time!” 206 Laurel St., Santa Cruz.
OUTSIDE NEW LEAF There’s a long list of good places to eat on
BY JACOB PIERCE
Pacific Avenue, where a steady stream of buskers, tourists and students amble past. But New Leaf’s free patio area is clearly the most affordable. Grab a tasty Gloria’s Pantry snack for under $5 in the store’s deli section and take it outside. Or simply bring your own lunch! 1134 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz.
Beach PICNIC BASKET There are a dozen joints lining Beach Street, the avenue that faces the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, making them prime tourist-spying territory. Who, out of your friends, can count the most fanny packs? Challenge them to a game of Find the European! Many of the restaurants along this corridor are forgettable, but two that stand out here are Sawasdee, a Thai place with stunning second-story views of the Monterey Bay, and the Picnic Basket, a more affordable super fresh spot, where folksin-the-know can watch sandy, sun-burned out-of-towners stumble by. On weekends, the Picnic Basket is also within earshot of karaoke at Ideal Bar and Grill across the street—just close enough to hear seasoned crooners serenading cocktail-guzzling beach bums, and distant enough to shut out the more painful warblers as they yodel “Margaritavlle” and Michael Jackson. Just the sounds of another sunny Santa Cruz Saturday. 25 Beach St., Santa Cruz.

ating fried chicken can be a blissful experience. Those moments when you raise the first piece, examining it from all sides to find the perfect spot to begin, followed by the crackle of salty coating as your teeth break into the juicy meat are one of life’s great simple pleasures. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a thigh, breast or drumstick. In these moments, we are all equal. Now imagine if that chicken could be brought to your door—with waffles. You didn’t even have to put on pants! This surreal from-the-couch fantasy becomes reality with Kickin Chicken, your friendly local late-night fried chicken kitchen. Buddies Daniel Mendoza and Justin Williams have been delivering deep-fried happiness to the Santa Cruz area since 2014, and, OK, they probably would prefer you to be wearing pants when you answer the door. Kickin Chicken’s menu focuses on fast delivery of exquisitely fried fowl, which they brine sous vide before flash frying. The results are a crispy exterior and super juicy, evenly-cooked flesh.
They also mix it up with sides like macaroni and cheese (occasionally topped with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos), kimchi fried rice and Brussels sprouts with bacon. In addition to their combos, everything can be ordered à la carte. This fall, they plan on bringing back their infamous Hot Chicken, a spicy revelation burning with the heat of their house-fermented cayenne lava—I mean, sauce. Here are the rules: order online at orderstart. com/kickinchicken Tuesday through Friday before 6 p.m. and choose your delivery time, otherwise it will arrive within an hour. They deliver to UCSC and in Santa Cruz, as far as the Live Oak area. If you’re farther south, just be sure to pre-order and they’ll find a way to get you your chicken fixin. Kickin Chicken doesn’t have a permanent storefront, but you can catch them for lunch every Thursday, from 11:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m., at the Pop Up space on Pacific Avenue next to Assembly, and occasionally at New Bohemia Brewing Co. on 41st Avenue. Follow them on Instagram @ kickinchickensc to stay up-to-date on special events and new menu creations. But what would dinner be without dessert? All Nighter Cookies, another local late-night fairy godmother, will bring you fresh-baked cookies and ice cold milk from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Order through their website allnightercookies.com.

CAPITOLA JETTY
When the swell is up, a nice left careens in front of the jetty and the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t snag in the kelp-infested water. Also, about a block and a reef away is the infamous Toe’s Over, which needs a huge winter swell and a minus low tide to break. But when it does, it’s pure left- and right-breaking bliss.
COWELL
The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes.
summer winds as most spots on the North Coast. Reaches its full potential during west, northwest 10-foot-and-above swells.
THE HOOK
Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break also has a lot of surfers that are “hooked” on the spot. Nevertheless, it’s got a right-facing wave that, if you can maneuver around the flock, is to die for.
MANRESA/LA SELVA
Here, locals tend to stare hard and long at newcomers. Because of its bluff-protected location, Four Mile isn’t affected (as much) by the afternoon
Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars. But a lot of the time the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over the place. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside and nil to no summertime surf—unless there’s a south swell.

NATURAL BRIDGES
When the conditions are just right, like an 8-foot west swell, this spot has the best tube rides available. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.
PLEASURE POINT
This place is generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra thinglassed rippers. Practice, as always, common courtesy and you should be all right in the outer, best breaks.
PRIVATE
Longboard paradise. Clean right-facing lines peel off and make for a great ride that will take you all the way into the break known as Trees and into the Capitola Wharf. Well, not quite, but the ride is long and the
waves are gentle. Easygoing, without all the soft-board hassles of Cowell to spoil your wave.
SCOTT CREEK
A potent combination of a beach and reef break, Scott dishes out about every challenge a surfer can handle. From long paddles and strong currents and rips to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott isn’t for the faint of heart—or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water. Breaks best with a powerful north swell.
world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot— The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot and Indicators—the Lane has it all, including ogling tourists. There’s even a surfing museum in the nearby lighthouse.
THREE MILE
Primo reef break that is usually uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Named after the number of miles after Swift Street, it cops a great right line, particularly during a winter northwest swell.

Pogonip This short hike is easy to get to and winds up to the old Casa del Rey Golf & Country Clubhouse— featured in The Lost Boys movie—which sits on an abandoned golf course that overlooks Santa Cruz. Check out the tennis courts that have been reclaimed by nature over the years.
Observation Deck Loop Hike, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park
Wilder Ridge Loop Trail, Wilder Ranch State Park
This loop hike, starting from Redwood Grove, takes you to the trails along the San Lorenzo River and Eagle Creek. Then you can hike up to the observation deck near the campground on the other side of the park and back. Most of the trail is shaded, making it ideal for relaxing under the giant redwoods.
Expansive ocean views and rolling hills characterize this 7.7mile partial loop trail. It’s moderately easy to walk, with more shade than sun. Cyclists also love this one, so keep an eye out.
Skyline to the Sea Trail, Castle Rock State Park This three-day hike showcases the best of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Not for the faint of heart, the 30-plus-mile hike begins in Castle Rock State Park and winds through Big Basin State Park—where you’ll pass the impressive Berry Creek Falls—and ends at Waddell Beach.

PHONE OM A case for good old digital detox MARIA GRUSAUSKAS
I
’m going to date myself here, but in college I had a flip phone. These were pre-Instagram, and pre-emailon-phone days, even. But I had texting. And it had me.
One night, while trotting to the crowded Bay Tree Bookstore bus stop, texting, my forward inertia was halted by something as tall as a 3-year-old child, but not at all soft and forgiving like a living thing. One second I was typing “OMG. That is hilar - - ” and the next I’m on the cold, hard asphalt, my flip phone and one slipper—it was finals week, so I hadn’t really gotten dressed that day— tumbling to a stop in the bus lane. I’m not sure what hurt more: the bruise on my knee the size of a grapefruit or the humiliation when I recognized my toppler: a bright yellow fire hydrant.
50
You’d think this lesson in cell-phone-distracted idiocy would be enough to curb my perpetual text-thumb. It wasn’t. Several years later, the problem is so ubiquitous that the last time I visited campus I thought there was some kind of Pokémon Go championship happening—though this was before the Go phenomenon even began: At a stop sign, I counted nine out of 10 students leaving a lecture hall doing the zombie-like walk we do while gazing down into our phone screens. People have fallen off cliffs while taking selfies, and cellphone use is responsible for an estimated 1.6 million auto-vehicle crashes a year in the U.S., according to the National Safety Council. Add in “text neck,” trouble sleeping, tendencies toward narcissism, lowered empathy, and a deterioration of face-to-face social interactions—and it’s kind of a mystery why the majority of us are still addicted to our phones. Oh, that’s right, because we’re addicted. So I’m just going to put this out there as
a friendly reminder to myself, and to you, dear student brain: When is the last time you turned your phone off? Like, for a few hours? Or, piled your powered-down phones in the center of the table at dinner with friends? Notice anything better about the conversation? Deeper, perhaps? A study involving 35 phone-less subjects, a few undercover neuroscientists and the Moroccan desert found that, without Google, conversations tend toward deeper, more soulful topics. Other benefits of a digital detox (besides decreasing chance of injury and car accidents) include improved memory, better posture, deeper friendships, more efficient sleep and greater focus. These all seem like things students can benefit from. My advice: try visiting a digital-free zone like Santa Cruz’s Hidden Peak Teahouse to get the ball rolling. Then, graduate to self-disciplined power-downs as you hike, meditate, surf, beach it, or enjoy a phone-free meal with friends. Also, watch out for fire hydrants.
