This Thanksgiving morning, November 23, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation will host the 13th Annual Applied Materials "Silicon Valley Turkey Trot." From humble beginnings in 2005 with 1,900 paid participants and $132,000 donated to local charities, the goal this year is to donate at least $900,000 to five nonprofits helping local families in need. You can view a new video that shows why your support is so important here, http://bit. ly/2yEM6JT or search Silicon Valley Turkey Trot to sign up. In just 13 years, the Turkey Trot will have contributed more than $8 million to nonprofit partners, plus an additional 200,000 pounds of canned goods to Second Harvest.

Part of this is bringing that one world family feeling to everybody. We are bringing people together despite the differences that divide them. We want to celebrate our differences and we feel that is the true essence of yoga.” Hosted by the Art of Living, a worldwide non-profit organization that works to promote peace

According to city officials, last winter’s rains struck Gilroy’s tallest building–the 162-unit Alexander Station Apartments–before the ceilings were finished and caused the floors to swell. Luckily, according to building reports, the concrete foundation is solid with no evidence of settling.
Gilroy Chief Building Inspector Rob Allen said the floor material used at Alexander Station absorbed excessive amounts of moisture during last year's severe storms and that the problem is relatively common in building projects of its size. The plywood floorboards that sit on the floor joists absorbed the moisture before the completion of the roof, causing them to swell. “As the construction moved forward, floor levels were added and ➝ Alexander Station, 12

INTERSECTION AT LEAVESLEY AND MURRAY SEES THE MOST COLLISIONS
SOLID FOUNDATION Despite the problem with sagging floors, city officials say the foundation at Alexander Station Apartments is sound.
The most dangerous intersection in town is the on Murray Avenue and Leavesley Road with 35 collisions, including three DUIs and one involving a pedestrian, according to a report released during a special city council study session. Out of the top 10 dangerous intersections in Gilroy, six are found along State Route 152 from data collected between 2102 and 2016 by the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The report, compiled by the Hexagon Transportation Consultants, found that during that time frame 175 collisions occurred at intersections along Highway 152. Among the most dangerous intersections include Welburn Avenue and Monterey Road, Camino Arroyo and Pacheco Pass Highway, Miller Avenue and First Street and Church Street and First Street. The heaviest concentration of accidents occurred from between the intersections of Welburn Avenue and Monterey and the Highway 101 off ramp at San Ysidro Avenue a half mile stretch of road that has seen 99 accidents from 2012 and 2016, according to Jeff Elia, Vice President of Hexagon Transportation. The study reported that no fatalities occurred at any of the listed intersections but three severe injuries occurred at the intersection of Chestnut and Tenth streets and two severe injuries at Camino Arroyo and Pacheco Pass Highway. The intersection with the highest rate of collisions, based on crashes per million vehicles entering the intersection, are the intersections of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Longmeadow Drive and Miller Avenue and First Street where each sees .65 collisions for every million ➝ Intersections, 2

City aims to improve intersections ➝ Intersections, 1
The report, which is available in the City of Gilroy's website, lists in detail recommendations on how to reduce crashes in the listed intersections. At the intersection of Chestnut Street and Tenth Street, which had three severe accidents, 35 percent of collisions were either head-on or broadside and one collision was with a pedestrian. Six of the eight head-on or broadside crashes involved northbound vehicles, including three collisions with cross street traffic. The pedestrian collision appears to be caused by a pedestrian that failed to follow pedestrian traffic signals at the intersection, according to the report. Factors contributing to accidents at Chestnut Street and Tenth Street include problems with signaling, worn pavement striping and marking and high rates of traffic from Highway 101 in part due to access to car dealerships and industrial vehicle traffic. Hexagon Transportation Consultants, a San Jose based traffic and engineering consultant firm, conducted the study in the spring and early summer,

cars entering the intersection. Murray Avenue and Leavesley Road, which topped the report for total crashes, witnessed .55 collisions per every million cars entering the intersection. The safest intersection studied was Santa Teresa Boulevard and Day Road East which only sees .06 crashes per every million cars entering the intersection. At Leavesley Road and Murray Avenue, 51 percent of accidents were rear-ended collisions, while 20 percent consisted of head-on and broadside collisions resulting in 16 injury accidents. Reasons listed for the high rate of accidents are the location of gas stations, high peak morning and afternoon traffic, impeded traffic from the Highway 101 ramp and the lack of lane line extension marking. Among the potential measures to reduce collisions at the intersection include better lane marking, more police presence, reduced speed, moving the speed limit sign closer to Forest Street and to lengthen and to make other changes that will keep traffic flowing during peak traffic hours.

Customers love All Natural fruits ALL NATURAL FRUITS SELL WELL AT THE OUTLETS By Brad Kava Editor
Brad Kava
Nine years ago, people told Juan Carlos Guizar he was crazy to open a pushcart fruit stand at the Gilroy Outlets. The requirements there were too expensive and there were no other businesses like it in Gilroy. But two years later, Guizar opened a second All Natural fruit stand there and this month he’s opening an All Natural fruit store at 1120 First St. He’s moved his family from San Jose to Gilroy and is prospering on fruit. “My business is here and it’s smaller than San Jose and feels better,” he said. “I like Gilroy. What I have, I got here. It’s like a lucky charm to me.” Guizar, 44, based his business from what he knew growing up in Mexico, where pushcart fruit stands are common. People like the freshest fruit possible, he realized. He served it in very big portions for $5 or $8 and includes a range of fresh and organic produce, when possible. He makes parfaits with yogurt or homemade chili sauce or just plain fruit, including pineapple, jicama, strawberries, papaya, mango, cantaloupe, and watermelon. You can select some or all of them. He built a loyal following
PICK YOUR OWN Juan Carlos Guizar’s fruit stands didn’t catch on in San Jose or Tracy, but have taken off in Gilroy, He supports his wife and two children with two custom carts at the Outlets and is opening a storefront on First Street this month. from shoppers and people who drive out of their way for healthy munchies. What he found right away was that people from all over the world were attracted to his stand, especially people from India and Asia, not to mention those from Mexico who longed for their traditional delicacies. “There’s a real demand for real fruit with no
artificial colors or flavors,” he said. “It’s artisanal.” It wasn’t cheap to begin at the Outlets. He designed his own pushcart for $22,000 meeting strict requirements for hot water and refrigeration. “This is not your ordinary pushcart,” he said. “It meets health department standards.” Guizar was born to be an entrepreneur. His father
is American but raised the family in Michoacan, eventually moving to San Jose. Guizar, the oldest son, worked in his father’s Imperio Taqueria at King and San Antonio in San Jose from the time he was 16. He studied business administration at Heald College and tried several businesses to administrate before landing on the Gilroy fruit stands.
He imported limes from a farm in Mexico and sold them in San Francisco, but it grew too expensive to maintain a warehouse and delivery trucks. He tried fruit stands at Eastridge Mall and in Tracy, but they didn’t bring in enough traffic. Then, he came across the Outlets, which proved to be his best success.
Friends were shocked when he started a second stand on the other side of Leavesley from his first. They thought he would be competing with himself. Like the ubiquitous Starbucks shops, his two fruit stands didn’t cancel each other out, but drew even more customers, including Mixed Martial Arts champion Cain Velasquez, who was a regular.

OPINION LETTERS Gilroy looking dirtier than ever As a long time resident and former dentist who worked in Gilroy, I've noticed a deterioration in the cleanliness of our streets primarily due to the trash people thoughtlessly throw about. Thought an article to the Dispatch could get some attention to this problem also an attempt to get our city government to get involved. Sincerely, Michael E McKeever, DDS Gilroy
FROM THE WEB Neighbors may use radar guns to patrol Just what we need: The neighborhood grouch pointing a radar gun at neighbors as they come and go. Yeah, that'll keep peace in the valley. Steve Andrade Via Gilroy Dispatch Facebook page
Time to put up, shut up and take control of Gilroy government
T
he biggest complaint we hear is that the local government isn’t representing its constituents, and while we agree it’s easy to feel unheard, we suggest it’s also easy to take control of the issues that matter to you in the city. When we go to a city council meeting, attendance is often sparse, except for a few regulars who show up and talk about every issue, or the people in whose backyards certain issues reside. Then the place is full, as it was over local traffic calming questions or the proposal to build a Great Wolf hotel complex. There’s a way to be heard regularly and get your opinions on the record–join one of the city’s commissions. The process is simple. Fill out an application and then submit to a public interview by the council. At this point, there are so many openings, it’s easy to get appointed. Here are some of the openings. The seven-member Parks and Recreation Commission has two seats opening up for the new year. The commission oversees public parks, urban forestry and recreation planning and programming. It meets the third Thursday of every month at 6pm. The position lasts four years. The Personnel Commission has two four-year openings in its five-person body. This commission advises and reviews job descriptions and classified recommendations for jobs. It also serves as a neutral body to hear appeals on disciplinary matters. It meets the second Monday of every month at 5:30pm. The Physically Challenged Board of Appeals discusses enforcement of public accommodations of matters for people with physical challenged and helps set city policy. Meetings of this five-member board are 10am on the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October. There are two openings on the sevenmember Planning Commission, which
advises the city council about land use, zoning, use permits and variances. The position lasts four years and is hugely important to planning Gilroy’s future. Meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. The Public Art Committee has four of its seven seats open. It advises the Arts and Culture Commission in the development of public art. It meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm. Applications are available at www. cityofgilroy.org. Applicants will be interviewed Dec. 11. The fact that it’s so difficult to find people to serve on boards says a lot about who is governing the city. We know it’s extremely difficult for younger family people to serve and that’s one of the biggest problems we have. Considering half of the local population commutes to work in Silicon Valley and gets home, hopefully, in time for dinner with the kids, there isn’t much time for public service. So end up with a lot of retired people on boards who don’t see the same issues in their lives that those with young families, or those who are single and young, will see. So what’s the motivation to take the time out of a busy life to work for the public? One thing is that you will have influence over what’s to come. So many people complain in tweets or Facebook posts are the Alexander Street housing complex and some say they were never alerted to it. They were, but they missed it in all the other information traffic of their lives. That said, being on the planning commission would give one of seven votes about whether a project like that has a place in Gilroy. You don’t have to pay anything or protest. You just volunteer and have your say. Another thing for those young and ambitious, a commission is the first step toward elected office. If you dream about any political office, this is the best way to start. You get experience and something for your resume, which could lead you to higher office.

He loved working in his garden, building things in the garage, fixing the house up and going to the movies. He was an honest man, who treated others equally and always wanted to do what was right. He leaves behind, his wife of 44 years, Frances Van Pelt of Paso Robles, children, Jon and Robert Van Pelt of Paso Robles and Jennifer Ellis of San Rafael. Daughter in-law, Kelly Van Pelt and Son in-law, Braeden Ellis. Grandchildren: Maddie, Chloe, Abigail, Logan, Bryson, Jordyn Van Pelt and Hudson Ellis. There was more than met the eye last Monday at the Gilroy City Council meeting when the council voted 5-2 to reject city staff 's recommendation to approve an extension of the city's Residential Development Ordinance with Councilmembers Peter Leroe-Muñoz and Fred Tovar being the two dissenting votes. Councilmember Tovar's vote to extend the ordinance came into conflict with his position of voting in favor of Measure H in last year's election. Tovar was the lone supporter of Measure H among members of the city council and his vote to extend the Residential Development Ordinance, which essentially would allow for further growth until
the adoption of the next General Plan, seems to contradict his support for Measure H. Measure H, a measure that halted the further development outside the city's boundaries was approved by more than 66 percent of Gilroy voters. Councilmembers Dan Harney, while aware and concerned about the shortage of housing in Santa Clara County, voted to decline the extension based on the will of the voters. “My decision to go against staff recommendation was the understanding of what Measure H was meant to stand for and what the voters wanted," Councilmember Harney said. While the will of Gilroy voters was to halt the further growth of Gilroy, California still grapples with a shortage of affordable housing. According to a recent story ran in the San Jose Mercury News, Santa Clara County's average amount of housing being built at 5,270 is
far below the 21,978 new homes needed. The lack of available housing has led to skyrocketing rents, further exacerbating the housing crisis. While the rejection of the Residential Development Ordinance puts the brakes on new development, projects that have already been approved such as Glen Loma and Hecker Pass will continue. “People are upset about the rapid pace of growth and I hope I have taken a small step to slow down the growth in Gilroy,” said Mayor Roland Velasco after last week's city council meeting. “Residents are upset about the traffic and the impact on our schools. It's a quality of life issue. Once the general plan is completed, we can have a conversation on the overall growth rate in Gilroy.” Councilmember Tovar was called and emailed to comment on this report however we have yet to get a response.

YogaFest will call Gilroy OM next year ➝ Yogafest, 1
Balaji Vaidyanathan
WORLDWIDE APPEAL
Organized by The Art of Living, YogaFest delivered a variety of multicultural fun. present the keynote speech to kick the event off Sunday morning. YogaFest is donating the proceeds of the event to help rebuild Sonoma County following the fires which devastated the area. A large poster board, bearing love and well wishes written by festival attendees to residents of Sonoma County will be hand delivered by Sridhar to Santa Rosa Mayor Chris Coursey. YogaFest organizers are eager to hear from Gilroyans and hope to get feedback at info@ theyogafest.org.
Balaji Vaidyanathan
amphitheater served as the main stage for not only a variety of yoga classes, such as the Art of Living Yoga with Kasia Fraser and Laughter Yoga with Manoj Joshi, but also African drums, a Venezuelan dance performance, meditative music and dance. "It's nice for the whole family," said Erin Steed, a Gilroyan who was there with her husband, Bob, and their two boys, Emory and Cedar. "There's an array of a lot of different things, multiculturalism and dancing." More than a dozen local vendors displayed handcrafted wares, exotic herbal teas and two workshop areas with classes on how to manage stress with Ashwani Dhall and a meditation workshop with Paula WhangRamos among more than a dozen other courses. YogaFest also hosted a kid's area, which taught yoga lessons for children up to 12. Starting at 9am and running until 5pm, attendees were treated to a day full of interactive fun and learning. YogaFest is not for the passive spectator. "You're always doing something instead of just watching," said Bob Steed. Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco
WELLNESS WORKOUT From 9am to 5pm YogaFest participants meditated with several high profile Bay Area yoga instructors.

then finally the roof was completed, protecting the flooring from further moisture intrusion,” Allen said in an email. “At that point, the flooring started to dry out and return to its normal thickness, but since it was now reacting to loads from the building above, it began to compress, causing the slight settling issues.” Pacific West Builders, the company that owns Alexander Station Apartments, is working
to remove the compressed flooring and will replace it with solid wood blocking. Pacific West Builders anticipates that the repairs will fix the settling, which has caused the center of units to sink 1/2 to 5/8 inch. “Water was absorbed by all that plywood material and some of the glue that was used, which is designed to withstand some weather, but we had so much rain for so long which caused the plywood to absorb more
moisture than they thought,” Allen said. The Alexander Station Apartments, which has been the subject of widespread speculation throughout Gilroy, represents the largest single residential building projects in the city’s history. To ensure that the project passes all necessary inspections, the city has assigned a fulltime inspector to the site. “The construction permit fees pay for the inspector to be there,”
Allen said. “We just want the building done and to have it done properly. We need it to be built correctly for our citizens because this is our legacy. It might be their building, but it’s going to be a reflection of our community. We want it to be done well.” Another item that failed inspection were 25 anchor bolts, which are fasteners used to attach structures to the concrete. The anchor bolts failed
inspection in December 2016. According to Allen, the anchor bolt failure is not a major concern and can be fixed. “Anchor bolts can fail inspection if they are placed in the wrong location, are the wrong size or if they’re not installed properly,” Allen said. “It doesn’t mean that an engineer can’t go back and fix it. They would drill a hole in the concrete and install new anchor bolts. It happens in construction pretty often.”

MH Gym owner sent to prison FORMER GYM OWNER IS TRANSFERRED TO SAN QUENTIN STATE PRISON Michael Moore Editor
David Wolfsmith, the former Morgan Hill gym owner who was convicted of sexually assaulting 13 female clients, was sent to San Quentin State Prison following his Nov. 6 restitution hearing at South County Courthouse, according to authorities. From there, Wolfsmith will serve the remainder of his sevenyear term on 14 counts—mostly felonies—related to the 13 victims, one of whom was age 13 when he assaulted her, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Tim McInerny said. Wolfsmith will likely be “farmed out” from San Quentin to another facility in the California prison system. “That was a great relief to a number of victims, that he

To the 12 adult victims, the Wolfsmith was arrested by judge ordered Wolfsmith to Morgan Hill police in April reimburse a collective total of 2016, after five of his victims about $50,000 in gym fees,
McInerny said. The amount for each victim was determined by the period of time they were assaulted by Wolfsmith and at the same time paying gym fees to Wolfpak. The judge also ordered other “economic losses” to victims. These include the women’s expenses for mental health counseling or ongoing therapy— a common need among victims who have faced sexual assault, McInerny said. McInerny added the restitution order is enforceable by law, and Wolfsmith cannot avoid making these payments by bankruptcy or any other effort. At the Aug. 25 sentencing hearing, several of Wolfsmith’s adult victims told Judge Jacqueline Duong that he manipulated, shamed and groomed his victims in order to gain control over them, before physically abusing them. The women described a “cultlike” atmosphere when they exercised at Wolfpak. After establishing a pattern of fear and intimidation, Wolfsmith physically assaulted the victims
while insisting the contact was intended to measure their fitness progress or help them recover from injuries or exercise, according to the victims’ accounts. One of the women described in detail how he told her to remove her top when they were alone at the gym, so he could measure her body for exercise results. He walked behind her and “pulled (her) shorts completely down” and “unhooked (her) bra,” the woman said. Another victim said, after training at Wolfpak for two years, Wolfsmith invited her into the “massage room” for therapy. She immediately felt uneasy as she lied down on the massage table and “his breathing changed” as he began to touch her inappropriately. He then covered her face with a towel and pulled her shorts down. The woman “froze” in panic, she said. Another hearing is scheduled for Dec. 18 to settle up the remainder of the restitution, McInerny said. Wolfsmith has waived his right to appear at future hearings related to the criminal case.

Be careful with your banking cards.” “I just tried calling the office and the phone was busy,” said Jay Torres on Facebook. “My card was hacked at the Gilroy social security office! Happened this past Saturday and then again Sunday. I looked back on the transaction address on first street.”

“So I know they found a skimmer at Valero gas station but what about the people who never went to Valero?” said Andora Gardner Salcido on the Gilroy Neighborhood Watch Facebook page. “Are they doing an investigation on that?” The Gilroy Police Department is urging consumers who bought gas at the Valero station to check bank statements for unauthorized charges. The stories behind Gilroy’s wild street names NO NAME WHAT? By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
waited and waited, and after two years I put in a notice with the county engineer for it as No Name Uno," Blundo said. "It could have been named anything. We could have called it Joe or Pete." Despite the consternation of Saint Louise Medical center and the confusion of local motorist, the name endures. Another street oddity is I.O.O.F Street. The name is derived from the fraternal organization The International Order of Odd Fellows, who operated an orphanage where the offices for Rebekah Children's Services currently resides on the street. The land on which the building sits was donated by wealthy South Valley philanthropist Catherine Hoxett, who also donated money to install the clock in Old City Hall.
Brad Kava
Have you ever driven on No Name Uno Road and wondered, what is the deal with that name? So have we. To slake our curiously over the curious names of some of Gilroy's streets, we did some sleuthing to figure out how and why some of these streets in Gilroy got their names. Back in 2007, Joe Blundo, a retired Santa Clara County road worker, sat down with the Dispatch to set the record straight on how the street got its name. “This happened when the freeway went in,” said Blundo, who helped build U.S. Highway 101 in the late 1970s and early 1980s. “There was a frontage road there and we took it over,
and for everything we did, we charged it to the road. Material, labor, everything was charged to a specific road. So we had to have a name for the road. You can't just say you spent $5 million in South Santa Clara County. You had to say what road you spent it on.” Since every road needs a name, Blundo came up with No Name Uno as a placeholder until a permanent name could be dreamt up. No Name Uno was used for documentation purposes while the road was being built and Blundo waited for Gilroy to come up with another name. That day never came. Blundo eventually grew tired of waiting and officially submitted No Name Uno as the street's name. "We were waiting for the city of Gilroy and the county and we

so they winged it with No Name.

School boss to get $150K buyout SCCOE BEGINS SEARCH FOR GUNDRY’S REPLACEMENT Scott Forstner Reporter
Jon Gundry, the embattled Superintendent of Schools for the Santa Clara County Office of Education, relinquished his post after agreeing last week to a six-figure settlement despite two years remaining on his contract. A Nov. 9 statement from the county crafted Gundry’s exit as a mutual parting of ways “that allows the superintendent to pursue other professional interests, and permits the Board to begin the search for a new superintendent.” Board President Michael
Chang said the move was made “in their respective best interests as well as in the best interests of the County Office of Education.” The county board was expected to plot out its next course of action for finding a new superintendent at the Nov. 15 meeting, which was also the final day of employment for Gundry. At least one county school board trustee thinks the next leader of the County Office is already on the existing executive staff. “I believe that the skill sets and strengths that I have seen in leadership currently in place leads me to strongly advocate to identify one of those leaders to take the helm of our organization,” said Claudia Rossi, formerly a member of the Morgan
Hill Unified School District “The evaluation process that Board of Trustees before being culminated with Mr. Gundry’s elected to the county’s governing departure was very lengthy and body three years ago. we had many, many meetings Rossi also stressed her belief as a board to evaluate his perthat an immediate and perma- formance on areas of focus that nent replacement was we used to evaluate his a much better route to leadership of our organigo than appointing an zation,” Rossi said. interim superintenGundry’s three-year dent while conducting a tenure was rocky at times. nationwide search. The Morgan Hill resident said appointing an interim superintendent would create “a prolonged period of uncertainty for staff ” and “not fully empower that person who will be forced to make some tough decisions to reach a balanced budget in June.” “If we didn’t have the talent in place within our organization, I would be strongly advocating for a search,” said Rossi, whose seat expires in November 2018. Rossi, a staunch advocate for special education and at-risk student services, added: “In the coming months under new leadership, I will look to address areas that I have been very concerned about.”
Volunteers get dirty to clean up San Martin INAUGURAL TRASH BASH BRINGS OUT COMMUNITY SPIRIT Scott Forstner Reporter

Altayyeb and Alex Kennett of Real Estate Solutions. “The philosophy of this chamber is not just business-driven. It’s community driven. Yes, we want our businesses to thrive but, for that to happen, we want to build community,” Ludewig said. Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman and GreenWaste partnered with the San Martin chamber to organize the cleanup activity. Prior to shoving off to 10 designated areas, volunteers were treated to a Veterans Day Flag Raising Ceremony conducted by Boy Scout Troop 730 and 799. “The Boy Scouts were phenomenal. You can’t beat a Boy Scout,” said Ludewig. “Their ceremony protocol was a respectful tribute to the veterans, many of whom brought their service dogs from Operation Freedom Paws.” After the ceremony,

San Martin is a cleaner and greener city today than it was last week, thanks to the efforts of about 80 South County residents who participated in the local chamber of commerce’s inaugural Trash Bash and Veterans Day Flag Raising event. Volunteers from San Martin, Gilroy and Morgan Hill met up Nov. 11 at the Sig Sanchez Government Center, 80 Highland Ave., intent on putting in a hard day’s work to help clean up the area. “It was really fun—not fun like I want to do this every week, but it was just very rewarding,” said San Martin Chamber
director Connie Ludewig, who got her hands dirty as part of one of the 10 cleanup teams that was designated to a particular part of town. “We were really happy with the turnout. We had enough for four or more with each group.” Ludewig’s crew covered an area from Fitzgerald Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard to California Avenue and Monterey Road. “We just filled up the truck, dumped it and then hit the road again,” said Ludewig, who was overjoyed with the outpouring of support from the volunteers as well as the local businesses to make the inaugural event a success. Pastries and cookies were supplied by CoPart; Starbucks coffee by PetersonCAT; bottled water by Terry Moriyama of Re/Max Realty Partners; Pizza by My Pizza owner Hamdey

volunteers, equipped with trash bags and gloves, drove out to their territories and gathered up any garbage and debris they could find until their trucks were full. Each group was out from 9 a.m. to noon and one even stayed an extra half hour
to finish the job, according to Ludewig. “Everybody was so nice and it builds camaraderie. It’s nice for people to know their neighbors and have trust among each other,” Ludewig said. “We plan on doing it again next year.”

Gavilan women fall to Reedley The Gavilan women’s basketball team fell 77-51 to Reedley Tuesday night to drop to 1-2 on the season. Sadie Allen led the Rams with 17 points, followed by Jillian foster with 10. The Rams started slow against Reedley, falling behind 25-6 after the first quarter. From there, Gavilan wasn’t able to muster enough to mount a comeback. Gavilan trailed 37-22 at the half, but quickly fell behind by more than 20 after the third quarter. Reedley went up 62-34 going to the fourth and closed things down in the final frame to win by 26. Gavilan will next take on Skyline College Nov. 21 at 7pm.
A PERFECT SEASON ON THE LINE VS SANTA CRUZ
Central Coast Section Division V playoffs. The Mustangs will host Santa Cruz to kick things off.
Cheeto Barrera Sports Editor
This is what Gilroy has been training since January for: The playoffs are here. The Mustangs couldn’t be better set up for a run at a championship. They rolled through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 season. They will have home field advantage through out the playoffs. But perfect plans on paper rarely yield perfect results. And Gilroy is not going to get complacent.
“We’re keeping same mentality,” said coach Jubenal Rodriguez. “After we beat Watsonville, we celebrated the whole 10-0 but after that we don’t care what seed are or our record. We’re entering a whole new season records don’t matter.” Gilroy will need that mentality going up against Santa Cruz who on paper shouldn’t match up against the Mustangs. On the other hand, the Cardinals weren’t supposed to beat St. FrancisWatsonville for a league championship. “I expect a physical team,” Rodriguez said. “They have a runningback who runs hard and isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder. They like to set up their base plays and once
they set them up, they try to run play action out of it.” Johnny Soto has 415 yards through eight games recorded online. And the Yang to his Yin in quarterback Abram Soriano who can sling it with 738 yards in eight games. “Their quarterback is a good, big kid with a strong arm. I’m look forward to the challenge.” But Gilroy has its own weapons. Joseph Barnes has 1,303 yards and 20 touchdowns in just nine games. Christian Rodriguez follows with 686 yards and 11 TDs. At quarterback is Brandon Weiler who has really found his rhythm against Watsonville throwing for 113 yards and a touchdown in a 41-14 win.
“All of us, the coaching staff and everyone are very proud of Brandon Weiler,” Rodriguez said. “We put him in a position where he had to step up and play quarterback for us and he’s done an amazing job. He’s taken on the role, shown a ton of leadership and has taken the team to a whole new level.” Kickoff for Friday is 7pm at Gilroy. The winner will advance to the semifinals to take on the winner of No. 4 Hillsdale and No. 5 Sobrato on Nov. 24. “We’re real excited to be where we are,” Rodriguez said. “To know we have a chance to advance out of Round 1 to Round 2 and if we’re fortunate enough to round 3.”
PLAYOFF SCHEDULE Gilroy vs Santa Cruz Gilroy (10-0, 6-0) to host Santa Cruz (5-5, 5-1). Gilroy is the MBL Pacific Division Champion while Santa Cruz is the Mission Trail-Coastal champion. Kickoff at 7pm at Gilroy. Christopher vs Cupertino Christopher (8-2, 4-2) to host Cupertino (7-3, 5-1). Cougars enter as the No. 3 team from the MBL Pacific while Cupertino is the No. 2 team from the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League-El Camino Division. Kickoff scheduled for 7pm at Christopher. Weiler commits to Menlo Cheeto Barrera Sports Editor
Makenna Weiler’s first tryouts for softball didn’t go as well as she had hoped. She just did enough to make the team at the age of 7, but it helped to teach her a valuable lesson. “Ever since I started, they just always told me to keep pushing and trying to be better than someone,” Weiler said. “There’s always someone who is going to be better than you and you’ve got to try to be better.” That drive to be better helped her through her travel ball career and her career at Gilroy High School. As a result, she
signed her letter of intent to play for Menlo College starting next winter. She officially signed her papers in front of a packed room in the Gilroy library filled with her teammates, friends and family. “Honestly it doesn’t really feel real,” Weiler said. “I saw how many people were here and it doesn’t feel real. I’m so excited.” Weiler is a career .370 hitter, but is coming off a junior campaign where she batted .457 for the season with 13 RBIs and a home run. She said that homer was one of her fonder memories at Gilroy as the first one she hit that cleared the wall.
Weiler is happy to have an opportunity to play at the next level, but it was academics that really pushed Menlo over the edge. She said she is interested in studying business and saw that Menlo was a good school for business. And it helped that the coaches and players at the college were good people. Menlo being just up the freeway from Gilroy helped her make to jump on the school. Menlo College plays in the NAIA Golden State Conference. The Oaks went 31-18 overall and 15-9 in conference play last year.

Cougars hoping to set up a road block for Cupertino Christopher got a muchneeded week off to heal up and get ready for the opening round of the Central Coast Section playoffs. And after rebounding from back-to-back losses to Gilroy and Alisal, the Cougars are feeling good as they prepare for
Cupertino to kick off Division IV play. “That week off definitely helped us,” said coach Pierleoni said. “We had a feeling of four teams we were going to play . We knew we had choice teams and just had to prepare. Last week we got a lot of
polish and we tried to get ready as possible without knowing our opponent.” Cupertino is the No. 2 team in the SCVAL-El Camino Division. The Pioneers are led by Alex Bruckhaus who has 1,573 yards and represents just shy of half of
the total yards gained on offense. But Coach Tim Pierleoni said he looks forward to the challenge after seeing solid running teams all season. “We want to try to stop runningbacks like that. We take pride stopping runners and we’ve done a
good job stopping runners all year,” Pierleoni said. But as well as Christopher has defending running teams, Cupertino might be the best neversay-die team. The Pioneers have won two overtime games that helped to propel them to
a six-game winning streak before falling to Santa Clara to miss out on a league title. Kickoff is slated for 7pm at Christopher. The winner will take on the victor between No. 3 Branham and No. 6 Alisal on Nov. 24.

BOUND FOR SDSU Gilroy pitcher Alex Benavides signs his letter of intent to play baseball for San Diego State.
Mustangs boys and girls take 8th at CCS cross country finals
“I’ll be honest, the first time I went down to San Diego, I wasn’t looking at them as one of my top schools,” Benavides said. “But when I went down there they impressed me big time when they showed me the facilities and when the would run me through what they would do and their ideologies.” And on top of that, Benavides said he just felt like the team valued him as a person and as a player. “They made me feel like they wanted me there and
Gilroy High’s cross country teams competed with an elite group of runners at the Central Coast Championships to offically bring their seasons to an end. After ending their league season as Pacific Division Champions, both the girls and boys teams were entering CCS with confidence yet nervous about the next level of competition. The athletes finished their races spent from jostling with a larger crowd of runners who run their pace and faster.

Alex Benavides knew he was going Division I to play baseball, the question was just going to be where. The standout pitcher originally committed to Nebraska as a freshman, but the opportunity fell through leaving Benavides wanting some place where he could play and where he felt comfortable heading. The answer came in the way of San Diego State, where Benavides officially signed his letter of intent to go play during a ceremony at the Gilroy Library on Nov. 8. “I’m super excited. I really can’t wait at this point, especially doing this so early in the year and no I’ve got to wait the whole rest of the year,” Benavides said. “I’m just super excited in every way possible.” The coaches at SDSU had a little bit of an uphill challenge to get Benavides, but once they got him to campus and showed him around, the convincing was done.
wanted to have me on that team. They took care of me and I really connected with the coaches as well,” Benavides said. “The head coach and the recruiting coordinator really became my second family when I was down there.” SDSU plays in the Mountain West Conference and last year went 42-21 overall and 20-10 in conference play. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament where the Aztecs eventually were eliminated by Long Beach State.

Both the girls and boys teams finished eighth in the Division 2 races. Although the runners did not qualify for state, Gilroy’s runners had much to celebrate as they finished their season. The boys started their season with an average time of 19:01 minutes and dropped it to an average of 17:51 minutes. The boys were lead by senior Chris Chavez who tied his previous personal record of 16:58.
Chris finished 24th out of the 78 runners. The girls started their season with an average time of 22:37 and dropped their average time to 21:24 minutes. The girls had a new leader at CCS, Marianna Bundros lead the pack with a new PR of 21:04. “The team viewed CCS as a learning experience and are looking forward to next year’s season with goals of even faster times,” said coach Cathy Silva.

CHS, Gilroy clean up in league awards With the seasons now over for most Gilroy sports, the end of the season awards have been released. Gilroy had two MVP award winners to go along with 12 first team all league players. For Christopher, six athletes earned First team spots. Girls Water Polo Gilroy rolled through the Pacific Division and cleaned house with postseason awards. The Mustangs were awarded for their 18-5 overall record and 12-0 league mark with the division’s MVP, sophomore of the year and coach of the year. Erika Cates led the team with goals and was among the top goal scorers in the Monterey Bay League and was named the division’s Most Valuable Player. Ellie Pickford— who was right up there with goals, assists and
steals—earned Sophomore of the Year honors from the Pacific. Coach Doug Pickford earned Coach of the Year honors. Cates also led a group of five Mustangs to the First Team list. Joining her were Cheyenne Cates, Dillania Barnett, Katelyn Brolin and Ashley Harding. On the Second Team All Pacific was Ellie Pickford along with Isabel Prieto. In the Gabilan Division, third place Christopher saw its girls rewarded for a 14-9 overall season that led to a Central Coast Section playoff berth. Sierra Ceballos and Tiffani Weberg earned First Team All Gabilan Division honors. Nicole Critzer and Paige Gallardo both earned nominations to the Second Team All Gabilan Division. Maria Higgenbotham
rounded things out with a spot on the All Sportsmanship team. Field Hockey After Gilroy rolled through the Monterey Bay League, the Mustangs took home the lion’s share of league honors after the All League team was announced. Gilroy earned five players on the First Team to lead the league in awards. Christopher, who finished behind North Salinas and Gilroy, took home two First Team All League honors. For the Mustangs, Cami Rogers earned MVP honors after leading her team to a 16-2-1 overall mark and a sweep of the MBL. With Rogers on the first team list were Corinne Lombardo, Korynn Slava, Bella Dominques and Audrey Larson. On the Second Team All League were Kelly Nebesnick, Celeste Perales and Athena Flores.
For Christopher, Julia Davis and Madison Moreno earned First Team All MBL honors. Moreno lead the team in goals with 14 to help Christopher earn a 13-8-1 overall record and an 8-3-1 league record. On the Pursuing Victory with Honor team, Gilroy had Savannah Castro earn a spot with Christopher’s Ganae Gilford. Volleyball The Gabilan All League teams for volleyball were dominated by Hollister, which won the division. However, Christopher did see some accolades after finishing in fourth place following a 13-18 overall record and a 4-8 league mark. Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore standout Maya Tabron, who continues to make a name for herself as she matriculates through high school.
Tabron was the lone Cougar named to the First Team All Gabilan team. Behind her were teammates Jacqueline Patane and Grace Gundy who earned Second Team All Gabilan honors. Junior Vanessa Purnell earned a slot on the All Sportsmanship team. From Gilroy, Maggie Brinkman earned the team’s lone award to the First Team All Pacific Division. The Mustangs went 12-15 overall and 5-7 in Pacific Division play. Brinkman led the team with 135 kills and added 25 aces. Joining her on the All League list was Jade Borges who earned Second Team honors. Gilroy’s representative to the Sportsmanship team was Kiana Lester. Boys Water Polo In the Gabilan Division,
Christopher’s foray up from the Pacific Division saw the team take a few lumps, but the Cougars still saw success in the pool. Chris Critzer helped lead the Cougars and earned the team’s lone spot to the First Team All Gabilan Division. On the second team, Nolan Ciccone and Russell Case earned honors. Case was also named to the Sportsmanship team. In the Pacific Division, Gilroy continued to improve through its rebuild process and was rewarded for the effort with Adam Thompson in the 2-meter earning the lone bid to the First Team All Pacific Division team. Flores also earned Gilroy’s spot on the Sportsmanship team. Behind him were Nathaniel Cazares and Nicky Franco on the Second Team All Pacific Team.
FIELD HOCKEY
Mustangs fall to Mitty in semis Mitty at Saratoga High School on Nov. 8. Gilroy fell behind 2-0 in the first 16 minutes of the game and from there were trying to make something happen on offense, but were thwarted by an excellent Mitty attack. “We had great moments, but I think we played a little
frantic in the beginning,” said coach Adam Gemar. “They got a few early ones on us that helped them and hurt us, obviously.” Still, Gilroy had it moments, including Savannah Castro making a brilliant kick save on a threeon-none break in the final 30 seconds of the game.
Gilroy had a chance at the end of the first half for a goal when Emily Alcoran was one-on-one against the Mitty keeper. The ball was kicked away but not cleared, but in the confusion, the Mustangs weren’t able to pounce quickly enough and were denied.
Robert Eliason
There was just one team that Gilroy wasn’t able to figure out during the season and as luck would have it, that same team eliminated the Mustangs from the Central Coast Section field hockey playoffs. Gilroy finishes the season 16-2-1 overall after suffering a 4-0 loss to
