Five South Valley men, including two from Gilroy and two from San Martin, were charged with running a $235,948 insurance scam where they faked 18 car accidents and billed insurance companies for work that was never done. Brothers Angel Topete, 36, and Joshua Topete, 34, both of San Martin, Eric Harrison, 33, and Gregory Carl Harrison, 53, both of Gilroy, as well as Hugo Lua, 39, of Hollister, were also arrested in connection with the auto insurance scam, which involved 22 people, 18 of whom have been arrested. They will appear in Morgan Hill’s Superior Court this week. Most were friends or family members and at least one is charged in a previous fraud ring. Investigators were tipped off to the ring by an insurance investigator with Farmer’s Insurance, who noticed some of the same vehicles were involved in accidents repeatedly. As part of the scam, members of the ring would buy cheap cars that had been salvaged and damage them. Many times they bought insurance policies weeks before they reported the accidents, according to Deputy District Attorney Charlotte Chang, who has been prosecuting insurance fraud for the county for a decade. They would then fix the cars cheaply at body shops involved in the ring, or not fix them at all and just collect the money, she said. The highest amount paid for a car’s fake damage was $37,723 and the cars included BMWs and Cadillacs. The group had made 18 claims on fake collisions between 2012 and 2015. The Farmer’s investigator noticed that the father of one of the claimants filed the exact same claim on the same car at the

Not one, but two CCS football trophies in the same year will be celebrated by Gilroyans with a big parade next weekend. Parents and coaches of Gilroy and Christopher football players were still putting the details together this week, but they urged fans to mark the date and the time, Sunday, Dec. 17 at 1pm, for a big community celebration of the twin victories last weekend: Christopher won the Division IV Central Coast Section title, and Gilroy won the Division V title, capping an unbeaten season. Mayor Roland Velasco said he’s attending and urged everyone to join him. “This is huge because Gilroy (GHS and CHS) has never won a championship,” he wrote on his Facebook page this week. “Now we have two teams that won!”

High school twins are giving back to their native land MONEY RAISED AT THE GARLIC FESTIVAL IS GOING TO INDIA By Felipe Rodriguez Contributor
In 1997 Gurjinder Singh and Kusum Atraya immigrated to the United states from India in hopes of building a future for their descendants here in the states. Two decades later and they’ve become ideal examples of what accomplishing the American Dream looks like. Case in point, their twin children, Arushi Oberoi and Gobind Atraya, a pair of outstanding students from GECA (Dr. Tj Owen’s Gilroy Early College Academy) who are currently college bound with dreams of their own. However, a common dream they share together is to give back to their parent’s home town of Jagraon, Punjab in India. Every summer, for the past couple of years, they’ve been doing just that by collecting toys and raising money through fundraising outside of the Gilroy Garlic Festival by providing henna temporary
tattoos. They have sent everything they’ve managed to collect back to India. However, this summer they’ve decided to do something more and established their own non profit organization: E.O.S. (aka Educating Our Society). The nonprofit is named after the goddess of dawn, Eos. The name was chosen because they believe that “through education people can find new lives and break the cycle of poverty, kind of like a new dawn, a new day for them”. The twins now have embarked on a mission to help support the educational dreams of students in Jagraon. An advantage that E.O.S has is that it does not bear any overhead costs since all volunteers work for free and the twins are working from home. This allows for all proceeds to be “donated directly to a school, or it will go to someone in the form of a scholarship.” Currently, they’ve been able to help support a student who was struggling to go to nursing school. The twins were able to cover her entry fee and part of her first year fee through the money that they’ve raised and now she’ll be able to graduate soon.
The twins hope to help more people in the future, especially after they finish with their own education. E.O.S is currently working on four projects. They are trying to support a library, motivating children to learn, collecting toys for schools, and fundraising outside of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The twins can be found next year at the Garlic Festival providing henna services. All proceeds will go straight to the organization's cause. They will also continue their toy drive, toys can be dropped off with the twins at the Garlic Festival. The twins want to see other people rise up above and climb the social hierarchy, just like their parents did two decades ago. Yet they can’t do it by themselves. Which is why they are asking the people of Gilroy for support either in the form of donations or by helping spread the word of their cause. Six Gilroy Unified School District students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Students were entered into the competition as a result of their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which was administered nationwide in October 2016. The students include
seniors Mayoli Badoni and Sanaaya Lakdawala, who attend Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy, who have been named as semifinalists. They represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, which includes the highestscoring entrants in each state. Badoni and Lakdawala are part of the 16,000 Semifinalists competing for over 7,500 scholarships worth over $32 million. The winners of the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program will be announced next spring. Commended students recognized for their outstanding performance on the test
include Dr. TJ Owens seniors Abigail Aung and Eryn Yuen, as well as Christopher High School seniors Jennie Kim and Rachel Kogan. They are part of the 34,000 students throughout the nation who received a Letter of Commendation for exceptional academic promise. “We are extremely proud of our students who are moving on as semifinalists as well as those that have been named as commended students,” said Superintendent Dr. Deborah A. Flores. For all of them to achieve such an amazing accomplishment is extremely exceptional considering 1.6 million students entered the competition.”

Man hits fence, dies off Watsonville Rd. A 57-year-old Gilroy man died Saturday at 6:30 a.m. when his 2012 Tundra went off Watsonville Road and crashed into a stop sign and fence. The CHP reported Valter Garafulic may
have had a traumatic medical injury, but investigation is ongoing. The Tundra started westbound on Calle Celestina and made an unsafe turning motion to the right, according to a CHP report. It ran off
the roadway to the right, hit the stop sign and then continued across Watsonville Road, where it hit the fence. The car sat for an hour and 45 minutes until a passerby spotted it and phoned police.

A Holiday Wish
A
lthough many may immediately associate the holiday season with brightly-wrapped presents shared among friends and family, I want to take a moment to encourage people to think about another kind of gift-giving this holiday season: helping those who are less fortunate. It is my wish that during the holidays everyone who is able set aside some time to help others. There are members of our community who do not have the means to purchase gifts for their children, who struggle to put food on the table even though they work full-time, or who may not have a home for the holidays. Additionally, there are those throughout California and across the country whose lives have been devastated by floods, hurricanes, or fires. All of these people could use a helping hand, which can come in many forms and does not need to be a monetary donation. Donating your time can be just as valuable as a donation of money. Your gift of service to others can have a positive impact and help to create a sense of community that may not be there in our everyday lives. You can help food banks package food for the hungry, donate warm clothes to the homeless, visit senior citizens, or donate blood to those in need. My family and I have a tradition of volunteering and I encourage you to volunteer during this holiday season as well. The joy that it brings us is rewarding and a powerful reminder of the meaning of the season. We find the most positive aspect of service to

Gilroy, Christopher win CCS titles ➝ Two Champs, 1
“This is an opportunity to celebrate our kids and our community,” he said. The Mustangs captured their first football title by defeating Menlo School 38-21 on Friday, Dec. 1 at Westmont High in Campbell and completed a perfect 13-0 season. When the Division V championship was on the line, the Gilroy football team turned to the players who already knew what it takes to win a CCS title. Joseph Barnes rushed for 234 yards and five touchdowns and Tony Andrade had four sacks on defense and recovered two fumbles. Both have CCS wrestling titles under their belts. Now they and the rest of the Gilroy team can call themselves CCS football champions. “This is one of the top ones,” Barnes said of how this ranked
with his two CCS wrestling titles. “We never won a CCS title in football, obviously, it feels great.” Tyler Davis ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Ethan Crawford had two interceptions on Dec. 2 as Christopher brought home its first CCS championship with a 24-7 win over Leland. The Cougars, 11-2 overall, secured the Division IV crown on the same field where Gilroy won the night before. Christopher’s win featured a suffocating defense and a run game that wouldn’t relent. The water flew into the air and was dumped onto the back of coach Tim Pierleoni, celebrating the completion of a turnaround for Christopher, which just the year before suffered through a 1-9 season. The three playoffs wins that clinched the CCS title, fittingly, were the same number of wins
the Cougars amassed the prior two years combined. “We’ve been talking about this since last January,” Crawford said. “The last two years were hard, going 2-8 and 1-9 and suffering that loss to Gilroy (on Oct. 6) really hurt, so it was just a bitter taste in our mouths we were just trying to get rid of.” After the game, Pierleoni reminded the team it had been in playoff mode long before the playoffs actually started. The Cougars had dropped back-to-back league games, but ran the table the rest of the season. Beginning in fall 2018, the Severance Bowl moves to a regularly scheduled league game, as both Christopher and Gilroy will be in the top division a new super league, the Pacific Coast Athletic League. The new league will fully

D
r. Daniel W. Gregg, a veterinarian in Morgan Hill since 1976, passed away on November 30, 2017. Daniel was born June 7, 1947, to Warren and Irma Gregg. He grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa where he met his future wife, Jeanne Saathoff. They married in 1970, and the following year Dan graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dan first worked as a veterinarian in suburban Chicago, then moved to the East Bay where he was the surgeon in a busy small animal practice in San Pablo, California. He opened the Morgan Hill Animal Hospital on Monterey Road in early 1976. During his 32 years in business Dan employed several associate veterinarians, and in his final years of practice, his brother, Dr. Stephen Gregg often worked with him. He was voted The Times Best Veterinarian every year the award was given, including in 2009, the year he retired. Until the 101 freeway was completed to San Jose, local veterinarians took all their own emergency calls, working nights, weekends, and holidays. Dan organized the small animal veterinarians in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy into a rotational shared emergency coverage, which freed up their “off ” hours -- especially in the days before cell phones. Dan was an active member of the community, serving on a variety of non-profit boards and committees. He held many positions in Rotary, including president. Dan began scouting as a den leader and continued, becoming an assistant scout master in Troop 799. He was the finance chairman of the Magic Ship of Christmas for many years, and continued his work in scouting long after his son had moved on to college. Dan is survived by his wife, Jeanne, son David, daughter Andrea and husband Sergio Guajardo, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Dr. Richard Gregg and wife, Sarah, brother Dr. Stephen Gregg, sister Patricia Barr and husband Dr. David Barr, as well as many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life honoring Dan will be held January 13, 2017 at 11:00am in the Hiram Morgan Hill room of the Community and Cultural Center in Morgan Hill. onna Lee Benz at the age of 82 went to be with the Lord Jesus and her beloved husband John Mark Benz on Thursday, November 16, 2017. She is dancing on the streets of gold and with the love of her life. Donna Benz, a longtime resident of Morgan Hill, was born and raised in Dinuba, CA.
She is survived by her daughter Markly Benz Machado and husband Manny Machado. Grandchildren Master Sergeant Tristan Ross AkinoBenz, Rachelle Akino and Ruby Machado. Great Grandchildren David Akino, Julian Machado and Jaxson Machado. She leaves behind her sister Betty Pipkin. The two sisters were nearly inseparable and where one was the other was there too. Donna will be forever remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. Donna enjoyed road trips and camping with her husband and sister Betty as well as attending many family reunions. She took pride in her home and loved to sit on the porch and enjoyed the beauty of her country life and all the natural creatures that roamed her property. She also loved and was so proud of her grandchildren. Donna was the true Proverbs 31 Woman of Noble Character. A woman of exterior and interior beauty, dignity, faithful, helpful, noble, provider and strong wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, auntie and friend to many. There will be no funeral service as per her request. A celebration of life will be held sometime after the New Year. oy was born in Magazine, AR to Mildred and Peck Barker. The family, which included sister Deloris, soon moved to San Francisco.
After completing high school in San Francisco he moved with his parents to Redwood City where he started attending Stanford University. After graduating in 1958, he was drafted into the army, where he served at Fort Huachuca, AZ. Upon discharge, he returned to the Bay Area, where he found work as an electrical engineer, eventually accepting a position at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. During this time, he became involved in sports car rallies, where he met his future wife, Nancie. They soon moved to Cupertino, where daughter Cindy was born. Loy enjoyed family outings and backpacking in the Sierras. After his retirement in 1996, he moved to Morgan Hill. He is survived by Nancie, daughter Cindy, and sister Deloris, as well as his nieces. awrence Joseph Berneche, 88, of Columbia, MO, died peacefully on November 25, 2017 at the Truman Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, MO after a short illness. At his request, no services will be held.
Mr. Berneche was born April 27, 1929 in Indianapolis, IN to Theodore Joseph Berneche and Cora Marie (Hawkins) Berneche. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Robert Lynn Berneche and Jerry Douglas Berneche. He attended Kokomo High School and Indiana University. Joe was a Korean War veteran, having served in the Army Medical Corps, 24th Division of 19th Regiment from 1951-1952, attached to an infantry division. After eight days of training, he was responsible for triage of wounded soldiers. After his military service, Joe attended college at Chico State University, receiving a Master’s Degree in Literature in 1963. Joe’s career took him to many places. He taught English at Modesto High School and Junior College. He lived in Panama for 19 years and taught English to Panamanian children and children of military personnel and diplomats stationed in Panama. Joe’s travels also took him to Costa Rica and Australia, before returning to the U.S. after his retirement. He was a talented writer and deep thinker, always working on a novel that would capture his perspective on life. He was an avid tennis player in earlier years and enjoyed golfing later in life. Joe is survived by his three children, Cynthia Wilhite of Atwater, CA, Sandra Cheek of Moro Bay, CA, and Kim Joseph Berneche of Morgan Hill, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, sister-in-law Joanne Zucco Berneche of Columbia, MO, and sister-in-law Sheila McGinnis Berneche of Kokomo, IN. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff and medical professionals of Truman Veteran’s Hospital for their excellent care and support during his illness. Techology to shape hospital’s future NEW DIRECTOR SAYS MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY CAN OVERCOME FUNDING PROBLEMS By Brad Kava

St. Louise Regional Hospital’s new chief medical officer wants to see the 93-bed medical center grow, incorporate cutting edge technologies and focus on the newest cancer treatments. Dr. Arthur Douville takes over the helm of the South Valley’s hospital, as well as San Jose’s O’Connor Hospital on Jan. 2. The sister hospitals are owned by Redwood City’s Verity Health Systems, which was formerly Daughters of Charity Health System, and owns four hospitals in Northern California and two in Southern California. “It’s not a backwater,” Douville said in response to a reporter asking why he left bigger facilities in the county. “The facility is a crucial element of medical care in the community for starters. Look at its location, between Hazel Hawkins and Kaiser. It’s the only significant medical facility in the area with a growing community, new people coming in, new businesses. I think it’s a crucial part of the community. You’re going to be
surprised at what’s going to happen at St. Louise.” Among his wish list is improving the emergency room, which now has eight beds that serve 30,000 patients a year. The hospital already has a cutting edge telemedicine system and was the first in the area with a robot that worked for emergency stroke victims, linking them to specialists in Los Angeles. Douville studied St. Louise’s stroke program when he was at Good Samaritan Hospital and used it as a model. “There’s nothing wrong with it now, but I want to keep following up as a leader in telemedicine,” he said. “When I looked at the stroke program, I was amazed at the efficiency. St. Louise can be a leader in some ways for the kind of facility it is, a smaller center for medical care in the community.” Verity’s management wants to make high quality cancer treatment a focus for its hospitals, he said. “We want to leverage the expertise of an urban medical center.” Douville said he’s concerned about possible federal cuts to medicare and Medi-Cal. “We should all be concerned about the effect on hospitals being able to provide safe and practical care,” he said. “But I think technology and better communications among caregivers will allow us to overcome any of these challenges.”
CUTTING EDGE Dr. Arthur Douville has worked in major hospitals around Santa Clara Valley,
including Stanford but sees a bright future in growing Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
He scoffed at an assertion by Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) that emergency rooms should be allowed to turn away patients and refer them to walk-in clinics or their own physicians at a later date. A federal law passed under President Ronald Reagan required emergency rooms received Medicare funds to treat all patients. Before that, some hospitals turned away patients who couldn’t afford treatment.
“That simply contravenes medical ethics and everything that is required for hospitals these days, as well as normal human compassion,” he said. “That’s Tennessee, not our community.” Douville was raised in Kansas, outside Kansas City, Missouri and got his MD from the University of Kansas, before moving west to study neurology at Stanford. He’s been in medicine for 30 years,
including stints at Good Samaritan and Mission Oaks hospitals. St. Louise Regional Hospital opened in 1989 as Saint Louise Hospital in Morgan Hill. The hospital moved to Gilroy in 1999. Dr. Douville’s wife, Sherri, works for a startup called Medigram, which is a mobile communications software at data aggregation service that works with healthcare teams. The couple lives in Los Gatos.

County leader opposes Gavilan bond SAYS PROPOSED CAMPUS LOCATION IS OUT OF LINE WITH COUNTY GENERAL PLAN Staff Report
San Benito County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jamie De La Cruz announced on Tuesday his opposition to a potential $248 million bond measure for Gavilan College. The Gavilan Joint Community College District Board of Trustees is considering placing
a potential bond measure on the November 2018 ballot after a recent survey found district residents from Hollister to south San Jose were in support of the measure. Of those surveyed, 65 percent were in support and 27 percent against. If approved, the bond measure would fund facility upgrades at the main Gilroy campus and build a new satellite center in San Benito County. According to Chairman De La Cruz, the location of the county campus, known as Fairview Corners, is not congruent with the county General Plan or the best interests of a majority of
county taxpayers, business community or student population. “I was elected to serve on the Gavilan College Board of Trustees when the original 2004 Measure E bond was proposed,” De La Cruz said. “At that time, I was assured by staff and fellow trustees that the proposed campus would be centrally located to the hub of San Benito County, conform with General Plan guidance and best urban planning management practices. None of that materialized when Gavilan College chose to purchase property for a campus at its present location and I cannot condone taxpayers and my constituents
being obligated to support a poorly planned community college campus at a location that will be difficult for students to travel to, further degrade county roads and discourage business interests from providing goods, services and hospitality support to our community.” Gavilan College, in partnership with Morgan Hill-based developer Dividend Homes, purchased Fairview Corners for $8 million over a decade ago, but no construction has taken place. Gavilan officials previously stated the delay related to environmental mitigation and bureaucratic red tape at the state level.
Groundbreaking for Fairview Corners could be expected at the end of 2018. “Gavilan College must make a better effort to earn the support of San Benito County government officials and the community at-large,” De La Cruz said. “I would encourage its management and Board of Trustees to listen to the needs of our community and make future plans accordingly. Under my watch, San Benito County will not be stuck with a substandard community college location that doesn’t conform to the General Plan or serve the best interests of students, taxpayers or the local business community.”

Since 1973 hairdressers Stan Sotello and Mark Shiplett have been decorating Robert Raymond Salon, which has been at 7465 Eigleberry St. for the past 17 years (it used to be across the street). Their collection got bigger and bigger and floor space got smaller, so they found innovative ways to display their Christmas-themed wares on the ceilings and walls. The place looks like a winter wonderland with different themes, including very old ornaments, children’s toy ornaments and traditional ones. On Sunday, Dec. 17, they are selling off some of the collectibles and donating part of the profits to South County Tailwaggers, the dog rescue organization.

Lots of wagging at this wild contest South County Tail Waggers raised more than $1,500 in its first Photos with Santa and Doggie Dress Up Contest Saturday. “I turned around and all of a sudden there were 20 contestants,” said Marguerite Murphy, of the nonprofit that rescues animals scheduled to be killed. “It was pretty awesome.” “Originally I was nervous about this because I didn’t want the dogs to lose their dignity. I didn’t want people laughing and joking about the dogs. None of them looked unhappy. When the Central Coast Section Division V championship was on the line, the Gilroy football team turned to the players who already knew what it takes to win a CCS title. Joseph Barnes rushed for 234 yards and five touchdowns and Tony Andrade had four sacks on defense and recovered two fumbles. Both have CCS wrestling titles under their belts. Now they and the rest of the Gilroy team
can call themselves CCS football champions. “This is one of the top ones,” Barnes said of how this ranked with his two CCS wrestling titles. “We never won a CCS title in football, obviously, it feels great.” The Mustangs captured its first football title by defeating Menlo School 38-21 on Dec. 1 at Westmont High in Campbell and completed a perfect 13-0 season. “I wanted this bad since my freshman year,” Andrade said.
“Ever since my freshman year I said I wanted to bring a CCS title to Gilroy.” “I knew we were going to be competitive. I knew the weight lifting would make us strong,” said coach Jubenal Rodriguez. “But I never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be 13-0. This championship is for the City of Gilroy. For the alumni who played for Gilroy. All the cheerleaders in the past. This is for the alumni. Definitely.” If you needed a personification
of just how much Gilroy wanted to pick up the win, you need look no further than Spencer Soares. Soares made sure his team was fired up coming out of half, pacing the sidelines and shouting encouragements. With the team leading 24-14 and just over 4 minutes left to play, Soares again paced the sidelines imploring his team to keep fighting. “Four minutes and 4 seconds. That’s all I’m asking from you!” “It gets everyone’s blood
going, even the coaches,” said quarterback Brandon Weiler. “I’d be surprised if the fans weren’t getting their blood pumping too.” Then when the team celebrated its victory, it was Soares who went charging at the MVP of the night, laying out Barnes in a massive hug. After the game, Pierleoni reminded the team it had been in playoff mode long before the playoffs actually started. The Cougars dropped backto-back league games and found themselves needing to win out to help secure the playoff berth. “It just shows some resiliency from the kids and some really, really hard work. I think in a way losing those two games catapulted us into this,” Pierleoni said. “When we lost against Alisal, I told the kids when we came back that Monday, we were in the playoffs. It was time. Tyler Davis ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Ethan Crawford had two interceptions on Dec. 2 as Christopher brought home its first Central Coast Section championship with a 24-7 win over Leland. Just 24 hours after crosstown rival Gilroy won the Division V championship, the Cougars secured the Division IV crown on the same field, at Westmont High in Campbell. And Christopher (11-2 overall) did it with suffocating defense and a run game that wouldn’t relent.
The water flew into the air and was dumped onto the back of coach Tim Pierleoni, celebrating the completion of a turnaround for Christopher who just the year before suffered through a 1-9 season. The three playoffs wins that clinched the CCS title, fittingly, were the same number of wins the Cougars amassed the prior two years combined. “We’ve been talking about this since last January,” Crawford said. “The last two years were hard, going 2-8 and 1-9 and suffering that loss to Gilroy (on Oct. 6) really hurt, so it was just a bitter taste in our mouths we were just trying to get rid of.”

And when his team needed him the most, Weiler didn’t let it down. Rodriguez was especially impressed because Weiler not only played both ways, but he played quarterback and inside linebacker and excelled in both positions. He threw for 124 yards on 6 of 15 passing and no interceptions. In one of the key turning points of the game, Weiler stood in the pocket as Menlo defenders bore down on him. Just ahead of getting smashed, Weiler delivered a pass to Max Pierce who had a defender draped all over him. Pierce made the catch and fought his way for a 36-yard catch and run that set up Gilroy’s third TD of the night. “I was just looking down field and I see him and there were guys coming at me, but I’m going to stand tall and I’m going to release it. I’m going to get it to him,” Weiler said. “I’m glad I did because I can trust him to bring the balls down even when they’re not the best.” From there it was all Gilroy as Barnes scored from three yards out then scoring from 41 and 50 yards out in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
“We always say Mo-Joe. We’ve got to keep giving him the rock,” Rodriguez said. “And he’s an even better person. He’s a great football player, but he’s a better person.” Gilroy trailed 14-10 going into the halftime break after Menlo answered a late Mustang score with a touchdown with 40 seconds left in the second quarter. But the Mustangs have proven to be a second half team and they did it again to capture the title. Gilroy outscored the Knights 28-7 in the second half and allowed just 113 yards of offense in that stretch. The Mustangs’ defense was stellar the whole night. Andrew Castro came away with three sacks, including two strip sacks that led to turnovers. Alex Felix—the third CCS wrestling champion on the team—had a sack. Christian Rodriguez had an interception and tipped the ball in the air to set up a second pick. Menlo was just 1-8 on third down and 1-2 on fourth down. Both of the conversions the Knights had came by way of Gilroy penalty. Of Menlo’s three touchdowns, one came on short field that

On paper, this Mustang team should not be in the position it is now. Rodriguez took over the program that had gone 3-7 the season before and saw its coach let go, angering players in the process. Rodriguez went 3-7 his first season, but laid the foundation for greatness. The following year, Gilroy went 8-4 and went to the Division IV semifinals. Then this year, his team ran the table and it left Rodriguez at a loss for words. “I’m speechless. This was a three-year project. I took over a program that was a little lost and the coaching staff brought direction,” Rodriguez said. “The kids were able to trust us and they were able to buy in. Once they did that the program just took off.” His quarterback Weiler wasn’t even the QB at the start of the 2017 season. Weiler unexpectedly had to take over the position and didn’t miss a beat. “All season I prepared in case if the worst happened,” Weiler said. “In that case, it did and I was glad that I was able to step up and get us to where we are.”

followed a fumble deep in Mustang territory. The other two came when Menlo was able to strike quickly against the Gilroy defense. Gilroy took a 3-0 lead after settling for a field goal following a Castro forced fumble and an Andrade recovery. Andrade had two fumble recoveries on the night.
“Honestly I just went out there and wanted to give it my all,” Andrade said. “That’s all I did was give it my all.” Menlo answered following a Gilroy fumble that took two plays capped with Simbeck hitting Aidan Israelski on a nine-yard shovel pass for a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.

going to start right now and if we lose we’re out. And they took that to mind and started working extremely hard.” Davis had 109 of his 163 yards rushing in the second half to help put the game away, including scoring the backbreaker in the third quarter on a nine-yard run.
“I love them. I can’t make plays without them,” Davis said of his offensive line. “He is an extremely tough young man,” Pierleoni added of his running back. “He’s shown it every time he steps on the football field. Not only on the offensive side, but the defensive side as well.” Meanwhile, the Christopher
passing attack led by first-year starter Ben Sanford helped to open up the run game with 140 yards on 15 of 24 passing with a touchdown. From there, the defense took over. The Cougars held Leland (11-2 overall) to 184 yards of total offense, 65 of which came on one play.
The Chargers’ leading rusher Kyle Anderson, who averaged 162.7 yards per game was limited to 52 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Carson Yates threw for just 34 yards on 9 of 16 passing with three interceptions. Christopher was relentless getting into the backfield, coming away with three
sacks—two by defensive tackle Joe Fleming—and three tackles for loss. The only blemish for Christopher came at the start of the third quarter when Yates took the ball 65 yards on the second play of the half for a touchdown to cut what had been a 10-0 halftime lead down to a three-point game.
