Head— Sunday was no holiday for USPS Starling MAIL SERVICE IS STRONGER THAN 30 EVER, DESPITE EMAIL

By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

Twas the morning before Christmas and all over the Gilroy, Santas in blue brought presents and joy. Christmas Eve 32 carriers and clerks with the United States Postal Service in Gilroy delivered over 3,000 packages–most of

which, Christmas gifts ordered on Amazon– were just in time to fulfill Christmas dreams. And on a Sunday to boot. Lots of people are surprised to see USPS workers out on Sunday. A few years ago, the prevailing thought throughout the country was that the USPS would cutback to five days a week for delivery. Amazon changed all of that. “It was a game changer,” said Gilroy Postmaster Max Janisch. “This is the first year that online sales have outpaced retail.”

A quick survey of the sorting room at the Gilroy Post Office at 6:30 am showed a sea of smiling packages bearing Amazon’s trademark smile. Psychic sees upturn in the new year FOUR MORE YEARS OF THE PRESIDENT, STRONG ECONOMY Brad Kava Editor

Brad Kava

We tried to get a reading on 2018 from the person who operates a psychic business on Monterey Street downtown, but when we walked in the door, we were shooed out by a woman who said she lived there. She told us to call the number on the door, but never did follow through with the reading or show up when we scheduled an appointment. Luckily, we ran into Psychic Susie Stevens, who lives in Santa Cruz, but works in Gilroy four days a week selling biscotti from Palo Alto. You may have seen her on the street or in restaurants peddling her wares. She’s on the waiting list to move to Mission Oaks in Hollister, “a beautiful community with a manager who is the most spiritual person.” That said, her car license says “PSYCHIC,” so we thought she had the best credentials in town. Unlike some who calls themselves clairvoyants but don’t deliver specifics, Susie laid it all out for politics, economics and whatever we asked. “I do see the economy getting better,” Susie said. “President Trump actually has a lot to do with that from the standpoint of people liking and believing that he has business expertise historically and in the past for him. There is a credibility people have for him. Wall Street will respect it. His confidence, whether real or not, he articulates it so completely, the economy is following his lead. Plus, Jupiter is now in Scorpio. It will be for the next year and Scorpio is about having power and people having confidence. “Now we’re in a very decisive

WINNING BIGLY Local psychic says Gilroy will boom this year as will Hollister. So will the U.S. economy. and powerful time, the time of Scorpio. Things will start moving like a tidal wave for the economy. Even the year after that and after that.” Unlike many psychics, Susie isn’t afraid to go out on a limb and nail down specifics. “I predict Trump will be staying in office and he’s going to win again. His vice president won’t be Pence. It will be Nikki Hayley, who he will reluctantly choose.” Susie has done radio shows and had columns in newspapers, including the Santa Cruz Sentinel and KWAV radio.

As for Gilroy: “Half of Gilroy is really creating change and the other half fights it. It’s a tug of war, a conflict. I feel like the people who are afraid to make changes with small businesses will get caught up in having to change. I see a couple of businesses sold and what will take their place is technology.” She likes Gilroyans. “There is a vibration of warmth and people’s eyes are clear. They listen. They are kind and fun. iPhones don’t dictate their lives.” However, the real boom is in

Hollister, she says. “Hollister will become THE town, but the people in Hollister will discover Gilroy on weekends, bringing more money and energy. Other cities will get to know Gilroy, not just for the Garlic Festival. It will become the ‘in’ place to go. San Juan Bautista won’t do as well.” As for war or peace in 2018 with North Korea, she says, Trump will gain the upper hand. Near Kim Jong Un’s birthday in Capricorn, Trump will do more cease and desisting. Even if Korea sets off a missile, the

worst one, Trump will shoot it down. That will be the end of the North Korean leader’s arrogance, slash psychotic episodes. We can attribute it to Trump, even though the media hates him.” Her other big prediction for 2018 is that romantic love will make a comeback after years of promiscuity and sex harrasment cases will go up even more but then balance out and drop. To get a reading from Susie, who does house calls, reach her at (831) 588-9801.

“Budget and Contract Amendment with West Coast Arborists for Tree Maintenance,” - an affirmative vote that approved $258,000 for emergency tree removal; was considered misleading. The city won the lawsuit and went ahead to remove the tree with the promise to replace the 235 trees with 475 new trees over the next five years. “The good news is that with recent budget approvals, the city has plans to replant 95 trees each year for the next five years, effectively

planting 475 trees and more than replacing the trees removed,” the City of Gilroy said in a press release in August. A total of 69 sites on Miller Avenue, Eigleberry, Forest, Fifth and Alexander Streets have been chosen for the planting of new trees. West Coast Arborists will plant Valley Oaks, Red Maples, Southern Live Oaks, Silver Linden and Cork Oaks. The city selected five sites on Miller Avenue to plant Valley Oaks, which were recommended due to drought tolerance and because the trees are

native to the area. Forest Street had 16 sites chosen for Southern Live Oaks which are also drought resistant but will also complement the evergreens already found there. Fifth Street will see Silver Lindens, which will tolerate varying growing conditions on 13 sites. Alexander Street will see the fewest new trees with only four sites chosen for the planting of Cork Oak. The most extensive tree planting will happen on Eigleberry Street where the city has decided 31 sites to plant Red Maples.

OPINION LETTERS A councilman’s resolutions 2017 was a year where most of my personal resolutions were met. I set a resolution to run at least a half marathon with record time and a stretch goal to complete a full marathon. A few minor health set backs prevented the stretch goal so I resolve to tackle this in 2018! From a city government perspective there were a number resolutions made that we should all be proud of. We resolved to repair and improve our road conditions, improve pedestrian and cycle safety and tackle some of the most dangerous intersections. In 2018 I resolve to track and report all miles of improvements in a pavement condition and road improvements. We also set a resolution for economic development. I agendized a workshop to discuss Hecker Pass and further develop tourism. At this workshop we introduced Solis Valley as a destination and agreed that tourism should be a tenant to our economic development strategy. In 2018, I resolve to see our economic strategy through by focusing on tourism, establishing downtown as destination, 10th street and First Street as economic development zones. More to come on this! Finally, I resolve to improve my own personal communication with Gilroyans. Look a few new website DanielHarney.com and a monthly newsletter for more information on current events in our city.

Dan Harney City Council

A special local place that supports cancer victims and their families

T

he day my beautiful daughter Amani was born… I prayed, “Help me be a good father to this precious little girl; let me guide her, teach her. And, Lord, when the boys start coming around, please give me patience.” Seven years later, my wife and I were back at the hospital, clinging to memories of Amani’s sweet birth, as the doctors said these terrible words: “Your daughter has cancer, a tumor on her kidney.” I can’t describe how it feels to hear those words. We fathers want nothing more than to protect our children. But in these circumstances, what would that mean? I knew I needed to be strong, to comfort my wife and our other daughters. But honestly, I wasn’t feeling strong when I heard those words. Then they said something I didn’t understand. “You’re lucky,” they told us. “You have something in your community that most communities don’t have. It’s called Jacob’s Heart, and you won’t be alone in the days ahead.” At the time, I had no idea what that meant. But within days, it all became clear. Jacob’s Heart has guided us every step of the way, providing what we needed when we needed it–people to talk to who understood what was happening, information and explanations when we were confused, even gasoline for our car so we could make the countless trips back and forth to the hospital, and groceries when we couldn’t get to the store. Perhaps most importantly to me, Jacob’s Heart introduced me to Vince, whose son Renzo survived the same kind of cancer Amani had. When we met, I told Vince we were on our way for a scan. Vince, knowing exactly how I was feeling, said, “Oh, you have scan-xiety … Every time my son went for a scan I felt that way.” Words fail when I try to describe how comforting it was to be with a father who knew exactly what I was feeling.

Vince and I became fast friends, as did our families. Today, with Amani and Renzo both miraculously well, Vince and I are helping other fathers survive their scanxiety, holding them close to our Jacob’s Heart family. You too are a part of that family, generously making it possible for all of us to benefit from this extraordinary, essential organization. I honestly don’t know how we would have made it without Jacob’s Heart.

Jacob’s Heart has guided us every step of the way, providing what we needed when we needed it–people to talk to who understood what was happening, information and explanations when we were confused, even gasoline for our car so we could make the countless trips back and forth to the hospital, and groceries when we couldn’t get to the store. Today, I offer my deepest thanks to you, and ask that you join us again by supporting Jacob’s Heart as generously as you can. Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar, so you'll have twice the impact on the lives of children like my Amani. Together, we’ll be strong for the next child and family. And together, we’ll ensure that no parent walks this road alone.

Downtown bike parking for the future Each artistic bicycle rack will provide four parking spots, serve as a way finding sign, and public art. There is a 2"x10" space for a plaque. For a donation that will be similar to the Bench Plaque Program through the city. Here’s a teaser...we have a Bicycle Share Program that wants to come to Gilroy! I’ll have more info after the New Year. Zachary Hilton Chair, Bicycle Pedestrian Commission Via Gilroy Dispatch Facebook page

City approves senior project with no sidewalks This project was approved despite the fact that the developer is not required to install sidewalks or consider any safety improvements for pedestrians. How shall we serve our growing and aging population? There is no bus service and with no sidewalks there are no safe paths along this commercial corridor and gateway to our downtown. I hope you understand why I continue to vote against projects that have poorly planned transportation links to essential services like grocery stores, doctors and drug stores. Can you imagine being a senior and having to walk more than a mile with no sidewalk on Monterey Road to reach a grocery store? If you don’t know where this project is located, it is next to the old Dispatch printing factory south of the theaters. Smart growth means we plan for multi modes of transportations. Walk, bike, drive and public transit should all be options. We can not allow builders to come into Gilroy substandard projects and walk away. No rest for Santas in blue this year Mail, 1

have entered into a partnership with the USPS to help deliver for them. Last year the Gilroy Post Office delivered 137,000 packages. This year, it's up to 158,000. “I’m actually on vacation, but I wanted to come in to help make the customers happy,” carrier Edwin Natividad said. “The time-and-a-half pay helps too.” Natividad, a 30-year USPS carrier from Gilroy is nearing retirement. He's a trainer at the Gilroy Post Office and also a familiar smiling face to the people on his route. He said he felt like Santa bringing the lastminute gifts that help makes Christmas magical in thousands of Gilroy homes. “On normal delivery days we get about six or seven truckloads a day,” Janisch, a Marine veteran from Dousman, Wisconsin said. “During the holiday season, it's up to 17 truckloads a day. We've never had so much. Never.” Clerks came in at midnight to get started with the sorting and processing and starting at 7am the carriers arrived and loaded up for the day. Fresh hires or non-career mail carriers usually perform Sunday delivery, but in December veteran mail carriers may volunteer to tackle the influx of holiday packages. To help all the Mr. and Mrs. Clauses get home to their respective North

JINGLE DOOR BELLS Carrier Edwin Natividad’s first delivery on Christmas Eve brought a last minute gift for Angela and Allison Jordan. The Jordans did not expect to be photographed that early in the morning. Poles, 15 additional volunteers showed up. “Safe, sane and Santa guys,” Janisch said during a morning pep talk. “There’s going to be a lot of kids out there today so drive careful and have a big smile on your faces.”

Natividad’s first delivery was for Allison Jordan on Cedar Court. He's been a familiar face on Cedar Court and this morning he brought Jordan a package of college t-shirts from her best friend at UC Riverside.

“It’s amazing; she said she had to have it and we didn't think it would get here before Christmas,” Angela Jordan, the Gavilan student's mom said. “We're really going to miss this guy.”

Well, maybe Allison’s gift will come on the next truck. They’ll be coming in all day. “Hey wait a second. This has your name on it,” Allison said, noticing the package was meant for Angela.

Floods, fires and traffic signs marked 2017 End of Year, 1

February, complete with petitions and three hours of public commentary, the city council decided to keep the no-left-turn signs and conduct further traffic studies on Upper Welburn. That was until May, however, when the council decided to reverse course and take the controversial signs down. The incident reaffirms the popular dictum that “all politics is local.”

High-Speed Rail in slow motion

The High-Speed Rail Authority came to Gilroy in April to listen to feedback from residents about where they favor putting new train tracks. Plans for and decisions about where tracks will be placed in Gilroy were fast as a speeding caterpillar, as talks about the oncoming bullet train seem

stuck in neutral. Members of the public, who like many on the city council, may wish that the High-Speed Rail would just go away; but those hopes may be forlorn. Legislation has already been passed and construction on parts of the line have already begun in the Central Valley. The big questions in Gilroy regarding the High-Speed Rail line appears to be when it will be built and where the tracks will be located. The two choices are running it through the downtown, which opponents say would harm local businesses for years, or running it near the Outlets, where opponents fear it would stymie turning downtown into a commuter hub and spur business. They also fear it will cut through valuable farmland. ➝ End of Year, 15

status. Meanwhile, traffic restrictions on Upper Welburn Avenue and Mantelli Drive brought resident's blood to a boil as 200 of them packed the cafeteria at Luigi Aprea Elementary School for a town hall meeting. The neighborhood inundated Mayor Roland Velasco with calls protesting the installation of a no-left-turn sign erected on Upper Welburn Avenue; installed as part of a $25,000 temporary measure to curb speeding on the block. It backfired. Traffic stacked up in the neighborhood, especially at Pacific Point Christian School, enraging residents and further taxing the limited resources of the GPD who was asked to direct traffic. Despite packing the city council chambers in late

GILROY DISPATCH

High speed rail plans are crawling along End of Year, 11 speeding on the block. It backfired. Traffic stacked up in the neighborhood, especially at Pacific Point Christian School, enraging residents and further taxing the limited resources of the GPD who was asked to direct traffic. Despite packing the city council chambers in late February, complete with petitions and three hours of public commentary, the city council decided to keep the no-left-turn signs and conduct further traffic studies on Upper Welburn. That was until May, however, when the council decided to reverse course and take the controversial signs down. The incident reaffirms the popular dictum that “all politics is local.”

Not a tree-mendous year for Gilroy trees

It was a rough year to be a tree in Gilroy in 2017. The city contracted West Coast Arborists to remove 275 trees that were deemed to be dead, dying or risks for dangerous falling limbs. Later in the year, it was revealed that Gilroy was no longer a Tree City USA after failing to re-register with the National Arbor Day Foundation. In March Gilroyan Camille McCormack decided to stand tall for the condemned trees and hired attorney Laura Beaton to sue the city and stop the removal alleging that the city's $258,000 contract with West Coast Arborist violated

state law. The lawsuit was eventually tossed and the removal went forward, but the city has pledged to replace the felled trees with 475 new trees over the next five years.

39th Garlic Festival one for the books - the Guinness Book of World Records that is

Now Gilroyans can boast of the Guinness Book of World Records Gilroy Garlic Festival. At a ceremony held in July on the main stage, Guinness Book of World Records official Christina Conlon bestowed on the Garlic Festival the title of being the largest garlic festival in the world. This year's festival attendance of 102,667 saw a 20,000 increase from the previous year, due in part to celebrity headliners, Food Network's Giada de Laurentiis and Master Chef Shaun O'Neale.

Alexander Station Apartments: not so great, say many Gilroyans

Gilroy's twin tallest buildings in the city also happen to be the most controversial. The Alexander Station Apartments sticks out like a sore thumb according to many Gilroyans who see the development as an anathema to Gilroy's small-town ambiance. Others, who either feel the economic pinch or sympathize

Louis F. Doyle Attorney at Law, San Martin Living Trusts, Wills, Probate Taxes, Returns & Audits Real Estate, Civil Litigation Family Law, Criminal Defense

with those who do, see the affordable living apartments as a necessity as rents continue to climb. The Alexander Station Apartments are a hot topic on Facebook and rumors have persisted that low-income residents from Oakland would be bussed in to fill the apartments. When news broke that 162 of the project's floors were sinking, doubt swirled even faster. The project lurches forward towards its completion in the new year.

Great Wolf Dodge

Gilroy's flirtation with Great Wolf Lodge brought the possibility of another behemoth building project to the city. Many Gilroyans howled in protestation and a Great Wolf Lodge representative, sent to woo the city and its citizens, was figuratively torn to shreds by a pack of angry Eagle Ridge residents. The gates seemed to close owing to a more "shovel ready" location in Manteca, as Great Wolf spurned the city's advances, asking for $20 million in incentives. For now, the land astride Gilroy Gardens will remain fallow, for it appears the opportunity has slipped away.

accidentally lit on a dry grassy toe on the foothills near Ballybunion Court. The Gilroy Fire Department was on the scene in minutes to assault the blaze, humping uphill in a battle against flame and time. Firefighters from across the state rallied upon the fire and with the help of CalFire

GILROY DISPATCH

DECEMBER 29, 2017

Record year for Gilroy sports champions End of Year, 15

As the GPD turns

When the salacious sex scandal surrounding the Gilroy Police Department in August, Gilroyans lapped in the lurid details alleged by former dispatcher Patricia Harrell in a civil lawsuit she filed against the city. Harrell named names, making the police department seem more like a fraternity house and less like a police department. While the facts and the fiction of the tabloid-worthy cop love drama are yet to be determined, the city officials have met with the lawyer of the plaintiff behind closed doors.

Hail to the champions!

The Gilroy High Mustangs and Christopher High Cougars pulled a double Rocky Balboa this year, both winning their respective CCS division championships.

Pot shops to Gilroy go up in smoke

Hopes to bring retail marijuana to Gilroy was reduced to stems and seeds in November when the Gilroy City Council voted unanimously to uphold existing laws prohibiting the sale and cultivation of marijuana in Gilroy despite changes to the law on the state level. As neighboring Hollister works to incorporate marijuana retail into the community, despite opposition from many in the city, Gilroy stands firm on its prohibition, despite calls in its favor from Gilroyans who feel the economic benefits outweigh the dangers.

ACCOMPLISHED Gilroy High senior Alex Felix is a three-time Central Coast Section champion. He’s also had two third-place finishes at the CIF State Championships. Should Felix win a fourth CCS title and his first state championship, he would go down as one of the Mustangs’ all-time greats.

Felix aims for history emanuel lee Sports Editor

As an undersized nose tackle and cornerback on this year’s Central Coast Section Division V championship-winning Gilroy High football team, Alex Felix could’ve been considered an underdog, as he was routinely giving up anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds to opposing offensive linemen. Nevertheless, the agile Felix had a huge impact in the Mustangs’ success, making plays in a variety of ways through sheer talent, heart and determination. In the wrestling arena, of

course, Felix doesn’t have to contend with heavier athletes, but he probably wouldn’t mind if he did. That’s because Felix— who has signed a scholarship to wrestle at Ohio State next year—has superior technical skills, meaning opposing teams on at least a handful of occasions this season will forfeit the match in Felix’s 138-pound weight class. Felix possesses a solid top and bottom game, and he credited Gilroy coach Greg Varela and Jason Villareal for helping him develop the strong technical skills that are evident

every time he steps onto the mat. A three-time Central Coast Section champion, Felix can make a case for being one of the most accomplished wrestlers in Gilroy High’s illustrious program history if he wins a CIF State Championship this season. He took third at state in his freshman and junior years and fourth as a sophomore. “Winning state is definitely my biggest goal,” he said. “I would love to get a state title under my belt.” Felix knows there hasn’t been much that separated him from the eventual

state champion in the last three years. He’s banking on his previous experience to power him toward a state title in his final goaround at the high school level. “The difference is it’s just a mindset and knowing I put in the work,” he said. “I just have to go out there and let it all go and not hold back. I have to leave it all out there.” Felix’s athleticism, competitiveness and work ethic are off the charts, the reason why he was able to excel this past season playing his first and only year of high school football.

Having focused on wrestling since he was 6 years old, Felix needed a much deserved break from wrestling year-round for one season. So he tried out for the football team in the summer, and his performance along with the team’s achievements surpassed his expectations. Not only did the Mustangs enjoy a fairy-tale 13-0 season, but Felix played a vital role as a starting nose tackle and cornerback, earning all-Monterey Bay League Pacific Division First Team and Rookie of the Year honors.

“It was a great experience,” said Felix, who totaled 12 sacks. “I just loved it. I was a lot quicker than the heavier guys, and wrestling helped me a lot because they weren’t used to using their hands like I was. When they would come at me, I knew what to do to throw them out of the way or get by them.” Felix also had an interception from the nose tackle position, no small feat considering it came against rival Christopher. “The coaches said they had never seen a nose tackle get an interception ➝ Felix, page 20

best upbringing possible. “Growing up I always felt something inside of me that made me want to work hard, and I didn’t know where it came from at first,” said Ortega, who has season averages of 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals per game. “But as I matured, I knew it came from my mom. Just seeing how hard she worked made me want to do her proud.” Ortega has had a huge impact for Christopher, which entered the week with a 7-5 record. In the team’s second game of the

season, a 68-63 loss to San Benito, Ortega recorded a school-record 13—count ‘em, 13—steals. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid would’ve been proud of Ortega’s performance. Ortega combines tenacity with a high basketball IQ to play rock-solid defense. Against San Benito, Ortega kept his eyes on the Haybalers’ ballhandlers before cutting off their passing lanes. He scored 17 points in the loss, with most of them coming on layups off steals. Ortega’s 13 thefts broke ➝ Ortega, page, 20

Eric Ortega is known for never taking a play off, in practice or in the games. He’s the proverbial player who has a motor that never stops, and in Ortega’s case, he’s always stuck in fifth gear. The Christopher High senior post knows no other way to play than going all out. “You will literally never see any kid on any team play harder than Eric does every single game,” Cougars coach Derek Jensen said. “It is a gift that he has. He is having a great season and

has come up huge for us acting as our 6-foot center on our extremely undersized team. He consistently guards players that are 5 to 10 inches taller than him and has no problem with them because he is such a competitor and plays so much more aggressive and physical than anyone else does.” There is one reason why Ortega has a blue-collar, bulldog type mentality on the court and in life. His mom, Gris Ocegueda, raised him by herself, tirelessly working to make sure Ortega received the

Felix aims to be one of Gilroy High’s all-time best said one of his greatest moments came at state in his freshman season. Trailing by four points with 15 seconds left in a quarterfinal match, Felix accumulated five points in rapid-fire fashion, the last points coming as time expired to give Felix a thrilling, come from behind victory. “That is the match I’m most proud of in high school,” he said. Felix will be a heavy favorite to four-peat as a CCS champion, the last three coming at 132 pounds. This season Felix will be competing at 138, and one of the keys to his success lies in being mentally tough, but also enjoying the journey. “It’s constantly going to practice and having a good attitude and mindset,” he said. “I’m always

trying to make the environment fun for the other guys and always cracking jokes because wrestling takes a toll on you.” Felix actually had a bit of disdain for wrestling in his first three or four years of competition. “It’s kind of hard to describe,” he said. “When you’re forced to do it, it kind of made me hate it for a while.” Over time, however, Felix slowly began to develop a love for the sport. He credits his dad, Alex, for never allowing him to quit the sport. “I’m glad my dad made me stick with it,” Felix said. “One of the main reasons why Gilroy wrestling is so good is because we start at an early age and stay with it for many years. Consistency wins.” Does it ever.

➝ From page 19 before in all of our games we’ve had against Christopher,” he said. Christopher attempted a screen pass only to see Felix foil the play by telegraphing the pass and intercepting it. Since Felix is coming off an extended football season, he’s adjusting to the rigors of wrestling. “In football, you have a lot of fast bursts and breaks in between play,” he said. “In wrestling, you have to have that endurance to grind things out because wrestling just wears out your body and lungs. It’s really hard. You definitely need a lot of conditioning to be at your best.” Out of all of Felix’s accomplishments—of which there are many, both at the high school and club level—he

and actions. Ortega’s constant hustle rubs off on his teammates, and he’s not afraid to voice his opinion if players are not givng a max effort. “Eric is the vocal leader of our team,” Jensen said. “He leads by example and also has a tireless work ethic. Eric has made such huge strides from last year. He has become a great teammate and has become very coachable.” Ortega made the alltournament team at the Bob Hagen Tournament at Gilroy High, in which Christopher finished in third place. Ortega said nothing is more satisfying

than coming off the court and knowing he couldn’t have given anything more. He tries to pass his work ethic to his teammates for that very reason. “I just try to push the guys as much as I can because I’ve been on teams where the talent is greater than the effort they put in, and that doesn’t add up well,” he said. “I know since we are a small team, we have to outwork everyone if we want to be a winning team.” Ortega also wants to be a positive role model to his 3-year-old half brother and 5-year-old half sister. “They’re definitely a big

FRIDAY CROSSWORD

motivation to my game,” he said. “I want to be a role model, and that is a part of showing leadership. I want to be a great role model for my teammates and my brother and sister so when they grow up, they’ll have the same work ethic.” Ortega is no stranger to adversity. He has never met his biological dad, and even though it wasn’t an easy experience growing up, he found solace in seeing how hard his mom worked and the love she showed in supporting his every move. “For that, I am grateful to my mom always,” Ortega said.

The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 4280 CANADA ROAD, GILROY, CA 95020 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $2,486,544.63 (Estimated). However, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will increase this figure prior to sale. Beneficiary’s bid at said sale may include all or part of said amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
