It might not be common knowledge, but you can legally drink alcohol in Gilroy parks. So long as you have a permit. The Gilroy City Council voted Monday night to continue to allow consumption of alcohol in public parks on a permit basis at designated areas. Beer and wine can be consumed at the Oaks and Lakeside picnic areas in Las Animas Park, as well as at East and West Mulberry, Walnut, and Sycamore picnic areas in Christmas Hill Park with a valid reservation through the Gilroy Parks and Recreation Department. ➝ Park Alcohol, 2 Barry Holtzclaw

For local grocery stores and pizza places, Super Bowl LII isn’t just the big game; it’s big business. At Nob Hill Foods grocery store in Gilroy, Super Bowl weekend means big holiday business even when a local team isn’t playing. There was a steady rush of

customers all last weekend, and managers of other local stores agreed. “It’s not as big as Christmas, but it’s a big shopping day for food and beer,” Nob Hill General Manager Vito Mercado said. “From the moment we open on Sunday, we start to get really busy after the first mass, and up until kickoff we get pretty slammed. When the game starts, we still have some customers, but it won’t be as heavy. Sunday as it is, is one of the busiest days of the week anyway but having

the Super Bowl adds a lot to our business.” Like any other holiday, Mercado scheduled extra help to manage the buying blitz that ranfrom the Saturday before the game right up until kickoff at 3:30pm. “With the great weather we’re having it’s going to drive even more business,” Mercado said. “It’s like summer so we’re going to sell a lot more tri-tip, sausage, hot dogs and beer.” By beer, he means, lots and lots of beer.

“We typically sell several hundred cases of beer like 30 packs of Coors,” Mercado said. “And with all the microbrews that are coming to the area, we’ll sell a lot of craft beers too.” Mercado can expect to sell lots of tortilla chips, salsa, tomatoes, french bread and hundreds of avocados to be part of appetizer platters. Nearly $7 million in upgrades to the outdoor athletic facilities at Gavilan College are in full swing. The end result will put the

local community college in a league of its own. The multi-faceted project, which provides a complete overhaul of two existing sports facilities and adds a new sport venue to the school’s athletic cache, has three funding sources: Measure E, a local lease revenue bond and the college’s general fund. With the work having started back in July

courts with new fencing and gates are in the process of being installed. Spectators will be treated to an athletics field plaza and walkways to both fields. Construction, which was approved by Gavilan’s Board of Trustees in June 2017 and slated for completion by March 22, will include a new restroom, locker room buildig and outdoor plaza with

Stubblefield attorneys argue to set bail PROSECUTOR: MOTION INCLUDES ‘VICTIM SHAMING’ EVIDENCE Michael Moore Editor

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive end Dana Stubblefield’s lawyers filed a motion asking the court to set bail in his rape case, according to authorities, despite the recent addition of a gun enhancement to the charges. A copy of the motion was not available before Dispatch press time because Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Duong was reviewing it before she decided whether to schedule a bail hearing for Stubblefield, according to Santa Clara County Superior Court spokesman Benjamin Rada. Stubblefield has been in custody at Santa Clara County Jail since the conclusion of his preliminary hearing Jan. 19. A recent news report noted that the defendant’s motion to

set bail, filed Feb. 5, argues that new evidence shows Stubblefield paid the alleged rape victim for a consensual sexual encounter at his Morgan Hill home in April 2015. Morgan Hill Police have said that Stubblefield contacted the woman for a job interview through a babysitting website, and raped her shortly after she arrived at the home. The woman added during testimony in the recent preliminary hearing that he threatened her with a handgun while he raped her. Stubblefield, 46, faces a total of five felony charges in relation to the alleged rape of the victim, who is in her 30s, according to authorities. These charges are forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, rape and oral copulation of a person incapable of consent, and false imprisonment. On Jan. 19, prosecutors added a gun enhancement to the charges based on the victim’s testimony, sending him back to jail without bail. Stubblefield has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

issued in 2015, one in 2016, and four in 2017. “It’s a misdemeanor, but often treated as a fine,” Smith said. “The court takes into consideration how many times someone has gotten that violation before.” The staff report notes that the importance of the ordinance is not determined by how many citations are issued, but by the education and behavior changes. It goes into effect 30 days after adoption.

Craft spirits can boost downtown growth

he recent opening of Golden State Brewery and announcement of two new breweries making their way through the regulatory process at city hall is good news and highlights an exciting opportunity for downtown Gilroy to become a regional destination, by looking at successful examples of other cities. Did you know that in the in the later part of the 18th century and early 20th century, downtown Gilroy had its own working brewery, winery and distillery? You can see pictures at the Gilroy Historical Museum and find other information about their history. Prohibition probably shuttered these businesses and changing laws have until recently prevented their return to downtown. Fortunately for downtown, zoning was changed a few years ago to allow breweries and tasting rooms in the downtown core. The result of that change is now just beginning to bear fruit. Unfortunately left out of the zoning change was any mention of urban wineries and distilleries. That, in my opinion, is a shortcoming and needs to be addressed because breweries, urban wineries and distilleries could be a significant driver of downtown revitalization and private sector investment . Take the example of Vista, California. According to a 2014 article, of the cities within the San Diego County, the one that had seen the most growth in brewing is Vista: 19 square miles, 96,000 residents, and as of that time had 12 breweries, with more in the works. Craft beer has had a profound economic impact on Vista: According to a 2014 report the industry provided $272 million in annual revenue and supports 850 jobs in North County, and area that includes Vista: That's a bigger impact than that of Comic-Con International, the largest convention in San Diego, about 40 miles to the south. Kevin Ham, Vista's economic development

director, says those beer dollars circulate through the local economy and support the creation of additional indirect jobs and more business activity, like new restaurants and boutiques. It's helped revitalize the downtown, Ham says. “We used to have to reach out to businesses to get them to locate here. Now they are coming to us.” Many Vista breweries don't serve their own food but allow food trucks and nearby restaurants to sell and deliver food to their patrons, something Gilroy should consider as well. Ham says many downtown restaurants report a threefold increase in business since the proliferation of brewpubs there. Craftbeer tourism is also growing, says Ham. Vista became a magnet for craft breweries because it made an effort early on to understand the industry's specific needs and changed its zoning codes to not only allow breweries but to streamline the process necessary to get approval. In many ways the brewery community in Vista feels a lot like a startup community— innovation is the name of the game, in terms of brewing techniques and beer flavors—and young-ish hipsters come to taste beer, not get drunk. Another similarity to a tech startup community? Fast growth. Five years ago if someone said they were going to Vista, you'd say, Why? and now people from all around the world come here for the breweries. Because of the antiquated nature of our current liquor and zoning laws, downtown may be missing out on a significant opportunity of sales business there. We need to nurture this green sprout of success and view it as an opportunity. As the saying goes “Success breeds success.” Let's not sit on our hands and lose this opportunity to revitalize the downtown, increase sales, attract new restaurants and boutiques and become one of South County's primary destinations.

OBITUARIES CARL EDWARD BOZZO November 27, 1931 - January 30, 2018

r. Carl Edward Bozzo, 86, of Carmel-By-the-Sea, California died peacefully surrounded by his family on January 30, 2018, at the Community Hospital in Monterey, California.

Born on November 27, 1931, in Richmond, California to Pauline Nasello and Carmen Bozzo, Carl spent most of his youth in San Jose, CA. He graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory in 1949 where he played basketball and boxed. After attending Creighton University, he graduated Dental school in 1956 from St. Louis University. Three weeks later, Dr. Bozzo married the love of his life, Diane Filice at St. Mary’s Church in Gilroy, California. Carl served in the US. Navy in San Diego for two years before opening a successful dental practice back in Gilroy. Together Carl and Diane raised seven children. Carl was a fearless visionary and entrepreneur; after 30 years of dentistry he obtained a Masters Degree at the University of San Francisco and built a managed-healthcare company from four employees to over 150 and served over 500,000 members. Awards and accolades include “Citizen of the Decade” by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and “Entrepreneur of the Year” finalist in Orange County. In life, Carl kept faith in Christ as his central focus and was deeply involved with activities at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach and The Carmel Mission. Carl’s deep faith propelled his enormous generosity toward those in need. Carl’s greatest treasure in life was his family. He is survived by Diane Filice, his wife of 61 years, and seven children: Michele (Lono Mahi), Daniel (Elizabeth), Lisa (Joseph Orlandini), Suzanne, Augustine Francis (Cathy), Christine (JR Daily), and Andrew (Molly). He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his younger brother Sam (Judy) plus countless nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Carl is preceded in death by his mother Pauline, father Carmen and twin sister Carmel Sanelli (husband Floyd-also deceased) and grandchild John Paul. Funeral Mass was held at 10:00am Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at the Carmel Mission Basilica. urelia Monteon Maldonado passed away in Hollister on December 12, 2017, she was 87. Aurelia is survived by her nine children, Miguel, Guadalupe, Gilberto, Victor, Guillermo and Sara Maldonado, and Genoveva Muñoz, Estela Shackelford and Sonia Dorado, twenty-five grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and two greatgreat-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters: Sara, Gabriel, Ramon, Elisa, Jose and Emigdio Monteon; and, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Guillermo Maldonado, parents Juan Monteon and Guadalupe Machuca, sister Guadalupe Monteon and brother Juan Monteon Jr. She worked in the local Tri-Valley cannery for many years. After graduating from Port Huron High School she went to work at Woolworth’s where she met Richard, they married then moved to Gilroy in 1957, had three children then headed back to Port Huron until 1972 when they came back to live in Gilroy. She worked at Gilroy Foods, her favorite job was Wheeler Hospital’s Kitchen another favorite was “Ranch Milk” a drive-thru grocery. For fun she went everywhere with her “travel team” husband Dick and Jack and Evie Jeske. Loved to go to any function that her Children and Grandchildren took part in. She spent a great deal of time socializing with her friends at Hacienda Estates where she lived. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to her Caregivers Julie Crocker and Audra Levine, best friend Shauna Suarez-Boaz and son in law Richard Braquet for their endless support. arcia Lee Joyce Perguidi, 83, passed away on January 31, 2018 in Gilroy at 8:39pm at Saint Louise Hospital after battling a long illness.

Born in Sapulpa, OK on March 5, 1935 to Will Maurice “Skeet” Mondier (aka Wilmorris) and Thelma Ruby Tucker, both of Sapulpa. She was the eldest and only sister of three brothers William “Bubby” Forrest Mondier, Michael Coryell Mondier, and David Leroy Mondier. She was married to her husband, William Mario Perguidi, for 48 years, until his passing on September 23, 2015. She worked for Fairchild Semiconductor for 30+ years. She worked her way up to become one of few employees with high security clearance, opening doors to projects such as the Minuteman Ballistic Missile, and NASA’s Apollo Guidance System. Later, she worked for International Microcircuits Inc. Then semi-retired while working for the Gilroy Library. Marcia was very creative and enjoyed ceramics, crochet/knitting, and various crafts. She held certificates in antique doll reproduction. She loved Old Westerns with John Wayne, and Gene Autry. Country Music like Bob Wills, and Willie Nelson, and she especially enjoyed when her Brothers Bill, Mike and LeRoy would get together and perform. She often reminisced about listening to her Dad, Skeet, play guitar when she was a young girl. She is survived by her children, Daughter Joi Evalyn Redus and Son, Perry Edward Redus both of OK. Later in her career she became an FAA examiner for private pilot licenses. She was a prolific reader and had a wide range of interests.

tephen Gary Suarez, age 71, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Stephen was a disabled Vietnam War veteran and was very proud he served his country. He was with Bravo Company, First 508 Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division and served as a Combat Infantryman, Paratrooper, Sharp Shooter, Assistant Machine Gunner and Aircraft Crewman. He earned several medals, including the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. Stephen grew up in Gilroy. He was on the varsity wrestling team in his junior year of high school. He was in an article in a Gilroy newspaper when he returned from Vietnam to honor his bravery and share his experience. Stephen is survived by his sister Pat Suarez and three sons: Christopher Suarez, Steven Suarez, and Joseph Suarez. He has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Suarez and Nellie Quinn. Authorities arrested a 15-year-old Hollister boy on suspicion of felony animal cruelty after observing a social media video in which he is seen throwing a small Maltese dog to the ground, according to police. On Jan. 30, officers from Sunnyvale Animal Control contacted Hollister Police Animal Care and Services regarding a report of animal cruelty in Hollister, according to a press release. The officers in Sunnyvale obtained a Snapchat video showing a young male suspect posing with a toy breed dog in his arms, before throwing the animal to

the ground. The video appeared to show the puppy land almost 10 feet in front of him. Hollister Animal Care and Services officers conducted further investigation and learned there were previous unreported incidents of cruelty involving the same dog and suspect, police said. Sunnyvale Animal Control also had information of a previous incident in which the suspect had allegedly kicked the dog, making it land several feet away. Hollister officers confirmed the identity and address of the 15-yearold, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile. The city’s animal control officers visited his home Feb. 1 and took custody of the dog depicted in the video—an 8-monthold black-and-white Maltese named “Bella,”

who weighs almost six pounds, police said. Bella was immediately transported to a veterinarian for a health exam, then taken to the Hollister Animal Shelter, police said. On Feb. 3, the teen suspect was taken into custody at his home and booked at San Benito County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of felony animal cruelty, police said. Bella will be housed at the Hollister Animal Shelter until the police investigation is complete. Hollister teen arrested for cruelty to pet puppy

A youth soccer coach who lives in Morgan Hill is accused of sexually assaulting a child athlete that he coached, according to police. Morgan Hill Police officers arrested Marcial Gonzalez, Jr., 27, Jan. 31 on suspicion of sexual assault of a minor, according to a press release from MHPD. He allegedly sexually

assaulted the child at his home. Police are not alleging the sexual assault took place on school grounds. During the investigation, police learned that at the time of his arrest, Gonzalez was employed as a soccer coach at Oak Grove High School in San Jose since November 2017. He was also currently coaching soccer at South Valley Junior High in Gilroy. Police also said Gonzalez previously

worked as a coach for Sentinel Soccer Club, a junior varsity boys soccer coach at Live Oak High School and a local Lyft driver. MHPD is in the process of determining if other victims or witnesses have observed or been targeted by crimes from Gonzalez, the press release says. The softball scorekeeper booth’s concrete wall foundation is in place with wall and roofing installation on the way. Drainage, plumbing infrastructure and electrical underground is in place throughout the site, Harris said. The restroom/locker room building construction is in progress with concrete curbs and walls set, while grading for landscape is ongoing, Harris continued. “The college has spent a lot of time and energy to improve our academic programs and then add this element and it shows the college’s commitment to the overall experience,” Hannon said. “Gavilan becomes even more of a destination because of that.”

The volleyball area fencing and concrete construction work is already in progress with sand and gate hardware to follow, according to Frederick Harris, Gavilan’s vice president of administrative services. Gavilan will be one of only about 30 colleges throughout the state, including 10 in Northern California, to offer beach volleyball and only a select few that have courts on campus, according to Hannon. “For a brand new sport, to be able to have those facilities and have them on campus, not only does have impact recruiting for beach volleyball but it is a positive for indoor volleyball as well because a lot play both sports,” Hannon said. Think of the expression, “find what you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” It’s a nice idea, but reality most often gets in the way, the bills after all, need to be paid. For Eric Ingram, coowner of BBQ 152, Trail Dust BBQ in Morgan Hill and Aptos Street BBQ in Aptos among several others in the area, he has found a way to combine his love of barbeque and craft beer into a career. It’s plenty of work though. BBQ 152 is a family business. Eric, along with his father, Lawrence Lee Ingram Jr. and brothers Franz and Larry got into the barbeque business when Lawrence bought Trail Dust BBQ in November 2002. Since then the concerns he faces as a restaurant owner have not gotten much easier. “There are too many things to list, and it changes almost daily for a small business,” Lawrence said. “Staffing, customer satisfaction, staying competitive, compliance with all of our legal obligations, liability, and supply.”

BBQ 152 opened in May 2011 and with 15 employees, a reputation of awardwinning barbeque and an expansive offering of fine craft brews, they may have outgrown their location at 8295 Monterey Street. “We thought it was a natural progression to move south to Gilroy,” Eric said. “We’ve spoken with the city about relocated closer to the west side of town, perhaps on First Street. Most of the new housing is going up on the west side, so I think customers would appreciate being close to them. There’s a lot available here in Gilroy, but we need to make sure what the right fit is.” Among the family of barbeque restaurants owned by the Ingram family BBQ 152 is not the most profitable location. Sales have grown year by year but at the moment they are doing a little better than breaking even. Location is important, but BBQ 152 depends on its barbeque to set its reputation. With offset smoke burners, smokers and fire burners, quality wood and meat are critical. “Low and slow,” said Eric. “We usually start barbequing at 6:00 am or sometimes at 4:30 am

Ingram and BBQ 152 general manager Jeremiah Robinson make a monthly

pilgrimage to San Diego to pick up a supply of beer for their barbeque restaurants. A few that merit special mention are the Tiger Uppercut, a double IPA from Fieldwork Brewing Company and several craft beers from Alvarado Street Brewing Company out of Monterey. The beer isn’t just good; it’s vital to the bottom line.

“Great beer is the only way to complement great barbeque,” Eric said. “Without the beverage sales, it’s an even harder business. A great beer list is the number one way to stand out amongst every other beer list in town. You will not find a better beer list anywhere else in Gilroy.”

The business of barbeque and beer is just that, business and it’s hard work. But sometimes, work can be fun. “About 10 years ago I thought to myself that I’m living the dream,” Eric said. “I get to eat barbeque and drink beer all day. It wasn’t intentional, but it worked out that way.”

Despite the implementation of new tariffs on imported solar panels, Simmitri Inc Affordable Roofing and Solar is using innovation to ensure that the sun will not set on a budding industry. Simmitri Inc Affordable Roofing and Solar started in 1995 strictly as a roofing company. When Pamela and Richard's son Jonathan Garcia graduated from San Jose State in 2003 with degrees in Environmental Studies and Alternative Energy he brought the idea of branching into solar energy to the family business. “Solar revolutionized our company in a big

way,” Simmitri President Pamela Garcia said. “Simmitri is energy solutions based company that focuses on bringing a balanced and comprehensive approach to the market. Jonathan, Simmitri's Chief Technology Officer, said. “We work with commercial customers, agriculture, non-profits and private homes. We not only bring a leading and balanced approach to solar, but we are also developing innovative solutions for our customers and the market.” Simmitri prides itself on being a company that works individually with their customers to find solutions to their energy problems that precisely fit what they need. “Sometimes when we work with a customer their solutions may not be solar panels, but rather a focus on energy efficiency,”

Jonathan said. “For businesses, they may want to install EV charging stations for their customers. They may also need lightweightflexible solar panels, rather than regular solar panels installed on their roof.” Despite the announcement of increased tariffs on imported solar panels, customers are still able to claim a 30 percent federal tax credit on the cost of solar installation. With the tax credit and the energy-producing potential of solar panels, customers can make their new roofs work for them to save long-term money. “We look at the power quality of a building to see how we can make buildings run more efficiently,” Jonathan said. “We look at LED lighting, heating, and air conditioning, refrigeration and solar to see how we can optimize the energy usage of a

building. That's what we have accomplished for the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce.” Simmitri also offers no money down financing to assist non-profit organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce and St. Clare’s Retreat Center in Soquel. Recently Simmitri installed solar panels at the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Office, giving the city a first-hand experience with their work. “It is expensive equipment, but one of the most expensive things for a contractor is managing the customer’s experience after the solar is installed,” Jonathan said. “We need to make sure the panels are producing the power that the customer needs and a lot of companies aren’t able to do that effectively.” Simmitri is no stranger to innovation, and to help streamline the company's

customer service, they have developed a cell phone app which other solar companies will pay a subscription fee to use. “Sometimes it’s a big logistical nightmare to take care of your customers, and that’s where we shine,” Jonathan said. “We decided that instead of spending more money on employees and overtime, we should invest in technology instead, so we developed the Simmitri app. We’ve been working on the app for a couple of years, and we’re close to releasing it for use by other companies.” One of the newer examples of solar technology utilized by Simmitri, Roofing & Solar is the thin-film solar panels manufactured by MiaSolé, a Sunnyvale based company currently owed by Hanergy America. The innovative solar cell is based on the highest

efficiency thin film technology available today according to Simmitri, and its flexible cell architecture makes it ideal for a wide variety of solutions ranging from commercial roofing solar panels to mobile devices. Since Hanergy does not use silicon solar cells for their thin-film solar panels and because the panels are manufactured in the US, they are not subject to the new tariff. “The solar industry at large is not thrilled with this decision as they predict this will drive the cost of solar panels to the end user by at least 10 percent,” Garcia said. “My hope is that this goal of encouraging more U.S. based production will bring American manufacturing back to our States and we will continue to see new technologies emerge, and America can lead the way into the future of renewable energy.

“I turned her and didn’t even know what happened,” she said. “My body knew what to do before my mind knew what to do.” Orozco and Nebesnick credited Mustangs coach Marty Serrano for being a supportive coach who doesn’t have to yell to make his point and give constructive criticism. “I’ll look at him during a match and know what he’s telling me without him saying a word,” Orozco said. “We have that relationship where I’ll look at her, and she knows what to do,” Serrano said. Orozco was wrestling against Garcia for the third time this season, having beaten Garcia the previous two times by decision, 7-1 and 7-3. “Going into the match knowing Jezebel was bigger than me, I knew I had to wrestle smart and wait for my shots,” she said. Nebesnick is in just her second full season of wrestling, having taken up the sport as a freshman while also enjoying a small stint in middle school. Nebesnick said the key to her successful tournament run had nothing to do with factors on the mat. Rather, it was the things she had to take care of off the mat that was paramount. “I had to make sure I was rested for the tournament and ate a lot after the weigh-ins,” she said. “It’s great to see how much I’ve improved since last year. As a freshman, I was mainly relying on strength and basic skills, but

As the referee raised Adriana Orozco’s arm in triumph—signaling the second year in a row the Gilroy High senior had won a Central Coast Section championship—Orozco had a torrent of emotions. At that point, Orozco was already welling up with tears, and moments later, they flowed down her face as she hugged Mustangs coach Marty Serrano. It was a joyous moment for Orozco, who defeated Wilcox High’s Jezebel Garcia 2-1 in the 160-pound title match. “I felt a lot of emotions hitting me at the same time,” she said. “I realized it was the last time I was going to be able to compete in CCS, the last time I was going to be with the team. It was a very different feeling than last year. Last year, it was exciting and something new winning CCS for the first time. This time, it’s hard to explain how I feel. Just knowing it was my last time made it really special.” Orozco, who improved to 27-1 on the season, advances to the CIF State Championships in Visalia in two weeks. She’ll be joined by teammate and two-sport extraordinaire Kelly Nebesnick, who lost a close match to Watsonville High’s Gianna Mosqueda 6-4 in the 143pound championship match. “Losing in the CCS finals fires me up for state,” said Nebesnick, who also plays on the Gilroy High soccer team and three times a week goes back to back with soccer and wrestling practices. “This was my ultimate goal—to go to state—so I’m excited for this. With soccer, it’s a great feeling accomplishing things as a team. With wrestling, there is more of a feeling of self accomplishment since you’re the only one out there.” Gilroy finished third in the team standings, with 126 points. The Mustangs also received strong performances from Milca Chacon, who finished fourth in the 106-pound division, and Dafne Hernandez, who took fifth

in the 137-pound weight class. Orozco and Nebesnick happen to be training partners in the wrestling room, and they’ve sharpened each other and made each other better. Orozco prevailed in a whiteknuckle affair in the title match, recording a two-point reversal— her only points of the match—in the first 20 seconds of the third period before utilizing great defense the rest of the way. “It was on my mind to not get called for stalling,” she said. Orozco said she had somewhat of an out of body experience during the match, as she produced moves before she was even thinking it. It turns out all of the drills Orozco has done in practice plays out in the matches, almost automatic by nature.

Even though soccer might be Nebesnick’s favorite sport and the one she grew up playing, she has made a rapid ascent in wrestling. Nebesnick comes from an athletic family, as her two older sisters, Megan and Katelyn, were standouts at Gilroy High in wrestling and soccer, respectively.

Megan is a two-time CCS wrestling champion, while Katelyn earned NCAA AllAmerican honors while playing soccer at Cal State Stanislaus. Incidentally, Orozco took up wrestling in her freshman year to avoid playing soccer. Orozco smiled as she recalled how her mom wanted her to play soccer, and the concern she had when Orozco began wrestling. However, the only people who had to be concerned were

Orozco’s opponents, as she has dominated most of her competition. Orozco is a role model to her younger sister, Amarainie, who has attended some of Orozco’s practices. Last year, Orozco took fifth in the CIF State Championships in the 150-pound division. Instead of cutting weight, Serrano had Orozco stay up in her more natural weight so she could get stronger as the season has gone along. And that’s exactly what happened.

For various reasons, the Christopher High girls basketball team has endured more turmoil than the average prep squad. But under first-year coach Shirley Lampkin and forward Makenzie Barnes, the Cougars have rebounded this season, with their chemistry improving as the season has gone along. It’s shown in their results, as the Cougars entered Thursday’s Monterey Bay League Pacific Division game against Monterey at 10-11 overall and 7-3 in division play. “The girls are getting better everyday,” Lampkin said. “You can see it in their eyes because they’re learning and getting it. When things click, you just know it.” Barnes agrees, as she noted the team has jelled, particularly since league play started a little over a month ago. “The team has gone through a lot of changes in the last year, and it’s been tough,” said Barnes, who is the team’s lone senior. “But we’ve gotten through it, and we’re stronger for it.” Barnes plays a vital role as one of the team’s impact

defensive players. “Makenzie is a playmaker and makes things happens,” Lampkin said. “She’s long, very athletic, a good leader, and is a great defender.” Sophia Ayala, a junior guard/forward, gives the team energy by going all out on every possession. “She’s a big-time scrapper,” Lampkin said. “Whenever there is a loose ball, she’s there.” Ayala is responsible for making the most exciting play in Christopher’s season, a buzzer-beating basket in a 46-45 win over first-place Notre DameSalinas on Jan. 25—still the Spirits’ only loss in division play. The shot by Ayala was actually the Cougars’ third or fourth shot of the possession, as they grabbed a couple of offensive rebounds.

She can make some nolook passes and has been a great leader, on and off the court.” Mikaela Santiago, a

freshman shooting guard, has the ability to drive and drain outside shots. It’s no wonder Santiago is the team’s leading scorer. “She’s a very strong and physical player,” Lampkin said. “She never says a word, but she’s deadly. She’s like the Tasmanian Devil, in that she’ll drop her shoulder and drive all the time.” Rhyan Maldonado, a junior guard, is the team’s sixth woman and potent from 3-point range. The Cougars have persevered

throughout the season, including a game against Alvarez in which they finished with just four players due to injuries and illness. Even though the team lost the game, it never gave up. Barnes appreciates every moment she’s on the court, having played the game since she was in the third grade. In Barnes’ first couple of years playing the game, she rarely passed the ball. “I was a ball hog,” she said. “I tried to play one against five, and was very selfish. I’ve

learned to be a team player and share the ball.” The team was at school Monday for Freshman Orientation Night, as they represented the team at a sign-up table to get more girls interested in the program. Lampkin said it was a good sign of the team’s evolving cohesiveness. “They’re trusting each other, believe in each other, respect each other, and have bonded,” Lampkin said. “It’s been quite a challenge, but they’ve really come together.”
