Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee acknowledged he didn’t follow the state law or his own department’s policy when he left his service handgun in his personal truck just before the vehicle was stolen in Modesto April 27. Shortly after the theft, the city’s top law enforcement officer approached Gilroy City Manager Gabriel Gonzalez and encouraged him to initiate an administrative investigation, which is ongoing. “I talked to the city manager because we’ve got a legal issue from the gun not being locked in a box,” in accordance with state law, Smithee told the Dispatch this week. The city’s administrative investigation will be conducted by an outside investigator “who I don’t know,” who will produce a report for Gonzalez’ review, Smithee said. “After that, we’ll have to determine what is the appropriate level of consequence for my action, at least from an administrative perspective,” the chief added.

Family aids research STANFORD STUDY ANNOUNCES A BREAKHROUGH IN BRAIN CANCER Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

Thanks in part to contributions from Unravel Pediatric Cancer, a Gilroy non-profit organization founded by Libby and Tony Kranz, researchers at Stanford have made what could be a potential breakthrough against the brain cancer that claimed the Kranz’ daughter, Jennifer. Stanford researchers Dr. Michelle Monje and Dr. Crystal Mackall published research in

Nature Medicine claiming the first eradication of a severe brainstem tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma in mice, with human trials coming soon. Drs. Monje and Mackall’s research was aided by financial contributions from Unravel Pediatric Cancer, along with the donated brain tumor from sixyear-old Jennifer Kranz, who died from the disease in 2014. “We couldn’t save our daughter, but we can help the last piece of her save other kids,” said Libby Kranz. “Our foundation’s unrestricted funding model is allowing Dr. Monje to do just that.” While not all donated tumors

are viable candidates to be used in research, researchers were able to use Jennifer’s donated tumor to help further their research. “Unravel’s support of my DIPG research program has been critical to the progress we have made and hope to continue,” Dr. Monje said. “Together, we are moving closer to our goal of an effective therapy for children with DIPG.” Unravel Pediatric Cancer advocates unrestricted funding, meaning that researchers are free to use grants given by Unravel as they see fit. “What makes us different is what we fund and how we fund it,” Kranz explained. “We fund innovative things. We support new ideas. We

find new researchers who have new ways to fight cancer. We have unrestricted funding, and if we want to fund something specific, we don’t tie the researcher’s hands. If they have good enough research, we just give them the money, and they communicate with us. If it doesn’t work, they are not handcuffed by us.” Unravel Pediatric Cancer will host its Third Annual 5k Family Fun Run on Sunday, June 3, from 9am to 12pm at Gilroy Sports Park. A former construction worker at Alexander Station Apartments has filed a lawsuit against a contractor, Ward Mechanical LLC claiming unpaid wages that could

involve dozens of current and former construction workers at the affordable housing project on Alexander Street. The contractor, John Ward this week denied allegations of any wrongdoing. Ward, who lives in Sacramento, has been a contractor at Alexander Station for two years. He said this week that he hired employees to work an alternative workweek—four tenhour days.

“The workers voted on an alternative workweek, to work four ten-hour days,” Ward said. “I have always paid my guys. I have already lost $400,000 on this job, which is why I never allow them to work overtime.” “I've been working on wage theft cases for almost 20 years, and this has been one of the most egregious examples of wage theft,” said the worker’s attorney, Tomas Margain said. “You might

A third annual Cinco de Mayo fiesta of sorts for Morgan Hill and Gilroy students with special needs was hosted by teachers from both programs May 4 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. The celebratory event was a bit of a send-off for teacher Justin Barbettini, who is in his second and final year heading up the post-secondary program for adult students with special needs for Morgan Hill Unified School District. He was joined by teacher Mike Luke, who runs the moderate to severe disability program at Gilroy High School. “They have a great group of kids down there in Gilroy,” said Barbettini, who started

his special education career as a paraprofessional/aide in Luke’s classroom. “At that time, I knew I wanted to be a teacher but the kids in that class are the reason I got into special education.” This year, 20 students (nine from Morgan Hill and 11 from Gilroy) gathered for a fun-filled day with some Cinco de Mayo flair, including Mexican trinkets Barbettini bought from La Placita gift shop in Gilroy, BBQ-d carne asada tacos and other holiday fixins. Activities included music, piñatas and a water balloon fight. “It’s the kids that I really have memories with and connections with,” said Barbettini, who is moving to Maine and plans to continue his work in post-secondary special education. “My class has been great. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve made a lot of things happen.” Barbettini works with his students, who range in ages from 18-22 and are transferred in from Live Oak and

Sobrato high schools, to build confidence, feed independence and further life skills. A major objective is to build a relationship with local businesses and organizations through the student’s on-site volunteerism with the hope of acquiring a parttime job. He has worked out partnerships with Rosy’s at the Beach, We Dog Care, GVA Cafe, Goodwill and the City of Morgan Hill. The students get compensated for their hours (up to 10 per month) through the Workability 1 program, which is funded by the State Department of Rehabilitation. They receive a salary of $10.50 per hour for their work. The postsecondary program does not get any additional funding from the school district and uses their paychecks to fund other class activities and excursions. “It’s all about just focusing on the kids and helping them out,” Barbettini said.

CHP charges DUI for school bus accident POLICE REPORT TWO CHILDREN SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES ON THEIR WAY HOME Staff report

Two children were injured after a suspected drunk driver crashed his speeding SUV into a school bus in north Gilroy May 3, according to authorities. About 3:20pm, California Highway Patrol received a call reporting a collision with an ambulance responding on Monterey Road, north of the intersection with Rucker Avenue. Authorities determined a Ford Expedition had been traveling at a high rate of speed north on Monterey Road, according to a press release from CHP. The Ford was allegedly driving more than 90 mph when it lost

control, crossed opposing lanes of vehicle traffic and collided with a parked Gilroy Unified School bus that was preparing to unload students, according to police. The SUV then overturned and came to rest upside down on the west shoulder of Monterey Road, trapping the adult driver and right front passenger inside, police said. Witnesses at the scene helped remove the driver and passenger from the Ford. The driver, Alberto A. Ceadano, 25, of San Martin, was transported to San Jose Regional Hospital for minor to moderate injuries. The 28-year-old female passenger of the Ford suffered minor injuries but declined to be treated by paramedics on the scene. Two minor passengers of the school bus—a 13-year-old girl

and 16-year-old boy— suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision, according to the CHP press release. One of these students complained of shoulder and chest pain, and was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with a parent. The other injured child suffered minor scrapes to his elbow and refused medical care at the scene, with the supervision of a parent. The bus was filled with 43 passengers at the time of the collision. Ceadano was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and a warrant out of the Gilroy Police Department for a previous DUI, according to police. Local restaurants enlist a new delivery service

Hate to cook? Don’t want to drive either? Love to eat? Good news for you, DoorDash, a nationwide restaurant delivery service, is now available in Gilroy and Morgan Hill. With the touch of a button, from DoorDash’s website or by iPhone or Droid apps, a variety of local cuisine, from fast food to finer dining, coffee, juices, and more, quick delivery is but a finger stroke away. Today DoorDash serves more than 650 cities and towns across America, and while ambitious, the company hopes to reach into every possible location where people want food and where food can be delivered. “DoorDash is a technology company that connects customers with their favorite local and national businesses through doorto-door delivery,” said DoorDash spokesperson Nicole Sommers. “We work with local restaurants in the community to bring meals directly to

customers and also partner with 90 percent of the top 100 U.S. restaurants that offer delivery, which is more top national restaurant partnerships than anyone else in the ondemand delivery space.” Like Uber or Lyft drivers, all 200,000 DoorDash delivery drivers, referred to as Dashers, are independent contractors. Payment to drivers is paid based on the cost of the order, the wait time at the restaurant, the distance between the restaurant and the delivery point, traffic, parking, $1, plus all tips they may receive. Before a driver accepts a job, the DoorDash delivery app shows a guaranteed amount of pay. Tipping for customers is optional. “DoorDash offers the best regarding speed, selection and customer service,” Sommers said. “Typical deliveries arrive in under an hour. This goal informs everything we do, from the markets we enter to the interface of our app, to our smart routing system for Dashers that takes into account food prep time, delivery distance and other variables to ensure that food arrives perfectly presented.” DoorDash is a San Francisco-based company founded by Tony Xu in 2013.

“Tony watched his mom work at her restaurant, where helped her from ages 9 to 15 and wanted to help small business owners like his mom grow and scale their business,” Sommers said in an email. In Gilroy, DoorDash delivers for local restaurants, including Ninja Sushi, Dany’s Restaurant, Ginger Cafe, Sweet Sicily, BBQ 152, Los Pericos Taqueria, First Street Coffee House, La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, Cafe Thyme, Westside Grill and Mama Mia’s. Stunning artwork from Christopher High School students is on display at a number of downtown Gilroy business and will remain through next week as part of a partnership between the school’s art department and business owners. Green Glaze Pottery Studio, 7477 Monterey Road, Leedo Art & Framing, 7436 Monterey Road, and Bella Viva Ristorante, 7423 Monterey Road, showcased artwork from more than 100 CHS students for their inaugural spring art show. “The goal for the department this year was to do community outreach and partner with downtown businesses, and we feel that we accomplished that,” said Amanda Woodward, Christopher’s Visual Arts and Performing Arts Department Chair. “We have no gallery space on campus so

we’re always looking, and the stores have all given up space to display our artwork.” Woodward, who is the high school’s ceramics teacher, credited colleague Frederico Saldana, the drawing and painting teacher, with networking with downtown businesses to make this possible. “The works accumulated for the show demonstrate the hard work and creativity of our students at Christopher High,” said Saldana, a Gilroy native. “Throughout the year, students have worked with a range of mediums. The works in the show are exemplary representations of what students achieved with those mediums.” From surreal projects to pencil drawings to acrylic paintings to bird houses to wheel projects to mixed media pieces, the students voted on which artwork they wanted to publicly display that “best reflects them,” Saldana explained. “The work is pretty phenomenal for the high school level,” said Woodward, who hopes to turn this showcase

into an annual event and expand the number of downtown venues. “Now that the downtown movement is coming back a little bit, there are a lot of businesses looking for partnerships and we’re looking for space. It’s a win-win.” The art show opened up last week with student artists rotating shifts so they can provide commentary about their work to those customers interested at the three downtown locations. “Some pieces reflect fears and concerns that students face daily or are influenced by what they see happening in politics, both nationally and internationally,” Saldana said. “I am amazed and continue to be so by the quality and dedication these students give to their craft.” “I have enjoyed watching the students develop their work. Sometimes, it seems effortless and the results come quick. Other times, I have witnessed students struggle with ideas and techniques to the point of frustration, yet they never give up,” Saldana said. “I am very proud of the work we have assembled here for this show.”

Mosque project too big for San Martin

he Morgan Hill Times article dated April 26, 2018 (“Moque project to face public review by summer”) is one-sided. The quote from the mother of the bullied student, who admits that the problem had been resolved a year ago, just instilled more negativity and caused dystopia. Throughout history there is documented ill will. Concerning the Cordoba project (Mosque) in San Martin, not all who make threatening comments are from the “Muslims Go Home” side. I too have felt threatened by comments voiced to me. Was it because I am from San Martin? Was I singled out because I am a woman? Regardless, it was unacceptable, and caused angst. But I am tired of the fear mongering and accusations against the residents of San Martin, from people who don't have a clear understanding about this unincorporated village. People are so quick to judge, cast the first stone and accuse others of being anti-Muslim or xenophobic. However, there were no cries of racism, or anti-Baptist slurs when the county denied the application (for the same parcel) years prior to the Cordoba project application. The county denied it based on zoning. The county has since updated its zoning code, and there are many facts to be considered from all sides of the spectrum. The comment that "County planners have told the residents that the county cannot legally reject a project based on the religion of those who proposed it" is very condescending and offensive. San Martin residents are not ignorant, and have stood firm on the fact that “Size Matters” in San Martin. The following are just a few serious concerns related to the Cordoba project: 1. This project defies the Santa Clara County San Martin Integrated Design Plan (SMIDP);

2. It is in very close proximity to Llagas Creek; 3. There have been years of poor percolation testing, and the parcel floods southwest to Harding Avenue; 4. The existing curve of Monterey Road, may necessitate the need for turning lanes and possible traffic signals; 5. San Martin does not have the community resources that a city has—most residents are entirely dependent upon private wells for potable water (drinking and bathing), and according to the World Health Organization guidelines, entirely too close for a proposed cemetery; 6. There would be excessive lighting at night, which would affect wildlife. There was a reason the county established the SMIDP for San Martin. Yet our voices to protect this unique rural community have fallen on deaf ears. Thanks to San Martin Neighborhood Alliance, there is finally dialogue with the county and San Martin has gained some respect. A South County traffic study is just underway, but will take a couple years to complete, so it is unknown how traffic will be impacted with a development of this magnitude. The article quotes plans "designed to accommodate up to'300 people at a time,” but claims there are presently 400 members of the South Valley Islamic Community who proposed the Cordoba project. In 2006-07, I had a discussion with county planning about the Cordoba Center application. I was told the application on file was for a 25,000-square-foot development, and it was denied because of the size. I believe Size Matters in San Martin. Illustrations of the proposed Cordoba project, although lovely, show a facility that is much larger than any existing religious institutions in San Martin.

Vote ‘No’ on Persky recall On the June 5 ballot, Santa Clara County voters will be asked whether or not to recall Judge Aaron Persky, the judge who sentenced former Stanford student Brock Turner for sexual assault. I urge all voters to vote NO to the recall and here is why. Let me be clear, rape, sexual assault, domestic violence and similar offenses are wrong, illegal, and those who commit these offenses should be held accountable. The issue is whether Judge Persky acted in a way that deserves a recall. The sentence was lawful and followed the recommendation of the probation officer. Get the facts at norecall2018.org. Honesty. Integrity. Transparency. None of these words appeared in this newspaper’s May 3 editorial. In their place, Laurie Smith is referenced fourteen times. No other phrase appears more often, not even close. Nowhere in the editorial did this newspaper mention John Hirokawa’s nearly four decades of distinguished law enforcement experience serving and protecting the people of South County. No mention was made of Hirokawa's universal support from law enforcement groups, including the Deputy Sheriff ’s Association of Santa Clara County, the Peace Officers Research Association of California, Gilroy Police Officers’ Association, and over 80 career law enforcement individuals and organizations. That should tell you everything you need to know when this newspaper mentions John Hirokawa’s readiness. This newspaper just can’t see the safety of South County residents for all it’s Laurie Smith’s. Fortunately, South County voters read past this propaganda. In the 2014 election, I was honored to receive the support of a majority of South County voters despite similar efforts to distort the truth. The truth is that Smith has fought reforms every step of the way. As of April 2018, she paid an out-of-state consultant nearly $75,000 of taxpayer funds for a biased report that undermined independent oversight of the county jails. I ask South County to join the chorus of law enforcement and community members supporting John Hirokawa for a safer Santa Clara County. This group includes myself, retired Sheriff Bob Winter,and retired Judge Ladoris Cordell. Cordell advocated for a change in leadership alongside the Blue Ribbon Commission in response to the 2015 murder of a mentally disabled inmate. Vote for John Hirokawa for Sheriff to restore honesty, integrity, and transparency to our county’s top law enforcement job.

Smithee reported his white Ford F250 stolen from the Modesto Junior College parking lot just after 8pm, according to Modesto Police Sgt. Jamie Demmings. Inside the vehicle were not only Smithee’s service weapon, but also his Gilroy police badge, city-issued laptop computer, his personal iPad and other personal items. Police arrested Louis Grubeck, Jr., 36, of Modesto, on suspicion of stealing Smithee’s vehicle two days later, but the handgun, badge, laptop and other items have not been recovered, Demmings said. The arrest was made when officers from the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Taskforce located Smithee’s truck parked in a commercial lot. “While they were observing it, they saw a suspect get into the truck, and made an arrest and recovered the stolen truck,” Demmings said. Grubeck was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of auto theft. Demmings noted that it is “impossible to determine how many people were in and out of that truck” between the time it was stolen to when it was recovered. Thus investigators do not yet know if Grubeck stole the vehicle from the MJC parking lot and then acquired it from someone else, or if he ever had possession of the gun and other items that were inside Smithee’s vehicle. Smithee described his thoughts and actions in the hours before his vehicle was stolen. He

California law states that anyone who leaves a loaded handgun in a vehicle unattended must “lock the handgun in the vehicle’s trunk…in a locked container and place the container out of plain view, or lock the handgun in a locked container that is permanently affixed to the vehicle’s interior and not in plain view.” If these options are not available, a peace officer may “lock the handgun out of plain view within the center utility console of that motor vehicle with a padlock, keylock, combination lock or other similar locking device,” according to the code section titled “Criminal Storage of Firearm.” Smithee said Gilroy Police Departmentpolicy has the same wording. But the chief did not secure his handgun according to the provisions of the law and the policy because his vehicle does not have a trunk, and he does not have any other container in the truck in which to lock items up. A violation of the state law is punishable by a fine up to $1,000, according to the code section. The chief gave Modesto police the same description of how he left his handgun and badge in the vehicle. But Demmings noted, “It’s impossible to secure your firearm when the vehicle itself is stolen. As he approached the college in his vehicle, Smithee strategically parked in a spot in the parking lot that was “right next to the street, near a crosswalk—what I thought was the perfect place.” He exited the vehicle, still wearing his badge and service weapon, and looked across to the entrance to the graduation. He saw a long line with security staff checking attendees, and wondered to himself if they would let him, a sworn police officer, into the venue with his handgun. Smithee figured if he approached the venue wearing his handgun, but was denied entry, everyone in proximity would know he had a handgun and would be able to see him return to his vehicle and place his weapon inside. Thus, Smithee decided to leave his handgun and badge behind in the vehicle before getting in line. He said he removed other items from his center console next to the driver’s seat of his truck and placed the handgun and badge in the bottom of the console. He then put the other things on top of the gun and badge so that nobody could see them from outside his truck. Smithee locked the truck, attended the graduation ceremony, and returned to the parking lot to see his

The vision is quite clear for the American Cancer Society, which wants to double its contributions in 2018 to better support cancer research and services to those stricken with the life-altering disease. To do so, the nonprofit organization has been instituting some changes to reduce costs in other areas, including trimming

staff, to allow for funds raised to flow into their main objective of finding a cure. “Nationwide, we have a pretty ambitious goal to double the amount of money that goes to research,” said Julie Shaver, Executive Director of Community Engagement, noting that ACS is “the largest funder of cancer research in the world outside of the U.S. government.” Locally, Gilroy and Morgan Hill, which had organized separate Relay events, have merged, under the direction of ACS, to form the Relay For Life of South County. The

24-hour walkathon, which is ACS’s largest annual fundraiser with communities partaking in Relays throughout country, will begin 10am May 19 and run until 10am May 20 at Morgan Hill Community Park, located at 171 W. Edmundson Ave. The continuous overnight event calls for at least one member of a team to be walking the circuit at all times. “ACS is still committed to finding a cure for cancer. In order to do that, we realize the amount of dollars going toward research would have to double,” said Dawn Ullmark, Volunteer Area Relay For Life Co-Lead and Volunteer Board Member

“For us to be able to get the word out that these services are available is really important,” Shaver said. “Every amount of research that the U.S. government has invested in has been decreasing. That is why ACS is taking this bold goal in doubling the amount of research we are funding.” In helping to get the word out, ACS has established an advocacy arm called The Cancer Action Network, which “does a lot of work at the federal level to ensure funding research remains a top priority of our government.”

Laundry opens new service center GILROY SITE EXPECTS TO ADD 150 NEW JOBS IN 2018 Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

Crothall Healthcare, the laundry and linen division of The Compass Group, has opened a hospital laundry and linen service center in Gilroy and is looking for more employees to wash up to 20 million pounds of linens a year. Crothall provides linen services for Kaiser and Stanford Hospitals, washing sheets, drapes, nurses scrubs and doctors coats. Its parent Compass Group is the fifth largest employer in the world with 550,000 employees in 50 countries. With 50 employees working in production at the GIlroy location, 8190 Murray Ave., in engineering, delivery and office jobs, Crothall in a year expects Gilroy to be the company’s second-largest laundry facility, of 48 total across the U.S. May 2 marked the facility’s official first day of operations, following six months of preparatory work. Under the encouraging eyes of Crothall Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Michael Barner and company Vice-President Jaime Brockamp, employees

worked washing and folding more than 20,000 pounds of hospital linen in the 120,000 square foot facility at 8190 Murray Avenue. With 12 loading docks and continued growth in Bay Area, they expect to get busier. “We had built a facility in Manteca, but we got so much business that we needed another facility in this area,” Barnett said. “This building was sitting empty, and thanks to our former General Manager Jason Armagost, we brought in new equipment, put on a new roof, and we refurbished everything.” “Our ideal candidate is someone who does not have laundry experience because they are trainable and they can learn how we do things,” Barnett said. “It takes a couple of days to learn how to work the machines.” When someone goes to the hospital, one of the last things that may be on their mind is the sheets on the bed, the drapes on the window, or the uniforms worn by their nurses or doctors, Barnett said. “We want to make sure that everything that leaves this place is pristine, sterile and ready for a hospital environment,” he said. Crothall is hiring for multiple positions, but Barnett said it is especially scrambling for qualified mechanics who have boiler and hydraulic experience.

Draft Negative Declaration for Uvas Creek Levee Rehabilitation Project What: The proposed Uvas Creek Levee Rehabilitation Project (Project) would reconstruct an approximate 4,550-foot portion of the existing levee along the eastern bank of Uvas Creek on District and City-owned parcels in the City of Gilroy. This project is part of the District’s commitment to reduce the risk of flooding and keeping our communities safe. Rebuilding the levee would consist of placing suitable excavated and imported material in compacted layers until as-built grades are achieved. Erosion control matting would be embedded within the rebuilt levee slope. Soil nails, staples, or earth percussion anchors would be used to secure the erosion control matting. In addition, the District proposes to repair any damage to the existing recreational trail atop the levee from construction equipment and hydroseed the rebuilt levee surface with a native grass seed mix. Why: Pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, the Santa Clara Valley Water District, as the lead agency for the Project, has prepared a Draft Negative Declaration (ND) to evaluate environmental impacts of the proposed Project. The Draft ND did not identify potentially significant environmental impacts on the environment. Impacts associated with the proposed Project were determined to be less than significant. Public Review: The Draft ND will be available for public review from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Santa Clara Valley Water District Headquarters Building (5700 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA 95118) for 30-days starting May 9, 2018. A copy of the Draft ND will also be available at the Gilroy Library reference desk at 350 West 6th Street in Gilroy, CA 95020. On May 4, Juan Quinterosicarios, 35, was arrested for being in possession of 15 pounds of methamphetamine in his vehicle, in the area of Tenth and Chestnut streets, police said. Officers also served a search warrant on Quinterosicarios’ home in Monterey County. “The City of Gilroy has long been known as a

destination city for narcotic traffickers due to its centralized location which is linked by major highways,” the Facebook post reads. The investigation into the suspected drug trafficker was initiated by the Gilroy Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team. It was a joint operation, also involving the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team, United Narcotics Enforcement Team, Drug Enforcement Administration, Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team and the California Highway Patrol.

Marcela Mantilla couldn’t stop hopping up and down. The Gilroy High sophomore had just won the 100-meter hurdles race in a personal-record (PR) 15.87 seconds in last Friday’s Monterey Bay League Pacific Division Championships, so one couldn’t blame Mantilla for being in such an excited state that it looked as if she was on a pogo stick. “After I finished and caught my breath, I saw my friend’s face and her eyes lit up,” said Mantilla, whose had never gone sub 16 seconds before Friday’s race. “I knew by her reaction I had hit a PR.” Mantilla, whose time now ranks 10th best in the Central Coast Section this season, said the key was being strong mentally. “Tonight I had to block everything out,” she said. “I just thought about my race and didn’t think about times, because that usually throws me off. Blocking everything out gives me inner peace. This time I just had to focus on one thing, and I thought about my arms and having fun when I crossed the finish line.” Mantilla has come a long way in a short time. Mantilla had never hurdled until last year, and like most athletes doing a technical track and field event for the first year, she had no idea what she was doing. “Coming out this year coach had me focusing on specific technique,” she said. “I’m taking in the corrections because last year I kind of understood the corrections, but it went over my head. As I’ve taken in the corrections this season, I’ve applied them on the track and it’s been

great.” For Jessica Bright, the MBL Finals were downright dazzling. The Christopher High sophomore took second in the 100meter dash and first in the 300 hurdles in a PR of 49.81, just ahead of Mantilla, who took second in 50.21. Bright got off to a great start in the 300 hurdles but ran into trouble when she landed awkwardly coming off the fourth hurdle. “My right leg turned to the side, and I had a previous injury on that side,” she said. “It put me down a bit, but I kept pushing through it.” Bright had lost her rhythm and was struggling to the finish, and it looked as if a hard-charging Mantilla was going to catch her at the line. However, Bright dug deep and was resilient to the finish. “I was trying to get it done and have that special moment,” she said. “I heard Marcella’s steps, and I also heard her parents cheering, too, so it was kind of funny. I was just thinking I had to represent the city of Gilroy and I’m going to be first. I was over there praying saying, ‘God, help me do this, I believe in you and I can get it done.’” Even though Bright didn’t PR in the hurdles, she did nail a PR in the 100 in 12.89. She credited her father, Dennis, for giving her some great advice before the race. “He told me to come out of my drive phase, keep my chin up and focus on getting down to the finish line,” she said. Speaking of finishing, Logan Flores knows how to do just that. The Gilroy High senior won the pole vault—as expected—but also took first in the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.77 and 43.14 seconds, respectively. Flores’ versatility borders on the unbelievable, as he has also competed in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter dash this season. Flores hit a PR in the 110 and produced his second fastest time in the 300 despite slowing up in the final 15 meters because he

In other words, Flores has flourished in a variety of disciplines that few athletes— if any in the CCS—can match. Flores’ 13-6 in the pole vault was rather pedestrian by his standards; however, Flores didn’t need to hit a big number, knowing he still has the Masters Meet and CCS Trials upcoming. “I just want to stay consistent,” he said. “I’m pretty satisfied with how the hurdles went. I’d like my times to be lower, but I’ll take what I can get.” Flores, who has the section’s best mark at 16-1 1/2 in the pole vault—which was established at the CCS Top 8 Meet on April 21—has a goal to hit 16 feet, 4 inches—equal to 5 meters—in the CCS Finals. “I can’t wait until the situation comes and they raise up the bar that high again,” he said. Flores was eager to relay the story of when he cleared 16-1 ½

at the Top 8 Classic at Los Gatos High. The all-day meet happened to be on the same day of prom night, so there was obviously a sense of urgency during the meet. “I knew I had to go in there and execute,” Flores said. “My mom planned a lot of stuff for prom, and I came in feeling pretty good.” Flores cleared 15-3, 15-7 and then put the bar at 16 1-½ because he had checked the state rankings and a couple of athletes were just under that mark. Once Flores cleared that mark, his dad told him it was time to go. “I said, ‘One more’ because coach said I could clear 5 meters,” Flores said. “I barely missed it due to standards, and then it was time for me to take off.” Flores is having a tremendous season, as is Christopher super sophomore Keola Sylva, who won the long jump and the triple jump, his signature event. Sylva, who has a PR of 46 feet in

the triple jump—good for second in the section—went 44-4. It wasn’t Sylva’s best result; however, Sylva has been far and away the most consistent triple jumper in the CCS this season. Sylva nailed a huge PR in the long jump, going 21-2-½ to better his previous best by a foot. Sylva even managed to do a third event, the pole vault, and his mark of 11 feet established another PR. “I’m really happy and felt good for what I did in the pole vault and long jump,” he said. “I did just OK in the triple, and I know I’ve just got to get ready for the MBL Masters.” Despite having the No. 2 mark in the CCS, Sylva carried the top mark for most of the season. Gavilan’s coach, athletes pull double

Kramer deserves a lot of credit, as he took the position having never coached softball before. But he surrounded himself with experienced and knowledgeable softball coaches, and pretty much left the Xs and Os stuff to them. Kramer, meanwhile, took care of the overall management of the program—paperwork, travel arrangements, facility maintenance and all of the little things that need to be taken care of behind the scenes—making for a nice combination. “When we decided to make this happen, I told the AD (Athletic Director Ron Hannon) the only way we were going to get it done is if we found some really good softball assistant coaches. We did, and they were awesome.” Kramer was referring to softball assistant coaches Paige Miguel, Bobby Reggiani and Mari Rodriguez. Kramer also credited his assistant coaches on the beach volleyball team—Chris Spence, Ramon Rodriguez and Isaiah Acfalle—for being instrumental to the program’s success. Taking the challenge

It was double duty for two Gavilan college athletes and one coach during the spring sports season. Kevin Kramer coached the Rams softball team and beach volleyball squad, and Lexi Chavarria and Kaitlyn Siaz played both sports. Safe to say, the last couple of months have been extremely busy for the trio. “It’s been hard on my body, but I feel like I’m handling it pretty well,” said Chavarria, a 2016 San Benito High graduate. “I definitely wouldn’t have succeeded if it wasn’t for Kevin because he really works with me and is flexible with the times I can come to practice. He also understands if I’m feeling sore one day, it’s OK to take a day off. Otherwise, my body probably wouldn’t have been able to get through an entire season.” It was a successful season for Gavilan’s beach volleyball and softball teams for a variety of reasons. The beach volleyball team recently concluded its season, but the two-woman tournament is ongoing. The Rams’ No. 1 team of Mikeila Banda and Haley Leifheit (San Benito) and No. 3 squad of Katia Dizon (Anzar) and Emily Jensen (formerly Kortsen, a former San Benito standout) advanced to the California Community College State Tournament on Friday.

was able to juggle coaching two teams in the same season, almost unheard of at any level, especially in community college. But extenuating circumstances—the possibility of the softball program folding—required extraordinary measures. Simply put, Kramer did not want any of the student-athletes who came to Gavilan to play softball have something taken away through no fault of their own. “The biggest motivation in doing this was knowing the ladies on campus who came to Gavilan to play softball,” he said. “For us to not give them an opportunity would be heartbreaking. Softball is amazing in our area, and Gavilan once again needs to be a destination for the players who want to go the JC route. And I see no reason why it can’t be done. That was the motivation for me to come back.” Kramer did something few others in his position would’ve done three weeks ago—turn down a position to be an athletic director. But that’s exactly what happened when Kramer was offered the Mission College athletic director position. Kramer has always said he loves being immersed at Gavilan College, and he has gone above and beyond in showing it. The longtime indoor volleyball coach, Kramer said he loves the student-athletes at Gavilan and helping them reach their goals.

The softball team recorded only five wins, but the most important victory was Gavilan fielding a team at all after the program was in danger of folding in the off-season after it couldn’t get a coach for several months following the 2017 season. Kramer, fellow coaches and the Gavilan athletics administration refused to let that happen.
