Students send gifts to GIs abroad GILROY SENDS 20 BOXES AND LETTERS EACH MONTH TO SOLDIERS OVERSEAS By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Jaqueline McCool
Every month has a Veterans Day for soldiers stationed overseas, thanks to the generosity of volunteers for a national non-profit and students from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister. Volunteers with Operation Interdependence prepare care packages that include cards, snacks, toiletries, candy and handwritten letters from kids, which are sent to GIs every month. The organization reports that 200-250 large boxes containing the care packages are shipped overseas to combat zones and military bases. Gilroy volunteer Susan
Mister said, “Gilroy has been able to ship 20 boxes monthly, with 25 quart-size bags in each box.” The small team of volunteers meets every week for packaging and letter writing, she said. Gilroy has been the second-biggest contributor to the organization for the past five year, led by students at Christopher High School. The students collect products for the packages and have written more than 1,000 letter, Mister said. Gilroy real estate manager Mark Sanchez provides office space every week for about a dozen volunteers for the project, she said. St. Catherine’s School in Morgan Hill has provided letters, and the Hollister 4-H has donated products and money. The Memorial Day car show at Christmas Hill Park is a local fundraiser as well. Mister said that while the group does not know

the details of the soldiers who receive the packages, “a lot of our boxes have gone to Kandahar in Afghanistan.” “Each of our letters is handwritten and speaks to gratefulness for their service
and sacrifice and talks about things happening here at home,” said Mister. “The students will write about sports, music, art, their siblings, girlfriends, boyfriends—it's all uplifting.”
“Thank you all so much for the caring words, the cards and the gifts you all sent in the packages,” said Karon Carley, president of Operation Interdependence. “Each
card is read by a sailor, soldier, marine or airman. I can speak for them when I say that your words of encouragement bolster our spirit as we complete our daily missions.”
the second phase, Caltrans will repave all of First Street, from Santa Teresa to US-101. Anthony Fanucchi, construction inspector with 4LEAF, Inc., said his crew has laid about 3,000 feet of pipe so far. As the work continues, Fanucchi has been working with businesses along First Street to ensure the construction doesn’t negatively impact them. “Whatever you need, we’ll make it happen for you,” Fanucchi told business owners.
Lately, he has been coordinating with Saint Mary’s cemetery to ensure there’s access to burial services. As the construction approached the intersection at Wren Avenue, another alert was sent out by community engagement coordinator Rachelle Bladell. Bladell has been sending out updates on the project via email, Nextdoor postings, social media and the city’s website. The construction team and city officials meet weekly to
assess where the project is headed and discuss any complications. Fanucchi said the team did run into an unmarked water line as workers dug to place the new 24-inch pipe. The project is replacing a 100-year-old water pipeline that connects to the city’s homes and businesses. The new line will be connected to the existing lines after the entire pipe is laid and pressure tested. This part of the process
is when residents will encounter some interruption in water service. The next phase water shutoffs should occur in February and March 2019. The city is working to be able to conduct this more disruptive work at night, in an effort to mitigate the effects any shutoffs may have on businesses. This plan hinges on agreement from Caltrans, because the street is designated as an arterial and is therefore under Caltrans jurisdiction.

THE SECOND PHASE OF THE WATER MAIN PROJECT IS UNDERWAY By Jaqueline McCool Reporter
At 7:30am workers and machinery begin to gather in the middle of First Street, and by 8am the saw is tearing into the pavement and a detour is set up, diverting rush-hour traffic.
This is the new normal for the second phase of the First Street Improvement Project, and will continue for about two months. The team of construction workers from Monterey Peninsula Engineering have been busy laying the 8,000 feet of new water lines in the ground while the city has been working on public outreach. Despite minor setbacks, city officials say the second phase is on schedule to be completed by summer 2019. Following the completion of

The Mount Madonna Park Master Plan approved by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 2017 is being revised to accommodate new park forest property and reduce overall fire hazards. The County Parks Department recently acquired additional property adjacent to the areas of the 4,605-acre park that are currently open to the public. The county said this month that there is interest in opening these new areas to park users, and released a 196page draft plan for protecting the forests. The park, located off Hecker Pass Road, comprises primarily redwood forest and sits atop the Santa Cruz Mountain range. It is a popular destination for camping, hiking, horseback riding, archery and picnicking. The plan attempts to address growing concern about wildfire dangers in the park, report county officials. In more recent years, Mt. Madonna Park has been subject to forest
outbreaks of tree diseases and falling trees in both high-use recreational areas and low-use backcountry areas. These events have resulted in large-scale tree removal in high-use portions of the park. Park forests are also faced with additional threats that increase tree stress, including pest and disease infestations, invasive species establishment and wildfires. The plan recommends: Creation of “fuel breaks” around park structures, along paved park access roads, and along key roadways where the creation of fuel breaks compartmentalize fuels and contribute to regional wildfire prevention efforts. Removal of invasive species, especially blue gum, which reduces biological diversity by displacing and suppressing native tree growth and contributes to increased fire hazard due to its physical characteristics (e.g., peeling bark, volatile organic compounds, high fuel loading). The removal plan includes some use of herbicides. Removal of eucalyptus trees within the three identified large stands. Proactive treatment of infestations of insects and pathogens, which remain a threat to the park’s forests.
Selective thinning of selected stands of second-growth redwoods, allowing for a reduction in the number of trees per acre while promoting the growth of retained trees and their canopy. Reintroduction of prescribed fires into the park. Prescribed fire is considered a highly effective and inexpensive tool for reducing fuel loads and treating residual woody material generated during forest treatments. When used to reduce fuel loads or treat woody material, prescribed fire can help reduce the potential for catastrophic wildland fires. Other benefits of prescribed fire include accelerated nutrient cycling, reduction of brood material for pests and pathogens, reduced competition from underbrush, and reduced risk of pathogen spread via material transport. The county is seeking public comment on the plan. The comment period on the draft documents will be open until Nov. 19. For more information, visit the County Parks website:. https://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/ PlansProjects/introduction/Pages/plans-projects-introduction.aspx

OPINION GUEST VIEW BY SEN. BILL MONNING
‘No-Straw’ November
OPINION PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, OCT.8, 1954
Veterans Day Proclamation
W
hereas, it has long been our custom to commemorate Nov. 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by rededicating ourselves to the cause of peace; and Whereas, in the intervening years the United States has been involved in two other great military conflicts, which have added millions of veterans living and dead to the honor rolls of this Nation; and Whereas, the Congress passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926 calling for the observance of Nov. 11 with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938 that the 11th of November should be a legal holiday and should known as Armistice Day and Whereas, in order to expand the significance of that commemoration and in order that a grateful nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this nation, the Congress, by an act approved June 1, 1954, changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day; Now, therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, Nov. 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. On that day, let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain. I also direct
the appropriate officials of the government to arrange for the display of the flag of the United States all public buildings on Veterans Day. In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose… Signed, Oct. 8, 1954. Armistice Day, 1926 and 1938
Whereas, the 11th of November 1918 marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary and far-reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas, the legislatures of 27 of our states have already declared Nov. 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Nov. 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples… . On May 13, 1938, Congress made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be known as Armistice Day.

Plastic pollution poses a growing threat to our oceans, coastlines and waterways. To raise awareness about this issue, I authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 139, which proclaims the month of November as “No Straw November” in the state of California. Shelby O’Neil, Jr Ocean Guardian founder, created the No Straw November initiative for her 2017 Girl Scouts of America Gold Award Project. The initiative includes a pledge to refuse single-use plastic straws during the entire month and to keep a tally of how many straws you eliminated from potentially ending up in the ocean. In the United States,an average of 200 pounds per person of plastic waste is created each year. From the time plastic production took off in the 1950s until now, more than eight billion tons of plastic have been produced; of that amount, 6.3 billion tons has been discarded, and of that amount, only 9 percent has been recycled. The equivalent of a full dump truck of plastic enters global oceans every minute. Plastic does not biodegrade. While it may break down into smaller pieces over time, it never goes away. Scientists are finding plastic all over the ocean, from polar ice caps to gyres to the stomachs of marine life. An estimated 700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or become entangled in plastic. Many companies and cities have joined in the effort to reduce the usage of not only singleuse plastic straws but other single use plastics as well. Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, Disney and Hyatt Hotel are a few of the large corporations that have made commitments to reduce their plastic footprint, and the cities of San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, and Carmel have instituted “straws upon request” policies or bans. There are many ways you can help to reduce plastic pollution. Pass up drinks in single-use plastic bottles and avoid other singleuse plastics when possible. Recycle, shop with reusable bags, and try to purchase products with non-plastic packaging. Support restaurants that offer biodegradable takeout containers and utensils, and join me as we pledge to take part in a “No Straw November.” Together, we can reduce plastic pollution and protect California’s beautiful oceans, coastlines and waterways.

SV Clean Energy signs new solar contracts AGREEMENT ONRENEWABLE ENERGY HELPS MONTEREY BAY COMMUNITY POWER AGENCY Staff Report
Barry Holtzclaw
Silicon Valley Clean Energy has signed two long-term agreements for the largest utility-scale, solar-plus-storage projects to be built in California, for community power agencies serving Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. The two projects will provide 153 megawatts (MW) of solar and 47 MW of storage and will be developed by EDF Renewables North America and Recurrent Energy Development Holdings, LLC. These projects are due to come online in 2021 and harness enough energy to power 39,000 homes annually. Building storage in addition to solar turns the sun’s energy into a resource that can be used on demand, rather
than only when the sun is shining. These projects will combine solar panels with large batteries to store energy that the sun produces during the day so that more clean energy can be discharged onto the grid during times of high energy usage in the evening. “We are excited to help California lead the transition to clean, reliable and flexible energy,” said Girish Balachandran, CEO of Silicon Valley Clean Energy. “These new renewable energy projects are a significant investment toward reaching our state’s carbon-free energy goals and contribute to solving the state’s grid integration problem by investing in large gridscale energy storage.” The contracts are the result of a competitive bidding process that began in September 2017. The collaboration of SVCE, which serves Santa Clara County, with its neighboring Community Choice Energy agency, Monterey Bay Community Power, which serves San Benito
CLEANER ENERGY These power lines that stretch across farmland will be supplied by more renewable sources in the future. County, took advantage of economies of scale for the combined four counties, allowing for more purchasing power to invest in these long-term agreements. The two agencies issued a joint RFO
that received more than 80 offers for new projects that were in various stages of development. One project, developed by Recurrent, will be built in Kings County and will provide 150
megawatts (MW) of solar capacity, plus 45 MW of storage, for 15 years. The solar project, developed by EDF, will be built in Kern County, providing 128 MW of solar capacity and 40 MW of storage
under a 20-year agreement. These projects will support approximately 840 jobs during construction. SVCE will receive 55 percent of the output, and MBCP will receive 45 percent.

Garlic Fest gives $255k to non-profits SCHOOLS ARE BIG WINNERS AT THE 2018 FESTIVAL By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
The Gilroy Garlic Festival Foundation had a spicy year, raising $255,000 for 170 local schools, charities and other non-profits. In the festival’s 40-year history, more than $11.7 million has been raised for local non-profits. In 1979, the founders of the Gilroy Garlic Festival created the Volunteer Equity Program to help convert volunteer hours into monetary donations for charity. This year more than 4,000 volunteers came together to make the 40th Garlic Festival another success. “The reason the Gilroy Garlic Festival is still going strong after 40 years is because of the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers,” 2018 Gilroy
Garlic Festival president Todd Trekell said. “It’s very rewarding to see their hard work translate directly into much-needed funding for many of our community’s most valued organizations.” For 2018, the top five beneficiaries are Live Oak Emerald Regime, $11,788; Gilroy High School Football, $8,601; Victory Outreach, $8,580; Christopher High School CAT Boosters, $7,474; and Gilroy Gators Swim Team, $7,346. More than $90,000 was raised by volunteers working on behalf of Gilroy Unified School District groups and organizations. PROTECTING NEIGHBORHOODS FROM THE THREAT OF WILDFIRES
With new wildfires threatening our local communities, PG&E is partnering with our customers in high fire-threat areas to accelerate and expand our vegetation management work. We will be examining and addressing critical vegetation across 7,100 miles of power lines.
In order to keep our neighborhoods safe, PG&E may need to trim or remove vegetation on or near properties in high firethreat areas. PG&E’s action plan includes the following steps: ■ Step 1: Our safety inspectors will be in your neighborhood to determine what vegetation may need to be trimmed or removed. ■ Step 2: If needed, we will mark trees that need to be addressed and contact you to discuss the results of the safety inspection. ■ Step 3: We will perform safety work shortly after the inspection. ■ Step 4: We will plan to begin wood debris removal within a few weeks after completion of the safety work (unless you would like to keep it).
KEEPING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFE
You can help keep your family and neighbors safe by maintaining defensible space around your home and property. We recommend you regularly trim bushes and trees, remove any dry or dead vegetation and be sure to leave space between trees and plants.
Now, and in the years ahead, we must all work together to be better prepared for wildfires.
To learn if you live in a high fire-threat area and what you can do to keep your community safe, please visit pge.com/wildfiresafety.

The 2018 wildfire season is already one of the worst on record — with more than 1.5 million acres burned and more than 1,000 homes lost. And it’s not over yet. With the wildfire risk increasing at an alarming pace, the 2018 wildfire activity is on track to exceed the 2017 wildfire season, which was the most destructive on record.

Visit Gilroy/Gilroy Welcome Center Submitted by Jane Howard, Executive Director Going to Gilroy? Follow the “Road to Garlic” Visit Gilroy has recently launched a new campaign to bring visitors to Gilroy year-round titled “Road to Garlic”. This campaign brings to reality one of the action items identified to complete by the Visit Gilroy board of directors during the board’s annual strategic planning session earlier this year. Visitors who want to savor all that the Garlic Capital of the World has to offer now have an easy way to find great garlic experiences in Gilroy. With new “Road to Garlic” maps in hand, tourists (as well as local residents) can go on a tasty treasure hunt and find all the best places to enjoy the town’s signature spice. Garlic lovers will discover nearly 40 different shops, restaurants, and other attractions with window decals proclaiming their status as stops along the “Road to Garlic.” During their garlic pilgrimage, visitors can find garlic in every form imaginable at iconic stops like Garlic World, Garlic Shoppe, dine on favorite Gilroy Garlic Festival dishes at Mama Mia’s Ristorante Italiano, or take a spin on the Garlic Twirl ride at
Gilroy Gardens. They can also find Instagram-ready photo spots at the garlic mural in Downtown Gilroy and bins of fresh garlic bulbs at LJB Farms. And of course, no trip to Gilroy would be complete without a taste of garlic ice cream—which can now be enjoyed year-round at six different locations throughout Gilroy. The Gilroy Garlic Festival, held every year in late July, is what really put Gilroy on the map— and our community is immensely proud to be known as the world’s go-to garlic destination. Throughout the year, we get many visitors who come to the Gilroy Welcome Center who always want to know the best places to get garlic. Now, with our new ‘Road to Garlic’ maps, it’s easy and fun to enjoy a great Gilroy garlic getaway any time of year! The new “Road to Garlic” maps are sponsored by Christopher Ranch and are available at the Gilroy Welcome Center (located in Gilroy Premium Outlets Building A, near Forever 21).

The President guides the annual poster process for these collector’s items that celebrate each year of the California Rodeo Salinas. The new poster features long time California Rodeo Salinas bullfighter and now barrel-man Andy Burelle tipping his hat in a welcoming gesture. Solid season FIELD HOCKEY

FOCUSED Cami Rogers, a Gilroy High senior, prepares for the team’s opening-round Central Coast Section playoff tournament match against
Willow Glen. Gilroy won the match, 2-1, before dropping a 3-1 decision to St. Ignatius in the quarterfinals. Gilroy finished the season at 17-3.
MUSTANGS COMPLETE ANOTHER TERRIFIC SEASON emanuel lee Sports Editor
Chris Mora
It was déjà vu for the Gilroy High field hockey team in its opening match of the Central Coast Section playoffs. Matched up against Willow Glen—the Mustangs defeated the Rams in the very first match of the season—Gilroy once again found itself down a goal. After a somewhat lackluster first half, the Mustangs found their rhythm to overtake Willow Glen 2-1 on Oct. 29. Jenessa Pompa and Audrey Larson scored the goals for the Mustangs, whose season five days later in a 3-1 loss to St. Ignatius. Against Willow Glen, it was a tale of two halves for Gilroy, which couldn’t generate much offensively in the first half before finding its mojo in the
final 30 minutes. Utilizing crisp passing and strong runs, the Mustangs scored the tiebreaking goal when Larson—who was stationed in front of the Willow Glen cage—alertly pounced on a deflection to put one in the cage. Teammate Bella Domingues unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the right sideline that deflected off of a Willow Glen player before Larson took the rebound and shot it past the goalie for the game-winner with 8 minutes, 46 seconds remaining. “The ball went off the leg of a defender and I was right there to shoot it in,” Larson said. “I was in the right spot.” Was she ever. Larson has a propensity to score proficiently in the postseason, and she made her presence felt with a number of strong runs toward the Willow Glen goal that created scoring opportunities for the team. At the beginning of her freshman year, Larson wasn’t comfortable with her game awareness. Over time, however, Larson has developed into a strong all-around player. “I was always super nervous freshman year because I always felt like I had to prove myself,” Larson said. “I had no idea where
ON POINT Malia Mah makes a pass in the Mustangs’ 2-1 win over Willow Glen in CCS playoff action. I had to be in terms of tipping, but fortunately I had good teammates and coach Adam (Gemar) would show me where to go in relation to the keeper and other players. After that, it was learning to keep
your stick down and putting it all together.” After Willow Glen scored the match’s first goal 6 ½ minutes into the second half, Gilroy got the equalizer when Pompa and Korynn
Yslava connected on a beautiful play in what would set up the eventual game-winner minutes later. Go to gilroydispatch.com to view the full version of this story.

touchdown catches of 20, 33 and 5 yards. Brother Tyler Davis rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries, Jason Scirigione had six receptions for 82 yards, and Ben Sanford completed 22-of-36 passes for 311 yards and four TDs with no interceptions. The Davis twins and Scirigione were also instrumental on defense, with Christian Davis adding an interception, Tyler Davis finishing with five tackles and Scirigione producing three tackles for losses. After winning the Central Coast Section Division IV championship last year, the Christopher High football team was promoted to the upper Gabilan Division this season. For the most part, the Cougars comported themselves well, finishing 3-4 against A-league competition. Now Christopher faces the unenviable task of playing a powerful Valley Christian squad in the
opening round of the CCS Open Division II playoffs on Friday at 7 p.m. in San Jose. Valley Christian is one of the top programs in the section, having advanced to a CIF Bowl State Title game in 2016. The Warriors finished second in the vaunted West Catholic League, with its only league loss coming to champion St. Francis, 7-3, in a game that could’ve gone either way. The Cougars (5-5) are coming off a 35-19 win over crosstown rival Gilroy, with Christian Davis leading the way with perhaps the best game of his career, as he had 11 receptions for 147 yards, including

“For the coach, it’s always a cool thing because it means the team has won something important,” he said. “It was a wild scene. The stands were full and a lot of people were yelling the entire time. It was very polite and encouraging cheers, which made for a great atmosphere.” Once again, the 1-2 punch of Dillania Barnett and Ellie Pickford proved decisive. Barnett scored six goals, Pickford had four and Alena Lepe had two in the match, which was tied at 9-9 entering the fourth period. Santa Catalina scored the first goal of the final quarter, but the Mustangs roared back to score three straight to take a lead they would never relinquish. Mustangs goalie Hannah Hoeptner recorded 16 saves, including several from point-blank range to demoralize Santa Catalina time and again. “There was a point in the match where she blocked three straight shots in a matter of a sixsecond span,” Pickford said. “We get the ball back and score a goal at the other end, and that is
Credit
For the second straight season, the Gilroy High and Santa Catalina girls water polo teams faced off for a third time, this time in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division championship on Oct. 27. Talk about a true rivalry. Just nine days earlier, Santa Catalina blew the Mustangs out of the pool with a 12-1 victory. In the teams’ first league contest, Gilroy prevailed, 16-8. The winner of the rubber match would not only give it bragging rights, but an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs. In a superb match, Gilroy edged Santa Catalina 12-11 to secure a postseason berth in back-to-back years. The Mustangs lost to a powerful Menlo School team last Saturday in the opening round of the Division II tournament, ending its season. However, Gilroy was simply playing with house money at that point, having already accomplished its goal of winning another league championship and clinching a playoff spot. Despite losing five starters off last year’s Pacific Division-winning title team, Gilroy High showed it had the talent and work ethic to become champions yet again. After the final buzzer sounded against Santa Catalina, the Gilroy players and coaches celebrated like there was no tomorrow—and deservingly so.
“At the end it was a madhouse,” said Doug Pickford, who recently completed his fourth season as the Gilroy High coach. “People were jumping in the pool, and just seeing the look of joy on the kids’ faces makes the whole thing worth it.” Per water polo tradition, the winning coach in a championship match receives a not so gentle shove into the pool, and Pickford was more than happy to oblige.

League playoff championship match. The win earned the Mustangs the Mission Division’s lone CCS playoff berth.
such an emotional swing in a game like that. They would get a counterattack and Hannah would come up with a save.” Pickford said the team’s blowout loss to Santa Catalina nine days earlier provided a nice lesson for his team. “We were going for another undefeated league season, and I think we might have been a little bit overconfident,” he said. “First off, you give a ton of credit to Santa Catalina for beating us. … After the game, we talked about this being a recovery lesson and that our confidence didn’t need to be shaken because of one game. The
girls decided they were going to let that one go, that it (the final score) was a fluke and we needed to throw it away.”
Quick score
Alexa Bennett won the opening sprint-off before Gilroy put on a passing clinic, as the ball made its way to Ashlyn Fiack, Fatima Gonzalez, Pickford and Lepe, who was driving toward the cage and scored just 12 seconds into the match. Once again, Barnett used her physicality to overpower the opposition. The senior hole-set scored two of her six goals on sheer effort and determination, following up her
own shot with a quick second shot. “She decided to attack the goalie and twice took the ball from the goalie and pushed it into the cage,” Pickford said. “She’s a big, strong girl and really smart with her play.” Pickford’s daughter, Ellie, is also a heady player. Ellie utilizes her speed to out-maneuver opposing players, a big reason why she entered the Menlo match with a team-high 84 goals, with Barnett close behind with 78. Although Gilroy fell to Menlo— which is a perennial CCS powerhouse—Pickford envisions a day in which the Mustangs won’t be
satisfied just to make the section tournament. “I wake up everyday with a vision we’re not there at CCS just to play, but we’re playing to win it all,” he said. “I’d like to think at some point— maybe not this year or even next year—we’ll be talking about our goal this year is to win a CCS championship, not just to show up to the party. I’m well aware of all the stops that will need to be taken to get there. It’s a long process, but I’m dedicated to seeing it through.” Gilroy won a share of the PCAL’s Mission Division with Santa Catalina with a 13-1 record.

OBITUARIES ROBERT “BOB” LEHOCKY
LORI ROSS JUNE 28, 1954-OCTOBER 13, 2018
L
November, 10, 1940 - October, 26, 2018
ori Ross, a woman cherished by family, friends, colleagues, students, and parents, lost her short and aggressive battle with breast cancer on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
Lori, a native of New York, moved to Hillsborough, CA when she was in 9th grade with her parents, Bruce and Roberta and her three siblings. She attended Burlingame High School, before she pursued her dream of being a teacher, receiving her BA and Masters in Early Childhood Development at Fresno State University. During her Summers, she worked at Girl Scout Camp as Camp Director, finetuning leadership skills and making lifelong friends, including her partner of 38 years Judy (aka: Dee-d) Pick. As an adult, Lori settled in San Jose, CA where she built her family and taught at Los Paseos Elementary School. Lori’s life is best defined by her three passions: motherhood, her role as a teacher, and basketball. Lori’s greatest joy was being a mother, and recently, a grandmother. Giving birth to daughter, Jacie, co-parenting with Judy, and opening their doors and hearts to foster-daughter, Lyndsey, created many happy family memories and adventures. Their family increased to include twin grandchildren, Ava and Anthony (2), who live with their parents, Lyndsey and AJ in Arizona For 38 years Lori lived her dream as an outstanding and beloved lead teacher. Morgan Hill Unified School District named her “Teacher of the Year” in 2015, the year she retired. She was admired for her ability to diffuse difficult situations with kind directness and a sense of humor. Her genuine care for all students was evident and impacted countless lives. Anyone who knew petite Lori has to chuckle over her obsession with basketball. Whether coaching third through sixth graders on the school grounds or following her favorite teams (Stanford Women’s and the WNBA) around the country, everyone knew that the month of March was “sacred time” devoted to her passion. Lori’s retirement, though too short, was filled with adventures and activities with Judy, her daughters, her teacher colleagues, and her Girl Scout friends. On any day, Lori was playing games, bowling, going to movies, attending book group, traveling, dining, cruising with Judy and friends, cuddling grandbabies, and just making the most of every day. In every gathering, Lori was the heart, the laughter, the storyteller, the organizer, and the magnet for great love and friendship. Lori’s impact on the lives of all she knew was significant, and she will be sorely missed! Lori is survived by her spouse, Judy Pick; daughters, Jacie Ross and Lyndsey Buchanan (and AJ); grandchildren Ava and Anthony Buchanan; sister Cheryl Ross (and Jaime); and brothers Brett Ross (and Debbie) and Joby Ross (and Annette). A Memorial Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Friday, November 9 at 7:30PM in the multi-purpose room at Los Paseos Elementary School, 121 Avenida Grande, San Jose 95139. We welcome anyone who knew Lori to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations made to: The Girl Scouts of Northern CA 1650 Harbor Bay Parkway, Suite 100 Alameda, CA 94502 Please reference “Lori Ross, Hidden Falls” These funds will go toward a new Camp Director cabin named after Lori.
