Sheriffs hunt for accused rapist PROSECUTORS FILE CHARGES AFTER COUNTY ALLOWED MAN TO WALK FREE Jennifer Wadsworth

A month after rape suspect Sharwian Bobian was released from jail, law enforcement officers are searching for him. He is accused of false imprisonment and involuntary sex with a woman who brought food and provisions to his makeshift shelter. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office initially declined to pursue criminal charges because they believed the case would be difficult to prosecute. On Monday, they reversed course and filed court papers to proceed against Bobian, a 43-yearold homeless and mentally ill man who left his encampment near the San Martin Transfer waste processing facility following his Jan. 4 release and a brief psychiatric hold. As of 8pm Tuesday, Feb. 5, his whereabouts remained unknown. The Sheriff ’s Office investigated the Jan. 2 incident and detained Bobian that night after interviewing the victim and taking her to Valley Medical Center in San Jose for an hourslong rape kit examination, according to records that became public earlier this week along with the charging documents. Young filmmakers ages 4-14 cultivated their artistic talents at Gilroy Library on Saturday, Jan. 19 as part of a three-week educational series, “Learn How to Make an iMovie” with the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival. “We do it once a year, and this year we did for three weeks instead of two weeks,” said L.
Mattock Scariot, director of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill film festival. “We have 60 kids this year between the two libraries.” Scariot said they’ve partnered with Community Media Access Partnership in Gilroy to help the students make documentaries. During the workshops, the students had opportunities to interview and be interviewed. “We had all these exercises to show who they were as people,” she added. Scariot said the students edited their own versions, and festival straff will edit a longer version of the whole experience to screen at the April festival, which will include a youth and student film festival.
“We’ll do a block of youth films and then high school and college student films,” Scariot said. “They are a collection local and global filmmakers.” Scariot said this year’s event spans five days and includes 10 events throughout the weekend with 23 two-hour blocks of films. “Filmmakers coming from around the world,” Scariot said. “Fifteen industry professionals that are going to be part of three different workshop panels. Including women, industry and independent filmmaking panel and a distribution panel.” Included in these panels, Scariot said, will be Zoe Elton, the programming director of Mill Valley Film Festival, who will be
presented with an Icon Award during the festivities. “She has an incredible background,” Scarlot said, adding that Mill Valley is “one of the biggest film festivals in the world, and she’s coming to ours.” Scariot said the festival holds the educational programs throughout the year to help engage people in filmmaking and encourage them to become filmmakers. “It’s not just about creating a story,” said Scariot. “It’s about looking at themselves and others as the story.” For more information about the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, April 3-5, visit pjiff.org.
Becerra filing forces Feb. 22 showdown AG SEEKS A STAY IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT TO BLOCK MARCH SALE OF O’CONNOR AND ST. LOUISE HOSPITALS Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor

General Xavier Becerra two days later made one final attempt to block the sale of the two hospitals to Santa Clara County. Late on Friday, Feb. 1, Becerra asked the U.S. District Court for an emergency stay of a bankruptcy court approval of the sale, which the same bankruptcy judge had affirmed in emphatic terms on Jan. 30. The final legal showdown is set for Feb. 22 in a hearing in Los Angeles, less than one week before the county’s purchase agreement with Verity Health System expires. That means a judge could make a definitive ruling against
Becerra in time to salvage the $235 million deal and keep the hospitals. The unlikely dispute between Santa Clara County, hospital patients and staff on one hand and the recently elected state attorney general on the other roiled past the boiling point in the last week of January. In one week: • The attorney general said if the sale closes March 1, his bid—pending in U.S. District Court—to claim authority over the deal would be dead. ➝Becerra, 8

anticipated. The creek has reached its peak flows and data readings are showing the flow is decreasing.” Since Feb. 1, when the latest round of storms hit the West Coast, more than 2.5 inches of rain have fallen on Morgan Hill, according to the water district’s website. For the winter so far, Morgan Hill has received about 13.74 inches of rain. The recent storms have had an impact on most waterways in Santa Clara County. Chesbro Reservoir, just west of Morgan Hill, was at about 93 percent of its capacity the afternoon of Feb. 4— up from about 69 percent before the Feb. 1 storms rolled in. Coyote Reservoir in Gilroy was at about 69 percent of its capacity Feb. 4, up from about
51 percent before the latest storms. Anderson Reservoir in east Morgan Hill, the water district’s largest reservoir, was about 34 percent full Monday afternoon. But water district authorities aim to keep that reservoir low during the winter months to prevent flooding upstream when the level reaches the reservoir’s emergency spillway. Anderson is also regulated by state authorities due to the dam’s seismic deficiencies, and must be kept at about two-thirds full or less. There were scattered reports of minor flooding downstream from Uvas Reservoir shortly after the water level reached over the spillway, but no significant incidents. After nearly three consecutive days of rainfall drenched the South County hillsides, Uvas Reservoir began pouring over its emergency spillway Monday morning. While some property owners downstream took precaution, authorities said there was no flood risk associated with Uvas Reservoir surpassing its capacity. It was the first time this winter that the 9,688-acrefoot reservoir on Uvas Road, in western Morgan Hill, reached beyond its
full capacity. As of about 4:30pm Feb. 4, Uvas Reservoir was at 102.7 percent of capacity, according to the Santa Clara Valley Water District website. Shortly after the reservoir reached the spillway, the water district issued a statement assuring residents that there was no immediate threat of flooding. “Water is flowing over the spillway as is normal when a reservoir reaches capacity,” reads the statement on the water district’s Facebook page. “Spillways are designed to allow for controlled releases and to help regulate flows. They don’t automatically result in flooding. There are currently no flood risks along Uvas Creek associated with the spilling, nor are there any flood risks

temperatures continued to drop. A light dusting of snow covered the hills east of Morgan Hill early in the morning Feb. 5.
Police search suspected drug house NARCOTICS, PILES OF CASH RECOVERED, ONE ARRESTED Staff report
Gilroy police say they found narcotics and arrested a man at a home that has been known to officers as a drug dealing location since 2011. Now authorities are going after the homeowner in an effort to make the illegal activity stop for good, according to police. On Feb. 1, the Gilroy
Police Department’s AntiCrime Team served a search warrant for suspected narcotics sales at the home on the 400 block of Lewis Street, according to police. During the search, detectives found more than a quarterpound of methamphetamine, packaged for sales. Also found were cocaine, digital scales, narcotics packaging materials and an electronic money counter, Gilroy police posted on the department’s Facebook page. Officers also found more than $25,000 in cash
during the search of the Lewis Street home. The money is suspected to be proceeds from narcotics sales. Gilroy police have been investigating the home for narcotics sales since 2011, according to authorities. The Feb. 1 search was the sixth time police have conducted a narcotics-related search at the residence since 2011. During each search, police found narcotics and arrested a suspect or suspects. As a result of the Feb. 1 investigation, police arrested one man at the Lewis Street home, and identified
another who is wanted in relation to the narcotics activity. Raul Perez, 50, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sales. He was booked at Santa Clara County Jail and released on his own recognizance until an arraignment date is set in court, police said. Juan Perez, 37, was not at home at the time of the Feb. 1 search, and police are in the process of obtaining a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sales, according to police.

The Anti-Crime Team is also pursuing charges against the owners of the Lewis Street home, on suspicion of maintaining a residence for the purpose of unlawfully selling narcotics, reads the Gilroy Police Department’s Facebook post.
The home is across the street from a city park in east Gilroy, where children often play on a playground and handball courts, police noted. The park has had “many problems with narcotics use and sales” for several years, police said.

Condors at Pinnacles dodge drone PARK RANGERS DON’T CATCH AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER THREATENING RARE BIRDS Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
The big raptors with the 10-foot wingspans apparently have grown fond of the peaks at Pinnacles, where biologists say at least two nesting pairs make their home. Not much is known about the condors, but nearly all are tagged, numbered and equipped with their own GPS devices and radio transmitters—not for their own navigational purposes, but for the biologists whose laptops follow the birds’ movements. Condors in captivity have been known to live 50 years, but not much is known about their life spans in the wild. Condors are visiting the park this time of year as nesting season approaches, which makes it prime time for condor watching, said park biologists. A lead biologist estimated there are likely just six active condor nests in Central California. She

As if poisoning from agricultural pesticides and lead from hunters’ shotgun shells weren’t enough, now the tiny population of California condors in Pinnacles National Park has to worry about drones. Yes, drones. Hikers had notified park rangers late last month that they saw a man “chasing condors with a drone,” apparently trying to get photos of the endangered species. The amateur photographer apparently was taking advantage of drastically reduced ranger
patrols at the park during the 35-day federal government shutdown. Because of the delay in the reporting and reduced staffing, rangers at Pinnacles Park were unable to find the drone operator, said a park spokesperson. “Drones are illegal in the park,” he said, adding the ban holds for all national parks. The rugged trails were still being cleared of debris this week, as rangers and maintenance crews worked to restore access routes that spider through the park’s spectacular scenery. National Park Service biologists also returned to work, monitoring and tracking the endangered bird. California condors, with an estimated Central Coast population now approaching 100, had dwindled to 20 or so in the late 1980s, perilously close to extinction.
SOARING HIGH California condor at Pinnacles National Park. reported this week sighting the first active condor nest within Pinnacles Park boundaries in several years. The soaring, reclusive birds hatch just a single egg every two years, so sighting any active nest is good news in the campaign to save the species. The last successful nest,
hatching a surviving bird, in the park boundaries was spotted four years ago. That nest, in the park’s centennial year, was the first successful nest in 100 years, according to the biologist. Lead poisoning from birdshot shotgun shells— now banned in California— is still the biggest threat to
condors, she said. The other endangered animal in the park is the Townsend big-eared bat, which lives in the unique caves in the Pinnacles. For more information, visit https://www.nps. gov/pinn/learn/nature/
Measure B funding finally released TAX MONEY ALLOCATED TOWARD CITY STREET IMPROVEMENTS Jaqueline McCool Reporter
After a lawsuit held up Measure B funding for over two years, cities across California awaited funding for long-overdue
infrastructure repair and new construction projects. Now South Valley cities will be receiving funding for infrastructure repairs like the repaving of roads, updating striping and other improvement projects. Money from the measure approved by California voters in 2016 was held up in lawsuits, but the California Supreme Court eventually upheld the constitutionality
of the measure by refusing to consider past rulings. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) announced in a press release Jan. 30 that Santa Clara County cities would be receiving Measure B funding. Currently the Measure B tax has already collected $360 million—a small portion of the $6.3 billion expected to be dispersed
by the VTA over the next 30 years. In this round of disbursements, Morgan Hill was given $189,552 and Gilroy was given $240,462. VTA Public Information Officer Holly Perez told the Dispatch that the Jan. 30 event was the first step toward distributing the funds. The measure was approved with 72 percent
of the vote and implements a half-cent countywide sales tax over 30 years. Funds collected go to city and county transit projects. Mayor Roland Velasco and city administrator Gabe Gonzalez had begun discussing what the funds could be used for in Gilroy. Velasco said the city could use the money for road repair or for larger infrastructure projects.
He told the Dispatch that Gilroy is expected to eventually receive $1 million annually in funds. The Jan. 30 check is an advance on that money. “This is a guaranteed set of money that will come to the city; you never know what is going to happen with state money,” said Velasco. “Here’s a set of money that we’ll be able to bank on.”

February is American Heart Month
AG gambles with lives
I
t is now too late to try and convince California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to back off, and allow Saint Louise and O’Connor hospitals to be saved by Santa Clara County. He has doubled down, and all of his cards are on the table. This was his last play. Despite pleas from lawyers, county officials, county supervisors, mayors, city councils, health officers, doctors, editorial writers, lawyers, nurses, EMTs, labor unions and all variety of patients—some with tears in their eyes—in English and Spanish, he didn’t fold. He played his hand. Becerra’s decision to take his request to block the proposed $235 million sale of the two hospitals to U.S. District Court—after twice being rejected in U.S. Bankruptcy Court—puts the fate of healthcare for county residents, especially those of us in South County communities, in the hands of a federal judge in Los Angeles. The cards that this judge flips following a Feb. 22 hearing will make or break the sale, and seal the fate of our two hospitals. Becerra, in court filings, doesn’t believe this assertion by the two parties in the deal— Santa Clara County and Verity Health System—and the judge overseeing Verity’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. He remains content to gamble, with people’s lives at stake. If we are to believe what he has said in his most recent court papers, he asks us to believe that without the protection of his office, the county may close the two hospitals it has offered millions to buy, and that it may choose to deny health care services to the needy and elderly that it is legally obligated to provide. The attorney general asks us to believe him when he says the hospitals will somehow stay open awaiting a more desirable suitor, even though none has appeared. He also asks us, the people who elected him attorney general just three months
ago, to ignore the harsh realities of bankruptcy proceedings seeking relief for creditors owed millions of dollars from a health system that is bleeding $10 million a month. The reality is that no one believes what the attorney general is saying. It may be possible that even he doesn’t believe it. It may be he is simply engaged in a cynical power play to flex his muscles, in a display of arrogance that he knew all along would be futile. It is hard to figure out what political calculus the former six-term Congressman is using to determine that his actions make any sense. Of course, we don’t know what he really is thinking, because the attorney general has declined all requests for interviews, and ignored emailed questions. He has refused to sit and down and meet with Santa Clara County officials, apparently preferring to hide behind the court documents and press releases of his deputies and media team. Santa Clara County Executive Jeff Smith, in an interview with this newspaper last week, was unbelievably still willing the give Becerra the benefit of the doubt—perhaps hoping the attorney general might change his mind at the last minute. “We don’t have any animus towards the attorney general, it’s just that we’re befuddled by his stance,” he told us. “The staff of the attorney general is living in an alternate universe—he’s getting “a lot of bad advice—that’s the only way to make sense out of it.” “We are not interested in being at odds with the attorney general. We just don’t think that he has the authority to impose conditions on us that we legally can’t agree to.” “We’re on the same time team, with the same goals,” Smith said. “It’s as if someone on the same team is trying to shoot me in the back.” Our attorney general has missed an opportunity to demonstrate wisdom and empathy. All we can do at this point is hope he loses this high-stakes matchup.
The staff of the attorney general is living in an alternate universe

February is American Heart Month, and one way to show your love to someone you care about is to learn about heart disease and the risk factors associated with it. In the United States, cardiovascular disease and stroke cause one of every three deaths, or 2,200 deaths per day. The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack. The risk of getting heart disease is increased by your lifestyle, age and family history. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about half of all Americans have at least one of the three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or smoking. Risk factors for heart disease that cannot be controlled are your age and family history. The signs and symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or discomfort; upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw or upper stomach; shortness of breath; or nausea, lightheadedness or cold sweats. If you or someone you know has one of these symptoms, it could potentially be a heart attack, and emergency treatment should be sought out immediately.
The risk of getting heart disease is increased by your lifestyle, age and family history. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about half of all Americans have at least one of the three risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or smoking. While men were once thought to be at higher risk of heart disease, this is no longer true. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease, yet only one in five women believe that heart disease is among their greatest health threats. Heart disease and stroke account for 31.7 percent of all female deaths in California, according to the CDC. A 2010 CDC study found that on average, almost 100 women die from heart disease and stroke in California each day. You can take action to reduce heart disease by changing your lifestyle and diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and lowering your cholesterol and blood pressure. Taking steps to address your health is important as we acknoåwledge American Heart Month. Do it for yourself and your loved ones and get a health check-up. Sen. Bill Monning represents the 17th State Senate District, which includes all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties.

One lawyer familiar with the case characterized Becerra’s filing late Friday on the eve of Super Bowl weekend as a “Hail Mary” pass, aimed at convincing a federal judge that only the attorney general could protect healthcare services in Santa Clara County. Becerra submitted his 29-page filing late Friday, Feb. 1, two days after a similar request for a stay was rejected by the same U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge who had approved the hospitals’ sale in late December. Becerra argued in his district court request that a stay “would promote the public interest,” and “involves important issues of state law regarding health, safety and welfare.” Without the stay, “the families and patients served by O’Connor Hospital and St. Louise Regional Hospital will suffer irreparable injury,” wrote Becerra. In the latest court filing, the attorney general made no mention of the claim by the county and Verity Health that if he is successful in his legal fight, O’Connor and St. Louise will close. He said in a Jan 31 press release that the Jan. 30 court decision “strips our office of the authority to protect patients when hospitals are transferred to public entities.” Becerra’s Feb. 1 filing repeated arguments that were soundly rejected by Bankruptcy Judge Ernest Robles in his Jan. 30 ruling. Robles said he was concerned about the impact on Santa Clara County residents if the two hospitals were to close. Smith said the attorney general’s actions could only be explained by a desire to exert his authority, at the expense of the health and safety of Santa Clara County residents, especially those who live in the South

• The county—and U.S. Bankruptcy Court— said Becerra has no legal basis for his claim. • The county said if Becerra is successful in his second attempt at a stay—the first was denied in bankruptcy court Jan. 30—the Verity Health System sale of the two hospitals would be dead. • Patients, health professionals and local politicians took that one step further, saying Becerra’s actions would close the hospitals and actually put lives of South County residents in danger. • The attorney general told the court he didn’t believe these dire predictions. • In his filing for the stay in U.S. District Court, Becerra said he needed to stop the sale to enable his appeal to continue, but he made no mention that his effort to “preserve vital healthcare services in Santa Clara County” might have the opposite effect. • The attorney general alleged again in more certain terms Feb. 1 that the county had “refused” to guarantee the provision of essential healthcare and emergency services, or to promise acceptance of Medicare and MediCal patients. • County Executive Jeff Smith accused Becerra of making “false” and “misleading” statements, referring to well-publicized statements by the county and to the attorney general’s rejection on Jan. 22 of a signed agreement with the county assuring the provision of the healthcare services to all county residents. • The attorney general said that if he can’t enforce guarantees, “the county is free to close the hospitals or eliminate vital healthcare services in those communities.” • Smith last week called this claim “just absurd” and said the county offered to pay $235 million to buy two hospitals to keep and expand vital healthcare services, not to shut them down. Becerra has declined invitations to meet directly with county officials, and has refused all requests for media interviews.
County communities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Martin. In his Jan. 30 ruling, Robles agreed with that assessment, saying the harm to the attorney general’s office would pale in comparison to the harm to Santa Clara County if the hospitals were to close. Robles also said that Becerra’s district court appeal was futile and that he would probably lose. Becerra said the opposite on Feb.1, telling the District court he is likely to succeed on the merits of his appeal of the bankruptcy court’s approval of the sale. Robles characterized the attorney general’s legal case as weak, with a “lack of merit.” “The attorney general still has not identified the specific statutory provision establishing his authority to review the sale,” Robles said in the order. Smith said in an interview on Jan. 31 that the stated goals of quality health care for all are share by Santa Clara County and the attorney general. “We’re on the same team, with the same goals,” he said. “It’s as if someone on the same team is trying to shoot me in the back.” “We’re going to continue to work as if it’s a done deal. We’re anticipating a clean sale order on the first of March,” he said. In an interview, Richard Adcock, chief executive officer of Verity Health System—whose filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last fall opened the door to the county’s purchase offer—praised the Jan. 30 ruling by the bankruptcy court. “We are happy and proud” of the sale of two of its six hospitals to Santa Clara County and the pending sale— headed for approval next week—of the other four hospitals to KPC Group, a private, Southern California firm, he said. Adcock said Verity is working on a transition plan with Santa Clara County to provide IT and other support in the weeks after the sale is closed March 4. “We believe that working with Santa Clara County is in the best interests of those hospitals, to keep them open,” he said.

Manhunt begins one month after release ➝ Rapist, 1
trial and 25 resulted in convictions. Prosecutors have the unenviable task of deciding whether a claim meets the American Bar Association’s ethical standards for criminal charges: that there’s probable cause of an offense and enough evidence to support a conviction. The victim and her husband said the DA’s reluctance to charge Bobian because an attorney might claim a mistake-of-fact defense suggests more concern for conviction rates than public safety. California law deems rape an act accomplished against a victim’s will “by means of force, violence, duress, menace or fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury.” Lack of consent being the defining element. Though the expectation of victim resistance has been largely eliminated through legislative reforms, it’s still effectively enforced through case law. “It just feels so disgusting and disheartening,” the victim said in a
recent interview. “The criminal system let us down so horrifically.” The couple also took issue with the way prosecutors kept them in the dark on important details, telling them Bobian had no criminal history while his rap sheet includes aggravated assault and evading police convictions in Atlanta, Georgia. The other brushes with the law were mostly petty crimes symptomatic of homelessness and mental illness, like trespassing, shopping cart theft and throwing an object at a moving car. Bobian is currently on probation for the San Mateo offenses, according to court documents. The accuser criticized the DA’s handling of the case as indecisive and concerned more about the defendant than the crime victim. The prosecutor’s reversal follows a month of media interest in the case and outrage expressed privately in the law enforcement community, along with the victim’s willingness to share
Sheriff’s Department photo
had expected the case to move forward in early January, however Clarissa Hamilton of the DA’s sexual assaults team reportedly called the victim the morning after the alleged rape to tell her that the office opted against pressing charges. According to the victim, prosecutors cited a legal doctrine called the Mayberry Defense, saying Bobian might have interpreted the victim’s lack of apparent resistance as consent. Prosecutors changed their minds this week and obtained the warrant to arrest Bobian. The South Carolina transplant has a two-decade criminal history that includes aggravated assault in Georgia and a host of petty crimes in Santa Clara, Santa Barbara and San Mateo counties in California. The San Martin incident rocked the small community, where neighbors shared the victim’s sense
of violation and questioned why the DA allowed the suspect to walk free less than a day after officers brought him to jail. Though the victim, described in court papers as Jane Doe, maintains she was told the morning of Jan. 3 not to expect prosecution, DA spokesman Sean Webby said the case never closed—it was just under scrupulous, time-intensive review. “We've been investigating it the entire time,” Webby said in a Feb. 1 phone call. Most reported rapes go unprosecuted. Nationwide, on average, just 13 of every 1,000 reported rapes get referred to prosecutors, according to data from the U.S. Department of Justice, and about seven of those result in felony convictions. Last year, law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County submitted a combined 994 sexual assault cases to the district attorney’s office, which filed charges in about half of them. Of those, just 34 went to jury

painful details in multiple interviews about the incident with a man she tried to help out of compassion for his miserable situation. “I can’t understand how this could happen in an
age of women’s rights and equality,” she said. “I’m still trying to process the rape, and all those feelings that go with it, and now I feel like I have to go into fight mode.”

Germains Seed Technology, one of Gilroy’s core agribusiness companies, announced the completion of a new organic automated seed processing facility at Swanston Lane and the opening of a second research and development laboratory nearby on Casey Street, just east of downtown near Leavesley Road. The company said it had invested over $7 million in the construction of the new 37,500-square-foot certified organic facility. Germains provides anti-fungal and other treatments for vegetable, sugar beet seeds, as well as other field crops, for both
conventional and organic operations. Germains also purchased and renovated the former Farotte Construction building on Casey Street as its second research lab. The expansion was celebrated at a groundbreaking ceremony Jan. 25 with company officials, and city and Chamber of Commerce leaders. Germains said it has 49 full-time employees at its Gilroy operations, including eight full-time scientists and research support staff. “Germains now has two state-of-the art laboratories dedicated to research and development of new organic and conventional seed treatments for vegetables and sugar beets that will benefit farmers throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico,” the company said in a statement. Germains Seed Technology is a division of ABF Grain Products Ltd.,

HIGH FLYER Former Christopher High standout Xander Bowers goes in for a dunk in Gavilan’s 70-60 win over De Anza College on Jan. 18. The sophomore forward has played an integral role for a Rams team that has their eyes set on reaching the program’s first-ever State Final Eight berth.
GAVILAN ON PACE FOR ANOTHER HISTORIC SEASON jeb goldman Correspondent
Father-son time
“My father and I spent hours in the gym as I grew up playing and we continue to talk basketball all the time,” said Jensen, whose father Kort Jensen coaches the Oakwood High boys basketball team, while Dallas’ brother Derek Jensen is a Gavilan College assistant coach. “When we’re together, (basketball) is all we talk about and my mom knows that, my wife knows that, and they’ve all kind of bought in to what we do and they know how passionate we are.” Dallas Jensen instills that passion in his players every day, both on and off the court. “I think for us, we’ve really had a big emphasis on relationships and making sure our players have totally bought in to the culture, the style of play, our identity and really treating the team like a family,” Jensen said. “There’s obviously been fantastic coaches that have been here before that have helped established that, and I think we’re just fortunate enough that we were able to come in and bring some good players that come from good families and everyone has bought in to what we’re trying to accomplish.” Win or lose, Jensen knows
Robert Eliason
Ask any player on the Gavilan College men’s basketball team who they play for and you’re likely to get a surprising answer. From star Ibn Zaid, who said returning veterans are just as valuable as the newcomers; to sophomore Xander Bowers who said that everyone watches out for each other, the theme is clear: They don’t just play for a team, they’re members of a family. “They all have my back and it just feels like one big family, and I know when I’m ever down they’ve got me and if I’m up they’re gonna be there too,” Bowers said after the Rams’ 70-60 win over De Anza on Jan. 18. For a team that holds onto players for only two years at a time, it’s difficult sometimes to forge those deep bonds among teammates; however, this is not a problem for the Rams. “From last year to this year, there’s only like three returners, but even with the new guys coming, you know from day one it felt like I’ve been knowing these guys for a long time,” said Zaid, last year’s Coast Conference South Division MVP runner-up. A lot of these “new guys” coming in are some of the most talented basketball players in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). So what brings them to Gilroy? Well, Zaid’s reason is similar to just about every other player on the team. “Coach Dallas (Jensen) really is the reason why I came here,” said Zaid. “The first time I met (him) and I saw just how genuine the kind of guy he is. He’s all about family and relationships. I think
that’s why he’s able to recruit guys like me. He really helps us be men on and off the court.” Since Jensen took over the program in 2017, he has overseen one of the most impressive transformations in South Valley Community College basketball history. The year before Jensen’s arrival, the Rams were 4-20 overall, and a dismal 1-11 in conference play. The next year, under Jensen’s leadership, the Rams capped a remarkable 24-5 season with the school’s first conference championship in 50 years. And this season’s success proves last season’s accomplishment was no fluke. What’s Jensen’s secret? He said it comes down to one word: family. And when it comes to basketball families, Jensen knows what he’s talking about.
RAM TOUGH D Daylon Potts has been an impact player for Gavilan, which as of last week had a record of 20-2
overall and 6-0 in the Coast Conference South Division. Potts has tremendous length and is tough on the boards. that he’s already succeeding in a big way, not just because of the players he’s developing, but the young men he’s influencing— and inspiring. Still, with last season’s success, the team knows the pressure is on to keep winning this season. “We want to get to Ventura where it’s the Elite 8 and State Championships,” he said. “We really prioritize goal-setting, whether it’s basketball, personal, academics, and we have really made a continued effort to focus on our goals and make sure we know what we’re trying to accomplish.” For a lot of the players in the program, one of their biggest goals is to get the chance to continue playing basketball at a four-year university after they leave Gavilan, something Zaid has already been given the opportunity to do.
4-year signee
“I’ve actually had the honor to sign my active letter of intent to Eastern New Mexico, so one of my biggest goals is already checked off the list,” Zaid said. Zaid may not be alone, either. The Rams’ winning ways are beginning to attract the attention of many four-coaches, something Jensen has to get used to. Yet for him, there’s a lot more that goes into picking that next college for his players, and it goes far beyond what they do on the basketball court. “It’s interesting, a lot of young men when they’re getting recruited by colleges have (Division 1) aspirations,” Jensen said. “Obviously if they can swing it, fantastic, but I’m very frank with my young men when I recruit them and their families
that I’m more concerned that they go to the right fit for them. I want to make sure that a young man is taken care of and he’s in a situation where he has coaches who are going to look out for him on and off the floor.” For Jensen, coaching has always been about so much more than running plays and doing drills. It’s about establishing relationships, developing as a team, and maturing as people, just as if they were in a family. “I think it’s great because my young men know I care about them so much and they also know I have a sincere love and passion for this game,” he said. “They’re able to come to me and talk about darn near anything on the floor and we’re able to have really open and fluid conversations about that, which I think is great.”

OBITUARIES KEITH VERBLE July 8, 1930 - January 19, 2019
B
orn from mill town roots and raised by a single parent, this man of simple upbringing rose above what many might consider an inevitable destiny of an undistinguished life to be an executive, business owner and someone who affected the lives of many people. As a young man, he played baseball, worked the cotton fields and attended high school in North Carolina. Something drove him to join the Air Force and he participated in the Berlin Airlift after World War II. That led to attending North Carolina State University and then on to attending the University of Southern California where he graduated with a Masters in aeronautical engineering. If he did nothing else in his life, he was already a success. But this was only the beginning. Defense contractors were the rage in Southern California in the late 1950s. He joined that industry by working for Northrop as an engineer and then for Ford Aerospace as an engineer and executive. At Ford, he led development of precision guided munitions systems which were the predecessor of what is still used today by the American military. Whatever your thoughts may be on this subject, this technology saved many lives by eliminating what is commonly referred to as collateral damage. After taking early retirement from Ford, he joined the former FMC in San Jose for 10 years. But this still wasn’t the end. After a long and distinguished career in the defense contracting industry, retiring to a life of leisure just wasn’t in the cards. The drive was still there and a fencing business was started. Starting your own business is a big task for a young man, let alone someone who many might think should be enjoying life in a rocker on the porch. Not the case here. As a contractor, he further distinguished himself as someone who is responsive, trustworthy and reliable. A rare set of traits in the industry. The work persona hid a gentle man. He could present a stern and demanding face but was a different person on the home front. He was a man that enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, a sunset, a mountain peak and Tom Jones. Not much was better than a favorite TV show and a drink. He was kind and considerate. One that would do anything for you. Not one to judge or hold a grudge. He was civil and gracious to everyone. A man of integrity, honesty and worthy of one’s trust. Everyone he met deserved and got respect and it was reciprocated by those that got to know him. He was someone you could look up to, someone you would want to be like, someone you would want your children to grow up to be.
