FIVE CLINICS WOULD CLOSE IF BANKRUPTCY COURT DOESN’T OK SALE BY VERITY Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Barry Holtzclaw
A subsidiary of El Camino Hospital has a purchase agreement with Verity Medical Foundation to buy five healthcare clinics in Santa Clara County, including clinics in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The Feb. 27 offer by Silicon Valley Medical Development of Mountain View is awaiting approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles, the same court that approved the purchase of O’Connor and St. Louise Hospital by Santa Clara County. Employees at the clinics last month were told by Verity Medical Foundation, which is part of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding of Verity Health System, that seven clinics owned by Verity would close March 31 unless they were sold.

to read aloud to those students. Flores, pictured above reading the book “The Most Magnificent Thing” in Ashley Martinez’s second-grade class at Glen View, wore a Dr. Seuss hat as she entertained her student audience. More than 50 staff employees and community members volunteered to read aloud book selections in each classroom, from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. The Gilroy welcome center is now a designated state welcome center, one of just 18 throughout California. The new designation will provide state money to promote Gilroy and new signage to indicate to visitors that a state welcome center is in the city. A celebration of the rebranding March 1 was a who’s who of city officials, with council members,
the mayor and Chamber of Commerce members all present. “By bringing people into our community, they spend money,” said Jane Howard, director of Visit Gilroy, which staffs the site. “If they hear more about Gilroy they might say, ‘Let’s just stay another day.’” The work toward the new designation began in 2011, when the welcome center moved from its

New hospitals will need county subsidies COUNTY SEES $400 MILLLION IN CAPITAL SPENDING Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Santiago is the director of the Santa Clara County Health System. John Hennelly is still top executive at St. Louise and Patricia Ryan still holds that role at O’Connor; both now report to Paul Lorenz, CEO of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (who reports to Santiago). Richard Adcock, the CEO of former owner Verity Health System, offered these parting words in a statement emailed to this newspaper: “The completion of the sale of O’Connor and St. Louise Regional Hospitals to Santa Clara County means that these important institutions will continue providing local communities with the high-quality care they need and deserve. Throughout this process, the county has shown great leadership and partnership in helping us achieve this shared mission.” At St. Louise, the Gilroy hospital will retain its contract with the CALSTAR 2 emergency transport system. The De Paul Health Center in Morgan Hill will continue to offer a range of outpatient services. De Paul was the original St. Louise hospital site until 1999 when the hospital was relocated to Gilroy. “We are excited to bring these community hospitals into our health system as we expand and enhance the high-quality care that so many Santa Clara County residents have come to rely on,” said Smith in a statement. “Our new partners share our mission, values and passion to serve.”

The new Santa Clara County Health System that began operation this month offers new stability for healthcare services, especially for thousands of Medicare, Medi-Cal, uninsured and South County residents—but it also has a price tag for all county taxpayers. The addition of O’Connor Hospital in San Jose and Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy will increase the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center subsidy from the county’s general fund by about $20 million in 2019-20, to $100 million, estimates County Executive Jeff Smith. In an interview with this newspaper on the eve of the completion of the $235 million purchase of the two hospitals by the county, Smith noted that the growth in the operating deficit of the new health system is a small percentage of the county’s $7 billion general fund. The county executive said improved management at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center reduced its annual county subsidy from $250 million in 2011 to approximately $80 million in the fiscal year that ends in June. The medical center has a $1.84 billion operating budget in 2018-19. O’Connor, with a $300 million operating
budget, and St. Louise, with a $100 million operating budget, will swell total county health system annual spending to nearly $2.24 billion. Smith said economies of scale in administration and improved Medicare reimbursements will put the two hospitals purchase out of bankruptcy court on a firm financial footing. Medicare reimbursements for public hospitals are higher than for privately owned hospitals, he said. The county executive said he expects the transition to the new threehospital system to be relatively seamless, with surgeries and treatments proceeding as scheduled, and patients continuing to see the same faces on the medical staff, and in related clinics. In the first weekend of March, new websites were in place. Beginning this month and continuing into the summer, Smith said patients and staff would begin seeing some significant changes at St. Louise and O’Connor, as the county begins $400,000 in capital improvements, including new hospital beds, new elevators, and a new IT system for medical records to fully integrate medical information among the three hospitals. The hospitals and clinics are operated under a consolidated license from the California Department of Public Health, and the county has put in place new reporting procedures for hospital administrators. Deputy County Executive Rene G.

“This acquisition is truly a win-win for the community. It prevents the closure of two critically important hospitals and ensures continued access to medical services for those who need it, regardless of ability to pay,” said Supervisor Joe
Simitian, president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. “We have worked hard over the past few months to lay the foundation for transitioning these new facilities into the county family of healthcare resources,” said Lorenz.
The two acquired hospital boards will stay on as community advisory boards, said Smith. He added that the board of the charitable foundations for each hospital will remain in place, and the foundation money remains dedicated to each hospital community.

center was more established, Howard said, the board decided to apply again. This time around, Gilroy was one of four cities tapped to be a state visitor center. Howard said that since the move in 2011, the center has seen 260,000 visitors from 125 different countries. Bringing tourism to the city has been the focus of local politicians in recent years, with efforts to revitalize the downtown and promote local businesses. Howard believed the new designation would bring more people to the city and might entice them to stay longer. The welcome center currently receives $300,000 in annual funding from the city,

The prospective owners are hopeful Verity will keep the clinics open until the sale is approved, ensuring an ownership transfer that doesn’t affect healthcare services. “Silicon Valley Medical Development seeks to minimize any gap in service, but it is too soon to know timing of any new clinics, as much of this process is dependent upon the bankruptcy proceedings,” a spokesman for the El Camino subsidiary said in a statement to this newspaper. If the El Camino offer is accepted by the bankruptcy court, the anticipated closing date for the transaction is April 1. The five clinics included in the purchase agreement are: Morgan Hill Medical Associates and Pediatrics, 18550 DePaul Dr., Morgan Hill, near the countyowned De Paul Health Center; Gilroy Primary Care, 9360 No Name Uno, Gilroy, next to countyowned St. Louise Regional Hospital; McKee Clinic, 227 N. Jackson, San Jose, near Regional Medical Center; Willow Glen Clinic and Urgent Care, 625 Lincoln Ave., San Jose; and Good Samaritan Clinic, 2585 Samaritan Dr., San Jose, in west San Jose near Good Samaritan Hospital and Los Gatos. group would lease the five clinic locations and enter into a professional services agreement with San Jose Medical Group physicians. “Our organization and its dedicated physicians have been providing care to patients of these clinics for over 60 years, and we are like family,” said Dr. Shabnam Husain, internist and chairman of San Jose Medical Group JMG. “We are optimistic and hopeful that SVMD can obtain the assets to open new clinics in a timely manner, providing a new home for our physicians to care for our patients in these communities.” Harrison added, “We believe this would be a positive solution to a difficult situation and best serve our community’s healthcare needs. These are dedicated physicians with loyal patients in need of a new operating partner that shares their mission and vision to provide the best care possible. SVMD, in partnership with these physicians, can well fulfill that role.” SVMD currently owns and operates medical clinic sites in Mountain View, San Jose, Los Gatos and Cupertino. “We have worked hard to prepare a fair bid and lay the groundwork for necessary partnerships to quickly provide continuity of care. As Verity clinics close, we believe our plans would provide for a positive outcome for these physicians, their patients and our community as whole,” said Harrison.

close this month. Attempts to reach these clinics this week were not successful. If the Silicon Valley Medical Development purchase offer is accepted by the bankruptcy court, the new owner would have a professional services agreement with the San Jose Medical Group and the providers in Morgan Hill, both pediatrics and adult primary care, according to an El Camino spokesperson. The pediatrician would continue to practice in the same building, but in a different office suite. Verity Health System, currently in chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings along with Verity Medical Foundation, has indicated its intention is to close the clinics if the court doesn’t approve the purchase. Under the proposed asset purchase agreement, Silicon Valley Medical Development would acquire equipment and furnishings inside those clinics, and assume responsibility for maintaining electronic medical records, according to an El Camino spokesperson. If the court approves the proposed agreement, the prospective owners said they would plan to open new clinics to service communities. “We currently operate several local clinics and can provide continuity of care and service to these patients,” said Bruce Harrison, president of Silicon Valley Medical Development. According to Harrison, if the offer is approved by the bankruptcy court, his

State gets tough on affordable housing
A
s California’s housing shortage deepened in the last decade, Jerry Brown made only token efforts to address it. However, his successor as governor, Gavin Newsom, promises to confront it head on, even pledging during his campaign to build 3.5 million new units in six years, which would require annual production to quadruple. That’s patently impossible to achieve, but he’s taking a stab at making good on his promise with a carrot-and-stick approach. Newsom has targeted local opposition to new housing as the main obstacle. As he unveiled his new budget in January, he both offered cities and other local governments more money to ramp up housing construction and threatened to take state transportation aid away from those that failed to meet new and more ambitious state housing quotas, particularly money from the new fees and gas taxes that the Legislature passed in 2017. “You don’t reach those goals, we’re going to take SB 1 money from you,” Newsom said, referring to Senate Bill 1, the gas tax measure that raises about $5 billion a year. Later, Newsom underscored his more aggressive assault by suing one city, Huntington Beach in Orange County, for failing to zone enough land to meet its housing quota. His administration also identified several dozen other cities it said were dragging their feet. So far, Gilroy and Morgan Hill have done an admirable job including affordable housing options in their approval of new developments, even adding entire affordable housing sites, like Alexander Station in Gilroy, that keep the cities out of the governor’s crosshairs. Understandably, Newsom’s threat to withhold transportation money has riled local government officials who had been counting on allocations to fix their roads and streets. They’ve been giving their local
legislators—many of whom are former city council members—an earful. One by one, Newsom’s fellow Democrats criticized the punishment plan, which is still being refined. “Going after (transportation) funding is not something I think should be on the table,” said one legislator. While there was opposition to the entire concept, legislators were especially critical of tying transportation funding to actual housing production and not merely zoning enough land to meet housing quotas. “You’re tying SB 1 money to the production, where cities are only accountable for planning for it,” Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, an Encinitas Democrat, said. “There’s a flaw in that logic.” She made a valid point, and it may be the Achilles heel of Newsom’s carrot-and-stick approach. Cities can, and should, encourage housing through land-use planning processes, but ultimately whether planned-for housing is built depends on factors out of their control. By necessity, the vast majority of housing investment comes from the private sector, and cities can’t force developers and their lenders to build. And even in cities that have zoned enough land and approved specific development proposals, production often lags because builders cannot find enough carpenters, electricians and other construction workers. Meanwhile, the resistance to Newsom’s approach displayed during the legislative hearing may take a more direct form. Local government officials are talking about writing a ballot measure that would protect the transportation financing that SB 1 promised, and that voters ratified last year by rejecting a ballot measure to overturn it. This could get ugly. Dan Walters is a writer with CalMatters, a non-profit journalism project in Sacramento.

The annual report by the California Department of Justice outlining the status of the state's Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS) released March 1 by Attorney General Xavier Becerra reflects a systematic failure in the program to remove firearms from individuals who are prohibited from owning them. In 2013, the staff of then-attorney general Kamala Harris first identified a backlog of 20,721 in the APPS database. At that time, the Department of Justice promised to eliminate the backlog. As of this writing, the attorney general's office has spent more than $70 million on the APPS program. Yet the new report shows the public's safety is at an increased risk, with 23,222 individuals in the APPS database. These individuals are prohibited from possessing firearms. This new number and the ongoing lack of progress are unacceptable. As the new attorney general for the state of California, Becerra has a number of leadership opportunities relating to the APPS program. He has an opportunity to work better with law enforcement agencies around the state to assure that weapons are obtained from those in the APPS database when they are convicted of crimes. He can educate his law enforcement industry counterparts throughout the state that they should inform his office any successful early acquisition of firearms from prohibited individuals. Secondly, the attorney general needs to work more closely with human relations, information technology, union negotiators and budget analysts to improve his own department. I stand ready to assist Becerra in in managing his department so that he is successful in removing firearms from individuals who have been identified as inappropriate for this unique privilege, In April 2018, Senate Republicans asked the attorney general to conduct an in-depth review of APPS. Senate Republicans also have requested on multiple occasions that the Senate Rules Committee approve a joint oversight hearing to review the APPS program and the lack of progress by Department of Justice. These requests have received little to no attention. State Sen. John Moorlach
Derail this train Well of course we understand why those who reap the money from the ill-advised Supermassive Black Hole Bullet Train keep on rolling, churning up work to justify their salaries, etc., but why do local leaders allow the taxpayers to be abused by them? Who do our elected leaders represent, them or us? In the face of all the evidence against it, why cram an utterly unnecessary monstrosity down our throats? Logic and reason and economics be damned, they are making their millions trying to justify their extravagant waste, more so than the other public sector transit monstrosities that already are carried on the backs of motorists and taxpayers. The pig cannot fly, yet they think that they can make us pay for it anyhow. If it was a horse, then we would shoot it. They insist on making California the laughing stock of the nation, and we let them. Why don't local leaders stand- up for the taxpayers for a change, and just say no to the promoters of the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Trojan horse? If private sector investors want to risk their fortunes on a financial disaster, then let them. But our leaders ought to be ashamed of themselves for allowing this financial transport nightmare to continue to eat more and more of our tax dollars. It's no wonder that one million Californians have fled. How many more will it take before our local leaders wake up and smell the coffee? There are private sector solutions which would give us more transport for less money. Why don't we learn from history? Joseph P. Thompson

State calls Gilroy school ‘distinguished’ EARLY COLLEGE ACADEMY STUDENTS TAKE CLASSES AT GAVILANFREE Scott Forstner Reporter
Dr. TJ Owens Early College Academy was among 162 middle and high schools recognized as a 2019 California Distinguished School by the State Department of Education. The program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices. Schools are awarded for achieving exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years or closing the achievement gap between two school years, according to a Feb. 25 announcement. “I would like to commend these schools
for fighting for a better future for our students, closing achievement gaps and improving academic performance,” state Superintendent of of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said. Schools that applied were evaluated on their performance and progress on test scores, suspension rates and graduation rates. Schools were also eligible to apply for a California Exemplary Program Award in arts education, physical activity and nutrition education or Career Technical Education. Winners will be announced at a later date. Distinguished School award winners represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning and collaboration, but also “highly successful school climate efforts ranging from real-time conflict resolution to positive
behavior intervention,” according to the state. The Gilroy Early Learning Academy, established in 2007, was one of only 10 schools within Santa Clara County that garnered the state’s top honor. It was awarded the California Distinguished School designation in 2013 as well. The school is an educational partnership between Gilroy Unified School District and Gavilan College, and is funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The school enrollment this year is 275. The Gilroy school (9th12th grade) was among the top 25 high schools in California, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best High School Rankings. The Gilroy Unified School District campus was awarded a gold medal for its accomplishment as
the 23rd best in the state out of a pool of 2,100. It was also ranked 172nd among 20,500 public high schools evaluated across the country by the U.S. News & World Report. To be considered for the Early Learning Academy, prospective students must submit an application including school records (academic transcript, current year grade report/ progress report, disciplinary records and attendance records); a copy of California CAASPP Test Results; two complete Student Assessment and Recommendation forms from current English and math teachers; a student essay; and a parent essay. In addition, students must take the PSAT and submit those results to the school. An in-person panel interview is also part of the process along with
a writing portion with a quick write prompt. Application packets can be found at geca.gilroyunified.org/admissions. “If you apply for this innovative, highly supportive and academically challenging program and are selected to attend, your four years of high school will be spent on the Gavilan College campus,” according to the school description. “In four years, you could graduate from GECA with not only a high school degree, but also an AA/AS or 60 transferable college units. That means that one could enter the UC, CSU or private four-year university of your choice with your first two years of college fully or nearly completed.” Thurmond said in a statement. “Thanks to teachers, administrators, classified employees and parents working together,
these schools meet the needs of all of their students, provide high-quality educational experiences and put kids on a pathway to great careers.” A component of the California School Recognition Program, the Distinguished Schools program was on a three-year pause while California transitioned to its new assessment and accountability system. From 2015 to 2017, California recognized schools that demonstrated exemplary achievements with the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program. The Distinguished Schools program returned last year. It recognizes elementary and middle and high schools in alternate years and allows eligible schools to apply once every two years. Schools recognized as awardees hold the title for two years.
Gilroy teacher featured in county PSA series SOUTH VALLEY TEACHER RACHAEL CORNAGGIA TELLS WHY SHE TEACHES Staff report
South Valley Middle School teacher Rachael Cornaggia was featured in the latest edition of Santa Clara County Office of
Education’s “Why I Teach” video public service announcement series in support of the 2019 Teacher Recruitment Fair. In the seventh installment of the series, 2018 Teacher of the Year winners review their careers in teaching and share student success. For Cornaggia, a middle school mathematics teacher in Gilroy Unified School District, the joy comes from “letting [the students] know that they are going to get it
at some point,” she said. Cornaggia is joined by Marilyn Goldsmith from Millbrook Elementary School in the Evergreen School District and Janet Blake, recently retired from Oster Elementary with the SCCOE. Blake spent 45 years as a special education teacher working with children who are deaf and hearing impaired, “helping them put the connections together.” Facing a significant
shortage of qualified teachers, SCCOE is hosting its annual Teacher Recruitment Fair on March 30. Credentialed candidates, individuals who will have a credential by fall 2019, individuals with a credential from outside of California, and candidates with at least one year of experience in a teaching intern program are all invited to network with and have questions answered by recruiters and credentials
specialists. On-site interviews may also be offered. For more information and to register for the Teacher Recruitment Fair, visit sccoe. org/newsandfacts/TRF. The 10-part video PSA series continues next week. In addition to being posted to the SCCOE YouTube channel, the videos will also be provided to local cable access channels in various municipalities throughout the county.

Gilroy Library to host Parent Project Program MULTI-AGENCY EFFORT AIMS TO HELP FAMILIES BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR TEENS Staff report
The Santa Clara County Library District is hosting a ground-breaking program at the Gilroy Library
that helps parents steer their teenagers away from truancy, delinquency and worse. Up to 30 local parents were invited to take part in The Parent Project, a 12-week class conducted in Spanish that will run from March 6 to May 22. “This program builds on our efforts at the library to focus on the specific information needs of teens and their families, and the special
challenges that many of them face,” said County Librarian Nancy Howe. “Gilroy Library is a welcoming place for all ages, making it the logical setting for such a familybased program.” The county library district is working in partnership with the County District Attorney’s Office, the County Department of Family and Children’s Services’ Prevention
County Parent Project Director Gloria Maturino at (408) 808-3794 or parentproject@da.sccgov.org. “This program is a tool to help parents communicate with their at-risk kids,” said County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who is also the Library Joint Powers Authority board chairman. “We anticipate reduced substance abuse and gang participation, and expect better grades
Bureau and the Gilroy Police Department. Since 2008, more than 7,000 county parents have graduated from the Parent Project, helping them to divert their children from destructive and dangerous behavior. “Families are made stronger by developing the skills and tools they need to deal with their strong-willed children,” said Maturino. For information, contact
and school attendance, which are critical to the future of these young people, as well as the health of the local community.” The Gilroy Library’s Parent Project class was supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the state librarian.

Sex abuse victims sue school district LAWSUIT SAYS MORGAN HILL TURNED BLIND EYE TO ABUSE OF DANCERS Michael Moore Editor
The families of three teenage girls have filed court documents accusing the Morgan Hill Unified School District of negligence that allowed former drama production contractor Kevin Cole to sexually abuse the plaintiffs at various times in recent years on a local high school campus. The complaint, filed in January in Santa Clara County Superior Court, seeks an unspecified amount of damages from MHUSD and Cole for “mental, physical and nervous pain and suffering” due to the abuse, and for costs associated with medical and therapeutic treatment of the girls’ injuries, reads the lawsuit filed by attorneys Robert Allard and Lauren Cerri of the Corsiglia McMahon and Allard law firm. Two of the girls’ families are also suing Morgan Hill-based youth theater company South Valley Dance Arts—which hired Cole for a show where
some of the alleged abuse occurred—for negligence. Cole, 36, of Newark, was convicted last year of misdemeanor annoying and molesting a child in relation to an incident backstage at an SVDA production of The Nutcracker at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill in late 2017. During the jury trial, six teenage girls testified that Cole had inappropriately touched and spoken to them during theater instruction or performances over the course of four years. The jury found him guilty in June 2018 of victimizing one of the accusers. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and is on probation for the criminal conviction, according to court records. He later filed a notice to appeal the conviction, which is currently under consideration by the courts. Cole could not be reached for comment on the recent lawsuit. During the 2017 SVDA production, Cole was accused of touching female performers on intimate body parts, over their clothing, while helping them change backstage. A parent called Morgan Hill police, who arrested him as he was leaving Sobrato’s theater the night of Dec. 1, 2017. The victim of the crime

for which Cole was convicted last year is not among the plaintiffs in the January lawsuit, which is in its initial litigation stages. Two of the plaintiffs are alleging that Cole’s abuse took place during the Nutcracker performance. In a previous unrelated case, the Allard firm in March 2017 secured an $8.25 million settlement from MHUSD on behalf of three young girls who were sexually molested by John Loyd, their fifth-grade teacher at Paradise Valley Elementary School. Loyd was convicted of molesting four children on the southwest Morgan Hill elementary campus, and is currently serving a 40-year prison term. Cerri said the plaintiffs in the Cole case are hoping to resolve their complaint with MHUSD out of court. “Given our experience with the MHUSD, we are hopeful that we will be able to come to a resolution that is in the best interests of our clients without much involvement of our clients or having to proceed to trial,” Cerri said. It was also revealed during Cole’s criminal trial that prior to the alleged abuse during The Nutcracker, Cole had been the subject of a history of complaints to MHUSD staff.
In 2014, a Sobrato student told school staff that Cole—then a school employee—had inappropriately touched and spoken to her. Two school staff members at the time—drama teacher Chris DeMelo and assistant principal Vera Gomes—conducted a cursory investigation into the student’s accusations and found her complaint not credible. The school employees did not report the abuse allegations to police. The school district continued employ Cole until 2016, according to testimony in the criminal trial. While the plaintiffs in the January lawsuit are listed anonymously, this incident closely matches the experience of plaintiff “Jane Doe 3” as described in Allard’s complaint. This girl was “sexually abused, molested, harassed and/or assaulted” by Cole on the Sobrato High campus, “many times in front of school staff,” the complaint reads. The victim, a Sobrato student at the time, was subjected to Cole’s abuse starting with the 2014-15 school year, through August 2017. Allard’s lawsuit says a complaint in 2014 to MHUSD staff had to do with Cole’s behavior toward two female students. The
Kevin Cole January lawsuit notes that state law considers the MHUSD employees to be mandatory reporters of alleged child abuse, and accuses them of shirking their legal obligation to report the complaints about Cole to local police. MHUSD “owed a duty, through its employees, to supervise and protect such children entrusted to its care from harm…and to report any reasonable suspicion of child abuse” to law enforcement, the lawsuit reads. MHUSD spokeswoman Lanae Bays said the district is currently “limited in the ability to respond” to the recent allegations, in
order to protect the privacy of minors and employees involved. “We can share that Kevin Cole was not employed by the district at the time of the incidents that led to his arrest in 2017, and the minors involved were not Morgan Hill Unified School District students,” Bays said on behalf of MHUSD. The district filed its response to the complaint in Santa Clara County Superior Court Feb. 11. The response from MHUSD’s attorneys argues the the district is not responsible for each of the claims listed in the plaintiff’s lawsuit for various reasons.

WRESTLING
HE’S NO. 1 Gilroy High senior Ryan Reyes gets his arm raised in triumph after he won the 195-pound title match in the CIF State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 23 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. Reyes had a dominating run in the tournament, going 6-0 with four pins.
RYAN REYES FULFILLS A LIFELONG GOAL, WINS CIF TITLE emanuel lee Sports Editor
As a kid, Ryan Reyes often spent the first weekend in March watching the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. The Gilroy High senior was in attendance when his older brother, Nikko, won the second of his two titles in 2012. So it wasn’t a surprise then when Ryan was overwhelmed with emotion after he won a state championship in the 195-pound division on Feb. 23, accomplishing a goal he set out years ago. “It was sort of surreal when it was my time to go (for my match to start),” he said. “I got pretty emotional because it’s been a long process for me to get to this point. It’s been crazy with a lot of ups and downs, and when it was over, I thought it was the coolest thing especially because I saw my brother win this tournament twice. I’ve watched this tournament since I was little, with the light on the mat and the wrestlers (and everywhere else pitch black).” What made Reyes’ victory all the more rewarding was the fact he finished in third place in each
of the previous two years. The third-place match is tough for wrestlers mentally since they were one step away from competing in the finals. So close yet so far. “I learned the most the last two years after getting everything taken away,” he said. “It was the biggest dream I had as a little kid, and when you’re going through the whole thing and to get that taken away in the semifinals, it’s heartbreaking and it takes a real warrior to come back. It’s a real blow and everything can break down mentally, but you have to regain and recoup, and I’ve done that twice to win third place. But it was time to collect and know everything I’ve done in the past was going to pay off. I think in the semifinal match I was the most hyped up I’ve ever been. I wanted that match so badly and to break the curse of losing in the semis. It felt good.” Reyes ran roughshod over the competition, recording four pins, a technical fall victory and a 4-2 decision over Jadon Martin of Buchanan in the title match. “I didn’t feel in danger in any match,” he said. “I felt completely in control.” In the championship match, Reyes went up 2-0 late in the first period after unleashing a 2-on-1 key lock throw—“That is sort of my bread and butter,” he said— and immediately followed that into a two-point nearfall for a 4-0 lead. Martin’s only points came on a pair of escapes in the first
and second periods, respectively, and Reyes said he kept on going for shots in the third period to try to up his lead. Reyes had the mindset to stay aggressive and not stand on the lead. “Everything going through my mind at that point was preached to me two weeks before the state tournament, and that was don’t hang on a lead, that we want to open up the gap,” he said. “I’m telling myself in this match, ‘Don’t hang on the lead, don’t hang on lead.’ I took three deep shots, but didn’t finish the shots (to score points). I really wanted to get one more finish before the match ended. … My best defense is my offense, and I put myself in the right position to win.” Did he ever. Reyes, who has been ranked No. 1 in the state at 195 pounds for virtually the entire season, rewarded himself for a long and grueling season by finishing a 24-ounce Porterhouse steak and potatoes from Harris Ranch on the drive back home a day later. For good measure, Reyes ate two cookies and some Haagen-Dazs ice cream. “I went absolutely crazy,” he said. “I finished it.” Just like he did on the mat. As the referee raised Reyes’ arm in victory, he looked up to the Gilroy cheering section and saw his parents, Laz and Leticia, before climbing over a small gate and going up rows of seats to hug his parents in one of the more meaningful embraces they’ll ever have.
“I’m pretty sure my mom was crying and my dad got pretty emotional, too,” Reyes said. “I got emotional just hugging my coaches and parents because it was sort of like, ‘We finally got it done, we finally did it.’ When the match was over, it didn’t really hit me. And the next day, it still didn’t really hit me. Now it’s like, ‘Wow, it’s the real deal and it really happened.’” For the second straight year, Gilroy finished as the runner-up in the team standings, totaling 182 points to Buchanan’s 235. Chase Saldate and Nick Villarreal took second in their respective weight classes, at 138 pounds and 285 pounds. Saldate lost to three-time state champion Jesse Vasquez of Excelsior Charter, 6-3, while Villarreal lost 3-2 to Michael Jeffus of Turlock. Sophomore Victor Jacinto finished fourth at 126 pounds, John Fox took sixth at 145, Dan Vizcarra took sixth at 152, and Nathan Villarreal placed seventh at 160. Saldate had a strong run, rolling through the competition before matching up with a wrestler who will aim for a fourth state title next year. Saldate, a Michigan State commit, will no doubt use the match as a learning experience and come back stronger than ever. Villarreal will do the same. The state’s top-ranked heavyweight for virtually the entire season, Villarreal lost a battle of attrition by the closest of margins. Neither fighter scored in the first round as they jostled for position with a lot of

handfighting, trying to figure each other out. Villarreal went up 1-0 on an escape in the second period, but Jeffus answered with a two-point takedown midway through the period. Jeffus scored on an escape early in the third to go up 3-1 before Villarreal received a point as Jeffus was called for stalling. Villarreal tried desperately for a takedown and secure a victory in the waning moments of the match, but it wasn’t meant to be. Villarreal said he was hampered by a left foot injury he suffered in the middle of the second period, which made the loss all the more painful. However, the junior still had plenty to be thankful for and proud of the tremendous season he produced. “My coaches told me good job and that I needed to work on certain things,” Villarreal said. “And they were glad it (the injury) happened in this match and not anytime before. At first after the loss I was pretty upset. It was a little heartbreaking. But once I realized during the match that I had probably broken or fractured my foot and got back on my feet to finish the match and almost winning the match, it felt like a victory to me.” Villarreal will come back next season with the proverbial chip on his shoulder, knowing how close he was to winning a state championship. He has improved every season and was a tour de force this season, utilizing tremendous agility and cardio to wear down the competition.

span. Instead of relying on the long ball, Gilroy will be station-to-station, moving runners over and producing hits to every part of the field. There are several players who hit well, including sophomore Matt Mendosa. “He has incredible speed,” Mauter said. No kidding. Mendosa had 10 of the team’s 13 stolen bases after five games, and has done a standup job at the leadoff spot, as he’s only struck out once and walked three times with a .688 onbase percentage. Mendosa also leads the team in hits (8) and runs scored (9). Christopher High-transfer Connor Villaneuva leads the starters with a .583 average, Junior Chris Colyer is hitting .385 and senior David Martinez has a team-high six RBIs. Gilroy will have to get things done offensively with a balanced approach where one through nine everyone is doing something positive. “I can’t point to one guy that’s my superstar because that guy

In the last couple of years, the Gilroy High baseball team has had some heavy hitters in the lineup, players who were a threat to hit a home run on any pitch. That won’t be the case this season, and yet the Mustangs aim to be a more consistent and productive group in 2019. “You look at our team and we don’t have those big swingers, so it goes back to the kids buying into what we as coaches are talking about,” said Cole Mauter, who along with Dennis Castro are in their first season together as cocoaches. “They’ve responded not with, ‘Oh, I don’t get to hit bombs now,’ but with a buy in of understanding the process.” Last season, Gilroy finished 11-7 in the Gabilan Division, good enough for sole possession of second
place. The Mustangs also were limited to 3 runs or fewer in a game seven times a year ago, a number they want to reduce dramatically this season. “It’s just a different brand of baseball than last year,” Mauter said after the team’s 5-3 win over Live Oak last Saturday. “We’re a little more of that small ball, a little more taking advantage of a situation for example when you have to bunt. There’s not many teams that will bunt the 3 hole (hitter), but we did that today. There are not too many guys that will bunt their 4 hole (player), but I also think we did that one time. If we can’t hit the ball over the fence, we’ll have to find a way to manufacture runs and the evidence is we’re dong it and that’s what we’re happy about as coaches.” Early on at least, Gilroy has had no problems scoring runs. The Mustangs were 3-2 through their first five games, having scored 38 runs in that

energy and they have a buy-in to the good qualities of what makes good baseball players.” Ace Sergio Sanchez, who is coming off a terrific junior season, pitched
five innings of one-run ball against Live Oak. The senior right-hander, who has a three-quarters arm delivery, has an arsenal of off-speed pitches and locates well.

November 6, 1951 – February 27, 2019 Ann passed away peacefully in San Jose, CA, on February 27, 2019, surrounded by her family. Born on November 6, 1951, in Tres Pinos, CA to Rudy & Florence Vargas. Educated at San Benito High School and University Wisconsin at Madison. Ann lived primarily in California, however, lived several years in Colorado before returning to California. She loved to travel and Hawaii was her favorite place to visit. Survived by her husband of 49 years, David Razo, Sr., three children, Davina Luz, Yvonne Razo-Titus (Todd) and David Razo, Jr (Sarah), grandchildren Nicholas, Jonathan, Christopher, Justin, Joshua, Kayla, Morgan, Gabriel, Andre and Mila, siblings Joe Velho (Mary), Patsy Pence, John Vargas and Judy Vargas and several nieces, nephews and close friends. In September, she will be a first time great-grandmother. Ann married David Razo, January 31, 1970, and they raised their children in Moss Landing and Prunedale, before settling in for retirement in Los Banos, CA. An ever thoughtful person, Ann enjoyed making gifts for family and friends such as beautiful photo albums, aprons, clothing and leather belts. Spending time with family was her most cherished activity. She will be remembered for many things, one will be her unique use of language. If you needed a “moochie”, she had one. If you couldn’t find that “thingamagig” or “whichahookie”, she knew where to find it. Her family knew she was the first to use words such as “whatchamacallit” and “weedwhacker”. And who could change the channel without the buzz? A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, March 9, 2:00 at the Four Seasons Clubhouse, 827 Auction Street, Los Banos.
