CANNABIS UPDATE: 8 APPLY FOR DISPENSARY LICENSES
APPLICANTS
FACE LENGTHY REVIEW BY CITY
STAFF AND CONSULTANTS
Staff Report
The process to bring at least one, possibly two cannabis dispensaries to Healdsburg is moving into its next stage, with the submission of eight applications for the coveted business licenses.
The applicants are currently in a period of evaluation by the city and HdL, the consultant engaged by the city to manage the process. A “letter of completeness” to the applicants is expected this week; it’s possible one or more of the applicants will not meet the city’s threshold for the licenses, and the list of eight will be reduced.
More than half of the cities in the county have already welcomed dispensaries to their jurisdictions—the exceptions to date being Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor and Healdsburg. Healdsburg’s reluctance to enter the market has faded in the last couple years, and the licensing of cannabis businesses is now underway. In April 2023, the council adopted a comprehensive cannabis policy and a competitive process for business licenses. Preparatory to the current process, the city approved a separate tax rate for cannabis businesses of up to 8%.
Along with the names of the applicants, their chosen location for a dispensary has also been announced. Although it is allowed for more than one applicant to choose the same location (though only one dispensary would be allowed at any given address), the list of applicants shows that each has zeroed in on a different location.
Three-Peat! Packers Go the Distance Again
HEALDSBURG’S BASEBALL TEAM SCORES RARE SPORTS SUCCESS
By Christian Kallen
The term “three-peat” is well known though rarely earned in sports. But the Healdsburg Prune Packers proved themselves in exclusive company by winning their third consecutive championship title in the California Collegiate League (CCL).
The entire series, as it is every year, is played in Southern California and not in the more hospitable atmosphere of the Packers’ Sonoma County— despite the fact that the Packers were once again the number-one seed in the championship series,
not least because of their winning the championship the last two years.
“The adversity that we felt going down there was pretty apparent,” said team GM and coach Joey Gomes, the day after that third game. “But, you know, we all kind of gathered together, and the message was, they have to play us on the field. The antics are going to be over once that umpire says, ‘Play ball.’”
Case in point: Though the games were broadcast on the CCL South YouTube channel, the commentators were from the Arroyo Seco Saints and, of all things, the Walnut Creek Crawdads. Ironically, the Packers had defeated the Crawdads just days earlier to win the Northern Division title.
Division Playoff
That Aug. 2 game for the division title was, as Gomes said, “a grind.” It clocked in at over four hours, an unheardof length in the majors these days, where the pitch clock has cut almost half an hour off every game. And it didn’t even go into extra innings, but was settled with a 10-7 score after the Crawdads top-of-theninth rally fell short.
The game started out close, but the home team Packers accumulated runs in the twos and threes to lead 8-1 at the end of seven. A turning point of a sort came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Ivan Brethowr—who had already walked and doubled—was hit by a pitch. A 93-mph pitch. In the head.
probably not out of malice. “It’s how players are training. Velocity makes money, not accuracy anymore.
So if you throw a hundred miles an hour, you’re gonna get paid. They don’t care if you throw it in a rectangle or not,” he said, referring to the strike zone.
The ball bounced off the big right fielder’s helmet as the Rec Park crowd groaned, but he shook it off and advanced to first.
The next time Brethowr came to the plate, in the bottom of the eighth inning, the score had narrowed to 8-4. With a runner on, the UC Santa Barbara slugger turned on a 3-2 pitch and sent it over the right field fence.
“A huge nail in the coffin home run,” said Gomes. “That sealed it, you know.”
ninth fell short, and the Packers headed for SoCal for their third championship series in a row.
Championship Series
The first game on Aug. 4 was played on Jackie Robinson Memorial Field near the Rose Bowl (the Hallof-Famer was a Pasadena native). It was a home game for the Arroyo Seco Saints, and they took advantage of it with a 7-3 win.
The Prune Packers took an early 3-0 lead. But in the fourth inning, Saints star Connor Bradshaw (Pepperdine) cleared the bases with a 4-run grand slam that turned out to be all the runs they needed.
Gomes said the increase in hit batters, and walks, is

On Saturday, Aug. 19, the expansive courtyard off Westside Road, surrounded by seven boutique winery tasting rooms, will be the site of the 11th annual La Cosecha Grand Tasting. The celebration will bring together most of the 20 wineries of the Mexican American Vintners Association (MAVA).
Though the annual MAVA event usually takes place in eastern Sonoma County or Napa, this year Aldina Vineyards hosts the grand tasting, and the accompanying art presentation, Latin music, Mexican foods and fundraising activities.
“We’re super excited
to host for the very first time,” said co-owner Monica Lopez. “A lot of the wineries within the MAVA group are actually Nava Valley-based, so I’m thrilled to have them come to the Sonoma County side.”
Lopez owns the company along with her brother, Francisco, but it’s the spirit of their parents, Al and Dina Lopez, that pervades the endeavor— and explains the name of the winery itself.
“Aldina Vineyards really started as a hobby project for my dad,” said Lopez during a tasting room visit recently. “They were the previous owners of Low Rider Magazine And when they sold the business, they knew that they wanted to retire in Northern California wine country.”

One of the key tenets in the Guiding Principles of the General Plan is for the City to strive to maintain a “Balance between resident and visitor needs” (2-A). This is also described, repeatedly, in the Land Use and Economic Development sections from the General Plan.
There is legitimate concern regarding Vertice’s marketing audience: ultra-luxury restaurant SingleThread advertises for dinners beginning at $425. We are concerned that the SingleThread story will repeat itself in both of these valued locations and, ultimately, exacerbate luxury visitor dining at the expense of local residents. The Raven Film Center and its predecessor, JCPenney’s, both served the “whole” community of Healdsburg over a span of 40 years.
Residents would appreciate and support Vertice continuing to provide uses that serve the Healdsburg community, not just the top 2%, or 5%, or 10% of wealthiest residents and visitors.
In closing, we acknowledge your hospitality innovations and your willingness to engage with the community. We look forward to meeting with you.

Hockey Trophy Celebrates ‘Team Foley’
STANLEY CUP AND A TEXAS STEAKHOUSE COME TO HEALDSBURG
Staff Report
Bill Foley firmly planted his personal flag in Healdsburg on Friday last, using the Stanley Cup as a magic talisman
to enchant residents, visitors and tourists with a championship promise fulfilled.
The Stanley Cup was on display at the Plaza gazebo at noon on Aug. 4, and before long a line of some 300 hockey fans had circled around the green for the opportunity to touch the silver monolith, hand their cellphone to a waiting staffer and have their photos taken
for posterity (or social media, whichever was closer to hand).
The Stanley Cup, a 135-year-old symbol of ice hockey excellence, is awarded to the National Hockey League champion team. It’s the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America. The 2023 NHL champion is the Vegas Golden Knights, new to
the league only in 2017 and owned by a consortium that includes Bill Foley. He promised the Cup in six years, and he delivered.
Another of Foley’s works opened its doors that same evening, with the Stanley Cup holding a place of honor at Goodnight’s Prime Steak and Spirits, at 119 Plaza St. The newest restaurant in Healdsburg looks like
nothing else—a Texasstyle steakhouse with a Wild West motif and a mural of larger-than-life gunfighters guarding the restrooms.
The last time a steakhouse opened in Healdsburg was late in 2010. That’s when Doug Keane’s Shimo Modern Steak premiered to great fanfare next to Healdsburg Bar and Grill. But Healdsburg wasn’t ready
then for the pricey menu, and it closed in a few months.
Ironically, Keane built his reputation on Cyrus, a truffle-heavy sensation at the Le Mars Hotel that closed in 2012 after a dispute with the hotel’s new owner—Bill Foley. While Keane’s resurrected Cyrus is thriving in Geyserville, Bill Foley has a trophy.

Hispanic Vintners
They ran the lifestyle magazine, which speaks to California’s Hispanic culture, for a decade. While it may seem a strange precursor to a wine business, they then did end up planting roots in wine country. They bought about 40 acres along Mark West Springs Road in the late 1990s and planted a hobby vineyard, primarily of cabernet sauvignon.
The rich red varietal was Al Lopez’s favorite, and he threw himself into the challenge, taking the highly-regarded viticulture program at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) to better manage his acreage.
At first the grapes were sold to other wineries, though Al Lopez “was always doing a garagiste barrel or two of his own wine,” said Monica Lopez. As it became a favorite among family

The process of identifying approved zones for a cannabis business resulted in a final map (available on the city’s cannabis portal at healdsburg.gov/cannabis). The areas exclude the downtown commercial zone and locations 500 feet from schools, youth centers and child care facilities, or 250 feet from public parks and libraries.
The applicants, and their respective identified locations, are as follows:

and friends, siblings Monica and Francisco Lopez decided that they wanted to create a wine label around the family Mark West estate, and Aldina Vineyards was born, named for their parents.
Even as they planned out how to grow the business with a tasting room storefront, the 2017 Tubbs fire swept down Mark West canyon, burning the family home and about 15% of their vineyards.
But the stage was set, and when the label debuted in 2018 it launched with a fouryear vertical release, of 2012-2016 estate-grown cabernet sauvignon.
The Aldina story reflects that of most of the MAVA members, who come from immigrant and farm working backgrounds. Some of them worked the fields
with their parents and were able to establish their own winery after years of hard work and dedication.
Several other MAVA wineries have achieved wide recognition, including Ceja and Robledo in Sonoma Valley. Lopez frankly discussed the disconnect between the people who work the fields in the wine industry and those who own most of the wineries.
“It’s unfortunate that we are only the labor force behind all of these wine labels, versus being the face of them,” she said. “There’s so few of us; that’s how MAVA came to be, coming together to have some representation.”
Acknowledging that “it might not be every Latino’s passion to also have a wine label,” Lopez said that for her, representation means having “the ability to grow and become successful in an industry that sometimes is not as forward
thinking.”
She clarified by saying, “Personally, I have felt welcomed in the industry; I've never felt otherwise. But I do think that it’s a little bit more of a struggle, you know, because we’re not as well known, and we don’t have big marketing dollars.
“But that’s true of any boutique winery, Latino or non-Latino, right?” she added.
Aldina shares a tasting room with two other small wineries, Dot and Westside, while other wineries, including Dan Kosta’s Convene, Smith Story, Montagne Russe and the Settings Wines, fill out the Bacchus Landing space. They will all be participating in the Aug. 19 La Cosecha Grand Tasting (“cosecha” means harvest), with Aldina as host.
This wine festival promises to bring over 15 Mexican American vintners together, where they will not only share their exquisite wines with
over 200 wine enthusiasts, but tell their stories of how they ultimately became winery owners.
Guests can expect Mexican delicacies by Oaxacan chef Octavio Diaz of Agave Restaurant, live entertainment from Carlitos Medrano y Sabor De Mi Cuba, a catrina art installation by Ricardo Soltero and
a silent auction. The silent auction will serve as a fundraiser, which will continue to provide MAVA with the funds to promote its members.

Many of these businesses already run dispensaries in Sonoma County. Sparc, for instance, currently has three, one in Sonoma, one in Santa Rosa and one in Sebastopol.
Jane has two locations, one on Highway 116 outside of Cotati, and one in the City of Santa Rosa. Mercy Wellness has a Cotati dispensary, as well as a downtown Santa Rosa dispensary. And Solful also has two, in Sebastopol and Santa Rosa.
Several of these companies have already begun public outreach asking for support from residents for their bids.
Mercy Wellness has a black van strategically located at their selected location, at the former DiVine Pizza at 20 Dry Creek Rd.
Jane has posted fliers in the downtown area, though their chosen location is a bit less visible, in the former Mill Street
Antiques space. Both have QR codes to enable passersby to access their websites for information and to log their support.
Other applicants may have similar outreach efforts. But at this point, the people they need to convince are city staff and
HdL contractors who will review their applications and, beginning late this month, start a multistep evaluation process, including background checks, financial evaluation, liability and indemnification, and zoning clearance.
It’s expected the interviews for the applicants that remain—a winnowing process is normal at this stage of the process—will take place in October.
“In order to ensure fairness and respect the competitive process,
applicant materials will be released and posted after the competitive scoring process is complete, and prior to City Council determination,” reads a notice on the city’s page devoted to the process, at Healdsburg. gov/cannabis.

Maison Brings Provençal Vibe to Healdsburg
NEW WINE BAR OFFERS INTERNATIONAL VARIETY IN SIMPLE SPACE
Chris Andrews
By
Healdsburg’s new wine bar, Maison, opened its doors in early June and quickly established its place in the order of things in town. Situated at 210 Healdsburg Ave., just north of the roundabout, Maison is without signage, but an inviting hand-painted sandwich board beckons pedestrians to drop in.
What is lovely about the Maison space is its simplicity, with an aesthetic evocative of the village wine bars one happens upon in Provence. The interior is spacious, sprinkled with roughhewn wood tables and bentwood chairs, and the lounge area up front is perfect for people watching and decompressing with a glass of pinot noir.
The vibe at Maison is pleasantly low-key, unpretentious and simple. There is an expansive wine list, of course, beer and sake, plus a few basic high-quality nibbles in the way of international cheeses, fancy tinned seafood, smoked salmon and caviar, all with artful accompaniments.
In a town surrounded by world-renowned wine appellations and infused with Michelin-star restaurants, opening a wine
bar was a bold move. But Maison’s trio of young and enthusiastic proprietors, Jade and Evan Hufford and Ryan Knowles, were up to the task.
This trio met as part of the opening team at the renowned SingleThread, all having previous stints at other fine dining establishments— both of the Huffords with Michael Mina in San Francisco and elsewhere, Knowles at Madrona Manor among others.
Despite their haute connections, Knowles noted, “Our interest was not in emulating the places we had worked, but rather in opening a wine bar perfect for hanging out with people in the neighborhood and with our friends in the industry. This had, in fact, been Jade and Evan’s dream for over a decade.”
Wine selections include a variety of reds and whites from familiar California appellations such as Santa Ynez, Sonoma Coast, Paso Robles, Napa Valley and Mendocino. Also of note is a generous mix of varietals from France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy and Spain, most not readily found in local wine shops.
Maison also collects one-of-a-kind California vintages from the ’70s and ’80s, primarily in the way of zins, cabs and pinot noirs. These scruffy bottles are sprinkled throughout the tasting room to pique interest.
Knowles hopes folks will not find their vast wine list daunting. “We enjoy conversing with everyone who comes in and hearing what varietals and labels they typically enjoy. From there we can direct them to options from our collection,” he said.
“We also encourage guests to try ‘side-byside tastings,’ where we pair one of our California varietals with a similar European wine,” he continued. “The goal is for
guests to enjoy a unique wine tasting experience from a familiar point of reference.”
For the jaded palates of local sommeliers and wine educators, it is inviting to have wines of this caliber readily available in the neighborhood, by the glass. Pours are usually a generous five ounces.
Building a following is always the big challenge with any new venture. But to their advantage, this trio has a cadre of
thirsty friends in the way of chefs, kitchen crew, bartenders, waiters and the like, who comprise a large percentage of Maison’s clientele. After a late-night shift, Maison is perfect for enjoying a drink, unwinding and shooting the breeze without a manager within earshot.
Though there is no place for pétanque courts out front, as one might see in Provence, here’s to hoping Maison considers adding a pool table
and a stack of games and cards at the end of the bar, perhaps some latenight croque monsieurs and the occasional acoustic guitarist. And they will soon need more tables and chairs because as word gets out, this locals’ wine bar is sure to be packed.

Library’s New ‘BiblioBox’ Debuts This Month
NEWS FROM THE LOCAL LIBRARY
By Jon Haupt
The Healdsburg Regional Library staff is recovering from our very busy summer reading programs this month, recharging and preparing for Back to School activities, as are many of you. This month, I’ll focus on reminding you about ongoing programs and services that you may have missed or may be interested to hear more about.
You may have seen the Sonoma County Library BiblioBus in the Twilight Parade, at Día de los Muertos or at another event. I’ve heard a few questions about it. This mobile library may be found throughout Sonoma County, providing services at a variety of locations. The 29-foot bus has many shelves of books, DVDs and other materials that you can
borrow, as well as free WiFi, giveaways, information about library programs, services and events provided on screens and flyers.
Lately, the bus has been making the rounds in Healdsburg at the Harvest Grove and Canyon Run apartment complexes, and we are working on visits to other sites as well. One of the most important purposes for the bus is to provide access to the library for people living in areas that are far away from our buildings—in parts of west Sonoma County, for example—and that effort will continue as well.
In addition to the BiblioBus and our own BiblioBike, we are pleased to roll out another helpful tool with our BiblioBox, an outdoor locker system at the library that will allow you to pick up requested items at any time, 24/7, day or night.
We know that sometimes people have a hard time getting to the library
during our open hours.
Some people have work and family commitments that prevent them from visiting; others have a hard time coming into the library building— there are so many possible reasons for this, from medical and health concerns to dogs and other pets. Whatever the reason, we expect that our BiblioBox will be very handy for many of our community members.
The BiblioBox will be operational starting on Aug. 14. In order to use it, you will make a request in our library catalog for books, DVDs or other items, just like you would’ve before. But when you go to select a location for pickup, you will choose between Healdsburg Library and Healdsburg Library Bibliobox. The latter will flag the item for our staff so that your items will be placed in a locker for you to pick up.

Sonoma County’s entry in this summer Shakespeare “fest” is The Comedy of Errors Healdsburg’s Raven Players return to West Plaza Park with a production running through Aug. 12.
Shakespeare purists beware as director Steven David Martin transplants the setting from ancient Greece to modern-day New Orleans, where the antics of two— count ’em—two sets of
twins, originally separated by shipwreck (of course), lead to accusations of theft, infidelity and demonic possession.
Ageon Jones (Dan Stryker) arrives in New Orleans, where he is promptly arrested and sentenced to death for trespassing. He explains to a wealthy Duke (Ron Smith) that he has entered the forbidden city in search of his child and servant, who were separated from their respective twins and Ageon’s wife in a shipwreck and who themselves have come to New Orleans in search of their siblings.
Antiphola of Syracuse (Monique Scott) and her servant, Dromia of Syracuse (Katie Watts-Whitaker), soon find themselves mistaken for Antiphola of New Orleans (Heather Berger) and Dromia
of New Orleans (Mary Watts-Sparks). Confusion abounds as a pair of brothers (Matt Farrell, Declan Hackett), a goldsmith (Bohn Connor) and a courtesan (Troy Thomas Evans) engage with the pairs, often confusing one set for the other. Leave it up to a witch doctor (Nicholas Augusta) and a cat o’nine tails-wielding Abbess (Tika Moon) to set everyone straight.
A kitchen sink is all that is missing from director Martin’s take on the Shakespeare comedy. One doesn’t usually see references to Star Wars Indiana Jones The Wizard of Oz and Barbie (!) folded into a Shakespeare show or hip-hop and rap lyrics worked into the dialogue, but there you have it. It’s a silly show, but that is the intention here, so you wind
to pick your items up, you will come to the BiblioBox with your library card, scan it and enter your PIN. A locker will pop open, providing you with your items. Once you take them out and close the door, your
transaction is complete.
Since you could pick up your item any time of day, even at 3am, the pickup window is shorter. Unlike the seven day window for regular requests, BiblioBox items need to be picked up within three

up smiling and laughing with it and not at it. The cast is obviously having fun, and that sense of fun permeated the audience. The setting allows for some great costuming by Jeanine Gray, and the set by Julie Raven-Smart nicely facilitates the door
slamming inherent in a classic farce. Grab a chair and a blanket (it can get chilly when the sun goes down), pack a picnic and some beverages, and head to West Plaza Park for a couple of hours of silly summertime diversion.
Heads up. Watch out for flying beads.
‘The Comedy of Errors’ runs through Aug. 12 at West Plaza Park, 10 North St., Healdsburg. Thurs–Sat, 7:30 pm. Free. 707.433.6335 raventheater.org.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.
Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Three-Peat!
to a “neutral” diamond, Sparky Anderson Field in the San Fernando Valley.
UC Santa Barbara rising junior Michael Rice got the win with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings, while his teammates scrambled for three “small-ball” runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead and eventually win, 5-4.
Then the season came down to Game Three, Sunday afternoon in the Valley. Caden Bugarske (Concordia U) got the start, and though he only allowed a single run in his three innings of work, he gave up five hits and walked two. So Gomes went to the bullpen and called in Rice, for his second game in as many days.
Rice kept the Saints at bay, followed by Grant Cherry (Long Beach State), who got the win. They allowed the Packers to start piling up runs and building an 8-2 lead going into the eighth inning. Vacaville’s Hunter Dorraugh (a rising senior at San Jose State) drove in three runs on two hits, while Connor Charpiot (Long Beach State) and Peyton Schulze (UC Berkeley) each got three hits.
With their hopes slipping away, the mood was somber in the Saints dugout, to say nothing of the announcers’ booth, until once again Bradshaw gave the Arroyo Seco fans a chance to cheer by unloading his
second home run in the bottom of the eighth. The three-run blast closed the gap to three runs, but the score stayed 8-5 through the ninth as Windsor’s Gary Hall (San Jose State) retired the batters in order,
The victorious Prune Packers piled up near the mound to celebrate their third straight CCL championship. Rice was named Pitcher of the Tournament, Dorraugh won the MVP award, and the team, champions all, celebrated all the way home on the eight-hour bus ride.
Aftermath
“What’s worth noting is that literally one of the country's best baseball teams resides in Sonoma County,” said Gomes proudly the next day, as he watched over the batting school he runs in Santa Rosa.
“I just really want to thank Sonoma County,” he continued. “I mean, it was like every year this thing grows and grows and grows. Just to have the community support the Prune Packers, just to see the number of maroon hats with a P on ’em around town, and hearing people say, ‘Did we win yesterday?’”
And with a ready laugh, he added, “I really think now, if you don't know who the Healdsburg Prune Packers are, you live under a rock.”
