$28 MILLION GRANT TO SMART RAIL CLOSES GAP IN FUNDING

Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit announced last week it had received a $28 million grant through the Federal Railroad Administration that will be allotted to build out the rail system from Windsor to Healdsburg, a 5.5-mile extension that brings the regional commuter rail system closer to reality for Healdsburg residents. The grant was part of a larger $32 million grant awarded through the Federal Railroad Administration, consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement grants. The rest of the grant is earmarked for the replacement of older, high-emission freight locomotives with lower-emission, environmentally sustainable locomotives, officials said. The announcement adds impetus to the city’s scheduled community workshop to discuss the SMART commuter rail service coming to Healdsburg and a potential location for an in-city depot. That community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 19, from 6-7:30pm at the Healdsburg Senior Center, 133 Matheson St. The Oct. 19 meeting will be another chance for residents to weigh in on the potential location of a passenger rail depot for Healdsburg. Although the city, in 1997, conducted hearings and produced recommendations to position the station at the former train depot on Hudson Street, the city council

Wine Tasting from Plaza to Parking Lot HEALDSBURG CRUSH THIS WEEKEND, WINE & FOOD EXPERIENCE NEXT MAY By Christian Kallen
Even as the city prepares for Sunday’s Healdsburg Crush—a Plaza event to “taste limited production Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wines from over 60 of the top California wine producers”—the city council on Oct. 2 agreed to allow the much larger Healdsburg Food & Wine Affair to continue for three more years at the West Plaza Parking Lot. Healdsburg Crush, formerly known as Pinot on the River, is produced by— and benefits—Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma-Marin, whose local Healdsburg club is in need of significant remodeling. The event takes place in the Plaza from noon to 4pm on Sunday, Oct. 15, with a $125 ticket price. While there are several VIP events, the centerpiece of the Crush is
the Sunday open-air wine tasting at the Plaza, one of a relatively few large events in the Plaza this year along with February’s Lunar New Year, April’s Earth Day Climate Fest, a Juneteenth Celebration and December’s Merry Healdsburg event. Contrast that to the Healdsburg Wine & Food Experience, which began in 2022 and which is scheduled for a third year on May 17-19, 2024. More than 270 wineries and a handful of distilleries are expected to participate, along with multiple food vendors who will prepare tastes and dishes for the Grand Tasting to be held on Saturday, May 18—not in the Plaza, but at the large city parking lot on the west side of Foss Creek where the Saturday Farmers’ Market takes place. Both wine tastings pay special-event fees to the city, though the Healdsburg Crush fees are significantly lower since it is a local nonprofit organization. The HW&FE is a non-resident commercial event; it paid approximately $5,500 in fees for this year’s event, plus a
refundable security deposit of $5,000. “As of now, the Boys & Girls Club has paid roughly $860 in fees for this year’s Healdsburg Crush event, in addition to a refundable security deposit of $1,250,” said Matt Milde, the city’s event coordinator.
of the meeting SD Media had gained the council’s backing for a three-year contract—though it had to commit to higher fees than it had asked for and was put on the defensive for its claim that the event “celebrates the makers behind the magic” while largely ignoring the farmworker community that drives the industry. Most, though not all, of the criticism came from in-room public comment, when six residents argued that the event was a private event held on public property, priced to exclude Healdsburg residents. Tickets to the Grand Tasting were $250 in 2023. They said the event had an outsized impact on the town on the day of the Grand Tasting but brought little benefit to local businesses, gave lip service to farmworker charity, and had a too-cozy relationship with the Sonoma County Grape Growers Foundation and the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce. Only one resident, Jim Heid of CraftWork, voiced his support of the event. Calling it “a lovely event”
Promotion for Profit
The HW&FE is not driven by a nonprofit, as are nearly all of the other downtown events, but by SD Media Productions, a privately held event producer led by Steve Dveris. Over the past 30 years he has created a half-dozen highticket-price promotional food-and-wine events, from Aspen to Austin and from Pebble Beach to South Beach, Florida. Dveris was at the Oct. 2 city council meeting to make the case for a threeyear contract with the city to continue the HW&FE at the same location, asking for the multi-year contract to line up long-term sponsorship partners and establish continuity and reliability in the majorevent sphere. While it wasn’t an easy or quick process, by the end

at which he saw many locals, Heid said, “It was a celebration of Healdsburg, and we need to celebrate Healdsburg.” CraftWork partnered with the HW&FE and served as the staff ’s base during their time in town. Tyra Benoit, on the other hand, called the event “a block party of epic proportion” that would better be held at a private location like Bacchus Landing or Montage; Valerie White said that the people who were “the backbone of wine industry were completely excluded from the celebration”; and Merrilyn Joyce called it “a near-perfect symbol of Healdsburg’s growing reputation as a playground for the rich.” Benoit also called out the Healdsburg Tourism Improvement District, a Chamber of Commerce initiative, for cutting funding for the local communityserving nonprofit Corazon Healdsburg from $15,000 to $7,500, while giving a hefty $24,000 grant to the HW&FE. ➝ Wine Tasting, 6
the 12-year-olds, who had also arrived on scene. The juveniles said they had been approached by a young man in a white t-shirt and jeans who appeared to have been drinking. He tried to lure them into his truck but they refused, which prompted another juvenile at the park to call police. The family members pointed out a nearby 2003 gold Chevy Tahoe with a young man inside, still stopped on University Street near the Grant Avenue intersection. When officers approached the vehicle to order the driver to step outside, the man fled southbound on University Street at a high rate of speed. In so doing his truck hit one of the family members, a 41-year-old female, who was taken to the hospital for her injuries. ➝ Big Trouble, 6

October Library News FALL BRINGS AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES TO LOCAL BRANCH By Jon Haupt
monthly—on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30am and on the third Saturday at 11:30am. Be sure to come on Oct. 21 this year for our Saturday offering of fun activities presented in Spanish. These are good events for families, even for those just learning Spanish who want a fun opportunity for music and play. Now that school is in full swing, teen events are back as well. Something is offered every Wednesday after school, starting at 1:30pm, right after early release for the middle school. In addition to gaming every first Wednesday, we also have a Smash Brothers gaming tournament that same day each month, at 3pm.
On Oct. 18, we offer our popular monthly Universal Yums experience with snacks from different places around the world. A week later, on Oct. 25, we’re planning a “Scary Movie with Hot Cocoa and Apple Cider.” We will make sure it’s not too scary, though. We hope you or a teen you know will take advantage of these weekly activities.
Tween Time
Our tweens (fourth–sixth graders) can look forward to our Tween Hangouts on the month’s second Monday afternoons. On Oct. 9, we had our monthly Seeds and Reads event: “Explore Your World…” under a microscope. This was a fun opportunity to learn about objects in our world from a
new angle. The next Seeds and Reads date is Nov. 13, open to all in grades K–6. On Oct. 16, it’s back to tweens-only with an opportunity to do yoga with Ozlem. Oct. 23 will feature a tweens-only version of the Universal Yums program. These two programs follow our regular schedule of Mondays at 3:30pm. Our celebration of Latin American Roots, coinciding with Latin American Heritage Month, continues in October with several more events, including a Lotería Game Night for all ages on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6pm. Our staff—and the BiblioBus and BiblioBike staff—will be at an upcoming labor force workers’ service fair on Sunday, Oct. 22 and at the annual Día de Muertos celebration on
Oct. 29. We hope to see you there.

Hounds Help Huskies to Big Win TURNOVERS TURN INTO SCORES AS HEALDSBURG FALLS, 40-7 By Christian Kallen
Any game that begins with the opposing team scoring two touchdowns without running an offensive play is not off to a good start. That’s what happened Friday night at Rec Park, as the visiting Fortuna Huskies scored twice on
turnovers—an interception and a fumble—to rack up a 13-0 score before the first hot dog was sold. Healdsburg received the opening kickoff, then quarterback Nova Perrill II’s first attempted pass was picked off by Fortuna’s outside linebacker Quinn Hall, who raced 27 yards back to the goal line for the first score of the night. Healdsburg managed to drive downfield after receiving the following kickoff, but this time Hall scooped up a fumble and returned it 84 yards for
another score. Only one of the extra-point kicks was good, but it hardly made a difference as Fortuna scored twice more in the second quarter and had a comfortable 27-0 lead at the half. The Greyhounds’ offense was unable to mount a sustained attack all night, until the final minutes of the game when Alexander Harms— returning to the lineup after a two-week injury hiatus—took it in from the 6-yard line after a 24-yard run by Perrill, his longest
of the night. But by that point the Huskies had scored their fill, and the 7 points were just a dent in the 40-7 final score. Perrill passed for 86 yards and ran for another 30, but he also threw two interceptions and fumbled twice, accounting for four out of five Greyhound turnovers. Healdsburg’s leading rusher was Tyler Swanson with 45 yards on seven carries. Harms managed only 9 yards on 10 carries throughout the game, his six-yard scoring run
the longest of the night. But Fortuna’s Jake Houseworth finished with a team-best 147 yards on 10 carries, including a score on a 50-yard TD run to end the second quarter. Hayden Mariani was Healdsburg’s leading receiver, with three receptions for 72 yards, while on the defensive side of the line he made an interception off Fortuna’s quarterback Kameron Elam, and picked up two fumbles as well. Defensively, Nathaniel Rowland hung tough
for the Hounds, making a team-leading six tackles, with two assists and a sack. This Friday the Greyhounds’ NBL-Oak league season begins with a trip up Highway 101 to Ukiah to face the Wildcats (4-3 overall, with a league win against Maria Carrillo last weekend). Next home game is against Maria Carrillo on Oct. 20, with the Oct. 27 meeting against St. Vincent de Paul providing the season’s final home game.
Tennis Girls Aided by Second Generation Coach IN SCHEDULED MEETS, #2 DHIMAN IS A RELIABLE WINNER Staff Report
An alumni student and an alumni parent have been filling in the coaching duties with the current Healdsburg Girls Tennis Team. And the girls couldn’t ask for better training. Vikram Johnson, alumni of Healdsburg High (2021) and for four years the #1 boys tennis singles player, and his father Scott Johnson, now in his seventh year of coaching tennis, both helped train the girls team this fall. “Vikram was reluctant to help with the team,
because he is somewhat shy and does not like to talk in front of groups of people,” said Scott Johnson. “But he agreed to fill in when I was out of town at the beginning of the season.” Johnson cocoaches the girls team with Mary Beth Chandler and her daughter Margot. “The team members immediately took to his coaching. He was able to communicate with the team members in ways that Mary Beth and I could not,” Johnson said. He said the players “became more motivated, improved significantly and had more fun.” Eventually, though, Vikram Johnson had to return to UC Davis to continue his own college tennis career, despite requests from the girls that he stay
on into the season. However, said his father, “Now that he has returned to Davis, the official coaches will have to carry on.” Scott Johnson, a lifelong tennis player himself, called the sport “a shared love of my family.” He encouraged his own children to take up the sport— a little too well, perhaps. “Vikram has been a far better tennis player than me for several years, and now it turns out that he is the better coach, too,” he said.
Recent Matches
The Healdsburg High girls tennis team is in the midst of its fall season, with a handful of North BayOak League rivals lined up twice a week until Oct. 24. But even that’s better than the three matches in one week the girls faced
with the fall 2023 girls tennis team, which he helped train.

YOUNG COACH Vikram Johnson, a tennis player for Healdsburg High until 2021, poses
recently, thanks to an early season cancellation due to air quality. From Tuesday Oct. 3 to Thursday Oct. 5, the Greyhound girls faced Analy, Ukiah and Cardinal Newman at the HHS campus, in a series of after-schoolhour battles that tested the mettle of the young team, producing strong games across the board. The Oct. 3 match was a close one, with victories in #2 singles (Mehan Dhiman) and both #1 doubles (Ruby Leffew / Isabel Lickey) and #3 doubles (Sana Katsuki / Kathleen Arriaga) for a 4-3 Analy win. The match could have gone the other way, with what coach Mary Beth Chandler called a “close nail-biting tiebreak at #3 Singles for the second set,” which Amelia Wickersham could not pull off, falling to Annika Topham. The next day the delayed match with Cardinal Newman took place, sandwiched midweek on a Wednesday. The Cardinals won all of their matches except #2 singles, when once again Dhiman brought home with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Finally Thursday arrived, the third match in as many days against quality opponents. This time it was Ukiah on the courts, and the Greyhounds took three of the four singles matches, with only #1 player Isabel Smith falling to Martiza Jacobs.
NUMBER ONE Senior Isabel Smith has been Healdsburg
High’s #1 tennis competitor during the 2023 fall season. As well as #2 Dhiman over Joni Johnson, #3 Wickersham and #4 Clair Barry dispatched their Ukiah opponents, Jennifer Fuentes and Tahtiana James, respectively. The evening ended with a 4-3 margin for Ukiah.
“Whew!” was C handler’s sentiment after the threematch midweek set. “Lots o f g o o d e n e r g y, s o m e tears.” Matches next week include Windsor, on Oct. 20, and Rancho Cotate, on Oct. 21.

Tiburon is no slouch when it comes to great dining—The Caprice and Sam’s Anchor Cafe are favorites—and The Lodge boasts its own top-notch restaurant, the Tiburon Tavern. Its menu sources
from local farms and vendors, and boasts an extensive wine, craft beer and handcrafted cocktail list. The Sauteed Shishito Peppers—mild, with a sweet and slightly smoky flavor, occasionally delivering a spicy kick—are a wonderful start. Ditto the Classic Steamed Mussels served with a white wine lemon-garlic sauce. The Grilled Rib Eye Steak is
a showstopper—perfectly cooked medium-rare and elevated with a rich red wine shallot reduction. And the accompanying baked potato and Brussels sprouts ensure a wellrounded dish. Ending on a high note, the Chef ’s Special, Mahi Mahi, is a tropical treat. Grilled and placed atop grilled potatoes, the dish is adorned with a vibrant mango salsa

HARVEST TIME IN SONOMA
Despite climate and global warming concerns, this summer in Sonoma County was relatively cool if measured by the late onset of grape harvests. A few days of late-summer heat in the 90s helped bring sugar levels up, and
predicted rains—not good for late grapes—have growers scrambling to bring in crops. In Sonoma County, grape growing and winemaking is big business. Sonoma County produces about 6% of the wine grown in California. Beginning in the 1800s, California’s oldest premium winery and longest continuously operated winery, Buena Vista and Gundlach-Bundschu, respectively, began production in Sonoma Valley. The county’s rugged mountains, Pacific Ocean coastline and valley drainages provide a variety of growing conditions and
soil types. Soil type, climate, topography, air drainage and slope orientation all contribute to “terroir,” the French and English term for the environmental characteristics that create unique flavors in food or wine. Fun facts: Wines designated with an AVA (American Viticultural Area) must have 85% content from that AVA. Sonoma County is divided up into 19 AVAs. The county’s viticultural areas, alphabetically, are: Alexander Valley, Bennett Valley, Carneros-Sonoma, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Fort Ross-Seaview, Fountaingrove District, Green
Valley, Knights Valley, Moon Mountain, Northern Sonoma, Petaluma Gap, Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak, Rockpile, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Valley and West Sonoma Coast. Approximately 60 varieties of grapes are grown in the county, but they are dominated by six varietals comprising 90% of production. Mainstay varietals as a percentage of county production are: Chardonnay (32%), Pinot Noir (23%), Cabernet Sauvignon (19%), Sauvignon Blanc (7%), Zinfandel (5%) and Merlot (4%).
the event on May 15-21 of this year, only two did receive grants, while the third organization, listed as “El Corazon,” does not exist—and Corazon Healdsburg received no support from the event. The benefit to Healdsburg came down to the rental fee charged for the parking lot, which was proposed to roll in at $6,000 the first year, $8,000 the second and $10,000 the third. How those numbers were arrived at initially was unclear, but City Manager Jeff Kay
and Councilmember David Hagele came up with a formula that charged each lost parking space in the community lot for the four days of the event— including setup and takedown—at the same rate the city charges restaurants for parklets. Parklets are parking spaces converted to retail in the wake of the pandemic. Extrapolating from the city’s fee of $1.50 per square foot of parking per month, Kay came up with a figure of between $2,000
and $5,000 a day for lost parking. After more than an hour of the meeting’s comments, discussion, haggling and negotiation, the fee was settled at $10,000 a year, with that charge going to support Healdsburg infrastructure improvements— specifically to the parking lot itself where the event would take place. While Herrod held out for the one-year contract, the other four council members agreed to the three-year contract, recognizing that with the
construction of the Foley Community Pavilion and even the possible SMART station, the long-range suitability of the West Plaza Parking Lot for events was uncertain.
lot at the southeast corner of Mason and Fitch streets. The suspect, since identified as 24-year-old Luis Joel Flores Gaspar from Windsor, was taken to a local hospital pending medical clearance, prior to being booked at Sonoma County Jail. Gaspar was then booked on eight felony charges with enhancements including attempted kidnapping, attempted murder, driving while intoxicated, hit and run and evasion, and a misdemeanor charge of
obstructing a peace officer. He remains in custody with $1 million bail. His first court appearance was Oct. 10, with Superior Court Judge Troye Kendall Shaffer presiding. The family member who was struck by Gaspar’s vehicle received treatment at a local hospital for a fractured elbow. No one inside the residence at 444 Mason St. at the time of the collision was injured. The structure sustained considerable damage and is now uninhabitable.

Council Debate
Councilmember Chris Herrod was sharply critical of the event for not reflecting what he called “Healdsburg values” and skeptical of the organization’s claims of benefiting the community. “It’s sending a message of us-and-them,” he
said. “Philanthropy seems to be sort of a sidecar here.” He advocated for a oneyear contract, instead of the three years on the table. Councilmember Ron Edwards noted that of three organizations that the HW&FE promised to support with donations from

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https:// www.altisource.com/LoginPage.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2023-00682-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (877)-518-5700, or visit this internet
website https://www.realtybid.com/, using the file number assigned to this case 2023-00682-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.AUCTION. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 112889-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.
