Summertime Cycling

BY CURT HENTSCHKE

Welcome, August!

So, are you slathering on a slew of sunscreen before summer cycling? Super. As a skin cancer survivor, I’m a strong proponent of all manner of sun protection: solar sleeves, sunscreen, neck gaiters, sunglasses and early-morning rides. A real cool thing—get it? cool?—about the sleeves and gaiters is that when it starts heating up, you just doff them, soak them, wring ‘em out, then re-don them. Wonderfully refreshing.

I recently returned from one of my frequent forays into SoCal. What especially stood out this trip were the multitudinous amounts of electric bicycles scooting up, down and along the roads. For obvious reasons, I used to call these bikes “cheaters;” however, I have since changed my pedal-assist point of view. Anything that gets riders out there is a good thing!

Do you need a fun little diversion for the kiddos (and the kiddos at heart) this month? On Aug. 20, the South County Railroaders will be bringing back their Garden Railroad Tour. By riding your bicycle to the various homes to view the amazing layouts, you combine my two favorite forms of transportation: bikes and trains!
