Homelessness, the armed forces and drug policy were some of the items discussed at a town hall meeting Tuesday with Jimmy Panetta, the Democratic representative for the 20th congressional district. Panetta was introduced to the packed room at the county administration building by Jaime De La Cruz, chairman of the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. “Jimmy Panetta is a gentleman and a personal friend of mine,” said De La Cruz. “When he was out there campaigning, he was actually walking door-to-door. Thank you Jimmy for coming to San Benito County.” The town hall was moderated by Kristina Chavez-Wyatt, executive director of the San Benito County Business Council. Questions were limited to two minutes. The junior congressman looked engaged and confident as he fielded questions on topics ranging from immigration, affordable housing and the homeless population to climate change and cannabis. Resident James Parker told Panetta his son recently joined the army and would likely be deployed next year. “The question I have as a parent and with you being on the Armed Services Committee,” began Parker. “How do we know he’s got the resources he needs and that he’s going to be okay?”

While Californians never experienced complete darkness and only got to see a partial solar eclipse—the path of totality ran along a 70-mile wide path just north of the state from Oregon to South Carolina, enthusiasm for the celestial event remained high. “This is a once in a lifetime thing—one of those bucket list things,” said Arias, tears forming in his eyes. “I just wish

Lucky Supermarket in Hollister just made it easier for shoppers to get up and go. The grocery store at 291 McCray Street is the site of two new electric car charging stations. The evGo model is one of the fastest charging models out there and can charge vehicles in just 30 minutes—a perfect amount of time for customers to do some grocery shopping. The Hollister location is the 8th Lucky Supermarket store to get an electric vehicle charging station. The company started installing charging stations at their stores in 2015. So far, the company, which includes Lucky and SaveMart stores, have 33 charging stations in 15 cities across California in Northern Nevada—31 fast charging stations and two regular charging stations. The Fremont location is home to a prototype electric vehicle charger, which is not available to the general public yet, but can be used by automakers in the region to test future generation vehicles on it. Next on the list are stores in San Jose, Sand City and San Bruno. “This really marks the growing trend for electric cars. This is where we are all heading,” said Greg Gilliam, the Hollister store manager. California is home to the largest number of electric vehicles in the country.

San Benito County residents gathered Saturday over coffee and cookies to get the scoop on Gavilan College. Dr. Kathleen Rose, college president and superintendent, presided over the informal gathering at Mars Hill Coffeeshop. Of particular concern to the locals in attendance was the continued lack of a college satellite campus in Hollister. Rose said Gavilan College planned to conduct a feasibility study to see if the community would support a general obligation school bond measure in November 2018. The study, which could start as soon as this week, will be a telephone survey of a randomized sample of the population. Measure E, a facilities improvement bond that voters approved in 2004 helped Gavilan College purchase a 75-acre property, referred to as Fairview Corners on Fairview Road near the Ridgemark Golf Club and Resort in Hollister. The lot was purchased as a potential campus site. But after more than ten years, no construction has taken place. “The development has been ongoing ever since,” Rose said. “It’s taken 10 years to get the incidental take permit for the tiger salamander, which allows us to be cleared to do initial building on the property.” While Rose said the college is in continuous conversation with Morgan Hillbased Dividend Homes about the next phase of development on the property, funding is still an obstacle. “The [California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office] requires enrollments for buildups,” Rose said. “Five hundred full-time equivalent students in order to be

New wine room coming to Hollister CITY LEADERS APPROVE ABC LIQUOR LICENSE Nicholas Preciado Reporter

The Hollister City Council approved an ABC liquor license for the upcoming Epicenter Wine Room in downtown Hollister. According to the staff report, San Andreas Beverage Company, LLC applied for a winegrower type two license. The new wine tasting spot will be located at 620 San Benito Street, Suite A. The city council Monday also approved a portion of Monterey Street to temporarily shut down throughout the school year for San Benito High School dances and events. The high school requested the temporary street closure from the city council in previous years. According to the staff report, this will the high school to have better security at school functions and prevents cruising and loitering of non-students around the area.4 The street closure will stretch from Palmtag Drive to Nash Road from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the following dates: Friday September 1 (Freshman Reception Dance), Saturday October 21 (Homecoming Dance), Saturday December 2 (Winter Dance), Saturday January 27 (Homecoming Dance), Saturday February 10 (Valentine’s Dance) and Saturday March 10 (MORP Dance). San Benito High School notified impacted residents. Council members approved an amendment to a site lease agreement for a cell tower on cityowned property at 420 Hill Street. The city originally entered into a contract for the cell tower with SMR of California, Inc, also known as Nextel Communications in 1997.

COMING SOON The location of a former ladies apparel shop at 620 San Benito Street will be transformed into a destination wine room in the heart of Hollister’s downtown district. The city council Monday approved an ABC alcohol license for the site. The amendment applies to American Tower Asset Sub, LLC, the successor to the original lessee Nextel Communications. The amendment changes the original rent of $1,200 a month to $3,630.69 a month and is subject to a six percent increase each year. Total revenue expected over the initial five-year term is around $217,841.40, not accounting for the six percent annual increase. The city will also receive a one-time payment of $100,000. American Tower Asset Sub, LLC also agreed agreed to share 50 percent of all revenue

obtained from any rent received from sub lessees or licensee who use the property for communication purposes. The amended agreement officially commences on October 1 of this year and expires October 1, 2022. However, the staff report notes that American Tower Asset Sub, LLC will have the opportunity to renew the lease up to eight, five-year renewal terms. At Monday’s meeting, the council approved a job description and salary range for the position of Human Resources Technician I in the Human Resources department.

They also approved the recruitment process for the positions of HR Analyst and HR Manager. Administrative Services Director Brett Miller explained the department would open up three positions, but would only hire one candidate. “We wanted to open up all three positions, have people apply and then pick the best candidate and fit them in the right category that we feel is most appropriate and best fit for the city,” Miller said. Both Hollister council members and San Benito County supervisors approved sending out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new trash and

recycling contract this week. The San Juan Bautista City Council approved the RFP process at their August 15 meeting. San Benito County, the City of Hollister and the City of San Juan Bautista are part of a joint franchise agreement with Recology that’s set to expire June 30, 2018. Both Hollister and the county included an amendment in their approval that would award points to any operators who would consider establishing a local yard in the county. Currently, Recology operates out of a facility in Gilroy, which is why a local yard wasn’t made mandatory.

Engineering and Math),” Marshall said. Despite the students’ eager anticipation, cloudy skies obstructed their view of the eclipse. After a few minutes, the kids were ushered back inside to watch the solar eclipse on a NASA livestream. While the astronomical event unfolded before their eyes on the projector screen, the students were awestruck. “They are super excited,” Ferreira said. “On Friday we front loaded some information and talked about what was going to happen. Then they got to experience that.” Ferreira said the students viewed photos from her friends in Tennessee and Oregon to see what the eclipse looked like in the path of totality. “Overall, they were excited, despite not experiencing the eclipse,” Ferreira said. The next total solar eclipse to pass over the continental United States, according to Astronomy.com, will occur on April 8, 2024.

fiddling with homemade viewing gadgets made of cardboard, down below under a blanket of fog, students sported NASAapproved solar sunglasses to watch what they could of the eclipse at San Juan Elementary School in San Juan Bautista. “The kids are very excited,” said Dr. Elizabeth Cord, the school principal. “It’s going to be at least 10 more years before we get a really good eclipse here. They’re excited. They’ve been learning about it since last week.” About 150 students took part in special solar eclipse viewing events at the school, said Cord. Teachers Teri Marshall and Jayne Ferreira led their fourth grade students out into the school quadrangle to try and get a good view of the solar eclipse. Several kids watched the skies through pinholes punched through cereal boxes. “We decided it would be a great event to get kids excited about science and STEM (Science, Technology,

considered an education center. Once you get to 1,000 students it becomes a larger status and you can get more money from the state. With continued enrollment comes continued funding from the state, which increases our ability to add to facilities onsite.” In lieu of that, Gavilan College has to look for other funding. “You can build a campus starting with an education center and build out from there to be able to support this community as it grows,” Rose said. “That’s the vision. Until then, we continue doing what we do at the Briggs Building and all the pockets of noncredit to pathway programs we have. We also continue our partnership with San Benito High School as we move forward with content that makes sense.” Hollister resident Ruth Erickson asked about Gavilan College’s involvement with

a proposed technology, education and learning center, commonly referred to as the TEL center. At a San Benito County Board of Supervisors meeting earlier this year, the TEL center was estimated to cost $47.5 million. Rose said she’d be part of a TEL center advisory board comprised of representatives from San Benito County, San Benito High School and the cities of Hollister and San Juan Bautista. “We’ll continue to look at what we can do to support resources at the library,” Rose said. As conversation shifted to the Briggs Building, one resident asked if the planned 400 block development nearby would impact student parking. Gavilan staff said even though there are 143 parking spaces in the building, some students already have to park elsewhere.

In a phone call Tuesday, City Manager Bill Avera said the 400 block is located in what’s known as the Downtown Parking District. “If you’re in this geographical area downtown, you’re not required to have onsite parking,” Avera said. “In this case, the whole reason why it was constructed to begin with was to support development of the 400 block.” Rose said Gavilan would continue to have a presence in the Briggs Building. “We’ve been in the Briggs Building for 20 years and we’ll continue to offer instruction there as long as the community makes sense to do so,” Rose said. “We do know Hollister will be a place where education needs will continue to grow. As plans continue for development of the 400 block, we’ll continue to watch.”

OPINION QUESTION OF THE WEEK

The Hollister City Council recently approved a dozen cannabisrelated businesses to operate within city limits. How do you feel about this new industry setting up shop in Hollister? How should future revenue and tax money be spent? Mary Zanger: The time is here to recognize the legality of the cannabis industry and to cooperate with it as it serves our citizens. Hopefully instead of government budget shortfalls and budget cuts to needed services as in the past we see adequate budget funds for nutrition programs, for our schools and for the library. Reno Fidel Rodriguez: So have any of you seen statistics on what is going on in Colorado and where they have already legalized marijuana? I would recommend you do some research and then comment. And don't think for one minute they are doing this to help the community and Hollister. It's all about how much money they will be making. They are going to destroy this town. Mark my word there is nothing good that is going to come out of this. Nancy Jewett-Serrano: I think it's great! I am hoping for a job opportunity here in town. I don't understand many people's fear of cannabis. It has so many health benefits and is safer than alcohol. Bring it on! Erik Melchor Gonzalez: Awesome, I hope with all the tax money the city gets they build a four-lane highway. Ruth Erickson: Tax revenue from marijuana should be spent on road works. The scheme could be called pot for potholes! David Crandall: There should be more than one dispensary. It does not seem fair for one company to have a monopoly on walk-in

business. Keith Snow: The way the item was approached, it could’ve been handled in a more professional manner. The location is good. But they will do whatever they want with the money anyway. They have not said how much revenue they will be making yet. It should be more open to the public. Maybe use it towards more firefighters, police officers, youth programs or some kind of community pool or family-friendly amusement park.

The Question of the Week was distributed in an email and posted on the Hollister Free Lance Facebook page Monday, August 21. Thank you to all who contributed comments.

No to new Gavilan College bond measure The Gavilan College Board of Trustees are considering putting another bond before the voters of the district in 2018. At the August 8 board meeting the trustees approved an agreement with True North Research Inc. to provide a general obligation bond measure pre-election survey. I have always been a supporter of educational issues at all levels. However, I have also always believed very strongly that all elected officials must abide by the law to earn the trust of the voters that elected them. With the previous bond (Measure E) the Gavilan Board of Trustees violated Prop 39 by illegally spending bond funds to set up the South Bay Public Safety Consortium (the Academy) at the satellite site in Coyote Valley. Because Administration of Justice was not included in the bond, spending bond funds on Police Training Facilities was a clear violation of Prop 39. Before a vote, Prop 39 bond measures must list the specific projects to be funded. The South Bay Public Safety Consortium was never on the list of specific projects presented and approved by the voters. The evidence that Prop 39 was violated, I believe, is overwhelming. Because of the controversy over the misuse of Measure E bond funds, convincing the voters to support another bond will be a very difficult task. Aurelio Zuniga

San Benito County has been waiting for a Gavilan College campus to be built here for years. The college started here in Hollister as San Benito College and moved to Gilroy where it became Gavilan College to accommodate a wider student population. Gavilan College’s aviation program was started at Hollister airport where it functioned for many years before it was moved to San Martin. San Benito County lost its two campuses to Santa Clara County and now all we have are nine locations scattered around Hollister teaching mostly non-accredited courses. We were promised a campus when we voted for the last bond measure. But it seems that most of our portion of the funds went to build a campus for a police academy in Coyote Valley, which was never included in the bond. We never voted for it and it was never supposed to be built. The main college campus in Gilroy benefited the most. The previous administration pulled the wool over our eyes. Any future bond monies need to come to San Benito County for our promised campus for all our new students. More scattered locations cannot be considered a new campus. Ruth Erickson

Police arrest suspected carjacker at gas station TWO VICTIMS FOUGHT OFF 33-YEAR-OLD AUSTIN DOWNING Staff Report

A suspect attempted to car jack two vehicles and fought with their drivers before

police arrived and arrested him, according to Hollister Police Department. On August 18 at approximately 5:10 a.m., Hollister police officers were dispatched to the Safeway Gas Station located at 591 Tres Pinos Road in response to a report of an attempted carjacking. Dispatchers advised a man had attempted to car jack two

separate cars and fought with two separate drivers. They described the carjacking suspect as a white male adult wearing a long sleeved sweater and jeans. The first Hollister police officer arrived on scene and located a man matching the description. The man quickly approached the officer and told the officer he

had a weapon. The officer attempted to search him but the suspect pulled away from the officer and took a fighting stance. The man was tasered when he refused to comply and began to charge the officer with clenched fists. After a short struggle, the man was taken into custody. He was later identified as Austin Downing, a

33-year-old transient with no previous police contacts in Hollister. Officers later spoke with two separate victims who said Downing approached them, opened their car doors and attempted to take their vehicles. In both instances the victims reportedly fought back against Downing’s attempts. Downing was arrested

for two counts of attempted carjacking and one count of resisting and obstructing a police officer. Anyone having information on this case is asked to call Officer Tong at the Hollister Police Department at 6364330. Persons wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip Hotline at 800-78CRIME. Senate bill aims to provide clean drinking water MORE THAN 1 MILLION RURAL RESIDENTS WOULD BE IMPACTED Staff Report

Senator Bill Monning and co-authors of Senate Bill 623, the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water legislation, announced Wednesday a bipartisan agreement between the agricultural community and environmental justice

organizations that makes short and long term drinking water solutions available to more than 1 million low-income Californians who do not have access to safe and affordable drinking water. Western Growers, which represents fresh produce farms throughout California and neighboring states came out in support of the new bill. The use of nitrates in agricultural practices is blamed for runoff that seeps into groundwater supplies that state residents in agricultural communities rely on for

drinking water. High nitrate levels in San Juan Bautista groundwater cause intermittent alerts to go out to residents asking them to refrain from drinking tap water. The latest alert went out earlier this summer in July. Western Growers Executive Vice President Dave Puglia stated in a press announcement: “The act of farming necessarily requires nutrients in the soil to be replenished to allow for the continued production of crops. The use of organic and commercial fertilizers are necessary to

replenish soil nutrients to allow for crop production. We believe it is in the best interests of the people of the state of California to have a safe and secure food supply grown in California for the benefit of people everywhere. To accomplish this, agriculture must be able to continue to use nitrogen-based fertilizers to replenish soil nutrients and ensure healthy crop production.” The announcement further stated that the U.S. government and land grant universities encouraged and guided farmers

on application of nitrogen fertilizer for over half a century to increase food production and efficiency and farmers have relied on and used that advice and guidance, which represented the best management practices of the time. Even though agricultural practices of today significantly reduce or eliminate the potential for nitrates to reach groundwater, the announcement concluded, farmers and researchers are continuing to seek opportunities to improve management practices.

We believe it is in the best interests of the people of the state of California to have a safe and secure food supply grown in California for the benefit of people everywhere. —WESTERN GROWERS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT DAVE PUGLIA

Medical pot decision moved to November SUPES SAY COUNTY NOT PREPARED TO MANAGE ORDINANCE PROCESS Nicholas Preciado Reporter

Katherine Small

Calling their existing medical cannabis policy a mess, county legislators Tuesday decided to defer a vote on proposed rules for cultivation and manufacturing operations to November. “I personally have developed major reservations about moving forward with this medical marijuana ordinance or policy,” San Benito County Supervisor Robert Rivas said during their regular meeting. “Don’t get me wrong. I want to make this ordinance work, but as a county we’re just not prepared. When you look at the urgency ordinance we passed 11 months ago—the amortization clause—it’s a mess.” This is the second time this summer county policymakers postponed voting on the ordinance. In July, the item was delayed after residents complained about water and a proposed boundary line for cultivation in the southern area of the county. The supervisors approved an urgency ordinance in September 2016 to get a handle on illegal cannabis grow operations that had sprouted up throughout the county. Called the amortization clause because it provided limited immunity from prosecution to operations who put in an application with the county, nearly a year later there are 27 applicants awaiting processing. The ordinance was supposed to halt all new cultivation operations within the county with immunity ending in December last year, but county staff revealed in April that applicants who continued to cultivate beyond that cutoff date are not in violation of county code until the board

RALLY UP County employees represented by SEIU Local 521 conduct a noon-time rally outside the Board of Supervisors meeting at the County Administration building Tuesday. The union is in current negotiations with San Benito County over a new labor contract. determines the status of their application. Because of the amount of applicants, the county needs to hire a public hearing officer, which has not yet happened. “We’ve lost control,” Rivas said. “It wasn’t properly managed. So I don’t believe we are in the position to properly manage this full time ordinance.” Pinnacle Strategy President Victor Gomez, currently contracted with the county to help draft the cannabis ordinance, addressed concerns about the amortization clause. “We did have a meeting last week,” Gomez said. “We are making headway on that process.

You’re scheduled to review a potential contract for a hearing officer and we will be prepared. After vetting these applications fully with County Counsel, code enforcement, the sheriff and myself, we will be prepared for the public hearing.” San Benito County Sheriff Darren Thompson spoke on the problem of illegal grows proliferating through the county. “The effort we made last year backfired a bit,” Thompson said. “There’s been plenty of discussion about that today. I understand you’re considering actions and I can tell you with any regulatory scheme, staff is necessary to implement and enforce the

regulation. Much of that responsibility would fall on the staff of the sheriff ’s office.” Staffing levels have dropped in recent years, explained Thompson. The department was funded for 96 positions in 2010 and by 2012 was down to funding for only 46 positions, he said. “I would encourage this board to move cautiously, to bring much needed clarity to our community, to your staff and to consider the length of time it takes for us to establish the staffing levels before you make any further decisions.” Officials said they could start issuing civil notice of violations to illegal grow operations in order to stop cultivation.

“We are going to proceed with notices of violation on all illegal sites,” County Counsel Barbara Thompson said. “There’s nothing stopping the county from issuing notices on all sites that are illegal in the county at this time. That’s our goal. We’re going to hit it with code enforcement.” Supervisor Medina explained the process further. “If there are illegal grows out there and an abatement notice is on their door today, they have approximately seven days to comply,” Medina said. “If we go back out there and they haven’t complied, they’re charged $1,000 a day. Then we go to the courthouse.”

Panetta reassures parent of serviceman Community Talk, 1 released Wednesday, Panetta said he was concerned the President’s plan lacked details. “In his address to the American people, President Trump outlined a regional strategy to prevent terrorists from using Afghanistan as a safe haven to launch attacks against the United States and to stabilize South Asia. I am concerned that President Trump’s proposal lacks details, including on U.S. troop levels and on the vital use of diplomacy to seek stability in the region. Our brave men and women in uniform deserve a detailed strategy with realistic objectives that will bring them home, not vague promises that maintain our open-ended commitment in Afghanistan.” To the parent of a newly minted serviceman, Panetta offered words of comfort and made a

promise to fight for military resources as part of upcoming federal budget negotiations. “Your son is going to be surrounded by a number of young men and women who are there for the same reasons your son signed up: to serve and give back,” Panetta said. “We’re aware right now that our military is shrinking and needs to have proper investment. We have 12 working days to pass that budget. It’ll be difficult to do but with the motivation I have knowing that your son is serving, I’ll do everything I can to make sure that not only is a budget passed, but that it provides the necessary tools for your son to be safe and help do his job in protecting us.” When asked about homelessness, Panetta said he believed that it wasn’t just a local or state issue but a federal issue as well. At last count

in January, there were 527 homeless people in San Benito County. “I do believe there needs to be grants given to local organizations in order to help them provide necessary services,” he said. “Obviously in this delicate and difficult time of proposed spending cuts, those types of services are on the chopping block. But it’s up to us to hear from you so we can continue to fight for those types of grants when they come down to this level.” Resident Elia Salinas asked how Panetta, a member of the Cannabis Caucus, felt about cannabis being currently categorized as a Schedule I drug, the same class as heroin and ecstasy. Cocaine and methamphetamine are considered by the federal government as less dangerous, Schedule II drugs. “I believe that congress

should take the initiative, but I do not see that happening in the 115th Congress right now,” he said. After the town hall, Panetta spoke to the Free Lance about the importance of speaking directly to constituents in open forums during these tense political times. Earlier in the night, as Panetta spoke to his constituents in Hollister, over in Arizona, President Trump held a campaign-style rally before his diehard supporters in Phoenix, while outside thousands of people protested. After the rally police used pepper spray to disperse the crowds. This summer, Republicans on Capitol Hill cancelled similar town hall appearances in response to protests from constituents angry over their attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

Panetta said he embraced the open forum and town halls are one of the ways he gets important information from his constituents. “It’s very important to hear from them,” said Panetta. “If they’re willing to stand up in front of people and address their congress member, then I damn well better be able to listen to them and take their interests back to Washington D.C.” He said his office is always open to his constituents. “You can come to my office if you have issues, especially when dealing with the federal government,” Panetta said. “If something comes up please know I’m there and my staff is there. I’ve tried my best to make sure that we’re responsive to people’s needs as best as we can. If we can’t help we’ll hopefully find other people that can.”

If they’re willing to stand up in front of people and address their congress member, then I damn well better be able to listen to them and take their interests back to Washington D.C. —CONGRESSMAN JIMMY PANETTA

Cannabis shops request another hearing THREE FAILED APPLICANTS VIE FOR SECOND CITY PERMIT Nicholas Preciado Reporter

Cannabis was not on the agenda for the Hollister City Council meeting Monday, but that did not stop three dispensary applicants from requesting reconsideration. Last week, the city leaders approved just one—out of two—possible medical cannabis dispensaries. Purple Cross Rx received the go-ahead, while three other applicants, Haven,

Higher Level of Care and Traditional Roots each failed to secure the second permit. During public comment Monday, the applicants asked the council to reconsider their applications. Applicant Taylor Rodrigues of Haven requested to be agendized for an up or down vote at the September 5 council meeting. “Haven has submitted multiple written comments to your council over the last several months detailing many concerns about fairness and mandated process,” Rodrigues said.

Call us for this weekend's specials

“We even sent a certified letter to the city attorney requesting the city follow the appropriate process mandated by your council. With the city attorney’s recusal it is unclear to us if this was provided to you in your agenda packet before the August 14 meeting.” City Attorney Soren Diaz recused himself from the August 14 meeting because of his ties to law firm L+G, which represents some of the cannabis applicants. On the advice of legal counsel, Haven plans to submit a formal notice of appeal to the

city clerk, Rodrigues said. Sal Palma, who applied for a dispensary permit as Higher Level of Care and was awarded two cultivation and manufacturing permits as Hollister Holistics, asked the council to reconsider their bid to operate a dispensary at 1802 Shelton Drive. “We’re over 1,100 feet from the nearest sensitive use,” Palma said. “I also have an existing dispensary in Monterey County that’s been operating there legally for over two years now and has over 9,800 active patients.”

Palma said he could have the final inspection for a certificate of occupancy conducted by Friday. “That being the case, we’d be able to start hiring within one week creating 20 new jobs immediately,” he said. “Within three weeks we’d be operational and generating tax revenue for the city.” Councilman Ray Friend asked the three applicants to be agendized for reevaluation at the September 5 meeting.

QUEENS OF THE COURT Senior returning starters Nicole Andrade, Kieley Hoskins, Annie Breger and Lauren Sabbatini lead a San Benito team that has won 63 games in the last two years, including a win in the California Interscholastic Federation Northern California playoffs last season. Better than ever? SAN BENITO’S QUEST FOR A 3RD STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE BEGINS NOW emanuel lee Sports Editor

Back-to-back Monterey Bay League championships, including an outright title last year. A 2017 California Interscholastic Federation Northern California playoff victory. Sixty-three— count, ‘em, 63—wins in the last two years, the most in any twoyear stretch in program history. The San Benito High girls volleyball team is in the midst

of a historic stretch, and there’s nothing to suggest that the Haybalers will be slowing down this season. They return four starters, including standout seniors Lauren Sabbatini, Nicole Andrade, Kieley Hoskins and Annie Breger. They also have an influx of talented junior and sophomore newcomers, including Carissa Garcia, Eliana Gaitan, Marisa Greig and Amanda Navarro. Two juniors—Alyssa Ito and Elizabeth Fleming—are returnees who play defensive specialist and middle blocker, respectively. Sophomores Maya Garcia and Kiana Heredia round out the 12-player roster, and they are expected to make an impact as well. After two spectacular seasons, what can the Balers do for an encore? Win a third

consecutive MBL Gabilan Division championship and a Central Coast Section title, the latter they haven’t done since the 2006 season. The Baler play their season opener Thursday at home gainst Gilroy. “We’re going to do really well,” said Sabbatini, who played for Vision in the off-season, one of the most high profile club teams in Northern California. “We’ve been busting our butts with conditioning and volleyball work, and I’m really excited.” Sabbatini enters the season as the best outside hitter in the MBL, someone who can flatout dominate matches for a long stretch. Even though Sabbatini is known for her powerful spikes, Balers coach Emily Tonascia said she’s been impressed with the senior’s overall skill set.

“Lauren is also a fantastic passer,” Tonascia said. “She’s a great all-around player.” Said Sabbatini: “I really wanted to focus on defense because last year I would get subbed out sometimes for defense, and I really wanted to pick it up for my senior year.” Hoskins is also coming off a tremendous season, as her setting and decision-making was impeccable. “Kieley has really great hands, court sense and knows where her teammates are,” Tonascia said. “She communicates well with them.” Breger, a middle blocker, has been an integral player for the team since her sophomore year. Breger has the ability to pound down kills and stuff an opposing team’s attack.

“Annie is a really hard worker and never takes a second off,” Tonascia said. “She has a lot of energy, and I can put her anywhere and she can play.” Andrade returns as the starting libero, and along with Ito some of the central figures in the San Benito defense. Agile and instinctive, Andrade reads the opposing attackers well and puts herself in great position to make a dig. “She’s done really well and has taken a lot of other back row players under her wing,” Tonascia said. “She’ll even stay after practice to help the freshmen team, which is a really awesome thing to see.” A year ago, the Balers had three elite hitters in Sabbatini, Marisa Villegas and Camille ➝ Volleyball, page 18

Balers aim for breakthrough emanuel lee Sports Editor

LEADERSHIP Railyn King and Mia Martinez are the captains of the San Benito High field hockey team.

San Benito High field hockey coach Molly Macierz said she fully expects the team to make a major move up the Monterey Bay League standings this season. Entering its fourth year as a program, the Haybalers—who finished around the .500 mark a year ago—plan on breaking through in 2017. “We’ll be coming after a lot of teams that we should not have lost to last year,” said Macierz, referring to a half-dozen defeats by two goals or less last season. “We’re hoping

to come out strong from the first whistle and play through the whole game with a lot of energy.” San Benito, which played its season-opener against Notre Dame-Salinas Thursday, spent plenty of time in the summer conditioning and strengthtraining in the school’s sparkling new weight room. Macierz expects the work the players put in the summer to transfer into the season, especially in the fourth quarter. “Working hard helps the girls build that mental strength you need,” she said. “They’ll be able to sprint

that much harder in the last minutes of the game, which will give us that extra edge. Conditioning is a huge factor in our sport, and it was a big goal of ours to get in the shape where we’ll be able to beat teams to the ball late in the game.” In their short history, the Balers have had trouble scoring goals. A year ago, they were limited to three goals or less in nearly half of their league matches. That simply won’t cut it, so Macierz made it a point to work on offense in the off-season. Junior forward Railyn King, who was one of the

team’s top goal scorers a year ago, returns and looks better than ever. Macierz said King and sophomore Sam Moran play off each other really well, which should lead to plenty of scoring opportunities for the team. King is confident the team will be able to win the close games that often eluded them a year ago. “We’ve done more drills and prepared ourselves for the new season,” she said. “Going forward, we want to communicate and work well together.” King, Moran and ➝ Field hockey, page 18

hard to come out of her shell and push herself to be that leader on the court when she’s out there.” Tonascia said the team’s strength lies in its passing and defense, which comes as somewhat of a role reversal from the last two years when team’s offense was ahead of its passing and defense. “Something I’d like to see progress rather quickly would be our hitting,” Tonascia said. “Hitting and making good decisions with the spots we’re going to hit, and deciding when to 100 percent swing at a ball and when to tip.” The Balers have high expectations, in part because they have a strong nucleus of returning seniors along with an influx of talented newcomers. How they mesh and play on key points will go a long way in determining if they can win 30-plus matches for the third straight year. Sabbatini is ready to go, having had a strong club season. She was part of a Vision team that advanced to the national championships in Indianapolis in early July. The Balers enter the season invigorated and motivated to continue and perhaps even surpass what they’ve accomplished the last two years. “The girls want to surpass what they did last year,” Tonascia said.

Finley, the last two having graduated. San Benito needs another player to become an offensive tour de force so teams can’t focus all of their blocking schemes on Sabbatini. Fleming might fill that role nicely. By all accounts, he 6-foot-1 Fleming has made dramatic strides since last season, and her teammates can’t wait for her to make a big impact. “She really progressed throughout the summer,” Sabbatini said. “I know she got a lot of help from a lot of different coaches. She’s killing it right now, and will be one of our best hitters.” Sabbatini has been really impressed with the newcomers on the team, noting how they push each other everyday in practice and compete hard for positions. Tonascia also has been happy with how the new varsity players are performing. Navarro has been effective offensively, and she’ll be counted upon to provide the team with depth. “Marisa and Carissa are both utility hitters, Eliana is a solid outside hitter and defensive player, and Kiana has been great at defensive specialist,” Tonascia said. “She’s really good at serve-receive and is able to get her body to the spot she needs it to be to make a play. Maya has also stepped up as a setter, and she’s worked really

PROGRESSING The Balers field hockey team is entering its fourth year as a program. They’ll look to finish with a winning record for the first time. plays this season.” Yasmine Gonzalez and Katalina Santiago will open up the season splitting time at goalie, and they’re expected to push and make each other better as the season goes along. Developing team depth and having solid chemistry have also been focal points during practice for the Balers. “Hopefully we’ll get down our sub rotations so when we put them in the game, there is not a lull or any holes to be filled—it’ll be seamless,” Macierz said.

Macierz said the San Benito High field hockey program continues to expand in all aspects: participation, awareness and experience. She said more players in the area are playing club ball, girls are starting to play the game at an earlier age and the seniors who played as freshmen have gained a vast amount of experience. It’s all adding “People are embracing the sport, too, and adapting to it from whatever sport they were previously playing,” Macierz said.

sophomore forward Brook Sparrer are three of the fastest players on the squad, making the trio a threat to score on a moment’s notice. “It’s exciting because at practice you have a lot of girls constantly scoring,” said Macierz, who was a part of three Central Coast Section championship-winning teams at Los Gatos High before going on to play at University of the Pacific. Senior defender Mia Martinez is the glue to the team’s defense, as she is able to consistently quell offensive attacks. King and Martinez are the captains of the team, players who are ultra reliable and talented. Macierz also expects big things from midfielder Karina Collins, who communicates well and allows the Balers to transition from offense to defense or vice versa rather seamlessly. Junior Mackenzie Honeycutt gives the team versatility, as she can play multiple positions. “If I put her at forward, she can score,” Macierz said. “If put her at defender, she can stop a shot.” Defender Olivia Gonzales also has a knack for stopping shots. “Olivia has a lot of passion for the sport and wants to play after high school,” Macierz said. “She has a strong shot and will play a pivotal role for our short corner

Hollister proud Former Haybalers standout Connor Menez was named the San Jose Giants Pitcher of the Year. The 2013 San Benito High graduate led the Giants with a 4.65 ERA in a offensivedriven league. Menez, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound left-hander, had a great first half of the SingleA season, earning a spot in the All Star Game. He’s currently 6-7, having started 21 games.
