City leaders certified the petition to reconsider development of the vacant 400 block of San Benito Street on Monday. No decision was made on whether to take the issue to Hollister voters, leaving the future of the cityowned parcel in limbo.

“I think that’s disappointing,” said Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez, who led the petition drive and recused himself from all council actions and discussions on the 400 block because he owns the neighboring Vault. “The attitude is ‘yes, they got the signatures, but we’re going to find a way to void this whole referendum.’ I don’t think the voters will be happy

about that. I think [the council] needs to listen to the voters and go from there, rather than try to cancel them out.” Because the petition reached its signature goal, the city council could have decided to rescind their previous plan to sell the parcel. Alternatively, they could have taken steps to hold an election.

San Juan Bautista selects interim city manager ED TEWES RECENTLY SERVED IN GILROY Nicholas Preciado Reporter

The San Juan Bautista City Council Tuesday selected former Gilroy Interim City Manager Ed Tewes to serve as the city’s top administrator. “I was approached with the opportunity to help you and help the staff, and it’s clear there’s no shortage of projects and issues,” said Tewes, who has over 40 years of experience in communities including

Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Long Beach and Modesto. “The most important project I think is to get the next permanent city manager. I can be helpful in that regard. I’m looking forward to working with you.” The council was eager to get Tewes onboard as soon as possible because current acting Interim City Manager Matt Orbach, who juggles a variety of other city jobs, is leaving in two weeks. “After that two week period, report back to us,” Councilman Dan DeVries said. “By then

you should have a good sense of how much time you need, what the ideal schedule would look like going forward. In other words, everything would be front loaded for those two weeks to maximize your interaction with Matt.” Council members settled on a $50 an hour contract with no benefits at 32 hours a week, equal to four days. Former City Manager Roger Grimsley abruptly resigned last month after six years in the position during a city council closed session. Grimsley,

who also served in a number of high profile roles in Hollister, including city manager and public works director during the 1970s and 1980s, had announced his intent to retire last year, but resigned after it came to light that he had approved significant alterations to a section of the Rancho Vista housing development currently under construction, without requiring the developer to seek approval from elected city representatives. The city council also moved to hire Pleasanton-based

4Leaf Inc. to handle the city’s engineering position, also left vacant by Grimsley’s resignation. The engineering consulting firm also works for the City of Hollister and San Benito County. Two 4Leaf consultants were running the county’s Resource Management Agency up until a couple weeks ago when a permanent director was found. The council voted unanimously on both matters. Mayor Chris Martorana was out with an excused absence.

City water treatment plant starts operations $30 MILLION FACILITY WILL IMPROVE WATER QUALITY IN AREAS Staff Report

#

Nick Preciado

The new West Hills Water Treatment Plant is now operational and bringing higherquality, better-tasting water to the west and central areas of Hollister. A grand opening event is planned to celebrate on Saturday, November 4 at 10 a.m. The treatment plant began operations on September 12, several months ahead of schedule. It’s now treating water imported into the county and blending it with local groundwater. Local groundwater, the primary source of drinking water up to this point, is naturally high in dissolved salts. The new system will blend around 40/60 groundwater to imported water, which will help with the salty taste. “Adding this new source of higher-quality drinking water

offers so many benefits to the community, in addition to the greatly-improved taste,” said San Benito County Water District Director Sonny Flores, who represents the west side of Hollister. “With less mineral build up in appliances that use water, they should last longer. Residents can consider getting rid of their water softeners and buying less bottled water. Agriculture benefits by getting higher quality recycled water for irrigation use.” The $30 million West Hills Water Treatment Plant was funded through a combination of county water district reserves, grants and rates paid by the City of Hollister and Sunnyslope County Water District customers. As the new water is phased into the city’s pipeline system, it may dislodge mineral deposits left in the pipes, water officials said. It’s possible, though unlikely, that some homes and businesses could see a temporary change in the color of tap water. Officials said this is a

Color changes can be flushed out by letting the faucet run for a few minutes. The City of Hollister will also flush its

distribution pipelines to help minimize effects and conduct increased water quality testing. The grand opening event on November 4 is open to the entire community. The entrance to the West Hills Water Treatment

Plant is around three blocks west of the San Justo Reservoir on the opposite side of the street (2544 Union Road). Look for signs and balloons that will mark the road leading up to the treatment plant.

mass book in Latin from France. “It was an exciting time of scholarship and knowledge. Book printing was a relatively new thing,” said Whitehead. “I think we have this idea that earlier centuries were not very sophisticated and yet they really were. Sure, they didn’t have electricity but some say a highly educated person from the Renaissance was more highly educated than people coming out of universities today. They knew multiple languages and a lot about history. There were a lot of very knowledgeable people during this period doing a lot of extraordinary things.” Northern California Renaissance Faire runs every weekend through October 15 at Casa de Fruta in Hollister.

just a great time,” said Williams. Stage shows are divided into familyfriendly and adults only and spectators can get their hair braided, purchase a flower garland, ride a flying sofa pushed by long-haired gentlemen who resemble pirates and gorge on meat pies - among other delights. “I have a high level stress job and it’s an escape,” said Geleynse. “I can put all that aside for the weekend and just be somebody else. I love it.” The Renaissance has a particular resonance for rare book collector, Steven Whitehead. He brought some of his collection of 16th century books, including a history of the British Isles printed in 1577 and a

The council did neither. Instead they chose to wait until they received an opinion by the state attorney general on whether the Mayor’s petition was even valid. The city has, so far, been waiting for nearly two months. “There’s an issue as to whether the referendum in this particular instance addresses a legislative act as opposed to an administrative act,” said city attorney Soren Diaz. “We anticipate receiving an opinion, a formal opinion which is citable in court, from the attorney general’s office within the next 30 days. Hopefully.” Said councilwoman Mickie Luna: “That’s the top cop in California. No matter what we do in San Benito County or the City of Hollister, if the attorney general says this is the way it’s going to go, that’s the way it’s going to go.” The council decided to take the issue up again at their meeting in October. Bob Tiffany, owner of Tiffany Motor Company and a board director at the Community Foundation for San Benito County, which currently has an agreement with the city to purchase the vacant downtown plot in order to build a new philanthropic center, said: “After a very long wait, we have an outstanding project built by local builders that will both revitalize and help those with the greatest need in our community. In any other city this project would be fully embraced.” The nonprofit organization and the Del Curto Brothers Group, a developer behind a block of townhomes near the San Benito Foods cannery in downtown Hollister, entered into an agreement to purchase the 400 block parcel for $390,000. Next to the foundation’s new offices the developers

would build shopfronts and condominiums. Because Velazquez’s petition garnered 1,660 signatures, sixty more than was required to force the council to revisit their decision to sell, that vision is on shaky ground. Council members had mixed feelings about the 400 block petition. Councilman Ray Friend called it illegal and voted down every action except it’s certification. “It was spearheaded by somebody who has to recuse himself because he has a conflict of interest both financially and he lives close to it,” Friend said. If the council does not withdraw their resolution to sell the parcel to the two parties, they must call for a referendum and let the voters decide at either the next regular municipal election in November 2018 or hold a special election as required by California elections code. Calling for an election is not cheap. If the council decides to take the issue to city voters, staff recommended doing so at next year’s general election when the cost would be least at $25,000 to $30,000. A special election could cost the city between $40,000 to $50,000 if held during the statewide primary on June 5 and more than $200,000 if held on April 10, both of next year. To date, the city has already spent $3,168.79 verifying the petition signatures through the San Benito County Registrar of Voters. An election would be paid with money from the city’s general fund reserves, which stands at about $5 million, according to city manager Bill Avera. Councilman Jim Gillio wanted to know how rescinding the sale agreement would impact city

partners who stand to benefit from the land purchase. “This is obviously something that hasn’t been litigated yet,” Gillio said. “I think we’re going to end up in court over this if we decide not to give those agencies those property tax dollars. I don’t know how that’s going to shake out.” Gillio, however, leaned towards handing the decision to Hollister voters. “I think that there’s a valid project down there, I know there’s a lot of support in the community for this. I think that we ought to consider pushing this out to an election,” he said. “I understand the cost is great, $25,000 to $30,000 is nothing to sneeze at. That’s a ton of money. But because of the situation we’re in, that’s the route I think we ought to go.” Resident Rolan Resendiz, during public comment, suggested the city bypass a costly election and take back the resolution to sell the parcel to the Del Curto Brothers and Community Foundation. “You can listen to the constituents, to the people that signed that petition, and you can rescind the decision,” said Resendiz. “That’s why those processes are in place and that allows for everyday citizens like myself to take part in this type of government agency. Listen to the people’s voices, listen to the action taken.” Vice mayor Karson Klauer thanked everyone involved in the process, including those who signed the 400 block petition. “This is a grand opportunity to deal with the process and figure it out as a community,” said Klauer. “Thirty thousand dollars is a lot, but I think it’s not a lot when it comes to hopefully instilling some trust back into the system.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

As crowds of folks, many in costume, converged on Casa de Fruta for the first day of the Northern California Renaissance Faire on Saturday, it got us wondering—what are the best ways to unplug and unwind in San Benito County?

Roseann Hernandez Cattani

Nants Foley My go-to spot is Pinnacles National Park. The drive down there is beautiful. The park staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. There are hikes for all levels of fitness. Not so good with hills? Visit the Bacon homestead. Head down stressed, come back soothed. Works every time! It's a good life. Ruth Erickson Getting together for a leisurely lunch or a good movie with friends or attending one of the many events in the county with them. Keith Snow I go to the movies, they have good popcorn, bonbons and licorice. They are really kind and give me a cup to put my popcorn in. El Michoacano has good tasting food and there is BaskinRobbins $1.49 scoops on Tuesdays. There is Starbucks for grabbing coffee with a friend. Tip N Toe Salon have great pedicures and manicures—men have to keep up and have nice feet and hands, too. The San Benito County Fair is coming up so I'm looking

forward to that. Bill Mifsud Head down Cienega Road and check out some of our great wineries and sip fine wine. Why not try Pinnacles National Park—so much to see and do but bring water and sunblock. Mike Zendejas A Harley ride on San Benito back roads.

The last couple weeks have felt like a dream. It all started in Tres Pinos when Confederate and Union soldiers in full regalia—rifles drawn—battled among the 19th century clapboard houses at San Benito County Historical Park. Then on Saturday an assortment of explorers, fair maidens, madcap barons and wenches galore converged on Casa de Fruta for the first day of the Northern California Renaissance Faire. I had not seen so many corseted bosoms since Madonna’s “Vogue” period in the 1990s. I was curious about why people donned the costumes and affectations of generations past for fun. Was the Civil War and the Renaissance really that much of a hoot? “It is an escape,” said a gentleman at the Faire who looked like Sir Francis Drake from my old elementary school history textbook. “There are no devices here,” whispered a Civil War re-enactor in a starched-white bonnet, her voice low enough so nearby teenagers could not hear her treachery. “It is a good family activity.” As a mom to a nine-year-old who needs at least one device on her person at all times, I was intrigued. Looking around the Faire and the white tents of the make-believe Civil War there were families with children of all ages. They were smiling, laughing and talking to each other. There were no blurry eyes because of excessive screen time. Minecraft and YouTube did not exist. It is so easy to get caught up in the everyday hustle of commuting, organizing play-dates, volunteering at your kid’s school and working long into the night. Thanks to personal technology like the smartphone, the line between leisure and work has been irreparably blurred and the very nature of relaxation has changed so that fifteen minutes playing a mindless mobile game like Candy Crush counts as downtime. My daughter hates it when I tell her that back when I was a kid we didn’t have ondemand television, smartphones and tablets and when we went on long drives in the car the only entertainment we had to mark the miles was punch buggy and 20 questions. Over the last few decades advances in consumer technology have completely transformed our lives in both big and small ways. The internet spurred entirely new industries and careers. And if you missed a music video the first time around on MTV you can find it on YouTube. But there is a downside to the instant gratification that technology affords. We have all grown a bit more impatient, are less willing to be bored and daydream and instead of talking to each other, we are all looking down, checking email and posting on social media. So here’s a challenge. Let us all unplug for the day and put on a corset or tunic or do as one of our readers suggested, hop on a Harley and drive the back roads of San Benito County.

County creates LGBTQ resource center WILL OFFER ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT TO YOUTH 13-24 Nicholas Preciado Reporter

As tensions mount across the nation’s chaotic political landscape, county officials look to support local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth with a new resource center opening in October. “The goal of this program is to identify opportunities to reach out to youth in the community who identify as LGBTQ, create a welcoming environment within the community, and offer support to help youth understand how their personal experiences affect their mental health,” San Benito County Behavioral Health Clinical Supervisor Veronica Gallacher said.

The new center, which opens on Saturday October 14, will serve LGBTQ community members and supporters in high school and individuals up to 24 years old. The center will offer access to resources, support groups, art workshops, yoga groups, guest speakers, open mics, connection resources and other performances. There will also be regularly scheduled family events to help family members understand the stigma, discrimination and experiences of LGBTQ youth. Activities will change monthly and ongoing events will be driven by the needs of the LGBTQ community. “The LGBTQ Resource Center is intended to create a supportive and safe environment for youth who may be reluctant to be seen entering our main outpatient clinic,” Gallacher said. “It is important to have a safe space for the LGBTQ

My vision for our group is to create somewhere people can go to have a safe space. —RAYMOND ANDRADE, PEER MENTOR community in Hollister to provide resources to LGBTQ youth and offer support groups while advocating for change in the community.” The idea for the center stemmed from the 2016 Pulse nightclub shootings in Florida. Supervisor Robert Rivas and former Supervisor Margie Barrios held a meeting soon after the shooting to discuss the needs of the local LGBTQ community. “The San Benito Board of Supervisors expressed interest in devolving services in our community to create accessible services to meet the needs of these high-risk youth,” Gallacher said. “This was especially important since studies show one of

the leading causes of death for LGBTQ individual’s ages 10-24 is suicide. Also, LGBTQ youth are more likely to experience negative mental health outcomes due to stigmatization.” County supervisors approved a prevention and early intervention plan from behavioral health this June that included the center. The new LGBTQ Resource Center will be located inside the Esperanza Center in downtown Hollister. Gallacher said the central location will help dissolve negative stereotypes by offering mainstream visibility. “In contrast to our main outpatient clinic on San

Felipe Road, the Esperanza Center’s environment is more relaxed and focused on activities that highlight individual’s strengths and abilities as well as community support,” Gallacher said. “The Esperanza Center is less formal than our main office helping to eliminate stigmas promote acceptance.” While the LGBTQ Resource Center is still in development, three peer mentors have been hired to help lead the project. “Right now, we’re just trying to get as many people to know it’s being built,” said Raymond Andrade, one of the peer mentors. “Until recently, there’s been nothing

like this in the community. We want as many participants as we can between the ages of 13 to 24.” The center will be a judgement-free zone where youth can ask questions they might not get to ask elsewhere. It’s grand opening on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is open to the entire community. Attendees can vote on the center’s official name. “A lot of these people are going through the same situations, but don’t have a way to connect with each other,” Andrade said. “My vision for our group is to create somewhere people can go to have a safe space. This would be a place to be themselves, ask questions and learn about things that are taboo in some households. I want to make it somewhere where people can learn more about themselves while also realizing they aren’t alone.”

County moves to stop work at solar farm NEGOTIATIONS BREAK DOWN WITH CON ED Nicholas Preciado Reporter

County officials have ordered work to stop at the solar farm at Panoche Valley after negotiations broke down with operator ConEdison Development. “They’re also submitting for a project down in San Bernardino,” Board Chairman Jaime De La Cruz said by phone last week. “We’re sending them a letter to let them know what kind of individuals they’re working with.” San Benito County sent out notices of violation and default to the solar farm operator and any companies associated with the project on September 14. This comes after the county issued a notice of default July 24. According to the county, ConEdison Development is in breach of the development agreement, because the company failed to establish a business location in the unincorporated area of the county, resulting

in a loss of both sales and property tax revenue. They also claim the company owes sales tax and there are not enough local workers at the solar farm, which was part of the initial agreement. “The county hasn’t received a single cent of owed sales tax,” Supervisor Anthony Botelho said. The county also believes the solar operator is not complying with environmental guidelines. “What was really the tipping point for the board was [ConEdison Development] did not want to comply with the environmental impact report or road improvements for Panoche Road,” said Botelho. “That’s a deal breaker.” The Board of Supervisors spent weeks negotiating with ConEdison Development trying to come to an agreement on how to move forward without impacting work at the site. “It’s a sad thing to know a group like ConEdison Development would take advantage of San Benito County,” De La Cruz said. “Hopefully they’ll comply with the regulations and

agreements that have been set in place.” The Panoche Valley Solar Farm operator announced in July the project would be cut from 247 megawatts to a current projected size of 127 megawatts because of a court settlement between ConEdison Development and environmental groups including the Sierra Club. The agreement reduced the size of the Panoche Valley Solar Farm to around 1,300 acres, with over 26,000 acres set aside as conservation land for endangered species like the giant kangaroo rat. The drastic decrease in size meant the county would lose on sales and property tax, dropping from $25.6 million to $8.9 million. Supervisors Jerry Muenzer and Robert Rivas didn’t respond to requests for comment. Supervisor Mark Medina did not want to comment for the article at this time. ConEdison Development was not immediately available for comment.

Get in on the fun early at the San Benito County Fair as the horse events get underway Friday at Bolado Park. Festivities start with the junior rodeo and continue over the weekend with the ranch rodeo, 4-H and FFA horse show. Opening day for the fair is on September 28. Now in its 94th year, the fair is featuring a couple of firsts. “We have an exciting new motorsports show this year,” said Dara Tobias, fair manager. Spectators will be thrilled over two nights of exhilarating motorsports, featuring freestyle motocross, quad wars, diesel truck pulls and more. Then there is the firstever Banda and Charro show in the arena.

BOUNCE AROUND A group of kids try their luck at the ping-pong toss at last year’s San Benito County Fair. Event organizers expect nearly 20,000 attendees at this year’s fair. Other show highlights include the Quilts of Honor ceremony. The local Pinnacle Quilters Guild has made over 40 quilts with a red, white and blue, Americana or military theme. During the ceremony area veterans are recognized for their service to the country and are presented with the handmade quilt. Veterans are identified by their branch of service, where they served and place of conflict.

At the Taste of San Benito event on the Sunday of the fair, local producers showcase their oils, wines, ciders, teas, and many other unique products. Event organizers expect to welcome more than 18,000 visitors to the fair this year. The San Benito County Fair is from September 28 to October 1 at Bolado Park, 9000 Airline Highway.

Gavilan College sanctions football team ATHLETICS STAFF TO UNDERGO TRAINING Cheeto Barrera Sports Editor

Gavilan College officially announced its self-imposed sanctions stemming from accusations of recruiting and benefits violations against the football team that saw 17 players dismissed in August. The football program will be on probation for three years and will be barred from postseason play for two years. In addition, the athletics staff will undergo in-service training with Athletic Director Ron Hannon and will give the minutes and the agendas to the Northern California Football Conference for review. Finally, football coach Mike Dovenberg must give monthly reports on the team’s recruiting efforts. Two assistant coaches were also placed on leave pending further investigation into their involvement with the rules violations. The college said if it is found the two coaches—who it didn’t name but a source familiar with the situation has identified the coaches as Austin Reville and Carlos Woods—further action up to and including termination will be taken. A source said one of the coaches has stepped down from his position, however, Gavilan said no resignation has been tendered by either of the coaches. “The college has an opportunity now to ensure that all of our processes are reviewed, and all responsible personnel are provided the training and oversight to ensure that this never

again happens at Gavilan College,” Gavilan College President Dr. Kathleen Rose said in a press release. Rose went on to say that going forward athletics recruiting will be undergoing much stronger scrutiny, particularly where outof-state students are concerned. “From the first moment this situation came to light, my focus, and that of the Athletics Department, and the Board of Trustees was on the welfare of the students,” Rose said. Gavilan sent home all 17 after the college said it offered them a chance to stay on as students but were subsequently turned down. The students were given plane tickets or gas cards to return to their homes, as far away as Florida and Virginia. The players came from Oregon, Chicago, Houston, Florida, Baltimore and Virginia, among other places. Gavilan said the cost to send the students home is estimated at $10,000. The college confirmed the source of the funds came from “undesignated funds” from the Gavilan College Educational Foundation. Dr. Rose said the Gavilan Board of Trustees did not need to give approval for the expenditure, but was made aware of the release of funds for the tickets and gas cards. Hannon said in a press release that he fully supports the sanctions. “This is appropriate. This is fair. It is within the guidelines." Hannon said. “It has been a very troubling occurrence for the Athletics program. We have a reputation, statewide, for strict

adherence to the rules. This situation does not reflect who we are, nor does it meet our high standards as an intercollegiate athletic program. As a member institution in good standing within the (California Community College Athletics Association), we will continue to uphold the Constitution and Bylaws.” Nor Cal Football Commissioner Gary Kollenborn, whose office signed off on the selfimposed sanctions, said Gavilan conducted its investigation by the book and its sanctions were by the book and there was no need to further punish the college. He praised the college’s openness through the process. “Gavilan did an excellent job in terms of researching issues and following our constitution and by laws and taking appropriate actions,” Kollenborn said. The controversy stems from 17 out of state players who were housed in a three-bedroom house in Hollister. The players had arranged a deal with the homeowner to purchase items for the house such as beds and bedding for them all to sleep on as well as pay for books and tuition for school. They said they would start paying rent in September once they had jobs and the moving expenses were taken care of. The players were also accused of receiving free food provided by the homeowner who would cook for the players in the evenings. The players insisted the food was not a perk but rather just the owner offering the players a chance to eat meals she was already preparing. Kollenborn said despite the seemingly altruistic nature of the

arrangement, it became a violation because it wasn’t readily offered to all Gavilan students. He said student-athletes cannot receive benefits that are not readily available to all students at the college. Kollenborn said if there wasn’t a widely available announcement open to all students, the athletes cannot be offered a deal to not pay rent. In effect, if a for rent announcement was posted at Gavilan offering a chance to waive the first month’s rent for students and the house was open to rent by all students, the arrangement would have been just fine. However, because the athletes and the homeowner came to the arrangement among themselves, it counted as an extra benefit and as such was a violation under the CCCAA guidelines. “This is not how any of us wanted to start the academic year,” said Dr. Rose, “but we will come out of it with stronger controls, better training, and the benefit of a robust campus dialog regarding what happened.” She reinforced her commitment to hold the college to the highest standard. “We have, and will continue to strive for these principles in our handling of this matter, and will continue to be transparent about our actions,” Rose said.

Gavilan looking into all sports

The college said it is now doing an audit of the entire athletics department, beyond just looking into the football program Dr. Rose insisted this was not a reaction to the events that led to 17 out of state students

getting dismissed from the football team. “This really is an opportunity to do an audit of all the athletic processes and procedures to make sure in compliance across board,” Dr. Rose said in an interview on Sept. 13. Dr. Rose has just completed her first year as Gavilan’s president and noted that this was just an opportunity for her to catch up with the athletics department. “I want to make sure we’re doing what’s best for the student athletes and make sure all the student athletes receive all services both athletically and academically,” Dr. Rose said. The controversy into the football program came to light because a mother who was concerned her son might get evicted from the house he and 16 others were staying in called the president’s office. That kicked off a wave of investigations that ultimately uncovered the arrangement reached by the players and sparked questions into their recruitment. The recruitment investigation is still ongoing. California junior colleges are prohibited from contacting and recruiting students who live out of state except in cases where they receive special permission from the CCCAA to do so. Some of the football players contacted by the Gilroy Dispatch said they either found Gavilan on Twitter and reached out or they had friends or family members who attended or played sports at the college. The two coaches placed on leave were responsible for recruiting for the football team.

From the first moment this situation came to light, my focus, and that of the Athletics Department, and the Board of Trustees was on the welfare of the students —GAVILAN COLLEGE PRESIDENT DR. KATHLEEN ROSE

State senate seat up for grabs next year LUIS ALEJO CONSIDERS THROWING HAT IN RACE Staff Report

State Senator Anthony Cannella is set to term out next year, potentially leaving the San Benito representative’s seat open to a familiar face: Monterey County Supervisor and former State Assemblyman Luis Alejo. Alejo announced this week that he intends to open an exploratory committee to consider running for California's 12th state senate district in 2018. Alejo begins his exploratory committee with nearly $100,000 cash-on-hand. The politician noted he had previously stated he had no plans to run for senate, but the threat posed to the community by President Donald Trump

prompted him to reconsider. He issued the following statement upon announcing his exploratory committee: "I greatly value the impact I can have as a local county supervisor and I never thought I would be compelled to go back to Sacramento,” Alejo said. “But President Trump's disastrous and harmful administration has caused me to seriously look at running for an office where I am best positioned to fight back against the heartless policies of the federal government and protect the interests of Californians. Our state can be the leading light in the fight against the policies coming out of Washington, D.C. and I believe I'm uniquely positioned to be a part of that battle.” The 12th District seat is currently held by Cannella, who

can not run next year because of term limits. The senate district includes the Salinas Valley, all of San Benito and Merced Counties and portions of Fresno, Madera and Stanislaus Counties. The district represents nearly 1 million California residents. With an overall population that is 65 percent Latino, 46 percent Democratic, 29 percent Republican and 25 percent Independent, the district is considered to be one of the most likely in the state to switch from Republican to Democratic in 2018. "After recent press reports, I have also had many local residents and community leaders ask me to consider running for State Senate,” Alejo said. “It's a big consideration because I greatly enjoy the work

I'm doing now as a Monterey County Supervisor, on issues like homelessness and housing, expanding healthcare and local parks, protecting immigrants and civil rights, as well as working on local water infrastructure and sustainability issues. However, I also recall the impact I was able to make as a state assemblyman, passing laws that improved the lives of people throughout the state, and wonder if I am needed again in that role. Over the next few months, I will be very thoughtful about this big decision and will be reaching out to the grassroots along with leaders from Salinas to the Central Valley." Alejo is a former mayor of the City of Watsonville and served on the state assembly from 2010 through 2016 where he served as Chairman of the

Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, as well as Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. He authored 76 bills that were signed into law and 16 legislative resolutions approved by the legislature during his tenure, including the landmark Assembly Bill 60 that allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license. Alejo was named 2015 Legislator of the Year by the League of California Cities and was ranked 2013's Most Effective Democratic Assembly Member by a survey on AroundTheCapitol's "Nooner" newsletter. He received his bachelor of arts degrees from UC Berkeley, his master’s degree in education from Harvard University and his law degree from UC Davis School of Law.

Our state can be the leading light in the fight against the policies coming out of Washington, D.C. and I believe I’m uniquely positioned to be a part of that battle. —MONTEREY COUNTY SUPERVISOR LUIS ALEJO

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Balers are rolling SAN BENITO HIGH DOMINATING MBL GABILAN EARLY IN LEAGUE SEASON emanuel lee Sports Editor

Down 20-14 in Game 3, the San Benito High girls volleyball team showed why it is the two-time defending Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division champions. The Haybalers were playing a talented—albeit a young and relatively inexperienced—Christopher High squad in Gilroy. And the Balers’ experience showed, as they went on a commanding 11-3 run to clinch a match that was played on Sept.

14. Game scores were 25-14, 25-21, 25-23. “I liked what I saw in how they reacted when things were not going their way (in Game 3),” Balers coach Emily Tonascia said. “We faltered a little bit after a strong start, but we came back strong.” Elizabeth Fleming said she and her teammates were plenty motivated to get the match done in three games. After all, they had school the next day, and they didn’t want to spend any more time on the court than what was necessary. “We all picked it up there at the end and got the job done,” said Fleming, who had an instrumental role in the victory, tallying four of her nine kills in the decisive third game.

Two days after defeating Christopher, San Benito went a perfect 6-0 in winning the Harbor Tournament. The Balers defeated Vintage of Napa, Vista del Lagos, Carmel, Salinas, West of Tracy and Granite Bay. Outside hitter Lauren Sabbatini was the tournament Most Valuable Player, while Kieley Hoskins and Nicole Andrade were named to the AllTournament team. The Balers have won nine consecutive matches after going 2-3 in the Menlo Tournament on Sept. 9. They enter Thursday’s league match against Alisal having not dropped a set in three matches. If they end up winning a third straight league title, they’ll probably have plenty

of more moments like they did in rallying to beat Christopher late in Game 3. In that game, San Benito’s defense was struggling, as the Cougars started to find more spots for balls to drop for points. However, the Balers tightened up their defense when it counted the most—at the end. Suddenly, the balls that were dropping earlier in the game were getting dug up. And that along with some timely tips from Fleming helped pave the way for a decisive game-ending run. “Our defense started to struggle because Christopher started making some solid offensive plays and some really solid swings,” Tonascia said. “When ➝ Volleyball, page 18

Balers flattened by Chargers SAN BENITO GETS HUMBLED IN 35-0 LOSS TO WILCOX emanuel lee Sports Editor

The San Benito High football team enters Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division play on Friday against Alvarez intent on getting off to a focused start—something that was lacking in last week’s 35-0 loss to Wilcox. The Haybalers, who were seemingly lacking their usual energy and verve, suffered one of their most lopsided defeats in the last decade. Give credit to Haybalers coach Bryan Smith for accepting the responsibility of his team’s lack of spirit and enthusiasm as it prepared to play a traditionally tough Wilcox squad. “I had a sense coming

in here that we weren’t ready to go (from a mental standpoint), and that falls on me,” he said. “I take full responsibility for something like that— absolutely. The lack of energy? I don’t have an answer for that. I kind of felt it when we got off the bus. I wasn’t super happy about it in the locker room, and I didn’t see a ton of leadership from our guys.” Smith added that everyone—from the players to the coaches—will learn from this game. “There are many things to learn from this loss,” he said. “Maybe it’s the drive over, maybe it’s how we entered the stadium.” It was a disheartening loss for the Balers, who looked impressive in opening the season with ➝ Football page 18

On paper, Saturday’s 8-man non-league football game between Anzar High and Stuart Hall is a mismatch. Fortunately for the Hawks, football games are decided on the field. Anzar (1-0) enters the contest at Boxer Field in San Francisco’s Balboa Park a decided underdog against Stuart Hall (2-1), which is ranked 20th in the state by Maxpreps.com. “It’s a really big test for Anzar and a great barometer for where the program is at essentially,” Hawks coach Kollin Kosmicki said. “In prior years, I’m not even sure if Anzar looked at this as a winnable type game. But now we certainly are. I think it’s a significant game for the program, and we’re not trying to prove anything to anybody but ourselves.” The Hawks have played only one game this season, due to its last ➝ Anzar, page 18

said. “He’s a force that can run and throw.” Kosmicki agreed: “You don’t stop a guy like him. He’s going to make some big plays, but we have to limit them.” The Knights are far from a one-man show. They possess athleticism at the skill positions and size on the lines. Linebacker Jonathan Newsome has also taken some snaps under center to give defenses another thing to think about and plan for. The receiving core—“It’s one of the strongest we’ve had here,” Robinson said— features Quinn Rodriguez and Mitchell Krupnik, who both have gone over 100 yards receiving in the same game in two of the team’s three contests. Robinson said he has the utmost respect for Anzar, which despite winning only one game a year ago has traditionally been a tough opponent for the Knights. “Anzar always plays us real tough,” Robinson said. “They always have tough kids, and their coaching staff always gets their players to play hard.” Stuart Hall defeated Anzar 26-6 a year ago, but the Hawks enter this game with a completely different mindset. The Hawks certainly respect the Knights;

however, they’re not going into the game with a hope for the best mentality. On the contrary, Anzar feels emboldened because it seemingly has one of its most talented teams— at least from an athleticism standpoint—in recent memory. “We’re out to prove Anzar is right there with teams like Woodside Priory and Stuart Hall,” Kosmicki said. “We don’t really care what the rankings are or where we’re ranked. For us, I’ve got these guys physically and mentally prepared for Stuart Hall. The way we look at it is we’re prepared to win the football game Saturday. I don’t think we’ll be overmatched by any means. Athletically, I think we match up just fine. As long as we execute our offense, I don’t’ think they can stop us. They’ll be a little bigger than us, but we’ve also got playmakers on offense and defense. And frankly, we have plenty of size with our two guys in the middle—they’re stout and powerful.” Kosmicki was referring to Jose Pineda and Rafael Magana, both of whom tip the scales at over 250 pounds. The two are the stalwarts on the offensive line, along with center Ben Minard, who also plays an instrumental

opponent—Shandon High—cancelling on them two weeks ago. Before that, Anzar had a bye week, meaning it will have gone three weeks between games before facing Stuart Hall. Other than a bit of anxiousness from wanting to play and the usual lull or two that comes with daily practices without a game in immediate sight, the Hawks have had a chance to focus on themselves and improve daily. “It’s been a challenge to deal with having so much time off when everyone is so excited to move forward and continue to see how far we’ve come,” Kosmicki said. “You have to deal with complacency issues naturally, guarding against that and making sure practices are meaningful.” Stuart Hall has had some great results so far, having beaten Upper Lake and South Fork following a season-opening 58-56 loss to undefeatedWoodside Priory, a traditional 8-man power. The Knights have an explosive offense and stout defense, led by two-way standout quarterback/linebacker Jorim Powell, a four-year starter who has a number of weapons at his disposal. “He’s definitely a gamechanger,” Stuart Hall coach Richard Robinson

role at linebacker. “I’m expecting big things out of Minard dealing with that Stuart Hall offense,” Kosmicki said. “And Jose and Rafael, I’ll take those tough guys against any team.” Magana and Pineda will also see plenty of snaps on the defensive line, which

also features end/linebacker Jake Lindholm, who is one of the team’s premier playmakers. One thing is for certain: Like most coaches, Kosmicki knows there is no room for fear in football—“That’s anti-football,” he said—and his team certainly won’t be

apprehensive for Saturday’s game. “With Stuart Hall there is absolutely no intimidation factor,” he said. “And no reason for there to be an intimidation factor. We can play them today and we’d be fine that. I haven’t been this excited for competition in quite a while.”

wins over Sacred Heart Prep and Los Gatos before running into the Chargers, who entered the contest 0-2. But it was Wilcox that looked like the team with a superior record. The Chargers ran all over the Balers, piling up 424 of their 470 yards of offense via the run game. San Benito, meanwhile, finished with 115 yards, one of its lowest outputs in years. Wilcox quarterback

David Hernandez (181 yards rushing) and running back Paul Rosa (195 yards) repeatedly gashed the San Benito defense. “I’d really have to look at the film to see if we did our jobs,” Smith said. “I know we didn’t at times because that is where the big plays come from. When they get big gainers, that means someone broke down in responsibility. Is that schematically or is that the players

personnel-wise, that is what we have to look at.” San Benito was equally ineffective on offense after looking solid in its first two games. The Balers’ opening drive of the game turned out to be their best, as they gained 46 yards on eight plays, only to be halted on a 4th-and-8 play from the Wilcox 30-yard line. On the team’s third play from scrimmage, Slade Wilson hooked up with Gio Giannotta for a 15-yard

gain. Three plays later, Jonny Gonzalez busted off a 22-yard run. However, Wilcox’s defense got stingy, and San Benito couldn’t get anything else going offensively for the rest of the game. It was a stunning reversal from the team’s first two games, when it looked potent. The Balers crossed midfield only three times, and never reached the red zone. The Chargers changed things up on the

Balers, utilizing a defense they ran two years ago as compared to the one they’ve been employing this season. “I felt good coming into the game offensively, but there’s always a question mark,” Smith said. “The defense they presented tonight they did two years ago, and we struggled against it. We could have spent more time in practice planning for it. We spent a little more time

planning for what they’ve been running currently versus having the intuition or the thought, ‘Hey, they had success two years ago (a Wilcox win), why wouldn’t they go back to it?’ They didn’t have success with what they ran against us last year, but it is what it is. We would’ve liked to gone into league play a little different way, but we didn’t. So now we’ll see what type of team we have from here.”

San Benito girls volleyball team taking care of business in league action Page 17 that happens, what tends to happen on defense is you stop moving and start to stay in one spot. Or you’re still running when the ball is hit, and all of a sudden you’re in the wrong spot to make the play. But at the end, we did a good job of slowing down, taking a deep

breath and making sure we were in the right spot on defense, which kind of dug us out of that hole.” Sabbatini, one of the team’s outstanding four returning seniors along with Andrade, Hoskins and Annie Breger, finished with a team-high 12 kills. Breger had six kills and Marisa Greig had four

kills. Eight different players recorded kills for the Balers, a testament to their variety of offensive options. Sabbatini and Fleming proved to be the most potent attackers, as they combined for the team’s final four kills. Despite not playing any club volleyball in the off-season—Fleming also does swimming and

basketball—the junior has made a dramatic improvement from a year ago. Fleming’s athletcism has transferred over to the volleyball court in a big way. “Liz did a great job tonight,” Tonascia said. “We’ve been talking a lot about our hitters making a lot of smart decisions, especially when we

can’t just swing away. We couldn’t power through because Christopher had a really solid block up, and I told the girls to make the smart choice and put the ball where there’s not a digger. Liz started going to the tip and it worked.” Fleming said it was the communication with Hoskins and Tonascia that

helped her see the weak spots in the Christopher defense. “They said to tip it because the defense was pushed back,” Fleming said. Breger and Fleming led the way at the net, as they combined for eight blocks. Andrade had two service aces, and played solid defense once again.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 17-20065-SP-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: 10-26-2017 Time: 1:30 p.m. Dept: 1, Superior Court of California County of San Benito, 450 Fourth Street, Hollister, California, 95023 . Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court.
