A three-car collision on Shore Road left two people dead last Saturday. Yolanda Louise Hernandez, 56, of Los Banos, and her passenger Arnulfo T. Garcia, 65, of Hayward, sustained fatal injuries after her 2014 Kia Forte was struck by a 2017 GMC Yukon and a 2013 Kensworth on Saturday, September 23 at 7:39 a.m.

Garcia was the former editor-in-chief of the inmate-run paper San Quentin News. At the time of the collision, Richard Mendes, 48, of Hollister, with passengers Diane Mendes, 41, and N. Mendes, 1, were travelling westbound on Shore Road approaching Frazier Lake Road in the Yukon sport utility vehicle. Hernandez’s Kia compact car was travelling southbound on Frazier lake Road approaching Shore Road. According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Hernandez

didn’t yield at the stop sign at the intersection of Shore and Frazier Lake Roads and was struck by Mendes. Hernandez was then struck by the Kenworth heavy-duty truck driven by Ulises Cuevas, 27, of Atwater. Hernandez and Garcia sustained fatal injuries from the collisions. It’s unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a factor. The collision is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the collision is encouraged to call CHP Officer Tiffany Quintana at 408-848-2324.

County fair showcases horse riding skills Fair, 1

Kline was there watching her granddaughter, Chloe Diaz, compete for the first time in the Stock Horse Show. Kline was noticeably worried. But, the look of concern had nothing to do with the young rider’s skills “She’s a good rider,” said great-aunt Linda Kline. “All this waiting makes grandma very nervous.” Hollister resident, Monty Bryan, was there preparing for next year’s show with his tenyear-old granddaughter. “She plans to complete next year in this event,” he said. “We go to the horse show every year.” San Benito County Fair, Bolado Park, 9000 Airline Highway, Tres Pinos. In the cutting competition riders demonstrate how to “cut” a calf off from its herd. “It’s a skill you would use if you needed to doctor a cow. If a calf got sick, you would need to cut it out of the herd and you would be able to rope it to be able to doctor it,” Tobias explained. While riders waited for their time to compete, the center of the grandstand was set aside for horses to rest and exercise between events. “They’re like athletes,” Tobias said. “You don’t want them to go out and do anything cold.” Up in the stands, Debbie

Hollister Downtown Association names new director AMALIA ELLIS IS PRESIDENT OF HOLLISTER ROTARY Staff Report

Amalia Ellis takes the reins as executive director of the Hollister Downtown Association, the board of directors announced this week. Ellis succeeds Brenda Weatherly, who served in the role for the past 12 years. “I think the Downtown Association will benefit greatly from Amalia's background and past experience,” said Jan Holthouse, president of the association’s board of directors. “We are very excited to welcome her to Downtown Hollister.” Ellis steps into the role with a deep background in sales,

marketing, public relations and community outreach. Born in the Southern California city of Pacoima, Ellis moved with her family to Santa Cruz in 1989. Most recently, she has worked as owner and principal at Amalia Ellis Design, a company specializing in identity, print and web design, primarily serving local non-profits. She’s president of Hollister Rotary, a Leadership San Benito County alum, and former board member of CASA San Benito. Ellis has been an active member of the downtown association since 2016. The opportunity to steer the Hollister Downtown Association’s future came at the right time, she said. “I’d been looking for a new adventure, a new challenge,” she said this week. “I think the needs of the community as it

pertains to the downtown area is changing with the influx of new residents. I see a lot of opportunity here for business and entertainment options.” The Hollister Downtown Association was established in 1984 to revitalize the historic downtown to be the hub of social and economic activity in our community. The group organizes a full suite of events designed to bring people downtown throughout the year, including the farmers’ market, the Lights on Celebration, and the Summer Street festival. Ellis earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual communications and Associate degree in business. Since the start of her career, Ellis has worked in support of reputable building and landscape architecture firms, Paragon Design Group of Los Gatos, and SSA Landscape

Architects of Santa Cruz, United Way of Santa Cruz County, and eventually founded Amalia Ellis Design. Through her own design firm, Ellis has supported the marketing efforts of United Way of San Benito County, CASA of San Benito, Chamberlain’s Children Center, San Benito County Fair, Gabilan Kinship, and Rotary Club of Hollister among others. In her new role, she hopes to cultivate collaborative relationships to further the mission of the downtown association. “I think we can become a destination place for locals of all ages and tourists” she said. “We could do so much here.

Our proximity to the Pinnacles National Park, hiking and biking trails, and wineries are attractive assets for capturing the attention of tourists and bringing them into downtown for dining, entertainment, shopping, and other business services. With the construction of the new Fairfield Inn & Suites, I’m hopeful that more people will begin extending their trips in Hollister and see more that we have to offer in our beautiful area. I look forward to working with the community to accomplish our goals.” Ellis and her husband, Patrick, reside in Hollister, and are the parents to two sons.

OPINION GUEST VIEW JENNIFER COILE, PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS, 33RD DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION

Lettuce celebrate

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Data shows that Hollister is a bedroom community and half of the city's workers leave the county for their job. Yet, to create a sustainable and thriving community, creating more business opportunities within San Benito County is critical. What should local and county leaders do to create, foster or attract more business opportunities to San Benito County? Susan Mullen That is a great question and something we all should be putting a lot of thought to. What types of jobs are people leaving the county for? I guess that's where we need to start. One thing I would like to see is that when developers come to the county they are required to bring streets, roads, safety (turn lanes, traffic signals) up to capacity and that we don't build business or residential over the richest farmland in the world. Now, the important question is, what types of jobs do people leave the county for and can those jobs and relative salaries be recreated here or in the immediate area? Rebeca Armendariz Micro loans to small businesses, work with union apprenticeship programs, hold classes on how to start and maintain a small business—lots of stuff a city can do! Catherine Eva Booth Vaughan Give them the same tax breaks they are giving all of these developers. Give them liquor license. Get rid of the good ole boy attitude. Progress. Accept change. Elect educated politicians. Diana Hogan Saigo Silicon Valley has a lot of startups. I know a lot of folks in Hollister are working for major technology companies—if the city could somehow attract some of those type companies. Nants Foley If I could wave a magic wand,

I would make the 400 block a beautiful urban park. I would cordon off San Benito Street from Fourth to South Streets and turn the vacant lot at Seventh Street into another park. I would create a pedestrian street— think Santana Row. I would also streamline the government process. We have a hideous reputation for being ornery, reactionary and impossible to navigate at both city hall and the two building departments. Ruth Erickson Business support agencies need to work closer together to bring in more industry and business. The city and county need to streamline regulatory processes.

The Question of the Week was sent in an email and posted on the Hollister Free Lance Facebook page on Monday, September 25. Thank you to all who contributed comments.

COMMENTS Hollister City Council certifies 400 block petition Big mistake if they don’t build. The city is gonna lose a lot of money, and for what—an empty lot with tore up grass. Unfortunately, the mayor is gonna make the City of Hollister even more in debt. Great job mayor.

Yeah! We don’t want to be like San Jose downtown. Alan Littlejohn

People ask me, “Why go to the county fair?” Easy answer: “Because it is fun!” You can mingle with your neighbors, dance, eat oncea-year foods, listen, learn about local services, get hypnotized, meet local business owners, scream with joy on the carnival rides and admire the achievements of our community’s youth and craftspeople. It’s an American tradition going back to the first agricultural fair in Litchfield, Massachusetts in 1815. I have enjoyed the San Benito County Fair since I moved to Hollister in 2001. I think we have the most beautiful and comfortable fairgrounds in the world, with cool afternoon breezes off the ocean in Santa Cruz and oodles of shade under fabulous trees. Some have told me they like the scale of our fair because it’s easy to see just about everything in less than a day. An urban person like me is stimulated learning about several dozen breeds of chickens in the poultry building, especially when I know some of the children who raised them. I don’t feel the need to view three acres of chickens like at the larger fairs—in fact, that many makes me too tired to go and see the pigs, rabbits and goats. When Governor Brown appointed me to the board of the county fair in 2012, I decided my personal mission was to inspire more people to come to the fair. We started free shuttle service— thank you county express—the local talent stage, art activities, a baby station for a little rest from the noise while nursing or changing diapers and new categories for competitions. Don’t worry if you aren’t in 4-H or FFA, you can enter a video you made on your smartphone, or write a poem in English or Spanish. When you arrive at the fair, you will be handed a daily schedule (also online at sanbenitocountyfair.com). Special events included in the ticket price: Thursday night country music concert (7:30 p.m.–9 p.m.), Quilts of Honor Ceremony of handmade quilts presented to local veterans (Saturday 10 a.m.), Cowboy Church (Sunday 11 a.m.), Taste of San Benito with samples of local drinks and foods (Sunday 11 a.m.–1 p.m.), the Charros and Banda at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grandstand and the Agriculture-Horticulture Auction at 4 p.m. Sunday, a scholarship fundraiser sale of fruits and vegetables donated by local generous farmers. Three of my grandparents were born overseas. I’m conscious that some county residents did not grow up with the tradition of entering or attending a county fair. We offer bilingual entertainment such as Twinkle Time, Aztec dancers and Los Freddy’s and translated fact sheets about how to enter the fair. This is your county fair. The board of nine volunteers want to hear from you and any comments and ideas that would add to your enjoyment. I hope to meet you at the fair!

Funeral Mass Wednesday, September 27, 2017, 10:00am at St. Mary Church, Gilroy. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Gilroy. Reception to follow.

T

he light of my life for the last nearly 51 years was extinguished from this world last Saturday morning at 1:00am. She is now shining brightly in the next existence, however you wish to define it. For us, it’s God’s home, Heaven. She is chatting lovingly with our daughter, Briana who died in May, her Mom, Lee, and her sister, Lori, among many others.

What a wonderful experience for her! We are so happy she is free of these worldly chains, her tremors, her blindness, her inability to speak anymore, ambulatory deficits, and her mental torment of being a complete human being but trapped in a dysfunctional body. She was beautiful to the end and looked peaceful and serene after she took her last breath. Her kindness, patience, and love is now being shown to a whole new set of beings. We have no doubt that they are instantly loving her in Heaven as did everyone in this world when they met her. She was truly a special woman. A Mom, a Wife, and a Faithful Friend. Her wisdom was beyond compare. We love her, and always will. She was the best thing that has ever happened to me. Viewing will be this Friday evening, September 29, 2017, from 7:00 - 9:00pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Morgan Hill. Burial is semi-private but feel free to come. It will be at 10:00am Saturday September 30, 2017 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Morgan Hill off of Spring Street. Memorial services will follow at 12:30pm at South Valley Community Church, 8095 Kelton Drive, Gilroy, CA. Reception following. Come and share our love of Connie together. With love, husband Patric, daughter Erin Engles, husband Ryan, and their daughters Kelsi and Whitney; son Colin Kelly; granddaughter Maille Kelly-Garringer. Pre-deceased by daughter Briana.

J

ohn moved to Gilroy in 1973 to retire from his Construction Business with his wife of 60 years Margie Albaugh who passed away in 2010 after 60 years. From 1973 to well into his 80’s he was Gilroy’s “handyman.” He also was the backbone behind Margie’s passion— helping the poor, first through her work with the Crippled Children’s Society and then St. Joseph’s Family Center. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, having served as Grand Knight and was honored as Man of the Year for Gilroy in 1982.

He was a devout Catholic and managed the ushers at St. Mary’s for many years. We will all miss his joy for life, love of people, bad jokes and hugs. His beloved wife of 60 years, Margie, passed away in 2010. He is survived by five of six children, Bunny Albaugh of Yucaipa, CA, Bonnie Cochran of Oklahoma, Pamela McCarthy of Folsom, CA, Roy Albaugh of Colorado Springs, CO, and his Gilroy daughter, J. Chris Mickartz, son-in-law Larry Mickartz, granddaughter Stephanie Latronica Vegh, her husband Frank, and great granddaughters, Addison, Isabella and Alexis Vegh. Granddaughter, Kristine Latronica Lee, now lives in Colorado with her husband, Oliver and their children, Maddox and Ava Lee. He had 22 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. County further delays levee decision TOWN HALL FOR LOVERS LANE RESIDENTS SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 5 Nicholas Preciado Reporter

Nick Lovejoy

The San Benito County Board of Supervisors Tuesday further delayed a decision to repair the damaged Pacheco Creek levee system to an October meeting. Rainfall during last winter’s storms overwhelmed the levee system, which runs across multiple private properties, and created chaos across Lovers Lane, as well as parts of Shore Road and San Felipe Road. “There’s no question that myself and this board, we’ve let all of you down,” Supervisor Robert Rivas said. “All of you property owners. We absolutely were not prepared for the rains.” Last meeting, Rivas led a successful vote to contact impacted residents about indemnification to exclude the county from potential liability instead of deciding on a funding option. He said he was vilified on social media and told to ‘go back where he came from,’ which happens to be San Juan Bautista. But at Tuesday’s meeting, supervisors learned a majority of the landowners affected by the flooding didn’t agree to sign the indemnification requirement and a general release of all claims, citing issues of liability and the future maintenance and repair of the levee. Maintenance and repair of the levee would be handled by the currently inactive Pacheco Stormwater District, a landowner district that oversaw the private levee system years ago. It could cost the county an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 if they were to take over the operation and maintenance of the levee and its district. “We’re not experts about levees,” said Mahassa Altafi of Dara Farms, which was affected by the flooding. “There should

be more county involvement in getting that maintained.” On January 12, county inspection teams discovered a 104-foot long breach in the Pacheco Creek levee on Dara Farms’ property. Another significant, 80-foot breach occurred elsewhere in the levee system during a subsequent storm. “As an individual landowner, taking on an uncapped indemnity to the county represents too much of a liability for us,” Altafi said. “My family and I appreciate you authorizing staff to move forward with the idea of repairs to the levee system.” It would cost an estimated $491,500 for the county to fix the levee system on it’s own. A cheaper option is also possible through a United States Department of Agriculture partnership, but the bureaucratic process would mean a longer timeline in an already delayed process. District Attorney Candice Hooper, speaking as a Lovers Lane resident, called the agreement unilateral. “If the agreement was signed, the county could’ve gone out and slapped on a 2x4 and satisfied their part of the agreement and we would have had no recourse,” Hooper said. “That was my major objection.” She urged the board to allocate money for levee repairs versus having to make annual emergency repairs, which she also stated at the last meeting. “What’s the old saying, ‘you can spend a penny now to save a dime.’ That’s in essence what I’m saying. Spend it now so you’re not having to spend it each and every year. You know how much it costs with this emergency. We’re running out of time. The rains are coming.” Supervisor Mark Medina laid out the plan for an evening town hall on Thursday, October 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., which will cater to commuters who can’t make the

year. County supervisors are still debating on how to pay for levee repairs before the winter rains come again.

regular morning meetings. “I want to be the change agent and fix what’s wrong out there,” Medina said. “First we need to fix the levee, second we need to reactivate the water district and third we need help on

how to form all this.” He worried about the turnaround time and asked his colleagues on the dais for a timebound decision on October 10. “I want to be clear: we need to make a decision on October

10. We need to commit to something. We can’t just say we’ll wait. We’re paid up here to do a job.” Supervisor Anthony Botelho recused himself from the discussion.

California sees increase in Hepatitis A SAN BENITO COUNTY CURRENTLY UNAFFECTED Staff Report

Public health officials warn of an increase in hepatitis A cases throughout California. While San Benito County has no confirmed cases of the disease, county public health officials want residents to know how to prevent infection. Hepatitis A can spread through contaminated food or water. The virus can also spread through sexual contact or shared drugs with an infected person. Those most at risk include travelers to areas with high or

intermediate rates of endemic hepatitis A, gay men, users of injection and non-injection illegal drugs, people with clotting factor disorders and household members or caregivers of persons infected with hepatitis A. Local health officials provide vaccines to at-risk individuals such as homeless people and illicit drug users. “We are using a number of strategies to vaccinate the high-risk population, including sending health nursing teams directly to homeless encampments,” San Benito County Public Health Officer Dr. Gale Newel said. We plan to install at least six hand washing stations and portable toilets in locations

most accessible for at-risk populations and are recommending additional cleaning procedures effective at inactivating hepatitis A virus for public toilets.” There are currently 525 confirmed cases of hepatitis A throughout the state and 17 deaths, with outbreaks declared in San Diego and Santa Cruz Counties. Symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine and light-colored stools. Symptoms usually appear over a number of days and last less than two months, but for some symptoms can last as long as six months. Hepatitis

Persons planning an international trip should check the CDC Travelers’ Health website to see if hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for the intended destinations. A can sometimes cause liver failure and even death. To prevent the spread of hepatitis A infection, get vaccinated, wash hands frequently especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers or before handling food, don’t have sex with someone infected by hepatitis A, use your own towels, toothbrushes and eating utensils, and don’t share food, drinks or smokes with other people. Waterless hand sanitizers aren’t effective against hepatitis A, which is a hardy virus and difficult to inactivate. Therefore, thoroughly washing hands with soap and water is an important prevention and control measure, according to

County breaks ground on jail expansion $20 MILLION FACILITY EXPECTED TO BE DONE IN 2019 Nicholas Preciado Reporter

Nicholas Preciado

County officials gathered Monday at the San Benito County jail to break ground on a new $20 million expansion expected to be complete in 2019. “The money to construct these buildings comes about every 20 years, so when it comes you better take it,” said former Sheriff Curtis Hill, who served 34 years with the department, including 12 years as sheriff. “Because if you don’t, somebody else is going to get it.” Total project costs for the jail expansion are estimated at $25,016,394. According to county documents, the state is funding $20,053,000, of which $15 million was awarded in 2007 to expand the jail to address overcrowding. “The purpose of the project is actually pretty simple: we’re overcrowded currently because we have people here for longer terms that have increased needs,” said Captain Don Bradley, who said he was hired in 2013 specifically for the jail expansion project. “We need to have a physical plant that will deliver those services.”

The 142-bed maximum security county jail on Flynn Road will increase by approximately 25,000 square feet, including 72 medium-security, dormstyle beds in two housing pods. Each pod will contain three, 12-person dorms with a large program room in each dorm. The larger facility will enable increased opportunities for rehabilitation in an effort to reduce recidivism. It will include a new administration area, new booking and intake area, new medical area and new video visitation rooms. Bradley said the inclusion of rehabilitation facilities is mandated by California Assembly Bill 109, which the state passed in 2011 after being ordered by the federal government to increase medical and psychiatric care as well as reduce the state’s prison population. “As a result, thousands of inmates were pushed back into county jails,” Bradley said. “The term “Non-nonnon” was given to these inmates, which stands for non-serious, non-sexual, non-violent. If you talk to my staff, those words don’t fit anybody that’s here right now. They’re all pretty serious people.” County supervisors gave the $20 million

construction contract to Montana-based Sletten Construction in July. Two months earlier, they awarded nearly $1 million

to Vanir Construction to manage and oversee the expansion. “It’s a great day and momentous for San

Benito County,” San Benito County Supervisor Anthony Botelho said. “We certainly look forward to 18 months

from now having a bigger ceremony. The board of supervisors are certainly committed to these services.”

Hollister woman starts costume drive DONATIONS ACCEPTED UP TO OCTOBER 29 Nicholas Preciado Reporter

As kids and adults prepare to dress up like ghouls and goblins on Halloween, one local Hollister resident is collecting donations to ensure every

child has the opportunity to wear a costume. “I feel it would benefit those who simply cannot afford to buy such a luxury,” said resident Candace Ledesma. The idea for the the Halloween costume drive came from Ledesma’s daughter Alina, who attends Spring Grove School.

Call us for this weekend's specials

“Every year during the Halloween parade, I have noticed numerous children without a costume,” Ledesma said. “Whether it be for personal reasons, accessibility and/ or financial reasons, I feel all children should have the opportunity to partake in such events.”

Ledesma has partnered with local nonprofit Chamberlain’s Children to accept costume donations up to October 29. A possible second organization could also in the mix. “Both organizations will be sending me the ages, sizes and genders of the clients they serve,” Ledesma said. “I will

then compile specific requests for our community members.” For now, donations will be accepted for newborns to 18-year olds. For more information about donations, drop-offs and pickups contact Candace Ledesma at 831-801-9662 or at candace_ledesma@yahoo.com.

County workers rally amidst negotiations CONTRACT IS SET TO EXPIRE SEPT. 30 Nicholas Preciado Reporter

County employees rallied outside the San Benito County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday to demand accountability as contract negotiations continue. The workers, represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 521 are looking for wage increases, county health care contributions to offset increasing costs and continued holiday office closures established over the last few years. “For the last eight years, county workers have seen only a 3 percent cost of living adjustment while withstanding 16 percent in wage cuts and 270 percent increase in health care costs,” SEIU Communications Specialist Katie Smalls said in a press release. “The county is constantly losing workers to neighboring counties where the pay, benefits and working conditions are preferable.” The current county contract with SEIU Local 521 is set to expire September 30. Negotiations with the county began July 11. The union represents 270 county workers, not including an additional 50 vacancies the county has struggled to fill. Workers are proposing a 4.5 percent raise for the first year of the contract and a 3.5 percent raise in the second year. “We are optimistic that the county board of supervisors will

choose to invest in its frontline employees,” Small said. County officials said the county doesn’t comment on ongoing negotiations with represented employee groups. County employee Christina Chavez told supervisors Tuesday that she was one of two people in the entire county that audits the business property taxes. “My wages could have been 60 percent higher if I chose to work in San Jose for the same position, but I chose to work for San Benito County because Hollister is home to me,” Chavez said. “San Benito County is where my friends and family are and I want to provide my services to the community I know and grew up in.” SEIU Organizer Mark Weirick asked supervisors to keep a few things in mind during the negotiations. “Please keep in mind the county’s current proposal keeps our employees below the projected inflation rates for 2017 and 2018,” Weirick said. “It leaves our employees behind.” Inflation is projected at 3.4 percent a year for the next two years. According to Weirick, the county’s current proposal fails to address rising health care costs. “We appreciate your fiscal conservatism and responsibility with ensuring the county is able to maintain this commitment to its employees through their retirement, but what we’re asking you to take into account is what we’re proposing is absolutely within your means.”

The San Benito High boys water polo team was in a titanic struggle with visiting Monterey on Tuesday. Needing a victory to have a realistic shot of winning a league championship, the Haybalers fell behind by a goal midway through the third period after jumping out to a 4-1 lead. If was gut-check time, and Balers coach Brendan Sigourney knew it. Having lost to San Lorenzo Valley by a goal the week before, San Benito needed to buckle down and come through in a close match. “We’ve had some close losses in tournaments, and we needed to play well in the fourth quarter,” Sigourney said.

And that’s exactly what the Balers did, as they held off a tough Monterey squad, 8-6, in a key Monterey Bay League Pacific Division match. San Benito improved to 6-1 in division play, dealing Monterey its first league loss in the process. San Lorenzo Valley remains in first place with no losses in league action. “It’s nice to get this one and grit it out,” Sigourney said. “We needed to keep it together at the end.” Only the Pacific Division champion earns an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs, and in all likelihood the race will come down to San Benito, Monterey and San Lorenzo Valley. San Benito received all of its goals against Monterey from three players. Zander Bonnet and Josh Corrigan had three goals each, and Oliver Garcia two. The Balers led 4-1 after the first quarter only to see Monterey score four

unanswered, taking its only lead of the game, 5-4, with 5 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the third period. With Monterey seemingly having turned the tide of the game, San Benito looked in trouble. However, the Balers dug deep and was determined not to lose. With 4:33 left in the third, Bonnet got the equalizer

after he rose out of the water and slammed the ball into the back of the Monterey backstop, an emphatic goal that came when he was left in a rare position of being one-onone with a defender in the hole set position. With 2:12 left in the third and the Balers on a 6-on-5 advantage, Ceily Hepner delivered a perfect

cross-pool pass to Bonnet on the left side. Bonnet rifled a shot to the backstop for a 6-5 lead. Moments later, Monterey had a golden chance to tie things up; however, Balers goalie Casey Matsui made a terrific point-blank save to preserve the lead. Matsui made several dynamic saves throughout, ➝ Water polo, page 19

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Hunters are going strong emanuel lee Sports Editor

After playing together at San Benito High, Hunter Nye and Hunter Raquet have taken their skills to Monterey Peninsula College. Playing at the community college level is a big step up from the high school game, but Nye and Raquet have worked hard—no surprise there— and established themselves as starters for a Lobos team that is 2-2 entering Saturday’s game against Merced. In a 51-27 win over Gavilan last week, Raquet threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns, while Nye rushed for 129 yards, including an electrifying 79-yard TD run. Safe to say, things have come together for the duo, who carpool everyday from Hollister to Monterey with fellow 2017 San Benito

High graduate Alex Soto. “My goal is to keep on building with each game,” said Raquet, who ran for 115 yards and threw for 149 more in a 34-13 win over San Jose City on Sept. 16. “I knew coming into the season that I had to pick up everything really fast. I wanted to start; my goal was not to sit on the bench.” Nye and Raquet had tough tasks coming in, as they were competing for starting spots against returning starters. However, both players showed they deserved the starting spot at their respective positions. The 5-foot11, 205-pound Nye had to recover from off-season shoulder surgery before tackling summer workouts and the MPC playbook. Once Nye mastered his assignments, he took off— literally. On Nye’s 79-yard

TD run, he noticed one of the Gavilan linemen slanting on the inside. “I knew our O-line had to block down, and I had to hit the hole hard off left tackle,” Nye said. “I got to the linebackers and ran past them into the open field. Once I learned all the plays, I could read where the defense is and where my blockers are going to be. Then I could focus on making cutbacks behind my lead blocker. … I’m still running hard and breaking tackles.” Unlike in high school, when Raquet was operating a run-heavy offense, the 6-4, 193-pounder has plenty of more opportunities to throw with the Lobos. Raquet has plenty of responsibility in MPC’s run-pass-option offense, as he can run, pitch the ball to a running back or throw ➝ Hunters, page 19

HAYBALERS EARN A BIG WIN OVER MONTEREY

Chuck DeVita

San Benito High continued to run roughshod over Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division competition, knocking off Salinas in four games on Tuesday. Game scores were 25-13, 16-25, 25-21, 25-18. The Haybalers improved to a perfect 5-0 in division play entering Thursday’s match against Monte Vista Christian. The Balers’ Game 2 loss to Salinas was the first set they’ve dropped in five league matches. Annie Breger and Lauren Sabbatini had 15 kills each, Nicole Andrade had 17 digs and Kieley Hoskins finished with 45 assists.

NOT ON MY WATCH Balers goalie Casey Matsui makes one of his dozen saves in a crucial 8-6 win over Monterey Tuesday. San Benito dealt Monterey its first league loss, while bolstering its chances of a division championship.

program. I saw the potential early on, and I’m glad to see she hasn’t backed down from the challenge. I know in some sense she has even surprised herself. I have certainly pressured her a little, but she has responded extremely well.” Okamoto has basically played sports ever since she could walk. She grew up playing basketball, softball, tennis and soccer, with the latter always being her favorite. However, cross country has overtaken soccer as the sport she is most passionate about. Even though soccer brings Okamoto plenty of satisfaction www.GilroyHyundai.com

and joy, cross country has proved to be an almost spiritual and transcendental experience. “I like to see how much I can push myself, not just physically but mentally,” she said. “To push through that pain and get a PR, it’s the best feeling in the world. Sports have always been an outlet for me. It’s a great experience being a part of a team, and I appreciate the social aspects involved with sports as well.” Fully aware of her high ceiling, Okamoto is already thinking about the future—that’s how much she enjoys running. www.GilroyHyundai.com

“This is my first year of (doing extended) training, and I’ll be able to train more on my own and with my teammates in the future,” she said. After Okamoto finishes a race, she has thoughts on how she can improve, which in turn gets her excited to race again. It’s often said that athletes should focus on the present; however, Okamoto has shown the rare ability to focus on the present and the future. And for Okaomoto, that’s a beautiful thing. “I’m really excited for the next cross country season,” she said. “I can’t wait.” www.GilroyHyundai.com

“Hills tend to be one of my strengths,” she said. “Over the summer I trained hard doing a ton of hill repeats. I try to use that to my advantage going up, but also going down where I can carry my momentum. A lot of people slow down on the downhill, so it’s a chance to make a great move.” With a maturity that belies her age, the 14-yearold Okamoto is making up for lost time after having chronically sore knees in middle school. That is why Okamoto competed in just one track meet and zero cross country races while at Spring Grove School. It’s little wonder Okamoto never realized how much talent she possessed until the summer, when she clocked a fast time in the team’s time trials. A quick start to the season only further bolstered Okamoto’s confidence. “When I started to hit faster times, it opened up a lot of doors for me,” she said. “I realized I could go far in the sport if I continued to train hard.” And that’s exactly what Okamoto has done. Healthy for the first time

Hill runner

Robert Eliason

Lauren Okamoto decided to run on San Benito High’s cross country team this season to keep her in shape for soccer. Little did the freshman know how the sport would change her life. “I didn’t expect to fall in love with cross country as much as I have,” she said. “I never expected to get to a point now where when I wake up I think, ‘What workout am I doing today?’” Coaches love athletes like Okamoto because they have intrinsic motivation, or a pure love for a sport. Okamoto comes to practice everyday relishing the thought of improving and maximizing her enormous potential. That’s why Haybalers co-coach Ryan Shorey said before the season that Okamoto is a special talent who could go down as one of the best runners the school has had in recent memory. Okamoto led the San Benito girls team to victory in the first Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division Meet at Toro Park on Sept. 20. She finished second overall in 19 minutes, 52 seconds, setting a personal-record (PR) by one second. Teammate Elli Kliewer took third in 20:04, Mariah Changco was 11th in 21:08, Samantha Cortez was 17th in 21:40, Hailey Cross was 21st in 21:57 and Emily Quinby was 25th in 22:23. This was the third time the Balers have run at Toro Park

in a while—Okamoto is fully recovered from double knee surgery approximately 18 months ago— the freshman is running with vigor, focus and peace of mind. “The orthopedic surgeon said I had extra cartilage in my kneecaps, which caused a lot of cramping,” she said. “When I went in to get the surgery, they cleaned it all out. I did about six weeks of physical therapy twice a week, and they gave me stretches and exercises to do at home. The doctors were very optimistic that after physical therapy I’d be 100 percent, and I feel that way. I’ve come full circle and a long way compared to where I was before the surgery.” Okamoto said her parents, Denise and Jason, provided tremendous support throughout the surgery process. She also credited her main P.E. teacher at Spring Grove, Addie Hain, for being such a positive influence in her life. Okamoto also had David Kaplansky as a teacher, and said Spring Grove encourages kids to exercise and stay fit. “Spring Grove prides themselves on their athletics,” she said. “They have really good P.E. coaches and a great athletics program. They’re very serious about their running, and it’s a positive thing.” Shorey said Okamoto’s positive, can-do attitude is infectious. “Ultimately, Lauren is just the salt of the earth, and I couldn’t be happier to have her with us,” he said. “She is making moves to become the next standout in an already storied

this season, and Okamoto finds herself liking the venerable course more each time. “I’m getting more comfortable there, and I’m excited to hopefully PR the next time we go there,” she said. “As time goes on, I think I’ll get better.” Okamoto ran the Toro Park course in 19:53 in the race before the first league meet, passing several runners not just on the uphill portion of the course but on the downhill.

over his work ethic and battering ram ways from San Benito to MPC. Even though Nye is colliding with players who are heavier, he still manages to break tackles, especially on first contact. Both players gained 10 to 15 pounds of muscle in the last year, a downright necessity as they moved up to the college level. “I did a ton of weight lifting and really built off that,” Raquet said. “The extra weight and strength has helped me a lot when I have to help block defensive ends or go head to head with linebackers,” Nye said. Nye and Raquet spend plenty of time together—in addition to carpooling, they have all the same classes. The two both received interest from smaller out of state four-year schools, but neither were in those options. When it came to MPC, Raquet loved the fact that Lobos coach Mike Rasmussen was honest about his

chances of transferring after just one season (Raquet had a 3.5 GPA at San Benito). While not commonplace, some players at the community college level in great academic standing transfer after one season. “Coach sat me down and gave me the real deal,” Raquet said. “He didn’t sugarcoat things and say that he could guarantee he could get me out by December. I liked that because I wanted someone to be real with me.” As both players were going through the recruiting process, they realized MPC would be the best fit. “Knowing Hunter and I play well together, it was another advantage for us to stay together and go to MPC,” Nye said. Said Raquet: “It’s great playing together because we can back each other up, just like we did in Hollister. In the end, it worked out for both of us.”

lead, San Benito took control with goals from Corrigan and Oliver Garcia, whose shot from 8 meters away made it 8-5 with 1:37 to go. Monterey scored with 1:18 left, but the Balers got another key defensive stop to essentially seal the outcome. With 11 seniors on the roster, the Balers know it’s now or never to win that elusive league title. They’ve come close in recent years, only to be denied time and again. For San Benito, it’s all about staying together and cutting down on its mistakes.

Champions crowned San Juan Oaks Golf Club held its annual 36 hole, stroke play format championship tournament last weekend. Kevin Mifsud, above, won the overall title. Becky Reese, below, won the ladies championship. Other winners included Larry Beltramo in the first flight championship and Peter Voss in the second flight championship. Runner-ups included Bill Fixsen, Alfonso Castillo, Craig Archer and Sue Oku.

“We have a talented group of kids, and they can look very good at times,” Sigourney said. “But the mistakes are still there, and we’ll need to improve on those to take things to the next level. We need to put it all together for four quarters.” The Balers want to make teams pay for double-teaming Bonnet at the hole-set, and they’ve been able to do it on occasion. “Josh Corrigan had a big game, and we’re looking for more of our athletes to take advantage when they’re crowding Zander,” Sigourney said.
