GAVILAN COLLEGE HONORS TRES PINOS’ CHEF NAOMI RUIZ, FLAPJACKS OWNER, FOR SPIRIT AWARD Roseann Hernandez Cattani Editor
Flapjacks restaurant is a culinary gem in the historic town of Tres Pinos. Serving up American-style breakfast and lunch, the restaurant and owner, Hollister resident Naomi Ruiz, will be honored next
week with a Community Spirit Award by Gavilan College. Presented annually, the commendations honor the people and institutions that contribute to improving the quality of life in each of the communities the college serves: Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. The college’s governing board recognized the restaurant’s sponsorship of organizations such as the women’s basketball league in Santa Cruz and donations of gift certificates to Tres Pinos Elementary School for their school fundraisers. For Ruiz, who bought the
long-established restaurant two years ago, running the business has been a worthwhile endeavor. “I didn’t know what I was getting into at first; it was a steep learning curve for sure,” said Ruiz, who is a first-time business owner. “But it’s an adventure I would not take back at all, it’s been great. I’ve had nothing but a good time—and a little extra grey hairs.” Like the old motto: the customer is always right, Ruiz said Flapjacks aims to please. ➝ Flapjacks, 4

A potential measure would repair/replace leaky roofs, rusty plumbing and faulty electrical systems, upgrade classrooms, labs and career training facilities, expand the Veteran’s Center, improve access for students with disabilities, improve student safety and campus security systems, add a campus in San Benito County and classrooms at the Coyote Valley center, and renovate the college library to meet modern standards for technology and research. The Gavilan Joint Community College District Board of Trustees is considering placing a $248 million bond measure on the November 2018 ballot. A recent survey found a sample of district residents, from Hollister to south San Jose, were in support of the measure, which would fund facility upgrades at the college’s main campus in Gilroy and build a new satellite center in San Benito County. the results, but remained cautiously optimistic. “It’s a feasibility study and the whole reason Gavilan committed to the survey is because we wanted to take a measurement of how the community felt, wanted a holistic measurement of the whole district,” Rose said. Rose said 610 voters likely to participate in the November 2018 election were surveyed between Aug. 31 and Sept. 14 via phone and email, in addition to online data collection. Of those surveyed, 65 percent were in favor of a ballot measure and 27 percent against. The results were presented at the college’s board meeting on Oct. 10. Between June 2016— when the Hollister City Council entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement for the 400 block of San Benito Street—and its vote a year later to sell the property, the price jumped by 77 percent. Council members may have been unaware that they were transferring the public land at a deep discount for private development, depriving public agencies of $300,000. A 2015 appraisal valued the land at downtown Hollister’s busiest corner at $390,000. In September 2016, however, an updated appraisal placed the property’s market value at $690,000. The second appraisal, obtained by the Free Lance through a public records request, was not publicly disclosed before the council voted to revise the sale terms and dispose of the parcels. City Manager Bill Avera said the council was “probably” not made aware of the $690,000 valuation when it voted to sell the real estate on June 5, 2017. He did not provide the Free Lance with any documentation indicating the council had been notified of the second appraisal. The final sale of the property to the Community Foundation for San Benito County and local builders the Del Curto Brothers Group is on hold because of the upcoming vote on the proposed 400 block plan next November. Avera said he believes the city is stuck with the $390,000 price despite the updated $690,000 appraisal. “The deal was already done during the exclusive negotiating agreement,” Avera said. “They wouldn’t have had discretion on that anyway.” Mayor Ignacio Velazquez said by phone Tuesday that he had never

Garlic Showdown chef entertains at Olive Fest CHEF CARLOS PINEDA RUNS CULINARY ACADEMY FOR YOUTH Nicholas Preciado Reporter

Local chef Carlos Pineda demonstrated cooking recipes at last weekend’s San Benito Olive Festival. Hundreds of people attended the fourth annual event at the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos to sample olives, olive oil and other local goods. “The experience was great!” Pineda said, whose main dish was oysters. “We had a great crowd there. We were able to showcase what our program does, where it takes disadvantaged youth and puts them in an industry where they can better themselves.” Pineda, who won the Gilroy Garlic Festival Garlic Showdown hosted by celebrity Giada De Laurentiis this summer, oversees a nonprofit culinary academy run by Rebekah Children’s Services in Gilroy. The culinary academy started in 2009 as a mentorship program for disadvantaged youth ages 16 to 25 affected by probation, drugs and alcohol, truancy,
homelessness, teen pregnancy, or mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. The culinary academy has maintained a 98 percent job placement rate for the last four years straight and serves 90 different students in four sessions throughout the year. “I started out as a part-time instructor and moved up to fulltime where I’m at now,” said Pineda, who initially was asked to apply for a baking instructor position. “Now as program manager, I oversee the culinary academy itself and Kneaded Bakery, which is a social enterprise bakery.” Kneaded Bakery is located in Gilroy and employs highachieving students from the culinary academy. Students learn to mix, measure, bake and package products that are sold across the country. “We have some wholesale clients and we also create catering menus for people interested in us catering their event,” Pineda said. “Catering is huge for us. We primarily focus on hor d'oeuvres and appetizers.” The culinary academy is 100 percent grant funded and is currently in its second year of full funding due to fundraisers,

Pineda was born and raised in Gilroy. He knew early on that he wanted to be a chef and attended the Professional Culinary Institute in Campbell. The local chef has worked at
numerous bakeries and restaurants in Los Angeles, the local region and on the Monterey Peninsula. “I know both savory and sweet,” Pineda said. “I can take care of both sides of the world.”
Former SBHS chief sentenced for gun violation JOHN PERALES RECEIVED TWO YEARS OF COURT PROBATION Staff Report
Former San Benito High School Superintendent John Perales was sentenced to two years of court probation earlier this month for brandishing a gun at a person in a car parked outside his Gilroy house in October 2016.
He also received 20 days of jail that will not be imposed if he is compliant with his terms of probation; 120 hours of community service, and he will be subject to search terms by any law enforcement officer. He was also prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm for 10 years and he was ordered to have no contact and not come within 300 yards of the victim.
The prosecution had sought a tougher sentence, but conceded “Despite the People’s disagreement with the sentence, we believe the community is going to be protected because the defendant can no longer possess a firearm,” wrote Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Daniel Borca. Borca had recommended 60 days in jail, out of a maximum allowable term of one year. The

victim appeared in court before Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Edward F. Lee. Perales resigned from the San Benito High School District in January. Gilroy police said they had a complaint on Oct. 23 about Perales brandishing a gun at a man parked in a car outside his house the night before. The victim went to the police department and said
that while he was waiting in his car for a friend who lived near Perales, the superintendent pointed a gun at him and told him to leave. The man left, and the next day reported the incident to police. The Gilroy Police Department had sent the report to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office, which filed the charge Dec. 13 against Perales for brandishing a handgun.

Council left in dark about site’s value 400 Block, 1
city voters next November. Avera said the council’s action froze the process, but did not kill it. “The council didn’t void the development agreement,” Avera said. “We also have a tolling agreement with the developer that says the dates and performance standards in the development agreement are suspended until the vote in November.” The price for the property could remain at $390,000 if voters decided to stay the course and continue with existing plans for the 400 block at next year’s general election. However, another appraisal could be required after the election because of the time passed since the last one was made. Appraiser Steve Loos conducted the original appraisal of the grassy lot on Oct. 26, 2015, and placed the fair market value then at $390,000. City staff asked Loos to provide an updated appraisal in September 2016, three months after the Community Foundation and Del Curto Brothers Group had entered the exclusive negotiating agreement with the city. “Generally, banks or financial companies won’t accept appraisals more than six months old,” Avera said. “We needed to have an updated appraisal. That just verified or validated the fact that the value of the property was at least $390,000.” Community Foundation CEO Gary Byrne confirmed the agreed amount of $390,000. “That’s what we were asked to put a bid in for,” Byrne said. Loos, the appraiser who has

heard about the $690,000 valuation. Vice Mayor Karson Klauer and Councilman Jim Gillio confirmed they also never knew of that valuation before the Free Lance informed them of the higher appraisal on Tuesday. “From the very beginning I’ve said something’s wrong with the whole deal, not only the purchase price but they’re waiving all the impact fees for the project, which I thought was wrong,” said Velazquez, who has recused himself from all votes relating to the 400 block because of his ownership of the neighboring Vault. The mayor’s recusal does not prohibit him from knowing all facts related to the deal. “It’s been one heck of a sweetheart deal for a few people,” he said. Councilman Ray Friend did not respond to requests for comment. Councilwoman Mickie Luna declined to comment for the article. Luna also declined to comment on whether or not she was aware of the second appraisal in 2016. The City of Hollister used the $390,000 appraisal value during the request-for-proposal process to sell and develop the San Benito Street site. An agreement was eventually struck with the Community Foundation for San Benito County and local builders the Del Curto Brothers Group. Because of Velazquez’s successful petition drive this summer to halt the sale of the city-owned property, the City Council agreed earlier this month to place the fate of the 400 block in the hands of
LAND VALUE The vacant 400 block parcel in downtown Hollister was appraised for $390,000 in 2015 and $690,000 in 2016, according to city documents, a big jump in value in just a year. an office in Hollister, declined to answer questions for this story and said his work was exclusive with his client, the City of Hollister. The Free Lance obtained a letter sent from Loos to city staff in the development services department on Sept. 18, 2016 through a public records request. The Sept.18 letter said the appraiser’s opinion of the site’s market value in 2016 was $690,000. Loos calculated that at $35 per square foot multiplied by the 19,673 square feet of land that make up the empty downtown lot. The document says the analysis and conclusions found in the appraisal were “significantly”
based on information obtained from the city and county’s planning and building departments. “This information was used by the appraiser to form an opinion as to the legal physical nature and the current and future potential uses of the property,” Loos said in the letter. “This analysis does not indicate that any particular level of development potential exists or is guaranteed.” There’s also the question of the tax sharing entities who are still owed their money from the lack of development on the 400 block property for almost 30 years. The tax sharing entities—which include San Benito County, Gavilan
Community College, Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, San Benito High School District, Hollister School District, San Benito County Water District and the County Office of Education—either did not respond to requests for comment, declined to comment or weren’t immediately available for this story. “What happens if the sale doesn’t go through and it’s never sold? Then the tax sharing entities get nothing, forever,” Byrne said. “Maybe today it’s appraised at $1 million or it could go down to $400,000,” Byrne said. “An appraisal is just what someone places value on, it doesn’t mean it has to be sold for that.”

OPINION DAN PULCRANO CEO/Executive Editor
Helping Sonoma Rebuild
A
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
The fires in Northern California have left mass devastation in its wake. At least 41 people have died and nearly 6,000 houses have been destroyed. The fires will test an already stretched housing supply in the state. According to national news reports, in the fiveyear period ending in 2014, California added 544,000 households but only 467,000 housing units. What should state and local governments do to tackle this worsening housing crisis?
Roseann Hernandez Cattani
Tom Armbruster Maybe strengthen infrastructure before development. Have developers pay for most of it? Kristina DriggsWalkling A lot of people can’t afford houses that are being built in the area. California should prohibit or cap foreign investors from buying rental properties and driving up prices for residents. I looked into buying a tiny home and there are many restrictions like the minimum size of a home in many counties and cities. I saw an article from 2015 about tiny homes being investigated to help with homelessness. Where does this initiative stand? I think this could be a viable solution for many people if land were allotted for this purpose. It would be great to have a tiny home mobile community but allow people to purchase the plots. Mobile communities aren’t a good option because of land rental fees, HOA etc. Keith Snow Keeping all the people affected by the fires in my prayers. Thank you to all the people stepping up to help and all the firefighters, first responders, Red Cross and police. I feel the state should offer more resources and programs to help. They should have better planning and emergency shelter until people can get back on their feet. If I was in charge I would
already have these kind of plans in place. It takes time for people to rebuild their lives when things like this happen. We need to be ready at all times. Nants Foley This is an issue that has been a topic of discussion for years at the California Association of Realtors. California has not kept pace with the demand for housing over the last decade. That means this will indeed make it worse, but look at our community. We feel we are already overburdened with new homes coming in. That sentiment is echoed by communities all over the state. No one wants more crowding. I do not think this is an issue for government to tackle. Many corporations are already re-locating their offices in other states where there is affordable housing. Supply and demand will balance out eventually.
Question of the Week was asked in an email and posted on the Hollister Free Lance Facebook page on Monday, Oct. 16. Thank you to all who contributed comments.
company is like a family, and when disaster strikes one part of an organization— and communities we serve— it’s felt throughout. Our newspaper group publishes seven Bay Area weeklies, including the North Bay Bohemian, based in Santa Rosa. When devastating, uncontrolled flames struck Sonoma County on Oct. 8, the Bohemian’s office closed and staff scattered because of evacuations, smoke, closed roads and, in one case, a destroyed home. The first concern was for the staff ’s safety. Everyone kept in touch with one another to ensure that everyone was accounted for. We tracked down people who hadn’t checked in. Our second mission was to put out that week’s newspaper. During times of crisis, reliable sources of information to explain events, inform and analyze are crucial. Luckily our systems are virtualized and they were put to the test. We found out that we don’t even need an office to publish a newspaper. Even though cellular and Internet connections were spotty or went out in some cases, our editors, writers, graphic artists and sales team members worked in cafes, from home or out of the homes of friends, relatives and good Samaritans, often in nearby counties. Our third item of business was to establish the Rebuild Sonoma Fund. Within a day, we registered the charitable fund with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, created a logo and url and built a website to accept donations at rebuildsonomafund.org. Californians have a generous spirit, and we have been encouraged by the early donations. Readers can make a difference. We can help our Bay Area neighbors rebuild their lives and communities by getting money directly to the impacted areas. The fund has no administrative overhead and gets resources straight to the front lines of the relief effort. We have no control over when natural disasters strike, and this is one of California’s worst ones. We do have the power to make a difference, and by contributing to the effort, we can all be part of restoring some normalcy to fellow Californians who’ve had their lives turned upside down these past two weeks.
Donations can be made online at RebuildSonomaFund.org

Gun-wielding man arrested after road rage POLICE DISCOVER WIFE, TWO TEENS AND 4-YEAR-OLD IN SUSPECT’S CAR
road rage incident last Sunday, Oct.15. Police received a report at 11:30am of a person driving a maroon-colored Honda with dealer plates who brandished a handgun out the window after allegedly cutting off the reporting party’s vehicle as they travelled on San Felipe Road where the multiple lanes converge into one.
Staff Report
Hollister police officers arrested a man for brandishing a firearm at a motorist during a
Officer Rudy Rodriguez circulated the San Felipe Road area in search of the suspect vehicle. Once spotted, the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Driver Fidel Peña, 37, of Los Banos was taken out of the vehicle. Inside the car were his wife, two teenagers and a four-yearold child.
Officers recovered a handgun inside the vehicle. During the initial investigation, the family members denied knowing anything about what had occurred. After further investigation, officers found evidence to arrest Peña for brandishing a firearm and child endangerment. Peña was transported to the
San Benito County Jail. His family was released at the scene. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Officer Rudy Rodriguez at the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4331. weeks after vaccination for the body to respond fully, so now is the time to get vaccinated to have the best protection before the flu season begins. “Getting vaccinated is the best protection against flu illness,” said California Department of Public Health Director and State Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. “You can prevent missing work or school, visits to the doctor or hospitalizations, and protecting others from coming down with the flu.” A person with flu may be contagious and infect others before they even feel sick. Common symptoms of the flu include fever or feeling
Staff Report
San Benito County Public Health Services will conduct a free flu vaccination clinic later this month in preparation for the upcoming flu season. The free vaccination clinic will be held Thursday, Oct. 26 from 1:30pm to 6:30pm at the Veterans Memorial Building at 649 San Benito St. in Hollister. Flu season in California ramps up around late November or December. It takes a couple of
feverish, a cough and/or sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, chills, fatigue and body aches. Children may also have nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. To reduce risk, the California Department of Public Health recommends the annual flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. While anyone can get flu, pregnant women, children under 5, adults 65 years of age and older, and people with chronic conditions such as heart disease and asthma are particularly at risk for flurelated complications. Flu shots are needed every year to maintain the greatest protection because the vaccine
changes each season to match the circulating viruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only recommend injectable flu vaccines. The nasal spray flu vaccine (live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV) is not recommended for use this season due to concerns about the effectiveness. To stop the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses, you should also: • Stay home while sick and limit contact with others • Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve or disposable tissue • Wash hands frequently and
thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth Flu causes millions of illnesses each year and hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and sometimes thousands or tens of thousands of deaths in the United States. The state department of public health encourages Californians to contact their health care provider, physician’s office, clinic or pharmacy about obtaining the flu vaccine. For more information regarding the flu, please call Public Health Services at (831) 637-5367 or go to https://hhsa.cosb.us/

WELCOME HOME Gerardo Venegas, property manager at the new Buena Vista apartment complex in Hollister stands in front of one of the site’s amenities for residents, a playground.
Affordable housing added in Hollister BUENA VISTA APARTMENTS CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING Roseann Hernandez Cattani Editor
Before she moved into the new Buena Vista apartment complex in Hollister last month, Mary (who did not want to give her last name) lived with her two kids in one room at her parent’s house. “It was hard,” said Mary, who has a 20-year old daughter with special needs. For eight years, the mother-of-two had been on the waiting list for the Section 8 voucher program, which provides rental assistance to eligible low-income applicants. “I had been waiting for a long time for Section 8, but when I got it all they had were places in Watsonville and Santa Cruz,” she said. The Section 8 program for San Benito County is operated by the Santa Cruz Housing Authority. The Hollister resident did not want to leave the area as her daughter had one more year of high school to go. But, finding an affordable place to live was challenging. “It is hard to find housing right now. A lot of places are full up,” said Mary. Then, last year she found out that in her own town, a new apartment complex was being
built and they were accepting applications. “I turned in my application by the deadline and after waiting a month, they told me I got it,” said Mary. “The thing is, it’s a three bedroom. My daughter gets her own room.” The 41-unit complex at the growing west end of Hollister is a project of CHISPA (Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association, Inc.) a private, nonprofit housing developer based in Monterey County. Since 1980, CHISPA has built and renovated 2,268 single-family homes and apartments for low and moderateincome people in Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties. “We know how difficult it is for local people working local jobs to afford housing,” said Dana Cleary, director of real estate development. “Buying a home is impossible for many people, and apartments are expensive as well. The apartments in our building will be kept affordable for at least 55 years, so it is a stable source of housing for well into the future, regardless of what the rest of the housing market may look like.” The complex is consists of three one-bedroom apartments, 25 two-bedroom apartments, and 12 threebedroom apartments. There is also a community room, laundry facilities, playground and residents have access
to various on-site activities, including ESL classes that are given by Gavilan College. “We do this because we want parents to feel confident that their children are safe and occupied productively after school,” said Clearly. We also provide classes for adults who are interested. We look forward to hearing from the residents in Buena Vista what programs they would like to see.” The complex is also fitted with solar panels. “Solar is standard on our recent apartment buildings,” said Clearly. “For the past eight or nine years, we have used solar panels to provide some power for the common areas: parking lot lighting, laundry-room, and power for community room and computer room. Buena Vista solar panels will provide power for common areas and contribute power to the apartments as well.” On Friday, the complex will celebrate with an official grand opening. But, for many who are still looking for affordable housing in the region, the outlook remains grim. “About 1,100 people submitted a preliminary application for housing,” said Clearly. “So definitely more than there were units. The people on the list who were not reviewed will remain on the list. As units turn over, we will call people in order on that list and see if they are still interested in completing an application. “
The apartments in our building will be kept affordable for at least 55 years, so it is a stable source of housing for well into the future, regardless of what the rest of the housing market may look like —DANA CLEARLY, DIRECTOR OF REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT

Council preps for shopping cart ordinance HOLLISTER WANTS CARTS TO REMAIN AT BUSINESS LOTS Nicholas Preciado Reporter
Stock Photo
The time of unrestricted shopping cart usage in Hollister is coming to an end as city leaders move to adopt an ordinance that regulates the grocery store staple as a way to counter blight. The council conducted a first reading of the ordinance at its Monday meeting. “It’s important to know that we want to work with the businesses as partners and the residents,” said Mayor Ignacio Velazquez. “The goal here is not to penalize businesses or residents, it’s to make sure we don’t have abandoned carts throughout the city.” The ordinance will establish rules and regulations for businesses that use shopping carts, like Target and Nob Hill, so they maintain carts within their property. City Attorney Soren Diaz told council members the ordinance would remove blight from different locations in the city, including parks, streets and alleys. He highlighted a section that provided the “teeth” to enforce the ordinance. “This provides that it will be unlawful for any person to do any of the following, including: removing the shopping cart from the business premises, being in possession of a shopping cart that’s been removed from the business premises with the intent to temporarily or permanently deprive the owner,” Diaz said. “Also, tampering with shopping carts, including removing serial numbers from them, or any information. Then also using and possessing them

Councilman Jim Gillio brought up concern over how
the ordinance could affect small businesses and asked to see some outreach. Vice Mayor Karson Klauer wondered how people using shopping carts outside of business premises would be notified of the ordinance. “Do we have a plan to let people who have these carts know that they’ll no longer be able to have them?” Klauer asked. City Manager Bill Avera said he could work with code enforcement officers to provide some sort of notice when they come into contact with people using carts. Councilwoman Mickie Luna
asked if it was possible to send a notice out to residents in water bills. “Sometimes you see shopping carts in front of people’s homes,” Luna said. “Sometimes you do see them in residential.” Avera said that was possible. Resident Preston Artman asked Diaz if there was a cost analysis behind the ordinance and he wondered what effect it would have on seniors and others with fixed incomes. “There’s already laws in place at the state level,” Diaz said. “This is a primary concern of the legislature. So the laws the city is enacting at this time are
conducive and complimentary to laws that are already in place at the legislature level.” While Artman protested Diaz’s response, Councilman Ray Friend tried to ease tensions. “They’re already charging people more to replace the carts stolen from them,” Friend said. “I hear what you’re saying, but I think they’re already charging people for the carts they’re losing.” The first reading passed with a unanimous 5-0 vote. The ordinance is expected to be adopted during a second reading at a future meeting. It would go into effect 180 days after adoption.

Arson upends baseball league season FIELD AT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK IN HOLLISTER IS NOW A CHARRY MESS Nicholas Preciado Reporter
The San Benito Babe Ruth League had been looking forward to celebrating its 60th anniversary this fall until an arsonist lit up the group’s equipment at Veterans Memorial Park. “There was an arson fire set down at the field,” said Greg Lopez, president of the San Benito Babe Ruth League. “They lit an equipment shed on fire, the bleachers and one of our light poles.” The Babe Ruth League is a step up from Little

Once the issue of payment for damages is resolved, staff can then proceed to work with all affected stakeholders to determine the best course of action going forward.” A field cleanup day was held on Sept.23, when 25 volunteers worked to clean

Despite that, the situation has halted the local baseball league. “For our spring program, we have try-outs at the end of January and the season starts in March,” Lopez said. “I’m hesitant and worried that we won’t be able to make that deadline.” It’s not as easy as finding another baseball field to play on, as conflicts with other league schedules and field specifications can be a hindrance, he said. “Two hundred kids don’t get to play,” Lopez said. “The whole reason this exists is to give the youth something to do in our community

The arson, which took place on Sept. 7, not only forced the league to cancel the fall season, but San Benito County red-tagged the field as unsafe. “We’ve been reaching out for donations and had volunteers who helped clean up and replace some of the items,” Lopez said. “Unfortunately, with the cost of commodities and stuff, electrical isn’t cheap to replace. SAN BENITO QB WILSON CAN TAKE THE HITS emanuel lee Sports editor
Late in last Friday’s blowout loss to Salinas, Slade Wilson attempted to reach the end zone for a 2-point conversion. Before Wilson got to the pylon, however, a couple of Salinas defenders smacked him out of bounds. The hit drew a reaction from even the home crowd, as they recognized that Wilson absorbed some major physical contact. The thing is, that was the third or fourth time during the game in which Wilson took a big hit, only to get right back up. The 5-foot-9, 164-pound junior quarterback takes a beating but keeps on going, a major reason why the Haybalers are 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the
Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division entering Friday’s crucial contest with Aptos (4-1, 3-0). “I can’t really feel the hits because I have so much adrenaline going,” said Wilson, who rushed for a teamhigh 73 yards and added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Adam Mendoza in the loss to Salinas. “In Hollister, we’re coached up tough— that’s how it is. My body is built to take hits.” Wilson knows he’s just one hit away—as is every player who takes the field— from getting injured. He doesn’t play with reckless abandon, but he doesn’t shy away from contact either. Wilson’s toughness and maturity—he didn’t start playing organized football until his freshman year—is evidence that Wilson is a student of the game who possesses a tremendous work ethic. “I spent a lot of time in the weight room the last couple of years knowing one day I’d have to be ready for this,” said Wilson, who
was the backup quarterback in 2016. “I go into every practice knowing it’s another opportunity to improve. You have to make every single day a good day.” Wilson has completed 23 of 50 passes for 420 yards, with six touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 222 yards on 46 carries. Although the Balers had
a game to forget against Salinas—they trailed 28-0 at halftime and were never really competitive in a 42-13 defeat—Wilson said the team must improve. “Starting with me, I have to get better,” he said. “I threw a pick (interception) and let the team down a bit. The game should’ve been a lot closer, because we’re both good teams. We just
made too many mistakes and Salinas took advantage of that.” Wilson has developed impeccable footwork under the tutelage of Balers coach Bryan Smith, whose strength lies in teaching footwork fundamentals. Once the season is over, Wilson plans on attending some passing camps ➝ Wilson, page 18

ANZAR FOOTBALL
Jake Lindholm gets the job done emanuel lee Sports Editor
In a season of ups and downs, the Anzar High football team has been able to count on a couple of things: Their coaches and players like Jake Lindholm. The 5-foot-9, 148-pound senior makes an impact on both sides of the ball, as he plays quarterback, running back and defensive end. However, it’s the effort Lindholm gives on a daily basis and the fact that he hasn’t missed a single practice that has rubbed off on the team in a positive and meaningful way. “From day one, Jake has been a consummate leader on this team,” Hawks coach Kollin Kosmicki said in an email to the Free Lance. “I saw it from my own watching the guys condition before practices even started.
He’s a shining example for others to follow with his attitude about the game, focus and hard work. He hasn’t taken a practice off the entire season, and he hasn’t had a down game the entire season either. I believe those two facts correlate directly. From a mental standpoint, he’s one of the smarter players I’ve seen. He picks up concepts quickly and never forgets an assignment.” Lindholm has recorded a team-high 10 sacks entering Saturday’s 6 p.m. game against Woodside Priory. Over the course of his fouryear career, Lindholm has also played cornerback, linebacker and nose tackle. However, this season Lindholm has been an absolute monster at defensive end while being a steady presence at quarterback. Lindholm’s dynamic playmaking ability showed
in the team’s second game of the season against Stuart Hall last month. Midway through the second quarter, Lindholm batted a pass up in the air before coming down with it for an interception, a remarkable display of athleticism, instincts and tenacity. “Even though he’s relatively undersized for the defensive end position, he has a special talent for understanding angles and how to use his frame while getting around the edge of the line,” Kosmicki said. “He’s super quick and tough, though, which makes for a lethal combination. … When he really gets in a rhythm, you just have to sit back in amazement at the guy and how good he really is. He can make play after play after play, and he’s done so throughout the year.” ➝ Lindholm, page 18

and California Highway Patrol officer (he’s now retired). “I feel he connects with kids well because of his background.” Lindholm became enamored with playing defense ever since he started playing defensive end in his sophomore year. Upon having a conversation with his dad on great defensive ends in NFL history, Lindholm started to watch video of former Rams great Deacon Jones and other Hall of Famers. “My father was born in 1960 and was a Rams fan,” Jake said. “I always grew up hearing about the old-time players and how great they were. I looked up all the players he talked about, and saw they had a no-holds barred attitude in trying to get sacks. That’s what I try to do when I’m out on the field.” It’s that type of attitude—along with his talent—that makes Lindholm such a productive player. “His abilities are really diverse,” Kosmicki said. “He can throw. He can run.

He can catch. Of course, he can pursue the quarterback with the best of them. That shows with his sack production, but this guy is putting pressure on the quarterback all game long in every game. He could even play defensive back if we need it, but of course we can use him at just one spot at a time. And we need him where he plays on the line.” At 3-2, Anzar has already tripled its win total from last year. It’s been a feast or famine type of season for the Hawks, who have blown out two teams while being on the losing end of a lopsided decision twice. The Hawks’ upcoming opponent, Woodside Priory, is ranked 17th in the state by Maxpreps. com. The Hawks should be better equipped to deal with Woodside Priory after playing some rugged teams in Stuart Hall and Pinewood, squads that are ranked 22nd and 25th in the state, respectively. plays another rugged sport in lacrosse. Can you tell he likes physical contact? Going forward, Wilson has a goal to improve his leadership skills. “I like being a leader, and that’s why I love football,” he said. “For myself and everyone on the team, we need to step up and become better leaders.” Wilson already leads by example, as evidenced by the brutal takes he hits in every game. In Anzar’s run-heavy offense, the quarterback needs to make some great decisions. Once Lindholm receives the snap, he either keeps it, hands it off or passes it. Often times he’ll keep it, using his vision to find a small hole and running lane to go through that most players might not see. “As a runner, he’s got tremendous speed and has a knack for hitting holes and getting around the edges,” Kosmicki said. “But he’s also ultra-tough and a challenge for any tackler. Usually one tackler can’t bring down Jake.” Lindholm’s dad, Matt, is an assistant coach on the team and the baseball coach. Jake has been a standout baseball player the last three years, and he said the player/son and coach dynamic has been a rewarding time. “It’s been a great experience because you get a life coach and real coach in one person,” Jake said, referring to Matt’s former career as a drill instructor

as if nothing happened. He merely goes back to the huddle, relays the play to his offense and tries to make a play to help his team win. That’s exactly what Wilson will try to do against a tough Aptos squad on Friday. The Balers are coming off a lopsided defeat to Salinas, but the good news is they usually bounce back well the following week. It’s already happened once this season, as San Benito,
after dropping a 35-0 decision to Wilcox on Sept. 15, reeled off three straight wins entering last week’s contest against the Cowboys. Faced with another opportunity to rebound, the Balers are in a must-win game if they want to have a realistic chance of winning a MBL Gabilan Division championship. Salinas is 4-0 in league and Aptos 3-0, and it would be a huge upset if one of those teams finished
with two losses in league play. That means the Balers will have to run the table and get help in their title quest. In last week’s action, sophomore fullback Eric Green continued to impress with 69 yards on eight carries. Green was able to get out in the open field, break some tackles and bust off runs of 12, 15 and 28 yards. Steven Navarro finished with 61 yards on seven carries, including a 31-yard run in the fourth quarter.

IMPROVER Haybalers sophomore Trinity Mumm has made a dramatic jump from a year ago, when she was regularly shooting in the mid 50s to low 60s. This season, Mumm is scoring a half-dozen strokes lower, averaging rounds in the mid 40s to mid 50s. 100 yards away. Going forward, Mumm has a goal to stay in the 40s, with the low to mid 40s being optimal. That’s exactly what happened against Salinas, as Mumm shot a 45, second best on the team to Brewer-Pozzi’s 41. Gaining confidence with each match, Mumm has never been more eager or confident about her game. Neither has the Balers, who followed up the Carmel match with a nearly identical 235 score in a win over Salinas. Brewer-Pozzi was the medalist with a 41.

Over the last year and a half, Mumm has dedicated herself to learning the rules of the game—no small feat considering golf ’s rulebook makes encyclopedias look like they lack information. Mumm has also improved her ball striking, so much so that she has one of those distinct swings that can be spotted far away. “I can tell where she is three fairways away,” Orsetti said. “She has a nice swing.” Mumm’s most memorable shot came in a match played at Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links, when she hit a 9 iron to within six inches of the hole on a shot approximately

It’s a new era for the San Benito High girls golf team. The Haybalers are developing into a legitimate program where players are competing in the off-season and improving their game. In a Oct. 12 loss to Carmel, San Benito finished with what is believed to be a school record 234 score at San Juan Oaks. Monday, San Benito scored a 12-stroke victory over Salinas at Salinas Fairways Golf Course, finishing with a 235. It was far and away the best backto-back performances by the Balers in recent memory. Against Carmel, Kami Brewer-Pozzi had a teambest 43, Taryn Mills a 44, Trinity Mumm a 48, Bailey Carmichael a 49 and Baillie Figone a 50. Hannah Higgins also had a nice performance, shooting a 52 (although her score didn’t count in the team score since the best five are taken). Mills, who had shot just one sub-50 round all season, nailed a
personal-best by several strokes. Brewer-Pozzi has been the team’s best golfer the last couple of years, and this season is no exception. Brewer-Pozzi has consistently shot in the low to mid 40s, and there’s no telling how much lower she can go. Then there’s Mumm, a sophomore who continues to amaze with the quantum leap she’s made since last year. Mumm routinely shot in the mid 50s to low 60s last season, and she entered the 2017 campaign with a bit of uncertainty. “Before the season started, I wasn’t expecting to play and start in the first match,” she said. “But I did and still kept my expectations low. My hope was to take a couple of strokes off my average from last year.” Mumm has done more than that, as she is shooting at least a half-dozen strokes better compared to last season. Mumm’s improved scoring can be directly related to her improved mental approach. By focusing on each shot, Mumm never gets too high or too low, a trait all golfers must develop and possess if they want to improve. “Trinity has been

LEGAL NOTICES Public Notice NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF SAN BENITO COUNTY REGARDING TWO PROPOSED ORDINANCES (1) REGULATING CANNABIS BUSINESSES, BY THE ADDITION TO CHAPTER 7.02 OF TITLE 7 OF THE SAN BENITO COUNTY AND (1) MODIFYING AND READOPTING CHAPTER 11.15 PERTAINING TO PERSONAL CANNABIS CULTIVATION. THE PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 1, 2017, AT 6:00 PM (or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard by the Planning Commission) NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the San Benito County Planning Commission (“Commission”) will hold a public hearing on November 1, 2017, commencing at 6:00 P.M., or as soon thereafter as possible, in the Board of Supervisors Board Room, Administrative Building, 481 Fourth St., 1st Floor, Hollister, CA, to consider an ordinance regulating Cannabis Businesses, by the addition of Chapter 7.02 (“Cannabis Businesses”) to Title 7 of the San Benito County Code and an ordinance modifying and readopting 11.15 of the San Benito County Code. Applicant/Proponent: San Benito County. Location: San Benito County (county-wide, unincorporated area). Environmental Review. Exempt, including but not limited to State CEQA Guidelines 15061, subd. (b)(3) and 15308. The Cannabis Businesses ordinance (Chapter 7.02) explicitly prohibits both medicinal and non-medicinal cannabis business activities (defined in state law as “commercial cannabis activities”) except as would be expressly allowed by Chapter 7.02. Section 7.02.040 sets forth the requirements for Cannabis Permits, §7.02.050, creates the Cannabis Regulatory Program, §7.02.060 establishes Cannabis Permit Types, §7.02.070 establishes the application requirements, §7.02.080 establishes restrictions where cannabis business facilities may be located and establishes other requirements, §7.02.090 establishes grounds for denial, non-renewal, suspension or revocation of a permit, §7.02.100 establishes procedures for suspension or revocation; §7.02.100 establishes requirements for each classification of permit, §7.02.120 sets forth requirements for records; §7.02.130 establishes that Chapter 7.02 is contingent upon a tax on cannabis businesses DATE 00,being 2016approved within 18 months; and §§7.02.140 and 7.02.150 provide that any violation of the Chapter is a nuisance, and sets forth enforcement provisions. Alternatively, the Planning Commission may consider
recommending that the Board not adopt an ordinance relating to Cannabis Businesses, or may recommend that the Board adopt a “ban ordinance”, prohibiting such activity. The proposed personal cannabis cultivation ordinance (Chapter 11.15) explicitly prohibits the cultivation of more than six (6) plants and provides for the reasonable regulation of personal cultivation. Chapter 11.15 was previously adopted by the Board of Supervisors, but is being modified and readopted. Changes include, but are not limited to, that under the new ordinance, outdoor cultivation in any amount would be prohibited. The new ordinance also eliminates the registration requirement under Chapter 11.15. The Planning Commission will review the proposed ordinances and provide a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. Written comments may be submitted to Chase Graves, at cgraves@cosb.us, or comments can be sent by US mail to: Chase Graves, Clerk of the Board, 481 Fourth St., Hollister, CA 95023. Verbal and written comments may also be submitted at the public hearing. If you challenge the Board’s decision in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to San Benito County, Clerk of the Board at 481 Fourth Street, Hollister, CA 95023, at, or prior to, the public hearing. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
