Jamie, the holiday elf-intraining and mascot of the Lights On Celebration in downtown Hollister, has been busy putting the final touches on this year’s annual festivities. Sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association, the event kicks off at 10am on Saturday at Seventh and San Benito Streets with a holiday car display featuring Central Coast Muscle Car Classics, voted best car club at the summer’s Street Festival show. Thirty trees decorated by local nonprofits and donated by Bourdet’s Christmas Trees will be on display in front of Veteran’s Memorial Building. The trees will be given to local county families in need. The main event, a parade of more than 80 dazzling lightadorned entries will start at 5:30pm on Haydon and San Benito Streets, proceeding north on Fifth Street. This year’s parade theme is “Winter Wonderland” and is expected to bring more than 10,000 people to the city’s downtown. After the parade, starting at 7pm, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in front of the Veteran’s Memorial Building. Cost is $10 for a 5" x 7" photo with the festive couple.

The San Benito County chapter of the national nonprofit organization Birthday Cakes 4 Free started last spring and group members have been bringing cakes, cupcakes and muffins to low-income seniors and children ever since then. Since the group started in June, its members have delivered about five cakes a month to the Emmaus House, Chamberlain's Children Center and the assisted living facility Whispering Pines Inn. Now they're looking to expand to individual homes in the county. A2

Fire restrictions and shooting limitations implemented over the summer have been lifted on public lands in San Benito County by the Bureau of Land Management Central Coast Field Office. While target shooting is reopened, the agency asks the public to be careful and follow safety guidelines including refraining from driving a vehicle onto dry grass or brush, to always carry a fire extinguisher, shovel and bucket or water and to get a permit for any campfire or use of portable gas stoves. Hot bullet fragments and exploding targets from recreational shooting can spark a wildfire. As part of the Leave No Trace campaign, gun enthusiasts are required to pack up all spent shells.

There is a new elf in town that wants county residents to remember to shop local this holiday season. Called “Holly Benito” by the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, which is behind the shop local initiative, the plush elf is displayed at 17 retailers in Hollister and San Juan Bautista. Wherever the little elf is displayed shoppers can enter to win gift certificates at participating retailers during a special drawing the first week of December. “This is the third year we have done a shop local campaign and the first time we’ve used the elf,” said Juli A. Vieira, chamber president and CEO. The campaign runs through Nov. 30. Participating businesses include Calvista Insurance Agency, Inc., DLG Printing, Dona Esthers Mexican Restaurant, Irma's Fashions, The Farm Bertuccio's Market, Margot's Ice Cream Parlor, San Benito Bene, Bill's Bullpen Baseball Cards & Comics, A Tool Shed Equipment Rentals and Ohana Shave Ice. Drawing winners will be announced on the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce Facebook page next month. The Epicenter Wine Room on San Benito Street is set to open in the coming months, as well as the GardenMart, a combination nursery and wine tasting room on Seventh Street. Vieira said the new business openings is a very positive outlook for the community. “There is more activity,” she said. “But I really have to stress that we have a lot of commuters and I hope that the community stays involved and shops local, instead of doing all their shopping before they drive home.” The new wine tasting rooms and success of downtown events like Lights On Celebration, the Hollister motorcycle rally and the summer Street Festival car show has inspired Ellis to work on a new campaign that will hopefully launch in the not so distant future. “It is an “eat, play, shop downtown Hollister” campaign,” said Ellis. “We want people to know they can do wine tasting, see a performance at the Granada, and then have dinner at a local restaurant. We want people to spend time and make a day of it.”

Downtown Association said a handful of downtown shops including Ohana Shave Ice and Bella Charm, a boutique that sells “trendy bling to western swing” will be participating. Also on Saturday is Hollister’s Lights On Celebration, which Ellis said is another reason for locals to stay all day in the downtown district. “Shop Small Saturday and the Lights On celebration is a big draw for downtown businesses. We have over 10,000 people attend and it’s an allday event so historically people have dinner at downtown restaurants, visit the shops and stay for the parade. It’s a huge opportunity to have people come and stay downtown and spend some money,” she said. The downtown district also recently welcomed its newest business, the Aroma Cellars wine tasting room at 650 San Benito St., Suite 150. The grand opening of the hot new venue that features fine wines, Italian food and live music was on Nov. 9.

First flu death of season brings warnings The first influenza-associated death of the 2017-2018 flu season has been reported in the region. The individual who died in Santa Clara County was an adult under age 65 and the death was reported earlier in November. Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County health officer, said the individual had other medical conditions that put the person at increased risk of severe complications from influenza, or the flu. The individual had not received this year’s flu vaccine. Due to medical privacy laws, further details about the individual will not be released.
No other cases of severe flu have been reported to local health officials this season. Only deaths due to laboratory-confirmed flu among individuals aged 0-64 years are required to be reported in California. Reporting of non‐fatal cases of laboratory‐confirmed flu requiring admission to an intensive care unit is recommended for persons aged 0‐64, but it is not required in California. The criteria for reporting flu deaths are set by state and federal public health officials. Flu is a contagious respiratory
illness caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms of the flu may be similar to those of the common cold, but are usually more severe. The flu season continues through spring each year. While everyone six months and older should get vaccinated every year, it is especially important for pregnant women, children younger than five, adults 65 and older, and those with chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, asthma, and diabetes. In addition to getting the vaccine, health officials advise individuals to take the following
steps to protect themselves and loved ones from flu. • Cover your cough and sneezes with a tissue. • If you do not have a tissue, cough into your elbow. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. • Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Stay home when you are sick, and keep your children home when they are sick. • Stay home until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours.
Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue. People at higher risk of severe disease who show flu symptoms should contact their medical provider. Medical providers may prescribe antiviral medications that reduce the severity and duration of illness. Antibiotics are not effective against the flu. Individuals are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider to get their flu shot. The vaccine is also available at pharmacies, retail stores, and is offered by some employers.

DA, school board keep silence on Dabo New Dabo, 1 “It is a serious case,” Fortino said last week. “I think it warrants an investigation.” “Now that it’s been exposed, there are others who have said they have a similar experience,” he said. On Nov. 13, Superior Court Judge Marjorie L. Carter ruled in favor of the foundation in its suit against Dabo, owner of a Hollister liquor store and president of the San Benito County Board of Education. Carter affirmed the facts presented by foundation lawyer John Clark, that Dabo systematically drained more than $640,000 from a charitable trust for his own purposes. She ordered that he pay the foundation $1.74 million in damages, plus an estimated $85,000 in legal fees. Dabo did not show up for the trial, and has not responded to requests for interviews. Last week he broke his silence by posting a comment on a local community website. “I made a costly mistake in not securing the money and I take full responsibility for that,” he wrote. “But all of the false and twisted stmts [statements] are exactly that. I am so sorry to
everyone that is affected by this.” The foundation was to have been the designated beneficiary of the remaining principal in the fund after the deaths of Barbara and Tony Matulich, who had created it in 2001. Barbara Matulich died in 2012; Tony Matulich died in 2003. A few weeks before the trial of the civil suit, Hooper was again asked if she would pursue an investigation of possible criminal charges against Dabo. Again she declined. Hooper told Benitolink, a local community website, that she wanted to wait until after the civil suit had been resolved before deciding whether to look into Dabo’s handling of the trust funds. After the trial—at which more than 230 pages of bank statements, canceled checks and emails told a tale of electronic transfers of the trust fund cash to Dabo’s personal accounts— Hooper declined to respond to repeated questions from the Free Lance, asking whether her office was going to initiate an investigation, given the heft of the new evidence. The district said she has been busy assisting her ailing 90-year-old father.
Dabo’s status as president of the county school board apparently has not been affected by revelations in the Nov. 13 trial of the civil case. County schools Superintendent Krystal Lomanto’s only comment last week was, “The County Office of Education Superintendent has no comment at this time.” The school board next meets at 4:30pm, on Thursday, Nov. 30 in Hollister. Byrne said the district had filed the lawsuit only after repeated attempts to find out what happened to the money in the Matulich Charitable Trust. “We had tried, for six to nine months, knocking on his door trying to find out where the money went,” said Byrne. “We really didn’t have any other choice, because we had no response from Mr. Dabo,” said Fortino. The foundation’s leadership, which doesn’t expect to actually get any of the money awarded in the court judgment, was concerned there might be other victims. That also was a motivating factor in trying to convince the district attorney to investigate. The FBI might have jurisdiction in the case, according to a spokesman
for the San Jose office, if the trust money was deposited in a national bank, where its funds might cross state borders, possibly making misuse of those funds a federal crime. The Matulich funds were in the Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, a California financial institution that was acquired by Union Bank, a national bank. Prosecution of similar cases in increasingly common, as national concerns have grown about financial consultants taking advantage of elderly customers. In the Dabo case, the civil suit involved violation of California probate laws, but the initial fund transfers occurred while Barbara Matulich was still alive. In April, a 63-year-old financial consultant in Minnesota was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $5.1 million from several investment advisory clients. “The defendant stole from clients who trusted his professional investment advice,” said an FBI spokesman. “The sentence sends a clear message that those who abuse their positions of trust for personal gain will be brought to justice and held accountable for their crimes.”
MITCHELL DABO RESPONDS Here is the complete text of Mitchell Dabo’s only public comment on a Nov. 13 court ruling that he illegally transferred more than $640,000 from a charitable trust to his own accounts, then loaned most of it to a business associate for a failed real estate venture. “I made a big mistake not being at the trial, but I did not want to be in court without representation. “The other side slanted everything their way. I loaned [the late Jack] Tyler $490,000 we were not in a partnership at the time. He was going to use the money to finish a custom home that he was building. At the time of the loan there was over 2 million in equity. When he had difficulties paying the interest he was in the process of refinancing the properties, but unfortunately he died before doing that. Even with R/E prices plummeting there would have enough to pay back the loan. The partnership borrowed money from a private lender to buy the other property and one of the partners took it over after Tyler died. “Trust money was never used and the partnership never defaulted. With Mrs. [the late Barbara] Matulich’s permission I did transfer money into my account, but I always promptly put it back. “For instance, I transferred $2,700 and put it back 2 days later, she was okay with that. When interest came in it was given to Mrs. M, when enough payments came in Mrs. M’s life ins was paid (indirectly). Many times acct balances were close to zero, because everything was paid out. “When the Matulich’s set up their Trust SBCCF [the Community Foundation for San Benito County] was not the beneficiary, they had made Monterey CO Comm Foundation the beneficiary, so when Mr. Matulich died [in 2003]the beneficiary was MCCF. “When Tyler stopped payments, I used principal to continue to pay Mrs. M’s interest and life ins prem and annual tax exps. Tyler was a good man, but cancer took him quickly. “I made a costly mistake in not securing the money and I take full responsibility for that. But all of the false and twisted stmts are exactly that. I am so sorry to everyone that is affected by this.”

Should Mitchell Dabo resign as president of the San Benito County Board of Education in light of the disclosures in Superior Court that he moved more than $640,000 from a charitable trust for his personal use? What do you think? David Crandall: Yes, absolutely. Plans for his removal from the board should be taking place. Debbie Cusic: Yes, removed and every aspect of finances for the school he had authority over should be thoroughly audited and scrubbed. Transparency is for the best government. Ethical morality should be guiding our schools and government officials at every level. Sylvia Ernani: Yes, of course. I don't understand why he wasn't at least put on leave or suspended when the allegation was first brought out. And any school finances he was in charge of or had access to should have been investigated also. Samantha Zaragoza: Have him work out his term and 100 percent of his pay goes for retribution. You know the county isn't going to see a penny
of the money from the lawsuit. I think there are potholes to be filled and garbage to pick up, too. Lee Roberts: Yes. They need to bring in the feds with a forensic accountant to scrutinize all his financial dealings. When white collar crime is only prosecuted in civil court the risk is worth the reward to gain millions of dollars because there's no personal liability or prison time involved. This man is a financial predator and now he's free to repeat his scams on more unsuspecting and elderly victims. Dabo must have dirt on some important people to not be in prison. Jack Kimmich: Oh yeah great role model. Make him treasurer and retirement fund manager while we're at it. Dump his butt. Why is this even a question?

The following was submitted by email to the Morgan Hill City Council as public input prior to the council’s scheduled Nov. 15 workshop on the California High Speed Rail project. I am a past President of Gilroy-Morgan Hill Bar Association, a member of the Transportation Lawyers Association, and past Chair of TLA's Legislation Committee. I have practiced transportation law in the South County for 38 years, and have done post-doctoral study of transportation law and policy at the Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies, and at Transportation Research Board, Georgetown University; and at the Library of Congress. I am a graduate of SJSU, and the University of Santa Clara Law School, and I have 52 years of transportation industry experience dating back to my junior year at Cupertino High School, when I worked for the SPRR, and later at UPRR in San Jose (1970-1980). My comments are personal, and not made on behalf of a client or any professional organization to which I belong. For a state that cannot afford adequate fire suppression, or water storage, it is bad public policy to add to the public transit boondoggles that the taxpayers (mostly motorists) already shoulder, under the worst tax/fee burdens among all the states. What the California High Speed Rail Authority is doing, which is not what voters voted for in Prop. 1A in 2008, is contrary to the conclusions of both the President's Blue Ribbon Commission on Transport Funding, and the California Transportation Commission. Both of them concluded that we ought to fund transport with "user fees." Giving away transit rides, by any mode, with fares near zero, diverting the costs to motorists' gas and diesel taxes, is unfair, unsound, and unsustainable transport policy. Taxing people out of their cars is a public policy plunging us down the Road to Serfdom, intended to cripple our state's economy. We already pay our taxes for many wasteful boondoggles like Amtrak, Caltrain, ACE Train, BART, Light Rail and county transit, when it would be much cheaper for taxpayers if we just purchased each transit rider his own BMW, or paid his taxi fare, or his Uber fare. California's voters voted for selfsufficient high speed rail, not a Supermassive Black Hole added to the already intolerable public sector transit Black Holes that our lost leadership forces us to subsidize. This bad public policy is making California into Northern Venezuela. I urge local leaders to support the repeal of Prop. 1A. Caveat viator. A
Celebration of Life for Frances Palmtag will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Church hall in Tres Pinos starting at 11:00am. Frances left her beloved Hollister on Friday September 22, 2017 at the age of 95 years. She was the oldest and last remaining of the three Palmtag girls – Hazel Palmtag Medaugh and Charlsie Palmtag Ross – born to Carl and Myrtle (O’Connor) Palmtag in Hollister. Frances grew up helping on her father’s farm. Picking prunes and cutting apricots each summer were some of her fondest memories. During World War II, she worked at Hollister Navy Air Base, and told stories of attending USO dances in Hollister and at Fort Ord. After the war and with her degree in education from Sn Jose State, she began her long career as a teacher. Everywhere her family goes in Hollister, they meet adults who had Miss Palmtag as their teacher! Her impact upon children was far reaching including her students, vacation bible school children, and her niece, nephews and their children. Frances loved to travel with friends and especially enjoyed trips to the South Pacific, Germany, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand along with family camping in Death Valley and Fremont’s Peak. Frances was one of Hollister’s biggest fans and supporters, and she devoted her retirement to enriching the town. Her personal involvement in organizations that promoted a stronger community and country included Retired Teachers Association, Hollister Sister City, Second “Indianhead” Infantry Division Auxiliary, Red Cross, Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation, Hazel Hawkins Auxiliary, Gem and Lapidary Club, San Benito County Hospice and the San Benito County Historical Society. As a representative of the Hollister Sister City organization, she traveled twice to Japan. Frances also received the Heart of Hazel award from the Hazel Hawkins Foundation. In 2015, Frances was honored at the Community Foundation’s National Philanthropy Day dinner for her work with the Historical Society. Frances is survived by her nephew Ronald Ross and wife Mary Hubbell of Hollister; niece Nancy Ross Joynt and husband Jeffrey Joynt of Paso Robles; nephew Andrew Ross and wife Barbara Britten of Taos New Mexico; three great nieces and nephew, and a great-great nephew. Donations in remembrance of Frances may be made to: San Benito County Historical Society at 498 Fifth Street, Hollister, CA 95023.

t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Edwards, a helpful, caring and loving woman to all who knew her. Margo was born in Tacoma Washington, and spent her childhood in San Francisco, Hillsborough, and San Mateo. Margo lived in Gilroy for ten years, and her last ten years in Morgan Hill. She enjoyed working with children, and she had a children’s day care center in San Mateo. For many years, Margo volunteered as a tutor at Boccardo Family Living Center in San Martin, helping children with their homework. Margo also loved the outdoors, and enjoyed camping, and volunteering as a Docent at Gilroy Gardens. Rest in Peace, Margo.

ichard Duane Van Pelt, 67 of Paso Robles lost his short battle with cancer on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Born in Delano and raised in Fresno, he joined the Navy which lead him to meet his wife Frances at Moffett Field. At the age of 23, he married Frances then 20 and they started their life together in San Jose. Eventually, they moved to Gilroy, where they raised their three children. In Gilroy, he worked at Nob Hill as a controller and then left to start his own accounting business. Richard spent the last ten years of his life in Paso Robles where he moved to be near his son’s and grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren dearly and wanted to live close to see them grow and have a strong bond with them. That he did. He loved working in his garden, building things in the garage, fixing the house up and going to the movies. He was an honest man, who treated others equally and always wanted to do what was right. He leaves behind, his wife of 44 years, Frances Van Pelt of Paso Robles, children, Jon and Robert Van Pelt of Paso Robles and Jennifer Ellis of San Rafael. Daughter in-law, Kelly Van Pelt and Son in-law, Braeden Ellis. Grandchildren: Maddie, Chloe, Abigail, Logan, Bryson, Jordyn Van Pelt and Hudson Ellis. His celebration of life will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 1pm at Saint Rose Catholic Church in Paso Robles. A viewing will be held the same day from 9am - 11am at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home. A wake will be held following the mass at CaliPaso Winery in Paso Robles.

arbara Hilda Mitchell Harkins was born in April 1962 at old Wheeler Hospital in Gilroy. She gently passed away at home among family in the town she loved, November 3, 2017.
Ken was born in Flint, Michigan in October, 1950. He graduated from high school at the Stony Brook Preparatory School, in Stony Brook, New York, and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He made his home variously in California and Hawaii. He was employed by General Electric in San Jose. While in Hawaii, he was a marathoner and triathlete. His greatest joy was playing his piano. He was an accomplished musician and pianist. He was active in both the United Methodist and Episcopal churches in Morgan Hill. He is survived by his mother, Annie Ruth Rhoads, of Charlotte, North Carolina; his sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Joe de Gier, of Marina, California; and his sister and brother-inlaw, Annette and David Vander Ploeg, of Glenview, Illinois. He was a loving uncle and is survived by five nephews, Peter and Martin de Gier, of Monterey, California, and David, Charlie, and Gerrit Vander Ploeg of Chicago, Illinois, as well as nine great nieces and nephews in Illinois. Contributions in his memory are suggested to the Morgan Hill United Methodist Church or to St. John The Divine Episcopal Church in Morgan Hill.

rank Shoji (Panch) Fujita, 90, passed away on October 25, 2017. Frank was a lifelong Morgan Hill resident and a highly respected and productive strawberry farmer. Frank worked hard all his life but also had a full, rich life by enjoying his passions of fishing, golfing and watching his favorite bay area sports teams. He is survived by his wife, Satsuki Fujita, sisters Miyeko Yuki and Shizuko Kawamoto, and brother Yutaka (Tomie) Fujita. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Miyako Kawaguchi and Fumiye Mukai. Adored and admired by his entire family, Frank leaves behind fifteen nieces and six nephews and a countless number of great nieces and great nephews. Frank was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Although San Benito County has no confirmed cases of hepatitis A, health officials are working closely with city officials to conduct prevention and control measures. These measures include providing hepatitis A vaccine to atrisk individuals, including persons experiencing homelessness and/or illicit drug users, providing vaccine to city and county employees who interface with high-risk populations, and installing portable toilet and handwashing stations in locations most accessible00, for2016 high-risk popuDATE lations. Hollister City Hall on Fifth Street, as well as East and Third Streets. California continues to experience an increase in cases of hepatitis A infection. As of Oct. 20, there were 610 probable and/or confirmed cases of the disease throughout the state and 19 deaths. Symptoms of hepatitis A include: jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, and light-colored stools. Symptoms usually appear over a number of days and last less than two months. However, some people can be ill for as long as six months. Hepatitis A can sometimes cause liver failure and even death. The hepatitis A virus can spread person to person through
contaminated food, water or objects. The virus can also spread by having sexual contact or sharing drugs with someone who is infected. Those most at risk include: travelers to areas with high or intermediate rates of endemic hepatitis A, men who have sex with men, users of injection and non-injection illegal drugs, persons with clotting factor disorders, household members or caregivers of persons infected with hepatitis, and the homeless. To prevent the spread of hepatitis A infection, get the hepatitis A vaccine, wash your hands with soap and water frequently, especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers, and before handling food. Do not have sex with someone who is infected.

DO NOT GIVE THE WATER TO INFANTS. Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the MCL may quickly become seriously ill and, if untreated, may die because high nitrate levels can interfere with the capacity of the infant’s blood to carry oxygen. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blueness of the skin. Symptoms in infants can develop rapidly, with health deteriorating over a period of days. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD NOT CONSUME THE WATER. High nitrate levels may also affect the oxygen-carrying ability of the blood of pregnant women. Water, juice, and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water. Bottled water or other water low in nitrates should be used for infants until further notice. Excessive boiling can make the nitrates more concentrated, because nitrates remain behind when the water evaporates. If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.

With the holiday season fast approaching, San Benito County Public Health reminds consumers about the importance of safe food handling to prevent foodborne illness. Bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli and others can be present in foods such as meat and poultry, and can cause illness due to insufficient cooking, inadequate cooling and improper food handling practices. Properly
prepared and handled foods can assure us all a safe meal every day of the year. Bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli are responsible for many foodborne illnesses, caused by eating contaminated foods. Contamination usually occurs as a result of poor food handling practices at the farms, factories, restaurants or homes. Symptoms of foodborne disease may include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea which may be bloody. Most infected people recover from foodborne illnesses within a week. Some, however, may develop complications
that require hospitalization. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and persons with a weakened immune system are at highest risk for potentially lifethreatening complications. Foodborne diseases can be prevented by simple safety steps in the kitchen: • Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before and after food preparation, especially after handling raw foods. • Clean all work surfaces, utensils and dishes with hot, soapy water and rinse with hot water after each use.

• Don’t wash the turkey. Washing raw meat and poultry can cause bacteria to spread up to three feet away. Cooking (baking, broiling, boiling, frying or grilling) meat and poultry to the right temperature kills any bacteria that may be present, so washing meat and poultry is not necessary. • Refrigerate leftovers quickly (within two hours) at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Proponents of the proposed breakaway state of Jefferson, in Northeastern California, had a booth at the gun show and said gun laws are already too strict. They said they felt unrepresented and resented being governed by urban centers like Los Angeles and San Francisco. They want out and have resurrected a 70-year plan to separate the mostly rural region north of Sacramento and south of Portland creating Jefferson, the 51st state. “Why should someone in LA tell us what to do with our water?” said Don Ferreira who was selling State of Jefferson t-shirts at the Saturday show. While gun sales have slackened, a love for guns is growing in San Benito County, which is buoyed by the opening of the Locked and Loaded Gun Shop in Tres Pinos. Janson Neal, who massacred five people in Rancho Tehama on November 14, used two homebuilt semiautomatic rifles built from 80 percent kits, also known as “ghost guns” because they have no serial numbers. Despite the Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989 and a reputation for having restrictive gun control laws by gun control proponents, gun control advocates say 80 percent kits have exploited a loophole in the law. It is legal to build and own a homemade gun and there are no background checks required to purchase an 80 percent kit. Today homemade guns are not required to have serial numbers, but that will change on July 1, 2018, when a new law, AB-857, takes effect. While mass shootings in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas have renewed cries for stricter gun control, gun sales have slowed since the election of Donald Trump. In September MSNBC reported that American Outdoor Brands, formerly Smith and Wesson Holding, have experienced a 48.5 percent decrease in sales, or $100 million. Despite recurring mass shootings, which included the November 14 massacre of five in Rancho Tehama, the United States Congress is debating a

For a good 10 minutes after the postgame huddle, the San Benito High coaches and players took turns hugging one another and expressing words of appreciation for all the hard work they put in this season. The Haybalers, who had just saw their season come to an end after a 37-21 loss to Menlo-Atherton in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Open Division I playoffs,
displayed a bond that will seemingly last well beyond Friday night’s game. “At the end of the year you’ve either won your last game or lost your last game, so it stings,” Balers coach Bryan Smith said. “But these players are a tight brotherhood, and they’ll be able to bounce back from this. We demand a lot out of our kids, so you try to reward them with a lot of things at the end of the year. I’m proud of our guys for playing hard tonight.” The No. 4 seed Balers (6-5) were seemingly in control, taking a 21-14 lead into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, No. 5 seed Menlo-Atherton (7-4) outscored San Benito 23-0 in the fourth quarter to win going away. The Bears did it by
containing San Benito’s running game in the second half. The Balers rushed for 178 yards in the first half, but were held to 107 in the final two quarters. They also gave up 526 yards—370 through the air—to Menlo-Atherton. Bears quarterback Miles Conrad shredded the San Benito defense for touchdown passes of 70, 32, 62 and 35 yards. “Did we give up some big shots? Yeah, but we also had opportunities to score more points on offense and just didn’t get it done,” Smith said. Pass defense has been the Achilles heel for the Balers all season, as they’ve given up big plays time and again. Conrad completed 14-of-21 passes, averaging a whopping 26.4 yards per
completion. In the end, MenloAtherton proved to be the superior team. However, Smith expressed pride in the team’s season, especially in the final three games. In particular, Smith said the team fought hard in a win over North Salinas and a close loss to Palma. “These guys improved over the last three games of the season, so that tells me they never quit,” Smith said. “They have a lot of heart and wanted to play together as a whole team.” Against Menlo-Atherton, the Balers received a sterling performance from Stevan Navarro, who in addition to rushing for 62 yards on nine carries made two spectacular plays on special teams. SEASON WRAP-UP Emerging star Balers junior running back Stevan Navarro came on strong late in the season, accouting for seven touchdowns in the final four games. Navarro proved to be a big-time playmaker, and should only be better next season with varsity experience under his belt. Tough ending San Benito finished 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division (fourth place). The Balers have a slew of impact players returning in 2018.

Last season, the San Benito High boys soccer team won a Central Coast Section playoff game for the first time in school history. For the 2017-2018 season, the Haybalers are expecting to produce an encore performance. “To be honest, I think the team is looking better now than it did at this point last year,” secondyear Balers coach Marco Orozco said. “We have a lot of senior returners and a group of young, talented kids from the JV who will make an impact. Overall, I think we have more talent this year, and I really mean it. I see it on the field, in practice, in scrimmages.” The Balers, who open
the season Nov. 30 at home against Greenfield, have a nice combination of returning senior starters along with an influx of talented newcomers from last year’s junior varsity team. Some of the top returners include midfielder Abraham Arevalo, striker Manuel Ceja, defender Gerardo Ramirez, goalkeeper Efrain Barron and forward Erik Servan, a sophomore who spent the majority of his time last year on the junior varsity team but earned match time at the varsity level as well. Some of the key newcomers include junior midfielder Jose Agredano, junior forward Edgar Barbosa, junior goalkeeper Manuel Luna, and sophomore forward Jacob
Hernandez. The blend of senior experience with the up-and-coming newcomers has given Orozco added confidence that the Balers can build off their success from last season. Arevalo is a pure playmaker, possessing agility, vision and the ability to change pace on a moment’s notice. “Abraham is great at sending through balls and distributing,” Orozco said. Ceja led the team in goals last year, and Orozco is expecting more of the same from the athletic striker. Ceja possesses tremendous speed and knows how to position himself to make runs to put himself in the best position to score. Servan also is armed with speed and has the ability to
send nice crossing passes. Among the newcomers, Orozco is particularly high on Agredano, a junior attacking midfielder who makes good passes, distribute the ball well and supports the defense. “Jose looks stronger than ever,” Orozco said. Hernandez, a sophomore wing player, will be depended upon to go up and down the field and be in superior shape to wear down opponents. “We really need our wingers to not get tired and support the attack,” Orozco said. “I felt like that was something we were missing last year—that we didn’t have enough support up top, but this year it’s looking much better.” ➝ Soccer, page 20

After finishing in fourth place in the ultra competitive Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division—the best wrestling league in the Central Coast Section—last year, San Benito High expects a rise up the standings this season. It won’t be easy, of course, but Haybalers coach Steven Salcedo feels the program is ready to once again finish as one of the top two teams in the league. “Our whole lineup should be really good,” Salcedo said. “We have quite a bit of depth, and I thought we had a great off-season. If we have anywhere below a top three finish (in league), it would be a disappointment.” San Benito has plenty of standout returners along with an infusion of talented newcomers. The top returners include Bryce Mattson, Michael Guzman, Matt Ramon, Vincent Jacinto and Noah Zaragoza. Mattson is coming off a terrific 2016-2017 season, finishing as the runner-up in the 160 pound finals of the Central Coast Section Championships. Guzman took fifth in the 138 pound division, Ramon finished sixth in
Joe Delgado, San Benito has someone who is no stranger to the state stage. Delgado is a two-time state qualifier, and brings tremendous mat savvy and skills to the team. “Joe is very quick and has a lot of experience,” Salcedo said. “He’s best on his feet and is really good with takedowns.” Zaragoza is coming off a strong freshman year in which he finished third in the league championships. San Benito will receive an influx of talent now that football season is over, as Miguel Sanchez, Eric Fernandez, Ricardo Gallardo and Albert Rodriguez should all make an impact in the heavier weight classes (170 to 195 pound divisions). Salcedo said he’ll look to continue to grow the girls team, which is scheduled to compete in four tournaments this season—up one from a year ago. The top returners include Maribel Saucedo and Jenna Hartman. Saucedo finished fifth in the CCS Championships last season, while Hartman—a sophomore—has made an impression with her skill development and commitment. “Our girls program is growing,” Salcedo said. “We have about 12 girls on the team so far, and all 12 seem to be very committed and looking forward to building something great.”
Balers ready to have yet another historic season Page 19 Ramirez has grown into a leadership role since earning a spot on the varsity team as a sophomore. As one of the senior starters, Ramirez knows his fellow seniors must set a good example for the newcomers on how to carry themselves in practice and the matches. In particular, Ramirez acknowledges that the players can’t afford to commit silly fouls or mouth off to opponents or the refs. “I think it’s something we talked about recently, is keeping our cool,” Ramirez said. “We have to decide to keep our cool and let the refs do their job. We have to play our game and not get into what the other team is doing.” Orozco said the Balers aren’t the tallest team around, so they’ll have to
control play by keeping the ball on the ground and maintain the majority of the possession. Players like Ramirez will be key in helping San Benito to control the tempo and play the match on its terms. Ramirez had a productive off-season, playing with the San Jose Earthquakes pre-academy team and the Hollister Tremors. “Playing on the preacademy team was a new experience,” Ramirez said. “It’s a lot of intensity and a lot of good coaching. With that and playing for the Tremors, I feel much stronger and faster. My mentality has grown a lot from last season.” Ramirez has been impressed with his teammates in practice, including Edgar Barbosa, who possesses speed, ball control and a lethal shot.

As is the case before the season starts, Salcedo said most of the wrestlers need to work on their conditioning. “If we can continue to get our guys stronger and work on their endurance, they’ll be that much harder to beat,” Salcedo said. “You look at a guy like Bryce, and he’s smart and really understands (the nuances) of the sport. Michael probably got the most mat time (in the off-season). He went to a lot of different freestyle tournaments, and we’re looking for a big year from him. “And if Vince plays his cards right, he could have a big season as well. He’s got the technical skills, and now we’re getting his body and mind ready to handle the grind of the season. And Matt is one of my favorite athletes to work with. When he’s not working out for football, he’s working on stuff for wrestling.” Salcedo said that if everyone grinds and stays injury-free, he’s hopeful the Balers could be sending a handful of wrestlers to the CIF State Championships in March. The highlight-reel play set up the Balers’ next score, a Slade Wilson to Gio Giannotta 3-yard TD pass that put San Benito up 21-14 at the half. Unfortunately for the Balers, they never found the end zone again. Navarro got dinged up early in the third quarter, and the Balers lost one of their premier playmakers in the process. Giannotta made the most of his opportunities,
running for a 63-yard TD for the team’s second score with 2:17 left in the second quarter. Tyler Ortiz and Elisha Reyes had interceptions for the Balers, who generated just 256 yards of total offense (212 rushing, 44 passing). Jonny Gonzalez led the way with 86 yards rushing on 17 carries, and also had two receptions for 43 yards. Giannotta had 68 yards on two carries. “It hurts,” Smith said. “Especially for the seniors since it’s their last game. They’ve been working hard for four years. But we’ll take some time off, reflect for a bit and realize the players have a lot to be proud of.”

I wanted to re-introduce myself a little to the community. Some of you may know me and some of you may not. I have run in the past for Mayor. I am a retired foreman engineer from Sacramento. My background is in construction engineering. Network marketing and business oriented. I had my own company in the past and run other companies. After being hurt on the job, it did leave me partially disabled. I use a wheelchair sometimes with some help. My disability does not and has not affected my ability to run. I am very motivated and determined. With my knowledge and experience in construction, when issues like the levee break come about, I am well aware and will get the job taken care of immediately. With the proper and effective tools and methods. I will give and have insight on all the situations. Strategic planning and being a self-sufficient county is one of my goals. I will prioritize ideas to the council with better concepts that work. Tourism in the county needs help, better management and long term planning.
