Also, San Benito voters will vote for the 20th District seat in the House of Representatives, currently held by Democrat Jimmy Panetta. Positions on the county and local school boards, as well as water districts also are up for grabs in this election year. Some contests are already emerging. Muenzer will compete for his county seat against current Hollister Councilman Jim Gillio and Keith Snow, a resident who has run for Hollister’s mayoral position several times. Both Cannella and Caballero are terming out, leaving their state representative seats open races. Numerous positions at the state level will be left in the voters’ hands, including governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, treasurer and attorney general. Expect infighting among Democrats as they spar over what shade of blue California should be.

It feels like only yesterday that San Benito County voters filled out ballots on Election Day, but later this year residents will do it again as the 2018 political season kicks off with the June 2018 Gubernatorial Primary Election. The deadline to file for all primary candidates is March 9, 2018, but if an incumbent fails to file, the deadline has an extension that may apply to anyone except the incumbent. The top two candidates in each primary race will move on to final elections in November. Local contests up at the June 2018 Gubernatorial Primary Election include four-year terms for the following positions: • California State Senator District 12, currently held by Anthony Cannella

• County Supervisor District 4, currently held by Jerry Muenzer • County Assessor, currently held by Tom J. Slavich • County Clerk/Auditor/ Recorder, currently held by Joe Paul Gonzalez • District Attorney, currently held by Candice Hooper Mancino • Sheriff/Coroner, currently held by Darren Thompson • Treasurer/Tax Collector/Public Administrator, currently held by Mary Lou Andrade

As of Jan. 5, no ballot measures had been filed with the San Benito County Elections Office, according to Bilingual Elections Coordinator Sheyla Funes Gonzalez. While it’s possible that a transportation tax measure and school bond measure could be submitted by the Council of San Benito County Governments (COG) and Gavilan College, respectively, nothing had been sent as of yet. Races at the county level will take center stage during the June primary, but several cityrelated races are set to come to a head in November. Three San Juan Bautista City Council seats are expected to be open contests, as Mayor Jim West, Councilman Chris Martorana and Councilman Tony Boch have previously stated they don’t intend to run for reelection in 2018. Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez, District 2 Councilwoman Mickie Luna, District 3 Vice Mayor Karson Klauer, District 4 Councilman Gillio and

City Treasurer Geri Johnson will be up for reelection come November. Velazquez confirmed by phone Wednesday his intent to run for reelection. While it is currently unclear if Luna is planning another city council campaign, Klauer has stated he won’t be running for reelection. Gillio, who the council appointed to District 4 after Roy Sims abruptly stepped down in early 2017, will run a race at the county level and won’t be seeking the same city council seat. There are currently 32,718 registered voters in San Benito County, but that number could go up with future election office efforts to register residents to vote during the Hollister Farmers Market, student seminars, League of United Latin American Citizens events and National Registration Day. Supervisor Assembly District position represents all of San Benito County, as well as Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Watsonville, Greenfield, Gonzalez, King City, Salinas and Soledad. “County Supervisor Robert Rivas is a problem solver,” Gonzalez Mayor Maria Orozco said. “He knows our community. I trust him to fight for us in Sacramento and deliver results.” While the district’s representatives have flip-flopped from Democrat to Republican over the years, voter registration shows a Democratic majority at around 51 percent, Republicans with

around 22 percent and nearly 23 percent of district voters with no party preference. Demographics show the district at largely Latino with 66 percent, 25 percent white, 5 percent Asian and 1.8 percent African-American. Rivas isn’t the only one who’s got a higher office in mind. Former Watsonville City Councilman and Mayor Luis Alejo is considering a run for State Senator Anthony Cannella’s seat. Cannella is set to term out this year. Alejo, a fellow Democrat who sat in the 30th Assembly seat from 2012 to 2016, announced in September that he was opening an exploratory committee

to consider running for California’s 12th State Senate District in 2018. He started the exploratory committee with around $100,000. While Alejo previously stated he didn’t have plans to run for Senate, he said the threat posed to the community by President Donald Trump caused him to reconsider. He has yet to make an official announcement. The 12th District includes all of San Benito and Merced Counties, the Salinas Valley, and portions of Fresno, Madera, and Stanislaus Counties. The district represents approximately 1 million residents.

➝ FPPC, 1 himself from participating in the drafting of the City of Hollister Marijuana Ordinance and subsequent revisions to the ordinance while having a real or perceived personal conflict of interest.” The city council passed a medical cannabis ordinance back in December 2016 by a 3-2 vote, with Vice Mayor Klauer, Councilman Ray Friend and Councilwoman Mickie Luna in favor, and Mayor Ignacio Velazquez and then-Councilman Roy Sims against. After months of deliberations, council members capped the dispensary number to two facilities, dialed down the 600-foot setback from sensitive uses to 150 feet, removed mixed-use zoning and changed the working age in cannabis businesses from 21 to 18. State law still requires that all cannabis facilities have at least a 600-foot setback from schools. “When I got involved with writing the ordinace, from that point I haven’t done anything with anybody who was planning on selling to someone for a cannabis business,” Klauer said by phone Tuesday. “I haven’t represented anyone hoping to put a cannabis business on a property. I tried to avoid all that.” Klauer was notified by the Fair Political Practices Commission of the complaint in August and on Dec. 28 was asked to supply supplemental information to the existing case. “I can understand why some of the people have concern in that complaint, but in speaking with the city attorney before the meeting, as long as me or my immediate family members didn’t have a possible benefit from the sale or decision, I didn’t have a conflict of interest,” Klauer said. “I didn’t represent the buyer, seller or applicant in the past and I don’t see that happening in the future.” In the past, Klauer recused himself from several votes on cannabis businesses, including two properties on Industrial Drive. His recusal for 817 Industrial Drive last summer stemmed from the fact that a family member owned the building next door. The vice mayor also recused himself from a December vote on cannabis business Euphoric Life Inc. when they were approved to operate at 807 Industrial Drive, previously the home of Green Tripe owned by husband and wife Mary and Peter Voss. The

property sold for $1.24 million. “As far as 807 Industrial Drive, I had a conflict of interest with a family member who owned and sold the property,” Klauer said. “I recused myself with 817 Industrial Drive because my family member owned the building next door. That’s why I sat those out.” According to an FPPC spokesman, the complaint also alleges a conflict of interest with the fact that Klauer, a Realtor at Nino Real Estate, voted to approve cannabis business Traditional Roots to operate at 1091 San Felipe Road when Klauer’s coworker Jason Noble handled the listing and $2 million sale. Klauer started working part time at Nino Real Estate in 2011 and went full time in the summer of 2013. “I do mostly residential, probably 95 percent if not even higher,” Klauer said. “I only have a couple commercial sales. It’s all on the sales side, I don’t do any property management.” The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Fair Political Practices Commission Enforcement Division comprised of attorneys, investigators, auditors and other staff. There is no standard time frame for how long investigations of this nature take. “One can not put an ‘end date’ as to when an investigation should be finished,” said Jay Wierenga, communications director for the Fair Political Practices Commission. “Each depends on the specifics of the case, the facts, the cooperation of those involved, a variety of factors. I can say that, generally speaking, based on statistics from the past few years, about two-thirds of all cases are completed within 180 days and almost 90 percent are completed within a year.” Fair Political Practices Commission Regulation 18700 states: “A public official at any level of state or local government has a prohibited conflict of interest and may not make, participate in making, or in any way use or attempt to use his or her official position to influence a governmental decision when he or she knows or has reason to know he or she has a disqualifying financial interest. A public official has a disqualifying financial interest if the decision will have a reasonably foreseeable material financial effect, distinguishable from the

effect on the the public generally, directly on the official, or his or her immediate family, or on any financial interest.” According to the Fair Political Practices Commission website, all sworn complaints such as the one Cameron submitted are taken under official review to determine if the complaint has merit. This includes figuring out if the complaint contains enough evidence of a potential violation and whether the allegation is related to the Political Reform Act or covered under other laws. The initial review usually takes a few days or weeks, depending on the circumstances. If a complaint has merit and allegations fall under the Political Reform Act, the parties involved will be notified and an investigation will begin to determine if there is a violation.Each violation of the Political Reform Act is subject to an administrative fine of up to $5,000. Incidents that constitute a violation of the act include financial conflicts of interest, laundered campaign contributions, gift limit violations, campaign mass mailing at public expense, improper campaign reporting, improper receipt of campaign funds and more. Some incidents that don’t fall under Fair Political Practices Commission jurisdiction include false or misleading campaign materials, election fraud, open meeting law issues, local ordinances and residency requirements for running for or holding office. Klauer will not be seeking reelection this year. “I’m not running for reelection,” he said. “I put it on my Facebook page, it goes back to about a year and a half ago that I figured that out. I’m actually going to be moving across town. My wife and I sold our home last year and it closed in July. We’re renting for the time being so I can maintain my residence until my term is up.” While Klauer won’t be running in 2018, he was unsure if he would run for public office again at some point in the future. “I don’t know. I wouldn’t say never, it all depends,” he said. “It’s rewarding being able to get some things done, but there’s also a lot of public pressure. It’s not all positive all the time. It’s definitely not something I plan on running for this year or next year, but you never know.”

‌new year brings new goals, new challenges, and unfortunately for many of our older citizens, new opportunities to be taken advantage of, fleeced, scammed and robbed by gentle-voiced “financial counselors.” As the Baby Boomers enter retirement, a special category of predators sees a potential gold mine in taking hard-earned money from retirees. If you are in this age group, or know of someone in this age group, the American Association of Retired Persons encourages you to be on the alert for people who have no qualms about squandering or outright stealing lifetimes of savings. This elder financial abuse, the AARP warns, can take many forms. Sadly, the biggest threat may be from family and friends. The National Center on Elder Abuse reports that 90 percent of the perpetrators are family members or people the victims know well, such as neighbors, friends or caregivers. Scammers view the elderly as easy prey. To guard yourself or a loved one against financial exploitation, it’s important to know the warning signs—and what to do if you spot them. Financial abuse can take many forms, ranging from investment scams, bogus lottery schemes and stolen jewelry to identity theft, credit card misuse and forged checks. The five key markers that make many seniors prime targets are: 1) Lack of knowledge about major financial issues 2) Physical frailty 3) Isolation 4) Hesitancy to report Just one in 44 financial elder abuse cases is ever reported, according to the National Adult Protective Services Association. A majority of family and friends (72 percent) cites embarrassment as the main obstacle they believe keeps elders from reporting financial abuse.

To help you with these and other investment-related questions, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority provides a securities helpline for seniors. To help with investment issues, FINRA has a newly established toll-free help line (844.57.HELPS, or 844.574.3577) that older people can call if they have questions about their brokerage accounts, including statements and individual investments. The hotline is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. For assistance with checking the background of a broker or brokerage firm, or an investment adviser or investment representative, call the FINRA BrokerCheck Hotline at (800) 289-9999. You may also use the online version of FINRA BrokerCheck. The main FINRA phone number is 301.590.6500. Insurance agents also should have proper licenses. At finra.org, potential investors can check to see what credentials their broker or planner actually has, and check any history of enforcement actions. As for insurance and annuity products, insurance.ca.gov enables California consumers to get advice, check the license status of an insurance agent, or file a complaint against an agent. Any possible concern that some senior citizen has been victimized by an unscrupulous “friend” should be brought to the immediate attention of FINRA, the insurance department and/or local law enforcement agencies.

assed away peacefully after living a very long, happy fulfilling life. She married the love of her life, Joseph Pumphrey in 1943 whom she met in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. When he was stateside on leave during WWII, they met when he walked into the drug store and soda shop where she worked. They had been married for 54 years when he passed in 1998. Together they lived in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Morgan Hill, California from 1946 until present.

heila Ostrow Flodberg (nee Sheila Fern Ostrow) died peacefully January 1, 2018, in St. Augustine, FL. She was 81, and until May 2017, had been a long-time resident of San Martin, CA. With her at the time of her death were her daughters Fran Charlson and Diane McQueen of St. Augustine as well as her cats, Gilligan and Murphy.

Born to Cecelia and Alberto Aragon in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. More than anything else she loved and cherished her family. She enjoyed visiting her many friends. She is survived by her children, Diana Nunley, Gary (Natasha) Pumphrey, Debra (Gary) Trumpp and was preceded in death by daughter Charlotte (Don) Corbin. She had twelve grandchildren plus their spouses, Curtis, Kimberly, Duane, Michelle, Gary Jr., Raina, Garrett, Nicole, Bryan, Brendon, Bryce and Brianna and 23 greatgrandchildren and her cat, “Kitty” and many nieces and nephews. She was the eldest of nine children. Viewing and Mass Service will be Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10:30am, Saint Catherine’s Church, Morgan Hill. Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Morgan Hill immediately following the service.

She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh as a Registered Nurse, and earned her B.S.N. from Duquesne University. She later earned an M.S. in Counseling from Idaho State University and M.S. in Nursing from the University of Utah. She also became credentialed as a geriatric nurse practitioner and taught nursing at Boise State University for several years. Sheila was married August 25, 1957 to Ben Charlson with whom she had her three children. Sheila later married William Flodberg, of San Martin, CA. Sheila loved animals and volunteered for a variety of rescues and animal advocacy organizations. She was a member of Etz Chayim, Palo Alto, CA. She loved the outdoors—biking, swimming, hiking and was a member of the Sierra Club where she met her husband, Bill. A memorial graveside service is planned for January 14, 2018 at 11am, at the Hills of Eternity Cemetery in Colma, California. A Shivah Service will be held on January 14, 2018 at 7:30pm at Etz Chayim, 4161 Alma St, Palo Alto, CA. The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce is set to host its 97th annual Man and Woman of the Year award dinner and dance Saturday, Jan. 27 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister to honor locals Jim Hart and Frankie Gallagher. The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce will also present awards to Margot’s Ice Cream Parlor, Galaxy Self Storage, LLC and Intero Real Estate Services, Inc. for Businesses of the Year, with additional awards going to Pierce Real Estate as Chamber Champion, and Mike Fisher and Fisher’s Restaurant as Rising Star Entrepreneur. “We were totally surprised, honored and flattered,” said Margot Tankersley of Margot’s Ice Cream Parlor. The San Juan Bautista parlor has operated for over 21 years. “I enjoy volunteering,” said Gallagher, who’s been the marketing and public relations director at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital since 2002. “I enjoy meeting people in different activities I’m involved in. I think that’s what makes the community so great and gives it that small town spirit with the fairs, Veterans Day parade, rodeo parade and the different civic organizations.” The Woman of the Year has worked and volunteered with numerous local organizations, including the VFW Post 9242, Hollister Downtown Association

and San Benito County Saddle Horse Association. Man of the Year Jim Hart has also been involved with numerous regional groups like Hollister Relay for Life and the Hollister Kiwanis Club, where he has held positions including secretary, treasurer, and president. “I was surprised and quite humbled,” Hart said. “It’s not something that I ever expected. There’s so many deserving people in this community and it’s quite an honor.” “We have been hardworking and have maintained great market share,” said Renee Kunz, vice president and managing officer at Intero Real Estate. “I think this represents and acknowledges the hard work and determination, our passion we have for our community.” Galaxy Storage Owner Ken Balestrieri said he was excited to receive one of the Business of the Year awards. “We’ve been in the community for 20 years,” Balestrieri said. “It’s an opportunity for us to serve the community and now be recognized for how we serve the community. We’ve offered rent-free storage to many of the charitable entities in town and we offered free rent to storm victims last year. We support the community by keeping our rates in line with the market.” Facility Manager Socorro Barajas said she appreciated the community recognition. “We appreciate the business and support from everyone who’s been a tenant,” Barajas said. “It’s great to receive this award, it

After several meetings and public outcry from Lovers Lane residents and others affected by the storms and flooding, county supervisors finally allocated a total of $625,000 to fix the levee at the end of the year. Seven confirmed cases of valley fever have been recently reported in employees working at the Panoche Valley Solar Project, but only one of those is a resident of San Benito County. “In San Benito County, anyone who develops flu-like symptoms, such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing lasting two weeks or more, should ask their health care provider about valley fever,” said San Benito County Health Officer Dr. Gail Newel. “This is especially true for those working in occupations involving disruption of soil, such as farming and construction work.” The California Department of Public Health recently announced an increase in the number of new valley fever cases reported from local California health departments in 2017, compared with the number of cases reported for the same period in 2016. “With an increase in reported valley fever cases, it is important that people living, working and travelling in California are aware of its symptoms, especially in the southern San Joaquin Valley and the Central Coast, where it is most common,” said State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis or cocci, is caused by the spore of a soil fungus that grows in parts of California, Arizona and other parts of the southwestern United States. People get infected by breathing in spores present in

dust that gets into the air when it is windy or when soil is disturbed, such as through digging during construction. Solar project construction sites in San Luis Obispo County and Monterey County had valley fever outbreaks among their employees in recent years. Most infected people will not show signs of illness. Those who do become ill with valley fever may have symptoms similar to other illnesses, including influenza or bacterial or viral pneumonia, so valley fever is not always recognized. The flu-like symptoms can last for two weeks or more. While most people recover fully, some people are at risk for more severe disease or complications of valley fever such as pneumonia, infection of the brain, joints, bone, skin or other organs. People with an increased risk for severe disease include those 60 years or older, pregnant women, and people with diabetes or conditions that weaken their immune system. Additionally, African-Americans and Filipinos are at increased risk for severe disease, but the reason is unknown. A person can reduce the risk of infection by avoiding breathing in dirt or dust in areas where valley fever is common. In these areas, when it is windy outside and the air is dusty, stay inside and keep doors and windows closed. While driving, keep car windows closed and use recirculating air conditioning if available. If you must be outdoors when it is windy and dusty, consider wearing a properly fitted mask (such as an N95 respirator mask, which is widely available in retail stores), and refrain from disturbing the soil whenever possible. Employers should train their workers about valley fever symptoms and take steps to

County offers safety tips for cell phones SOURCES INCLUDE MOBILE DEVICES, MICROWAVES Staff Report

The use of cell phones has increased dramatically in recent years, including among children and young adults. These phones put out radio frequency (RF) energy. Because some scientists and public health officials believe RF energy may affect human health, the San Benito County Department of Health has listed some of the potential health concerns that provides guidance on how people can reduce their exposure.

What is RF energy?

Cell phones work by sending and receiving signals to and from cell phone towers. These signals are a form of electromagnetic radiation called radio frequency energy. Other sources of RF energy include cell phone towers, television and radio transmitters, smart meters, and microwave ovens. When a phone sends signals to a tower, the RF energy goes from the phone’s antenna out in all directions, including into the head and body of the person using the phone. Cell phones also emit RF energy when using WiFi and/or Bluetooth, but at lower levels. RF energy is not as powerful or as damaging to cells or DNA

as some other kinds of electromagnetic radiation, such as x-rays or UV rays from the sun. Some scientific studies, however, suggested that there may be increased health risks from exposure to RF energy.

Why are people concerned about exposure to RF energy from cell phones?

Although the science is still evolving, some laboratory experiments and human health studies have suggested the possibility that long-term, high use of cell phones may be linked to certain types of cancer and other health effects, including: • Brain cancer and tumors of the acoustic nerve (needed for hearing and maintaining balance), and salivary glands • Lower sperm counts and inactive or less mobile sperm • Headaches and effects on learning, memory, hearing, behavior, and sleep However, these studies do not establish the link definitely and scientists disagree about whether cell phones cause these health problems and how great the risks might be. This document is intended to provide guidance for those people who want to reduce their own and their families’ exposures to RF

energy from cell phones, despite this uncertainty.

This happens mainly when: • You see only one or two bars displayed. Cell phones put out more RF energy to connect with cell towers when the signal is weak. If you must use your phone when the signal is weak, try to follow the other guidance on this page.

How can you reduce your exposure?

Keep your phone away from your body. Keeping your phone just a few feet away from you can make a big difference. • When you talk on your cell phone, avoid holding it to your head - use the speakerphone or a headset instead. Wireless (Bluetooth) and wired headsets emit much less RF energy than cell phones.

• You are in a fast-moving car, train or bus. Your phone puts out more RF energy to maintain connections to avoid dropping calls as it switches connections from one cell tower to the next unless it is in airplane mode.

• Send text messages instead of talking on the phone.

• You are streaming audio or video, or downloading or sending large files. To watch movies or listen to playlists on your phone, download them first, then switch to airplane mode while you watch or listen.

• If you are streaming media, downloading or sending large files, try to keep the phone away from your head and body. • Carry your cell phone in a backpack, briefcase or purse, not a pocket, bra or belt holster. Because your phone’s antenna tries to stay connected with a cell tower whenever it’s on, it emits some RF energy even when you are not using it. It does not emit RF energy when in airplane mode, which turns off cellular, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Reduce or avoid using your cell phone when it is sending out high levels of RF energy.

Don’t sleep with your phone in your bed or near your head. Unless the phone is off or in airplane mode. Take off the headset when you’re not on a call. Headsets release small amounts of RF energy even when you are not using your phone. Don’t rely on a “radiation shield” or other products claiming to block RF energy, electromagnetic fields or radiation from cell phones. According to the

U.S. Federal Trade Commission, products that interfere with the phone’s signal may force it to work harder and emit more RF energy in order to stay connected, possibly increasing your exposure.

What about children?

Children may be more at risk for harm from exposure to RF energy because: • RF energy can reach a larger area of a child’s brain than an adult’s brain. • A child’s brain and body grow and develop through the teen years. During this time, the body may be more easily affected by RF energy and the effect may be more harmful and longer lasting. • A child who uses a cell phone will have many more years of exposure to RF energy in his or her lifetime than someone who started using a cell phone as an adult. There is not a lot of research about the effects of cell phone RF energy on children or teenagers, but a few studies have shown that there may be hearing loss or ringing in the ears, headaches, and decreased general well-being. Girls wrestling is one of the fastest rising sports in the country, and no where is that more apparent than in Hollister. San Benito High has 10 girls on its roster, a healthy number that Haybalers coach Steven Salcedo expects to grow in the coming years. The number of girls tournaments are growing in popularity, and athletes are starting at a young age, just like the boys. “Even in our youth program (Razorbacks club team), we have girls wrestling,” Salcedo said. “My daughter Eliana is 6 (years old) and wrestling, and some of her friends are getting in the sport as well. With Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) getting more popular, more girls are starting to realize they can make a name for themselves.” Salcedo said he was eager to get Eliana into wrestling because of what the sport can teach her in terms of valuable traits that will help her in every facet of her life. “You learn life lessons through wrestling like character building, self defense, hard work, determination,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons why as a parent I wanted my daughter to compete in wrestling.”

Eliana, who is a first-grader at Ladd Lane, won her first match last Sunday in a tournament in Watsonville. She practices with the Razorbacks, which has 40 to 45 wrestlers in their program. “We’re trying to introduce kids to wrestling so by the time they get to middle school and high school, they’ll have a firm background,” Salcedo said. Entering the week, San Benito High had four girls in the top 10 of the Central Coast Section rankings: Jenna Hartman (No. 6 at 111 pounds), Nathalie Medina (No. 7 at 126), Maribel Saucedo (No. 2 at 160) and Savannah Sepulveda (No. 8 at 235). The rest of the girls team roster include Rayven Bedolla, Brooke Weitz, Arianna Leija, Madeline Pena, Nailea Betancourt and Alondra Gonzalez. San Benito High hosts the third largest girls-only tournament in the section at its annual Lady Baler Bash on Jan. 27. “Last year I believe we had 70 teams represented from all over the state,” said Salcedo, who envisions hiring a girls coach as the number of participants at the school keep rising. “I’m excited to have more girls join the team.” Especially ones in the mold of Hartman, whose dedication to the sport runs deep. Having done Hapkido—a Korean martial art involving joint locks, grappling and throwing—since age 8, Hartman had experience in MMA when she took up wrestling as a seventh grader at Rancho San Justo. Last season, Hartman took sixth in the 111-pound weight class of the CCS Championships.

She definitely put in the work over the off-season, often working out twice a day to gain any mental or physical edge possible.

“Jenna has been the most committed, going to summer practices and a wrestling camp over the summer,” Salcedo said. “It’s encouraging to see.” Each morning, Hartman went on a 2 to 3 mile run. In the afternoon or evening, she worked out in her garage doing box jumps or battle ropes. In the Balers’ summer conditioning sessions, Hartman practiced from 7 to 9 a.m. If Hartman ever got tired during a workout, she visualized herself on the

podium, receiving a medal. “I’d also be thinking about if other girls were working harder than me, and that is what pushed me through to work harder than them,” she said. Salcedo said it’s teenagers like Hartman who are the perfect role model for girl wrestlers growing up. In fact, Salcedo was ecstatic talking about this year’s girls team. “I’m very encouraged that girls are working hard,” he said. “They’re good role models for the younger gals like my daughter. I know we have some great female athletes in Hollister, and wrestling is a great outlet to go to college.” Hartman said she’s most proud of finishing her freshman season. “Last year I think we had

100 (boys and girls combined on the team) at the beginning of the season, and by the end there was 50 or so,” she said. “Just making it through is a real accomplishment.” Even though Hartman has improved her technical skills from a year ago—a result of wrestling against more boys this season—she points to her determination as her greatest attribute. “I refuse to give up,” she said. Hartman’s younger sister, Rachael, who is a fifth grader at Ladd Lane, does ballerina and acting. That is something Hartman admires about her sister. “I’m too scared to get on stage,” she said. Actually, Hartman is fearless on the stage—it just happens to be a mat.

Alvarez, Palma, Carmel, Gonzales, Marina, North Monterey County, North Salinas and Stevenson. Zenk’s team will play for a charity called Operation Giveback. Both teams will practice for three consecutive days leading up to Friday’s game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Gonzalez said it was great to see some of the players on the Salinas team that won a CCS Open Division I championship this past season. “It was good to see a team from the area win the title,” he said. “We’re rivals on the field, but once you get to meet and talk with them more, I like the guys from Salinas.” Even though it’s an exhibition game, the players are taking the contest seriously. There are 35 players on each team, meaning competition is stiff for the starting positions. “We’re about proving ourselves in practice,” Gonzalez said. “The coaches are going to play the best guys, and everyone is well trained and honed in. It should be a real great experience.” Rodriguez echoed Gonzalez’s comments, though he’s rather busy lately. The Gilroy coach is one of 32 coaches throughout the nation who are eligible to win the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award. Two finalists will each receive $15,000 from the NFL Foundation, $10,000 of which will go to their high school’s football program. The winner will be announced during the Pro Bowl, which airs Jan. 28 at noon local time on ESPN and simulcast on ABC.

When Jonny Gonzalez showed up for the first practice on Jan. 5 in preparation for the 33rd Annual Central Coast All-Star Football game, he thought it was going to be a walk-through. Of course, when you put a bunch of competitive high school football players on the same field, chances are things will get intense. And that’s exactly what happened. “It turned out to be a full-on scrimmage,” said Gonzalez, who was one of four San Benito High players—Gio Giannotta, Eugene McBride and Daniel Pasillas were the others—selected to play in the game on Friday at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas. “When you have the best players in the area, everyone is trying to make a name for themselves. We scrimmaged each other all day, and it was a full contact practice.” Gonzalez sounded plenty excited to play in Friday’s game, which features soonto-be graduating players from South Santa Clara, San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. For one last time in high school, Gonzalez and his teammates get to play in an organized game at a sparkling facility. “That practice was really fun and a great day,” he said. “I got to know a couple of other players, which made it more fun. Every practice is like a new game.”

Gonzalez played running back during his senior season, but he’ll be playing wide receiver for the All-Star Game. He’s had nothing but fun practicing as a receiver. “I met the Salinas QB and the Monte Vista (Christian) QB, and it’s whole different offense than what I was used to at Hollister,” Gonzalez said. “(For the All-Star team) we’re a spread team playing a zone concept (offense), so being 6-foot-2 in a zone concept is not really the best thing for me. At first I didn’t pick up routes right away, but the coaches helped me out and spent a lot of time helping me run them. It was really a lot of fun, and I wished Hollister passed the ball a little more.” Because Gonzalez hadn’t played in nearly two months, his body felt like it had been in a minor accident the day after. “My calves were really sore, I had a little bit of a headache and a neck strain,” he said. “After that first practice, we realized we were a bit out of shape because we hadn’t played in so long. But I feel good right now and getting back into it. It’s just really great playing with the guys again.” The Central Coast is one of the longest running high school football AllStar games in the Bay Area, and both teams are playing for charities.
