Two San Benito County residents have died due from an influenza virus, according to San Benito County Public Health Services. “We regretfully announce the deaths of two San Benito County residents associated with influenza virus infection,” Health Officer Dr. Gail Newel said this week. One individual was an adult under the age of 65 and the other individual was over 65. Both had other medical conditions, possibly increasing the risk of severe complications from the flu, Newell said. Although the vaccination status for these residents was not reported, California state health officials report that “of the

Cannabis business denied reconsideration TWO APPEAL HEARINGS PUSHED FOR CALIFORNIA FINEST AND LLXP CORP. Nicholas Preciado Reporter

The Hollister City Council chose Tuesday night not to revisit a former medical cannabis business applicant after the owner asked for another chance. Additionally, two appeal hearings for California Finest and LLXP Corporation were pushed to the next council meeting on February 5. Eric Hecht, current owner of 817 Industrial Drive, spoke Tuesday night during public comment. “I’m asking the council to bring back only my manufacturing permit onto the agenda for a vote from the council, which was submitted as the nonprofit entity name FBT Jordan Inc.,” Hecht said. Hecht was previously denied a permit to operate a medical cannabis dispensary, cultivation and manufacturing facility on Industrial Drive last summer despite being ranked one of the top original cannabis applicants recommended to the council by city staff. The 817 Industrial Drive address faced controversy after public outcry over it being near places where youth gather, such as Crossfit San Benito and Rovella’s Gym. The business owner explained his new endeavor would focus on manufacturing derivatives of cannabidiol, or CBD, a cannabis compound with health benefits that doesn’t
get the user high as is the case with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. “The extracts that our facility will produce are in fact the same derivatives that found promising results in preliminary tests with Cannakids,” Hecht said. He explained that he’d recently developed a relationship with Tracy Ryan, CEO of Cannakids, a California-based cooperative that works to advance the treatment of pediatric cancer with medical cannabis derivatives such as CBD. “I’d also like to let you know that I’ve been committing myself locally to the community,” Hecht told the council. “To advocate the participation of young adults, we’re exploring teaming up with Gavilan College to provide employment opportunities to local Gavilan students who are interested in becoming part of this new industry.” Despite his speech, Hecht failed to capture the attention of the council comprised of Mayor Ignacio Velazquez, Vice Mayor Mickie Luna, and Councilman Ray Friend. When it came time to decide whether or not to agendize the item for a February meeting, Councilman Karson Klauer recused himself because a family member owned nearby property. Councilman Jim Gillio recused himself as well because of Hecht’s part in the original batch of cannabis applicants, some of which had purchased equipment from Gillio’s shop Central Ag Supply. “I personally would not

City Manager Bill Avera informed the council that Hecht’s CBD-based business plan was different from his original application that included a
retail, cultivation, and manufacturing components. After some back and forth with the council, Avera said he needed consensus from all three members up on the dias to bring the item back for reconsideration.
Velazquez still wasn’t interested. “As I said, I can’t support bringing this back,” Velazquez said. “Doesn’t matter for the rest of us,” Friend replied.

People at highest risk from severe complications from influenza infection include adults 65 years of age and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women, and those with certain medical conditions like asthma, heart disease, and weakened immune systems. new market, it is more affordable by design, we can certainly make that adjustment to include as an exemption,” Planning Manager Abraham Prado said. “I personally would like to see that exempt because it adds more to the element of getting affordable housing,” Councilman Ray Friend said.
The growth management program is an effort to better regulate residential growth in the city. In the early 2000s, the Regional Water Resources Control Board enacted a building moratorium after a 15 million gallons of wastewater spilled into the San Benito River bed. The moratorium hurt the local economy and halted housing, commercial development
and job growth for over half a decade. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Great Recession hit in 2008 and prolonged the stunted local economy. Since the moratorium was lifted in 2008, 560 homes have been built. That includes 143 homes built in 2016. A second reading of the growth management plan is expected in March.
I think it’s a mistake to take it to a higher number and that’s why I’m going to be opposing this, unfortunately, tonight. —MAYOR IGNACIO VELAZQUEZ

OPINION
Take anti-flu precautions
T
he flu has turned deadly in San Benito County. Two San Benito County residents have died due from an influenza virus, health officials reported this week. Many are suffering flu symptoms, and some of these infections are one of the influenza viruses. Feel like you’ve been “hit by a truck?” Then health experts say it’s probably influenza. Flu activity reaches its highest levels between December and February, they say, and can continue through May. However, flu activity has not yet peaked in the United States. Public health officials in the southern hemisphere have warned that this year’s flu season could be particularly severe. Flu activity south of the equator offers a good indication of coming flu activity in the northern hemisphere. Getting the flu shot is still the best way to protect oneself against the different flu strains that circulate in the community. San Benito County Public Health Services provides free flu shots. You can get the vaccine locally at: • Your healthcare provider (covered by most insurance providers) • Any pharmacy (covered by insurance without deductible or copay) • Public Health Services office at 439 Fourth St. in Hollister on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am to 4pm. No appointments are necessary.

OBITUARIES COLLEEN MONTGOMERY
EDNAMAE MCSWEENEY LEWIS
January 8, 1920 - December 30, 2017
March 30, 1918 - January 1, 2018
C
laudia Colleen Montgomery passed away Saturday morning, December 30, 2017, at the age of 97 in Sun City West, Arizona. Born January 8, 1920, in Sanger, California, to Claude Houdashelt and Goldie Vivian Brandon Houdashelt, Colleen never thought of herself as one of the Greatest Generation. Yet, she saw a nation go from farming with horses, as her brothers Brandon, Gene, and Derrel did on the Prunedale family “ranch”, and from sisters LaVonne and Donna Lee cooking there on a wood stove, through a Depression which shaped her ongoing frugality, and across a World War that made her appreciate peace as well as honor “GIs”. Never shirking hard work or sacrifice, she gave up her art scholarship to wait tables in Salinas so that her youngest brother could attend college. At the restaurant, she met Earl “Bud” Montgomery, whom she loved dearly and married in 1950. With him, she travelled throughout California’s Central and Imperial Valleys doing fruit and vegetable packing until their son John was born in 1953. Losing Bud to a heart attack in 1956, Colleen then clerked for Pacific Bell Telephone in Salinas and Hollister, to which she moved to raise John in a small town with friendly people and good schools. Never remarrying, but looking for more structure for her son, she left Hollister in 1967, finally settling in Reno with her youngest brother’s family. Retiring from Nevada Bell in 1983, she moved to Fresno to be near her youngest sister, coming ultimately to Sun City West when John settled in Phoenix. Remembered for her incredible green thumb, for her ability to make any item of clothing out of whole cloth or yarn, for (never afraid of sugar and butter) the most tasty homemade cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies, and taffy, along with her patience in teaching daughter-in-law, granddaughter, nieces, and grandnieces cooking and sewing skills, for her senses of humor, inquisitiveness, and imagination, and for her universal caring, she is missed so much. Colleen is survived by her sister LaVonne Dark of Surprise, Arizona, her son John and daughter-in-law Vanessa of Phoenix, granddaughter Katherine (ASU Law), and grandson David (UofA Engineering).
R
esident of Fremont Ednamae Lewis passed away at the age of 99. A proud native of San Francisco, Ednamae was the eldest of three children born to Aemon and Edna McSweeney. The family moved to Redwood City, CA, where Ednamae graduated from Sequoia High School. In Redwood City, Ednamae met, and married, Gaylord Lewis, and it is where their daughter, Gayle, was born. In 1947, the family moved to Hollister, CA, where Ednamae would reside until Gaylord’s passing in 1997. She then moved to Fremont, CA, to be closer to family. Ednamae cared for her husband and daughter and always saw the best in everyone. She took great pride in her family, loved to read, and was a beacon of happiness to everyone she met. Ednamae’s love for life, and her faith, made her a joy to be around. Our “Little Grandma” will be sorely missed. Ednamae is survived by her daughter Gayle and son-in-law, Robert G. Mallon; Grandchildren Anne Mallon Holmdahl (Todd) and Robert L. Mallon; Great-Grandson Eric and Ryan Holmdahl; and her brother, William McSweeney. A Funeral Mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date.

DA assigns special accountant to look at evidence ➝ Dabo, 1
declined to pursue any investigation of Dabo’s handling of the charitable trust, despite pleas from the Community Foundation, which had been designated to receive funds in the trust. The trust was established in 2001 by Barbara and Tony Matulich. Tony Matulich died in 2003 and Barbara Matulich died in 2012, when the balance was to go to the community foundation. Instead, according to the court documents, it was transferred into Dabo’s personal accounts. “We have always indicated that a forensic accounting analyst is needed to properly bring an investigation to a point where we could develop probable cause and for the DA to be able to prosecute the case,” Reynoso said in December. “We also believe that although the requirements are different, handing over the evidence from the civil case investigation to the DA could quite possibly have enough probable cause for criminal charges. presented in the Dabo case.” “Furthermore, the DA now has at her disposal a forensic accounting analyst that can help her office,” he said. “At this point, what we should all do is to concentrate on pushing forward
what evidence exists toward prosecution.” Meanwhile, Dabo as of midweek still had not resigned from the San Benito County School District Board of Trustee. He told schools Supt. Krystal Lomanto on Dec. 1 that he would be resigning his school board seat, citing fallout from a civil court ruling in November that he illegally took money from the charitable trust. Dabo sent an email to Lomanto the same day that the Free Lance reported that Hooper would investigate possible criminal fraud or theft charges against him, once she obtained evidence from a Nov. 13 civil trial. “I know this has been hard on everyone, the articles, the accusations, the office under attack, etc.,” Dabo wrote county school Supt. Krystal Lomanto on Dec. 1 in an email obtained by the Free Lance in a public record request. “I will resign my position. I just don’t know when I’ll do it.” If he does not resign before the March filing deadline for candidates in the 2018 election, a board appointee could fill the complete new four-year term. assembled by John Clark, a Morgan Hill lawyer for the Charitable Foundation for San Benito County. Hooper had told the Free Lance on Nov. 22 that she would assign a forensic accountant to look at Dabo’s handling of finances for the Matulich Trust if she received evidence from the police. The documents were presented at the Nov. 13 civil trial in San Benito Superior Court in which the judge ruled that Dabo had violated state probate laws when he drained more than $640,000 from the Matulich Charitable Trust for his own purposes, and ordered him to pay a $1.74 million judgment, plus more than $80,000 in legal bills. Dabo told the Free Lance in December he could not comment about his role as trustee of the Matulich Trust, fearing that anything he might say could impact the criminal investigation. But he declined an offer to present his side, except to say he was hopeful the district attorney would eventually decide not to prosecute. More than a year ago, both Hooper and the police had

In December, Dabo did not seek reelection by his fellow
trustees to a third consecutive year as president of the school board, where he has served for 34 years. Dabo did not attend board meetings on Nov. 30 or Dec. 14, when Joan Campbell-Garcia was elected the new president. He also did not attend the Nov. 13 civil court trial, saying he could not afford an attorney.
Christmas Eve armed robber arrested in Hollister SUSPECT ACCUSED OF CRIMES IN SIX CITIES IN THREE COUNTIES Staff report
Police arrested a Hollister man Jan. 12 on charges he robbed a Morgan Hill eyeglasses store and lounge at gunpoint on Christmas Eve, according to a press release. The same suspect is allegedly responsible for similar crimes in neighboring communities.
Morgan Hill Police, assisted by agents from the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, conducted surveillance and follow-up investigation on the suspect, Matthew Aaron De La Rosa, in Hollister. De La Rosa was located with his girlfriend, Christy Aguirre, 44 of Hollister, on Jan. 12. Aguirre was arrested by the San Benito County Sheriff ’s Office on suspicion of multiple unrelated offenses. Detectives executed a search warrant at De La Rosa’s home,
which he shared with Aguirre, police said. During the search, police found evidence that tied him to the Christmas Eve robbery in Morgan Hill, as well as another robbery in Monterey. Police questioned De La Rosa after his arrest, and he confessed to a total of six armed robberies—in Morgan Hill, Sunnyvale, Monterey, Seaside, San Jose and Capitola, according to Morgan Hill Police. He was booked at Santa Clara County jail on suspicion

of multiple armed robbery charges. On Dec. 24, 2017, De La Rosa entered EYEfiniTEA Optique & Lounge, 15700 Monterey Road. Wearing a surgical mask, the suspect looked around for a few minutes, selected two sets of eyewear and approached the counter as if he was going to pay for the merchandise, police said. Once the clerk appeared behind the counter, De La Rosa lifted his shirt to display a handgun in his waistband,
according to authorities. He then demanded money from the cash register and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and the eyewear. The Morgan Hill Police investigation led officers to identify the suspect. MHPD released photos of De La Rosa to other nearby law enforcement agencies, some of which determined the same suspect had committed similar crimes in their jurisdictions, according to Morgan Hill police.

Christopher Ranch disputes claims in Netflix doc COMPANY DENIES ALLEGATIONS OF FIXED PRICES, PRISON LABOR Brad Kava Editor
Gilroy’s Christopher Ranch, America’s biggest garlic producer, disputed accusations last week that it conspired to fix garlic prices and sells garlic peeled by Chinese prisoners, allegations raised by competitors in a new Netflix documentary series investigating food scandals called “Rotten.” The episode, called “Garlic Breath,” shows what it alleges is undercover video taken in Chinese prisons of workers peeling garlic – using their teeth in some cases, according to an undercover witness, to remove roots because the peeling had ruined the prisoners’ fingernails. The hidden camera video shows boxes marked with the Golden Lion brand, sold by Christopher Ranch. Ken Christopher, the thirdgeneration manager of the family-owned private company, is denying the documentary’s allegations. He said that Christopher Ranch, a major regional employer, is planning to file suit against Netflix asking it to stop showing the documentary and to issue a correction. He said the company is overwhelmed by negative comments on social media as a result of
the show. Christopher said his company has never sold garlic peeled by prisoners and 90 percent of the garlic it sells is from California. He said the company has no connection to the Golden Lion brand and that the video claiming to be filmed in prisons is a fake. “The documentary is a hit piece on us,” said Christopher, whose family has grown, packed and marketed garlic in Gilroy since 1953. “We’re being dragged through the mud. I want to keep emphasizing, who we are is about California garlic. No Christopher Ranch product uses Chinese garlic. Having our integrity means so much to us.” In the documentary, a U.S.based garlic importer tells the filmmakers he sneaked a camera into a Chinese prison and observed prisoners peeling garlic, allowing companies to sell it at much lower prices than cloves peeled in the U.S. The documentary alleges that Christopher Ranch sells that garlic. It also claims that Christopher Ranch has been working with Harmoni Group Inc., which is the only importer of overseas garlic that doesn’t have to pay tariffs on imported cloves. Christopher said the company works with Harmoni because it doesn’t dump garlic in the U.S. market, meaning it doesn’t sell garlic for less than it costs to produce it, undercutting U.S. growers. “Christopher Ranch, the
nation’s largest family-owned garlic company, is proud of our commitment to our customers and community to be both ethical and transparent regarding our business operations,” Christopher wrote in a Jan. 8 Facebook post. “We find it unfortunate that the new Netflix docuseries ‘Rotten’ has chosen to produce a show that highlights our brand in such a negative light.” “The company grows 90 percent of the 90 million pounds of garlic that it sells annually in the U.S. in California, sourcing the rest from Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and China,” he wrote. “We source a limited amount of Chinese garlic from a USbased firm, Harmoni, and have found them to be a dependable supplier. We were aware of some allegations surrounding their labor practices last year, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection investigated and cleared them of any wrongdoing.” According to the documentary, small garlic producers can’t survive if this large Chinese importer, Harmoni, is allowed to undercut prices. “Currently, the wholesale price of garlic in China is $1 a kilo, and this has enabled Harmoni Spice, the only garlic importer that pays no duty, to undercut U.S. producers for the past 10 years,” said Stanley Crawford, a New Mexico farmer who asked the Department of Commerce to review Harmoni’s
exemption from tariffs, in an article published by the Albuquerque Journal. “Anti-dumping duties, which can run as high as $4.71 a kilo, would serve to level the playing field for U.S. producers, bringing the price of imported garlic in line with U.S. wholesale prices.” The commerce department reviews companies suggested by an organization called the Fresh Garlic Producers Association, of which Christopher Ranch is one of four members. That organization annually withdraws its request for the regulatory agency to review Harmoni, according to the film, allowing Harmoni to exploit a loophole and avoid tariffs. In June, the U.S. Department of Commerce threw out Crawford’s request to investigate Harmoni, saying that Crawford had taken money from a competing Chinese garlic company and destroyed his credibility as a source. The film documents a battle between Crawford and his attorney and another boutique New Mexico garlic producer who first signed on with Crawford and then took money from Harmoni. Those battles prevented the commerce department from taking action. U.S. Customs investigated the allegations of prisoners being used for the imported Harmoni garlic and found it to be untrue, Christopher said. The “Rotten” series is produced by Zero Point Zero, the
company behind Anthony Bourdain’s television shows. “Our food supply system is broken, corrupt, dirty, inhumane, and riddled with fraud. If you are not aware of this, you need to be,” wrote Paste Magazine in a review of the series, calling it “mandatory” viewing for people who buy food. Christopher said the company is considering a lawsuit and is also thinking about no longer importing any garlic from China. The reason it does so now, he said, is because some customers who can’t afford California garlic prefer the cheaper Chinese product. Those imports are never sold under the Christopher name, he said, and when the company does use garlic from other countries to bridge the gap between harvests, it clearly labels its origin. Christopher Ranch, with more than 600 full time workers and another 400 seasonal ones, is Gilroy’s biggest employer. The company pays its agricultural workers above minimum wage, and company patriarch Don Christopher is noted for his philanthropy, which includes donating land and an endowment to fund the establishment of Christopher High School. Ken Christopher said the company would never knowingly use prison labor for its products. “Absolutely not,” he said. “Not in a million years.”
The documentary is a hit piece on us. We’re being dragged through the mud. I want to keep emphasizing, who we are is about California Garlic. No Christopher Ranch product uses Chinese garlic. Having our integrity means so much to us. —KEN CHRISTOPHER, THIRD-GENERATION MANAGER

Rivas officially announces run for state Assembly EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT, ROADS, AND HOUSING Staff Report
Submitted
San Benito County Supervisor Robert Rivas has officially announced that he is entering the contest for the 30th District seat in the California Assembly, which includes the Salinas Valley and Big Sur, San Benito County, Watsonville, Gilroy and Morgan Hill. His campaign will focus on education, roads and protecting the environment, and he will continue his work to bring affordable housing and goodpaying jobs to the district. He also pledged to be a strong advocate for local farmers. “I am a lifelong resident of this region, and I will work tirelessly to make sure the 30th Assembly District has a strong advocate in Sacramento,” said Rivas, who pledged to be a strong advocate for every district resident. “We have been fortunate to have a strong leader in Anna Caballero fighting for us. I will continue to work on the issues Anna has championed to improve the quality of life of everyone in our region.” Rivas is a native of San Benito County. His grandfather was a migrant farmworker, and Rivas was raised in farmworker housing near Hollister. He graduated from San Benito High School, and returned to the area after college to serve his community. Rivas has worked as a lecturer at Gavilan
College, a paid call firefighter in Hollister, and in staff positions for Assemblymembers Simon Salinas and Anna Caballero. Since 2010, Rivas has served on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. The current county supervisor will make improving roads and the regional transportation system a priority. “Traffic congestion diminishes our quality of life and pollutes our environment,” Rivas said. “We need urgent fixes for this issue.” Rivas will also focus on education. “As an educator at Gavilan College, I see firsthand the challenges our students face,” he said. “We must make sure that every student has the skills to succeed in a changing economy.” Protecting the environment will be another key focus of Rivas’ campaign. He led the successful effort to ban fracking in San Benito County. “Robert Rivas served as a paid-call firefighter for over six years in San Benito County,” said Vince Grewohl, president of the Hollister Firefighters Association. “He was on the front lines, keeping our community safe. We trust him to be a strong advocate for public safety. He is the best candidate for the job.” Rivas has won support from various leaders across the district, including former Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado. “I strongly urge all Santa Clara County residents to

Mission 10 Race celebrates 35 years SAN JUAN BAUTISTA EVENT WILL FEATURE A HALF-MARATHON Nicholas Preciado Reporter
Nick Lovejoy
Get ready to lace up those running shoes for the 35th annual Mission 10 Race in San Juan Bautista right around the corner. The event takes place January 27 and will feature vendors like Ohana Shave Ice, a pre-run yoga warm-up, themed teams eligible for trophies, and live music by local high school rock band Racing Time. The Rotary Club of Hollister has sponsored the race since its start back in 1982, despite the race being located in San Juan Bautista. “People ask why the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista doesn’t put on the race, it’s because we founded the race,” Hollister Rotary President Amalia Ellis said. “The Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista was chartered after we started the race. They send volunteers to help out at the event and some members participate as well.” The Mission 10 Race serves up a USA Track and Field distance-certified half marathon through the Anzar Hills and by Anzar Lake, as well as a 10k (also certified), 5k and 1-mile fun run for kids. All races kick off in front of the Mission San Juan Bautista. “If somebody in the 10-mile or half marathon does well and they’re looking to be a ranked runner on the national level, they’re able to report this race and their time,” said Race Director Bill Tiffany, who’s directed the event for over 20 years. “For the first number of years, it was strictly a 10-mile race. I would say the participants during those earlier years were pretty serious runners.” All proceeds from the event
benefit local scholarships for high school students, as well as charities. Ellis said the rotary club donates to 12 Days of Giving, Girls Inc., Small Steps, the Lights On Celebration, Footsteps 2 Brilliance, and the United Way Stuff the Bus program. Ellis said $21,000 in college scholarships went to local high school students last year. The club also participates in international endeavors like the Ilorin Club of Ilorin, Nigeria. The club is building eight water wells in eight different villages, which will save thousands of lives. “As you know, clean water and sanitation are important,” Ellis said. “Some of these villages don’t have access to clean water at the moment.” Ellis said the Hollister chapter collaborates with other chapters to fund international service projects like the one in Nigeria, including the chapters in San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Morgan Hill, and Almaden Valley. Seven-hundred runners participated in last year’s Mission 10 Race and Tiffany said he looked forward to seeing some familiar faces. “It’s one of those types of events that brings people to the local community and lets them hang out in San Juan, appreciate the area,” Tiffany said. “We’ve had a certain core group of event participants for years. It’s nice to see them year in and year out. It’s fun to see that dedication.” Tickets for the 35th annual Mission 10 Race in San Juan Bautista on Saturday Jan. 27, 2018 are available at https:// www.racemine.com/mission-10/events/2018/rotarymission-ten-2018. Prices vary depending on the race. For more information, call (831) 6370071 or visit the Mission 10 Race Facebook page.

VANESSA GARCIA IS BACK AFTER SUFFERING BROKEN LEG emanuel lee Sports Editor
When Vanessa Garcia took the field on Jan. 10 against Christopher High, it proved to be a milestone moment. The San Benito High junior was appearing in a game for the first time this season after suffering a broken right leg on Sept. 2 while playing for her club team at a tournament in San Diego. Garcia was running down the sideline and preparing to shoot when
an opposing player delivered a hard slide tackle. Garcia said a couple of people said they heard a snap upon contact. “I knew something was wrong when I wasn’t able to stand,” she said. “I couldn’t feel my leg.” A little over four months after suffering a broken leg, Garcia was back on the pitch playing defender for the Haybalers, who entered Wednesday’s game against Watsonville with a 2-1-0 record in Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division play. Talk about a quick recovery: Garcia’s determination and hard work allowed her to make a triumphant return. Garcia played the entire 80 minutes, never coming out for a substitute. “I was happy to be back,
but very nervous,” she said. “It felt good to be able to play and not just sit on the bench. I’m not a sitting down type of person. I like camping, taking hikes and
going on walks. I’m rarely indoors.” That’s what made the injury even tougher to take, because Garcia is super active and always on
the move. Throughout the recovery process, Garcia’s parents, Adam and Lori, kept her spirits up. Even during this tough time, ➝ Garcia, page 20

SHE’S BACK Balers junior Vanessa Garcia has made an incredible comeback from a broken
leg suffered on Sept. 2. San Benito played Watsonville on Wednesday in a Gabilan match.
BOYS SOCCER
Manny Luna makes the stops emanuel lee Sports Editor
The San Benito High boys soccer team won a Central Coast Section playoff game for the first time in program history last season. The Haybalers are showing that was no fluke, as they have looked downright impressive in posting a record of 6-1-6 overall and 3-0-2 in league play. San Benito opens the second half of league play with a match against Monterey on Thursday. The Balers and Monterey finished in a 1-1 draw in the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 2. Balers goalkeeper Manny Luna pointed to the team’s improved chemistry as being the decisive factor. “We have a lot of talent on the team again, but this year we’re more united,” he said. “We’re committed to each other on and
off the field. We’re good teammates, but we’re better friends.” Luna, a 5-foot-8, 153pound junior, has gained confidence with each match. He came on particularly strong in the championship match of the top division of the Homestead Tournament, which San Benito won for the first time in school history. The Balers defeated league rival Alvarez for the championship, with the result coming down to a penalty kick shootout. Luna played a pivotal role, as he stopped two shots to lead the Balers to a victory in the penalty kick session. Luna was downright bold and even a bit audacious during the shootout, talking trash to the first three Alvarez players who took shots. Before the penalty kicks, Luna was
having a conversation with a former goalkeeper in the crowd when he received this piece of advice. “I was told to pressure the shooters,” Luna said. “Before the players got to their spot to kick, I would grab the ball, bounce it a bit and tell them, ‘You’ve already missed, so there’s no point in you shooting. I know exactly where you’re going to go.’ Then I put the ball in their chest, so they backed up a little and seemed intimidated.” Say what you will about Luna’s tactics, but it worked. Two of Alvarez’s first three kickers were unsuccessful, paving the way for the Balers to prevail. Luna wouldn’t have been nearly so bold last year, when he served as the backup goalkeeper. However, Balers coach Marco Orozco has helped ➝ Luna, page 20

San Benito High won the Firebaugh High Tournament last weekend as Noah Zaragoza, Joe Delgado, Michael Guzman and Albert Rodriguez won their respective weight classes. Ricardo Gallardo finished in second place, Bryce Mattson and Matt Ramon had thirdplace finishes and three Haybalers— Nathan Morioka, Eric Fernandez and Enrique Ojeda—had sixth-place finishes. Zaragoza pulled out a 7-5 decision in the 113-pound division, Delgado scored a 15-5 major decision at 121 and Guzman went 4-0 at 139, recording three pins and a 17-7 major decision in the championship match. Rodriguez finished with three pins on his way to winning the 221pound division. Gallardo produced two pins and a major decision before dropping a 20-7 major decision to Avenal’s Fabian Maldonado in the 183-pound final. Mattson (161) and Ramon (171) both went 4-1 in their respective weight classes, with Ramon’s only defeat coming in an ultimate tiebreaker in his third match. That wasn’t the only nail-biter in Ramon’s tournament run, as he won in sudden death in the consolation semifinals. The senior won 4-0 to take third. Mattson recorded three pins en route to a thirdplace finish.

Crush Black U17 team. “The parents of some of the Christopher players were super shocked at how well I was moving,” Garcia said. Before her club season was cut short, Garcia was having the best season of her young career. She took a prominent role with Orchard Valley, playing the right wing position. Garcia has always played with a lot of energy and toughness, and she’s been an effective passer while playing for San Benito. Garcia only took up soccer five years ago, having done swimming and martial arts from an early age. Garcia loved the latter because “I like hitting people.” Garcia has always had a high threshold for pain, something she wears as a badge of honor. When Garcia got her ears pierced in the first grade, she didn’t cry. Whenever Garcia had a fever, she still went out to play. And whenever Garcia was at the hospital to get a shot, she would tell the nurse or doctor to get on with it and proceed
to watch them insert the needle into her arm. Garcia admitted that mentally and physically she’s not 100 percent back, however, she’s confident it’s only a matter of time before she can let it all out again. “I’m hard on myself, and I know I didn’t play as good as I wanted to against Christopher,” she said. “It’ll take some more time to get back into a groove, but I plan on getting there.” San Benito High coach Becky Bonner pointed to the play of goalkeeper Mariana Magana, Alex Mendoza and Carli Lowi as players who have played particularly well of late. Magana is a senior captain and back on the team after opting not to play last season. Mendoza scored two goals from 30 yards out in the Balers’ 4-1 win over Notre Dame-Salinas on Jan. 5. Lowi has made the switch to defender after playing on offense for the team a year ago, when she was one of the team leaders in goals and assists.

Garcia produced a 4.17 GPA in the first semester of her junior year. “That I was still able to maintain a high GPA while going through the injury and then the rehab, I’m pretty proud of that,” she said. Garcia took pleasure in the grueling rehab process—“It was hard, but I like working out and doing all that stuff,” she said—but it was only natural for Garcia to have thoughts of whether she would ever return to her previous form. “Everyday I’m thinking, ‘What if I don’t get better?’” she said. “This was my first big injury, and it’s easy to think you’re not going to be the same as you were before. But after a while, once I could start jumping and turning sharply, I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to come back and be better than ever.’” Garcia knows some of the players on Christopher High’s team because they play on the same club team, the Morgan Hill-based Orchard Valley

instill confidence in Luna. “I guess coach saw something in me this season, and I didn’t want to let him down,” Luna said. “Coach Marco told me that even though I was the backup last year, this was going to be my season to show what I could do. I didn’t want
to disappoint him.” Luna has done the opposite, playing solid in goal and making the position a strength for San Benito, which competes in arguably the top boys soccer league in the section. Luna has had no problem being vocal on the field. Goalkeepers have to bark out instructions to their defenders when
the opposing team has a set piece, free kick or is on the attack deep in the San Benito end of the field. “I know when I scream at the players, they know I’m just trying to do what is best for the team,” he said. “I just want to help out so we can all succeed as one. When I have the chance, I’ll be aggressive
as possible. I can come out and won’t hesitate to straight up ram up to the player and ball if I have to.” Luna underwent surgery for a torn left meniscus last June. It turned out to be a life-changing experience. Luna did rehab sessions three times a week for a total of 10 weeks. It was the people at the facility
where Luna got treated— “The building right next to Hazel Hawkins,” he said— that made him want to have an attitude change. “Before surgery, I didn’t get along with a lot of people,” he said. “But after surgery, I got to know a lot of the staff members, and they always put me in a happy
mood even if I was mad or sad. As soon as I arrived at the center, I would have conversations with them about school, society and other subjects. It was a really nice experience. Going through it (surgery and rehab) helped me improve as a player and person. I’m feeling better than ever.”

DRINKING WATER WARNING The City of San Juan Bautista Water System has high levels of nitrate DO NOT GIVE THE WATER TO INFANTS UNDER 6 MONTHS OLD OR PREGNANT WOMEN OR USE IT TO MAKE INFANT FORMULA Water sample results received from 12/1/2017 to 12/31/2017 showed nitrate levels ranging from 7.14 to 9.73 milligrams per liter. While these results do not exceed the nitrate standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), of 10 milligrams per liter, Nitrate monitoring results from June through November 2017 showed concentrations above the nitrate MCL. The City of San Juan Bautista is issuing this notice as a precaution because the water provided by the water system cannot be assured to reliably meet the nitrate MCL at all times. Nitrate in drinking water is a serious health concern for infants less than six months old. What should I do? • DO NOT GIVE THE WATER TO INFANTS. Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the MCL may quickly become seriously ill and, if untreated, may die because high nitrate levels can interfere with the capacity of the infant’s blood to carry oxygen. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blueness of the skin. Symptoms in infants can develop rapidly, with health deteriorating over a period of days. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. • PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD NOT CONSUME THE WATER. High nitrate levels may also affect the oxygencarrying ability of the blood of pregnant women. • Water, juice, and formula for children under six months of age should not be prepared with tap water. Bottled water or other water low in nitrates should be used for infants until further notice. • DO NOT BOIL THE WATER. Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrate level. Excessive boiling can make the nitrates more concentrated, because nitrates remain behind when the water evaporates. • If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor. What happened? What is being done? Nitrate in drinking water can come from natural, industrial, or agricultural sources (including septic systems, storm water run-off, and fertilizers). Levels of nitrate in drinking water can vary throughout the year. We will let you know when the amount of nitrate is again below the limit. The City is working to bring two new wells into the water system so that Well #2 (high nitrates) can be taken offline. The goal is to have the system back in compliance by November. For more information, please contact The City of San Juan Bautista at 831-623-4661 or 311 Second Street (P.O. Box 1420), San Juan Bautista, CA 95045. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this public notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. Secondary Notification Requirements Upon receipt of notification from a person operating a public water system, the following notification must be given within 10 days [Health and Safety Code Section 116450(g)]: • SCHOOLS: Must notify school employees, students, and parents (if the students are minors). • RESIDENTIAL RENTAL PROPERTY OWNERS OR MANAGERS (including nursing homes and care facilities): Must notify tenants. • BUSINESS PROPERTY OWNERS, MANAGERS, OR OPERATORS: Must notify employees of businesses located on the property. This notice is being posted by The City of San Juan Bautista. State Water System ID#: 3510002. Date distributed: 1/9/2018. Published: Hollister Free Lance, January 19, 2018.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
