San Benito County voters may to be asked again this fall to vote on a countywide sales tax, a one-cent levy that would fund road repairs, maintenance and transportation projects. Voters rejected a sales tax measure in 2016. The Council of San Benito County Governments, the county’s regional transportation agency, is currently working on a ballot measure that would go before voters in November 2018. “Bella,” who weighs almost six pounds, police said. Bella was immediately transported to a veterinarian for a health exam, then taken to the Hollister Animal Shelter, police said. On Feb. 3, the teen suspect was taken into custody at his home and booked at San Benito County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of felony animal cruelty, police said. Bella will be housed at the Hollister Animal Shelter until the police investigation is complete. Authorities arrested a 15-yearold Hollister boy on suspicion of felony animal cruelty after observing a social media video in which he is seen throwing a small Maltese dog to the ground, according to police. On Jan. 30, officers from Sunnyvale Animal Control contacted Hollister Police Animal Care and Services regarding a report of animal cruelty in Hollister, according to a press release. The officers in Sunnyvale obtained a Snapchat video showing a young male suspect posing with a toy breed dog in his arms,

before throwing the animal to the ground. The video appeared to show the puppy land almost 10 feet in front of him. Hollister Animal Care and Services officers conducted further investigation and learned there were previous unreported incidents of cruelty involving the same dog and suspect, police said. Sunnyvale Animal Control also had information of a previous incident in which the suspect had allegedly kicked the dog, making it land several feet away. Hollister officers confirmed the identity and address of the 15-year-old, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile. The city’s animal control officers visited his home Feb. 1 and took custody of the dog depicted in the video—an 8-month-old black-and-white Maltese named

Suspect in wife’s death is back in court Feb. 15 HUSBAND, WOMAN CHARGED WITH KILLING OF LAUNDROMAT OWNER Staff Report

A Hollister man and woman accused of killing the man’s wife in late 2017 will next appear in court Feb. 15 at the San Benito County Courthouse. Sang Ji, 49, the husband of murder victim Yoon Ji, and codefendant Jung Choi, 45, are

both charged with the December murder. They have remained in custody at county jail in lieu of $2.01 million bail, according to court documents. The purpose of the Feb. 15 hearing, scheduled for 9am, is to schedule a date for the two suspected murderers’ preliminary hearing. Investigators from the San Benito County Sheriff ’s Office found the remains of Yoon Ji, who owned the local Hollister Laundromat with her husband, in December off Salinas Grade Road between San Benito and Monterey counties,

outside San Juan Bautista. The FBI and Santa Clara County Human Remains Detection dogs assisted in that search. Police arrested Yoon Ji’s husband and Jung Choi on suspicion of the murder on Dec. 2. Sang Ji initially told county law enforcement that the codefendant is his cousin, though the relationship has not been verified. Yoon Ji’s daughter and sister, who live in Los Angeles, reported the woman missing Dec. 2. The daughter told sheriff ’s authorities that she had not heard from her mother since

about two weeks earlier, which was an unusually long amount of time to pass without contact. Just before reporting her mother missing, the daughter received a message from her father, Sang Ji, stating the mother had traveled to South Korea unexpectedly, according to authorities. The daughter then contacted family in South Korea, who said the mother was not there and they weren’t expecting her. The daughter and her sister then drove to Hollister from Los Angeles to confront Yung Ji, according to authorities.

When they arrived at the family home in Hollister, the father was with Jung Choi, whom he identified to his daughter as a cousin. But the daughter did not know the woman. The daughter became increasingly concerned about her missing mother, and contacted the sheriff ’s office to log a report, police said. Authorities acquired a search warrant and found evidence that suggested Yoon Ji had been killed. Police have not identified a motive for the killing, or method by which Yoon Ji was killed.

Gavilan athletic fields get major upgrades NEW VENUE FOR BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, BEACH V-BALL Scott Forstner Reporter

Nearly $7 million in upgrades to the outdoor athletic facilities at Gavilan College are in full swing. The end result will put the local community college in a league of its own. The multi-faceted project, which provides a complete overhaul of two existing sports facilities and adds a new sport venue to the school’s athletic cache, has three funding sources: Measure E, a local lease revenue bond and the college’s general fund. With the work having started back in July 17, 2017, the baseball field renovations include two new dugouts for the home and visiting teams as well as a new backstop. The adjacent softball field will be equipped with a large scorekeeper building and an ADA accessible bleacher. Both fields will also undergo drainage improvements. In addition, four new outdoor sand volleyball courts with new fencing and gates are in the process of being installed. Spectators will be treated to an athletics field plaza and walkways to both fields. Construction, which was approved by Gavilan’s Board of Trustees in June 2017 and slated for completion by March 22, will include a new restroom,

locker room buildig and outdoor plaza with new landscape and concrete walkways. “It’s going to be huge,” Gavilan Athletic Director Ron Hannon said. “There’s no way to underestimate the impact it’s going to have on these programs’ ability to recruit and ability to stay with modern times that so many other schools have enjoyed.” The volleyball area fencing and concrete construction work is already in progress with sand and gate hardware to follow, according to Frederick Harris, Gavilan’s vice president of administrative services. Gavilan will be one of only about 30 colleges throughout the state, including 10 in Northern California, to offer beach volleyball and only a select few that have courts on campus, according to Hannon. “For a brand new sport, to be able to have those facilities and have them on campus, not only does have impact recruiting for beach volleyball but it is a positive for indoor volleyball as well because a lot play both sports,” Hannon said. The baseball home and visitor dugouts have concrete walls in place, with roofing installation in progress and interior work to follow suit. The baseball backstop is also ongoing with fence pole installation with chain link fabric and padding to follow, according to Harris.

ow do we build on our strengths and maximize our opportunities? How do we reach out to others who have faced similar obstacles to learn from their experiences? How do we inspire our residents to come together to build our community that will be better for all? What is the recipe for economic vitality and creating a high quality of life for all residents? The Economic Development Corporation of San Benito County and its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Committee have spent the last 24 months conducting visioning, workshops, and collaborative meetings in order to arrive at the priorities and action plan in this strategy document. Again and again, the data shows the effects of the out-commuting phenomenon. At least half of the county’s employed residents commute to jobs outside the county—primarily Santa Clara and Monterey counties. Income levels, housing prices, poverty levels, retail sales, traffic congestion, the Jobs Housing Balance, and other data confirm that Hollister, San Juan Bautista and the unincorporated areas are “bedroom communities” that would greatly benefit by more local job opportunities. Projected growth in population, housing, employment, education, industrial output and farm output is expected to be between 1 percent and 1.6 percent per year for the foreseeable future. With the continued Silicon Valley influence, incomes and taxable sales may rise with inflation to as much as 2.5 percent per year. However, unless proactively addressed, the existing economic circumstances will not change. The clear solution is to create more incounty jobs by taking advantage of ample shovel-ready industrial land, and by actively recruiting in the traded and local clusters of food processing, manufacturing, bio and ag technologies, retail, healthcare, and visitor serving industries. Active recruitment will shift the economy toward stronger

employment and away from the forces favoring housing development and outcommuting. Tax revenues would likewise diversify. The three local jurisdictions and partner entities can affect the desired shift only if they invest together on staffing, promotion, broadband development, streamlined permitting, workforce skill development, and expanded visitor capacity. Travel spending and employment are lower than expected for a county with so many exciting attractions, indicating a clear area of opportunity – for enhanced downtown, cultural heritage and Mission San Juan Bautista-related, wine trail, State Park and other recreational visitation. Eight economic development objectives for the next five years and to the five Action items for the next 12 months.

Act Collaboratively among the three local jurisdictions and the many economic development entities within the county, recognizing the important role of each in a thriving local economy 2. Invest in Job Creation, Local business development and attraction: a promotion program to be led by new staff of the EDC of San Benito County, and supported by other member and service providers 3. Invest in talent development, retention and education: expanded collaborative engagement and program alignment by business, the Workforce Development Board, and local schools, universities and colleges 4. Improve the business climate and competitiveness: work on efficient and timely customer service 5. Invest in infrastructure maintenance and growth, including transportation, broadband, housing opportunities, cold storage, energy, water conservation and wastewater treatment; 6. Support an entrepreneurial culture, including supporting innovation and

The Five Action Items for the Next 12 Months These action items are focused on implementing Objectives 1 and 2 above, with significant and measurable progress by the end of calendar year 2018: 1. Expanded funding for economic development staff, housed at the Economic Development Corporation and funded by a number of entities. Options may include grants, memberships, municipal general fund support and possibly an increased TOT tax 2. Joint business retention, expansion, and attraction, including target industry recruitment, active listening to the needs of existing businesses, broadband and studying the feasibility of a workshare/telecommuting facility 3. Collaboration, resource and data sharing including sharing best practices and filling information gaps useful to job creation and an improved business climate 4. Teaming on improved pre-application and permitting processes and infrastructure issues including ensuring speedy approvals, good advance processing and cost information for business, and forming ‘red teams’ to problem solve with applicants and business that may be considering leaving 5. Develop and implement a more robust tourism marketing and promotion plan, including the wine trail, considering a hospitality district, possibly increasing the TOT tax rate, joint promotion with local attractions, and metrics to evaluate effectiveness

atty passed away on February 2, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Patty was born and raised in Oregon and moved with her family to Hollister in 1966. Patty worked for Gavilan College in the Aviation Department located at the Hollister Airport. Although her responsibilities were administrative she grew to love aviation and the many Airframe and Power Plant and Flight Training students that passed through these programs. Later in her career she became an FAA examiner for private pilot licenses. She was a prolific reader and had a wide range of interests.

urelia Monteon Maldonado passed away in Hollister on December 12, 2017, she was 87. Aurelia is survived by her nine children, Miguel, Guadalupe, Gilberto, Victor, Guillermo and Sara Maldonado, and Genoveva Muñoz, Estela Shackelford and Sonia Dorado, twenty-five grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters: Sara, Gabriel, Ramon, Elisa, Jose and Emigdio Monteon; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

Not many industries are eager to be taxed, but the burgeoning cannabis industry in Hollister is willing to pay in order to operate in a market now friendly to recreational, adult-use businesses. "Taxes are a concern in the industry, and if you add state and local taxes together, they’re being taxed at 30 to 40 percent,” said Victor Gomez, president of political consulting firm Pinnacle Strategy. “The industry understands that they can pay these high taxes if they can operate legally. They want to be regulated.” Gomez, former mayor and member of the Hollister City Council, helps his clients in the cannabis industry navigate the turbulent waters of city government. “I expect [cannabis business] taxes to go up by 500 percent,” Gomez said. “I have clients tell me now that they pay up to $100,000 a year in taxes as a medical cannabis manufactory at a 5 percent tax on gross receipts. They tell me that if they are allowed to operate as a recreational facility that there is no reason that they wouldn’t pay the city up to $400,000 to $500,000 a year in taxes. That can make a significant impact that can pay up to three additional police officers, code enforcement, and planning workers as well as the cannabis coordinator. It’s a lot of jobs.” The City of Hollister has approved permits for two medical dispensaries, Purple Cross Rx and Monterey Bay Alternative Medicine, along

business thrive, and it allows other businesses an opportunity to thrive because of it. Businesses that support the cannabis industry, such as agricultural supply businesses and insurance companies, thrive as well.” Support for recreational marijuana, as seen in the passage of Proposition 64, is strong in Hollister as it is in the rest of the state, where it passed by over 57 percent of the vote. “Over 60 percent of Hollister voters voted for Proposition 64,” Gomez said. “I’m not a personal user myself, but I think it’s about the business injection.” Concerns over security and a potential increase in crime to Gomez are unfounded. Now that the illegality of cannabis has been removed, the "cool" factor has declined. "It’s kind of like Cuban cigars,” Gomez said. “As soon as they were legal, it wasn’t exciting anymore. I think it’s kind of like what we experienced back in the 20’s and 30’s with alcohol. I think you have a higher chance of getting shot at a pharmacy, than a cannabis dispensary. You have people robbing pharmacies for oxycodone. From a security perspective, there is no proof that there is a security problem.” The approval process to obtain permits to operate cannabis businesses can be onerous in Hollister, but it is part of Gomez's job to help his clients navigate through the process. To him, there is a good reason why it can be a difficult process. “In general the approval process can be cumbersome compared to the state,” Gomez said. “It’s not easy for anyone to get. That’s the point. They want to make sure everyone is well vetted.”

with a handful of cannabis manufacturing, distributing, and cultivation businesses such as Euphoric Life Inc., High Class Distribution, Hollister Holistics, Traditional Roots, Pacific Organics and Wellness, and Agripharma Extraction and Nursery. To Gomez, Hollister's tax structure is a good reason for more cannabis business to come to Hollister. The council also unanimously approved a cannabis testing lab, High Sierra Analytics, on Monday. Starting on July 1, cannabis will be required to go through laboratory inspection before products may be sold. Demand should be high since the closest testing laboratory in the region is located in Santa Cruz. Hollister will receive for $7 a square foot for cultivation, and 5 percent of gross revenue for manufacturing, distribution, testing, and medical dispensaries. Other cities tax rates are higher. “The taxes in Hollister are fairly reasonable,” Gomez said. “They’re being taxed at around 15 percent in Monterey County and in places in Southern California they’re paying up to 20 percent. Hollister is welcoming to the business community, and in this case, they are welcoming the cannabis industry.” Gomez first became acquainted with the cannabis industry when he worked in city government in San Jose. From there and in his career in local city politics, Gomez became a supporter of the industry. “I support the industry because I think it’s a good way to make illegal businesses legit businesses,” Gomez said. “For me, it’s important to have

allowed medical cannabis businesses to apply and move through the city’s application and permitting process. Council members previously approved a medical cannabis ordinance in December 2016 on the heels of Proposition 64, which legalized recreational cannabis throughout the state. Since then, the city has approved two medical dispensaries within city limits, as well as a multitude of cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution businesses. “Since this ordinance was passed originally in the end of 2016, the state’s made a lot of changes both to Prop 64 and the medical cannabis regulations, merging them together,” said Sal Palma of Hollister Holistics, a local cannabis business that holds multiple use permits for cultivation and manufacturing. In June 2017, Governor Jerry Brown approved Senate Bill 94, which repealed the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act and consolidated medical and recreational cannabis under the Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis

Regulation Safety Act. “Essentially what they’ve done is they’ve taken a medication that once required a prescription and made it available over the counter to those over the age of 21,” Palma said. “It doesn’t make it any less of a medication, it just requires that one not have to go get a prescription or doctor’s recommendation to obtain it.” Others in the local cannabis industry came to speak in support of allowing recreational, adult-use cannabis on the supply chain side of the industry. “We are very strongly in support of the cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution for the adult-use as you go along,” said Gary Coates on behalf of Monterey Bay Alternative Medicine, who was awarded a permit last October to operate a medical cannabis dispensary at 773 San Felipe Road. “In the future, this will probably come back to questions for the dispensaries. This evening, we don’t want to slow this process down and feel this needs to move forward. We would just like you to be aware that in the future we’d like to come

back to you for consideration of dispensary use for adult sales of cannabis products.” While Velazquez indicated during the meeting that he would be willing to talk about recreational dispensaries down the line, he said he felt the city was not ready yet. The local business community also supported adult-use, as shown in a Feb. 1 letter to the city council from San Benito County Chamber of Commerce President Juli Vieira. “For this new industry to thrive in Hollister, add more jobs for our residents, and inject millions of dollars into the local economy, the council should now expand that ordinance to include recreational licensing for cultivators, manufacturers, and dispensaries,” Vieira wrote on behalf of the chamber and its over 380 members. “As you are aware, being ahead on this issue is important. If you play the waiting game and bypass allowing recreation licensing, all of your businesses will go to surrounding cities that will allow it, in turn capturing all of the additional tax revenues that you kindly passed to them.”

specifically what projects would be funded under the measure,” Transportation Planner Veronica Lezama said at last week’s intergovernmental committee meeting. “We are working closely with the cities and the county to develop that expenditure plan.” The current county road network—673 miles of asphalt— needs various infrastructure improvements including regular road maintenance and a $180 million Highway 25 upgrade. The average condition of county roads is considered a poor 38, according to the pavement condition index that rates roads on a scale from one to 100. Upgrades and ongoing maintenance won’t come cheap. The county previously estimated it needed $398 million to maintain and repair all existing roads. The transportation agency’s long-term Regional Transportation Plan anticipates a $1.8 billion need

in regional road repairs, highways, and other transportation projects through the year 2040. Traditional federal, state, and other local funding sources are only anticipated to cover $1.1 billion of the need. This fiscal year, San Benito County received over $650,000 from Senate Bill 1, which passed in the California legislature in 2017 and increased state gas taxes and vehicle license fees in order to raise funds for the state highway system and local roads. It is projected that SB1 revenues will increase over the years and the county could receive up to $2.68 million by fiscal year 2020/2021. Despite that, concern over a possible attempt to repeal SB1 has prompted more interest in establishing a local sales tax to pay for regional road needs. “Over the next month, [the agency] will be conducting a public poll followed by finalizing the expenditure plan and ballot question in May, ordinance

approval by local jurisdictions in June, followed by the elections day deadline in August, and then of course the election in November of this year,” Lezama said. This is not the first time county voters have seen a 30-year regional transportation sales tax. In 2016, voters rejected Measure P, which would have funded road repairs via a local sales tax. San Benito County voters rejected Measure P in June 2016, when it fell short of the needed 66.67 percent by nearly 7 percentage points: 40.23 percent said No and 59.77 percent said Yes. Neighboring regions like Santa Cruz County, Monterey County, and Santa Clara County were successful in passing their own 30-year sales tax increases that year. The funding breakdown of Measure P had about 50 percent of funds going to Highway 25, 30 percent to local road repair, and the remaining 20 percent maintenance of the road

network, Lezama said. It is unclear what the breakdown of funding under the new proposed sales tax would be. Agency Executive Director Mary Gilbert said the breakdown for the new sales tax will be revealed in the future expenditure plan. During the intergovernmental agency meeting, Hollister Councilman Karson Klauer said he was concerned about the amount of time to get the word out about a local transportation sales tax. “It’s about building trust and communication with the community,” County Supervisor and agency Chairman Jaime De La Cruz said. The transportation agency plans to hold more public meetings over the next three months regarding the potential sales tax and expenditure plan. “For Measure P, we did do an extensive outreach,” Lezama said. “The majority of the public expressed interest with having a variety of infrastructure

projects. They provided support for Highway 25, as well as bicycles and pedestrians. That’s our goal, to try and see what the community is saying and incorporate that into the new sales tax. We are definitely taking a lot of lessons learned from Measure P and incorporating it in this sales tax so hopefully it’ll be a successful one.” Resource Management Agency Director John Guertin expressed the importance of communicating with the community about the potential sales tax. “It is their roads and money,” Guertin said. “They need to understand what they are approving and see that work actually get done.” The next regular transportation agency board meeting is on Feb. 15 at 3pm at 481 Fourth St. in Hollister. Hollister police arrested three young in possession of loaded firearms after they were seen displaying the weapons while drinking alcohol in a public parking lot, according to authorities. About 9pm Jan. 30, Hollister

Police officers responded to a report of several men hanging out in the parking lot of Jack In The Box, 391 McCray Street, reads a press release. The officers heard the group was drinking alcoholic beverages and brandishing handguns in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they contacted five males who were loitering in and around a vehicle, police said. The officers investigated the scene and found that Daniel Villagomez, 20, and

Alfred Valencia, 19, were in possession of loaded, concealed handguns. Both were arrested without incident. Villagomez was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, having a firearm concealed in a vehicle and possession of stolen property, the press release states. Valencia was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, concealing a firearm in a vehicle and obstruction, police said. The driver of the vehicle,

Jose Astorga, 20, was arrested on suspicion of allowing firearms in his vehicle. Officers also found ammunition in the vehicle, and later learned one of the recovered firearms had been stolen, police said. Two juveniles at the scene were also contacted by officers, and released to their parents, according to police. The press release adds, “Law enforcement depends on its partnership with the community including people willing to

come forward and report crimes. It is with their help that we can achieve our mutual goal to make Hollister a safer community. For the first time in program history, San Benito High will be sending two girls to the CIF State Wrestling Championships. Sophomore Jenna Hartman and senior Maribel Saucedo earned state berths with strong showings in last Saturday’s Central Coast Section Championships at Overfelt High. Hartman and Saucedo won third-place matches in their respective weight classes, with Hartman defeating Santa Cruz’s Maya Letona 2-0 at 111 pounds and Saucedo

Saucedo utilized a classic wrestling move—the barb wire—to get the pin. “She used a cross face series that we work on in

practice quite a bit,” Haybalers coach Steven Salcedo said. “I’m really excited for all the girls, especially Maribel. She has grown not only on the mat, but in school, too. She was rough around the edges

as a freshman and sophomore, but I’ve been getting real nice compliments from her teachers and people at school saying they see a difference in her. Wrestling has helped change her demeanor and

Hartman, who suffered a bloody nose early in the bout, looked like she had been in a brawl as the referee raised her hand in victory. “I’m not sure what to think; it’s like it didn’t even happen,” she said. “It was a pretty intense match because we both know each other well. I had to play defense with her being an aggressive wrestler.” Hartman had already beaten Letona twice this season, both via pinfall. However, the third match between the two standouts proved to be a battle of attrition, with points hard to come by. Hartman said it was difficult scoring points because of how familiar they were with one another. “I didn’t take any shots because I didn’t see any

Once they finally let that go, success came quickly.” Granted, part of Anzar’s turnaround is due to the fact that it is playing less talented teams in the Coastal compared to the strong sides it played in the non-league portion of its schedule. After opening the season with a 15-0 loss to North Monterey County, the Anzar High boys soccer team had nowhere to go but up. And that’s exactly what the Hawks have done. Anzar entered the week with a 6-1-1 record in the Mission Trail Coastal League, good for a virtual tie for first place with Pacific Collegiate (5-1-0). Should Anzar win the division, it would play a team from the upper league for the MTAL’s last automatic playoff berth. Anonth Srisavathay, a senior midfielder, doesn’t

go more than an hour everyday without thinking about the postseason. “It would be a dream come true if we could make CCS,” he said. “I know the seniors want to do something to put Anzar on the map, and I feel like this is the season to do it. We’re good teammates, and outside of that, we’re better friends. Our bond is so strong, and that really helps to play for each other.” To get there, the team needed to hash things out in a meeting a couple of days before the start of league play. “Everyone aired their frustrations and problems,” said Raul Vega, who is in his second season as the Anzar coach. “They finally let go of

of sessions on their front yard. It’s something he remembers fondly. “He’s my idol,” Anonth said. “When I began playing my first year of soccer at 7 or 8, I was completely trash. I had no idea what to do, and my dad saw me and said, ‘OK, we’re going to fix this.’ He showed me how to properly pass and kick until I was able to do it on my own. He created a strong bond with me and is basically my best friend and one of my biggest motivators.” Srisavathay and Vega said the team meeting was the key to the team’s turnaround. Anzar played some strong teams while it was still trying to forge an identity. “We were still finding ourselves,” Vega said. “The guys didn’t believe in themselves at the beginning of the season. It was a struggle to get the guys to believe in themselves and believe in the team. We needed to get beat down to our lowest point in order to get back up on the saddle.”

goalkeeper whose best days are ahead of him. “I feel quote-unquote he might be the franchise player in the future,” Vega said. “This kid showed nerves of steel I’ve never seen from a lot of goalies, let alone a freshman.” Srisavathay knows his role, crediting Vega for keeping everyone together and making the game fun. Srisavathay possesses a strong leg, able to put powerful shots on goal from 40 yards away. More important, if Srisavathay is touching the ball a lot, it’s a great sign for Anzar. “If I can control the game from the midfield, I already know the outcome,” he said. “As soon as I get the ball, I look up and my job is to find my wingers on the run. I also need to create space with the dribble, take a shot or pass it out. I have great vision on the field and see everything around me, with good game awareness.” Srisavathay has been inspired by his dad, Seng, who taught the game to his son through hundreds

Srisavathay and Vasquez have done a great job of manning the midfield and dictating play. “They’re the key to our success this season,” Vega said. “If we control the midfield, we control the games. Everything goes at our pace.” Bocanegra and Cerritos have also played pivotal roles at fullback. Bocanegra is one of the most physical players in the league, and uses his speed to outrun the opposition and win 50-50 balls. “Alejandro has been a revelation for us,” Vega said. “He didn’t play the previous three years, but he’s an intelligent player who knows how to protect the forwards and when to attack when he’s on the wing. He’s definitely holding it down for us.” Vega noted the play of Rodriguez, a freshman

first match, she masterfully focused on the task at hand, moving through the bracket with a simple approach. A wrestler of few words, Saucedo is the epitome of letting your actions do all the talking. She stuck to her strengths, using several single-leg

takedowns en route to a third-place finish. “I wanted to go to state and do my best,” Saucedo said. “I’m excited to go to state. I’ve improved since I was a freshman. I have more skill and I’m quicker.” Salcedo was proud of the entire team, and can’t wait to see how it competes

going forward. Madeline Pena, a budding sophomore, took fifth in the 121pound division. Pena was unseeded, but produced one of her best tournament performances of the season at the perfect time. “Maddie got her feet wet last year, and this year she took a big step up,” Salcedo

said. “We’re looking forward to her working out in the summer and coming into next year with big goals.” If Hartman continues to improve, there’s no telling how far she could go. Hartman has an indefatigable work ethic, and has made huge strides from just a year ago.

“I’ll work harder this summer so I can get in the first and second place match next year,” she said. “Jenna has been our most committed wrestler,” Salcedo said. “She put in extra work over the summer, did a few camps and has really been taking wrestling seriously. We expect

her to continue to do freestyle (tournaments) this summer, and we’re looking forward to the future. The only girl that gave her trouble was from North Salinas, and she is a senior. Coming into the season next year, Jenna should be one or two in the CCS. She’s that committed.”
