Pinnacles fees rise, cuts loom In future NATIONAL PARK ADDS NEW HIKING TRAIL By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Michael Moore
With poppies and other wildflowers in bloom, Bear Gulch filled with water and California condors soaring above volcanic peaks, Pinnacles National Park is in its peak season. Park rangers say that April is the most popular month for hikers of all ages to enjoy one of the newest jewelt in the National Park system, located at the southwest corner of San Benito County. The new year saw the opening of a new hiking trail from the western entrance to the park, east of Soledad, and another increase in vehicle entrance fees. A seven-day vehicle pass now costs $25—five times greater than when the new park opened five years ago—and another $5 increase is expected later this year. Drastic cuts to national park staffing that had been included in last year’s budget proposed by the Trump Adminstration are on hold, but loom in the new budget year.
COUNTY JAIL EXPANSION San Benito County Sheriff’s Capt. Don Bradley, the county’s special projects captain overseeing the jail expansion, stands in front of the facility construction site on Flynn Road April 12, with the current 26-year-old jail in the background.

They’re about 24 days behind on the contract, mostly due to weather-related delays. Protesters held signs in front of St. Mary’s Church that read, “Stop killing us. Our children. Our fathers, moms. Our brothers, sisters,” and “Stop police brutality. No justice, no peace.” Some held smaller signs depicting Juarez’ photo and the slogan “Justice for Stevie.” Many of the protesters said they were amazed at the lack of any statement from Mayor Roland Velasco, Police Chief Scot Smithee and council members since Feb. 25. Juarez’ brother, Daniel Salcido, said during the April 16 protest that city and police officials were quick to offer information about the incident that is

Nearly two months after the death of Steven Juarez in police custody, friends and family of the Gilroyan are not giving up in their effort to demand answers from City Hall and its police department. Specifically, Juarez’ family—consisting of several generations of Gilroy residents—wants to know more about the Gilroy Police Department’s use of force policy, review the police camera footage from the Feb. 25 incident that ended in Juarez’ death and learn why nobody from the city or police department has expressed their condolences to the family, according to Juarez’ cousin Rebeca Armendariz.
They also want to know the names of the seven officers involved in the Feb. 25 incident on Chestnut Street in east Gilroy, and why none of them were placed on any kind of leave following Juarez’ death. “Why haven’t our elected officials done their due diligence?” Armendariz wondered. About 30 people, including the brother and sister of Juarez, packed a City Council meeting on Monday, April 16, and 10 of them lined up to speak to the council about their concerns. “Why are the police still being paid, and why are they still working?” pondered Mathilda Lopez, another cousin of Juarez’ who joined a small group of protesters the afternoon of April 16 at the corner of Monterey Road and First Street. “You take a life and just take a shower the next

Berglund was recognized at the the district’s Board of Trustees’ meeting for earning the letter of commendation from the Hollister Police Department. In a commendation letter to Berglund, Capt. Carlos Reynoso, a 1987 San Benito graduate, told Berglund that her “professionalism and commitment to your school and the citizens of this community are exemplified in your work and your daily actions.” “The Hollister Police Department is truly lucky to have someone of your caliber in a position to affect change and provide assistance,” he added. As part of the commendation, former School Resource Officer Juan Guevara, who recently became the department’s gang officer, praised Berglund for her communication skills in assisting the police department in its partnership with the high school district. The Free Lance was honored this month with two first-place awards in the 2017 California Journalism Awards contest of the California News Publishers Association. The Free Lance won first place in the Enterprise News category, for a series of news articles written by Managing Editor Barry Holtzclaw on county school board
trustee Mitchell Dabo’s transfer of more than $640,000 from a local charitable trust to his personal accounts. “Well done,” wrote the CNPA judge of Holtzclaw’s articles. “Reporting and writing are top-notch. Way to stay with this story.” The Free Lance also won a first-place award for an editorial on the Dabo case, “Leaders silent on Dabo,” and was a finalist for another editorial, “Mitchell Dabo’s departure from public life is long overdue,” both also written by Holtzclaw.
The awards were announced at the annual California Journalism Awards luncheon on April 14 in Sonoma. Free Lance sister newspapers also won awards. The Morgan Hill Times was a finalist for youth and education reporting, by Scott Forstner, education writer for the Free Lance as well as the Times. Metro Silicon Valley won four awards, including a first place for investigative journalism and for its arts and entertainment coverage.

OPINION
Trade war is a ‘lose-lose’ for San Benito’s agriculture
U
NITED STATES Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in late March that he didn’t expect President Trump’s tariff announcements to have “a big impact on the economy.” He even went so far as to say that “what we’re doing is long-term very good for the economy.” Mnuchin is a film producer, with one foot in Hollywood and the other in Wall Street. It’s clear he has never set foot on a California farm, although he no doubt has shared in the harvest. So when the treasury secretary talks about “the economy,” he may be talking about his economy, but clearly isn’t talking about ours —the nearly half-billion-dollar annual agricultural economy in San Benito County and southern Santa Clara County. Surely, Mnuchin and his boss anticipated that China would respond to initial steel and aluminum tariff threats from the U.S. with its own tariff threats aimed directly at U.S. farmers, in both red and blue states. China followed its initial announcement early this month of 15-25 percent tariffs on nuts, fruits, wine and vegetables—California’s key exports—with a second announcement a week later of more tariffs targeting the Midwest’s giant soybean producers. Among the Chinese targets are some of the biggest money crops in San Benito
County and southern Santa Clara County— fruit, nuts and wine. China did not indicate when the tariffs would go into effect but said it would implement them in two parts. The first part would affect 120 U.S. products valued at $977 million, including fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and wine, with a 15 percent tariff, if China fails to reach an agreement with the United States. The list of Chinese tariff announcements reads like a shopping list for the top agricultural products of our two counties, products that are produced by our friends and neighbors, real people whose livelihoods are threatened by the callous and arbitrary policies being pursued in Washington. Our farmers stand to lose momentum in a worldwide competition for a share of the rapidly expanding Chinese consumer market. In San Benito County, here are some of the top crops threatened by the possible trade war, with their total domestic and international 2016 sales: Fruit and nuts crops: $49.4 million Salad greens: $43.9 million Peppers: $33 million Romaine lettuce: $32.9 million Wine grapes: $31.1 million Spinach: $25.3 million Kale: $19 million Onions/garlic: $12.9 million

He says he is hopeful the tariffs on China can be avoided through negotiation, but as the situation deteriorates, the Trump administration is prepared for an escalation of its trade dispute with China. “There is the potential of a trade war,” Mnuchin admitted this month. The looming trade war won’t serve the interests of U.S. farmers or U.S. consumers, but plays well to the President’s America First rhetoric aimed at his political base. It’s time for agricultural producers to flex their muscles, and to demand that our Congressional representatives stand up to the President and halt this trade war before it starts. Instead of the “win-win” predicted by Mnuchin, it sure looks like a “lose-lose” situation from here.

Hudick said “flat, easy trails”—one a mile and another 1.7 miles— are accessible from the west side parking lot and visitor center. President Trump’s proposed Interior Department budget for the 2018 fiscal year —still under review—would increase funding for energy development on public lands while cutting virtually everything else, including the National Park Service. Overall the budget would cut the Department of the Interior’s spending by roughly 12 percent. Last month the National Park Service released its budget justification, explaining the requested funding levels and their impacts. The National Park Service would lose 1,242 full-time

In the meantime, the parking is enjoying a bright spring, says Park Ranger Beth Hudick. She said there are hiking trails that serve the most novice and the most experienced hiker, meandering among jutting volcanic spires, cliffs, and peaks in the dense chaparral country of the Gabilan Range. She also advised that weekday visits may be a better time for locals, avoiding heavier weekend traffic. She is one of 40 staff that provide sevenday assistance to visitors. Pinnacles offers 32 miles of trails, accessible from two entrances. There is no road that stretches across the width of the 41-square mile park, connecting east and west entrances. It’s a 7-mile hike from one side to the other. Geologists say the spectacular rock formations at Pinnacles were formed about 23 million years ago, when the region was all volcanoes. The east side of the park is located off Highway 25, about 30 miles south of Hollister. The west side of Pinnacles is 12 miles east of Soledad, off Highway 101. Both entrances to the monument are located on Highway 146, which is obstructed within the park boundary by the Pinnacles rock formations. staffing levels, leading to a reduction in services to the public. Likewise, support programs would also experience staffing and service level reductions, which further impacts parks.
Environmentalists fear that not only would cuts impact the visitor experience, they would hamper the National Park Service’s ability to preserve natural resources.

New firm promises faster internet speeds NEW WIRELESS PROVIDER TARGETS HARDTO-REACH AREAS, LOOKS TO HOLLISTER Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
“Bullet Wireless is looking forward to expanding into the underserved communities of Hollister and Aromas in the near future,” Bacolini said. “We have a lot of businesses in these communities and we look forward to improving their quality of life with speed they can count on.” Aside from Bullet’s work in Paradise Valley in west Morgan Hill, they are working to connect customers along Watsonville Road and DeWitt Avenue, to several ranches on the north end of Morgan Hill, along with an extension of services to Gilroy. Bullet hopes to connect between 11,000 to 12,000 customers with high-speed internet. The speed for some customers has skyrocketed, going from .5 megabytes to 30 megabytes. That’s like going from a horse and buggy to the Starship Enterprise. “At Morgan Hill Cellars they were always having trouble with their internet,” Bacolini said. “Since
they’ve been with us, they can’t believe the kind of service they’ve been getting.” Today's modern largescale ranching operations are not your old-fashioned "Farmer John" kind of outfits anymore. Increasingly, they require extensive high-speed internet. “If you have a 3,000-square-foot ranch, you might have more than 50 water distribution sites, remote cameras and a lot of machinery that require internet, and you won’t be able to run that unless you have between 75 megabytes to 100 megabytes,” Bacolini said. “We have several that exceed 100 terabytes, and if you are on a satellite connection, the overages can cost up to $50,000 in fees. We don’t believe in slowing people down; you can run unlimited wherever you are.” Bullet’s Micro-Pop solar towers are direct competitors to large satellite highspeed internet providers such as HughesNet, which is good news for online gamers.
Bullet Wireless
For new Morgan Hill neighborhoods, outlying ranches, or businesses where fiberoptic cable lines haven't yet reached, getting adequate high-speed internet may not only be frustrating, but it can hinder economic progress. To help bring internet services from these areas into the fast lane, Bullet Wireless is one company that offers services that help to increase internet speed and quality. It’s all in a name for Bullet Wireless—no need to lay lines. In underserved new neighborhoods such as Paradise Valley, Bullet installs Micro-Pop Solar relay towers, which can provide highspeed internet to areas that
Charter or Frontier won’t reach. The relatively small size of Bullet's Micro-Pop local towers also requires far less permitting, according to Bullet Wireless Chief Executive Officer Trevor Bacolini. “This allows us to build a local network quickly while a standard substation may take up to six months,” Bacolini said. Bullet has continued to expand its tower range to reach more and more customers in remote areas. For a variety of needs, Bullet uses Micro-Pops, which stand between seven and eight feet, a standard 15 to 20 foot tower for larger jobs, and 40-foot towers for urban applications. For Charter and Frontier, it’s a matter of profitability when either company decides to lay more cable. Running new cable lines can cost up to $1 million per mile, and if either company cannot make a profit from the potential new customers, they won’t lay the new lines.
COUNTRY CONNECTIONS For new neighborhoods, farms, or homes in remote areas, connecting to the high-speed internet has been a challenge. A Micro-Pop Solar tower like the one shown is one of the solutions Bullet Wireless provides. While HughesNet internet depends on connections with satellites, Bullet’s towers are nearby. The difference of a millisecond can make online gaming not only frustrating but almost impossible. For residential customers, a package that would allow two people to stream YouTube videos will cost about $100 a month. The
next package up, which would bump a home’s internet access to the national average, costs $150. For businesses, which require more upload and download speed, 100-megabyte service will cost between $1,300 to $1,500 a month. Lower, burst speed, packages for businesses cost between $500 and $600 a month.
Hollister entrepreneurs eye cash prizes TWO OWNERS TO COMPETE IN SALINAS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

Ohana Shaved Ice and Arti-Culture will vie for cash prizes at the finale on May 12, at the Salinas City Center in downtown Salinas. Before they can claim an award, both businesses will need to perform under the bright lights in a California State University Monterey Bay version of "Shark Tank," a popular ABC reality show starring Mark Cuban, Robert
Herjavec, and Kevin O'Leary. Ohana Shaved Ice and Arti-Culture are among the 21 finalists, from a field that included 81 local small businesses and nonprofits. Holi festival colors celebrate spring SOUTH VALLEY INDIAN FEST REACHES OUT TO FAMILIES WITH COLOR Debra Eskinazi

Scott Hinrichs
A colorful springtime celebration came late this year for celebrants of the South Asian spring festival of renewal, Holi. The Sunday, April 15 event took place in a smash of colors at Community Park in Morgan Hill with more than 160 festival goers in attendance. Heavy March rains forced the rescheduling of the event from its normal new moon celebration on Poornima day—typically occurring during February or March in the Hindu calendar, which is lunisolar, meaning it is guided by both the moon and the sun. Hosted by the Indian Association of South County (IASC), Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil—the bright spring season emerging from the cold winter. Steeped in love and vibrant colors, vice president of IASC Monica Iyer said the traditional Hindu festival celebrates the Avatar Lord Vishnu and the story of how he defeated and killed an evil demon called Hiranyakashyap and his evil sister, the demoness Holika. The holiday is typically celebrated with a bonfire, reminiscent of the fire that
according to legend was used by Lord Vishnu to burn Holika. “In modern times, it has also become a bigger celebration with colors,” said Iyer. Although it has its origins as a Hindu festival, Holi has a broader cultural significance and is observed among various Indian subcultures, she added. With more than 400 community members in South Valley, Iyer noted the IASC is a secular non-profit. Beyond Indian celebrations, the IASC is eager to share its cultural traditions with the broader community. “Our aim is to celebrate our culture and traditions and pass it down to our kids,” she said. “At the same time, we also want to share our rich tradition with our friends in the community who are not from India. Our celebrations are open to all. We are not religion-based.” Meeting new people and making new friends is an important part of the festivities, she added. “There is a lot of fun and frolic and most importantly our children have a fabulous time together,” Iyer said. “It is one event where even our teen kids love to come, get painted, play with water guns and just have a chilled-out time all day. It is a really feel good day for all of us.”

FIRM FOUNDATION Foundations are laid and new walls wlll soon rise as county jail grows to handle more inmates.
More county inmates stay longer ➝ Jail, 1
the state AB900 law. The county will likely be required to match up to $7 million of local funds to fully finance the project which “will meet San Benito’s needs for the next 30 to 40 years,” according to Board of Supervisors Chair Anthony Botelho. “San Benito County is the envy of many other counties that are still on a waiting list (for AB900 funds) and the county has worked on this project for a number of years,” Botelho said. He noted that the project started under former Sheriff Curtis Hall’s leadership, with Thompson continuing the effort. Bradley noted that increasing costs of construction materials— notably steel—since 2007 have raised the overall projected price tag for the expansion, from what was once estimated at less than $20 million. Currently, the county has not fully funded new staffing requirements for
the larger facility, but Botelho said they are required by law to adequately staff the jail. Bradley, a law enforcement retiree who is working as the sheriff ’s parttime Special Projects Captain overseeing the jail expansion, said the new facility will need at least five additional correctional officers and one civilian Staff Services Specialist. That is, if they can connect the old jail’s control room with that of the new facility, creating a single security system for the entire property. However, the technology in the old jail is not compatible with that proposed for the new facility, and staff are still working on an effort to combine the two, Bradley said. If they can’t connect the two control rooms, staffing needs will increase. The county’s 201718 budget lists the hiring of four additional officers to staff the new jail as a “long-range planning goal” for the sheriff ’s

office. That adds up to well over $500,000 for a full year’s salaries and benefits for four officers—with the county on the hook for most of that amount—and rising if more staff positions are needed. The current jail has a staff of 26, according to the 2017-18 county budget. Those funds have not yet been budgeted. Sheriff ’s staff and the board of supervisors will consider the expenses in the coming weeks as the five-member board determines the 2018-19 budget. “I am confident the county will be able to meet the financial requirements of the new jail expansion,” Botelho said. “Finding qualified recruits may be more troublesome in the very tight job market.”
Rehab vs. incarceration
Since the county gained state funding for the jail project in 2007, additional state laws—such as AB109
and Proposition 47—have drastically affected correctional institutions and inmate requirements throughout California. In San Benito County, the jail population used to be significantly comprised of lower-level offenders serving sentences of one year or less. The average sentence in San Benito County Jail was 33 days before AB109 became law in 2011. “Now, they’re serving five to seven years, with more medical and mental health needs,” Bradley said. Longer sentences are related to the state’s effort to reduce the prison population by shifting responsibility for certain felony offenders—as well as their medical and mental health needs—from state facilities to local jails. Bradley added, “This is pretty much a felony facility. If you’re a lowlevel offender, you’re out on the street” with monitoring or probation. The new state

correction laws also offer more educational opportunities to inmates, allowing them to work toward reducing their sentences. The San Benito County Jail expansion is designed to accommodate those efforts. Inmates who participate in education programs can work on digital tablets to earn credits toward a high school diploma, or even a Bachelor’s degree. Staff is also looking at implementing apprenticeship programs to start inmates in trades like electrical or horticulture. In addition to reduced sentences, inmates can also gain “perks” for good behavior such as using tablets for movies or other entertainment. The current jail offers some education and counseling, but not a modern tablet-based program or significant space for classes, Bradley explained. The expansion is geared more toward “rehabilitation than incarceration.”
“The main idea is to reduce recidivism,” Bradley said. “If we can give people marketable job skills or critical thinking abilities, they will be better equipped to help themselves.” Botelho added, “Society needs to invest more in these programs to break the cycle of crime. Some of the programs that (are) being worked on by many of the county departments and (the City of ) Hollister would help some folks that we find in our jail.” The current jail will continue to house inmates after the expansion is complete, but portions of the building will be “repurposed” for other jail functions such as probation and monitoring services, work furlough programs and administrative functions. The county’s jail transition team will continue to work on those details as the completion of the expansion approaches over the next year.

DANCING REFLECTIONS San Benito High School students in Heather Nichols’ dance class are reflected in the mirrored walls of the
giant new studio in the new Visual and Performing Arts & Academic Building, which opened for classes this winter.
New arts building offers choices ➝ Dance, 1
to get out of the co-ed program. “I teach a lot of cultural dances to promote diversity and bring that cultural awareness.” While the energy emanates from the dance studio throughout the school day and even after with access for several dance teams coached by Nichols, the VAPAA building is as diverse as Nichols’ musical selections. The structure includes fine arts and ceramics classes on the ground floor as well as seven academic classrooms on the second floor. The Measure U-funded facility, the latest in an array of upgrades to the sprawling campus, also has student and staff restrooms, a parking lot, three work yards and a teacher workroom/lounge. “The vision for our new
VAPAA Building was to provide our students with modernized and upgraded classroom and art studio facilities,” said SBHS Principal Adrain Ramirez. “With a robust offering and enrollment of Visual and Performing Arts courses, we had outgrown our old facilities.” Previously, dance students made due with a makeshift studio of two portable trailers put together on campus. Nicholls said the major upgrade shows “that (district leadership) values the arts and providing a wellrounded education for students and giving them opportunities to choose their interests.” Ramirez explained that the VAPAA building, which just opened for classes in the winter, serves multiple purposes
by expanding the arts and also allowing “us to replace aging classrooms and an opportunity to design learning spaces that have the flexibility to meet the needs of all students.” Included in the new classrooms, similar to what has been added to the new Career Technical Education building, are “flow desks,” which allow students to either work individually in the traditional way or move their desks in sort of an interlocking pattern to encourage group work. The rooms also include “whiteboard paint” on the walls to allow teachers to be at different areas of the classroom, and television monitors on opposite sides of the room to prevent the classroom from just being a teacher standing in the
same spot in front of students. As with all classes, they are equipped with Chromebook carts. “This is a community investment that has created excitement for both students and staff, as well as a sense of obligation to do everything we can to ensure that our educational services match the quality of our new facilities,” Ramirez added. The excitement in Nichols’ studio, which includes a Marley dance floor, is contagious among the students who were all smiles throughout the April 13 class session. Even with five years of dance under her belt, Lara was immediately impressed with the SBHS dance program, which she is participating in for the first time in her high school career. “I come from a hip hop

I hope that they gain confidence and understanding of who they are and (use dance as) an emotional release. I hope they can take all their new skills and confidence and apply them to other areas of their lives. —SBHS DANCE INSTRUCTOR HEATHER NICHOLS

AIR TIME Lauren Sabbatini, a San Benito High senior, recently made a verbal commitment to play at Fresno State University. Sabbatini had four outstanding seasons for the Balers, earning Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division Most Valuable Player honors last season. PREP VOLLEYBALL
Sabbatini takes flight SAN BENITO HIGH SENIOR COMMITS TO FRESNO STATE emanuel lee Sports Editor
After the 2017 high school season ended, Lauren Sabbatini was on the fence in regards to playing another season of club volleyball. Having received no scholarship offers, the San Benito High senior figured she wasn’t good enough to play at the Division I level—at least not out of high school. However, Sabbatini decided at the last minute to play another season for Vision, the
high-profile club based in the South Bay. That decision turned out to be golden. When Vision’s 18-and-under gold team played at a national club tournament in Colorado in February, Fresno State coach Jonathan Winder saw Sabbatini play. Sabbatini had sent out a previous email to some of the coaches who were scheduled to be in attendance. It was apparent Winder liked what he saw, as he offered Sabbatini a scholarship when she took an unofficial visit to the Fresno State campus on April 5. Sabbatini said she’ll sign her official letter of intent sometime between now and mid May. “When they first offered, I was stoked a big school was looking at me,” Sabbatini said.
“I had a lot of doubt in myself not thinking I was good enough for that level of play. But I won’t doubt myself again. I know I just have to keep working hard, and good things will happen.” The 5-foot-11 Sabbatini played outside hitter in high school, and she’ll play the position at Fresno State—at least initially. Sabbatini expects to transition into a back row player, as her passing skills are excellent and her serve-receive improving with each passing year. “I’m perfectly fine with playing either position,” she said. “I love them both and just want to prove myself at the next level. I think they were looking to be a solid defensive passing team, and I think I can really help with that. Their blocking was the best
in the conference, so that will be great for me to practice against.” Sabbatini spent two days with the Fresno State players, developing a strong rapport and instant connection. That made Sabbatini’s decision easy; however, when it came time to actually make the verbal commitment, Sabbatini relayed one of the better parts of her stay in Fresno. Equal parts humorous and poignant, Sabbatini and her parents headed back to the car after Fresno State offered on the unofficial visit. “I was really nervous in the moment and just had to think about it,” she said. “We got to the car and I started freaking out because my mom made cookies for all my teammates. So we took those back to the office
and when all the coaches came out in the hallway, I made the decision there to commit. I was overwhelmed with butterflies and almost too nervous to say anything. Moments later, I was really happy in the moment. But it was a funny way to commit.” A fun fact: Sabbatini already had pegged Fresno State as one of the places to spend the next four years of her life, having already received an acceptance confirmation from the school. It was only in the Colorado Crossroads Tournament in February where Sabbatini’s talent shined on a national stage, and with it, an ensuing scholarship and dream realized. “It was crazy how this all happened,” Sabbatini said. “In the end, it was all worth it.”

Menez makes spot start for Sacramento emanuel lee Sports Editor
Submitted
PROGRESS Connor Menez made a spot start on April 12 for the Sacramento Rivercats, the Giants’ Triple A affiliate.
Connor Menez was a member of the Sacramento Rivercats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants—for one day, but it was an experience he’ll use for the future. The San Benito High graduate and Hollister native takes things one step a time, an approach that has worked well ever since he was selected by the Giants in the 14th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Menez made his Triple-A debut last Thursday, allowing three runs over four innings to take the loss. After a rough first inning, Menez settled down nicely and even
contributed offensively, driving in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second inning to make it 3-3 (the Rivercats fell to the Reno Aces, 5-4). Hours later, Menez was reassigned back to San Jose, the Giants’ HighA ball affiliate. Menez’s spot start in Sacramento capped off a crazy week, as the announcement of his call-up to Sacramento came out of left field. The 22-year-old received a call from Mike Mombrea—who is the director of employee assistant program—at around 1:30 p.m. last Wednesday. “I received this anonymous number from San Francisco, and thought
to myself, ‘Well, I better answer it,’” Menez said. “Mike said, ‘Hey, you’re going to Triple-A. They didn’t say when; they just told me they would send me all the information later. I don’t think my (San Jose Giants) manager knew yet. Once I got to the field, the manager called me in and said, ‘Congrats, you’re going to Triple-A. I hope I don’t see you again.’ I didn’t get much information other than that. It was pretty cool.” Menez’s Triple-A debut was his second start of the season, with the first coming with San Jose. In his season debut, Menez allowed just three hits and struck out seven over
five dominating innings. Menez said he doesn’t expect to receive a call-up to the majors this season; however, he knows what will get him there. “My mindset is making sure all of my pitches are working and I get ahead of batters,” he said. “Just doing really what I’ve been doing my whole life. I’ve got to accept my role.” Menez doesn’t overpower batters with a high 90 mph fastball; rather, the 6-foot3, 195-pound left-hander throws a 90-92 mph fastball with a darting changeup and wicked slider. Menez’s ability to change speeds, locate his pitches and effectively think through situations has gotten him this far.

Balers aim for Pacific Division title SAN BENITO HIGH LED BY BRENNAN VENTURA AND SAUL MARTINEZ, WHO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS ON AND OFF THE COURT emanuel lee Sports Editor
ALL-AROUND PRODUCTION Balers senior Saul Martinez (3) and Brennan Ventura (5) have been some of the key players in leading the team to a 6-1 record in the Monterey Bay League’s Pacific Division. San Benito plays Watsonville on Thursday.
Robert Eliason
since he started playing seven years ago. This season has been one of Martinez’s most enjoyable of his career, as he is playing a new position. Martinez played setter the last three years, but at the end of last season he talked with coach David Ventura about making a position change. Although the switch has been a big adjustment—Martinez plays setter/libero for his club, Main Beach Volleyball out of Santa Cruz—it’s turned out to be great for him and the team. “It’s always fun when you get to hit,” he said. “This was a first for me because the opposite literally does the opposite of what the setter does. The biggest adjustment is getting positioned properly on the court.” David Ventura, who credited the coaching staff of Adrian Masoni, Gabe Ventura and Jesse Esqueda as being instrumental in the team’s development and success, said when Martinez and Brennan Ventura are in rhythm, the team usually is, too. “Chris and Saul are our two best passers,” David Ventura said. “When we have a three-pass, we’re almost unstoppable—it is rare we don’t get point. Brennan can dump pretty consistently, which gives us an extra offensive piece in the front row.” In addition to being solid volleyball players, Martinez and Ventura have excelled in the classroom as well. Ventura has a GPA hovering above 4.1—this coming off a sophomore year in which his GPA was 4.3.
Robert Eliason
After going through the first half of the league season undefeated, the San Benito High boys volleyball team put itself in prime position to win an outright Monterey Bay League Pacific Division championship. That path got a little tougher after the Haybalers suffered their first loss in division play to Monte Vista Christian last Thursday. Despite the four-game loss, San Benito still likes it chances of winning the title. It won’t be easy, of course, and the Balers know they’ll have to dig deep and stay mentally tough to accomplish their goal. Junior setter Brennan Ventura and senior outside hitter/opposite Saul Martinez are two of the half-dozen players who have made a big impact this season. Both were key in the Balers’ thrilling fiveset victory over Seaside on April 10. Martinez had a teamhigh 11 kills, while Ventura finished with 22 assists, 18 service points and three service aces, all of which came at the beginning of the critical second set when the Balers were coming off an uninspired first game. Ventura won eight straight points on his serve as San Benito cruised to an easy Game 2 win. The Balers trailed 9-6 in Game 5 before going on
a match-closing 9-3 run to seal the outcome. It was a crucial victory considering Seaside also came into the match undefeated in division action. “To come back and win was just amazing,” Ventura said. “We were so excited to sweep the first half of the league season.” Ventura utilizes a jump, float serve to keep opposing teams off balance. Ventura’s serve has plenty of movement and drop to it, making for an effective offensive weapon. Ventura noted it takes a team effort to have a solid service attack. “The coaches tell us where to serve, and from playing the game you kind of know where the weaker passers are,” he said. “I try to serve a ball that has a lot of momentum and can drop really fast.” Ventura has become a more reliable setter, hitter and blocker this season as well, a byproduct of a productive club season with Central Coast Athletics out of Monterey. “My setting is more consistent, and I’m able to play my position a lot better,” he said. “My blocking has greatly improved; last year I only had one block and this year I’m in the top three on the team in blocks.” The 6-foot, 130-pound Ventura has made tremendous progress considering he only started playing volleyball in his freshman year. Ventura’s older brother, Gabe, a former Balers’ standout, has proved instrumental in Brennan’s development. The 5-10, 140-pound Martinez has also made steady improvement in his game
Martinez, who had a “perfect” GPA of 5.0 in the 2016-2017 school year, is currently ranked sixth in
the class of 2018 with a 4.4 GPA, and he’s taking five Advanced Placement classes. Martinez has been
accepted to Cal Berkeley, which has the toughest admission standards out of all the UCs .

OBITUARIES MOLLIE L. VASQUEZ
DAVID WESLEY FRITTS
M
ollie L. Vasquez passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on April 13, 2018. She was 92. Mollie Louise Vasquez was born in San Juan Bautista, California, the fifth child of Gregorio Palacio and Josepha Sanchez Palacio. Her mother passed away when she was nine years old and her father was tragically killed in an automobile accident when she was thirteen years old. Mollie and her sister Grace made a pact to keep the rest of the family intact after losing both of their parents — a pact they achieved through hard work and putting their own childhoods on hold. Their family was hit hard by Tuberculosis taking the lives of some of their younger siblings and requiring Grace to ultimately be hospitalized for years leaving Mollie to continue on her own.
1949 - March 16, 2018
D
Mollie was well known for her sewing skills, making clothing and costumes for her family, her incredible cooking, and her love of gardening. At family events she was known to get up and dance with her husband and sons. She had a way of making all her grandchildren and great grandchildren feel special. Mollie was a devout parishioner of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, in Morgan Hill, for many years. Perhaps most important, she had a deep faith in God and instilled that faith in her children. Mollie was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Vasquez in 2003 and her youngest son Steven Vasquez in 2009. It is hard to find a ray of light in any death, but she truly mourned the loss of her husband since his death and spoke about wanting to join him in her final days. The family takes comfort that she will be able to join him and her youngest son Steven. She is survived by her children, Mollie (Jerry) Gauthier, Richard (Lisa) Vasquez, Nancy (Mark) Bernal, Irene (Bill) Minderler, David (Janice) Vasquez, Lillian (Maurice) Ouellette, Barbara (Noel) Villanueva, and Steven’s widow Pierrette Vasquez. She also leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rosary will be held at 7pm Monday, Apr 23, 2018, at Lima-Campagna-Johnson Funeral Home in Morgan Hill 408.779.7990. Funeral Mass will be held at 10am Tuesday, Apr 24, 2018 at St. Catherine’s Parish. She will be laid to rest alongside of her husband Lawrence L. Vasquez at San Joaquin National Cemetery, in Santa Nella at 1:30pm that afternoon. Details about a reception to follow will be communicated during the mass. Arrangements are being handled by Lima-Campagna-Johnson Funeral Home in Morgan Hill 408.779.7990.

avid Wesley Fritts, 68, passed away on March 16, 2018, from the complications of sarcoidosis from exposure to Agent Orange. Born in the Midwest, his family moved to San Jose when he was a young child. After enlisting in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, he maintained the helicopters used in the search and rescue of downed pilots overseas. David received a commendation medal for meritorious service after a particularly grueling rescue mission. He built upon this early military avionics experience to have a long, successful career in Silicon Valley electronics, specializing in failure analysis. He moved to Morgan Hill approximately 30 years ago, since it reminded him of life in San Jose when he was growing up.
Despite not being able to complete his education after returning to civilian life, David was a big supporter of education for all, especially in the STEM fields. He enjoyed traveling, photography, and making poppy jasper jewelry for friends and family, eschewing any commercialization of his work. A “country boy” at heart, our beloved David was always the first to engage, comfort, and help others, even as his own health began to fail. He cheerfully volunteered with the Morgan Hill Historical Society, the Morgan Hill branch of the American Association for University Women, and the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association, never asking for nor accepting accolades for his work. Family and friends will miss his infectious smile, kind words, humble manner, and winning ways. In lieu of flowers, mourners desiring to do so may contribute to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, Silicon Valley. David was incredibly touched when he received his quilt last year, and spent many of his final hours at home prior to hospitalization wrapped in its comfort.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 1-800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.auction.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9948-3832. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
