California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has spoken. A referendum vote—pushed by Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velazquez— on the sale of a half-acre

empty lot at the city’s center would not be legal. “The City resolution is not subject to referendum,” Becerra concluded in an 11-page opinion released late on a Friday afternoon, April 27. It took Becerra nine months to release the opinion, which had been sought by Assemblymember Anna Caballero, an opponent of the public vote on the Hollister development.

“I was glad to see that the attorney general took that position.” she said in an interview last week. In contrast, the mayor said he was “extremely disappointed.” He said he would be consulting with a lawyer, and was not sure what next steps he would take—except that he would be talking about the issue in his reelection campaign in the fall. County, some local developers and business owners and Caballero had all lined up in opposition to a referendum that would have sought voter approval of the council’s decision last year. They are hoping that Becerra has the last word—that his longawaited opinion will end the dispute, and enable the project to begin on a plot of land that has been vacant since buildings

destroyed in the 1989 earthquake were cleared. In July 2017 Velazquez collected 2,465 signatures on a petition for a referendum, which Caballero, at the council’s request, immediately passed on to the attorney general for review. Becerra’s opinion, while not the same as a court ruling, effectively blocks any public vote on ➝ 400 Block,4

The public now has access to San Benito High School’s on-campus tennis courts outside of regular school hours. An agreement between the district and the city of Hollister means the courts will be accessible when school is not in session, specifically Monday through Friday from 6:308:30pm and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm. Reservations are required in advance by calling Hollister Recreation at (831) 636-4390. Last Friday Johnny’s Bar and Grill new owner Peter Lago was on the road to Gilroy to buy two new filing cabinets for his new bookkeeper. One of his cooks was in jail. His credit card machine was on the fritz, and the replacement was lost in the mail.

It was a week that many bar and restaurant owners can sympathize with, but the restaurateur from Hawaii should be used to challenges, and a little bit of trouble, after four months of finalizing the deal to buy the iconic mecca of bikerdom that’s Johnny’s Bar and Grill. On New Year's Eve, before the calendar flipped, former owner Cherisse Tyson held a formal key transfer ceremony at Johnny's, celebrating her end and

Lago's beginning as the bar's owner. The ceremony, as it turned out, was a bit premature, but after four months of negotiations and some sentimental severing of ties, Lago became the official owner of Johnny's Bar and Grill on April 1. “Initially the purchase price was $500,000, which at the time, I thought included the building,” Lago said. “It was a big part of the deal and a large assumption to make on my part. I assumed that it was all

included based on the condition of the bar. Eventually, we settled on $250,000 for the bar with $50,000 up front.” What would Johnny's Bar and Grill be without a little bit of trouble? For many of its patrons, those who ride and those who don't, the mystique of trouble is mixed with the fun and charm of Johnny's, and the mix of dive bar atmosphere, with cold beer, hot burgers and Bad Company on the jukebox keeps people coming back.

“It’s a dive bar full of history,” Lago said. “But there are mechanical aspects of the bar that needed to be repaired, like the plumbing and the refrigerators. The theme does not need to change much. We changed a few things around the bar, but I consider myself a custodian of history.” In many ways, Lago personifies the motorcyclist drive for freedom. Nearly four months after recreational marijuana sales became legal in California, voters in unincorporated San Benito County will vote June 5 whether to adopt Measure C, an ordinance to tax cannabis producers. Before the voters have the opportunity to test the merits of taxing the expansion of the cannabis industry into rural San Benito County, a burgeoning industry already ramping up in Hollister. In the fertile soils of San Benito County, cannabis could be a gold mine for local governments. Measure C will impose a tax on cannabis business in the county based on square footage of the operation, or, gross receipts. The rates will range from $3 - $17 per square feet for cannabis cultivators. Gross sales for distributors will range from .5 to 4 percent, for manufacturers 2.5 to 4 percent, for retailers .5 to 8 percent, and 2.5 to 5 percent on microbusinesses, a special licence that allows for every aspect of cannabis operation. The passage of Measure C will not legalize recreational cannabis sales, cultivation, and manufacturing in the county. Should the measure pass, the county

will have a tax structure in place before supervisors decide whether to approve sales or cultivation of recreational cannabis in rural San Benito County. As of today, there are no medical or recreational cannabis retail or culivation operations allowed in unincorporated San Benito County. San Benito County Sheriff's Department Sheriff Darren Thompson was asked by the county to estimate how much tax revenue could be generated and his department estimated that $3.3 million to $3.8 million from 25 to 30 acres of cannabis crops was possible, based on the lowest tax rate. The estimate was based on the previous cannabis grows that occurred in the county before a moratorium put an end to what was largely informal, ungovernable, or illegal production. “We are more interested in the manner in which the marijuana industry will operate, then in the manner in which they are taxed,” Sheriff Thompson said. “The 25-30 acre estimate is a prediction of potential grows sites, based on the amount of interest shown by the industry to date. It's not a scientific estimate, as there is no factual way to determine who or how many will ultimately choose to pursue that business in San Benito.”

Measure C proponent Victor Gomez, a former mayor, believes the county’s estimate is low, and that the tax per square foot for cultivators will be close to $7 per square foot. “If you can get $22,000 per acre or about $160,000 per we could bring in between $5 and up to $20 million a year,” Gomez said. Opponents of Measure C are not confident that the tax revenue will outweigh the adverse effects of expanding the cannabis industry in San Benito County. “That is an extremely difficult question and really part of the problem with not having a clear and defined regulatory structure in place which spells out what exactly the ordinance will allow and how they will be required to operate,” No on Measure C leader Steve Becerra said. In the City Hollister, several cannabis producers are licensed, and are required to pay an assortment of fees and taxes. Owners pay a $7,482 application fee, a $1,498 cannabis conditional use permit, $1,498 for a site and architectural review, a yearly $5,992 permit renewal fee, and 5 percent each of sales for manufacturing, testing, distribution and dispensing. None of the fees or taxes was voted on by the voters of Hollister. Recreational sales are not allowed in Hollister, which does allow sale of cannabis for mediciinal purposes.

The council approved the sale of the parcel last summer to the Community Foundation and the Del Curto Brothers Group, local developers, for $390,000. Documents obtained by the Dispatch last fall showed that an appraisal conducted several months earlier was $300,000 higher, but was never passed on the council by city staff. Velazquez said the change in the city’s redevelopment plan for the block from a public plaza to a high-density mixed

use office-housing-retail project deserves more public debate. Velazquez has been on the sidelines on the issue because the building and restaurant he owns, The Vault, sit immediately adjecent to the vacant land, and he could stand to gain by decisions made about the fate of that site. He has not participated in the negotations or decisions, to avoid even an appearance of conflict of interest. He said his opposition to the development plans is ironic, because he contends the value of his property and his business would probably increase if the plans were completed. The preliminary plan— unanimously approved, with the mayor abstaining, by the City Council, acting as a “successor agency” to its community development agency, in 2016— would construct two projects: a privately funded Philanthropic Center with a small public plaza, and multi-building commercial complex with retail and office on the first floor and residential condos on upper floors. Despite the delays, Byrne said there is no indication the Del Curto Brothers are changing their minds.

“an administrative” act, fulfilling a redevelopment plan that had already been in place. Strictly administrative actions are not subject to public referenda, he said. If Becerra had concluded that the council’s action was a “legislative” action, setting policy— which is Velazquez/ contention—then it would be subject to a public

referendum. The mayor contends that the development plan approved by the city in 2014 established the site as a public plaza, a community event space. He said the plan was later revised and proposals were sought that were tailored to the specific plans of the foundation and the local developers, who then were sold the land well below market value.

A dramatized telling of the Hollister Riot was later chiseled into American folklore in the 1953 film "The Wild One" where Marlon Brando's portrayal of Johnny Strabler helped turn the American biker into an oftmisunderstood cultural icon. “I had a comfortable condo in Maui, and like lots of guys, I had a man cave,” Lago said. “I had lots of stuff on the wall, including some framed photos of the events that happened in 1947 in Hollister.”

As a motorcyclist, Lago dreamed of landing his Harley 215 Street Caster in San Diego for a tour of the Western United States. He planned to hit stops all the way from the coast to the annual Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis South Dakota. Hollister happened to be one of the stops along the way. “I had a buddy hanging out one day, and he noticed the pictures; he asked if I had ever been out to Hollister,” Lago said. “He told me his sister owned the bar. He told me she needed some help doing security or the rally. I worked security for Cherisse in 2003, 2005, and several other times.

I’ve known the family for 15 years.” In 2015 Lago moved to Tiburon California, where he worked as postproduction for the documentary Mayan Revelations: Decoding Baktun. While in the state he came back to Hollister to record Tyson’s audiobook. Then in 2017, Tyson broached the idea of selling the bar to Lago. While Tyson initiated the negotiations when the time came to let go of Johnny's, it was hard for her to completely sever ties. “When she was ready to let go, she let go,” Lago said. “Before that, it was like fighting a horse.”

Measure C has hidden ingredients

400 block plan needs public reconsideration

alifornia Attorney General Xavier Becerra has intervened with a decision that will shape Hollister’s future— in an opinion that took him nine months to write: “The City (of Hollister)’s resolution (to sell ‘the 400 block’ on San Benito Street for a mixed-use commercial development)is not subject to referendum.” In other words, public opinion be damned. Political insiders—the majority of the City Council, the city manager, the Community Foundation for San Benito County, some local developers and business owners, and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero—all lined up in opposition to a referendum that would seek voter approval of the sale. They are hoping that Becerra has the last word—that his long-awaited opinion will end the dispute, and enable the project to begin. The leader of the July 2017 petition drive that had sought the referendum, Mayor Ignacio Velazquez, isn’t so sure. He said last week he is speaking with an attorney about the April 27 opinion, which while not the same as a court ruling, effectively blocks any public vote on the sale of prime downtown real estate. Velazquez believes his 2,465 signatures and the people they represent deserve to be heard, and we agree with him—if not in a public vote, then in some manner that forces the council to take a second look at its decision to sell a little less than a half-acre of lawn at Fourth and San Benito streets to the Community Foundation and the Del Curto Brothers Group, local developers. After all, the city did sell it for 77 percent less than an appraisal available at the time—and failed to disclose the appraisal. At minimum, the project should be re-bid at current market values, with a competition to achieve the highest and best use of the property. Velazquez believes—we go along with him on this—that the change in the city’s redevelopment plan for the block from a public

plaza to a commercial development deserves more public debate. The plan and the land deal also deserve an airing—in the spirit of transparency, a complete disclosure—of the communications and documents among city staff and council members leading up to the decisions about the project. Velazquez has been understandably out of that loop because the building and restaurant he owns, The Vault, sit immediately adjacent to the vacant land, and he could stand to gain by decisions made about the fate of that site. He has not participated in the negotiations or decisions, properly so, to avoid even an appearance of conflict of interest. His opposition to the development plans are ironic, because he contends the value of his property and his business would probably increase if the plans were completed. The preliminary plan—unanimously approved, with the mayor abstaining, by the City Council acting as a “successor agency” to its community development agency, in 2016— would construct two projects: a privately funded nonprofit office building with a small public plaza, and a multi-building commercial complex with retail and office on the first floor and residential condos on upper floors. Their plans are headed for multiple presentations before the council and the planning commission, as would any major commercial project. These should give additional opportunities for voices to be heard. But since so much time has passed, the City Council should reopen the process to give the public a chance to ask questions about this key piece of real estate and view the decision with a fresh perspective. It is, after all, much more than “an empty lot in the city’s downtown core,” as Caballero described it in a letter to Becerra last July. It lies at the city’s heart, and may hold a key to its future. It deserves a fresh look, a fresh conversation, to ensure a public consensus.

Measure C’s primary goal seems to be to trick voters in San Benito County into voting to overturn the county ban on commercial marijuana cultivation next to rural Homes and neighborhoods—without telling you that is what you would be voting for! Deceptive Measure C was submitted without a CON argument, but it should have told you that Measure C will have major negative Impacts on: Public Safety, Environment, Air Quality, Property Values, Water Supply, Neighborhood Safety and Quality of Life. It is being funded by out-of-the-area marijuana trade groups and growers. Measure C is a sneaky con that aims to pull the wool over the eyes of county residents, and it has a secret punchline: “You thought you were voting for a tax? Well you actually just voted to allow commercial marijuana farms next to your home.” It’s not funny. Measure C claims to provide funds for public safety, But the truth is that it will create massive threats to public safety! Don’t be fooled. Vote NO on Measure C! Last fall, a banwas passed that finally shut down commercial marijuana farms across the county. These grows were neighborhood nuisances, caused major public safety impacts and were associated with other criminal activity in the area. If Measure C passes, supervisors say that residents are fine with allowing commercial marijuana cultivation just 150 feet from their homes. Mark Medina is quoted in the Freelance as saying: “If we put this on the June ballot, we will have buy-in from our residents…” They are using this measure to get your buy-in to open back up the county to major commercial marijuana grows. Do we really want to go from being a lettuce bowl to being a stench-filled marijuana bowl? Is this what we want for San Benito County? In Greenfield, people are now being driven out of their homes they have been in for 20-plus years by the overwhelming stench from marijuana cultivation facilities with filtration systems similar to those proposed by our supervisors. Other counties have found that Big Marijuana doesn’t live up to its promises. The costs have far outpaced marijuana industry lobbyists’ promises of revenue, and the base tax rate proposed in Measure C is even lower than neighboring counties! There is an over-abundance of commercial marijuana already being produced in California and prices have tumbled over the past year, and now barely even cover their cost of production. How will this already oversaturated market benefit San Benito County? The Answer is: It won’t. From one neighbor to another, please: • Protect our property values and quality of life • Keep our community and neighborhoods safe • Keep our environment and air clean! Voting NO on C will not impact personal access to marijuana or Prop 64. This is strictly about banning commercial marijuana cultivation in the county, next to our homes.

Deadline looms for agriculture census The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service wants to remind farmers and ranchers that the window is closing on the opportunity to participate in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. The national return rate is currently lower than at this point in the 2012 Census, and we encourage U.S. producers who have not returned their completed Census questionnaires to do so as soon as possible. As the absolute deadline of July 31 draws nearer, we will turn to increased phone and in-person follow-up. “If you produced and sold $1,000 or more of agricultural product in 2017, or normally would have produced and sold that much, we need to hear from you,” said administrator Hubert Hamer. “If you’re a landowner who leases your land to a producer, we need to hear from you. If you received a census but do not fit this definition of a farm, please write your status on the form and send it back.”

The San Benito County Office of Education celebrated its 2017-18 Certificated and Classified Employees of the Year at an April 26 banquet at Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister. Along with honoring the teaching staff, the event also recognized the professionals “who provide valuable services to the schools and students and who strive for excellence in all areas relative to the educational community,” district staff said. Here is excerpts from the complimentary remarks made for each classified employee of the year:

Arturo Lara, R.O. Hardin Elementary School, Hollister School District Lara, a night custodian of 21 years, has been helping maintain R.O. Hardin since 1997. From his every day duties, to deep cleaning jobs, to making sure events happening in the evening run smoothly, Arturo is an exemplary staff member who is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Carmen Beijines, Rancho San Justo Middle School, Hollister School District Beijines, an office manager of 28 years, is a pivotal member of the staff. She Carmen provides Beijines calm and knowledge for students and staff, while always seeking new and better ways to serve both. Carmen has vast experience, ensures that the office runs smoothly and provides support whenever and wherever she can.

Carol Heiderich, San Benito High School District Heiderich, the administrative assistant to the superintendent who has 28 years with the district, was voted for this award for her unsurpassed commitment to SBHS. Last school year, as Human Resources Specialist II, Carol not only fulfilled the demands of her own position but also that of the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. She worked seven days a week and was often the first person on campus and the last to leave. She provides exemplary customer service with a positive attitude and a smile. She models the Baler Spirit in her dedication to San Benito High School District.

Cindy Brown, Hollister Dual Language Academy/ Gabilan Hills, Hollister School District Brown, a library media specialist with more than 30 years with the district, has been a constant in our school community for many years and has created a warm and happy library experience for every student. Cindy carefully stocks our library with relevant books and as HDLA has

grown, built up the library with Spanish and middle school selections. This year as two schools become one community, Cindy has the additional task of making sure that all of our 35 teachers have textbooks and materials that they need. She is digging deep into storage rooms to organize us and not blinked an eye as we add new classes each year. Cindy is flexible, caring, patient, and personable.

Enrique Zendejas, Ladd Lane School, Hollister School District Zendejas, school secretary of five years, is the definition of a team playEnrique er. As secZendejas retary, he welcomes students and parents, supports teachers and administrators and helps keep the office moving in a positive direction. Enrique is very organized and really cares about the student’s well-being at Ladd Lane School.

Esther Esqueda, Spring Grove School, North County Joint Union School District Esqueda, food service worker during school year and custodian over Esther the sumEsqueda mer for the last 16 years, has a heart for kids. She always wants to make sure that our students are fed and happy. Esther always says “Good morning” to everyone who comes by. In the summer, Esther is an amazing custodian. She is our detail person who helps to make our school sparkle each summer.

Jean Hinkel-Taluban, Hollister Dual Language Academy/ Gabilan Hills, Hollister School District Hinkel-Taluban, a school secretary with 11 years in district and first at school, has the kindest, most patient way with every single person she interacts with, and she truly is a joy to work with side by side. Jean seeks to learn at every opportunity, she is professional, organized, efficient and humble. Jean makes it a point to address every visitor with a smile, and to greet any challenges with a can do attitude that makes the busy office of a school of over 1,000 students and staff a wonderful place to be.

Jose Munoz, Sunnyslope School, Hollister School District Munoz, the lead custodian with 21 years in district and three at Sunnyslope, has a can-do attitude and knows his purpose at the school site: to support everyone at the school site and help our students reach their maximum potential. He is always willing to take on any job presented to him. He manages the needs of the teachers, students and

families. He keeps our campus clean and is always quick with a “Good Morning” to anyone who visits our campus.

Karen Whitney, Bitterwater-Tully School District Whitney, a TK-3rd grade instructional aide/ substitute teacher with sevKaren en years in Whitney district, is a model employee that is always on time with an easy smile on her face that brightens everyone’s day. No task is too big or too small for her. She has no trouble working with the children in a multi-grade classroom from holding the attention of my Pre-K and Kindergartners to reading with the advancing 3rd graders.

Kristine Rosales, Marguerite Maze Middle School, Hollister School District Rosales, an office manager of two years, is a team player. She is always willing to collaborate and get things done. She is a problem solver and always willing to take a risk by bringing up new ideas to the table. Kris is compassionate and caring about the students at Maze. You can count on Kris to comfort students who at times need a quiet moment to reduce their anxiety or relieve stress. She is respectful when speaking with parents, students, and colleagues at Maze.

Michelle Pasillas, San Andreas Continuation High School and Santa Ana Opportunity Schoole, San Benito County Office of Education Pasillas, who has been with district for 10 years, is the glue that holds many Michelle things toPasillas gether. Michelle is amazing at handling all aspects of running the front office. She is calm, direct and knows how to assist in every situation that she encounters. Michelle is kind, caring, strict and fair. She has wisdom that many coworkers can learn from, is a giving colleague, and has an impeccable work ethic.

Robert Beltran, Cerra Vista School, Hollister School District Beltran, the lead custodian of 28 years, is consistent in his attentiveness to staff and their needs. He picks up a radio call right away and always does a little extra for us. What we find most impressive is the relationships he builds with students and the high expectations he has for their character building and responsibility. Robert listens and takes the time to get to know students.

SBHS senior wins 2018 Congress art award HSD GIVES CLASSIFIED STAFF PAY RAISE Staff report

San Benito High School senior Jasmine Ulloa was named the winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition, as announced by Congressman Jimmy Panetta on May 2. Catherine Nordstrom, another SBHS senior, took second place in the competition and Baler student Tyler Oelrich was among the honorable mention winners. Ulloa’s pastel and charcoal winning entry, “Wary,” will be displayed in the United States Capitol Building. She and a family member have been invited to attend a special Congressional Art Competition ceremony in Washington, D.C. with other young artists from around the country at the end of June. Ulloa received an honorable mention in last year’s competition. “This competition showcased the

incredible creativity and talent of high school students throughout the central coast of California,” said Congressman Panetta. “I commend everyone who submitted their artwork, and thank their family members, teachers, and mentors for supporting these young artists.” The second place entry, “Joy,” by Nordstrom, will be displayed in Panetta’s Washington, D.C. office. That piece was created with gouache and watercolor. The competition’s honorable mentions were: •“Empire City” by Lily Russo of Aptos High School •“Personal Monument” by Bryanna Lynette Mendez of Salinas High School •“Bad Hombre y Princesa” by Saraijah Juarez of Harbor High School •“Good Kid, Bad City” by Tyler Oelrich of San Benito High School

HSD classified staff gets pay hike The Hollister School District’s Board of Trustees

unanimously ratified a revised contract with its classified—non-teaching— staff union that included a pair of 1 percent retroactive pay raises. All California School Employee Association workers will receive a 1 percent increase retroactive to July 1, 2017 and an additional 1 percent hike effective January 1, 2018. Total cost to the district is $150,000 in 201718 and $200,000 per year thereafter, according to the district’s April 24 agenda. The new contract runs through June 30.

Prom tickets for sale Prom tickets are now on sale in the Student Payment Center. Prom is from 7-11pm May 19 from at the Santa Cruz Cocoanut Grove. Tickets ($55 for singles, $100 for couples) include access to the arcade during the final two hours of Prom along with free appetizers and desserts. Students enjoy special Cinco de Mayo TWO SCHOOLS ORGANIZE FUN EVENT FOR SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAMS Scott Forstner Reporter

A third annual Cinco de Mayo fiesta of sorts for Morgan Hill and Gilroy students with special needs was hosted by teachers from both programs May 4 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. The celebratory event was a bit of a send-off for teacher Justin Barbettini, who is in his second and final year heading up the post-secondary program for adult students with special needs for Morgan Hill Unified School District. He was joined by teacher Mike Luke, who runs the moderate to severe disability program at Gilroy High School. “They have a great group of kids down there in Gilroy,” said Barbettini, who started his special education career as a paraprofessional/aide in Luke’s classroom. “At that time, I knew I wanted to be a teacher but the kids in that class are the reason I got into special education.” This year, 20 students (nine from Morgan Hill and 11 from Gilroy) gathered for a fun-filled day with some Cinco de Mayo flair, including Mexican trinkets Barbettini bought from La Placita gift shop in Gilroy, BBQ-d carne asada tacos and other

holiday fixins. Activities included music, piñatas and a water balloon fight. “It’s the kids that I really have memories with and connections with,” said Barbettini, who is moving to Maine and plans to continue his work in post-secondary special education. “My class has been great. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve made a lot of things happen.” Barbettini works with his students, who range in ages from 18-22 and are transferred in from Live Oak and Sobrato high schools, to build confidence, feed independence and further life skills. A major objective is to build a relationship with local businesses and organizations through the student’s on-site volunteerism with the hope of acquiring a parttime job. He has worked out partnerships with Rosy’s at the Beach, We Dog Care, GVA Cafe, Goodwill and the City of Morgan Hill. The students get compensated for their hours (up to 10 per month) through the Workability 1 program, which is funded by the State Department of Rehabilitation. They receive a salary of $10.50 per hour for their work. The post-secondary program does not get any additional funding from the school district and uses their paychecks to fund other class activities and excursions. “It’s all about just focusing on the kids and helping them out,” Barbettini said.

Near the end, I heard coach Bartylla saying, ‘Go Shaelynne, go. I knew I had to push it and finish. I went and saw the result and started crying. … Having my family here supporting me was also a really big deal and made a big difference.” Smith had plenty of reasons to be emotional. For most of the season, Smith’s times clocked in the mid-17 second range. However, Smith has gone sub 17 in her last three events, culminating in Friday’s 16.07. Junior Jonathan Ramos also had a meet to remember, going 21 feet, 7 inches to win the long jump championship. Ramos, whose previous PR was 19-11, established three PRs in Friday’s final. He was at 21-1 and in second place before unleashing the best jump of his career on his final attempt. Before the season started, Ramos’ goal was to make it past the MBL Trials, something he didn’t do last year. However, Ramos has made a dramatic improvement from last season, as he was in the mid-17 feet range. Asked to account for the difference in nailing multiple PRs in the same meet, Ramos chalked it up to the moment. “I didn’t want my season

Ellie Miller had just cleared 5 feet in the high jump when she screamed, ‘Did I just do that?’ The San Benito High freshman had a look of disbelief and amazement as teammate Annie Breger rushed over to give her a congratulatory hug after Miller won the event in last Friday’s Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division Finals at Gilroy High. Breger, by the way, had cleared 4-10 to finish as the runner-up, and yet she was just as happy for her precocious teammate even if it meant she didn’t win another individual league title. That moment encapsulated one of the great days in program history, as the Haybalers pulled off the rare double in which the boys and girls teams totaled the most points in the finals and in the regular season to cap off a perfect league season. “It’s been our goal to win the double for the last eight years,” Balers coach Rob Macias said. “That was what we’ve been aiming for all along.” Sprints and relays coach Ryan Shorey said the key was simple: while having talented and hard-working athletes proved important, it was the athletes’

unselfishness and willingness to push each other that proved decisive. “Everybody was working for each other,” Shorey said. “This has been one of the best years where the kids come out to practice and do what it takes to make sure they’re successful. When you have kids who want each other to do well and have great attitudes, what can you say? Victory is the sweetest thing when everyone comes together.” Indeed, several Balers produced spectacular performances, resulting in huge personal-records (PRs) and indelible moments they won’t soon forget. Senior Shaelynne Smith was still all glee and giggles an hour after winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.07 seconds, chopping 7/10ths of a second off her previous PR. Smith exploded off the blocks and led from the start, and she got stronger as the race went along. A couple of minutes after crossing the finish line, Smith was in a state of absolute bliss after she saw her time on the scoreboard ticker. “This was a huge thing for me; I’m just speechless,” she said. “Before every race I get super nervous, but I never know if it’s a good thing or bad thing.” Smith’s nerves Friday turned out to be a great thing. With her form on point, Smith looked smooth over all but one hurdle—I hit one in the middle of the race,” she said—en route to her firstever individual league title. Smith credited assistant

to end, so I had to jump farther,” he said. “I know I have to keep getting better and better every meet, so I go all out. It feels good because I didn’t expect to win this. I had to figure out what I was doing wrong and coach told me to extend in the air and reach out harder.” Ramos, who possesses tremendous speed on the runway, is only in his second year of long jumping. It’s apparent Ramos has the body type to excel in the event, and he certainly

knows how to rise up in the moment. In last year’s MBL Trials, Ramos went 18-1—the first time he had ever hit 18. Speaking of clutch performances, junior Anthony Delgado blazed his way to a PR and a school record in the 110 hurdles, clocking a 14.78 to win the title in runaway fashion. Delgado’s time was essentially a full second faster than Gilroy’s Logan Flores, who had the second fastest overall time of the day as he won the

Pacific Division title in 15.77. Making Delgado’s accomplishment all the more impressive is he sustained a groin injury in a dual meet against North Monterey County on March 15 and a hamstring injury against Alisal on April 18. Kramer deserves a lot of credit, as he took the position having never coached softball before. But he surrounded himself with experienced and knowledgeable softball coaches, and pretty much left the Xs and Os stuff to them. Kramer, meanwhile, took care of the overall management of the program—paperwork, travel arrangements, facility maintenance and all of the little things that need to be taken care of behind the scenes—making for a nice combination. “When we decided to make this happen, I told the AD (Athletic Director Ron Hannon) the only way we were going to get it done is if we found some really good softball assistant coaches. We did, and they were awesome.” Kramer was referring to softball assistant coaches Paige Miguel, Bobby Reggiani and Mari Rodriguez. Kramer also credited his assistant coaches on the beach volleyball team— Chris Spence, Ramon Rodriguez and Isaiah Acfalle—for being instrumental to the program’s success.

With the help of his assistant coaches, Kramer was able to juggle coaching two teams in the same season, almost unheard of at any level, especially in community college. But extenuating circumstances—the possibility of the softball program folding—required extraordinary measures. Simply put, Kramer did not want any of the student-athletes who came to Gavilan to play softball have something taken away through no fault of their own. “The biggest motivation in doing this was knowing the ladies on campus who came to Gavilan to play softball,” he said. “For us to not give them an opportunity would be heartbreaking. Softball is amazing in our area, and Gavilan once again needs to be a destination for the players who want to go the JC route. And I see no reason why it can’t be done. That was the motivation for me to come back.” Kramer did something few others in his position would’ve done three weeks ago—turn down a position to be an athletic director. But that’s exactly what happened when Kramer was offered the Mission College athletic director position. Kramer has always said he loves being immersed at Gavilan College, and he has gone above and beyond in showing it. Kramer said he doesn’t deserve any credit for helping sustain the softball program.

It was double duty for two Gavilan college athletes and one coach during the spring sports season. Kevin Kramer coached the Rams softball team and beach volleyball squad, and Lexi Chavarria and Kaitlyn Siaz played both sports. Safe to say, the last couple of months have been extremely busy for the trio. “It’s been hard on my body, but I feel like I’m handling it pretty well,” said Chavarria, a 2016 San Benito High graduate. “I definitely wouldn’t have succeeded if it wasn’t for Kevin because he really works with me and is flexible with the times I can come to practice. He also understands if I’m feeling sore one day, it’s OK to take a day off. Otherwise, my body probably wouldn’t have been able to get through an entire season.” It was a successful season for Gavilan’s beach volleyball and softball teams for a variety of reasons. The beach volleyball team recently concluded its season, but the two-woman tournament is ongoing. The Rams’ No. 1 team of Mikeila Banda and Haley Leifheit (San Benito) and No. 3 squad of Katia Dizon (Anzar) and Emily Jensen (formerly Kortsen, a former San Benito standout) advanced to the California

Community College State Tournament on Friday. The softball team recorded only five wins, but the most important victory was Gavilan fielding a team at all after the program was in danger of folding in the offseason after it couldn’t get a coach for several months following the 2017 season. Kramer, fellow coaches and the Gavilan athletics administration refused to let that happen.

She is survived by her two children, Kathleen Chavez (Jack) of Gilroy and son John E. Clark (fiancee Rose Mandel) of Davis CA, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. As per her request, there will be no services. Persons wishing to make a remembrance in her name may do so to Yosemite Institute or their favorite charity.
