San Benito grads toss caps today HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVERS HONORED AT A.M. CEREMONY Staff report HOLLISTER
➝ Commencement, 4
Bryce Stoepfel
After the June 8 commencement ceremony at San Benito High School, members of the Class of 2018 will go their separate ways to pursue college, career and service goals. This year, 657 SBHS graduates earned acceptance to nearly 150 colleges and trade schools throughout the U.S., as well as one in England, while others joined various military branches. In total, the Class of 2018 grads received 1,032 acceptances spread over 10 University of California campuses, 21 California State University schools, 14 private colleges throughout the state, 75 out-of-state colleges and universities, 21 California community colleges and seven trade schools, according to a report by the SBHS College and Career Center and the school’s counselors. The impressive numbers are a testament to San Benito High School’s mission statement, which calls for students to have “the greatest range of personal options upon graduation,” Vice Principal Claire Grissom said. “We have nine threeyear course CTE (Career Technical Education) pathways that lead to high-demand, high-wage jobs, as well as 21 different Advanced Placement courses offered at SBHS,” Grissom said. “There is something for every single student at every level of learning that challenges them beyond their comfort zone.”
ON TO NOVEMBER Robert Rivas speaks on stage in Hollister with his wife Christen Rivas and their daughter Melina after learning he had a solid lead in a five-person race Tuesday night in the race for the 30th Assembly District.
Rivas, Kitchens to face off SAN BENITO’S DEMOCRAT TO BATTLE GOP ROOKIE IN NOVEMBER By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Early returns from the four counties in the sprawling 30th Assembly district left no doubt about the front-runner, San Benito County Supervisor Robert Rivas. He will likely face first-time Republican candidate Neil Kitchens in a November runoff, as fellow Democrat and Gilroy City
Councilman Peter Leroe-Muñoz trailed late Tuesday. With 54 percent of partial returns from mostly rural precincts at 11:15pm, the California Secretary of State reported Rivas leading balloting with 44 percent, with Kitchens at 32 percent and Leroe-Muñoz at just 11 percent. “I’m elated, and I’m grateful to the voters of Assembly District 30,” Rivas said election night. “I’m ready to continue in November, to talk about the issues important to the voters in this district and California.” The Rivas campaign, accompanied by mariachi music, food, drinks and a generally festive
mood, exuded confidence in the early results. With the Democratic vote split, Kitchens, a national delegate for the Republican National Committee, emerged as the likely foe for Rivas on the runoff ballot. Kitchens has listed his jobs as a professional forester, rancher, lawyer, criminologist, real estate investor and residential property manager. District 30 includes San Benito County and parts of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, including the cities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister, with about a half million residents. The district is currently represented by Anna Caballero, who
is running for state senate in the 12th District. Leroe-Muñoz, is a former San Benito County deputy district attorney who works in San Jose for the tech industry’s Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and ran on a public safety and economic development platform. Two-term Supervisor Rivas was a leader in the successful antifracking measure in San Benito County who ran a primary campaign emphasizing diversity and his rural roots, which has been heavy on endorsements, including Caballero, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, and the political arms of the state teachers, nurses and public employee unions.
Voters OK pot and hotel taxes SHERIFF WINS REELECTION EASILY AS SUPERVISORS HEAD TO RUNOFF By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
San Benito voters approved Measure C on Tuesday, with 58 percent in favor of setting up a tax structure for future expansion of the county’s budding cannabis business into unincorporated San Benito County.
With citizens of Hollister and San Juan Bautista excluded from the vote, the county voters passed not only a tax plan but also gave their tacit approval for the approval of recreational cannabis manufacturing and growth. The San Benito County Board of Supervisors, who had the legislative power to approve the measure, instead put it to the voters, making the vote on taxes a referendum on whether the county’s unincorporated citizens desired the expand the cannabis industry.
Measure B passed with 52 percent, raising the transient occupancy tax, a tax on hotel rooms, from 8 percent to 12 percent within the county's unincorporated area. The increased revenue is expected to go towards law enforcement, fire services, economic development, roads, and other government functions. The race for County Supervisor Fourth District will be between Jim Gillio and Jerry Muenzer, who pulled 44 percent and 22 percent of the vote respectively. Rob Bernosky
polled 15 percent, Sandy Swint got 11 percent, and Elia Salinas earned 6 percent of the vote. In the race for the County Supervisor seat in the Third District, Patricia Loe and Peter Hernandez will face off in November. Loe came in first with 46 percent, while Hernandez pulled 31 percent. Richard Perez Sr came in third, with 22 percent. The county incumbent Sheriff/Coroner, Darren Thompson cruised to victory, defeating his challenger, Bill Hutchinson, with 70 percent of votes.
In the race for Treasurer/Tax Collector Public Administrator, Melinda Casillas soundly defeated Jaime De La Cruz, with 71 percent of the vote, compared to Cruz's 29 percent. The race for Superior Court Judge was a nailbiter. Gregory Michael Laforge came in first with 28 percent, but the race for second, between Jose "Omar" Rodriguez, came down to a few dozen votes, with Rodriguez capturing 1597 votes to Henderson's 1559, with 100 percent of the vote in.

End of May is payday for cattle ranchers WORLDWIDE DEMAND FOR BEEF KEEPS RANCHES IN BUSINESS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Bryce Stoepfel
From San Jose south down U.S. 101, most folks who live in the valley have little idea what happens in the hills that surround them. The rolling hills are full of life, though, and the cattle industry practiced since the Spanish Vaqueros still thrives. Mostly unseen, the work done on surrounding cattle ranches shows up on our dinner plates and through the veins of the regional agricultural economy—33,500 head of cattle in San Benito County and 13,300 head in Santa Clara County, according to the 2016 USDA Agricultural Census. One of those ranchers is Justin Fields, president of the Santa Clara County Cattleman’s Association, who works alongside his wife, Arleah Fields, and daughters Jenna,17, a senior at Sobrato High School who’s heading to Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall, and Jodi,13, to ranch almost 500 head of cattle. Fields is tall, with blue eyes and a neat pushbroom mustache, and he’s a real-life cowboy, with the chaps, spurs, rodeo belts and family heritage to prove it. Still, when he comes to town to pick up his daughter from school, people often can’t understand what he does.
“They are so removed from the land, they don’t know where their food comes from,” Fields, 46, said. “They don’t realize that their food is actually being produced here.” The Fields’ ranch is one of the few remaining family-owned cattle ranches in Santa Clara County. The Fields own 700 acres of prime grassland in the rolling hills of Coyote Valley, just south of San Jose. To accommodate almost 500 head of cattle, they lease an additional 7,000 acres, much of it on public lands administered by the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority. “In this area, there aren’t many family-owned ranches,” Fields said. “It’s rare that a rancher owns enough property where they don’t need to lease more acreage to run their cows.” The end of May is the culmination of a year’s worth of work, and last Friday was the final sendoff for 32 cows and 14 calves—Herefords and Angus—which Fields loaded into the back of a semi-trailer to be sent to auction. He had some help. With fellow rancher Pierre Paquelier, and Arleah on horseback, they led the cattle through a chute. As the team loaded the cattle, mother cows bellowed for recently weaned and now separated calves. “They’re still looking for their calves; they’re agitated, mooing and bawling,” Fields said. “It’s kind of sad, but it happens every year. That’s the annual cycle.” It’s an annual
BALER PRIDE Rancher Justin Fields rides with his cattle, driving them onto summer pastures. process that ranchers have repeated, in differing ways, since the Spanish Rancheros established land grants in the 1700s. At the Fields Ranch, the end of May is payday. This year the rate is about $1.55 a pound, or about $1,007 a head at the video auction. Of course, when your payday comes once a year, you need to be able to budget well. “I brought in our check to the bank, and while I waited the bank manager came out to ask us about investing our money,” Arleah Fields said. “When I told him that was our paycheck for the year, he was like ‘Oh, wow.’ ” The video market has modernized the old school auction. Via a satellite link, faraway buyers bid for whole truckloads of preloaded cattle by video. The prospective buyers are given necessary information like
weight, breeds and vaccination background to bid on truckloads of cattle weighing close to 50,000 pounds. “You need to budget everything,” Fields said. “The biggest expense is leasing land, which can range from $10 to $20 per acre, or by a per head per month basis which is between $15 to $20 depending on which agency you deal with. When you pay for a mother cow, you are paying for the calf as well.” On average it takes 10 acres of property to support a cow for one year, depending on the land. Aside from the calving season in the fall, cattle can take care of themselves while out on the ranch. Still, the Fields ride their land looking for potential trouble, like a sick cow, or they check on water and fences. They also work to
rotate grazing land, especially during the winter and spring when the grass is still growing. In this case, the cows act as lawn mowers. The market for beef is bullish. In January, Bloomberg reported that in 2018 the average American is expected to eat 222.2 pounds of red meat and poultry, and that domestic beef production will exceed 100 billion pounds. In the international market, U.S. beef producers exported over $7 billion in beef products, with Japan as the largest consumer at $1.9 billion. The Chinese marketplace, which had been cut off since 2003, was reopened in last year after the U.S.-China Comprehensive Economic Dialogue in June. Among the challenges of running a cattle ranch, the weather is always a big
one. While the Fields have a few water wells operated by solar-powered pumps, most of the water they use is spring water. However, during the worst parts of the drought that ended in the winter of 2016, water from the City of San Jose proved invaluable. The Fields Ranch is the definition of a family-owned and -operated outfit. Justin, Arleah, their two daughters, nine horses and a team of cattle dogs make the operation work. There is also a strong sense of community among ranchers, where a handshake is still bonding. On June 1, fellow rancher Paquelier was there to help, and Fields will return the favor in kind. When the margins are so razor thin, the community helps family farms survive.

High school district makes honor roll FALL ATHLETES REGISTER FOR TEAM TRYOUTS AT SAN BENITO Staff report
said Greg Jones, ERP and CBEE board chairman. “These honor roll schools and districts are improving student achievement and we have the data to prove it. It’s critical that the business community support and promote educational success, as today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce.” James Lanich, Ph.D., the president and CEO of ERP, said these “brightspot schools and districts,” such as San Benito, “are implementing programs and practices that are improving educational equity and accelerating student success. We need to shine a spotlight on their work and encourage others to replicate it.” To access the ERP Honor Roll, visit edresults.org and search “Honor Roll Dashboard” under the “Research & Data Tools” tab.

San Benito High School District is one of 24 public school districts in California to be named to the 2017-18 Educational Results Partnership Honor Roll for its high achievement and student success, according to a June 4 announcement. The program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Educational Excellence, is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes. “We are proud to be recognized as an ERP Honor Roll School District by educational and business leaders in California,” said SBHS District Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum. “Our teachers and administrators are committed to reaching higher levels of academic achievement and continuously improving our practices. We are pleased to see our hard work and dedication translating to positive outcomes for all our students.” San Benito High School is one of 1,798 public schools in the state to be recognized on the honor roll, which is the only school recognition
program in California to use student achievement outcomes as its criteria, according to the release. A letter to parents from Tennenbaum and Principal Adrian Ramirez notes that schools receiving the honor roll designation “have demonstrated consistent, high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.” The administrators noted that the district did not apply for the award. “Our results led them to us,” Tennenbaum and Ramirez pointed out in the letter announcing the honor. SBHS District will be featured on the ERP Honor Roll website, and a banner has been designed to hang at the school, according to district staff. The Educational Results Partnership is a nonprofit organization that applies data science to improve student outcomes and career readiness. It maintains the nation’s largest database on student achievement and utilizes this data to identify higher-performing schools and districts. For districts with high schools, such as San Benito, the honor roll recognition also includes measures of college readiness. “Educational success must be data-informed,”

CA universities accept Baler seniors ➝ Commencement, 1
The CSU system was a favorite of this year’s Baler seniors, with the class receiving 493 acceptance letters from the system, with the most coming from Chico State (64), CSU Monterey Bay (52), Sonoma State (45), San Jose State and Sacramento State (44 each), and Fresno State (42). From the University of California system, Irvine (24) and Davis (23) accepted the most SBHS students, with Santa Barbara, San Diego and Santa Cruz not far behind. Baler
seniors also received 10 acceptances to UCLA and four to UC Berkeley. The list of California private schools to which the SBHS Class of 2018 was accepted includes USC, Azusa Pacific, Santa Clara, USF, St. Mary’s and University of the Pacific, among others. With a strong technical education pathway available to SBHS students, admittances also came from the Culinary Institute of America, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, the International Culinary
Center, Universal Technical Institute, the Institute of Business and Technology, Pacific College and the Northwest Lineman College. The 75 out-of-state colleges and universities to which students were accepted spanned the map from coast to coast, and include prestigious schools such as Columbia, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NYU, Johns Hopkins University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Hofstra. One student also earned acceptance
to the University of East London. “With the guidance and support from an outstanding faculty and classified support staff, SBHS students continue to set the bar high as they embark on their journey beyond high school,” Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum said. “Our school district could not be more proud of our seniors and all they have accomplished throughout their four years. We wish them much success in their future endeavors and wherever life takes them, they will always be Balers.”

High rollers were primary investors
H
ere’s a sampling of a few of the players who spent big to influence your vote—the self-funders, the billionaire advocates, the unions and the corporations: Angelo Tsakopoulos, a Sacramento developer and longtime donor to Democratic candidates, dug deep to help his daughter, Eleni Kounalakis, in her bid to become California’s next lieutenant governor. He’s the largest donor to an independent committee working to elect Kounalakis, giving almost $5 million as of May 30. His largesse has become a source of criticism from her Democratic opponents. One of them, Jeff Bleich, said that the millions of dollars from “one commercial developer in your family, that’s going to affect how you operate on the (State Lands Commission) with respect to questions involving housing development.” Kounalakis did not directly respond, but criticized a Republican opponent, Cole Harris, for funding his own campaign with at least $2.2 million. “I hope everybody up here agrees we need campaign finance reform,” she said in reference to Harris’ self-funding. Yet Kounalakis has written her own campaign checks totaling almost $4.2 million. John Cox, the wealthy San Diego-area businessman and Republican candidate for governor, was the latest in a string of GOP candidates to run for California’s highest office using their own fortunes. It did the trick for movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003, but hasn’t worked since. “The history of self-funders
in this state is not good,” Cox acknowledged in an interview with CALmatters. But he said he jump-started his campaign funding in hopes “that the people of this state will respond because they want to see a positive change.” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings donated more than $13 million to Democrats Antonio Villaraigosa for governor and Marshall Tuck for state schools superintendent, as well as to various legislative races. Once a math teacher, Hastings has never given up his interest in schools. For more than 20 years, he’s pushed changes to public education, served on the state education board and helped craft a 1998 deal allowing more charter schools in California. Because charters are public schools exempted from many of the rules governing traditional schools and mostly hire non-union teachers, he’s often at odds with the state’s teachers union. Hastings gave $7 million to an independent committee backing Antonio Villaraigosa for governor, making him the group’s largest donor. He has also given about $3.4 million to a committee run by the charter schools association, which is spending heavily in legislative and school board races, and donated $14,600 to Tuck’s campaign. Other wealthy charter supporters emerging as prime California campaign donors include members of the Walton family, heirs to the Walmart fortune, together donating more than $6 million; businessman Bill Bloomfield at more than $5.5 million, venture capitalist Arthur Rock at nearly $5

million, developer Eli Broad at more than $6 million and investor William E. Oberndorf at $3.5 million. The California Teachers Association has spent about $5.2 million supporting Democrats Gavin Newsom for governor, Tony Thurmond for state schools superintendent, and various legislative races. Teachers have long enjoyed enormous political clout in California. But confronting a well-funded push for charter schools, they are locked in a battle over how California educates roughly 6 million students. Unionized teachers generally call for more funding for preschools and support programs; charter advocates say kids would learn more if schools could change some union rules about how teachers are hired and fired. Chevron donated about $4.2 million to the California Republican Party and various legislative races. The California-based oil company, with a huge stake in the decisions that come out of Sacramento, routinely lobbies on air pollution, climate change and offshore drilling bills, and was a key player in last year’s negotiations about extending California’s capand-trade program. Other oil companies are donating to the same committees. In the primary election cycle, Valero spent more than $2.2 million, Phillips 66 spent more than $2 million and Tesoro spent $1.1 million. Laurel Rosenhall and Matt Levin are reporters with CALmatters.

Authorities cautioned that using butane to extract THC from marijuana plants is “an extremely dangerous process,” with a high likelihood of explosions. Hollister Police officers also took the arrests as an opportunity to remind residents that even though possession of a certain amount of marijuana products is legal in California, the extraction of THC in a residential area, using butane, remains illegal. Anyone with information about this case can contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip hotline at (800) 78-CRIME. Eight suspects were making marijuana extract oil and were in possession of firearms at a Hollister residence while a 3-year-old child was inside the home, according to police. Police arrested all eight suspects during a May 26 raid on the Hawkins Street home, on suspicion of a variety of offenses related to gun possession, drugs, manufacturing of drugs and child endangerment. Just after 11pm May 26, police responded to the home at 29 Hawkins Street in relation to a report of a suspect holding a handgun and being involved in a previous shooting, according to a May 30 press release from Hollister Police Department. Officers responded to the same residence May 21, on a report that someone fired a handgun into the air. The May 21 visit did not result in any arrests or evidence of a crime, as no one was visible at the property. In response to the May 29 report, Hollister Police officers and San Benito County Sheriff ’s deputies approached the residence and saw several people drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in the open garage, police said. The officers identified themselves, and several suspects—including one
holding a firearm—ran from the garage into the home. Police chased the suspects into the home. Some of the suspects attempted to prevent officers from entering, according to police. The officers were able to enter the home, where they confronted several uncooperative suspects—including two who were hiding in a closet, according to the press release. Police located a number of handguns and a 3-year-old child inside the home during the initial search, according to authorities. Officers then obtained a search warrant at the home. The search revealed evidence of a “butane honey oil” laboratory, two handguns, methamphetamine, concentrated cannabis, prescription pills and other items “commonly used when selling drugs,” police said. Hollister Police called the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, whose agents responded to the scene to disable the THC extraction lab. The following individuals were arrested in relation to the illegal activity found at the residence, according to police: Juan Manual Vasquez, Jr., 43, on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance, child endangerment, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, felon in possession of a firearm, possessing a large capacity magazine, possession of a controlled substance

Gilroy Rodeo to return in August BEFORE GARLIC, THERE WERE COWBOYS AND THE RODEO Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Bryce Stoepfel
In the hills that surround Gilroy, the west is still wild. Cowboys still ride and rope, same as they did back in the day of Henry Miller's reign as the "Cattle King of California." This summer, a reminder of the Santa Clara Valley's past and present will descend on Gilroy Aug. 11-12. The Gilroy Rodeo is back after a 62-year hiatus. “I asked my wife, Kendra, ‘Why isn’t there a rodeo in town?’” Rodeo Director Erik Martin said. “She said, ‘Because all the other wives said no.’ Well, she said yes.” What started as a conversation between husband and wife turned into almost two years of planning and work. The Gilroy Rodeo is a nonprofit event, designed to be family-friendly, with the ultimate goal of donating revenue to local organizations such as 4-H that help preserve the county's western heritage. The new home will be on a 62-acre ranch on Ferguson Road, a former dairy farm owned by Bill Furtado, Martin's grandfather-in-law. There, the Gilroy Rodeo is building a 150-by-310-foot arena, large enough to seat more than 6,300 people. “We’re proud to host this event on our family ranch,” Martin, 43, said.
There’s a lot more than cowboys and steers that goes into organizing a rodeo, and wrangling with county regulations has proved to be as formidable as a charging bull. “It’s been a headache,” Martin said. “You need to jump through a lot of hoops in the world we live in. And most ranchers don’t like to do that.” Thankfully, Martin has a stable of 60 enthusiastic volunteers. On May 24 they met at the Old City Hall in Gilroy to crown the Rodeo's grand marshall and the 2018 Miss Gilroy Rodeo. In a place that values its agricultural heritage, Gilroy has not had a rodeo since the Gymkhana shut down in 1956. The site of the old Gymkhana is now home of South Valley Middle School. The 2018 Gilroy Rodeo will be the only rodeo in Santa Clara County. While nearby rodeos such as the massive California Rodeo in Salinas and the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo are going strong, the Gilroy Rodeo will give local riders a chance to shine in the arena. “This is a hometown rodeo,” Martin said. “The difference between the California Rodeo and us is that they are a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo and we’re going with the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association. It’s kind of like a farm league. They have insurance, and anyone can sign up for it with a one-day

permit. The sign-ups open two to four weeks before the rodeo.” It will be an actionpacked August weekend for the Gilroy Rodeo. Aside from the rodeo competition, there'll be a dance, a cowboy church, music and a full-on display of what cowboy life is all about. “We’re going to do things that simulate what you do on a ranch,” Martin
said. “You’ll see what working cowboys do.” Martin, the owner of a construction company, grew up on his family’s ranch outside of Escondido. As Escondido grew, the ranch was eventually swallowed up by urban sprawl. He now hopes to pass along his family’s ranching tradition to his son Maverick, daughter Cora-Lee and one more
child on the way. Gilroy High alumnus Jade Katen-Ynzunza, a marketing and biology major at Northern Arizona University was crowned the 2018 rodeo queen, and her grandmother Joyce Vieira was named the grand marshall. “I’ve been a rodeo queen before, so I know it’s quite a responsibility,” Katen-Ynzunza, 21, said.

“You need to be the face of the rodeo, you talk with the news, and you need to be a role model for kids.” Vieira, who owns and operates a ranch on Day Road, still rides high in the saddle and, at age 77, ropes and rides with visitors to her ranch. Being rodeo royalty is not new for her: In 1959 she was queen of the San Jose Firefighters Rodeo.

Ag faces challenges in age of tech LABOR SHORTAGE, SOIL CONDITIONS NEED SOLUTIONS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Bryce Stoepfel
While most Americans drift further and further from their agricultural past, the business of farming is still booming. But it is changing—and technology is a big part of that. At a May 22 public panel discussion, California Secretary of Food and Agriculture Karen Ross said, “How we manage our land is critical to how we mitigate climate change, and how we can work the soil to keep it fertile for fruit, vegetables and grapes while keeping up a $2 billion industry. “We have a severe problem that
is not being addressed by policy,” Ross said. “We are trying to catch up on what can be automated, and we need to do that soon.” The shortage of labor has hit farmers hard who depend on hand harvesters, who often pick fragile crops year-round. Automation could serve as a solution, and it may not be as far away as it may seem. “There has been a tremendous evolution in robotics,” said former state ag secretary A.G. Kawamura. “Automated tractors are just around the corner, and recently I was just at an automated dairy.” Ross and Kawamura were in Morgan Hill as featured speakers at an event hosted by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, “Disruption on the Farm.”
STATE OF AGRICULTURE California Secretary of Food and Agriculture Karen Ross, along with Dennis
Donohue and former California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary A.G. Kawamura were in Morgan Hill last Tuesday to discuss the future of the state’s agriculture industry.

FLASH JACK Jack Breger, a soon-to-be San Benito High graduate, ran the 100-meter dash in 10.75 seconds to win the St. Francis Invitational on March 17. In the process, Breger established a new school record. He’s headed to Sacramento State University on an athletic scholarship. TRACK AND FIELD
Fastest Haybaler JACK BREGER HEADED TO SACRAMENTO STATE TO RUN AND JUMP AT HIGH LEVEL Sports Editor
When Jack Breger competed in the St. Francis Invitational on March 17, the soon-to-be San Benito High graduate had no idea how much his performance that day would alter his future. Against many of the Central Coast Section’s best sprinters, Breger pulled away from the field to win the 100-meter dash in a personal-record 10.75 seconds— a time that stood up as the section’s fastest of the season. It was a magnificent performance that showcased Breger’s supreme talent and eventually led to Breger receiving a scholarship to compete in track and field at Sacramento State University. Because Breger has only completed 1-½ years of track and field—he played volleyball as a freshman and sophomore and had his senior track season cut short due to injury—there’s no telling how fast or far Breger can go. The scary thing is, Breger has only scratched the surface of his enormous athletic potential. “The (Sacramento State) jumps coach said I have a body type similar to one of their jumpers who was a senior this year,
a great start out of the blocks— “My start was actually terrible,” he said—but with about 40 meters remaining, Breger literally hit another gear and pulled away from runner-up finisher Nikolas Trofort, who finished in 10.89. Trofort, incidentally, went on to win the 100 and 200 in the CCS Championships. Since Breger was unable to see his time right away, he had no idea of how fast he had just gone.
Utter disbelief
“I walked over to the practice field to get my clothes and I remember another kid who was in the race from LA who said, ‘Oh, you’re the guy who won and ran 10.75, right?’ I’m like, ‘What? That just can’t be right,” Breger said. “And sure enough 10 minutes later the announcer calls my name with the winning time of 10.75, and I kind of just stood there in shock. (Twin sister) Annie was warming up for her jumps competition and ran over and gave me a big hug. That was a special moment for sure.” It was only the third—and what turned out to be his last— 100 meter race of the season. “The first 100 I ran was hand timed, so there was no actual time,” he said. “The second one was on our home dirt track, so you’re not going to get your best time. This was basically the only 100 time I had on paper. It was a little bit of luck that I ran such a good time because I ended up getting hurt and needed that time for colleges to recognize me.” Breger took a proactive approach and contacted Sacramento State and several other

and he jumped 25-4 (in the long jump) this season,” Breger said. “Coach said I have the body type and running form to do exactly what needs to be done at the college level to go along with potential. That is super exciting to hear because he produces a lot of great long jumpers and triple jumpers.” That’s right: Breger isn’t just a speed demon; in fact, the long and triple jump could end up being his best events in college. Or it could be the 100. Or the 200. Breger has PRs of 22.81 seconds in the 200 and 22 feet, 7 inches in the long jump. Even though Breger never competed in the triple jump in his injuryshortened senior season, he did post a mark of 39-2 ½ in his first-ever competition in March of his junior year. Had Breger not gotten injured this season—he suffered a hamstring tear about a third of the way into the season—he most likely would’ve been the odds-on favorite to win the 100 in the CCS Championships. The disappointment of not being able to finish out the season was softened by the fact that it didn’t cost Breger an opportunity to run for a Division I program. That was made possible by his blazing performance at the St. Francis Invitational, which Breger still looks back at now in wonderment. For one, conditions that day weren’t exactly conducive for a sprinter, as it was cold, damp and windy. However, Breger got in a great warm-up before heading to the starting line and his position in Lane Four. Breger didn’t have
ALL SMILES Jack Breger is flanked by his parents Beth and Sam and
sister Annie during his ceremonial letter of intent signing last week. colleges in August 2017. The Sacramento State coaches got back to him right away, and they stayed in touch all the way to the beginning of the high school track and field season. But things didn’t start heating up until Breger ran the 10.75. After taking a visit to Sacramento State, Breger knew it was the place for him. He ended up signing his letter of intent on April 20 before doing a ceremonial signing at the high school on May 31. Knowing things could get emotional during a ceremonial signing in which his friends, family members, coaches and teammates were going to be in attendance, Breger purposely prepared a short speech because “I didn’t want to be up there crying in front of everyone.” The high level athlete always prepares, and Breger was no doubt thinking ahead. “I figured it might get emotional because (athletic director) Tod (Thatcher) and coach (Ryan) Shorey said a few words
before Principal (Adrian) Ramirez—whom I had a close relationship before he was principal—said something,” he said. Breger can’t wait for his college career to begin. Since Breger is a relative newcomer to the sport, he knows there are still plenty of technical and mechanical things to improve, and his best performances are still ahead of him. Breger said he’s confident Sacramento State jumps coach Eric Fremd and sprints coach Kimberly Graham-Miller will help him maximize his potential. “Coach Fremd is a nationallyrecognized coach, so working with him is going to be awesome,” Breger said. “When I took my visit there, I loved everything about it. What stood out to me most was the team and family atmosphere environment. Even though track and field is an individual sport, what we do affects the team. It makes it more enjoyable to compete and better yourself when you’re a part of a team and everyone wants to see you do your best.”

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.
I, Mary Lou Andrade, San Benito County Tax Collector, State of California, certify as follows: That at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2018, by operation of law, any real property (unless previously tax-defaulted and not redeemed) that has any delinquent taxes, assessments, or other charges levied for the fiscal year 2017-2018, and/ or any delinquent supplemental taxes levied prior to fiscal year 2017-2018, shall be declared tax defaulted. That unless the tax defaulted property is completely redeemed through payment of all unpaid amounts, together with penalties and fees prescribed by law or an installment plan is initiated and maintained; the property will become tax-defaulted and may be sold subsequently at a tax sale to satisfy the tax lien. That a detailed list of all properties remaining tax-defaulted as of July 1, 2018, and not redeemed prior to being submitted for publication, shall be published on or before September 8, 2021. That information concerning redemption or the initiation of an installment plan for redemption of tax defaulted property will be furnished, upon request, by Mary Lou Andrade, San Benito County Tax Collector, 440 Fifth Street, Room 107, Hollister, CA 95023, (831) 636-4034. I certify (or declare), under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing is true and correct. /s/Mary Lou Andrade San Benito County Tax Collector, State of California NOTICE OF IMPENDING POWER TO SELL TAXDEFAULTED PROPERTY Pursuant to Revenue and Taxation Code sections 3691 and 3692.4, the following conditions will, by operation of law, subject real property to the tax collector’s power to sell: All property for which property taxes and assessments have been in default for five or more years. All nonresidential commercial property for which property taxes and assessments have been in default for three or more years. Any property the tax collector has received a request to bring the property to the next scheduled tax sale from a person or entity that has a nuisance abatement lien recorded against the property and for which property taxes and assessments have been in default for three or more years. Any property that has been identified and requested for purchase by a city, county, city and county, or nonprofit organization to serve the public benefit by providing housing or services directly related to low-income persons and for which property taxes and assessments have been in default for three or more years. Note: The power to sell schedule for nonresidential commercial property is three or more years of tax default status, unless the county adopts, by ordinance or resolution, the five-year tax default schedule. The parcels listed herein meet one or more of the conditions listed above and thus, will become subject to the tax collector’s power to sell on July 1, 2018, at 12:01 a.m., by operation of law. The tax collector’s power to sell will arise unless the property is either redeemed or made subject to an installment plan of redemption initiated as provided by law prior to close of business on the last business day in June. The right to an installment plan terminates on the last business day in June, and after that date the entire balance due must be paid in full to prevent sale of the property at a tax sale. The right of redemption survives the property becoming subject to the power to sell, but it terminates at close of business on the last business day prior to the date of the tax sale by the tax collector. All information concerning redemption or the initiation of an installment plan of redemption will be furnished, upon request, by Mary Lou Andrade, San Benito County Tax Collector, 440 Fifth Street, Room 107, Hollister, CA 95023, (831) 636-4034. D
onald R. Casillas, Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 2, 2018. He was 91. Don was born in Madrone, CA on May 24, 1927, to Christobal and Margarita (Saldivia) Casillas. He was the eighth of nine sons.
He was born during the Great Depression Era. The family lived a simple life and worked hard in the fields and orchards of Madrone and Morgan Hill. His father and brothers taught him how to live off the land through fishing and hunting. In their past times they loved to ride the bulls and broncs in the Madrone Rodeo. Don married his forever sweetheart, Helen Marez on June 3, 1950 in Santa Clara. The couple raised five kids off of Live Oak Avenue. He provided for his family by driving tractor for various ranches in Morgan Hill until he became a mason, to which he stayed with the craft until retirement. But most of all he loved his family and friends. He was kind and funny. He loved family barbecues, holiday tamale making, casino excursions and catching up with his old buddies from the ranch days. He could fix anything and would teach you how to as well. When he bid you goodbye he’d tell you, “call if you need anything”, and he meant it. Don was preceded in death by his wife Helen Mary (Marez) Casillas in 2005. He was the last surviving sibling of the Butron/Casillas brothers. Don is survived by his children, Margaret Yardley, Carol Nuñez, Don Casillas, Jr., Monica Casillas, and Sandy Hernandez (Victor). He had fourteen grandchildren, nineteen greatgrandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Also, survived by many nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 beginning at 2:00pm with the Vigil Service starting at 4:00pm at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy, CA. Graveside Service will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gilroy, CA. The family would prefer Donations to the Kidney or the Diabetes Foundations.
