County work follows pot vote CONSULTANT WOULD BE FIRST STEP TO ALLOWING CANNABIS CULTIVATION By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Robert Eliason
Now that voters have approved Measure C, the San Benito County Board of Supervisors will soon decide whether to allow commercial cannabis manufacturing or cultivation in the unincorporated county. On July 24 the supervisors will hear a proposal from HDL Companies, a Diamond City, Calif. political consulting firm, to help guide the county toward writing an ordinance that would officially open the door for commercial cannabis manufacturing and cultivation in unincorporated San Benito County. On June 5, about 58 percent of voters in unincorporated San Benito County approved Measure C, which passed a tax structure that would collect revenue from recreational cannabis manufacturing or cultivation. “We just had a meeting with them,” San Benito County Supervisor Anthony Botelho said June 29, referring to HDL Companies. “After the board decides to contract with a consultant, they are going to survey the interest for cannabis in the county, and this way we can do a financial analysis over fees and taxes.” The plan imposed by the passage of Measure

Lowriders, hot rods and rat rods lined the streets of downtown San Juan Bautista Saturday, June 30, for the 11th annual car show with the Los Padrinos Car and Truck Club. The club’s president,
Ralph Duarte, who took over after his father Pete Duarte passed away two years ago, said they had many entries this year and drew perhaps 3,000 attendees from all over the region. “We had 120 entries this year,” said Duarte. “It went from low riders, hot rods, rat rods. We take in any car. We make the classes the day of the show, and we try to make it so everyone has a class that brings car out.”
The event included vendors selling purses, hats, shirts and auto detailing, as well as a taco truck and a fish-andchips booth. Duarte says the club wants people to patronize local businesses, and he’s grateful for its local sponsors. “Dona Esthers and Daisy’s are some of our main sponsors and have been helping us out since this beginning, maybe 11
years,” he said. “We actually got a sponsor that we are in discussion with and will be talking with the city about expanding the event.” Proceeds from the event benefit Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the VFW of San Juan Bautista, as well as other smaller charities. Duarte said Los Padrinos, which received its nonprofit status four years ago, works
throughout the year making contributions to the community, such as feeding the homeless and participating in other community events, including Gilroy’s Tamale Festival, which takes place Oct. 7. As the car club’s relationship with the community evolves, Duarte is excited to help realize his father’s dream. “Hopefully, it will be even better,” Duarte said.
Arizona water was source of lettuce E.coli CDC REPORT CONCLUDES THAT TAINTED YUMA WATER WAS FOUND IN ROMAINE CROP Staff report
The recent deadly outbreak of E. coli in romaine lettuce is officially over. Federal authorities say the romaine lettuce for sale in
grocery stores and restaurants is safe to eat. According to a June 28 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, samples taken from canal water that irrigated Yuma, Arizona growing fields were laced with deadly bacteria. “The E. coli O157:H7 found in the canal water is closely related genetically to the E. coli O157:H7 from ill people,” the CDC
reported in a final update on the outbreak. The romaine lettuce grown in Arizona was contaminated with a particularly virulent strain of E. coli that sickened 210 people in 36 states between March 13 and June 6. The age of victims ranged from 1 to 88. Ninety-six of the victims were sick enough to be hospitalized; 27 of those developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Five people from four states died.
It was the worst outbreak of the particular strain of E. coli since a 2006 outbreak linked to spinach. Using a special type of DNA fingerprinting called whole genome sequencing, the CDC was able to determine that the E. coli bacteria sampled from those who became ill was closely related genetically, so a single source of infection was the most likely cause. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration, along with the CDC and various state partners, then traced the outbreak back to a single growing region in Yuma, Arizona. Yuma grows 90 percent of all the leafy greens America eats between the months of November and March. Most lettuce consumed the rest of the year is grown in California, including San Benito County. The last shipments of lettuce from Arizona shipped in April.

and help accommodate the growing population as existing schools near capacity. The other three items, regarding the same property, approved by the board June 26 were: •$75,000 contract with Earth Systems Pacific to “perform all observations, monitoring, testing (if needed) and prepare all required documents and reports on behalf of the District” at the request of the State Department of Toxic Substances and Control; •Another $132,296 contract also with Earth Systems Pacific for Site Investigation Work Plan, a Removal Action Plan and Removal Action Completion Report “for construction of the new school at Santana Ranch”; and •$185,000 contract with EMC Planning Group for required biological surveys, observations and monitoring prior to, during and after construction.

Hollister School District’s Board of Trustees have approved four contracts totaling nearly $42 million for the development of a 12-acre site for a new primary school. At the June 26 meeting, the board voted unanimously on all four items, the largest being a $41.5 million design-build contract with Otto Construction for the Santa Ranch School Project. Staff recommended the approval of Otto Construction because the proposal “offered the district the best value.” Trustee Robert Bernosky made the motion. which was seconded by Trustee Elsa Rodriguez and supported by board colleagues Peter Hernandez, Elizabeth Martinez and Patricia Moore.
“As requested, Otto Construction, Inc. submitted DSA pre-approved, re-use building plans and construction methods that will expedite the DSA approval process, construction, and opening of the new school by January 2021,” according to the staff report. The project, which will be funded through Measure V and Measure M bond monies, includes 33 standard classrooms, three Science/ Art/STEAM classrooms, library and administration office. The design features two-story buildings with elevator access to accommodate ADA requirements, playground structures and turf/athletic fields. The 12-acre land is located on the corner of Sunnyslope Road and Fairview Road in the Santana Ranch development. The district plans call for a transitional kindergarten through eighth grade school site to service more than 900 students

Regional composting firm grows SOUTH VALLEY ORGANICS EXPANDS OFF PACHECHO HWY Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Bryce Stoepfel
When it comes to garbage, recyclables or yard waste, once the bins hit the curb, that’s it. Goodbye to bad rubbish. There’s life after trash, however. Plastic can be turned into anything from winter coats to playground equipment. Recycled aluminum may become cars, bikes, or airplane parts. Yard clippings and food waste can be used to create resellable compost. Recology, through its company South Valley Organics, runs a composting operation outside of Gilroy about a quarter-mile off Pacheco Pass Highway. Almost every weekday, trucks haul in 150 tons of organics to South Valley Organics’ 16-acre site. After the trucks pass over scales that weigh the organics, the material is dumped into piles, which then go through mechanical grinders. The groundup material is then made into windrows, mounds about 7 feet high and 100 feet long. There, in the windrows, microscopic gourmets devour the harmful bacteria. These “gourmets” are microorganisms that include bacteria and fungi which, through a natural process, break down the material with the help of oxygen and water. In a way, the organisms are
cooking the compost, and the natural heat, which reaches 130 degrees F, can be seen via escaping gasses and is hot to the touch. Next to South Valley Organic’s composting center lie the remains of an old landfill, which contains generations of trash from Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The landfill was closed in 2008 and is now covered with grass. The landscape is dotted with methane exhaust pipes that burn away gas that emanates from the remaining refuse, part of a statemandated plan to monitor the former landfill for 30 years after its closure. The material comes from Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Pacifica, Cupertino, Mountain View, San Bruno and soon, Hollister. There are 10 employees at South Valley Organics, who work from 7am to 3:30pm. Before the compost is ready to be sold, South Valley Organics sends samples to a Watsonville laboratory where the lab tests the compost for metals and contaminants. South Valley Organics sells its compost wholesale. One of its most significant clients is Lyngso, which then sells the compost to big-box garden stores. The compost is sold by the cubic yard at market price. South Valley Organics would not disclose how much per pound they charge for their compost. The compost is turned over with loaders to keep it moist. The longer the piles sit, the hotter they get,

which is vital to the composting process. South Valley Organics sprays the compost with water collected in a 4 million-gallon pond downhill from the compost yard. The water is funneled down through pipes and pumped back up for storage in five 10,000-gallon tanks. While scent is in the
nose of the beholder, the compost yard at South Valley Organics smells faintly like pine and lawn clippings. The site is also popular with wildlife, particularly crows that poke around the compost searching for seeds. Mountain lions, wild pigs, coyotes and deer visit the site on a regular basis.
The material comes from Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Pacifica, Cupertino, Mountain View, San Bruno and soon, Hollister.

CA budget has ‘rainy day’ fund
T
he governor just signed a $200 billion budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year, which continues the recent years of economic stability for the state. The spending plan invests in public education and higher education, fixes for our roads and highways, helps to address childhood deep poverty, and continues to add reserves to the state’s rainy day fund. Education remains one of the state’s top spending priorities. The budget includes the highest level of school funding in history: $78.4 billion, a $31 billion increase from 201112, and a $3.6 billion increase to the Local Control Funding Formula, which helps public schools with the greatest needs. The budget continues to invest in higher education, apportioning $105 million in ongoing funds to the California State University and $120 million to increase system-wide enrollment by 3,000 students over four years. The University of California will receive $105 million in one-time funds to avoid a tuition increase, $5 million ongoing for small enrollment growth and $3.5 million for deferred maintenance. Repairing our roads and highways alleviates traffic and keeps Californians and our economy moving forward. By July 2018, we will have already invested $5 billion from SB1 transportation funds in roads and highways statewide, and the budget will continue this investment with more than $4.4 billion in SB1 revenues in the 2018-19 fiscal year. While the state continues to see economic growth after the great recession, deep poverty and homelessness remain a stark reality in
every community in California. The budget provides $500 million in grants to cities to address homelessness and also increases funding by $360 million for CalWORKs to support those individuals most in need.
Repairing roads and highways keeps Californians and the economy moving forward. By July 2018, we will have already invested $5 billion in roads and highways statewide, and the new budget will continue this investment While the Legislature made all of these investments, we are extremely cognizant that good fiscal times cannot last forever. The budget continues to put money into the Rainy Day Fund to protect the future fiscal health of our state. The 2018-19 state budget represents a statement on the priorities for California in the next year and will guarantee that residents have access to services and programs necessary to meet everyday needs. Sen. Monning (D) represents the California Senate’s Seventh District.

The murder of five employees of the Annapolis Capital Gazette has elicited an outpouring of grief and horror that such an attack could take place here in the United States. The shooting represents the single deadliest attack on the U.S. media in recent history, according to the research carried out by the Committee to Protect Journalists. The U.S. is now the third deadliest country for journalists in 2018, behind only Afghanistan, where 10 journalists have been killed because of their work, and Syria, where the number is five. Before last week, 16 U.S. journalists had been killed since 1972 in attacks related to their work. These murders highlight another important reality, which has been true in the U.S. and around the world: Local journalists are especially vulnerable to violence and are often targeted from within the communities they cover. This may have to do with the intimacy of the relationship. The journalists and their subjects often know each other, and the coverage may be felt more personally because it is seen by friends and neighbors. Beyond murder, data on violence against journalists in the United States is difficult to come by. That is why last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists along with Freedom of the Press Foundation and a number of other press freedom groups created a new online database called the Press Freedom Tracker. In the last 18 months, the Tracker has documented 57 physical attacks on journalists in this country. These range from journalists being shoved by security guards to being beaten by protesters. In one notorious incident, Montana Republican congressional candidate Greg Gianforte assaulted Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs. Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges, is now a member of Congress. The suspect in the Capital Gazette attack, Jarrod Ramos, had a long-running legal feud with the newspaper and had made recent threats against it. Anne Arundel County Police Deputy Chief William Krampf described the incident as “a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette.” The ability of journalists to carry out their vital work depends not just on the legal framework that protects press freedom. It also depends on the support from their own communities and the political leaders and law enforcement who stand with them when they are threatened with or victims of violence. While we like to think we are largely immune to the cycle of violent reprisal that characterizes the work of the media in so many parts of the world, the murders at the Capital Gazette serve as a terrible reminder that the right to free expression is both precious and vulnerable. This tragedy should be a reminder to our leaders and everyone else that we must all come together to defend the basic values of tolerance at the heart of the First Amendment, the right to express our views and to speak the truth without having to fear for our lives. Joel Simon is the executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

general—(and) they have told me they’re trained and they’re aware of reporting requirements,” said Trustee David Gerard. “I’m confident the district would monitor this; it’s a huge priority.” Trustee Donna Ruebusch said she knows from personal experience as a former teacher for MHUSD that staff are fully versed in the “policies, practices and ongoing training” for mandatory reporters. Trustee Gino Borgioli confirmed that board members are informed about annual training and mandatory reporting procedures. “Knowing what I know, I feel all staff is up to date on the mandatory reporter process, especially since the Loyd case,” Borgioli said. Borgioli was referring to John Loyd, who was convicted of sexually assaulting four female students in his fifth-grade Paradise Valley Elementary School classroom from 2012 to 2014. Attorney Robert Allard secured an $8.25 million settlement from MHUSD on behalf of three of the victims’ families in early 2017. The same firm is now preparing to sue MHUSD for negligence and failure to report suspicion of abuse, on behalf of three of Cole’s female teen accusers, according to Cerri, who practices with the Corsiglia, McMahon and Allard law firm. Two of these teens are also likely to sue South Valley Dance Arts, the private Morgan Hill company whose tutelage the girls were under when they say Cole touched or spoke to them inappropriately, Cerri added. The crime for which Cole was convicted in June occurred during a late 2017 production of “The Nutcracker,” produced by SVDA at Sobrato High School. The victim of that crime is not among the teens represented by Cerri and the Allard firm. “The district required (SVDA) to hire a backstage production person purportedly for safety purposes while using the district’s facility for the performance, and recommended Cole to (SVDA) despite actual and/or constructive knowledge that Cole had engaged in improper conduct toward minors while working for the district,” reads the claim filed by the Allard firm against MHUSD.
DEBIT
C will tax cannabis businesses in the county based on square footage of the operation, or, gross receipts. The rates will range from $3 – $17 per square feet for cannabis cultivators. Total sales for distributors will range from .5 to 4 percent, for manufacturers 2.5 to 4 percent, for retailers .5 to 8 percent, and 2.5 to 5 percent on microbusinesses, a special license that allows for every aspect of cannabis operation. San Benito County Sheriff Darren Thompson estimated, based on
prior cannabis operations in the county, to bring in $3.3 million to $3.8 million from 25 to 30 acres of cannabis crops was possible, based on the lowest tax rate of $3 per square feet. “The 25-30 acre estimate is a prediction of potential grows sites, based on the amount of interest shown by the industry to date," Sherif Thompson said in May. "It’s not a scientific estimate, as there is no factual way to determine who or how many will ultimately choose to pursue that business in San Benito.”
Former Hollister Mayor, and current President of Pinnacle Consulting, Victor Gomez estimated that the tax rate per square foot would probably be $7 per square feet, and the county could bring in between $5 million, and up to $20 million a year. “We are going to have a presentation on the July 24 meeting; it’s more of a high-level presentation,” Botelho said. “There would be no decision made at the meeting, other than to see if we will hire this firm or not.”

Fireworks sales fund holiday lights VOLUNTEERS WORK HOLIDAY WEEKEND TO SELL SAFE FIREWORKS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
The county’s most comprehensive site for news and information.
Bryce Stoepfel
The TNT fireworks stand on near the Safeway on Tres Pinos Road was staffed over the long holiday weekend entirely by employees of the Hollister Downtown Association, along with other volunteers. Like all the other fireworks stands in Hollister, fireworks sales are a vital source of fundraising for the non-profit. For the past 15 years, fireworks sales have provided essential funds for the annual Lights On Celebration in downtown Hollister. The parade, which kicks off of the Christmas season, brings in between 8,000 and 10,000 people, says Hollister Downtown Association Executive Director Jeana Arnold.
“Fireworks helps us put on the Lights On Celebration, and we may not be able to put in on without it,” Arnold said. On Friday, June 29, Hollister Councilmember Jim Gillio, a candidate for county supervisor in District 4, volunteered at the TNT stand on Tres Pinos Road. “All the money raised here goes to revitalizing our downtown,” Gillio said. “I’m happy to be here helping.” “We start to get busy Friday afternoons because people blow off their first fireworks, and then they’ll have to come back on Saturday and Sunday to get their next round,” volunteer Emily Stephens said. “Our best seller is the stackups, which does 12 different things with different colors. Some of them crackle, some do the Piccolo Pete things, some release these lava balls that burble out and creep along the ground.”
RED, WHITE AND BOOM Florinda Tamez, Emily Stephens, and Heather Hickerson, volunteered Friday afternoon at the TNT fireworks stand near the Safeway on Tres Pinos Road. They’re standing next to the most expensive item, the $500 Big Bang package.

Hollister man wins $750k in lottery CROSSWORD PICK BOUGHT AT BIG SAVER PAYS OFF Staff report
multiple times because he just couldn’t believe it,” his daughter added. “He won $5,000 in 2013, so he’s been playing for a while. He’s a regular, but he was just seeing if it was true that he finally won the big amount!” That he did: $750,000 before federal taxes. “It feels real now because I’m here (claiming my prize). Now I’ll just be waiting for the call to come pick up my check!” he said with a laugh. As for what he plans on doing with his newfound fortune, Alvarez hopes to put a down
payment on a small house to share with his wife of 26 years. “That’s a long time!” he added, referring to how long they’ve been married and dreaming of buying their own home. “I don’t think this (win) will change me as a person,” Alvarez added. “I like to play for fun and to help pass the time.” Miguel Alvarez agreed to share his story but declined any requests for media interviews or a photo. No additional information about him was released by the California Lottery.

Miguel Alvarez of Hollister bought some California Lottery Scratchers a few months ago and didn’t win any money. He did win a free ticket, which was nice. But that’s not what he was after. On his way home from work the following day, he stopped at the same store in Hollister (Big Saver at 203 Hawkins St.)
and bought one $10 Mystery Crossword game. “I wanted to give it one more try,” Alvarez said in Spanish as his daughter, Myra Alvarez, translated. His determination paid off. Alvarez matched all 10 words to win the game’s top prize of $750,000. “I went back inside the store to (scan it) because I couldn’t believe it,” Alvarez said in an interview with the California Lottery. “The owner of the store took a picture because she couldn’t believe it either!” “He felt goosebumps and actually checked it

HEADY STUFF Abraham Arevalo, a recent San Benito High graduate, dazzled at times on the pitch. The midfielder’s playmaking ability caught the eye of the Oklahoma Wesleyan University coaching staff, which discovered Arevalo through a recruiting website. SOCCER NEWS
Arevalo realizes dream RECENT SAN BENITO GRADUATE POISED TO MAKE A MARK AT COLLEGIATE LEVEL emanuel lee Sports Editor
As Abraham Arevalo was being dropped off at Tulsa Airport to catch a flight home, he received the best news possible from Oklahoma Wesleyan University men’s assistant soccer coach Stevan Djukic. “We want you to come back and we will offer you a scholarship,” said Djukic, who along with the rest of the coaching staff had evaluated Arevalo and several other recruits the day or two before during a tryout camp/scrimmage.
“When he told me that, it was an out of body experience,” Arevalo said. “I stood there and almost cried. I asked him if he was serious and he said yes. He looked at me and knew I was in shock, so he said to bring it in and gave me a hug. I managed to hold it together when he was there, but when I was sitting in the airport, a few tears came out when I called my mom and told my friends. I let all of my emotions out—I had to.” Arevalo has always been confident about his game; however, playing against bigger and stronger college players definitely humbled him for the better. “I flew out over spring break for the tryout, which was three hours,” said Arevalo, who earned
a spot on the all-Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division First Team this past season. “It was crazy—a bunch of talented players I had never played with before. They had some Serbians who were phenomenally good. I was in shock and thinking, ‘Dang, these guys really take it serious and don’t like to mess around.’ I knew this was an environment where I could learn and become a better player.” Arevalo’s decision to play soccer at Oklahoma Wesleyan represents a milestone moment on a number of different levels. For one, it was a dream come true, as Arevalo set a goal to play at a higher level ever since he started playing the game. More important, Arevalo is the
first one from his family who will attend college. His parents, Jose and Rocio, encouraged him to go the college route even when there was a time Arevalo wanted to work out of high school. “Wanting to be the first generation in my family to go to college motivated me to get my grades up,” he said. Arevalo joins a strong program that went 22-1-2 overall and 11-0-0 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference last year en route to a semifinal appearance in the NAIA Tournament. The college has an enrollment of 700—nearly five times smaller than the student body at San Benito High. Oklahoma Wesleyan is a nationally recognized Christian
university in Bartlesville, which is about a 45-minute drive from Tulsa. Although Arevalo knows he’s going to get homesick— going to Oklahoma over spring break was the first time he’s been out of state other than Mexico— he is preparing for the mental grind of playing college soccer and being sound academically. “It’s going to be really hard moving away from family because I’m used to being with them everyday,” he said. “Being homesick is something I’ll have to deal with.” The way Arevalo earned his way to play for a four-year school is a story unto itself. Go to sanbenito.com to view the full version of this story.

A National All Star team celebration
Nick Lovejoy
The Hollister National 9- and 10-year-old All Star team celebrates after a 7-6 win over Atlantic of Salinas last Sunday in a District 9 tournament elimination game. Kyian Rhodabarger doubled home Jacob Esparza with no out in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory. National plays crosstown rival Hollister American on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the championship round Saturday against Soledad. Soledad needs to be beaten twice to lose the title, as it is the only undefeated team left in the field. National manager Joe Vasquez said he’s looking forward to Thursday’s contest, noting the respect he had for American manager Daniel Barone and his coaching staff along with the fact that the coaches’ kids play together and against each other on travel ball programs. Esparza, Rhodabarger, Jonathan Barnes, Eli Lovejoy, Danny Rubalcava and Marcus Vasquez have powered National thus far.
STILL ALIVE Hollister National celebrates after Kyian Rhodabarger (3) doubled home Jacob Esparza with no out in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch a 7-6 win over Atlantic of Salinas Sunday.

OBITUARIES JOHN DIAZ
JENNIE C. SOLORIO
January 17, 1960 - June 8, 2018
January 27, 1930 - June 25, 2018
J
ohn passed away unexpectedly at Hazel Hawkins Hospital surrounded by his family. John was born and raised in Hollister. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and Truck driver for many years.
In 2008 he decided to study and be a Crane operator, which some had doubts if he could pass the test. If you knew John, you know he was persistent; and if you told him he couldn’t do something, by God he would be sure he did. He did pass that test and loved it. You could always find him tinkering in his shop, cutting fire wood or working in his yard. He was Uncle John to many even if he wasn’t your uncle. John was the guy you go to for help making something, borrowing something (if he could find it) or if you needed to talk he was always there. John had a huge heart and it was reserved for family, friends and his dog Shadie. He loved to make people laugh. He told me if he can make me laugh for the rest of my days, he has done his job. He was the best Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend you could ask for. This world has suffered a great loss; our memories and his inprint will last a lifetime. John is proceeded in death by his Mother Hermelinda Canela Diaz, Father Cipriano Diaz and Brother Rafael Canela. John is survived by his wife Vicki Taborski Diaz, Daughter Lisa Wiley of Madera and his three Grandchildren Micah Hernandez, Ronnie Wiley Jr. and Leilani Wiley of Tallahassee, Florida; his sisters Teresa Salcedo Barajas (Florencio) of Hollister, Dolores Salcedo of San Diego; brothers Mario Canela Flores (Maryann) of Hollister, Arturo Canela Flores of Senora and many nieces and nephews.

Sam is survived by his wife of 26 years, Verna; his two sons, Joseph and Ben and his three grandchildren, Annmarie, Samuel and Manuel. His smile, stories of his childhood and silly jokes will be missed and forever in our hearts.

MERRI JAYNE MURPHY (THOMAS) February 19, 1944 - June 18, 2018
J
ennie Solorio died in Hollister on June 25, 2018. She was surrounded by the family whom she loved, and who loved her.
M
Jennie was born in Encinitas, California to Ramona and Lucio Cota. Her parents worked in the fields, and shortly thereafter began traveling back and forth between Southern California and Hollister, where they eventually settled. Jennie’s earliest memories were of living with her family in the Cienega Valley, where she attended the Vineyard school. During this time she regularly explored the plants and animals surrounding her, developing a love of the natural world that remained with her throughout her life. Her family eventually settled permanently to Hollister, where her father made a living working in the Cienega vineyards. Several years later, Jennie met the love of her life, Henry Solorio, while watching a movie at the Granada theater. They were married on June 4, 1950, and were the proud parents of five children. Jennie and Henry emphasized the importance of education for their children: she later recalled doing as much of the housework as she could herself to free her children up to do their school work and engage in sports and extracurricular activities. She also read regularly in child development literature, and provided her children frequently with art supplies and books to engage them. All five of Henry and Jennie’s children eventually graduated from college. While raising her family, Jennie worked seasonally in the Hollister cannery. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, as her children reached high school and college age, Jennie began serious study of the Bible, and began attending an Englishspeaking base community group at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Base communities were part of the liberation theology movement that had begun in Latin America in the 1960s before they spread to the United States, and which emphasized smallgroup Bible study as a tool for education and community development. Jennie was convinced that this movement needed to be extended to Spanish speakers in Hollister, and shortly thereafter helped form a small-group comunidade de base (base community) at Sacred Heart. It was at her initiative, followed later by others’ efforts, that Sacred Heart later began offering worship in Spanish for the first time. As a result of her work in base communities, Jennie regularly began visiting farm-worker camps around Hollister, helping to bring food, clothing, and the love of God. She also began reading deeply in theology. Jennie became a self-taught scholar who loved to discuss theology with Catholic priests and others in the community. Her favorite theologian was Richard Rohr, who, in his writing and preaching, emphasized love, inclusion, and the connection of all things in the kingdom of God. Jennie continued her passion for social justice throughout her life. She was a founding member of Hollister in Black, a group modeled after the Women in Black in Chile, who protested the disappearance of family members by the Chilean dictatorship. During the duration of the second Iraq war, Jennie could be found every Friday with other members of Hollister in Black at the corner of 4th and San Benito protesting the war. Jennie’s life was characterized by her faith in God, by her compassion for others, and by her love for her family. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Henry, and five children: Conrad (Berta), Laura, Gil, Paula and Jenny (Todd). She was a loving grandmother of six: Enrique, Elias, Nancy, Ana (Max F.), Max Jr., and Jovita. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mickie Solorio Luna. Her parents and nine siblings preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Sacred Heart Church at 11am on Friday, July 6, 2018. A reception will follow the services at St. Francis Retreat in San Juan Bautista. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Fishes and Loaves, a group in Sacred Heart-Saint Benedict Catholic Church that Jennie was involved with for many years, and which helps those facing hunger. Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Condolences: sanderfhcares.com
