Medieval Faire returns By Debra Eskinazi Magazine and Features Editor

Nearly 10,000 people were transported to the past when the Northern California Renaissance Faire kicked off its six-weekend extravaganza on Saturday, Sept. 15. Visitors to Casa de Fruta, about 14 miles east of Gilroy and 12 miles north of Hollister on Highway 152, discovered medieval worldclass jousting tournaments, court jesters, buxom wenches wielding ales, fair maidens, men in kilts,

warriors, brave knights and fireeating performers. Frances Larose, director of marketing for the Northern California Renaissance Faire, said the hope is to grow the Faire even more and bring in more families. “That is why we have added a sixth weekend, Halloween Fantasy,” said Larose. “It is geared to local families and friends.” Renaissance Faire visitors were entertained with theatrical and musical performances on

six busy stages, a tournament of horses and even giant turkey legs in a royal food court. “Our knights are dashing and fearless,” said Larose. “They entertain audiences with a full contact joust, featuring shattering lances and riveting sword fighting.” With so many things to do, Larose recommended that visitors pick up a schedule at the front gate, plan out their day and even stop in the Belrose Costume

shop for some festival-appropriate attire. “Besides the games we have fire eating, with revelry, dancing, glass blowing and amazing artisans with hand crafted wear,” said Larose. Visit the Northern California Renaissance Faire weekends through Oct. 21. Visitors can receive a $5 discount for the second and third weekends when buying online at norcalrenfaire. com. Vet trades uniform for Gavilan pads VET’S PLANS AND DREAMS INCLUDE COLLEGE FOOTBALL Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

For soldiers in Army green, unless they're career military professionals, there's life after the military. There's life after football too.

Gavilan College twoway starter Branden Garcia is a seven-year Army veteran, and now that he’s out of the service, he’s working on his post-military dreams: an education and a shot at playing for a four-year football team. Garcia, 25 ended his stint in the US Army in August. Out of North Monterey High School, he had turned down offers to play college football to instead follow in

the footsteps of his older brother, Rey Garcia, who was a Marine. Branden Garcia went from the California National Guard to sign up with the Army, where he served as a military policeman with deployments from California to South Korea near the DMZ. “I always had a passion for sports,” Garcia said. “I had offers from the University of Laverne, and Menlo offered me. But I

wanted to follow in the footsteps of my brother. I was young.” On Aug. 6, two days after he arrived back in California, he was back on the field. Garcia was released from his current duties on Aug. 3 but he was still technically a soldier since his DD214 discharge papers passed on Aug. 15. The second he hit the field, Garcia became the oldest player on the Gavilan roster, having two

Catholic HS plans hinge on LAFCO PRELIMINARY SCHOOL PLAN CALLS FOR 1,600 STUDENT BODY, 100 FACULTY MEMBERS Scott Forstner Reporter

File Photo

While a city annexation plan is moving forward once again, the brainstorming behind a South County Catholic high school is already well under way and has been for a number of years. The Diocese of San Jose said fundraising, a construction timetable and overall project costs have been put on hold until the Local Agency Formation Commission rules on the City of Morgan Hill’s annexation request, by mid-December at the earliest. Proponents of a new Catholic high school southeast of Morgan Hill are keeping their fingers crossed that the county body will change course from previous denials and allow them to build the private school. “We did some preliminary fundraising before 2016 but decided to postpone our campaign until it is passed through LAFCO,” said Rev. Steve Kim of St. Lucy Parish in Campbell. Kim has been designated as the spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of San Jose and those trying to turn a concept into a reality for South County families. “Once it is approved

through LAFCO, we will immediately set a timeline and move forward with the campaign,” Kim added. Earlier cost estimates, now more than two years old, were around $30 million to build the high school. However, with rising construction costs in a competitive market due to several variables, such as the availability of matching state funds for public and charter schools, that figure could increase greatly by the time ground is broken. The proposed school site, more than 65 acres of land in the southeast quadrant of Morgan Hill, is bound by Tennant Avenue to the south, Murphy Avenue to the west, Barrett Avenue to the north and abuts an agricultural field to the east. The Morgan Hill City Council voted 3-2 on Sept. 5 to submit an application to annex the land to LAFCO. Although unable to provide specific figures on costs, Kim did detail preliminary school plans and ideologies gathered through feedback from stakeholders within South County. The school would start out with a freshman class and grow each year until reaching a full high school enrollment of up to 1,600 students in grades 9-12 with about 100 faculty members, according to Kim. The school, which if approved, will be called St. John XXIII College Preparatory, has a mission statement “to educate and cultivate ambassadors of faith, ethics and

SCHOOL SKETCH The fate of a proposal for this South County Catholic High School is headed to LAFCO for consideration. knowledge in service to humanity,” according to a proposed school profile being developed by the Diocese. Kim shared that organizers have surveyed and interviewed parents, students and stakeholders in Morgan HIll to see what they are looking for in a Catholic high school and will continue to do so as they finalize their plans. However, nothing is set is stone, Kim added. “With our core values of design thinking, learn by doing and strong values, we look forward to many projects that deal with partnering with local farmers and environmentalists to work on sustainability,” said Kim of a curriculum focus at the school.

“St. John XXIII College Preparatory will be established for the purpose of developing and creating students who are collaborative, resilient and creative problem solvers through the concept of design thinking,” as described by organizers. “The students can and will be shapers of knowledge through this teaching and learning curriculum.” The Diocese still has a long road ahead with the key hurdle being LAFCO approval to annex the land into city limits. In October 2015, the City Council submitted to LAFCO a series of landuse plans called the Southeast Quadrant for annexation into the city. The land for the proposed high

school was included in these plans. In March 2016 the committee denied the annexation request. A city is only allowed to submit plans to the committee once a year. With the decision coming a year later, the city submitted a request to annex only the land for the South County Catholic High School. The request was denied in June 2016. The 2018 annexation amendment would include nearly 65 acres of land on Murphy Avenue, between Barrett and Tennant avenues. The land is within the city’s urban growth boundary, but not within city limits. In order to receive city services such as fire, water and power, the land would need to be annexed.

Private schools within county

In Santa Clara County, there are 241 private schools, serving 50,695 students, according to privateschoolreview.com. About 40 percent of those schools are religiously affiliated, most commonly Roman Catholic and Christian. Bellarmine Prep, Archbishop Mitty, Valley Christian and St. Francis are among the most popular private high schools in the county. In Morgan Hill, there’s Oakwood School, Crossroads Christian and St. Catherine’s. In Gilroy, there’s Pacific West Christian Academy and Anchorpoint Christian School.

Eleven propositions will crowd ballots HOUSING, WATER AND HOSPITAL BONDS IN NOV. 6 VOTE Staff report

Housing Bond, Proposition 1

Authorizes the state to issue $4 billion in bonds for the construction of low-income housing. Homeless Bond, Proposition 2 In 2016, the legislature approved a $2 billion bond to fund new housing for homeless Californians, using money from a tax on millionaires.

New bonds authorize an additional $8.9 billion for drinking and waste water treatment, groundwater sustainability and conservation programs.

Children's Hospital Bond, Proposition 4

This measure would allow the state to issue $1.5 billion in bonds to fund improvements at the state's 13 children’s hospitals, as well as other hospitals that serve children in California.

Prop. 13, approved in 1978, rolled back property taxes and placed a cap on annual property tax increases until a property was sold. This measure, backed by the California Association of Realtors, would allow some homeowners to take their existing tax savings with them to the new property they buy.

In addition to the long list of contests for state and local offices, plus county and city ballot measures, Californians also will be asked to vote on 11 state propositions and bond measures on a wide range of issues. DAN WALTERS

School shortfall looms

A

decade ago, an academic research team produced a massive report on the shortcomings of how California’s K-12 schools educate about 6 million children and adolescents. The “Getting Down to Facts” report was issued just as a severe recession hammered California, and school financing took a beating. Jerry Brown reclaimed the governorship in 2011, and since then many changes in K-12 education have occurred. Taxes were raised to dramatically increase per-pupil spending; some of the money was focused on helping poor and English-learner students close the achievement gap between them and more privileged classmates; the state adopted Common Core standards; and its accountability system was drastically revamped to downplay academic testing in favor of “multiple measures. A successor team of more than 100 researchers, once again assembled by Stanford University and Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE), this week released a follow-up study. It found that while “California’s education system is moving in the right direction… large achievement gaps persist.” The system needs more money, needs to enhance prekindergarten education and needs a better system of using data to chart achievement. Although “researchers have documented the steady progress California has made on student test performance, they also have found that California continues to lag the nation, with both lower average scores and greater disparities among student groups relative to other states.” While there’s broad agreement in education circles that closing the achievement gap is critical, there’s been virtual war between the state’s union-led education establishment and a coalition of education-reform and civilrights groups over how best to do it. It’s been fought in the Legislature, in local school systems, in the state school board and in the courts.

In fact, the new Stanford/PACE report was previewed last week at an “education equity forum” in Sacramento that delved into the achievement gap’s causes and cures. The study appears to take somewhat of a middle position in the fierce achievementgap debate, and its findings provide new ammunition for both sides while also bolstering the support from both sides for raising school spending. The researchers conclude that “while public schools in California spent about $69.7 billion on school operations in 201617, an additional $22.1 billion—32 percent above actual spending—would have been necessary for all students to have had the opportunity to meet the goals set by the state Board of Education. On a per-pupil basis, the adequate district-level cost was estimated to average about $16,800 per student—the amount of money viewed as needed to allow students in a typical California school to meet the state’s goals if it were spent effectively. In contrast, the comparably defined actual California district-level spending was only $12,750 per student.” Thus, the report presents a political challenge just as California is about to elect a new governor and a new state superintendent of schools. A 32 percent increase is just about what both candidates for superintendent, Marshall Tuck and Tony Thurmond, advocate, even though they represent opposing sides of the equity war. However, the additional $22.1 billion cited in the report would require the biggest tax increase in California history, three to four times as much as the incometax hike on the richest taxpayers that Brown persuaded voters to pass in 2012 on promises that it would help the schools. That issue will fall on the next governor, almost certainly Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. Dan Walters is a writer with CalMatters, a non-profit journalism project based in Sacramento.

An agreement signed this month by representatives of California farmers and farm-equipment dealers will make it easier for farmers to diagnose and repair equipment without accessing or downloading proprietary software or code. Leaders of the California Farm Bureau Federation and Far West Equipment Dealers Association signed the memorandum of understanding at an equipment dealership in Stockton. Under the “right to repair” agreement, equipment dealers commit to providing access to service manuals, product guides, onboard diagnostics and other information that would help a farmer or rancher to identify or repair problems with the machinery. The agreement includes restrictions. Among them: Source code for proprietary software would not be accessible, and owners would not be able to change equipment in ways that would affect compliance with safety or emissions regulations. Reliable farm equipment is crucial to the success of any farming operation, and farmers have long depended on their ability to make repairs quickly in order to keep their equipment running during harvest and other key times. This agreement gives farmers the information they need to do just that, even as equipment has become increasingly complex. Earlier this year, Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman of Stockton introduced legislation known as the Right to Repair Act that would have ensured consumers of a wide array of electronic products would receive access to manufacturers’ diagnostic and repair information. Although the bill didn’t advance in the Legislature, it produced some encouragement for the agreement between the California Farm Bureau and the Far West Equipment Dealers. Eggman told us that “access to diagnostic and repair information will help farmers get their equipment back into service more quickly, saving them valuable time and money.” Under the agreement, maintenance, diagnostic and repair information not already available will be made available for tractors and combines put into service beginning Jan. 1, 2021. Jamie Johansson, president, California Farm Bureau Federation

Journey back in time The Northern California Renaissance Faire opened last weekend at Casa de Fruta on Highway 152, about 10 miles northeast of Hollister.

This year the event added a sixth weekend, for Halloween, on Oct. 20-21. While the fantasy re-creation of a Medieval world appeals to all ages, the organizers took special pains to provide rides for kids, such as the swing above, and include many child actors in the cast of hundreds, like the drummer at left. Next weekend, Sept. 22-23, pirates will invade the village of Willingtown, and children under 7 can meet the Queen in the annual wee pirate costume contest. Sept. 29-30 is Heroes and Villains weekend, where visitors are encouraged to join the fun and dress as their favorite hero or villain from history, literature, entertainment or their own imagination. Oct. 6-7 is Oktoberfest, and Oct. 13-14 is the Masquerade weekend, with prizes for the Queen’s favorite mask. Every weekend, there are games—archery, darts, javelins, maypoles and more—and hair and face decorating, a fools’ maze, funny farm petting zoo, fortune telling and hundreds of arts and crafts. Where: Casa de Fruta, Pacheco Pass, Hwy 152, Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors can receive a $5 discount for the second and third weekends when buying online at norcalrenfaire.com. Use the code: Renaissance.

inside the vehicle when the officer fired his weapon, but was unharmed throughout the incident. The parent has not responded to attempts by the Dispatch to contact him for comment. No injuries were reported to Browning, police officers or any bystanders in relation to the series of alleged crimes and the shooting, according to authorities. Browning worked as a Hollister Police Officer from January 2002 to May 2007, according to Hollister Human Resources Analyst Diana Hillstock. Hollister Police Chief David Westrick did not return multiple phone calls. In 2005, Browning accidentally struck a pedestrian with his patrol vehicle while on-duty in Hollister, according to Hollister Free Lance archives. The accident at the corner of South Street and Prospect left the 19-year-old female pedestrian with a broken leg. A preliminary report from the California Highway Patrol noted that Browning failed to yield to the pedestrian. The alleged crimes of Sept. 9 were not Browning’s first offenses in recent weeks, according to authorities. On Sept. 7, Merced County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call on Highway 152 at Dinosaur Point, reporting a man making threats, according to Deputy Daryl Allen. The deputies arrested Browning on suspicion of assault against a police officer and possession of cocaine, Allen said.

Ribbon-cutting celebrates new fields SBHS STUDENTATHLETES TREATED TO YEAR-ROUND FIELDS

Staff report

Ed Wong

San Benito High School’s new physical education and athletic multi-use field was officially dedicated with a Sept. 10 ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to the girls’ varsity field hockey match against Gilroy. The 177,000-square-foot turf facility on the southwest side of campus was made possible by funds from the voter-approved Measure U bond measure, which, along with Measure G and district funds, is paying for various other facility upgrades on campus, according to SBHS district staff.

Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum opened the ceremony by thanking everyone involved in making the project happen, starting with the voters without whose support “this project would not have been possible.” The project was designed and constructed by Blach Construction, Verde, Aedis Designs and FieldTurf. “To our students, student-athletes, teachers and athletic coaches, this project provides an opportunity for you to enjoy a state-ofthe-art facility to improve your physical fitness and competitive spirit each day, without fail,” Tennenbaum said. “It is with this opportunity that we embrace the gift of lifelong physical fitness and good health.” Board President Steve Delay and Athletic Director Tod Thatcher thanked the board for its continued support of Baler athletics

BALER FIELD HOCKEY The San Benito field hockey team cuts ribbon at new field. and vision to design a facility on which students “can can play field hockey today, and tomorrow, if we

wanted to, we could play a varsity baseball game.” He said the field is “truly a multi-purpose facility that

will benefit our P.E. students and our athletes.” Thatcher said that on any given day after school,

more than 200 studentathletes are using the facility to play and practice on a “safe, consistent surface.”

Police arrest two suspected burglars TEENS WERE SEEN PROWLING IN AREA OF CALAIS CIRCLE AND VERSAILLES DRIVE Staff report

Hollister police officers arrested two local young men after receiving reports they were trying to burglarize vehicles in a neighborhood, according to authorities.

About 4:30am Aug. 26, officers were dispatched to the area of Calais Circle and Versailles Drive south of town, on a report of two men looking into parked vehicles. The caller provided a description of the two men and said they were seen peering into parked cars in driveways and parked on the street, police said. Hollister Police Sgt. James Weathers and Officer Miguel Masso responded to the area and located two men who

matched the description of the two prowling suspects, according to authorities. The two men discarded items when they noticed the police car approaching. The two men were identified as Juan Luis Estrada, 18, and Angel Francisco Tejeda, 19, both from Hollister, police said. The suspects smelled of burnt marijuana and spoke with slow and slurred speech when contacted by the officers, according to police. A search of the men revealed

a large concealed knife and a BB gun that looked like a real handgun. The men were also found in possession of prescription pills, marijuana hash oil, ammunition and several other knives. Several items of suspected stolen property were also recovered. A witness was contacted and positively identified the two suspects as those seen looking into parked vehicles, police said. Both suspects were arrested and transported to the San Benito County Jail.

Estrada was booked on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen property, prowling and carrying a concealed dagger, according to police. Tejeda was booked on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled substance. “The Hollister Police Department would like to thank the community member for being vigilant and proactive in reporting

the suspicious activity. Residents calling in and advising of a crime in progress is imperative to creating a safer community,” reads a press release from the Hollister Police Department. platform, but he declined to identify them. The mayor said it was ultimately up to the voters to understand each candidate’s platform. Velazquez indicated that if candidates continued to misrepresent their goals about new development in the city he may make more public statements about his support for candidates. “I’m trying not to,” said Velazquez. “But as I see more of this go on I’m tempted.” Raul Escareno, a candidate in District 3, said he also wants to focus on building infrastructure within Hollister before expanding. Escareno said he did not know any of the candidates on a personal level, but thought the mayor “had a point” with his ‘smart growth’ campaign. Many of Escareno’s points echoed sentiments of Velazquez, who said he hoped to stop growth until

Total transformation HAWKS’ NICK NICKERSON DOES A 180 DEGREE TURNAROUND emanuel lee Sports Editor

Twin power

Nickerson has a twin brother on the team in Matt, who engendered plenty of excitement as he learned the offense as the quarterback. Matt showed flashes of brilliance before suffering a groin injury three weeks ago. The team hopes to get him back under center for next week’s game, which would be vital in Anzar finishing the season strong. Nick Nickerson has also made an impact defensively, and in some instances he takes equal or greater pride in playing defense compared to offense. “If you can make a solid tackle or put a great hit on someone, it’s an amazing feeling,” he said. Since Nickerson plays both ways, he rarely comes off the field. With football being such a physical game, Nickerson often wakes up very sore the day after a game. “The next day you feel it for sure,” he said. Nickerson’s physical transformation from his sophomore to junior year was nothing short of remarkable. Nickerson said he worked out up to six hours a

Chris Mora

What Nick Nickerson did from his sophomore year to his junior year at Anzar High has been nothing short of mind-boggling. The 5-foot-6, 185-pounder said he dropped 50 pounds in that time period, driven by his desire to get in shape and realize his football potential. “I knew I had missed out on more playing time in my sophomore year because I wasn’t in good shape,” said Nickerson, a fullback and linebacker/defensive end for a Hawks squad that enters Saturday’s game against Crystal Springs Uplands at 1-3 overall. “I needed to be dedicated, to show up everyday and work.” Nickerson has done a 180-degree turnaround involving his mental approach as well. “I was not thinking of the team last year—I was just thinking of myself,” he said. “And this year honestly I’m thinking about my teammates and wanting to be a good teammate.” Hawks coach Kollin Kosmicki said Nickerson has led by example, a big reason why Nickerson was chosen as the team captain. “He was one of the guys who were really impressive in the off-season,” Kosmicki said. “He put in a lot of work and got in good shape. This year he’s really blossomed where you can see

the difference in something like sprinting drills in which he’s one of the fastest guys on the team. I picked him as captain because of the example he sets with his work ethic.” Nickerson’s tireless work ethic results in a bruising running style in which he constantly churns out yardage by getting low, driving his legs and having a will to never stop. “He’s like a bull going up the middle,” Kosmicki said. “When he gets a head of steam, he can really run over guys. He just runs really hard when he gets the ball, and that makes a big difference.”

INVITING CONTACT Anzar High junior Nick Nickerson carries the ball in last week’s game against Tomales.

Nickerson is key in short-yardage situations, but he’s also shown the ability to bust off a big gain on occasion. day—combining strength-training and running with the track team—and making smarter food choices to drop the pounds in rapid fashion.

Getting it done

“People were shocked for sure I was able to lose that many pounds,” he said. “My parents were getting worried, though, especially my mom. She said I was doing too much, but fortunately I was able to stay strong all the way through.”

Nickerson is only in his second year of playing the game— he didn’t try out for the team as a freshman, citing an intimidation factor and not having confidence. In his first-ever game as a sophomore last year, Nickerson felt a bit of unease. “It was definitely crazy,” he said. “I wasn’t ready at all, but it was fun. Things seemed to be going crazy fast and so quick, but eventually things started to slow down.” Despite being new to the

game, Nickerson has caught on fast, and he’ll be one of the vital keys for Anzar the rest of the way. Nickerson’s best game came in a 44-27 win over Kings Christian on Aug. 30, as he rushed for 103 yards on just four carries for a 25.8-yards per carry average. The Hawks are down to their fourth-string quarterback after getting hit by a number of injuries; however, they should be getting reinforcements soon as the players heal up and some become eligible to play.

and CCS,” Shorey said. Ruiz had his best season as a sophomore, and plans on rebounding from a so-so junior season. He’s already taken steps to ensure that he’ll be fresher at the end of the season compared to last year. “During the summer I trained, but not at my normal intensity,” Ruiz said. “I kind of took it easy because last year I did too much too fast and I think it affected me at the end.” Ruiz points to chemistry and a genuine friendship among the runners as key to the team’s success. During practice, Ruiz, Chavez and Loredo are often shoulder to shoulder, and depending on who is stronger on a particular day, the first to complete the workout.

Cohesiveness

“Overall, we have great chemistry because we always hang outside of school,” Ruiz said. Even though the boys team lacks a runner who will compete for an individual CCS title, it has tremendous depth—perhaps the most it’s had in recent memory. No less than 15 runners finish a workout together, speaking to the nature of just how close in talent the runners are. That makes picking the sixth and seventh runners in the lineup a tough chore because everyone is close in times, but it’s a great problem to have. Meanwhile, the girls team will be formidable yet again, with the freshman Tena and sophomore Okamoto leading the way so far. Tena took eighth among all freshmen at

If there is ever a given in high school athletics, it’s the San Benito High cross country program will either be winning league or be in contention for league championships. This year is no different, as the Haybalers have a talented and hardworking group of runners who are relishing the challenge of fending off teams in what has to be the strongest the Gabilan Division has been in recent memory. “Between our boys and girls teams, we could have one of our best combined finishes ever,” Balers cocoach Ryan Shorey said. “For the girls, I think realistically they can make a run at state again. And the boys there is a lot to be seen, but they can do some special things as well.” San Benito knows what it must do after getting a glimpse of the best at the Earlybird Invitational at Toro Park on Sept. 15. Featuring a loaded field including premier teams outside of the section, the San Benito girls took 10th in the combined results, while the boys finished a respectable 16th. In order of finish for the girls team by time, it went Cynthia Tena, Lauren Okamoto, Hailey Cross, Mariah Changco, Rian Hepner, Emily Quinby and Isabela Arreola. Tena, a freshman sensation, finished in 20 minutes, 21 seconds. For the boys team, the order

of finish went Elliot Ruiz, Josue Murillo Gonzalez, Christian Chavez, Joseph Loredo, Julian Arreola, Anton Borges and Emiliano Quintero. Shorey and co-coach Leanna Morgan have helped preserve and add onto a program where cohesiveness and team bonding matters. Recent Balers’ standouts including Sam Cortez, Ellie Kliewer, Brianna Martin, Gabriella Alvarez and Jose Ruiz all came by unannounced to offer their encouragement to the team at different points before the season started, Shorey said. “It was completely unplanned from our end, which was really cool,” Shorey said. “They told them what cross country meant to them and what it means now. Gabriella is the firstever female president at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, so that is a neat thing to see.” There’s always exciting up-and-comers in the program, and the boys team has already shown that with sophomores Borges and Murillo Gonzalez, who had an excellent time of 17:28 over the 3.0-mile course, good for 22nd best among all sophomores in the field. “We’re definitely excited about that because that means if you have sophomores on the varsity, we’re looking to have quite bit of success in the near future, too,” Shorey said. Of course, the trio of Ruiz, Chavez and Loredo are back and aiming for their fastest times ever. “They’ve done everything it takes to take it to the next level in league

A GOOD RUN Elliot Ruiz has put together a couple of strong seasons for the Balers,

who face stiff competition this season to win the Pacific Coast League Gabilan title.

the Earlybird, while Okamoto—who had a time of 20:51—finished 16th amongst the sophomores. Shorey said some of the runners don’t realize just how good they are, and hopefully will get more confident as the season goes along. “Lauren has been killing it and absolutely murdering the workouts lately,” Shorey said. “I think she’ll be kicking butt this year.” Cross is an ultra-reliable runner and had a terrific performance in the

season-opening meet two weeks ago, and, even more important, has assumed a huge leadership role on the squad. “Hailey is our vocal leader and has helped lead the team in everything,” Shorey said. “She’s really done a nice job stepping into that role that (past standouts) Amy Quinones, Katherine Monteon, Bri Martin, and Sam Cortez had in leading the team.” If Tena does this season what Okamoto did last year, the Balers are set for

a potentially special season. Conventional wisdom had it that Tena would be vying for the fifth spot, given that she’s a freshman. However, her performance at the Earlybird Invitational was striking. Shorey was almost prophetic when talking about Tena a couple of days before the Earlybird. “You never know what a freshman will do, which makes it exciting,” he said. “You can easily see a freshmen move up quite a bit from race to race.”

NANCY M. ALBANESE

August 26, 1932 – August 30, 2018

us Panos, aged 82, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 12th, 2018. He was born in Nestani Tripoli, Greece on August 28th, 1936, to Pete and Vasiliki Panos.

He married Helen Panos in 1970 and they were happily married for 41 years before her passing in 2010. They raised four children together, John, Vasiliki, the late Gus Jr., and Pete Panos. At 14 years of age, he immigrated to the United States from Greece in search of the American dream. He had a passion for cuisine and was an avid entrepreneur who proudly owned many restaurants and businesses. He was most famously acknowledged for his dedication to the Monterey Steakhouse in San Jose, which he honorably owned and ran with his three brothers, Pete, Late John Sr., and George. He was also admirably known for his ownership of the Golden Oak restaurant in Morgan Hill which was recognized as one of the top rated restaurants in California. In 1979, Gus and Helen purchased a 10 acre parcel of land in the foothills of Gilroy and built their dream home, where they lived with their children. Gus continued to be actively involved in restaurants, rental properties, his successful mortgage business, and RV storage facility. In the 1980’s he received his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his own plane and loved traveling to Reno to play his favorite game of blackjack. He shared an overall love of traveling with Helen, and they traveled often together. Their most memorable trips were vacationing to Greece and exploring the Parthenon, and to New York where they adored watching Broadway shows. Gus owned several prized race horses in the 1990’s and he loved spending quality time with the family at the races frequently. He found joy in throwing extravagant holiday parties and barbecues which were always attended by his family, friends, and his grandchildren. It has been said by those who knew and loved him: “They don’t make them like Gus anymore”. He was definitely a one- of-a-kind, outgoing, and charismatic man who found easygoing relationships and conversation wherever he went. He is survived by his brothers Pete and Toula (wife) Panos; George and Toula (wife) Panos; many nieces and nephews; his son John Panos and Heather (wife); daughter Vasiliki Panos, and his five grandchildren, Alexis, Elena, and Johnny Panos, and Crystal and Nicole Paul. Gus will be greatly missed by his entire family and lifelong friends for the everlasting future. September 21st, there will be a Trisagion service at 7 PM at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church 1260 Davis Street San Jose CA, 95126. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 22nd at 10 AM at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, followed by the burial at Oak Hill Memorial Park at 12 PM. There will be a luncheon following the burial at 1 PM at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church building fund; (408) 246-2770.
