Bad news, good news for local hospital HAZEL HAWKINS MAY GET NEW MEDICARE FUNDS, AS SALINAS ENDS DISCUSSIONS By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Bryce Stoepfel
The Sept. 20 letter from Salinas Valley Hospital hit Hazel Hawkins with a thud. The larger hospital was pulling out of talks about shared services that held out a prospect of new financial stability for the Hollister hospital. That same day, however, Hazel Hawkins learned that a year-long Hail Mary effort to convince federal officials to revise its Medicare reimbursement classification appears to have paid off. In the space of a few hours, the hospital’s fortunes improved dramatically. “For nearly a year our CFO Mark Robinson has been applying for a status change for the hospital,” said Hazel Hawkins CEO Ken Underwood in an interview this week. He said that at the Sept. 27 hospital board meeting, he would be informing them

Growth is the word on everyone’s mind in San Benito County these days—not whether to grow, but in a decades-long debate, how much and how fast. Businesses meanwhile, in manufacturing, construction and agriculture, are doing more walking than talking, expanding, investing and discovering the benefits of being close to their employees in a small-city environment. In our annual Pride & Progress section, the Free Lance takes a look at some of these issues, in Section B.
Ridgemark refines new business plan NEW LODGING UPGRADES, RESTAURANT CHANGES, NEW WATERING ARE PLANNED By Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
For Sierra Golf, managers of Ridgemark Golf Club

It's been two years since Sierra Golf Management took over, and general manager Chad Jackson said he plans to renovate the lodging and the restaurant and keep
golfers teeing up on the course. “We make small improvements every day; you won’t see the grand overnight improvements,” Jackson said. “We’ve made improvements to the rooms to make them feel more modern along with walk-in shows. The greens have started to grow, and the grass
is greener thanks to our watering program.” Sierra Golf Management, based in Chowchilla, took over the management of Ridgemark Golf Club and Resort following John Wynn’s purchase of the course for $11.5 million from former owners JMK Golf LLC. In May 2016, Sierra Golf Management signed a

Housing boom hits Fairview Road PENT-UP PLANS FUEL HOME CONSTRUCTION EAST OF CITY LIMITS By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Barry Holtzclaw
SANTANA RANCH Current construction phase east of Fairview Road is to be completed in November. The city growth projection in the 2005 General Plan had estimated that the city would grow to 44,790 by 2010, and exceed 53,000 by 2020. But the 2010 census reported more modest growth of Hollister’s population, from 34,928 to 38,404 in 2017. Newer predictions are more conservative, to 40,000 by 2020 and 47,000 by 2030.
Barry Holtzclaw
Hollister mayoral and City Council candidates are talking about “smart growth,” concerned that a renewed housing boom will put a strain on city water, sewer and police services, and increase traffic congestion, especially for commuters on Highway 25. City limits have remained static and some say development plans are harder to come by. But if you drive along Fairview Road, just outside of the eastern city limits, you wouldn’t know it. Builders’ plans approved just before the Great Recession bee stalled for several are now on the front burner. Planners expect 600 new homes to have been completed next year, fulfilling plans approved several years ago. Streets and utilities are going in, house frames are going up and entire neighborhoods are rising at a fast pace in the Sunnyslope area east of Hollister. Banks have eased credit for contractors, mortgage rates are still low and housing bargains in San Benito County continue to attract folks who work in Santa Clara County. The city limits— both geographical and
political—don’t appear to have been any impediment to the new homes being built by Anderson Homes in its Santana Ranch development, and by Legacy Homes, also in Sunnyslope. A new water treatment plant for the Sunnyslope Water District eases the strain on older systems, and an older treatment plant also is located on the gentle slopes that rise from Fairview Road. The farm fields that surround a regional CalFire station are gradually being gobbled up by large graders preparing home sites. County planners say that one construction phase of 150 new Santana Ranch homes is to be completed by November, adding to the 74 homes already built. Construction on another 200 homes is expected to begin in the winter or spring, depending on the weather, for the complete 424-home project. Legacy Homes has completed 85 of its 176home development, according to the county. Hollister planners had anticipated continued growth after the explosion of the 1990s, but in 2002 Hollister voters enacted a growth cap initiative that limits new residential development to 244 homes per year. That, plus the 2008-10 recession, slowed growth considerably, within the city limits at least.

Hazel Hawkins seeks Medicare rate Medicare designation— that classifies Hollister as a rural area. “This will alleviate a lot of the concerns in the community” about the ability of Hazel Hawkins to survive financially, concerns that Underwood said increased with news last month that the owners of Saint Louise Regional Hospital in nearby Gilroy were seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Medicare rules dictate that Critical Access hospitals must be at least 35 miles away from the nearest hospitals, on freeway — Saint Louise is about 13 miles away—but this distance rule drops to 15 miles on on secondary roads, and Highway 25 is considered a secondary road. The second hurdle that Hazel Hawkins must beat is that Critical Access hospital must have fewer than 25 hospital beds. Underwood said Hazel Hawkins will have no problem with that criterion, because, even though it is licensed at 49 hospital beds, it has average fewer than 17 occupied beds for several years, a 16.8-bed average. He said the hospital will be applying for a reduction in its number of licensed beds, to 25, to ensure its eligibility for the new designation. Underwood said he is optimistic that the new designation will go into effect as early as the start of its next fiscal year, July 1, 2019. He said there will be no changes in hospital services or its staffing levels. Robinson said the new federal designation will “give us the momentum” to

Hazel Hawkins, 1 that the way now seemed clear for the hospital to designated as a “Critical Access Hospital,” by federal Medicare officials. Instead of losing money on Medicare reimbursements—up to 15 percent below costs—, Underwood now said he is optimistic that Hazel Hawkins will be reimbursed, as early as next July, by Medicare on a cost basis. This likely will mean up to $3 to $ 4 million more per year in hospital revenue, he said. Underwood said the designation, especially designed for small, relatively isolated rural hospitals, is tough to get and relies on very strict criteria. “This is a significant development,” he said. “It’s outstanding news.” The hospital and outpatient bills of about one-third of Hazel Hawkins patients are paid by Medicare, the federal government's health insurance for seniors. Another third are paid by MediCal, the state’s insurance for low income patients and some with disabilities. “The board’s mission and vision are to provide quality healthcare services and increase access to these services in San Benito County,” Underwood said. The new Medicare designation will ease the strain on hospital finances, he said. Specifically, Robinson said he heard last week that the federal Center for Medicare Services had approved the hospital’s “distance requirement”— a make-or-break requirement for the special

get towards a break-even operation. “We’ve always made it on our own,” said Underwood. The hospital is a $120 million-a-year operation, with about 650 employees, which includes 120 medical staff. Underwood said the hospital search for the improved Medicare designation was independent of its negotiations with Salinas Valley Memorial, which began in May. He said the Sept.20 letter from the Salinas hospital was “succinct.” The CEO said the talks ended entirely on Salinas’ initiative, and were not based on any assessment of the his hospital’s financial situation. Underwood also noted that the two hospitals never were discussing any possible sale or lease of hospital operations or health services “We are sorry to inform
you,” he said the letter from Salinas read,”that at this time, Salinas Valley Hospital is not in a position to continue our evaluation of collaborative options” with Hazel Hawkins. Underwood said the Salina hospital attributed its decisions to “an unfavorable environment.” He said the two hospitals would continue their joint purchasing agreements, and will “keep the door open” for future conversations about additional collaborations. The timing of the decision was not unexpected, because the negotiating period between Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital and Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital had closed with no agreement. The two healthcare systems released a joint statement late Friday, Sept. 21,
saying they had agreed to continue to cooperate on behalf of patients. Salinas Valley President and CEO Pete Delgado stated that his hospital looks forward to “continuing the cooperative relationship we have developed between our two hospitals over the years” and would “continue to work with Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital to support the needs of the patients in our communities.” Currently, Hazel Hawkins uses Silicon Valley purchasing contracts to receive the larger hospital’s lower rates for some supplies. Hazel Hawkins will also have access to Silicon Valley education simulation labs for employees to obtain additional expertise and training. Looking to the future, the Hollister hospital said it plans to continue work
toward finding a strong collaborative healthcare partner. Although the district’s finances have improved over the last several months, CEO Ken Underwood believes a partner will help the hospital reach sustainability and grow at the same pace as San Benito County. “Our community would benefit in many ways through a partnership,” said Underwood in a statement last week. “The board of director’s vision for collaborating with a larger health system is aimed not only at financial health, but also at enhancing the population health of the community.” Other top priorities for Hazel Hawkins include enhancing local access to quality specialists and expanding recruitment of high-quality physicians locally.

DAN WALTERS
The state’s economy has some cracks
A
significant sub-theme of Gov. Jerry Brown’s climate change conference in San Francisco this month was that California is a living model of how a nation-state can go green while experiencing economic prosperity. Some Californians take it a step further, contending that going green is itself an economic spur. Certainly California’s current economy is, at least superficially, booming. The state’s official unemployment rate is 4.2 percent, a record-low level, reflecting tens of thousands of new jobs being added each month—nearly 50,000 in July alone, according to the most recent employment report. California’s total economic output is more than $2.5 trillion a year, which would place it fifth in the world were it a nation. However, the claims that California is a model of green prosperity are somewhat overblown. California is prospering these days mostly because the nation as a whole is experiencing a record-long economic expansion. The steps it has taken so far to reduce its carbon footprint have been relatively mild, so the economic impact, positive or negative, has been relatively scant. The contention that going green has
been an economic positive is unproven. The cheerleaders for that claim notoriously overcount “green jobs,” including many that would exist regardless and discounting the jobs that might be lost in the conversion. The biggest negative about the state’s economic standing, however, came in a new report issued by the Census Bureau as Brown’s conference was underway. It was the bureau’s updated report on poverty and once again, California found itself in the unenviable position of being No. 1 in that category when all economic factors are included in the calculation. While the state’s poverty rate by the Census Bureau’s “supplemental” method declined slightly since the previous report, it still is the nation’s highest at 19 percent and that’s because of California’s very high cost of living, particularly for housing. That means 7.5 million Californians, more than the population of most states, are counted as poor. And the situation is even darker when other data are put into the mix. The Public Policy Institute of California, using a methodology similar to that of the Census Bureau, came up with very similar results, but also calculated that another 20 percent or so of Californians are living in “near-poverty.”

Adding the near-poor to the total brings us to about 16 million Californians struggling to survive. That number is bolstered by the fact that 14 million Californians are being covered by the state’s Medi-Cal program of medical care for the poor, and the number would probably climb to 16 million if undocumented immigrants were eligible for its benefits. Finally, the state’s record-low unemployment rate is also somewhat misleading. The jobless rate most often cited, 4.2 percent, is the percentage of those considered to be in the workforce who lack jobs. But that doesn’t account for adults who, for one reason or another, don’t work or seek work, nor those who are working only part-time and/or below their skill levels. The Bureau of Labor Statistics actually calculates unemployment and underemployment six different ways and the most revealing, called “U-6,” includes not only the officially unemployed but “marginally attached” workers and those involuntarily working part-time. California’s U-6 rate is 9.2 percent, more than a full percentage point higher than the national rate and tied with Louisiana for the sixth highest. Until its real poverty rate and its real unemployment rate drop at least to the national average no one, especially no politician, should be boasting of California’s prosperity.

SB TRUSTEES COMMIT $10K TO ROBOTICS Staff report
Nearly 100 San Benito High School employees are alumni, according to a recent survey conducted by the school district’s Human Resources Department. In total, 96 current high school staff graduated from the school within the past half-century, from counseling clerk Hermie Ybarra and biology teacher Bill Johnson (1969 graduates) to 2014 alumna Bailey Brooks. There are 54 classified employees and 38 teachers or specialists who were once students on campus, including Principal Adrian Ramirez, Director of Educational Services Elaine Klauer, Activities Director Catalina Lemos and Director
of Technology John Frusetta. “It’s important to point out that the ‘Once A Baler, Always a Baler’ saying is more than just a slogan,”according to a district staff report. Alumni are clerks, mechanics, bus drivers, caseworkers, human resource specialists and coaches. To honor and connect all alumni, SBHS staff is creating an alumni network that will host special events on campus and in the community, a newsletter and opportunities to support academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, according to staff. More details will follow as the school year continues, but plans are underway for special events in the spring, including an alumni barbecue and campus tour and a potential golf tournament.
“We are excited about connecting (or reconnecting) our loyal alumni to their alma mater,” the announcement states. “For more than a century, San Benito High School has been an integral part of the community, through education, community service, clubs, organizations, athletics and more.”
Trustees pledge $10,000 to support Robotics
At a Sept. 11 meeting, the San Benito High School Board of Trustees committed to provide $10,000 to the school’s robotics team, led by science teacher Thien Vu-Nguyen. The team plans to use some of the funding to compete in at least two regional competitions this school year. The team is scheduled to participate in CalGames 2018 on Oct. 5-6 at Woodside High School.
Plans are underway for special events in the spring, including an alumni barbecue and campus tour.

Community ideas are sought for new supt.

Community members who would like to share their ideas about the most important qualities for the next superintendent of Hollister School District can do so in a new online survey posted on the hesd.org website. The district’s Board of Trustees hired Hazard Young Attea Associates in August to lead the search for the district’s new education leader, and an integral part of that process is gaining
community input. The short survey, which “is inviting parents and staff to participate in HYA’s Superintendent Survey,” was posted Sept. 20. “Your school district is interested in your input as they seek to hire a new superintendent,” the survey states. “This survey is designed to gather your perceptions of the school district and the importance of various characteristics found in effective superintendents. The information will be used to determine the desired characteristics of the next superintendent.” Retired administrator Matthew Barr has been filling in as interim superintendent for the
preK-8 district until a permanent superintendent is hired. Former superintendent Lisa Andrew unexpectedly resigned over the summer after serving two years, and Barr was selected July 6 to work as the interim supe on a 46-day contract. Survey respondents are asked to indicate their role with the district, then rate the district overall as well as in certain areas. Following that set of questions, the survey taker is asked to choose top four characteristics they want in a superintendent. Finally, there is a box for any additional comments and suggestions for possible candidates for the position.
This survey is designed to gather your perceptions of the district and various characteristics of effective superintendents.

One major challenge for most golf courses is maintaining grass quality. Ridgemark uses kikuyu grass on the fairway, rye grass for the rough, and poa and bent rass for the greens. Golf courses are notoriously high consumers of water, and at Ridgemark the groundskeepers water the greens every day and the fairway and rough every other day. Water for the restaurant, lodge and clubhouse is provided by Sunnyslope Water District, and water used for the course is pumped in from the San Benito Water District. Ridgemark uses more than 600 gallons of water a day. Ridgemark offers memberships for unlimited golfing, but the course is by no means a country club, it's a public golf course. About 1:20am Sept. 15, an unknown male entered the Quik Stop store at 10 San Felipe Road. The man pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the clerk and demanded money, according to police. As the robbery continued, the clerk feared for his life and attempted to escape, police said. As the clerk struggled to escape, the robber fired a single shot. The bullet struck the cash register, and the clerk was able to escape without injury. A second male suspect then entered the store, and both men stole various items, according to police. The first suspect is described as a Hispanic male about 18 to 20 years
old, short and thin, police said. He was wearing a black beanie and gray sweatshirt with black and white jogging pants. He was carrying a silver 9mm handgun. The second suspect is also a Hispanic man about 18 to 20 years old, police said. He was thin, and taller than the other suspect. He was wearing a black hoodie and black pants, with a thin mustache and blue backpack. Police released photos from video surveillance cameras inside the store in an effort to identify the suspects. Anyone with information about this investigation can call Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call WeTip at (800) 78-CRIME. IN CONTROL Ben Reed, a senior hole-set for the Balers, looks to make a play in the team’s match against Gilroy earlier in the season. Reed has developed into one of the team’s leaders and was selected as the captain of this year’s squad, which returned no starters off the 2017 team.

Coming into his own
“He’s getting out of his shell, shooting a lot more and stepping into his role,” Sigourney said. “He plays some of the sport’s backbone positions, so Dylan has really added to our team.” Fulcher, a senior, sets the tone with a willingness to compete in every situation while never slowing down. “His attitude goes a long way,” Sigourney said. “He might not show up in the stat sheet, but he has relished taking on the role of being a senior and helping the young guys learn the sport.” Oelrich, a junior goalie, looks to follow in the footsteps of past Baler standouts in the cage, including Casey Matsui, who manned the position in 2017. Oelrich has been the junior varsity goalie the last two years and has done a solid job this season. “Tyler has been great for us,” Sigourney said. “He’s provided stability in the cage for us, and that’s important when you have a young team. He’s learning his voice in there, and

Playing the hole-set position in water polo is not for the faint of heart. Just ask San Benito High senior Ben Reed, who is starting at the position for the first time in his varsity career. The position involves mental and physical warfare, as players routinely scratch, pull and tug on each other, and the best ones do it in such a way that they won’t be called for a penalty. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Reed is still relatively new to the sport and the position, but he’s come a long way and developed into an impact player. “Ben has been a really good team leader and has been huge in the pool for us at hole set,” said Brendan Sigourney, who is in his sixth season as the San Benito High coach. “To his credit, he’s really stepped it up this year and has been our go-to guy at times. He’s also ambidextrous which is pretty rare at our level while also being a vocal leader. He leads by example, never wants to sub out and is always encouraging teammates. He’s one of the guys you need on a team to get through years like this.” After looking up to past seniors, Reed is now the one his teammates look to, and he acknowledged the importance of setting a good example and making sure everyone is communicating in the pool. The Haybalers are in a transition year, as they returned no starters off a 2017 team that won the
Monterey Bay League’s Pacific Division championship. However, Reed feels this year’s squad has reason for optimism. In an 8-7 loss to Palma on Sept. 18, the Balers led 5-2 at halftime but couldn’t finish. “We know we have to finish those games,” Reed said. “We’re putting things together because the ultimate goal is to win. I can’t wait to see where we’re at near the end of the season.” The Balers have strong players in Dylan Perry, Reed Fulcher, Tyler Oelrich, Adam Bonnet, Ramon Duran and Kenneth Kliewer. Perry, a senior twometer player and hole guard, has provided a steady presence defensively while showing improvement offensively.
EYE ON THE BALL Balers sophomore Adam Bonnet battles for the ball in a match against Gilroy earlier this
season. A driver, Bonnet is an excellent swimmer, one of the reasons why he does all of the team’s sprint-offs. we’ve been lucky to have good goalies here lately.” Bonnet, a sophomore driver, has plenty of talent and speed, representing the future of the program along with sophomore Ramon Duran. Sigourney said Bonnet does all of the team’s sprint-offs, has tremendous endurance and picks up things fast. Duran, a sophomore driver, distributes the ball well, plays excellent defense and makes sound decisions with the ball. “Ramon will be a force to be reckoned with in the future,” He’s got a great attitude, is a good teammate and is a natural athlete who wants to learn. He’s coachable and someone you want to have around as an example for other players to follow.” Kliewer, a junior driver, swims
well, plays strong and affects the team in a positive way with his ability to keep things loose. “He has tons of energy, and water polo is a perfect sport for a kid like him,” Sigourney said. “He’s always happy, cracking jokes and always high energy.”
Always competitive
The Balers, who entered the week with a 1-3 record in the Pacific Coast League’s Mission Division, have been competitive in all of their matches outside of the league opener against firstplace Harbor. However, the Balers feel they’re on the cusp of a turnaround. Constant communication in the pool will be key, with discipline playing a huge role as well. Against Palma, Reed
admitted he let an opponent get the best of him, which earned him a penalty and gave Palma a man advantage. “I got scratched and hit in the back, then came back and drowned (dunked) him (put him under water),” Reed said. “They scored on a 6-on-5, so it wasn’t the smartest move from my part. I have to find other ways to fight back and stay smart. Hole-set is a very physical position, and my mindset is to get in the best position I can to score and try not to let them get in my head and just play water polo.” If Reed and his teammates continue to evolve mentally and physically, they’ll definitely make a move up the division standings and possibly contend for a division championship.

Balers look for positives amid loss SAN BENITO HIGH SEEKS TO TURN ITS SEASON AROUND WITH THE RETURN OF SLADE WILSON bryce stoepfel Staff Reporter
Chris Mora
Four games into the San Benito High’s first year in the Pacific Coast League Gabilan Division and the season is already on the brink. But it’s not over yet. The Balers’ 42-20 loss to Aptos High last Friday was bleak, but out of a few bright spots of hope, the return of senior quarterback Slade Wilson was one. The Balers have six more division games left, and if they’re going to contend, they’ll need their senior leader to shine. “We lost the turnover battle in the first half, and the defense was on the field too long,” Wilson said. “The offense wasn’t able to get first downs, but in the second half we cleaned things up. We were able to move the ball really good. We switched up the cadence to get them to jump offsides. The second half was way better than the first half.” The Balers are in a hole. At 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league, the Balers were on the wrong side in their three losses, with a lopsided scoring differential of 128-40. The season’s lone bright spot was a 26-16 victory over Los Gatos (4-1, 1-0) on Sept. 7. Aptos (4-0, 1-0) gave the Balers a shot to start their division schedule the right way. Wilson was back, and after the win against Los Gatos, the team had confidence and two weeks of solid practice. Unfortunately, it was the same old story for San Benito after Aptos scored
HE’S BACK Quarterback Slade Wilson hopes to lead the Balers to a big turnaround in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division play. the game’s first 27 points before the Balers got on the board. “You can’t turn over the ball three times, that’s 21 points,” Balers coach Bryan Smith said. “You can’t come out lackadaisical. You can’t come out with a lack of focus. We have a lot of maturing to do.” San Benito lost Wilson because of an injured Osteitis Pubis, a severe inflammation of muscles in the pelvis. Quarterback Nate Green started the season opener against Terra Nova but was replaced by Michael McShane in the third quarter. McShane started the next two games
Focus Fitness Flexibility
and was 12 of 32 for 228 yards and a touchdown and interception.
Healthy and ready
A well timed bye week following the Los Gato game helped to ease Wilson’s return to the starting lineup. He appears to be healthy and ready to go for the rest of the year. “I wouldn’t have played him if he wasn’t 100 percent,” Smith said. “Right now I’m almost 100 percent if not, I am 100 percent,” Wilson said of his injury status. “I feel good.” Wilson’s stat line was pretty impressive against
Aptos, as he was 7 of 10 for 136 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 91 yards on 10 carries. Both of Wilson’s touchdown passes went to senior running back Stevan Navarro, including one from 25 yards out early in the fourth quarter. The Balers managed to generate 393 yards of offense compared to 377 for Aptos, but turnovers are killers and one, in particular, was practically murder. Trailing 21-0, the Balers stood at Aptos’ 5-yard line and had a first-andgoal. Wilson took a hit from an Aptos linebacker, who jarred the ball lose

behind the line of scrimmage. Sophomore defensive back Fisher Johnson scooped up the loose ball and ran 95 yards for another Aptos touchdown. “I feel that the game is on my shoulders a little bit,” Wilson said. “I felt responsible for the two turnovers, but I felt I had to flush that in the second half and get to work to make sure we finished strong.” The Balers are without one other crucial contributor, their home field. As work continues on their new football stadium, the Balers play their home games at Rabobank
Stadium in Salinas. The $42.5 million investment funded by Measure G will undoubtedly benefit future Balers, but for seniors this year, the loss of home field advantage is real. “That does affect us,” Navarro said after the Aug. 30 loss to Wilcox. “It’s different. It’s not at home. It’s a different feeling to come out here, but that’s not an excuse to lose like this.” There’s still time to get back into contention. On Friday the Balers go on the road to take on the Christopher High (3-1, 1-0), a team they have buried in the past.

D
ennie Van Tassel, 79, died in Kirkland, Washington, after a long battle with leukoencephalopathy. Computer scientist, professor, mathematician, author, much loved father, brother, son and companion, Dennie was born in Clear Lake, South Dakota to Rush and Florence Van Tassel. He had two siblings, Marge and Jim, with whom he remained close his entire life.
R
obert (Bob) John Millar, Jr. passed away on September 7, 2018 with his family at his side, in San Jose, CA. Robert was born in Chickasha, OK to the late Robert John Millar, Sr. and Mary Katherine (Phillips) Millar. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jeeta, and his siblings, William Forrest Millar and Mary Marcia Millar Rector. Robert is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Susan Millar Banker and David Banker, Virginia Millar Rittenhouse and Tony Rittenhouse, Lavenia Katherine Millar and Thomas Heim; his grandchildren Robert David Banker and wife Janel Rodas Banker, Christopher Millar Banker and wife Rachel Banker, William Charles Rittenhouse, and Sarah Katherine Millar Rittenhouse; great-grandchildren Lorren Banker, Matthew Banker, Ryleigh Banker, and soon-to-beborn Baby Boy Millar Banker. Robert attended Oklahoma University. His education was cut short after three years when he enlisted in the Navy in 1943 to serve his country. Assigned to the Seabees, Robert was sent to Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Islands. In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and returned to Oklahoma. Robert and Jeeta married in 1946. In 1955 the family moved from Oklahoma to Hollister, CA. Robert worked for Sterling Lumber Co. Four years later, Robert and family moved to his beloved Morgan Hill, where he would spend his next 59 years. He became the manager of Sterling Lumber until its closing. Subsequently, he worked in sales for Oakley Plywood and Doors (T.M. Cobb), until his retirement in 1987. Bob served on the Morgan Hill Planning Commission and was a member of the Morgan Hill Rotary International, serving as President 1966-67. Robert and Jeeta were members of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church. In retirement, Bob took pleasure in golfing, taking his grandchildren out for ice cream, Sunday dinners with family, exercising and coffee with new-found friends. To the end, Bob was a gentleman, holding doors for anyone, helping others from his walker or wheelchair, thanking everyone who ever helped him, with a twinkle in his blue eyes, a smile, and his soft Oklahoma accent. Bob’s family wishes to thank the caregivers who made his last few years in his home possible. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 11:30am at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 17740 Peak Avenue, Morgan Hill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Robert’s name to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), any Veterans Group, or the Building Fund at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Morgan Hill.
Upon graduation from high school, he joined the Marines and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. After his service to his country, he completed a BS in Mathematics at the University of Southern California and an MA in Mathematics at California State College, Los Angeles. He put himself through school by working full time for the duration. After graduating, he settled in Santa Cruz, California where he worked for 25 years as System Administrator at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He subsequently embarked on a second career as Professor of Computer Science at Gavilan Community College, finally retiring 15 years later at age 76. He was never one for bureaucracy and would frequently skip meetings, to the occasional frustration of the administration. Instead, he put his students first, making himself endlessly available via office hours, labs, and on-line coursework. Dennie also authored five books, wrote magazine articles, and submitted many letters to the editor at newspapers including the New York Times. His strong work ethic never relented until very late in life, when declining health forced him to slow down. He married in 1968 and had two children, who were by his side at his passing. His daughter and son have many memories of their father’s boundless energy. Tearing down an old barn and rebuilding it on their urban farm with his son, driving to Baja California in a VW van and camping on the beach, taking long runs through the University hills, donning his bee suit to collect honey from his beehives, and surprising his daughter upon her high school graduation with a trip to Paris and London are just a few examples of his adventurous, generous spirit. After his marriage ended in divorce he found Marlene Bumgarner, his companion for almost 20 years who was by his side the week of his passing. He helped to parent her youngest child, Deborah Eltgroth, during her high school years, and she considered him her stepfather. Dennie will be remembered for his generosity, dry sense of humor, unpresuming presence, strong work ethic and love of travel. He is survived by his daughter Sonia Gabrielson (Jacob), son Eric Van Tassel (Rebecca), brother James Van Tassel (Nancy), sister Marge Seuss, and companion and sweetheart Marlene Bumgarner, along with four beautiful grandchildren (Jessica, Nathan, Blake and Chloe) and many other friends, colleagues and family members. All will miss him dearly. A Celebration of Life will occur on October 7, 2018 at 2:30pm at Peace United Church of Christ, 900 High Street in Santa Cruz, California. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
