Dog park search turns up no more bombs CITY REOPENS DOG PARK AT CITY AIRPORT AFTER FIRM SCANS TURF By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor

➝ Airport Bomb, 8

Robert Eliaso

The City of Hollister Dog Park reopened Oct.23, after a thorough search of the site near the Hollister Municipal Airport yielded only metal junk—and no more unexploded bombs like the one that had closed the park for more than a month. Airport Manager Mike Chambless said city crews on Tuesday carefully dug into five holes that had been identified by special ground-penetrating radar as containing metal, and found scrap metal and old metal fence posts. The spots in the park had been marked with bright pink spray paint by a firm hired by the city earlier this month after an

Candidates file finance forms CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES RAISE MONEY, AND OTHERS DECIDE TO SELF-FUND By Jaqueline McCool Reporter

As the 2018 election inches closer, local candidates have been competing to collect campaign contributions for basics like yard signs, pamphlets and call lists.

With one more filing deadline—Oct. 26— before Election Day, Nov.6, not all Hollister City Council candidates have filed paperwork to let voters know basic information about campaign spending. The state’s Fair Political Practices Committee (FPPC) requires candidates to complete a series of forms that declare campaign finance activities in the interest of public transparency.

All documents are public record and can be accessed in person through the City Clerk’s office or online via the City’s election portal. In an effort to understand how Hollister City Council candidates have been raising and spending campaign money, the Free Lance looked at each candidate’s public forms and requested comments via email from each candidate on specific contributions

or trends noted in the filings. Each candidate was asked to describe his or her fundraising approach. The filings in this article were updated at the end of September, as the candidates continue to get contributions they will continue to file. The next report deadline is Oct. 26. Candidates who anticipate spending or receiving more than $2,000 in campaign funds must file several forms with the

Candidates do not have to create a campaign bank account if they are only spending money to cover campaign fees. wants,” Rodriguez said. He added that his family roots in Hollister give him a unique insight to the challenges facing local citizens and “on holding people accountable for their actions while still being empathetic to the obstacles in their lives.” Both candidates pointed to the sluggish pace at which cases move through San Benito County courts as an issue they would work on improving, if elected. “Litigants shouldn’t have to wait so long” to see the outcome of their cases, LaForge said. “I’d keep the calendars moving as quick as possible.” Rodriguez said, “I have a number of ideas for programs that could help the San Benito County Superior Court, including court-directed mediation for civil litigation…and electronic access to all cases so that people can easily see what’s happening in their cases.” Rodriguez said he is aware of the funding challenges to such an electronic system, and he would push for such funds while working on judicial councils. Rodriguez added he would like to improve the “self-help services” that are available at San Benito County Superior Court. LaForge noted he would like to work toward establishing a veterans court in San Benito County if he is elected. Such a program would direct military veterans accused of criminal offenses to seek treatment for mental health issues and other services to keep them out of trouble. LaForge noted he has firsthand experience working with veterans, many of whom he has defended as a criminal defense attorney. He acknowledged the funding for a veterans court might be a hurdle. Both candidates said they were inspired to run for the judge’s seat by Tobias’ retirement. LaForge said when he thought about running earlier this year, he approached Tobias and asked if he would be seeking re-election. Tobias said he was not. “I talked to my family, and we said it could be a good move,” LaForge said. He added, “It’s time for a change—change for me, change for the bench.” Rodriguez added, “I’m running for San Benito County Superior Court Judge to have a broader impact on my community.”

GUEST OPINION MIKE WADE

Trump deadline for new water rules promise farm relief

A

n order signed by President Trump on Oct. 19 will provide welcome relief to Western farmers, cities, rural communities and wildlife refuges that have struggled under water supply rules that are long overdue for an update. Prioritizing national interest and the value of California food production, the president’s order requires a review of existing biological opinions by August 2019. The deadline will bring to a close the review of rules governing the long-term operation of the federal Central Valley Project and California State Water Project, which has been underway since 2016. The president’s action will greatly benefit Central Valley communities and the environment. Since 1992, water supply restrictions have had severe economic consequences for farms and the people who depend on them for work. Many of the state’s most disadvantaged communities have suffered due to scarce water supplies. Wildlife refuges that are a critical component of the Pacific Flyway have had insufficient water to meet the needs of millions of ducks, geese, shorebirds, songbirds and endangered animals in large parts of the Central Valley and the Klamath Basin. An ongoing review of the rules governing these critical water supplies only delays the ability of these important areas to recover.

The 2019 deadline will also help address water shortages that have occurred across the West as the result of federal regulations overseen by multiple agencies. It offers hope to farmers and ranchers served by federal water projects in the Pacific Northwest, including the Columbia Basin and the Klamath Basin. The president’s order places the responsibility of operating the federal water projects with the Department of the Interior, to be supported by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The action prohibits any impacts to threatened or endangered species protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. This issue has been scrutinized by the executive branch as far back as 2011. At that time, President Obama observed that the Interior Department is in charge of salmon while they’re in freshwater, but the Commerce Department handles them when they’re in saltwater. Those overlapping jurisdictions have only slowed efforts to help the fish. Improved coordination between federal agencies will promote more efficient, effective and coordinated management of all responsibilities for anadromous and freshwater fish in Western watersheds, from the highest reaches of our headwaters to the Pacific Ocean.

This action is an important and commonsense move that will benefit Western farmers and ranchers whose livelihoods depend on federal water projects. There’s no question that the Central Valley has lagged behind the economic recovery experienced in other parts of the state. These changes will not only help improve water supplies for farms, farmrelated businesses and disadvantaged rural communities, they will provide the incentive to put science-based solutions to work to help recover iconic native fish species that have suffered under the existing regulatory approach. Implementation of the Endangered Species Act can be better for both species and people, and the president’s action moves us in that direction. It’s time to grow beyond the culture of conflict that has governed California water for too long. We need streamlined solutions that benefit species and that benefit both the farmers who provide California-grown food and farm products and everyone who depends on those products. Mike Wade is with the California Farm Water Coalition. Also contributing to this opinion piece was the Family Farm Alliance, the California Farm Bureau Federation and Western Growers.

The training bombs contain phosphorus and black powder. The City Council voted early this month to hire a firm to use ground-penetrating radar to inspect the entire dog park area. The initial cost is $7,000. Chambless said he found a 1942 map of the airport site, which showed that there had been an

incinerator at the current site of the dog park. The dog park is several hundred yards south of the runway and hangars at the city airport, which also is home to a Cal Fire aerial firefighting crew and general aviation, helicopter, flight school and glider facilities. He said he was confident the city needed to look no further than the former incinerator site for possible unexploded bombs based on information he obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers.

He said the government reports showed that during World War II, military planes conducted practice bombing runs several miles away from the current airport, at five different locations. Chambless said that since no more digging is planned in the dog park area, and since it has been scanned by the groundpenetrating radar, there is no danger at the site. He said the city is planning on improvements to METAL UNDERGROUND Pink circles mark sections of the the dog park, including Hollister dog park on Oct.22, one day before scrap metal was wire mesh underlayment. pulled out of the ground, allaying fears of more old bombs.

New laws open some police records

BODY-CAMS, 911 CALLS, DASH CAMS WILL BE ACCESSIBLE Michael Moore Editor

First Amendment and civil rights advocates say the governor’s signature on two new state laws dealing with the release of police records will go a long way toward improving transparency of information and enhancing public trust in their local governments. Gov. Jerry Brown signed the two laws—AB 748 and SB 1421—earlier this month, and they will go into effect July 1, 2019. AB 748 will give the public greater access to police records related to specific incidents, including 911 call recordings, surveillance footage gathered as evidence, body-cam and dashcam video footage, and other audio/video footage

PROTECTING NEIGHBORHOODS FROM THE THREAT OF WILDFIRES

With new wildfires threatening our local communities, PG&E is partnering with our customers in high fire-threat areas to accelerate and expand our vegetation management work. We will be examining and addressing critical vegetation across 7,100 miles of power lines.

In order to keep our neighborhoods safe, PG&E may need to trim or remove vegetation on or near properties in high firethreat areas. PG&E’s action plan includes the following steps: ■ Step 1: Our safety inspectors will be in your neighborhood to determine what vegetation may need to be trimmed or removed. ■ Step 2: If needed, we will mark trees that need to be addressed and contact you to discuss the results of the safety inspection. ■ Step 3: We will perform safety work shortly after the inspection. ■ Step 4: We will plan to begin wood debris removal within a few weeks after completion of the safety work (unless you would like to keep it).

KEEPING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFE

You can help keep your family and neighbors safe by maintaining defensible space around your home and property. We recommend you regularly trim bushes and trees, remove any dry or dead vegetation and be sure to leave space between trees and plants.

Now, and in the years ahead, we must all work together to be better prepared for wildfires.

To learn if you live in a high fire-threat area and what you can do to keep your community safe, please visit pge.com/wildfiresafety.

The 2018 wildfire season is already one of the worst on record — with more than 1.5 million acres burned and more than 1,000 homes lost. And it’s not over yet. With the wildfire risk increasing at an alarming pace, the 2018 wildfire activity is on track to exceed the 2017 wildfire season, which was the most destructive on record.

Nash Road closes at high school

Photo courtesy of San Benito High

The Nash Road closure through the San Benito High School campus is in effect between Monterey and West streets from 7am to 7pm weekdays following a “grand closing” ceremony Monday morning. The high school hostedweremony marking the official closure of Nash Road where it bisects the campus. The ribbon cutting was at 10:30am. It involved district trustees, principal Adrian Ramirez and superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum. That portion of Nash is now closed from 7am to 7pm on weekdays now that the River Parkway bypass is functioning west and south of campus. This barrier is what westbound motorists on Nash Road now see, to allow students to walk freely from one side of campus to the other.

SBHS invites parents to Parent Univ. HIGH SCHOOL WILL HOST TWO MORE FREE SESSIONS IN NOV., DEC. Staff report

Seventeen families attended the first Parent University of the 2018-19

school year Oct. 16 at the San Benito High School library. The school district reported that the free event—a joint effort of the San Benito High School District, San Benito County Office of Education and Aromas-San Juan Unified School District— focused on mental health and social/emotional

resources available to students and parents. The second Parent University event—a family and community discussion on understanding opioids—is scheduled for Nov. 6 at 6pm in the school library. A session on online safety and security tips with a focus on cyberbullying and social media, will take place Dec. 4 at 6pm.

All sessions include free childcare, a light dinner and coffee and other refreshments. “Parents were very engaged and appreciated the resources and communication provided about mental health,” said Family and Community Engagement Coordinator Lorena Villagomez of the first Parent University

event. “We also piloted a youth session, and the nine high school students who attended participated with Youth Alliance GUIAS (Guiding and Understanding Individuals in Achieving Success) in a smallgroup session discussing mental health” while parents attended sessions in English or Spanish. Presenters included

Community Solutions, Youth Alliance and Baler 2003 alumna Jennifer Denton from Monterey County Behavioral Health. “We are excited to continue this model for the next two sessions,” Villagomez said. For information about upcoming Parent University events, contact Villagomez at (831) 637-5831,

Some candidates file forms, some don’t Campaign Money, 1 over $25 must be documented. Contributions of $100 or more must be shown on the filings with the name and employment of contributing party; this includes businesses. When looking at a candidate’s FPPC documents, the page may list monetary contributions that were under $100 that were not required to be fully disclosed, but contribute to the campaign’s total funds. More information on the rules of FPPC campaign filings in local elections can be found at http://www.fppc.ca.gov/ content/dam/fppc/NSDocuments/TAD/Campaign%20Manuals/ Manual_2/Final_Manual_2_Entire_Manual. pdf. Here is a summary of the campaign statements filed as of Oct. 19:

MAYOR Gordon Machado

Gordon Machado has received $8,022 in monetary contributions, giving himself $2,700 in loans for a total of $10,722. A notable contribution to Machado’s campaign is $5,000 from Alpha Teknova, a biomedical research company based in Hollister. Machado said he first became connected with Teknova after learning that CFO Richard Goozh founded the Independent Committee for San Benito County Job Growth. Machado joined the

committee and believes he has gained the company’s support because of what he calls his pro-business stance. “I am committed to supporting new ideas and new ways to bring businesses to Hollister, add more local jobs and reduce the number of people who have to commute to work,” said Machado. “Teknova believes I am the best probusiness candidate.” In order to begin his campaign, Machado said he gave himself a loan to cover initial costs. Machado told the Free Lance that he has not taken any money from political action committees (PAC) and that there are no PACs giving money on his behalf.

Keith Snow

Keith Snow had not filed any contribution statements. He told the Free Lance that he has chosen not to actively fundraise. “I am not for the money,” said Snow. “In the past when I did consider it, after talking with people of the community, people are barely making ends meet.”

Ignacio Velazquez

For the 2018 campaign, incumbent Mayor Ignacio Velazquez hasn’t declared any monetary contributions or loans. However, he has declared a $455 non-monetary contribution. A non-monetary contribution is a contribution given to a candidate, such as an event space rented

without a fee. The nonmonetary contribution is evaluated at what that contribution would cost at market value. Velazquez had a starting balance for his 2018 campaign of $1,515.66 and told the Free Lance this was left over from his past campaigns.

DISTRICT TWO In the District 2 City Council race, incumbent Mickie Solorio Luna has out-raised challenger Rolan Resendiz.

Mickie Solorio Luna

Incumbent Luna has received $5,083 in monetary and $274 in non-monetary contributions, for a total of $5,357. There is a $2,883 contribution on Luna’s filings that does not have a name attributed. She told the Free Lance this is from individual contributions collected at a fundraising event earlier in her campaign. Because the compilation of monetary contributions at the event were over $2,000, Luna had to declare them on her filings. Luna also received $200 from the Hollister Police Association, $200 from Central Coast Leasing and $1,500 from the Law Office of Nooshin Delii. The rest of Luna’s filings can be found on the Hollister election portal. Luna said she works with Delii as chair of a non-profit that attempts

Luna said this was the largest contribution from a single donor to her campaign. “She’s the only one who gave me that much money,” said Luna. “That’s because I’ve been working for years with her.”

Rolan Resendiz

Rolan Resendiz has raised $3,863 total in contributions. Some notable filings to Resendiz’s campaign are $300 from Hollister Paint Company, $150 from San Benito County Supervisor, Jaime De La Cruz, $500 from Sanilary Truck Drivers & Holpers, $500 from National Union of HealthCare Workers, $500 from RJR Environmental Prof Services, $200 from San Benito Heathing & Sheetmetal, lnc. Resendiz also received loans of $527 from Joel Esqeuda and $623.48 from Tinaya Aguila. Resendiz said he Interviewed for the endorsement from the National Union of HealthCare Workers and was selected to receive the contribution. Other than these contributions, Rolan said his method to fundraising has been mostly residents reaching out and hoping to contribute.

Has no filing and did not respond to the Free Lance’s request for comment.

Honor Spencer

Spencer currently has file no paperwork, but said she is preparing to declare her largest contribution in her campaign for $251 from Service Employees International Union local 521. The union’s website says, “Local 521 represents 40,000 public and nonprofit, private sector workers in the central Bay Area region and in the Central Valley.”

DISTRICT 4 In the District 4 race Marty Richman has outraised Salvador Mora, mostly because he gave himself a campaign loan.

Marty Richman

Richman reported he gave his campaign a $3,000 loan and has not declared any other contributions. He did not respond to requests for comment.

Salvador Mora

Salvador Mora has not filed any contributions and did not respond to the Free Lance’s request for comment.

he considers his college options, Torres struggles to overcome his fear of getting in the ring for his first fight. “There’s something in me that makes me unsure if I want to compete; it’s a strange fear of mine,” Torres said. “I want to overcome it some point, but at this point, I want to train as much as I can.” Bryan Alvarez of Gilroy has been fighting at Stick and Move for almost two years, and through boxing, Alvarez found peace of mind after years of struggling with trouble at home and at school. “I’m not the kind of person who goes out to parties, but when I do boxing, I feel like I stand out,” Alvarez said. Boxing has helped Alvarez build confidence. He’s more talkative, and better able to express his feelings. However, mounting bills at home have forced Alvarez to choose between working harder to help support the family or keep boxing. “I need $1,000 for boxing. I need a new car, I need to help out at the house, and I don’t make much money,” Alvarez said. Alvarez lives in an apartment in Stoney Court, a neighborhood he describes as “one of the most ghetto parts of Gilroy.” The family still struggles, but his mother works to save money to buy a house and fix her credit. Rising rents in Gilroy may soon force the family to move to Los Banos, he said. Alvarez works as a cashier in the morning and

On the east side of the railroad tracks in old Gilroy, in an old square brick building that used to be a PG&E substation, kids spend the night punching each other in the face. Usually, that means trouble. But at Stick and Move Boxing, the longtime Gilroy amateur boxing gym run by Rick Mello, flying fists and hard hits come with life lessons, newfound confidence and friendships. “The kids have a place to go,” said Mello, 83. “This was a bad part of town, but it mellowed out a little. All these kids come here, and they socialize. We kind of watch them to make sure it’s safe. We haven’t had any problems.” For $45 a month, every Monday through Saturday, up to 20 kids at a time spend their after-school hours learning the ropes of boxing. It’s a safe place for kids ages 8-18. Mello and coaches Jose Soto and Derek Shingu are there to watch over the kids, but also to coach seven boxers who fight in USA Amateur Boxing tournaments from Salinas to Sacramento. Among the hundreds of kids who have gone through Stick and Move, a couple stand out from the rest. Mello coached Kelsey Jeffries to a state

featherweight championship in 1992, and Gilroy’s No. 1 boxing family, the Guerreros, spent some time with Mello back when he had a gym on Gilroy’s south side near the sewer plant. “Victor, the middle brother, came in first; Robert didn’t come in until later,” Mello said. “When they came and the word spread, I had kids coming up to my ears. We used to fight all over the place. When Robert came, the dad, Ruben, got involved. When you get fathers and sons involved in this game, that’s when I step away. Blood is thicker than water. I’m telling the kid one thing and the father is telling him another, and the kid gets all screwed up.” Two of Mello’s current students, Azael Torres and Bryan Alvarez, come from different backgrounds and circumstances, but through their shared love of boxing, they have formed a strong friendship. Torres, 17, is a senior at Leigh High School in San Jose and started coming to Stick and Move Boxing because his grandmother lives nearby in Gilroy. “The thing I love about martial arts is the discipline; it shows you how to put a better version of yourself out there,” Torres said. When Torres started boxing, he struggled with his weight, coming in at 220 pounds. After six months of clean eating, hydration and exercise, Torres dropped below 160 pounds. Now, as

Torres has worked since he was 14, but even at 19, the realities of life have forced him to think of the future. “I’ve been boxing for two years, and I wonder if I put those years to waste,” Alvarez said. “But then I start thinking, I spend those two years, and if I

can’t go pro, What was I doing with my time? It’s a back and forth, and I don’t know how to decide. There’s nothing to show that I am getting better. It’s a struggle.” Despite the struggles, Alvarez found peace of mind and friendship through boxing. “I met Brian through boxing, and that’s why

we’re such close friends now,” Torres said. “We starting sparring together, and it was like, sometimes the best enemies make the best friends. We would go in and spar really hard. She views growth as a “trickle down effect,” and said that if residences are available people will come and in turn businesses will as well. “If people cannot afford to live here they move on with their jobs,” said Luna. “With the housing projects comes businesses” Luna said candidates that don’t support residential growth in Hollister likely do not understand the city’s history. Luna cited the building moratorium which began in 2002 and which halted growth in Hollister following sewage problems that resulted in million dollar fines from the state water board. Students press climate change battle OUTDOOR CLUB AT SBHS TO SEND LETTER ON CLIMATE Staff Report

Seeking to encourage local and state political candidates to use the power of an elected office to help combat climate change, the San Benito High School Outdoor Club has drafted a letter encouraging these politicians to take action that reflects the necessity to protect the environment. During a lunchtime meeting on Oct. 23, Outdoor Club Co-Presidents Ian Sills and Shelby O’Neil and Advisor Donald “Chip” Gauvreau, reviewed the letter with club members and asked them to add their signatures to it prior to its distribution to politicians. The letter begins, “Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election, as a collective and club of diverse and concerned high school students, we hope that your actions, whether legislative or personal, will reflect the necessity of combating climate

change and protecting the environment.” Referencing the impacts of climate change on nature, weather and animal species, the letter says “it is imperative that our legislatures and representatives take action across all levels of government to stop accelerating our societies movement toward irreversible climate change.” Sills said the letter was drafted with the hope that politicians “will support environmental awareness and action.” Gauvreau, noting that none of the club members reviewing the letter are of voting age, told them that the reputation that their generation has of apathy and being overly concerned with how many “likes” an Instagram post has is not representative of the students with whom he interacts on campus. “It’s just not true and we see it as educators here that there are plenty of people out there that are passionate,” he said. “We saw what happened in Parkland, Florida where that horrible shooting happened. Instead of just sitting back and complaining about it, those

LEADING THE WAY Balers senior Aidan Pung has been an integral member of the offensive line for the past two seasons. Like his linemates,

Pung gets to his spot, drives his feet and gets under the pads of defensive linemen. The play of the offensive line has been key for a potent ground game.

A Hollister tradition HAYBALERS’ OFFENSIVE LINEMEN ARE PERFORMING WELL AGAIN emanuel lee Sports Editor

Undersized no longer

For the longest time, Hollister’s linemen have been known to be on the smaller end of the spectrum compared to similarly successful high school programs. However, that never prevented them from being effective. But in recent years the Balers’ linemen have beefed up to the point where they look stout while coming off the bus. Pung is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, Saldana is 5-10 and 280, Sanchez is 5-6 ½ and 235, Ramirez is 5-10 and 243, Toscano is 5-9 and 240, and McShane is the smallest of the bunch at 5-10 and 195 pounds. With size, strong fundamentals, a willingness to pay the price, take in instruction and be flat-out nasty on the field, it’s no wonder the offensive line is a perennially strong unit. The offensive linemen are downright intense and take pride when it comes to doing their respective jobs. Each player has a different mindset or approach when they’re battling defensive linemen. Saldana takes an only the strong will survive attitude.

The Hollister High football program has always been known to have a solid offensive line. This season is no different. In left tackle Diego Ramirez, left guard Jesus Toscano, center Blaze McShane, right tackle Aidan Pung and right guards Nate Sanchez and Joey Saldana, the Haybalers have a stout offensive line that continues to improve with each game. Year in and year out, the Hollister offensive line opens up lanes and holes for the running backs to get to the second level. That often results in the Haybalers going on long drives that allow them to possess the ball for long periods of times as they rip off chunks of yardage with each carry. The recipe every year remains the same: hard-working players who love football and an offensive line coach who teaches them well. That would be Chris Cameron, the longtime coach who save for one year as the junior varsity head coach in 2016 has been coaching the Hollister offensive linemen for nearly three decades. “I haven’t had many coaches in my life, but I can’t image a better teaching coach than coach Cam,” Toscano said. “(Playing offensive line) pretty much comes down to technique, and coach Cam is the best coach to teach us and motivate us to strive for perfect technique,” Ramirez said. “You don’t have to

be the biggest or strongest guy, but as long as you know how to do the fundamentals, you can be successful. I think all of us have been doing good.” Indeed, that is evident whenever the Balers are getting into the end zone frequently— as they did in putting up 47 points in a lopsided win over Seaside last week—and when the running backs hit the second level without resistance from the defense. Ramirez played defense in his freshman year on the freshmen team, then made the switch to the offensive line on the junior varsity team as a sophomore. “Coach Cam wanted me on offense, and he always gets what he wants,” Ramirez said.

STRONG UP FRONT Jesus Toscano (71) and Diego Ramirez (67) are part of a Hollister offensive line that has

paved the way for the team to gain huge chunks of yardage via the ground game. “I go out there and pretend I’m like a wild boar and go crazy,” said Saldana, who battled a neck issue all season and is hoping the team makes an extended playoff run so he can make a possible return this season. “The quarterback and my teammates are my blood (family), and I have to be a wild boar and protect the babies.” Said Pung: “The mindset I have as coach Cam explains it is to take my guy and plant him somewhere else and find a new piece of real estate to plant him in.” Ramirez focuses on what he has to do for every play.

“My mindset is about who is in front of me and what is about to happen,” he said. “I tell myself I have to be faster, stronger and make sure the defender doesn’t get to the spot before I do.” Sanchez expressed a similar mindset as Saldana, noting how animals in a family protect each other. “I know if I mess up I can get one of them hurt,” he said. “I think of myself as protecting a family member and know the guy across from me pretty much wants to hurt my family. So I get into this mindset that I can’t let

anyone get past me. I’m pretty much playing for my brothers next to me.” The offensive line builds chemistry by repeating drills literally hundreds of times, watching video together and building camaraderie off the field. Pung and Ramirez are probably the most experienced players of the bunch, having played organized football for 10 years. “We’ve been executing our basic run schemes really well,” Ramirez said. “We’ve been ➝ Balers, page 21

Balers: Offensive line continues strong tradition ➝ From page 20

FATHER-SON Haybalers coach Bryan Smith, seen here with his son, Cadence, praised the team’s offensive line, noting their dedication, grit and playing with a physicality needed to excel in the trenches. The Balers play at Salinas High on Friday. of the season, as he said he suffered a pinched nerve or sprained muscle in his neck in the first game of the season after getting his head turned while at the bottom of the pile. “I kept playing with it, which probably wasn’t a good idea,” he said. “It finally got to a point where I needed to get it checked out because it was causing headaches.”’ Every Hollister player who completes a season deserves credit for making a commitment and putting in long hours to better themselves and the team. For a lot of boys growing up in Hollister and interested in football, their goal is to one day wear a Hollister uniform. “I’m pretty much fulfilling my dream of being on the varsity and it’s great,” Sanchez said.

sports for that matter— growing up. “When I was a kid, I dug really big holes in the backyard and found my dad’s chickens and collected eggs,” Saldana said. “I was really into trains and Tonka trucks. And I was skinny all way into the sixth grade before I found Jack in the Box. After that, I just got bigger.” The offensive linemen have plenty of motivation to do well, including not wanting to get a tongue-lashing from Cameron, whose voice booms from the sidelines when a linemen isn’t playing up to standards. “You know he’s doing it for your success, but at the moment it’s like, ‘Damn, I did something wrong,’” Toscano said. Pung said Cameron hasn’t gotten on him too much over the years, meaning Pung either has a really thick skin, usually does his job or a combination of both. “I haven’t messed up much because I’ve been with coach Cam for three years and he hasn’t really yelled at me for messing up too much,” Pung said. The linemen know what’s expected of them, and it all starts with fundamentals. When the linemen are in their stance, they have to get off the ball with precision and quickness. “The first step is the most crucial step,” Sanchez said. “And the second step is to make sure to drive our feet and get our hands inside the D linemen’s numbers.” The Hollister offensive linemen are Ford tough, as they play through various ailments. Saldana has been playing through some major pain for most

together for a long time, so we know each other really well and each other’s skill sets. We apply those skills to the field, whether it’s basic man on man run blocking or sometimes in the back set area or pulling.” Of course, being a linemen carries with it a physical and mental toll. Most of the linemen have had their fair share of challenges and adversity. Ramirez missed the games against Gilroy and Christopher but was expected to play against Seaside. Toscano, who missed the team’s playoff run last year due to poor grades, made sure to start taking his classwork more seriously. And Toscano has done just that, as he said he has a current 3.0 GPA. Although tough at the time, Toscano said he knew he had to turn things around. “It was something I had to experience in order to get better,” he said. “I wasn’t very good at school—and I’m still not the greatest— but I have gotten better.” And that’s all anyone can ask for, to constantly improve in any aspect of life. Toscano, who only started playing football as a freshman, missed most of his sophomore year on the junior varsity team in 2016 due to a concussion. Despite having only a couple of years of experience under his belt, Toscano has thrived. Toscano didn’t really care for football and only tried out for the team as a freshman because McShane asked him to try out. Saldana has a similar story in that he didn’t have an affinity for football—or

GETTING HIS BLOCK ON Blaze McShane has played a key role on Hollister’s offensive line, which has sprung a ground game that accounts for the majority of the offense’s yards.

Trustor(s): MARTIN CARTER AND LALENA CARTER, HUSBAND AND WIFE AS JOINT TENANTS Recorded: 12/19/2012 as Instrument No. 2012-0012624 of Official Records in the office of the Recorder of SAN BENITO County, California; Date of Sale: 11/13/2018 at 11:30 AM Place of Sale: At the Monterey Street Entrance of the San Benito County Courthouse, 440 5th Street, Hollister, CA 95023 Amount of unpaid balance and other charges: $289,717.62 The purported property address is: 1531 PANORAMA DRIVE, HOLLISTER, CA 95023 Assessor’s Parcel No.: 057-640-004 NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-18-830178-BF. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court.
