Upgrades ahead at Hollister Airport CITY-OWNED AIRPORT GETS SET FOR NEW RUNWAYS, RESTAURANT Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

➝ Airport, 4

Scott Forstner

You can't head down to the Hollister Municipal Airport and catch a flight to Hong Kong. What you will find is a city-owned airport that's CalFire's local airbase, a home for gliders, flying lessons, helicopter rides, and a home for private aviators who fly anything from four-seater propeller-powered aircraft to classic jet fighters. The airport is also working to refit one of its buildings to lease as an onsite restaurant, which will rent for about $3,000 a month beginning in December. And it's all done without a cent of city general fund money. With the help of Airport Director Mike Chambless, the growing facility turns a yearly profit. For a local general aviation airport, the Hollister Municipal Airport is flying high. "We have amazing things happen here almost on a daily basis," Chambless said. The Hollister Municipal Airport operates from an enterprise fund, which is separate from the city’s general fund. While city sales and a portion of property taxes go into the general fund, which goes to fund police, fire, parks, and streets, the Hollister airport is funded by its users in the form of rent and an eight-cents-pergallon tax on airplane fuel.

AIRBORNE LESSON Gavilan College instructor Mike Bonillas pilots a drone Oct. 19 as three of his students observe at the Coyote Valley campus on

Bailey Road. Gavilan is now offering a six-class drone certification program to students.

Gavilan drones fly COLLEGE IS ONE OF FEW TO OFFER DRONE CERTIFICATE Scott Forstner Reporter

When 21-year-old Gavilan College student Brandon Puthoff learned about the new drone program being offered at the Coyote Valley campus north of Morgan Hill, he jumped on the opportunity right away and signed up for several classes in the six-course certificate program. “I’m hoping to make a career out of it,” said Puthoff, of Morgan Hill, who is currently enrolled in the advanced aerial photography class after completing the introductory course last semester. “The most important thing is the classes are being taught by people

who are professionals in the field.” In the same Oct. 19 class held at Gavilan’s Bailey Avenue site, 55-yearold San Jose resident Larry Gonzales was looking to parlay his previous career in software development into a new venture in the drone industry by completing the certificate program. “I’m in the process of switching careers and wanted to learn more about this industry,” said Gonzales, who holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from San Jose State University. He started with two introductory classes and is now taking advanced aerial photography and a second in drone maintenance. Next semester, Gonzales—who had been flying drones recreationally for about five years prior— plans to take two more

drone classes: Federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations as well as Sensors and Payloads. “It’s been well worthwhile,” he said. “I’ve been refocusing what I wanted to do career-wise, and this was a natural segue into the industry.” Instructor Mike Bonillas teaches the Gavilan drone program classes and runs his own “drone solutions” business called Brilliant Perspective with longtime friend, fellow instructor and business partner Anthony Olson. “We started our business four years ago as a drone photography company and realized right away that the drone industry was going to take off and became a drone solutions company,” Bonillas said. The certified drone pilot and flight instructor also teaches an afterschool introductory drone

class at Live Oak High School through Gavilan’s Career Technical Education program. “The biggest thing that people can take away is that the drone is a tool and they can add it to their repertoire of something they already do,” Bonillas added. “If they are a real estate agent or an insurance agent, a sports coach or a teacher, a biologist or somebody that does geography, search and rescue—anybody who does any stuff with the environment—it can be huge.” The possibilities are endless, and Bonillas wants to help nurture that in any person who registers for his classes at Gavilan, where about 35 students are currently enrolled in any of the six classes that allow them to pilot drones above the scenic hills on the 55 acres

of community college land. Classes, which are part of Gavilan’s Aviation Technology Department, last anywhere from three to five hours and include lecture and lab.

“This is a drone pilot’s paradise,” said Bonillas, looking around the Coyote Valley campus. “You get the sunset off the hills. We’re in a small bubble away from all air space. It’s an opportunity for people to just come out ➝ Drones, 10

Election officers serve their communities ELECTION JOBS GIVE CITIZENS A CHANCE TO HELP VOTERS Jaqueline McCool Reporter

Ellen Emma and her husband Vincent have been election officers three or four times since they’ve moved to Hollister. On Oct. 28 they attended a training session so they

could work at the polls once again on Nov. 6. Emma said the process is just something fun to be a part of. The Sunday morning training session was filled with volunteers, some returning to work at the polls others not even old enough to vote yet and volunteering for the first time. Angela Curro, assistant clerk for the Registrar

of Voters, who helped host the session, doesn’t think it’s the $175 stipend that makes election officers come back time and again to San Benito County polling places. “There’s a lot of pride in representing the community and the election process,” said Curro. The training session felt more like an amateur improv show than a three-hour information

session that prepares volunteers to oversee the country’s democratic process. Curro and her colleagues, Michael Parsons and Linda Parker, played out possible scenarios that the volunteers may encounter at the polls. “This is so you’re comfortable with what you’re going to experience,” Curro told the group. The group engaged with Curro as she asked

them pop quiz questions throughout the time. Most often throwing out one like, “Is anything trash in an election?” “No!,” the future election officers shouted back. Despite Curro’s reminders that all paper and packaging from the polls must be saved, the election officers will be using a tablet computer ➝ Poll workers, 2

to check voters’ registration status and get them checked in. This is streamlining the process that required election officers to pore through reams of paper in order to find voters’ names. The new system will allow data to go straight to the election office from the polling place.

While there has been a learning curve with volunteers who are used to the old process, Curro said all volunteers have caught on quickly after training and breakout sessions. “It adds security,” said Curro, “because the human error part of the process is reduced.” Following the group session, volunteers got a

chance to test the program for themselves and run through different scenarios that are likely to happen on election day. Unlike surrounding counties that are still hurting for election officers, Curro said participation in San Benito is always high and recruiting officers has not been a problem. This year the county will have

23 voting precints at 16 locations. Just like the light and playful atmosphere in the training session, Curro said many of the polling places in the county are known for their fun election day rituals. She said often volunteers sign up and instead of requesting to work at a polling place near their residence

they request “fun polling places.” Even though the county has enough election officers, Curro said people can still sign up to be standby officers who will be called in case someone doesn’t show up to a polling place. There should be five officers at a polling place in order to ensure workers get breaks, so Curro

asks standby workers to be available at 5:30am in case they need to be sent out. Curro is inspired by the new volunteers who are choosing to be election officers for the first time. She said, “they don’t want to listen to the news; they want to be a part of it.”

received in the mail in early October. You can also find your polling place by looking at online resources offered by the county registrar of voters and the Secretary of State.

Reporter

Hollister votes by City Council districts —and county supervisor districts—which means not every ballot is going to look the same on Nov. 6. You can’t just go to any polling place. Candidates for City Council will be on the ballot in Districts 2, 3 and 4. The citywide candidates will be mayor and a city treasurer running unopposed. For county races, the supervisors are on the ballot are District 3 and 4. All county residents will also be voting on the race for 30th Assembly. Voters must go to their assigned polling place to get the correct ballot for their district.

How can you find your assigned polling place? Your polling place will appear on your voter guide that you

Here is an interactive map of the districts in San Benito where you can type in your address and find your district: bit.ly/SanBenitoDistrictsMap Another option is typing in some personal information into the Secretary of State election site: bit.ly/CASecretaryofState The final tool on the registrar’s site allows you to type in your address to find your polling place and the local candidates and ballot measures you will be voting on: bit.ly/SanBenitoRegistrar

What happens if you don’t go to your assigned polling place? If on election day you go to the incorrect polling place, you have two options. With

the new electronic voter check-in devices, the election officers will be able to print and text you directions to your correct polling place. There you will be able to fill out the correct ballot. If you get to the incorrect polling place just before the polls close at 8pm and don’t have time to get to your correct polling place, the election officers will issue you a provisional ballot. The provisional ballot may not have your full list of candidates for your district, but after being verified it will count in the election.

Can you drop a vote-bymail ballot at any polling place? Yes, you can drop your voteby-mail ballot at any polling place. If you decide that you’d like to vote in person on the day of the election, you can go to your polling place and surrender your ballot. If the system shows that your ballot has not yet been received, you will be allowed to vote.

Angela Curro, assistant clerk for the Registrar of Voters

If a voter gets to an assigned polling place and is not registered, what are his or her options? If you aren’t registered to vote and come to find out the day of the election, you can go to the county election office and cast

a conditional ballot registering to vote the same day. The election officers at your polling place will be able to check your registration and if you don’t have time to make it to the county office you will be given a provisional ballot.

Hollister’s airport to get new runway Airport, 1

Bryce Stoepfel

“The airport gets zero money from taxes on the citizens of Hollister; the airport operates solely from its own fund,” Chambless said. “If you don’t have anything to do with the airport, you’ve never paid a penny for it.” With an operating budget of just $1 million a year, the Hollister Municipal Airport breaks even, and annually puts $100,000 into a reserve account. The airport received $18 million in federal grants in 2016 to rehabilitate its runway because it was able to put up the required $1.8 million, or 10 percent, in matching funds. Chambless said he makes sure to put aside at least $40,000 every year to match federal grants. And through several capital improvement funds, the Hollister airport is prepared for the unexpected. There’s more on the horizon. Next year’s federal grant money, $6 million, will be used to build a new 2,000-foot taxiway that will eliminate runway cross traffic, a significant safety improvement. "A lot of airports lose their grants because they don't have the matching funds to pay their portion of the necessary funds," Chambless said. "I just met with the Federal Aviation Administration, and they are very pleased with the way we operate." The mix of clients at the Hollister airport is an eclectic assortment of weekend flying enthusiasts, private businesses and public safety

TAKING OFF From Propeller powered Cessnas to fighter jets, the Hollister Municipal Airport has seen a lot since it opened in 1912. Airport Director Mike Chambless, standing in front of a 1930s Grumman G-21 Goose seaplane, manages to put $100,000 in the bank every year to help fund improvements. organizations like CalFire. Most tenants rent the 130 T-hangars for smaller Cessna airplanes for about $400 a month. Tenants for the 15 to 20 larger hangars include Aris Helicopters and Sky Dive Hollister. To help save space, T-hangars are built to accommodate the wings of a plane in front and narrow in the back to fit the rear end of the airplane. Like a puzzle or a piece in Tetris, the T-hangar configuration allows the airport to maximize its space. Most clients at Hollister airport are local flyers from as near as Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties

and as far as Oakland and beyond. Some clients fly privately owned Czechoslovakia, L-39s and L-29s fighter jets, while others stick to the smaller Cessna aircraft or gliders. Flying a fighter jet may sound cool, but it's not a hobby for average weekend flying enthusiasts. "You can get one for $300,000. Of course, as soon as you start the engine, $100 bills are coming out of the tailpipe," Chambless said. "It will cost about $1,500 just to taxi it down the runway." The Hollister Municipal Airport dates back to 1912, as a small airstrip

in a pasture in the mid1920s. It was renamed Turner Field when it was bought by Everett Turner in 1941. As the prospect of war loomed, the U.S. Navy turned it into the Navy Air Auxiliary Station, which housed up to 300 Navy personnel undergoing advanced weapons training. The Navy turned the facility over to the City of Hollister on Dec. 9, 1947. Chambless, who also runs the city's Public Works Department, runs a tight ship. With four permanent employees, duties at the Hollister airport include mowing grass, repairing runways and

maintaining lights and reflectors. Mowing at Hollister airport is an arduous task, taking up to four days of all-day work to complete in the wet season. “We’re basically property managers,” Chambless said. “I don’t get involved in the way the planes fly. We repair the buildings, fix the pavement, paint and stuff like that. But if there’s an emergency I get called, and depending on the nature of the emergency; I need to take care of it.” Within the next six years, CalFire plans to expand its Hollister base to house an additional four aircraft, including the

giant four-engined Lockheed C-130. The Hollister airport has two runways, a 4,000foot runway for takeoffs and landings during afternoons when crosswinds are high, and a longer 6,350-foot main runway. All included, the Hollister airport spans 300 acres. “We can land anything once,” Chambless said. “Different planes weigh different amounts, so if a 747 landed there, it would stop, but it would damage the runway. Our runway is built to handle C-130s full of fire retardant. We can handle a 737, all day long.”

OUR VIEW

Velazquez for mayor

T

he three-person race for mayor is crowded in Hollister—with incumbent Ignacio Velazquez competing against former County planning commissioner and city councilmember Gordon Machado and five-time candidate Keith Snow—and offers clear choices. In Hollister the mayor sits on the City Council as a member at large, with council members representing four districts. Machado served as mayor when the position was a rotational appointment among council members. Velazquez owns and operates The Vault, a banquet hall on San Benito Street in downtown Hollister. He is running for his fourth consecutive two-year term. In addition to his 12-year stint on the council, Machado also was a county planning commissioner and served on the Hazel Hawkins hospital board. He owns and operates a local business, Rustic Turtle Embroidery. Aside from his past runs for Hollister mayor, Snow is a retired engineer-foreman and frequent attendee at council meetings. Machado supports the council majority and offers little more than a promise to continue policies that follow the whim of local developers rather than charting a blueprint for sensible growth for our city. City Hall needs more open debate and more transparency, and Machado offers neither. Snow has no political experience, and prefers conspiracy theories to plans of action. Velazquez has been isolated from the council majority, often voting against the council’s plan. We see his no votes as an oftenneeded counterbalance to issues that often don’t get the scrutiny or debate they deserve. Velazquez is right when he says the city needs a new, clearly articulated vision. His vision has been at odds with the rest of the council for his entire tenure, but we believe he has the skills to work with a new council to create a genuine plan for the city’s growth,

Velazquez is right when he says the rules of how the city is run have to change. That is why we endorse his re-election, to keep an important voice for thoughtful debate, for development with a plan and for more transparency and openness in city government. He understands that the council needs to do a better job of listening to Hollister citizens on the wide range of challenges —mostly related to growth—facing the city. Too often city officials make decisions based on relationships they have formed behind closed doors. Velasquez has defended his dissenting vote on numerous projects as a lone voice for controlled growth. He wants each new development to pay for itself, to ensure that the city has the infrastructure to support new commercial and residential growth. The mayor also was a solitary voice advocating for alternatives to the mixed-use plan eventually approved for the 400 block, and was the lone voice in City Hall objecting to the sale of the property that saw the city practically give away the prime real estate for $300,000 less than the most recent appraisal. He led a citizens’ revolt against that deal that ultimately was rejected by the state Attorney General, but his mobilization of public sentiment showed he has a feel for the grassroots concerns of many Hollister citizens. Retaining Velazquez as mayor is critical to ensuring the voice of these residents continues to be heard in City Hall. The entire county will be voting on Measure G, which would boost the county sales tax to 9.25 percent, from 8.25 percent. While we are no fan of tax increases, especially ones that impact both local businesses and consumers, this vote has been rightfully characterized as the Highway 25 vote. If it is rejected, we believe the county when it says plans to widen Highway 25 would be dealt a lethal blow. The widening of our vital link to Highway 101 is essential to our economy—and the sanity of commuters. Support for Measure G is essential.

For Jews, Saturday is the Sabbath. When we greet one another on Saturday, we say these words: “Shabbat shalom, Sabbath peace.” But this past Saturday, as Jews gathered in worship at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there was no Shabbat shalom. Throughout the United States, and indeed the world, we were horrified with the news of what had happened during the most sacred time in Judaism. Each of us come to our respective sanctuaries to pray, to commune with the Holy One, to be at peace, to share life’s meaning with friends, family and our faith community. By definition, a sanctuary is a refuge, a haven, a shelter, a place of safety. But on this past Sabbath, the sanctuary of Tree of Life synagogue was not a haven and not a sukkat shalom, a shelter of peace. We’ve been told that this was the most hideous and worse attack on Jews in America since its founding. How can this be? We have well documented evidence that antiSemitism in America has been rising year after year. But we also know that when one group is attacked, all groups are attacked. When one group suffers, all groups suffer. In recent years we have seen attacks on Muslims, attacks on the undocumented and refugees, attacks on transgender and non-binary and gays and lesbians, attacks on women, attacks on indigenous people and all people of color. And then they came for Jews. I am a Jew. They came for me. They came for us. You and me, dear friends of different faiths and races and sexual and gender identities, over the years we have stood together through each of these attacks and we said in one voice, “We will overcome them!” This is not the first attack in a place of worship. In fact, on Friday an attempt was made to enter a black church in Kentucky; when that failed the killer went after two African-Americans in a nearby convenience store and murdered them instead. And last week we read of repeated bomb threats to our nation’s Democratic leaders. A week of violence. Violence begetting violence. Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Weisel, referring to the biblical story of the destruction of Sodom as a consequence of the inhabitants’ evilness, wrote: One day a righteous person, came to Sodom; he knew what Sodom was, so he came to save it from sin, from destruction. He preached to the people. "Please do not be murderers, do not be thieves. Do not be silent and do not be indifferent." He went on preaching day after day, maybe even picketing. But no one listened. He was not discouraged. He went on preaching for years. Finally someone asked him, "Rabbi, why do you do that? Don't you see it is no use?" He said, "I know it is of no use, but I must. And I will tell you why: In the beginning I thought I had to protest and to shout in order to change them. I have given up this hope. Now I know I must picket and scream and shout so that they should not change me." (Words from a Witness, pg 48)

Bipartisan bill would help specialty crops REP. PANETTA IS CO-CHAIR OF CAUCUS AND INTRODUCED LEGISLATION Staff Report

Barry Holtzclaw

Congressman Jimmy Panetta, 20th District Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Agriculture Research Caucus, has introduced the Specialty Crop Mechanization Prize Challenge Act. The bipartisan legislation incentivizes innovative agriculture technology development and deployment. The bill also encourages public-private partnerships between agriculture industry and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop mechanization technology to alleviate workforce and cultivation shortfalls. "The Specialty Crop Mechanization Prize Challenge Act is an important way to inject innovative federal investments in the central coast of California’s agriculture industry," said Panetta. "Research, development and evaluation of new specialty crop technologies can help farmers, farmworkers, processors and shippers at all levels of the supply chain." "Innovation in agricultural technology will benefit farmers and their employees, while strengthening ties between Silicon Valley and farm country," California Farm Bureau Federation President Jamie Johansson said.

OLD TECHNOLOGY Congress is considering bill to add new technologies to old standbys, like this tractor at a San Benito County farm. "Farmers of many crops and commodities would welcome new robotic or automated methods that would be practical, safe and efficient. We thank Rep. Panetta for introducing this bill and look forward to reaping the benefits of the public-private partnerships it would create."

"California fruit, vegetable and tree nut farmers face many daunting challenges, including water scarcity and labor shortages, which threaten the continued production of a safe, healthy and affordable domestic food supply," said Western Growers President & CEO Tom Nassif. "Solutions

to these problems will require the rapid acceleration of technology geared toward agriculture. We are pleased that Rep. Panetta understands the role government can play, alongside private sector investments, in speeding the development of innovations aimed at ensuring California farmers

meet the needs of a growing population with fewer resources and a smaller footprint." The Central Coast is home to a $5 billion agriculture industry, producing over 100 different specialty crops. The fruits and vegetables that drive the local economy, such as

strawberries, lettuce and spinach, are particularly labor-intensive. This legislation aims to support the development and deployment of technologies to alleviate stresses on the existing workforce and to mechanize activities where there is not a readily available workforce.

Gavilan is leader in drone education

DRONE VIEW Gavilan College instructor Mike Bonillas at the controls of his teaching drone. ➝ Drones, 1

It’s an opportunity for people to just come out and fly all types of drones.” Gavilan, which supplies the drones to its students, is one of only a handful of colleges in the state that is certified through the State Chancellor’s Office to issue a drone operator’s certificate, and those units are all transferable, Bonillas said. The program is in its third semester. “We will teach you everything you need to do to be a successful drone pilot,” Bonillas added. “You learn basic maneuvers and how to operate and just move on from there to aerial photography, advanced aerial photography, FAA rules

and regulations, repair and maintenance, and sensors and payloads.” Puthoff said what drew him to drones and the Gavilan pathway “was seeing everything from a different perspective” from high above. “Drones are the future for many different industries,” said Puthoff, who also has his FAA certification. Gonzales is in his second semester with the drone program, taking two classes each term. “They have just really given me insight into what I might want to do and where I can use my skills in the drone industry,” said Gonzales. “It’s just a new perspective from up in the air. That’s what kind of

led me into this. If someone is curious about it, they should come out and learn what it’s about.” To get Friday’s class started, Bonillas had his students create a new online drone deploy profile (which can be done on sites such as 360hangar and Pix4D) and map out their flight plans for the day. After charging the drones, the students headed outside to take flight. “It gives you a completely different viewpoint of what you’ve ever looked at before,” Bonillas said. “Here at Gavilan we have about 35 people, ages 18 to 60 and every single one of them has a different idea of what they want to do.”

SV Clean Energy signs contracts for solar storage AGREEMENT ON RENEWABLE ENERGY HELPS MONTEREY BAY COMMUNITY POWER Staff Report

Silicon Valley Clean Energy has signed two longterm agreements for the largest utility-scale, solarplus-storage projects to be built in California, for community power agencies serving Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. The two projects will provide 153 megawatts (MW) of solar and 47 MW of storage and will be developed by Electricité de France and Recurrent Energy Development Holdings, LLC. These projects will come online in 2021 and will harness enough energy to power 39,000 homes annually. Building storage in addition to solar turns the sun’s energy into a resource that can be used on demand, rather than only when the sun is shining. These projects will combine solar panels with large batteries to store energy that the sun produces during the day so that more clean energy can be discharged onto the grid during times of high energy usage in the evening. “We are excited to help California lead the transition to clean, reliable and flexible energy,” said Girish Balachandran, CEO of Silicon Valley Clean Energy. “These new renewable energy projects are a significant

RURAL ENERGY These power lines that stretch across San Benito farmland will be supplied by more renewable sources in the future. investment towards reaching our state’s carbon-free energy goals and contribute to solving the state’s grid integration problem by investing in large gridscale energy storage.” The contracts are the result of a competitive bidding process that began in September 2017. The collaboration of SVCE, which serves Santa Clara

County, with its neighboring Community Choice Energy agency, Monterey Bay Community Power, which serves San Benito County, took advantage of economies of scale for the combined four counties, allowing for more purchasing power to invest in these long-term agreements. The two agencies issued a joint RFO which

received over 80 offers for new projects that were in various stages of development. The overwhelming response represents the vast amount of interest in new renewable energy development that continues to grow. One project, developed by Recurrent, will be built in Kings County and will provide 150 megawatts

(MW) of solar capacity, plus 45 MW of storage, for a 15-year agreement. The solar project, developed by EDF, will be built in Kern County, providing 128 MW of solar capacity and 40 MW of storage and is a 20-year agreement. These projects will support approximately 840 jobs during construction. SVCE will receive

55 percent of the output, and MBCP will receive 45 percent. SVCE signed long-term power purchase agreements with each development, ensuring that customers will be receiving clean power from California renewables for years.

Zombies seen crawling through Hollister pubs More than 100 “undead” characters took over Hollister’s pub scene on Saturday, Oct. 27 during the second annual Zombie Crawl through eight downtown businesses. Promoted by ARTI-Culture, a community-based art studio in Hollister, The Zombie Apocalypse featured food, raffles, drink specials and a cash prize costume contest for the deadliest zombie of all. ARTI-Culture business partner Rolan Resendiz said the fall event helped to fund the studio’s free children’s art program, bringing in about $1,000. “We want to promote local businesses and great causes—and honestly just have a great time,” said Resendiz. Pirate Frank Sanchez, above, raises a toast to Hollister’s Halloween celebration, with Terra Mollo. Wizard of Oz characters joined the event —two flying monkeys, a wicked witch and Dorothy, in bottom photo: From left, Stacey Donnelly, Monique Jackson, Sean Donnelly and Alison Jackson. NFL alums raise money for kids SHOOTING CLAY PIGEONS IN MORGAN HILL IS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

• Sewer Line Video Inspections • All Plumbing Repair & Replacement, Indoor & Outdoor • Sewer Line Snaking/Jetting Free Estimates

Robert Ledesma

It may have been a bad morning for clay pigeons, but it was a great day for those who love shooting clay pigeons and helping kids. On Oct. 19, the NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter hosted its annual Klays for Kids Team Shoot at the Coyote Valley Sporting Clays Club in Morgan Hill. With the help of former 49ers linebacker, and Morgan Hill native Randy Kirk, the event raised more than $100,000 for children’s charities. "Our mission is caring for kids," said NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter President Eric Price, who went to camp with the 49ers as a defensive back and played with John Elway at Stanford in the early ’80s. The annual Klays for Kids Team Shoot is the NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter’s

second most significant fundraiser of the year next to its golf tournament at Stonebrae Country Club in Hayward. Every year the NFL Alumni Northern California chapter raises over $2.5 million to fund free football camps, toy drives, drug awareness programs and anti-bullying campaigns. Much of the organization’s efforts go to benefit families of active duty, disabled or fallen members of the armed forces. Despite its history of working for and with veterans, organizers say the ongoing controversy surrounding ex-49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick depressed attendance at this year's Klay for Kids Team Shoot. “They tell us, ‘We love what you're doing, but we can't support the NFL while the players sit for the anthem,’” NFL Alumni Northern California Comptroller and Administrator Russ Issacson said. "We try to explain that we're trying to raise money for kids. We fly the flag at our Redwoods headquarters, and most of the toys we raise at Christmas go to military families. It's a shame."

AIMING HIGH Morgan Hill native and former 49ers linebacker Randy Kirk helped to host the NFL Alumni fundraiser at the

Coyote Valley Sporting Clays Club in Morgan Hill.

Four active duty Marine Corps veterans were at hand as one of the teams in the shoot. Maj. Bobby Bradford from Augusta GA, Staff Sgt. Jyher Lazarre Orlando FL, Corporal Marshall Keil from Plattsmouth NE, and Lance Corporal Alex Fogarty from San Francisco formed one of the squads

in the competition. With their military training, it may be natural to assume that they would be well prepared for the competition. “We’re really good at static targets, but today we’re going to check out how we do with moving targets,” Bradford said. On what was a

picturesque morning at Coyote Valley Sporting Clays Club, deer, cattle and even a bison were present reminders of the beauty of Morgan Hill's surroundings. Kirk, a 13-year NFL veteran is also a vet on the on the shooting range. But he prefers something a little more lively. “I prefer fur and

feathers, but I’ve been shooting sporting clays for 20 years now,” Kirk, who previously hosted the Kirk Celebrity Invitational clay shoot for nine years. said. “The outdoors is a passion, and I enjoy spending time out there with my kids.” To make a donation to help area youth, visit nflalumninoca.org/donate.

942 HOL - Public Notice CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF A DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT: NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is the Lead Agency for the Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the proposed State Water Project Water Supply Amendments for Water Management and California WaterFix (proposed project). The proposed project is located within the SWP Service Area which includes the water delivery facilities of the SWP and service areas of the Public Water Agencies (PWAs) that receive water from the SWP. The proposed project would not build or modify existing SWP facilities nor change any of the PWAs’ Annual Table A amounts. The proposed project would not change the water supply delivered by the SWP as SWP water would continue to be delivered to the PWAs consistent with current Contract terms, and all regulatory requirements. Making it a good run BALERS GIVE IT THEIR ALL, BUT DENIED LEAGUE TITLES emanuel lee Sports Editor

Robert Eliason

After a 2017 season that was marred by a previous injury, Hailey Cross entered last Saturday’s Pacific Coast League Gabilan Division Championships with plenty of motivation. Even though Cross didn’t record a personal-record (PR) at Toro Park in Salinas, her time of 21 minutes, 1 second was good enough for eighth place and the fastest mark for the San Benito High girls cross country team. The Haybalers were 14 spots/ positions off from Gilroy, which totaled 66 points to win the league championship. Even though San Benito entered the race seeking another title, it had to take solace in the fact that it gave everything it had. In a sport like cross country— where pain is plentiful—giving a maximum effort should leave one’s head held high. “Obviously, we wanted to go and perform well,” Cross aid. “We got second, but we gave it our best effort.” The sentiment was similar for the boys team, as it took third behind Alisal and Pacific Grove. Senior Joseph Loredo, who is the No. 1 runner for the Balers, finished ninth overall in 17:05. It’s been an up and down season for Loredo, whose times at the beginning of the season were

slower than at any point he ran in his junior season. However, Loredo continued to put in the miles and slowly saw his times get faster as the season went on. “I was expecting to run a little faster,” he said. “When I came through (the finish line), I was a little disappointed with my time. But I gave it my best.” Cross has come full circle. After suffering a stress fracture during her sophomore season while competing during track season, the injury lingered into the following fall for her junior cross country season. She still managed to race through it and produced some strong performances, given her condition. This season, Cross was healthy from the outset, and it showed. In the league finals, Cross felt strong and made sure to stay mentally tough throughout the race. “This year I felt a lot better,” she said. “I felt I was in better shape than last year and it showed in practice and my races. I’ve loved every second of running cross country and track since I entered high school because they’re my preferred sports.” Freshman Cynthia Tena finished 12th overall in 21:26, senior Mariah Changco placed 16th in 21:40, senior Joanna Macias took 21st in 21:51 and sophomore Lauren Okamoto finished 23rd in 22:03. Cross played soccer in her freshman and sophomore years before closing that chapter in her life last year. In the league championships, Cross played a vital leadership role in trying to lead her teammates to stay with the

STRONG RUN The Balers’ Joseph Loredo and Christian Chavez finished eighth and 12th in the league finals. lead pack for as long as possible. “I felt like I had to push myself harder than I usually do,” she said. “The plan was to stay up with her (Okamoto) because we wanted a lot of us to come in together. In my head I told myself I felt good, the legs felt good and my breathing was OK.” When Loredo lined up at the start line, he felt great. Afterward, not so much. That’s a byproduct of running hard at a physical course like Toro Park. Despite not being at his best, Loredo still ran a solid time as he raced together with teammate Christian Chavez for the majority of the race.

Chavez, a junior, finished 12th overall in 17:19. A couple of teammates followed closely behind, with senior Elliot Ruiz taking 13th in 17:23, sophomore Josue Murillo Gonzalez finishing 14th in 17:25 and sophomore Anton Borges rounding out the team’s scoring by placing 18th in 17:29. “I started off pretty good and just wanted to stay with the lead pack,” Loredo said. “I knew if I could stay with them, it would be a pretty good run.” However, Loredo started to suffer at around the 2-mile mark, as a couple of runners passed him on the back side of the course.

Still, Loredo maintained a steely focus to finish with his third best time ever at Toro Park. “Christian and I were working together in trying to stay with the Alisal people, knowing they were the team that would be there at the end,” Loredo said. Cross and Loredo have been stalwarts for the last couple of years, and they know they’ll be leaving the program in good hands, er, legs. On the girls team, freshmen Tena has dazzled at times this season, while Gonzalez and Borges are sophomores who have the potential to finish among the top 10 individuals in next year’s league finals.

Behind Arispe, Anzar hits milestone HAWKS FINISH WITH WINNING RECORD AND BEST LEAGUE FINISH EVER emanuel lee Sports Editor

ability to make a cut on a moment’s notice, but he also broke a lot of tackles, which was an underrated part of his game. “He’s got a real motor on him and he keeps his legs moving,” Kosmicki said. Anzar has also been buoyed by the play of Eric Chavarria, Jose Arriaga, Tony Aguilar and senior Logan Ledon, who plays the other cornerback position and like Arispe had a couple of interceptions and forced several incompletions. Ledon, who also plays receiver, caught a 40-yard touchdown pass just before halftime in a win over Woodside Priory in the penultimate game of the season.

Talented corners

Kosmicki said few teams in the 8-man league could boast the talent in the defensive backfield that Anzar had with Arispe and Ledon. Arriaga, a junior defensive end who is in his first year of playing football, also has the proverbial motor that never stops. “Jose has been putting a lot of pressure on the quarterback,” Kosmicki said. “He along with Tony Aguilar—who has been one of our best defensive players—have really made a big impact for us.” As has Chavarria, a running back and linebacker who was vital to the run game with his ability to block and make strong runs. Defensively, Chavarria was always around the ball, a testament to his athleticism and instincts. Arispe didn’t start playing football until he was 14 with the Hollister Rebels Pop Warner team. He showed flashes of brilliance then, but the auspicious start to his football career didn’t last long. Arispe’s freshman season was cut short after he was declared academically ineligible, something that

Greg Arispe was angry. The Anzar High senior had just allowed a completion of over 20 yards in the first half in a game against Pinewood on Sept. 28, perhaps the longest ball caught against him all season. A couple of plays before that, Arispe felt like he should’ve had an interception. Combine that with the fact that Pinewood wasn’t shying away from throwing his way early on—this despite Arispe pretty much shutting down any receiver he was on—put Arispe in a slightly agitated state. So what happened next? With Pinewood trailing by a couple of scores and marching down the field, they elected to throw to the receiver who Arispe was covering. Bad move. Arispe intercepted the pass and ran it back 40 yards deep into Pinewood territory. A couple of plays later, Arispe rushed for a touchdown to give the Hawks a lead they would never come close to relinquishing. The sequence of events—Arispe making an impact both offensively and defensively— highlighted what Arispe has been doing all season. “Against Pinewood I was frustrated before that interception because their QB kept throwing it toward me, and there were three passes where I could’ve intercepted each one of them,” Arispe said. “But I misread them. On the interception, I was watching the QB all the way and remember him throwing the ball in my area. I picked it off and it pretty much iced the game.” Arispe is a major reason why Anzar recently completed its best season in program history. The

Hawks finished the season at 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the 8-man Pacific Coast League, the first time in school history the team has posted a winning record without the aid of a forfeit victory (which happened in 2013). “I know Anzar has had a lot of good players, but I just cannot imagine anyone has been as good as Greg,” Hawks coach Kollin Kosmicki said. “I’m thankful I’ve been able to coach him these last two years. He’s really dedicated and one of those leaders in the weight room. He just loves football.” And loves to compete. Arispe suffered a bad ankle sprain in the first game of the season, plaguing him and the team, which got off to a 1-3 start. The slow start can be chalked up to Anzar playing tough competition and a rash of injuries that slowed the Hawks down. However, once Arispe healed up, Anzar found its stride. In the team’s fifth game of the season against Crystal Springs Uplands of Hillsborough, the Hawks trailed by 14 points at halftime before unleashing a comeback that turned around its season. Anzar went on to win that game and lost just once the rest of the way, a 54-26 decision to Cornerstone Christian of Antioch, the league champion and a formidable team that finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record. “They came out (after halftime of the Crystal Springs game) and responded, and the train hasn’t stopped since then,” Kosmicki said. It’s no coincidence that the Hawks started finding their rhythm when Arispe was inserted as the starting quarterback for the second half of the Crystal Springs contest. Dynamic, shifty and ultra athletic, Arispe baffled the opposition on the read option. Arispe eluded would-be tacklers with his

history. The multi-position talent made a huge impact on both sides of the ball.

has served as a wakeup call going forward. “I got kicked off the team for not making grades, and I wasn’t taking anything seriously,” he said. “Not being able to play football, I realized how much I loved the game and needed to play. So from then I focused on keeping my grades up.” However, success still eluded Arispe during his sophomore season. Relegated to a wingback role where he was mostly used as a blocker, Arispe felt like his skills weren’t being used. But that all changed with the arrival of Kosmicki before the start of the 2017 season. “Coach Kollin saw my skills right away and put

them to use,” Arispe said. “Everything changed for me and the team when he got here.” In addition to all of Arispe’s aforementioned skills, Kosmicki said the standout player also possesses the intangibles that are necessary for success. “He has the ‘it’ factor,” Kosmicki said. “Aside from the superior physical things like his speed and quickness, he’s a really smart player and brings as much passion to the game I’ve seen. You combine that with his game-breaking ability, and that’s why he can do some amazing things.” An example of that came in the game against Woodside Priory, in which Arispe looked like he was

going to be caught in the back field for a big loss only to slip out of numerous tackles en route to a huge gain. Just when it looked like Arispe was merely dancing—football lingo for making unnecessary moves in place of going forward—Arispe ended up busting off a huge gain. “My initial instinct on that play was unfolding was to get sort of frustrated because the play was going nowhere,” Kosmicki said. “All of a sudden he slips out of a tackle, does a spin move and goes the other way. “ Kosmicki was left in amazement, knowing few players in the 8-man league could pull off such a move.

Pediatrix will provide highly trained hospital-based pediatric hospitalists to assist with high-risk newborn deliveries, help determine when a newborn requires transport out for critical care, and support the care of well newborns in the nursery, as well as inpatient children and teens. Pediatric hospitalists will also be on hand to provide onsite consultative services to attending medical staff and ER physicians and to help stabilize patients in emergency situations. Good Samaritan Hospital’s neonatology group has, for many years, been assisting HHMH with the stabilization and transport of high-risk newborns, and supported physicians with telephone consultations. “We have a long-standing relationship with Hazel Hawkins, built over the last 10 to 15 years, and this is the next step,” said Dr. Richard Powers, MEDNAX affiliated neonatologist and Chief of Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital. HHMH pursued a partnership with Pediatrix due to the need for full-time pediatric support at the hospital. Currently most pediatricians in Hollister have established office-based practices and cannot staff the hospital. “Pediatrix has a history and national reputation for providing excellent care to newborns and children,” said Ken Underwood, HHMH CEO. “This partnership will bring experience and vital support to our top-tier Women’s Center and ER, and to children admitted to Hazel Hawkins Hospital”

The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000007731086. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
