Navy practice bombs targeted San Benito DIVE BOMBERS’ PRACTICE RUNS OFF SANTA ANA VALLEY ROAD HELPED WW II Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
Bryce Stoepfel
Grassy pasture land off Santa Ana Valley Road east of Hollister played a part in winning World War II. The Hollister 12th Naval District Target Number Five served as a training ground for U.S. Navy aviators to hone their skills in dive bombers from the summer of 1943 to the end of the war. Naval historians say the experience gained at Target Number Five played a role in the Allied victory over the Imperial Japanese Navy at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. The history of Target Number Five was directly tied to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station Hollister, now the Hollister Municipal Airport. Established on June 26, 1943, Naval Auxiliary Air Station Hollister served as a training ground for naval aviators due to its proximity to Monterey Bay, which was used for torpedo practice. In June 1943, the Navy leased land on Santa Ana Valley Road from Mr. and Mrs. Paul J Hudner, which would become Target Number Five, according to a 2001 site survey report compiled by the Army Corps of Engineers. Navy archive records describe Target Number Five as consisting of three targets, a 520-by-50-foot
TRAINING BOMB TARGET This serene grazing land east Hollister was the site of U.S. Navy practice bombing 75 years ago. “cruiser,” a 180-by-20-foot “submarine,” and a 100foot diameter circle with a 10-foot center. Instead of building replicas of the cruiser and submarine, the targets were 4-feetwide lines of crushed white dolomite. The bombs used at Target Number Five were like the Mk 15 Mod 3 Practice Bomb found in September embedded in the dirt of the city dog park at the airport. Each practice bomb had a cylindrical body, a rounded nose and guide fins in the rear. Filled with wet sand, the bomb weighed 100 pounds. Rather than being armed with high explosives, the
practice bombs filled with black powder and phosphorus produced a flash and white smoke to help indicate if the bombs hit their target. The Hollister 12th Naval District Target Number Five was one of 30 rocket and bombing test sites used by the U.S. Navy in California and Nevada, which helped Navy personnel hone their targeting skills and test new ordinance. The U.S. Navy dive bombers, particularly the CB2C Helldiver and the Douglas SBD Dauntless, played pivotal roles in the Pacific Theater in WWII, according to the Navy. Dive bombers dive
at their target at a steep angle, up to a near vertical 80 degrees, to precisely land a bomb or torpedo on target. At the Battle of Midway in June 1942, dive bombers from the USS Yorktown and USS Enterprise scored debilitating hits that sank four Japanese carriers, effectively turning the tide in the Pacific Theater. Later in the war at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, dive bombers, including crews who trained at Naval Auxiliary Air Station Hollister, struck and sunk several Japanese battleships, including the Yamatoclass Musashi battleship. At the end of the Navy's
lease on the San Benito County property, the U.S, government paid the Hudners $700 to restore bomb craters and removed a 16-ton pile of bomb fragments. On Aug. 23, 2001, the Army Corp of Engineers, while performing a site survey, met with property owner Tom Grant; Tom Stirewalt, who leased the land at the time; and John Trebino, who grew up in the area. Stirewalt told the Army Corps he recalled watching the bombings with his cousin while sitting on a bend in Lone Tree Road. Stirewalt also remembered soldiers sentenced to pick up bomb fragments on
weekends as punishment for going AWOL. Trebino also called watching the bombings as a child, and to his recollection, the Navy did not use high explosives on Target Number Five. At the time of the interview, Trebino retrieved a 13-lb. broken MK practice bomb. Today Target Number Five serves as pasture land near Lightning Tree Ranch on Santa Ana Valley Road. Now the home of cattle, the site seems like an unlikely place that played a role in history. Like the soldiers who served in WWII, it has done its service, and now rest peacefully.

Group presents a plan for job growth INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE OFFERS IDEAS TO BRING NEW BUSINESS TO SAN BENITO COUNTY Jaqueline McCool Reporter
Just over a year ago, Richard Goozh, CFO of San Benito-based biotech company Teknova, stood up at a Hollister City Council meeting and declared the formation of the Independent Committee for San Benito County Job Growth. Goozh invited members of the community to join
him in addressing what he believes is a lack of job and business growth in the county. Now the committee has been formed, and Goozh has presented preliminary recommendations to San Benito County and Hollister city officials. The presentation at the Oct. 15 council meeting included six recommendations: welcome new businesses to the county; create shared goals for growth among agencies; aim for 3 percent annual residential growth and 6-10 percent annual job growth; hire a marketing and intake director for the Economic Development Committee; improve city
and county partnerships to reduce service costs for businesses; and invest in infrastructure. The council’s reception of the presentation wasn’t quite what Goozh hoped it would be. However, he will continue to give the preliminary recommendations to the San Benito County Supervisors and come back sometime between January and March 2019 with the committee’s final recommendations. Goozh told the Free Lance he had wanted to start the committee in an effort to get job growth to match residential growth in the county. He said, “Why is it commuters want to move to the
county but businesses don’t?” When creating the group, Goozh said he wanted the committee to find ways to bring more businesses like Teknova to the county. “The greater the community of like-minded businesses, the greater the benefits for every member of that community,” said Goozh. During the presentation, Goozh included graphs showing the intersection of job growth, traffic and government funds. According to Goozh’s graphs, when jobs increase in the county, traffic will be alleviated and more money will be able to be put
back into county and city government. “Job growth solves a lot of other problems,” said Goozh. Goozh said current job growth in the county is about 1 percent annually, but his projections that maximize infrastructure and monetary benefits come from a 6 percent job growth rate. “It’s a very aggressive goal,” said Goozh. “ I don’t want to understate that, but it’s not out of reach. “If there’s more money in the community, then there’s more money for the community.” While members of the committee act
independently from the organizations they are a part of, the committee includes many prominent community members. Some of the members include District 4 council candidate Marty Richman, current District 4 Councilmember Jim Gillio, City Manager Bill Avera, former District 1 councilmember Ray Friend, mayoral candidate and former councilmember Gordon Machado, former councilmember and lobbyist Victor Gomez and County Supervisor Mark Medina. Goozh was expected to present the plan at the Nov. 6 board of supervisors meeting.
Students send gifts to GIs abroad VOLUNTEERS SEND BOXES AND LETTERS EACH MONTH TO SOLDIERS OVERSEAS By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Every month has a Veterans Day for soldiers stationed overseas, thanks to the generosity of volunteers for a national non-profit and students from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister. Volunteers with Operation Interdependence prepare care packages that include cards, snacks, toiletries, candy and handwritten letters from kids, which are sent to GIs every month. The organization reports
that 200-250 large boxes containing the care packages are shipped overseas to combat zones and military bases. Gilroy volunteer Susan Mister said, “Gilroy has been able to ship 20 boxes monthly, with 25 quart-size bags in each box.” The small team of volunteers meets every week for packaging and letter writing, she said. Gilroy has been the second-biggest contributor to the organization for the past five year, led by students at Christopher High School. The students collect products for the packages and have written more than 1,000 letter, Mister said. Gilroy real estate manager Mark Sanchez provides office space every week for
about a dozen volunteers for the project, she said. St. Catherine’s School in Morgan Hill has provided letters, and the Hollister 4-H has donated products and money. The Memorial Day car show at Christmas Hill Park is a local fundraiser as well. Mister said that while the group does not know the details of the soldiers who receive the packages, “a lot of our boxes have gone to Kandahar in Afghanistan.” “Each of our letters is handwritten and speaks to gratefulness for their service and sacrifice and talks about things happening here at home,” said Mister. “The students will write about sports, music, art, their siblings, girlfriends, boyfriends—it's all uplifting.”
THANK YOU These soldiers were happy to receive gift boxes sent from local volunteers.
The Department of Defense does not reveal details of their unit or location.
“Thank you all so much for the caring words, the cards and the gifts you all sent in the packages,” said Karon Carley, president of
Operation Interdependence. “Each card is read by a sailor, soldier, marine or airman. I can speak for them when I say that your words
of encouragement bolster our spirit as we complete our daily missions.” For more information, visit www.oidelivers.org

OPINION GUEST OPINION MEGHAN MCCARTY CARINO
How all those propositions got started
OPINION PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, OCT.8, 1954
Veterans Day Proclamation
W
hereas, it has long been our custom to commemorate Nov. 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by rededicating ourselves to the cause of peace; and Whereas, in the intervening years the United States has been involved in two other great military conflicts, which have added millions of veterans living and dead to the honor rolls of this Nation; and Whereas, the Congress passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926 calling for the observance of Nov. 11 with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938 that the 11th of November should be a legal holiday and should known as Armistice Day and Whereas, in order to expand the significance of that commemoration and in order that a grateful nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this nation, the Congress, by an act approved June 1, 1954, changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day; Now, therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, Nov. 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. On that day, let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their
efforts shall not have been in vain. I also direct the appropriate officials of the government to arrange for the display of the flag of the United States all public buildings on Veterans Day. In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose… Signed, Oct. 8, 1954. Armistice Day, 1926 and 1938
Whereas, the 11th of November 1918 marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary and far-reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas, the legislatures of 27 of our states have already declared Nov. 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Nov. 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples… . On May 13, 1938, Congress made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be known as Armistice Day.

California expects voters to make a lot of big choices. We elect representatives, the governor and judges, but we also decide the future of the gas tax, how dialysis clinics are paid and if egg-laying chickens need more space. Most of us have a hard enough time deciding what to have for dinner on a nightly basis. How is the average person supposed to judge the pros and cons of employment law for ambulance workers (also on the ballot)? Historian William Deverell at the University of Southern California said the system we see in action today might be unrecognizable to those who fought for it more than a century ago. It “has grown quite unwieldy and crude in ways that have perverted the initial vision,” he said. California wasn’t the first state to embrace initiatives, but Deverell said we did it on a scale that made us directdemocracy trailblazers. The movement was born in the wake of the gilded age, when a small cadre of superwealthy industrialists pulled all the political strings. “In California, the force that everyone points to is the railroad,” said Deverell. “It’s a perfect enemy in many respects. It’s distant, it’s powerful, it’s rich and owns all the land.” The railroad, it turns out, also owned California politicians—that is, until Hiram Johnson came along. At the turn of the century, Johnson achieved renown as an attorney in San Francisco fighting graft and political corruption. “He had gotten a reputation as a no-nonsense, honest political fighter for good,” said Deverell. In 1910 Johnson ran for governor on a platform of opposition to special interests like the railroad. “And his race then is sculpted into a kind of Goliath vs. David phenomenon where Hiram Johnson is cast as the David going after the corporate behemoths, the Goliath, that was the Southern Pacific,” said Deverell. Like the Old Testament hero, Johnson was successful. He won the governor’s seat and ushered in a set of constitutional amendments to wrest power from moneyed interests and put it in the hands of the people with the initiative process. It all sounds very righteous, but according to journalist Joe Mathews, who wrote the book “California Crackup: How Reform Broke the Golden State and How We Can Fix It,” Johnson was no saint. “He was loud, bombastic, angry, prone to dark moods, personalized disputes,” said Mathews. “He was a fighter and he saw in initiatives not some way to bring the people into the process,” said Mathews. “He saw them as tools for fights. He sold it as, ‘It’ll be like a gun in a man’s hand.’” One of Johnson’s primary targets was his own father, a state legislator who’d made his career as just the kind of politician Johnson railed against. “His father campaigned against him and said, ‘Don’t elect this guy,’” said Mathews. So when Johnson took power and it came time to craft the initiative process, he made it extra difficult for the Legislature to fiddle with. Once an initiative passes in California, the Legislature can’t touch it, even to make simple, logical improvements, unless the initiative specifically stipulates they can. Otherwise, any change has to go back through the process for a vote by the people. “They kept the initiative process totally separate from the legislative process, which his father and his friends controlled,” said Mathews. He thinks that part of what explains California’s extreme, inflexible direct democracy systems is Johnson’s “daddy issues.” In fact, three of the initiatives on this year’s ballot were revisions or reactions to previously passed ones. The Mount Madonna Park Master Plan approved by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 2017 is being revised to accommodate new park forest property and reduce overall fire hazards. The County Parks Department recently acquired additional property adjacent to the areas of the 4,605-acre park that are currently open to the public. The county said this month that there is interest in opening these new areas to park users, and released a 196-page draft plan for protecting the forests. The park, located off Hecker Pass Road, comprises primarily redwood forest and sits atop the Santa Cruz Mountain range. It is a popular destination for camping, hiking, horseback riding, archery and picnicking. The plan attempts to address growing concern about wildfire dangers in the park, report county officials. In more recent years, Mt. Madonna Park has been subject to forest outbreaks of tree diseases and falling trees in both highuse recreational areas and low-use backcountry areas. These events have resulted in large-scale tree removal in high-use portions of the park. Park forests are also faced with additional threats that increase tree stress, including pest and disease infestations, invasive species establishment and wildfires.

Removal of invasive species, especially blue gum, which reduces biological diversity by displacing and suppressing native tree growth and contributes to increased fire hazard due to its physical characteristics (e.g., peeling bark, volatile organic compounds, high fuel loading). The removal plan includes some use of herbicides. Removal of eucalyptus trees within the three identified large stands. Proactive treatment of infestations of insects and pathogens, which remain a threat to the park’s forests. Selective thinning of selected stands of second-growth redwoods, allowing for a reduction in the number of trees per acre while promoting the growth of retained trees and their canopy. Reintroduction of
prescribed fires into the park. Prescribed fire is considered a highly effective and inexpensive tool for reducing fuel loads and treating residual woody material generated during forest treatments. When used to reduce fuel loads or treat woody material, prescribed fire can help reduce the potential for catastrophic wildland fires. Other benefits of prescribed fire include accelerated nutrient cycling, reduction of brood material for pests and pathogens, reduced competition from underbrush, and reduced risk of pathogen spread via material transport. The county is seeking public comment on the plan. The comment period on the draft documents will be open until Nov. 19. For more information, visit the County Parks website: https://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/ PlansProjects/introduction/Pages/plans-projects-introduction.aspx

Staff report
Hollister Police arrested a man Oct. 22 for drunkenly crashing his vehicle into a gas and water line after angrily shouting at officers at the county jail while they were booking his father for an earlier offense, according to authorities. About 10:45pm Oct. 22, Hollister Police Officer Miguel Masso responded to a report that Francisco Zendejas had violated a restraining order on the 300 block of Paul Drive in south Hollister, according to a Hollister Police Department press release. Police had been called to the residence several times over the previous week for the same reason. Zendejas “has a very long history of disturbing neighbors,” police said. He currently has a court order prohibiting him from being within 100 yards of his neighbor’s home; thus he is prohibited from being at the residence on Paul Drive. When Zendejas’

and registering your cell phone with CodeRED to receive up-to-the-minute emergency information. If a larger earthquake were to happen, the county would be able to employ several emergency response measures to get information to the public, including making reverse 911 calls and reaching out to media. O’Neill told the Free Lance these measures would only be employed if the situation were catastrophic. “Several active and potentially active earthquake faults are located within San Benito County including the San Andreas and Hayward/Calaveras Faults as well as fault complexes and branches of these major faults,” according to the San Benito County emergency response plan. “Under severe ground acceleration (shaking) and liquefaction, Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis reveals that in San

Scared of the next “big one?” San Benito County officials have a plan in place in case the next major earthquake strikes, and they ask that you do the same. After a string of small earthquakes in the early morning hours of Nov. 2, the San Benito County Office of Emergency Services emailed a press release detailing the quakes and how residents should prepare. The release said eight earthquakes occurred between 5:58 am and 10:02 am. The magnitude ranged from 4.1 early in the morning to 3.0, and there were no reports
of injuries or damaged property. “According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the probability that any earthquake will be followed within three days by a large earthquake nearby is only about 6 percent,” read the press release. However, Kevin O’Neill, emergency services manager for San Benito County, said the county was using this as an opportunity to inform the public on how to prepare in the event of a more damaging quake. The county recommended securing large furniture items, placing breakables on bottom shelves or on the floor, maintaining an emergency supply of non-perishable food, keeping an emergency supply of potable water and other emergency supplies, creating an emergency plan with your family, organizing and protecting important documents,

O’Neill said the more people are prepared for the next big earthquake, the more the county can help residents. “The preparedness piece is so
important,” O’Neill added. “That’s what helps us help the people in need.” Ready.gov has more information on how to prepare for disasters.

PROTECTING NEIGHBORHOODS FROM THE THREAT OF WILDFIRES
With new wildfires threatening our local communities, PG&E is partnering with our customers in high fire-threat areas to accelerate and expand our vegetation management work. We will be examining and addressing critical vegetation across 7,100 miles of power lines.
In order to keep our neighborhoods safe, PG&E may need to trim or remove vegetation on or near properties in high firethreat areas. PG&E’s action plan includes the following steps: ■ Step 1: Our safety inspectors will be in your neighborhood to determine what vegetation may need to be trimmed or removed. ■ Step 2: If needed, we will mark trees that need to be addressed and contact you to discuss the results of the safety inspection. ■ Step 3: We will perform safety work shortly after the inspection. ■ Step 4: We will plan to begin wood debris removal within a few weeks after completion of the safety work (unless you would like to keep it).
KEEPING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFE
You can help keep your family and neighbors safe by maintaining defensible space around your home and property. We recommend you regularly trim bushes and trees, remove any dry or dead vegetation and be sure to leave space between trees and plants.
Now, and in the years ahead, we must all work together to be better prepared for wildfires.
To learn if you live in a high fire-threat area and what you can do to keep your community safe, please visit pge.com/wildfiresafety.

The 2018 wildfire season is already one of the worst on record — with more than 1.5 million acres burned and more than 1,000 homes lost. And it’s not over yet. With the wildfire risk increasing at an alarming pace, the 2018 wildfire activity is on track to exceed the 2017 wildfire season, which was the most destructive on record.

GRIDIRON Kristian Espinoza (20), Isaac Gonzalez (79), Stevan Navarro (23) and Ryan Clink (34) engage in pre-game warm-ups in the matchup against Palma last week. Despite a 49-28 loss, Hollister qualified to play in the Central Coast Section playoffs on Friday against Salinas.

Balers face Salinas HAYBALERS WILL HAVE TO BEAT SALINAS AGAIN TO MOVE
ON IN CCS bryce stoepfel Staff Reporter
Chris Mora
Last Thursday night at the Salinas Sports Complex, the Hollister Haybalers’ bid for a share of a Pacific Coast League Gabilan Division championship fell short following a drubbing from the Palma Chieftains, 49-28. But the season isn’t over yet, and on Saturday in Salinas, against a familiar foe, the Salinas High Cowboys, the Haybalers (6-4, 5-2) have a shot to make a deep run in the CCS Open Division I playoffs. “We’re a little banged up on the offensive line, so we really need to take a look at that in terms of who’s playing,” Haybalers coach Bryan Smith said. “On Monday, we’re going to tackle it like any other Monday, except it might mean that the seniors only have one game left.” The Haybalers have surged after starting the season 1-3. Their five-game win streak was punctuated with a 35-28 victory over the same Salinas (7-3, 6-1) team that handed Palma (9-1, 6-1) its only loss on the year, where Navarro rushed for 284 yards with three touchdowns on 22 carries.
“We played our best football (the previous) week (against Salinas),” Smith said. If the Haybalers expect another victory over the Cowboys, another dominating performance from Navarro would undoubtedly help. Another path to success would be stopping— or at least slowing down—Salinas quarterback Carl Richardson who has completed 217 of 297 passes for 2,927 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. Salinas and San Benito’s offenses are dramatically different in style of play. Overall, Salinas has scored 326 points on the year, with 3,040 yards through the air and 1,543 on the ground. San Benito scored almost 100 fewer points on the year (244) with 1,740 yards rushing and 514 yards passing. Sophomore quarterback Michael McShane starts in place of injured senior Slade Wilson, and while the experience will help the young quarterback going forward, the lack of a consistent passing game leaves the Haybalers offense mostly one-dimensional. “We’re playing with a sophomore quarterback (McShane), and he’s done a really solid job of leading in a more mature way than a sophomore (normally would),” Smith said. Navarro isn’t intimidated by a defense stacked to defend the run, and with 996 yards rushing on the year with 12 rushing touchdowns and four receiving
HERE WE COME The Balers’ Ivan Benitez and Stevan Navarro prepare to meet the Palma captains prior to last week’s regular-season finale. Hollister plays Salinas on Friday in the opening round of the CCS playoffs. touchdowns, Navarro has been the engine that drives San Benito’s offense. “I take a lot of pride in that— just give me the ball,” Navarro said. While the Haybalers didn’t do much to stop Palma quarterback Grant Sergent, who went 16 of 20 for 363 yards and four touchdowns, San Benito junior Marcus Aranda came away with Sergent’s only interception of the year in the third quarter.
Aranda leads the Haybalers with four interceptions this season. “Marcus has played well for us all year, and he’s really improved in the last few weeks,” Smith said. Ironically, the game was considered a home game for the Haybalers despite the fact it was played on Palma’s home turf at the Salinas Sports Complex. The home/away game was the last in a season where San Benito was made nomadic because of
construction on a new football stadium on campus. For the Balers to advance in the playoffs, they’ll need to be at their best against a Salinas team chomping at the bit to exact payback. Hollister was the only team to beat the Cowboys in league play, 35-28 on Oct. 26. Salinas earned the league championship with a number of stirring performances, coming up with a four-point win over Aptos and a 10-point victory over Palma.

talented and hard working, the formula needed for running success. To get a sense of how motivated the team is, look no further than Clark and Velasquez, who are still running with the CCS qualifiers at practice even though their season is over. “Arturo and Max are still coming to practice and getting an early start putting in their fall and winter miles,” Parra said. “They don’t like that they didn’t make it to CCS, and they have an attitude to keep training. Inheriting essentially the same core group of players from a team that went 2-14 last year, the Hawks turned things around in a big way in 2018, finishing 16-13, including a win in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs on Oct. 27. Even though Anzar saw its season end three days later in a three-set loss to Notre Dame-Salinas, nothing could put a damper on what the team accomplished this season. “I think we’re all pretty stoked for the year we had and the effort we all put in,” Barrios said. “I felt the girls were super productive and made a lot of improvement from last season.” Barrios pointed to the play of Kiauna Oliver, Abigail Lindholm, Ebony Telford, Maya Dizon and
Robert Eliason
The Anzar High boys cross country team didn’t pick a great time to have a subpar performance—on the day of the Pacific Coast Athletic League Championships on Oct. 27. Expecting to finish third in the team rankings in the Santa Lucia Division—which carries an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section Championships—the Hawks finished in fourth. Hawks coach Izzy Parra chalked the result up to youth, noting the team’s relative lack of race experience. However, Anzar still qualified three individuals to the section championships—which take place on Saturday at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont—including junior Alex Avila and sophomores Alejandro Rosillo and Damian Gomez. Anzar’s top five runners feature four sophomores and a junior, meaning the best has yet to come. “The good thing is all the guys are young,” Parra said. “We’ll be back next year and the year after that. It’s all a learning experience.” Avila took eighth overall in 18 minutes, 43 seconds at the 3.0-mile course at Toro Park in Salinas. Rosillo, the team’s No. 1 runner, finished in 12th in 19:14 and Gomez placed 16th in 19:45. The team’s Nos. 4 and 5 scoring runners included Max Clark (17th in 19:48) and Arturo
Velasquez (19th in 20:11). Parra said even though the team had a disappointing finish in the league finals, the team’s three runners who will run on Saturday—and in particular, Avila and Rosillo— have a shot at redemption in the section championships. “Luckily, they get another crack at it in CCS,” Parra said. “We ran at Crystal earlier in the year, so they know the course.” At the ultra-competitive Crystal Springs Invitational on Oct. 6, Avila finished in 17:50.3, Rosillo in 18:51.5 and Gomez in 19:35.1. Parra expects all three runners to PR, especially Gomez, who has been resilient in running through pain this season. “Damian has stepped up a lot this year dealing with a knee injury during the race (in the league finals),” Parra said. “That didn’t stop him from grinding it out. I expect him to have another big race, and I think he has the highest ceiling for improvement out of all of them since he hasn’t been 100 percent. He’s a speedster with a good kick at the end of races.” Clark has dropped some serious minutes since the start of his freshman year in 2017, when he started the season with a time of 28 minutes in the squad’s pre-season time trial. His 19:48 in the league finals meant Clark has dropped over eight minutes off his best mark over three miles. Parra can’t wait to see how Avila and Rosillo respond at Crystal Springs. The team’s top two runners are motivated,
STRONG TRIO Alex Avila, Alejandro Rosillo and Damian Gomez qualified as individuals
to compete in the Central Coast Section Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Rachel Cardini for being tremendous impact players. Oliver, a sophomore outside hitter, has a high hitting percentage and unleashed consistent swings. “Kiauna can swing and hit it from the 10-foot line, which is crazy fun to see,” Barrios said. “It’s fun watching her, and she has legitimate college potential.” Lindholm, a junior middle blocker, epitomized the players’ attitude in that she was eager to improve, take in instruction from the coaches and transfer that to the court. “She was super and everything you want in a player,” Barrios said. “She’s super coachable, listens to feedback and is super eager to fix the little mistakes common to all players. That was a big joy being able to coach a team that has a lot of players like that. She had a really good swing and put up a

big block.” Dizon, a junior setter, displayed excellent skills in moving the ball, mixing up the offensive distribution and pushing hitters to do something out of their comfort zone, Barrios said. Dizon possesses a technical acumen and knowledge of the game that propelled the Hawks to take their game to another level. Telford, a junior outside hitter, possesses tremendous athleticism and mental toughness. “Ebony is great in the mental aspect of the game, which is super crucial and something we stress,” Barrios said. “She’s the most happiest player you’ll ever meet. She can slam the ball and is super positive even in tough times. She’s the emotional backbone for the girls to lean on when times get super hectic out there. The girls can
look to her and say, ‘Hey, I need your help,’ because she has a great presence about her.” Cardini, a senior outside hitter/right side, provides vocal support on the court and plays multiple positions, a testament to her versatility. Cardini played on the outside and right side for half the season, but midway through she also played middle blocker. In addition, Cardini played libero in the team’s season-finale against Notre Dame because her passing was superb. “She’s super verbal on the court, and we need that when times are quiet,” Barrios said. Barrios credited junior varsity coach Megan Campos—a former Anzar High standout—and athletic director Mike McKinney for providing the support necessary for the team to have a bounce back season.

OBITUARIES LORI ROSS
ROBERT “BOB” LEHOCKY
JUNE 28, 1954-OCTOBER 13, 2018
L
November, 10, 1940 - October, 26, 2018
ori Ross, a woman cherished by family, friends, colleagues, students, and parents, lost her short and aggressive battle with breast cancer on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
Lori, a native of New York, moved to Hillsborough, CA when she was in 9th grade with her parents, Bruce and Roberta and her three siblings. She attended Burlingame High School, before she pursued her dream of being a teacher, receiving her BA and Masters in Early Childhood Development at Fresno State University. During her Summers, she worked at Girl Scout Camp as Camp Director, finetuning leadership skills and making lifelong friends, including her partner of 38 years Judy (aka: Dee-d) Pick. As an adult, Lori settled in San Jose, CA where she built her family and taught at Los Paseos Elementary School. Lori’s life is best defined by her three passions: motherhood, her role as a teacher, and basketball. Lori’s greatest joy was being a mother, and recently, a grandmother. Giving birth to daughter, Jacie, co-parenting with Judy, and opening their doors and hearts to foster-daughter, Lyndsey, created many happy family memories and adventures. Their family increased to include twin grandchildren, Ava and Anthony (2), who live with their parents, Lyndsey and AJ in Arizona For 38 years Lori lived her dream as an outstanding and beloved lead teacher. Morgan Hill Unified School District named her “Teacher of the Year” in 2015, the year she retired. She was admired for her ability to diffuse difficult situations with kind directness and a sense of humor. Her genuine care for all students was evident and impacted countless lives. Anyone who knew petite Lori has to chuckle over her obsession with basketball. Whether coaching third through sixth graders on the school grounds or following her favorite teams (Stanford Women’s and the WNBA) around the country, everyone knew that the month of March was “sacred time” devoted to her passion. Lori’s retirement, though too short, was filled with adventures and activities with Judy, her daughters, her teacher colleagues, and her Girl Scout friends. On any day, Lori was playing games, bowling, going to movies, attending book group, traveling, dining, cruising with Judy and friends, cuddling grandbabies, and just making the most of every day. In every gathering, Lori was the heart, the laughter, the storyteller, the organizer, and the magnet for great love and friendship. Lori’s impact on the lives of all she knew was significant, and she will be sorely missed! Lori is survived by her spouse, Judy Pick; daughters, Jacie Ross and Lyndsey Buchanan (and AJ); grandchildren Ava and Anthony Buchanan; sister Cheryl Ross (and Jaime); and brothers Brett Ross (and Debbie) and Joby Ross (and Annette). A Memorial Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Friday, November 9 at 7:30PM in the multi-purpose room at Los Paseos Elementary School, 121 Avenida Grande, San Jose 95139. We welcome anyone who knew Lori to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations made to: The Girl Scouts of Northern CA 1650 Harbor Bay Parkway, Suite 100 Alameda, CA 94502 Please reference “Lori Ross, Hidden Falls” These funds will go toward a new Camp Director cabin named after Lori. In addition, Eleanor was an active supporter and member of the Latino community in Gilroy. She was a founding member of the Gilroy Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Gilroy Hispanic Cultural Festival, and more recently the Latino Family Fund. In 2017 she received the Legacy Award from Community Agency for Resources, Advocacy, and Services (CARAS). Eleanor was a founding member of the Exchange Club of Gilroy and the Coastal Habitat Education Environmental Restoration (CHEER).
