Traffic snarls school zones HOLLISTER DISTRICT LOOKING FOR WAYS TO EASE LONG LINES MORNINGS AND AFTERNOONS Scott Forstner Reporter

Traffic and parking problems at three local grade schools during student dropoff and pickup times have persisted this school year, increasing safety risks, Hollister School District staff warned last week. Underdeveloped roads surrounding Gabilan Hills/Hollister Dual Language Academy, Calaveras/Accelerated Achievement Academy and R.O. Hardin/Hollister Prep School “do not provide safe routes for pedestrians and adequate on-street parking,” according to a Nov. 27 staff report presented to the HSD Board of Education. The number of cars, along with enrollment swollen by two school programs at each campus, prompted the school board in September to ask district staff to conduct a traffic safety assessment at the three schools. “As long as you have schools, there will be traffic issues twice a day, so we have to accept that,” said Trustee Robert Bernosky, who added that he experienced the congestion when his own three children attended local public schools.

The 28th annual Lights On Celebration in Hollister kicked off the holiday season with a huge crowd, plenty of lights and festive cheer. Nearly 10,000 people took a pause from holiday shopping on Nov. 24 to join the community in ushering in its annual holiday celebration.

The parade and party sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association included food vendors, a car show, tree decorating, live entertainment and an evening parade with Santa. Nearly 80 lighted entries participated in the lighted, themed spectacle, “Through the Eyes of a Child.”

Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital has expanded its diabetes services with the new Barragan Family Health Care and Diabetes Center. The center was funded by a donation by Mary Ann Barragan and a grant from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and is the first and only of its kind in San Benito County. The Diabetes Center, located at 930 Sunnyslope Road, Ste. A2, offers

a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to the care of diabetes under direction of a team led by endocrinologist Michael Koteles, MD, with Dr. Aileen Wang. The center was made possible by a donation from Barragan, a longtime resident of Hollister, in honor of her late husband Ray Barragan, who suffered from diabetes for many years. Current data indicates that 17.5 percent of the adult population in San Benito County has diabetes, and an estimated 30 percent of the adult population is considered pre-diabetic or at risk of becoming diabetic, according to the hospital.

Cannabis cultivation headed to Dec. 11 vote JUNE VOTE CLEARED WAY FOR COUNTY SUPERVISORS TO OK NEW INDUSTRY Bryce Stoepfel & Jaqueline McCool Reporter

File

After months owf deliberation and a countywide vote to adopt a tax structure for the recreational cannabis business, marijuana may be coming to unincorporated San Benito County. The San Benito County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1, with outgoing Supervisor Jerry Muenzer in dissent, to move forward with a resolution to approve the cultivation and manufacturing of recreational cannabis in unincorporated parts of the county. A final vote is expected Dec. 11. County voters approved the cannabis business tax measure in June, with nearly 60 percent supporting it. The county resolution would require filing separate permits for each type of commercial cannabis business. The six cannabis business permit types are cultivation, manufacturing, testing, distribution, microbusinesses, and out-ofcounty retail. Microbusinesses are a combination of cannabis operations that include cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and retail. Outof-county retail sales would allow cannabis delivery services to deliver retail cannabis to customers in neighboring counties. The ordinance would not allow cannabis dispensaries in unincorporated San

Benito County, unlike the City of Hollister. The city allows dispensaries, cultivation, laboratory testing, distribution and delivery to storefronts. The cannabis dispensaries that come to Hollister can only sell marijuana for medicinal use. Following the county resolution, the city of Hollister’s marijuana regulations will not change. The resolution before the supervisors will only apply to the unincorporated parts of the county and is similar to ordinances passed by neighboring California counties. Many counties were left lost when it came to regulating marijuana following the 2016 approval of Proposition 64, which legalized the sale and possession of cannabis. This led to several counties banning cannabis sales or cultivation all together in unincorporated county areas. Proposition 64 may have legalized the recreational use of marijuana, but it gave the power to municipalities to decide if cannabis businesses could get business licenses. The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and the Hollister Fire Department raised concerns at the Nov. 20 Board of Supervisors meeting over the need for additional staffing to enforce the incoming unincorporated cannabis industry. Police Capt. Eric Taylor voiced concern over the difficulty of policing illegal cannabis cultivation along with the challenge of detecting cannabis impairment. Hollister Fire Marshall Charlie Bedolla said his department lacks staffing to handle the existing

and emerging cannabis businesses in Hollister. The San Benito County resolution will require cannabis businesses to renew their permit every year. Employees working at cannabis businesses also need to apply for Cannabis Employee Work Permits before they're allowed to work. In July the county hired Hdl Companies, a consulting firm in Brea, California, that specializes in helping government agencies write and adopt laws and cannabis-related government departments, to assist the county in crafting its cannabis ordinance. The path toward legal commercial cannabis swung from a possibility to a probability after voters in unincorporated San Benito County

voted to pass Measure C in the June 2018 primaries. In what was designed to be an informal poll about whether voters would accept commercial cannabis, Measure C also established a basis for how the cannabis industry would pay taxes. Tax rates will range from $3 to $17 per square foot for cannabis cultivators. Tax on gross sales for distributors will range from 0.5 to 4 percent; for manufacturers, 2.5 to 4 percent; for retailers, 0.5 to 8 percent; and 2.5 to 5 percent for microbusinesses, an exclusive license that allows for every aspect of cannabis operation in one business. To help regulate the commercial cannabis industry in the county, the Board of Supervisors will create the Cannabis Business

Regulatory Agency, to be headed by County Administrative Officer Ray Espinoza. As Espinoza works to hire staff for the Cannabis Business Regulatory Agency, supervisors Mark Medina and Jaime de La Cruz reaffirmed that funds raised through Measure C taxes should be used to hire additional county staff. In addition to issuing Cannabis Business Permits and Cannabis Business Work Permits, the Cannabis Business Regulatory Agency will interview applicants, apply rules and issue necessary forms, and will be empowered to add new rules and regulations. California state law states that individuals need to be at least 21 years old to buy cannabis products or

18 years old with a doctor's recommendation. Two new medical cannabis dispensaries, Monterey Bay Alternative Care, 773 San Felipe Road, and Higher Level Care, 1802 Shelton Drive, are expected to open toward the end of spring 2019. Currently, there are only four cannabis businesses operating in Hollister, according to the city’s Cannabis Affairs Department: Agripharma Extraction LLC, Agripharma Nursery LLC, Agripharma Distribution LLC, and High Sierra Analytics Inc.,, each located at 1851 Airway Drive. Of the eight cannabis operations in their final occupancy stage, four are expected to be open by the end of January.

Hollister police learn how to serve special needs ‘MEET ‘N GREET EVENT IMPROVES POLICE OFFICERS’ UNDERSTANDING OF CITIZENS’ SPECIFIC NEEDS Michael Moore Reporter

Pompa noted that the department can direct special-needs residents to resources in the community if they are in need of help or having an emergency. One such resource is the San Andreas Regional Center, one of the parents noted at the Nov. 15 meet-and-greet. After Pompa explained and demonstrated the different types of contact police officers might have with the residents if they encounter out in public, the group shared cookies and refreshments and continued to converse about the needs of the community.

Michael Moore

Hollister Police invited members of the local special-needs community to the police headquarters last month for a “meetand-greet” to help the officers and residents get to know each other. The Nov. 15 event was organized by Hollister resident and parent Brian Taylor, who attended with his son Spencer. About 15 special-needs

residents and their families joined about half a dozen Hollister police officers for the meetand-greet event. “We wanted to bring officers and community members together so we can have some mutual understanding and get to know each other a little bit,” Taylor told the group. “This is a chance for officers and us to learn how to talk to each other.” Taylor and other parents noted that disabled residents sometimes don’t respond as officers might expect to common communication efforts. Officer Lupe

More students means more cars at city schools Traffic, 1 “The other part that is somewhat unique to San Benito County is we build schools along roads that don’t have sidewalks, for example, or traffic mitigation measures that you’d typically expect to see,” he added. That has left district and school staffs in a tough spot as far as finding a quick resolution. Incoming trustee Carla Deluna-Torres, who won a school board seat in the Nov. 5 election, has experienced the traffic issues firsthand as a parent of two students who attend Hollister Dual Language Academy. “It did get worse this year.

...The traffic and the way the set-up is (for dropoff/pickup) doesn’t make it easy for us,” said Deluna-Torres, who hopes to discuss the issue with city officials once she joins the board. “I know there’s a concern. It’s on our radar. We just need to find other options.” According to staff, the traffic congestion worsens at the end of the school day when parents arrive to pick up their children. Common reasons identified for this were: parents arriving 30 to 45 minutes before dismissal; vehicles blocking access to school parking lot and traffic on roadways adjacent to school sites; and parking illegally and violating traffic laws.

“The site administrators have and continue to work and communicate with the parents/guardians/care-providers to improve conditions and safety for students and staff,” according to the staff report. Other factors include school parking lots not large enough to accommodate the number of vehicles, limited street parking and sidewalks on roadways adjacent to schools and not enough staff to effectively assist in traffic flow during the dropoff and pickup times. “It’s a twice-a-day problem, and we will do what we can to mitigate

it as much as we can, but the problem will never fully go away,” Bernosky said. “If there is a solution where we can use parents and other volunteers, that would be fantastic.” According to Bernosky, the teachers union “does not want to be involved” and “everyone is saying it is somebody else’s problem,” which has led to little movement in alleviating the issue. “We asked (staff) to come back with solutions we can act on opposed to us figuring it out,” Bernosky said. Staff did present a number of corrective measures listed at three priority levels at the board meeting.

Those included reviewing school start and end times sending home informational mailers and an “allcall reminder” addressing dropoff and pickup procedures and safety, hosting a parent meeting and getting the student resource officer to closely monitor traffic at those times. “One fix at Calaveras would be to not allow cars to turn left when they leave the school,” suggested principal Ken Woods. Other district proposals were to hire additional staff to assist with operations, close the school lots until dismissal time, designate more dropoff/ pickup locations at sites,

introduce a walking/ school bus program, work with the city and county to regulate on-street parking, increase busing and make road improvements. “Many of the suggestions are fairly easy to implement, while others may need more time, coordination and collaboration with other entities/agencies,” according to the staff report. School staff and board members will revisit the issue at a future school board meeting. Bernosky said, “I’m committed to doing whatever is necessary to alleviate the problem if it can be alleviated.”

Keith Snow thanks Hollister voters

GUEST VIEW SHAWN TENNENBAUM

Thanks for community support of San Benito High

A

s we enter the holiday season, it is an appropriate time to offer thanks to our community— on campus and throughout the county—for its ongoing support of our efforts to make San Benito High School a modern, innovative and inclusive campus. Particular thanks goes out to the voters, whose support of recent bond Measures G and U has provided resources to allow the district to modernize and construct classroom and athletic facilities that will benefit students for decades to come. From the addition of air conditioning in all classrooms to the construction of career technical education and visual and performing arts instructional facilities, San Benito High School now has cutting-edge classrooms that promote our mission of educating every student to their highest potential so they have the greatest range of options upon graduation. Our state-of-the-art aquatics complex, stadium and softball complex continue their march toward completion, and our campus has never looked so good, thanks to the hardworking grounds, custodial and maintenance staffs whose painting, landscaping and cleaning work has added new life to our grounds. With the school year not yet at the halfway point, we have already celebrated the weekday closure of Nash Road where it bisects campus to provide safe crossing for thousands of students, faculty and staff each day. We have already realized more than $100,000 in cost savings from energy-efficiency measures and will soon see even more as the newly installed campus solar panels help offset our costs. In partnership with the City of Hollister, traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and reverse-angle parking have made the area around campus safer, and the city recently approved our request to make the corner of West and B streets into a four-way stop,

making that intersection safer for students, parents and the community. Working with the city, the County of San Benito and Sunnyslope County Water District, we held a grand opening for the new River Parkway west and south of campus. The road diverts traffic away from campus while allowing vehicles to still travel without significant delays during school days. Thanks go out to the school faculty, administration and classified staff for their commitment to academic success, which has

Traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps and reverse-angle parking have made the area around campus safer. been evident with the recent release of test scores that show San Benito High School students are outperforming their state and national counterparts in multiple measures of progress. The partnerships and collaboration extend to the Academic Task Force, which brings together representatives from campus, feeder schools and the community to discuss the Strategic Plan, which is used to drive planning and decision making. As we enter this season of reflection and a focus on family, we want the community to know that our progress and success is in large part because of your support. The next year will bring even more progress, with the physical education/athletic facility completion, a new robotics and science classroom facility and a continued focus on making San Benito High School a great place to learn.

To the Editor: My name is Keith Snow. I just want to say thank you to all my supporters and everyone who believed in me during this mayoral race. I appreciate you all from the bottom of my heart. I also want to thank all the sponsors that put on the debates, meet-the-candidates events and all the events that took place during this election. We appreciate your support as well. Of course, there is always some kind of controversy and dirty politics—no one ever plays fair in this political world. I was called so many names, including a conspiracy theory. Wow. I feel I ran a good, fair race. I stayed under budget and still completed a wellrounded race. The hassle and runaround that they give me is every year. I only ran four times. I have to say this year was the worst of all. I kind of think they feel like the more they mess with me or give me a hard time, that they hope I will just quit! But, no, that only makes me want to try harder and fight stronger. I may be disabled in the physical sense, but my heart and passion for what I believe in, you can never take that away from me. I will continue to help the people and stand up for what is right: honesty, fairness, equality. As a community I hope that more people will continue to come together and speak out; use your voice and resources and we can and will make a difference. One day at a time. Never give up. Things we will still have to deal with for who knows how much longer are all these contracts they keep getting into that we can’t afford for projects that never get done. Back-door deals. This is all truth and facts. Wasteful spending, uncontrolled crime, not enough help for the homeless—they only do what will benefit them for the moment. We need to think long-term what our city will be like in the future: overcrowded, not enough jobs and more homeless. Is this really what we must look forward to? I’m also hurt that people would take my signs off people’s lawns and damage and destroy them. If you look at my page, you will see more facts and evidence. If these same people continue to be in charge, we will never see a change. It will always be the same. I thank the people for their insight and communicating with me, because they are the ones who notified me and helped me when these things were going on. I appreciate that. There needs to be a positive change, especially for our children. They are the future and we need to do better for them; we need higher standards. I will always be a focused leader, in office or not. God bless. (I am still waiting on all my public record requests from the city leaders and workers, for which I pay 10 cents a page.) Keith Snow

Give to Operation Interdependence As area manager, I’m grateful for the article written about Operation Interdependence (OI) in the Nov. 9 Dispatch. If you have not seen it, pull it up online and read about all that this volunteer-based, 501(c)3 organization has done to support our deployed heroes since 9/11. We have eight centers across the nation and relies on the generosity of communities to cover the monthly expenses of $5,000, covering liability insurance, utilities and shipping costs. Gilroy has been fortunate to have funds to ship 20 boxes of 25 quart sized goodies to our troops. This is the first year that this caring organization is finding it difficult to be able to ship from all the locations, spread out in California, Colorado and Texas. This is the perfect time of year to do something special for those serving our country. Think of the sacrifice the families have made and the loneliness both they and the one’s serving will experience during the holidays. Please show you care and help Operation Interdependence continue to do this kindhearted, honorable and charitable service with a tax-deductible donation. For information, email suzikugler@yahoo. com. Thank you. Suzi Kugler

‘Probable’ gang ties in shooting, police say VICTIM IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE MCCRAY ST. DRIVE-BY SHOOTING Michael Moore Reporter

Hollister Police continue to investigate the Nov. 18 drive-by shooting that resulted in serious injuries to a 19-year-old man. Hollister Police Sgt. Don Pershall said Dec. 3 that investigating officers had not yet identified any suspects in the shooting, which occurred on the southeast side of downtown Hollister. Pershall added that the incident was “probably” gang-related. About 4:50pm Nov. 18, Hollister police

officers responded to the area of South Street and Prospect Avenue on a report of a shooting that had just occurred. The 19-year-old male victim had been walking with his girlfriend on the west sidewalk of McCray Street in the area of the 600 block of that street, according to police. A vehicle approached northbound on McCray Street, and someone inside the moving car shot at the couple three to five times. The male victim was struck in the torso and transported by helicopter to a Bay Area trauma center, according to police. He was expected to survive the gunshot wound. Pershall did not have an update on the victim’s condition last week. The suspect vehicle

is described as a gray or gold sedan, possibly a Honda or Toyota, according to police. Hollister police officers processed the shooting scene for possible evidence and contacted local businesses that might have surveillance video footage of the area. Police are asking anyone who was in the area during that time and witnesses the shooting or the vehicle speeding away to call the Hollister Police Department with any information they have. Anyone with information about this crime can call the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip hotline at (800) 87-CRIME. Information provided to WeTip may qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.

Police looking for Hollister package thief RESIDENTS ARE WARNED PACKAGE THEFTS RISE DURING THE WINTER HOLIDAYS Staff report

the surveillance system in hopes the public can help identify her. Anyone with information about this case can call the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip Hotline at 80078-CRIME. Information provided to WeTip may qualify for a reward. Police are reminding residents that package thefts tend to increase this time of year. Residents are advised to gather packages from their front door or mailbox as soon as possible. Residents can also consider the following tips to avoid being a victim:

• Have packages delivered to your work; • Schedule deliveries for times you will be home. This keeps packages from sitting unattended for long periods of time; • Buddy up with a neighbor. Tell your neighbor you are expecting a package and keep an eye out for each other; • Require a signature. This extra insurance ensures that you won’t have packages piling up at your door; • Consider using a smart locker, or provide special instructions to the delivery person to place packages out of sight or to lock in a container on your property.

Hollister Police Department

‘Tis the season for holiday greetings—and doorstep package theft— and Hollister Police are on the lookout for their first reported suspect this winter. On Nov. 27, an unidentified woman stole a package from the front doorstep of a residence on the 1100 block of Marne Drive, according to Hollister police. Officers are

asking for the public’s help identifying the woman, whose image was captured on the victim’s home surveillance system. The victim of the crime told police she was contacted by a Hollister resident who found the empty package container several streets away from the victim’s home, police said. A packing slip with the victim’s phone number on it was left behind. The package contained several items before it was stolen. The victim has a video surveillance system and was able to provide police with footage of the theft. Hollister police subsequently released photos of the female suspect from

Barragan gift boosted new diabetes center ➝ Diabetes 1

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults (starting at age 18) at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity, and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Admission into the program is through physician referral. Hazel Hawkins Hospital also announced that it has finalized a partnership with Pediatrix Medical Group of California, a MEDNAX affiliate that also provides services to

Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. Pediatric hospitalists from Pediatrix will begin supporting women’s and children’s services at Hazel Hawkins as early as February 2019. “I would to commend our CEO Ken Underwood for finalizing a partnership with Pediatrix Medical Group of California, a nationally renowned pediatric medical group,” said Dr. M. Aslam Barra, of the hospital medical staff. Pediatrix and Hazel Hawkins will work together to establish a premier pediatric hospitalist program in Hollister, increasing community

access to top-quality pediatric care. Pediatrix will provide hospital-based pediatric hospitalists to assist with high-risk newborn deliveries, help determine when a newborn requires transport out for critical care, and support the care of well newborns in the nursery, as well as inpatient children and teens. Pediatric hospitalists will also be on hand to provide onsite consultative services to attending medical staff and emergency physicians and to help stabilize patients in emergency situations. Pediatrix provides the same spectrum of

pediatric services to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose and to several other South Bay hospitals. Dr. Richard Powers, MEDNAX-affiliated neonatologist and chief of staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, will serve as the liaison between Good Samaritan and HHMH and facilitate recruitment and staffing of pediatric hospitalists in Hollister. Good Samaritan Hospital’s neonatology group has, for many years, been assisting HHMH with the stabilization and transport of high-risk newborns, and supported physicians with telephone consultations. “We have a long-standing

relationship with Hazel Hawkins, built over the last 10 to 15 years, and this is the next step,” said Powers. “The importance of this program is placing quality physicians in the Hollister community to establish continuity of care.” The Hollister hospital pursued a partnership with Pediatrix due to the need for full-time pediatric support at the hospital, according to a statement. Currently most pediatricians in Hollister have established officebased practices and cannot staff the hospital. “Pediatrix has a history and national reputation for providing excellent care to newborns and children,”

said Ken Underwood, Hazel Hawkins CEO. “This partnership will bring experience and vital support to our top-tier Women’s Center and ER, and to children admitted to Hazel Hawkins Hospital.” Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital also announced the hospital has received an “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group, awarded in Fall 2018 for their commitment to exceptional patient safety and meeting the highest quality and safety standards. Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

Student food drive hits record

San Benito High School

San Benito High School students, faculty and staff collected 2,023 items during the recently completed Canned Food Drive. That is the most donated food contributed in recent history, surpassing the 1,964 items collected in 2017. All food will be donated to the Community Food Bank of San Benito County. Mr. Vu’s leadership class students collected and counted the items for the annual drive, which is coordinated by Student Activities Director Catalina Lemos and the Associated Student Body.

Departing trustee Tiffany honored for service SBHS ALUMNUS SERVED 16 YEARS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD Staff report

provided more than just a calm, balanced approach; he provided unwavering stability and a focus on ensuring the district was always headed in the right direction.” At his last meeting, Tiffany fondly recalled his time as a student on campus, where he was senior class president in a class of 235 graduating seniors. He discussed how much the campus has changed in the last 50 years and how the community should appreciate what the district has done with voterapproved bond measures to improve the campus in recent years. Tiffany praised the

dedication of the SBHS faculty, staff, campus supervisors, administrators and others. He noted how various measures of academic success have been on an upward trend and said students should count themselves fortunate to have school leaders worth emulating. Tennenbaum praised Tiffany for his leadership on the safety effort to close Nash Road where it bisects campus and pointed out that “he has also helped to forge lasting relationships with the greater school community. There is no greater contribution one can provide than the service to the next generation.”

San Benito High School

San Benito High School District Trustee William Tiffany, a 1968 graduate of SBHS, was recognized by his colleagues Nov. 27 for his 16 years of service to the board and the school. Tiffany chose not to run for re-election this year and will be succeeded by 1987 Baler alumnus Miguel Sahagun in December. Superitendent Shawn Tennenbaum had words of appreciation for Tiffany on behalf of the district, saying that he “ served his alma mater with a steady focus and balance that was unprecedented. Rossi on the rise

Rossi, a junior, will wrestle at 120 to 126 pounds. Rossi made nice strides in the off-season after wrestling a lot of freestyle tournaments. “Ethan is very similar to Michael in that he’s pretty tough to take down on his feet,” Salcedo said. “He’s kind of quiet, but on the mat, he’s vicious.” Barajas, a senior who will wrestle around 138 pounds, typifies the prototypical Baler in terms of having a strong work ethic and always going all out in every practice and match. Some key newcomers include freshman Albert Colmenero, who will wrestle around 126 pounds, and Noah Nelson, another freshman who will compete around 113 pounds. “I’m excited about working with both of them, and they’re guys I have high hopes for,” Salcedo said.

After finishing sixth in the Central Coast Section Championships last year, Michael Guzman knew he needed to make improvements to realize his goal of making the podium this season and advancing to state. The San Benito High senior is confident he’s made the necessary improvements to close the gap between him and the very best in the 145-pound division, which is one of the most stacked weight classes in the CCS. “I’m excited and feeling really good,” Guzman said. “I feel like I’m in my best shape and feeling really confident. Last year CCS was tough, but looking back it was apparent I had to work on my bottom game and get stronger.” Haybalers coach Steven Salcedo has high hopes for Guzman, who trained for a good portion of the off-season. “Michael is good on his feet and is very hard to score on,” Salcedo said. “He’s good on defense and a scrambler, meaning even if you get a hold of him, he’s hard to keep down. He tends to find his way on top in scramble position, has some good takedowns and his best

position is when he’s on his feet in the neutral position.” Guzman leads another San Benito team that expects to be solid again. Other top returners include Albert Rodriguez, Ethan Rossi, Ricardo Nunez and Jack Barajas. Rodriguez enters the week ranked seventh in the 220-pound division. A standout on the football team, Rodriguez is making a name for himself on the mat. Last season, Rodriguez finished second in the league tournament before going 3-2 in the CCS Tournament. “Albert has grown into his own,” Salcedo said. “He’s a big, strong kid, and athletic. He can move his feet, which for a bigger guy is not always easy.”

THE WRESTLERS Ethan Rossi and Michael Guzman are two of the several standouts on a San Benito team that finished third in the Gabilan Division last year. San Benito expects to have a strong team yet again. San Benito has a new girls coach in former standout Samantha Barrientos, and a topnotch returner in Jenna Hartman, who is ranked second at 116 pounds. Hartman had a tremendous sophomore season last year, finishing third in the CCS Tournament to advance to state. “Jenna is a stud and we’re hoping she wins CCS this year,” Salcedo said. “She is an awesome young lady, one of the hardest workers in the room and very smart with a 4.1 GPA. If she continues doing well, she will find herself earning a scholarship.” The Balers have another

standout on the girls team in Madeline Pena, who is ranked third at 126 pounds. Guzman made the necessary adjustments in the off-season to put himself in the best position possible to have a fantastic senior season. To improve his cardio, Guzman ran regularly, completing 6 mile runs every Sunday. He also jump-roped and did 100 push-ups every morning. Guzman also competed in some competitive freestyle and folkstyle tournaments in the off-season, placing seventh in the CAUSA High School Folkstyle Championships in March.

Another big reason why Guzman feels more confident than ever is the fact he’s a heavier 145 pounds this season rather than a light 145, which was the case last season. A year ago, Guzman had to work hard to gain weight to make 145, but this year Guzman will cut weight to be at 145. “I was really nervous going into CCS last year because I was looking at these guys and thinking they’re heavier than me,” Guzman said. “Now I’ll be cutting down to that weight class, and being bigger gives me more confidence overall. I’ve never felt this good to start a season than I am now.”

Haybalers have lofty goals yet again SAN BENITO HIGH BOYS SOCCER TEAM HOPES TO KEEP A GREAT RUN GOING AS LEAGUE, CCS TITLE CONTENDERS emanuel lee Sports Editor

San Benito was after last year’s performance.” Dolan has high hopes for Barbosa, a center forward who is armed with tremendous speed and skill. Dolan said Barbosa combines physical talent along with an enthusiasm and passion for the game that shows every time he steps onto the field. Hernandez, a center midfielder, scored the team’s lone goal in a season-opening 1-1 tie against Greenfield.

Dedicated to game

“Abraham is a dedicated student of the game and has literally gotten 20 percent better every year since I’ve been around him,” Dolan said. “He keeps the game simple by winning the ball and giving the ball when it should be given up. He knows his job and does it perfectly.” And so does Rivera, who like Dolan feels the team will take time to come together, but when it does, watch out. One of the key newcomers include Danny Navarro, a center defender who didn’t play for the team last year. “We have a lot of new faces, but from the looks of it so far, we’re looking pretty good,” Rivera said. “I know we have a lot of hard workers who have a good work ethic, so as long as we stay that way, we should be fine.” Rivera showed promise early, as he was one of only two sophomores to make the team two years ago. Rivera is a top-notch defender; however, he plays a holding midfielder position for the Balers because they need him at that position. “I’m not a creative

The San Benito High boys soccer team is coming off two of its best seasons in program history, reaching the high water mark last year when it advanced to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs. Despite a coaching change and a roster that graduated several starters, the Haybalers expect to excel once again. Greg Dolan, the firstyear San Benito coach, has actually coached most of the players on the roster through his Hollister Tremors club program. The familiarity should make for a nice transition after former coach Marco Orozco stepped down in the off-season. “A lot of the players know Greg and are very close to him,” said Abel Rivera Jr., a standout senior center midfielder and the team captain. “Many of them look up to him and his leadership—he’s basically family to them.” Rivera returns to bolster a team that competes in arguably the best boys soccer league in the CCS, the Pacific Coast League’s Gabilan Division. Rivera, who played for an Almaden San Jose club team that advanced to the prestigious NorCal State Cup in September, is a physical player who wins a lot of balls through sheer effort and determination.

“Abel is a coach’s ideal player—I can’t emphasize that enough,” Dolan said. “He’s the best practice player in that he is very enthusiastic and stops all the clowns from filling around practice. He’s a rare breed where he’ll get irritated if the rest of the team around him is kind of fooling around. He takes everything seriously. His motivation is right up there with the best, and he always gives 110 percent.” In addition to Rivera, the Haybalers return impact players Jose Agredano, Abraham Hernandez, Edgar Barbosa, Ramon Delgado and Irwin Gomez. Agredano, a center midfielder, possesses tremendous ball-control skills and creativity. “He has what we call freedom of the park (trusted in decision-making) in that he’s that creative and no one has better touch on the team,” Dolan said. Gomez, a center midfielder, also blends a combination of creativity and flair and will team with Agredano in the middle to form what San Benito hopes will be a lethal and ultra-productive duo. Delgado, a center back, will be counted upon to make sure the players are constantly communicating. “He’s loud and that’s very important for the position he plays,” Dolan said. “He’s fearless and gives up his body every time, which is huge for our team. Everyone on this team has to fight and compete because all of these schools that play us are out for scalps right now given how highly ranked

player, but I win the tackles and play hard,” he said. “Defending is one of my strongest suits. That is how I help the team.” Rivera credits his workmanlike attitude to watching his father, Abel Sr. “My dad has been a huge inspiration to me in keeping me going forward,” Rivera Jr. said. “I’ve seen how hard he works and I think that has rubbed off on me. I hope

his work ethic somehow shows through me.” Even though the team has a different set of players this season, Dolan has lofty goals that he feels is grounded in realistic expectations. “It’s going to be a long haul, but my mentality is we’re going all the way or bust,” Dolan said. “I’m not coming along to build a program over 10 years— we want to win and we want to win now.”

Dolan said he was proud to point out that through the first grading period the team’s overall GPA was over 3.0. “We’ve emphasized since day one that 99 percent of you won’t be playing soccer when you leave this school, so grades are everything,” Dolan said. “We’re really strict on if your grades drop, you won’t play. All 25 players have stepped up.”

October 06, 1944 - September 08, 2018

N

icholas known to most as “Nick” or “Nicky” passed away on November 19th at the age of 56 of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis with his sister Amanda and mom Erlinda by his side. He is survived by his wife Margaret Green, his daughter Kaye Donyell Estrada, son-inlaw Antione Stanley, son Mathew Trebor, beautiful granddaughters Nia and Nalia Stanley, mother Erlinda Estrada, father Clyde Green, stepmom Ellie Green, siblings and their spouses Amanda and Guillermo Rodriguez, Gabriel and Sonia Lopez, Greg and Yvonne Lopez and Virginia Chapa, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle and cousins who loved him dearly.

L

ouisa Mary Gonzales (Phillips) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 8, 2018 in Morgan Hill, CA, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 73.

Nick was born in Los Angeles, California but grew up in Gilroy, California where he was raised by his grandparents Candido and Sidelia Estrada. He attended Elliott Elementary School, Brownell Junior High School and Gilroy High School where he graduated in 1979. Following graduation, Nick left home to serve in the U.S. Army. After serving his time in the Army, he lived in North Carolina for a while but managed to make his way back home to Gilroy. When back in Gilroy, he worked several jobs but eventually found a home at Nissan of Gilroy that he absolutely loved and where he was blessed to work with an amazing group of people. Nick loved many things but music and dancing by far were his favorites. So much so, he even started his own disco dance group back in high school. He also had a big love for sports and was a big fan of the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors. If you would like to attend services for Nicholas John (Estrada) Green details are as follows: A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 11am-1pm at Habing Family Funeral Home located at 129 4th Street, Gilroy, CA 95020. The burial will take place immediately following the Memorial Service at Mount Hope Memorial Park located at 220-398 Spring Avenue in Morgan Hill.

Mary is survived by her loving husband Ralph, devoted daughter and son-in-law Laura and Ray Dzek and their children Johnathon, Sarah, and Christopher of Morgan Hill, CA; daughter and son-in law Ellen and Robert Doig of Cadiz, KY, and grandson Brandon Kelley; son David Braswell of Jacksonville, FL and granddaughters Sydney and Reese. She is predeceased by her parents. She was a talented artist, author, and teacher. She leaves behind a legacy of original work to learn from and admire. When she wasn’t working on her next creation, you could find her outside. She delighted in sharing her wealth of knowledge of gardening and sustainable living. Her loving wisdom, generosity, and strength will be missed. Services have been held.
