Schools build a future 2018 FEATURED NEW FACES, NEW SCHOOL FACILITIES, NEW PROGRAMS Scott Forstner Reporter
From the curious case of former San Benito County School Board president Mitchell Dabo to the abrupt resignation of Hollister School District Superintendent Lisa Andrew to the physical transformation of the San Benito High School campus, 2018 was a memorable one for many reasons.
Lisa Andrew resigns
Lisa Andrew, who in 2016 described the Hollister
School District as “a good fit for me,” found it was not, as she unexpectedly announced her resignation as superintendent in June 2018. Andrew’s announcement put the district in a precarious situation, and a permanent replacement wasn’t found for the remainder of 2018. Instead, the board went with a short-term fix, hiring retired administrator William Barr on an interim basis so they could take their time with a superintendent search. The board has closed in on Andrew’s replacement, conducting interviews of six finalists in December 2018. However, that decision could be impacted with the public voting in

More than a year after a Superior Court judge ruled that former county school board president Mitchell Dabo had illegally transferred more than $644,000 from a charitable trust to his personal bank accounts, District Attorney Candice Hooper says she will bring no charges. In a Dec. 20 email to the Free Lance, Hooper faulted the Hollister Police Department for providing insufficient evidence, and failing to provide evidence of criminal intent. “We concluded that with no further information forthcoming, we could not proceed with a criminal case,” Hooper wrote in the email sent on her behalf by Assistant District Attorney Ellen Campos. When informed of the district attorney’s statement, Police Chief David Westrick said in email: “We believed there was sufficient evidence to merit at least some charges [against Mitchell Dabo] but ultimately it is the DA's office decision to move forward or not.” “Not all cases have confessions or overwhelming evidence,” Westrick wrote.

Newly elected City Councilmember Cesar Flores has been appointed the new mayor of San Juan Bautista. The three new council members—Flores, Leslie Jordan and Mary Vazquez Edge—all voted for
Flores’ appointment on Dec.18. Councilmembers John Freeman and Dan DeVries voted against Flores’ appointment. A vote for mayor is routinely scheduled for the first December meeting of the year. This year the meeting followed the Dec. 6 announcement of the death of Mayor Jim West. The San Benito County Sheriff 's office released a statement regarding West’s cause of death on Dec. 19. Capt. Eric Taylor said in the release, “Our investigation
has determined Mr. West's cause of death was suicide.” “Our deputies were called to Mayor West’s workplace, Graniterock on 2391 San Juan Highway, on the morning of Dec. 6, 2018,” said Taylor. “An employee called our office after hearing a gunshot and finding Mr. West’s body.’ “Out of respect for Mr. West's loved ones, we will not be releasing further information.” The city’s Dec. 6 statement had read, "The City of San Juan Bautista was very saddened today to

San Benito County District Attorney Candice Hooper continued early this year to investigate possible criminal charges against local tax preparer Mitchell Dabo in connection with his siphoning of $644,000 out of a charitable trust. In addition to a 217page evidence binder detailing Dabo’s transfer of nearly all money from the Matulich Charitable Trust that was presented last month at a civil trial in Superior Court, documents on record also offered a long list of potential pieces of evidence that had been unsuccessfully sought by the Community Foundation for San Benito County. Hollister police investigated and passed a report to the Hooper in March, who revealed this month she decided to file no charges against Dabo.

DA: No proof of ‘criminal intent’ ➝ Prosecute, 1
Foundation officials said Dec. 21 that Hooper never contacted them in 2018 and did not return their phone calls. Before their deaths, Barbara and Tony Matuiich of Hollister had created a charitable trust, stipulating that all proceeds would go to the Community Foundation for San Benito County upon their deaths. After Barbara’s death in 2012, the foundation learned that nearly all of the remaining money—approximately $644,000—in the trust was gone. Dabo was the trustee of the Matulich Trust and a a lifelong friend of the Matulich family. When he failed to offer an explanation for the missing funds, the foundation went to the police and to the district attorney, who advised its leaders to sue him, which it did in 2017. Dabo provided documents to the court in the civil lawsuit that showed he had drained money from the fund for his personal use, including unsecured
DA’s complete statement
Here is a complete text of the district attorney’s Dec. 20 statement: “This case was initially referred to us by the community foundation, who provided us with documents for us to review. It appeared that the attorney handling the civil lawsuit was the source of most of the documents that were passed on to us. “We consulted with a DA from a neighboring county who has some expertise with these kinds of cases and a forensic accountant. Both said that in order to prove criminal liability and criminal intent, we would need more information and documents than what was provided to us. “We told the community foundation to refer
FINANCIAL ADVICE Mitchell Daboís place of business is around the corner from the Community Foundation for San Benito County, which won a $1.75 million judgment against him. the case to the Hollister Police Department for investigation. “At this time, it was our conclusion that we could not prevail in a criminal court because criminal intent could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt; and that, in fact, the case should be adjudicated in civil court. “When the Hollister Police Department sent the case to us to review, they did not provide any additional evidence or information. Nor did we receive any further documents or information from the foundation’s law firm. “After taking this into consideration, along with another consultation with the forensic accountant, we concluded that with no further information forthcoming, we could not proceed with a criminal case. At this point, the community foundation had already won a judgment against Mr. Dabo in a civil lawsuit.” Police investigators said last spring that they had twice sent evidence back to Hooper, and that they had concluded their investigation.
Dabo provided documents
According to documents provided by Dabo himself in a civil lawsuit brought by the San Benito County Community Foundation, the draining of nearly all funds from an $800,000 trust began in 2009 and continued after the death of Barbara Matulich of Hollister in 2012. Hollister police had said they passed on the results of their investigation to Hooper in March The chief declined to say this week when he communicated to Hooper his recommendation, or if his detectives had ever interviewed Dabo or sought to obtain additional evidence such as bank records, with a warrant or subpoena. He added: “The level of proof is different for a civil court versus criminal court.” The Dec. 20 email was Hooper’s public first comment on the Dabo case in nine months. The district attorney did not say when she reached this conclusion, and refused to answer any questions about the case, or about her decision not to prosecute. She said she had hired a forensic accountant to look at the evidence, but did not say whether police ever interrogated Dabo, or whether she or the police followed up on names of other possible victims. While complaining about insufficient evidence, Hooper didn’t say whether her office or police had ever sought or obtained a long list of potential pieces of evidence that had been unsuccessfully sought by the Community Foundation for San Benito County in the civil case, which could have shed more light on Dabo’s personal finances.
loans to friends. One of the pieces of evidence he provided was a check made out to him for $21,000 drawn on the trust’s account and signed by him. Dabo did not contest the lawsuit brought by the foundation, and in November 2017 the judge ordered Dabo, a financial adviser and tax preparer, to pay $1.74 million. None of this has been paid, according to the foundation. Officials of the foundation, which had hoped to distribute the trust fund money to local charities, expressed frustration and disappointment when informed of Hooper’s decision. “My board chair, Phil Fortino, has reached out many times to the DA’s office asking the same questions you have, and we have not heard back at all,” foundation CEO Gary Byrne said in an email to the Free Lance. “We dropped off all documents related to the case to the DA’s office and never heard back,” Fortino said. Fortino said Police Chief David Westrick had left messages with the district attorney about the Dabo case and never got a response. Westrick did not respond to Free Lance questions about the Dabo case. Numerous requests from the Free Lance for interviews and comments from Hooper throughout 2018 were ignored or rejected.
MONEY FROM TRUST Here is a check Mitchell Dabo made out to cash from the charitable trust, which he endorsed.. gathered by John Clark of Morgan Hill, the foundation’s lawyer, and affirmed by a Superior Court judge at the Nov. 13 civil trial included trust bank statements, canceled checks, emails and court documents detailing the systematic draining of funds from the charitable trust by Dabo. Hooper said in late November 2017 that she would ask a special forensic accountant to look at the civil court evidence and investigate possible crimes by Dabo, a selfdescribed financial planner and tax preparer. Hooper sent the binder to the Hollister police investigators in December, and on Dec. 12, 2017, the police department officially opened its investigation, Capt. Carlos Reynoso confirmed this month. The binder included copies of canceled checks from the trust signed by Dabo and evidence of electronic transfers from the trust to a Mitchell Dabo Associates bank account. The canceled checks included numerous checks
made out to “cash” and signed by Dabo, in amounts ranging from $2,700 to $21,008; three checks, totaling $490,000, to the late Jack Tyler, Dabo’s friend and former business associate; one check, for $3,000, to Barbara Matulich dated three weeks after she died in March 2012.
Money for charities disappeared
The money in the Matulich trust had been earmarked for nonprofits served by the Community Foundation for San Benito County, which received just $82,110 from the trust. The foundation said in court papers that Dabo had offered no explanation for the missing funds. In November 2017, a week after the civil court judgment, Dabo, in his only public comment in the case, apologized in a signed online statement for what he called “a costly mistake.” He has repeatedly declined requests for interviews. Dabo was an elected member of the county board of education, and served as its president in
2017-18. He did not seek re-election in 2018. Byrne said earlier this year that several individuals had reached out to him, alleging they were victims of fraud or theft by Dabo, but he said none had agreed to come forward. Fortino said last year he was hopeful there would be a criminal investigation and that additional victims would come forward. “There are others who have said they had a similar experience,” he added. Reynoso said earlier this year that no additional possible victims of Dabo had come forward, and that police had not interviewed any. He added that anyone who believes they were the victim of fraud or theft in their dealings with Dabo should contact Hollister police at (831) 636-4330. He said Hooper has sent the case back to police twice, and both times it was sent back to her office. He declined to say whether or not police had recommended prosecution.
“When the Hollister Police Department sent the case to us to review, they did not provide any additional evidence or information. Nor did we receive any further documents or information from the Foundation’s law firm . —DISTRICT ATTORNEY CANDICE HOOPER

Parting shots from Jerry Brown
A
re you taking notes, Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom? In the final days of his fourth and (presumably) final term as California’s chief executive, Gov. Jerry Brown spoke at the Sacramento Press Club, offering parting, and remarkably candid, tips on how to best govern the Golden State. Tip Number 1: Avoid overexposure “One thing I learned was not have an openended press conference every week,” the governor said. The reason: Reporters have the nasty habit of calling you out when you contradict yourself. “It’s hard to be consistent in the face of an ever-complex, ever-unfolding story,” he said. Sure enough, this was Brown’s first-ever visit to the state Capitol’s reporters club since returning to Sacramento as governor in 2011. But when he was asked whether he planned on commuting the sentences of any of the 739 people on death row in California, Brown made it clear that he was not there to provide fresh fodder to the reporters in the room. Tip Number 2: Don’t try to make everyone happy. Ever since running for governor in 1974 on the promise to introduce an “era of limits,” Brown has cultivated a reputation as willing to buck his party’s big-spending tendencies. Apparently, there is political logic to being a budgetary tightwad. “The idea that you’re going to make people happy and build a lot of support by doing a lot of stuff, frankly, it turns out that there’s a downside,” he said. “The more that you do, the more that people are empowered to demand that you do even more.” Tip Number 3: Do try to make some people happy. As a politician known for sprinkling Latin into his speeches, Brown paid tribute to the wisdom of the phrase quid pro quo. “In politics, you should take care of your friends,” said Brown, noting that both Michael Picker, president of the California Public Utilities
Commission, and Rose Bird, former chief justice of the California court system, started out working for his various campaigns. “Loyalty is important. Keep the meritocracy within limits.” Tip Number 4: Don’t get distracted by ideological labels. Brown was Oakland’s mayor between 1999 and 2007. That stint taught him that just because someone claims to represent a particular viewpoint that you happen to share, that doesn’t mean that they have the best idea. “People show up to city hall and argue for the stupidest things in the name of all good things,” he said. “Environment, labor, historic preservation, ethics, police accountability. Everybody’s got a good story.” Tip Number 5: If you’re running for president, don’t do it out of California. “Nixon paved the way” for Californians running for the White House, he said. “He moved to New York.” With so many early primary states located on the east coast and the daily news starting three hours earlier, “proximity is a key issue that works against Californians.” That could change in 2020. Last year, California legislators voted to bump up the 2020 state primary to March 3. Brown tackled other topics, all the while honoring his pledge not to say anything too newsworthy. On the state’s high-speed rail, he assured Skelton that it will be built. “I think at our age we shouldn’t be driving,” he said. On his imminent departure from elected office, he said that he will miss the constant activity that comes with the job. “I like sparring with the press, I like raising money, I like attacking my opponents, I like being attacked by my opponents,” he said. But come Jan. 7, he will be giving that all up and heading up to his ranch in Colusa County, where he said he’ll have to deal with “real rattlesnakes.” Ben Christopher writes for CalMatters, a non-profit journalism project in Sacramento.

Lots of decisions were made in 2018––some which were entirely or partially within our control and others that were made on our behalf, or in secret, or areas of the world unknown to us. We won’t know the outcomes immediately, but we do know that every decision made influences the future. Facebook made decisions which led to Cambridge Analytica using consumer data without their knowledge. And then Facebook didn’t consider it a breach of privacy and trust until the public––and eventually Congress––found out. Twitter made decisions about its algorithms and what constitutes hate speech and intimidation, effectively preserving the status quo. Consumers made a decision to buy peripherals rather than investing in newer phones that haven’t added features or functionality. The sale of smartphones plateaued worldwide. Apple’s new iPhone XS didn’t wow consumers as expected. Samsung sort of revealed a phone with a foldable screen, but didn’t mention when or whether it would go on sale. Consumers also made decisions about their digital privacy. Overwhelmingly, we decided that the benefits of using our devices far outweighed the drawbacks of third parties scraping and using our data. In the US, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai made a decision to roll back laws intended to protect consumers and the open internet. Cities decided to allow transportation-as-aservice companies to set up shop including electric scooters and bikes, along with ride sharing apps. The Supreme Court ruled that law enforcement must get a warrant to access your past location data from wireless carriers and others. It also ruled that states can now force retailers to collect sales taxes during online transactions. Lawmakers in the US decided not to develop a national strategy (or even point of view) on biology, artificial intelligence and automation. We are currently tracking 300 trends across 25 different industry sectors. Here’s an inventory of some of our initial key findings for 2019: For better or worse, regulation is coming in 2019. Even if proposals for regulation stall or ultimately fail to pass, going through the process will prove a serious distraction and cause pain for big tech companies. China will assert prolific dominance in 2019 across multiple areas: economics, technology, infrastructure, data collection and mining, artificial intelligence, bioengineering and diplomacy. We should anticipate data breaches originating from China rather than treating each case as new and novel. Russia will similarly continue efforts to influence citizens in Western democracies using a variety of techniques. Smartphone sales will start to decline; smart peripherals will see a bump. We expect to see many new kinds of wearables: connected performance clothing, headbands, shoes. We’ll see the convergence of several game changing technologies, such as artificial intelligence, genomics and quantum computing and encryption. We’ll see further consolidation across media and tech. Interfaces won’t just be screens that we look at. In 2019 we’ll begin to see new kinds of interfaces: biophysical, soundwave, light, gesture and of course, voice. We’ll start to reframe conversations around privacy rights in the wake of new connected devices and spatial computing environments. Examples: Who owns the rights to my face? What if my face gets hacked? Do the walls of an office––the physical walls––have the right to privacy? From Future Today Institute https://futuretodayinstitute.com

The announcement the first week of April from China that the country would impose retaliatory tariffs on 128 U.S. products sent shockwaves across U.S. agriculture, especially in California. Among the Chinese targets are some of the biggest money crops in San Benito County and southern Santa Clara County—fruit, nuts and wine. The Chinese announcement followed the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on some $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. In its statement, China did not indicate when the tariffs would go into effect but said it would implement them in two parts. The first part would affect 120 U.S. products valued at $977 million, including fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and wine, with a 15 percent tariff. The second part would cover eight U.S. products worth nearly $2 billion, including pork, with a 25 percent tariff. China said if it fails to reach an agreement with the United States, then it would place tariffs on the first part of the list. MAY

Gavilan College Student Vets of America hit the streets in drag in downtown Hollister on April 28 to benefit Emmaus House and Community Solutions Programs supporting victims of domestic violence. The students were among 175 volunteers and walkers to “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.” Ray Lopez, one of the founders of the veterans’ group said they began participating in the benefit three years ago. The walkers raised more than $10,000 for the charities. Community Solutions program manager Erica Elliot said her agency serves survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking and works with Emmaus House, which operates shelter for women and children. Elliot said the first aim of the event is to raise awareness around the issue of sexual violence.
“The second is an opportunity for the community to get involved and stand together to show that sexual violence is not OK.” JUNE
San Benito Rodeo is 85th
Visitors and residents lined the streets of downtown Hollister Saturday, June 16, for the San Benito County Saddle Horse Parade. The event, in its 85th year, kicked off the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo, which will run June 22-24 at Bolado Park and Event Center in Tres Pinos. In addition to class eliminations, cattle sorting and roping, a number of family-friendly events are scheduled during the rodeo weekend, including a Western Art and Tack Show, the Mariachi Alma De Mexico Band, a taco bar, and wine and beer tasting. Hungry ranchers can get their fill at the Cowboy BBQ dinner catered by Mansmith’s. JULY
Motorcyclists visit after holiday
The City of Hollister earlier this year rejected plans for a Fourth of July motorcycle festival, but that didn’t stop hundreds of Harley riders from descending on San Benito Street on July 7 in an informal, impromptu communal gathering of leather-clad enthusiasts. The nearly 150 “hogs” and their riders filled downtown, and visited the iconic Johnnie’s bar and other local restaurants (and gas stations) in homage to a more restless visitation by bikers 71 years ago. Police reported no increase in weekend incidents. AUGUST
New homes for farm workers
The $26 million, 80-unit Vista Del Oro apartment complex should be finished by October, providing subsidized housing for San Benito farmworkers. The apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms, will be restricted to low-income farmworkers. Applicants who earn 50 percent of the 2015 median income in San Benito County would pay $698 a month for a onebedroom apartment, $838 a month for a two-bedroom and $968 a month for a three-bedroom unit.
Vista de Oro’s five buildings will have 16 one-bedroom, 40 twobedroom and 24 threebedroom units. The project, at 1480 San Juan Road on eight acres of land, was approved by the Hollister City Council by a unanimous in 2015. SEPTEMBER
Council says no election for District 1
On Aug. 20, the council voted 3-1, with Mayor Ignacio Velazquez opposed, to appoint Ray Friend’s successor and not allow District 1 voters to pick his replacement. Friend said he was told by Black that the first meeting where he could announce his resignation would be Aug. 7, because the Hollister City Council was out of session for the month of July. The council voted during the first week of October to appoint Planning Commissioner Carol Lenoir to the seat. Velazquez voted against her appointment. OCTOBER
First steps for ‘the 400 Block’
A Hollister Planning Commission vote Sept. 27 set stalled revised plans for the “400 Block” back in motion. The commission unanimously approved the site and architectural application for a “philanthropic building” and mixed-use space at the site. The City Cou ncil may finally be voting on these plans for the space as early as January 2019. The Community Foundation for San Benito County and the Del Curto Brothers Group were approved for a joint development of the site in 2017. The community foundation intends to build a philanthropic building for a new headquarters and for offices of county nonprofit organizations. The Del Curto Brothers Group is set to build a three-story commercial and mixed-use structure next door. Following the Planning Commission vote, the developers say they are set to bring back a tentative map for approval by the commission. After the tentative map is approved, the developers have two years to produce a final map that will be reviewed by the city’s engineering department prior to City Council consideration. ➝ San Benito, 11

Mayor West’s death is ruled a suicide Jacqueline McCool
Velazquez and Gillio.
Velazquez and Resendiz.
Mayor and friends Mayor Ignacio Velazquez had much to celebrate following the Nov. 6 elections. At left, he congratulates former Holister CIty Councilmember Jim Gillio, who was elected a San Benito County supervisor. Gillio had been a consistent opponent of Velazquez when he was a council member. In the same election, Rolan Resendiz, who said in the campaign he supported the mayor on several issues such as the 400 block deveopment, is congratulated by Velazquez as a new member of the City Council.

presence will be greatly missed.” Flores said the Dec. 18 vote would have happened at the same time regardless of West’s passing. As for how Flores feels about being appointed mayor, he said, “I’m excited, it’s a big job. There’s a lot of things that need to be done, and I’m up for the challenge.” Flores said the issues he hopes to address during his time in office are water, streets and safety. He previously served on
the city’s planning commission and was sworn in at the Dec. 18 meeting for his first term as a council member before the vote for mayor. Flores said he hopes to take personal matters and opinions out of city politics in order to take care of pressing issues. “I’m open to any ideas,” said Flores. “We’re a small enough town that we can have that kind of input.”

New taxes, romaine scare in 2018 ➝ San Benito, 8
With the two-year time limit, this could take place any time from 2019 to 2021. NOVEMBER
New council members win
The tax will aid with plans to widen Highway 25
into a four-lane expressway, with less access to residential streets. Measure H is a business license tax ordinance for unincorporated parts of the county. Its passage means an increase in government services like law enforcement, fire service and road maintenance. The ballot question asked voters, “Shall
the proposed business license tax ordinance be adopted and enacted to
impose a business license tax at a rate of $30 to $118 per business, 66 cents to $7.80 per employee, and 10 cents per ton of minerals depleted.” DECEMBER
Romaine probe rattles farmers
Lettuce growers along the Central Coast, including San Benito County, were in the crosshairs of federal investigators Nov. 26, less than a week after the government warned consumers, grocers and restaurants nationwide to destroy all romaine lettuce. In a statement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Monday, “Based on further discussions with the leafy greens industry and with
agricultural authorities, we have begun to narrow the location in which we believe the contaminated romaine in the current outbreak was grown. The FDA on Nov. 26 announced new steps to help consumers better identify where their romaine is grown through voluntary labeling. “Romaine lettuce entering the market will now be labeled with a harvest location and a harvest date,” the FDA announced. In San Benito County, romaine lettuce is the second biggest crop, yielding nearly 50,000 tons per year, and in terms of crop value, approximately $33 million, according to the most recent county crop report.
Barry Holtzclaw
Mayor Ignacio Velazquez won re-election on Nov. 6, while newcomer Rolan Resendiz unseated in District 2 incumbent Mickie Solorio Luna. The campaign was contentious, with personal attacks on Resendiz by Luna’s supporters. Despite endorsements from prominent political figures in the community, Luna, a staunch member of the pro-development council majority, lost to Resendiz’s grassroots campaign.
County measures G and H both passed. Measure G’s passage enacts a one-cent sales tax, raising approximately $16 million annually over 30 years, according to the ballot question.

new labels to romaine lettuce.

San Benito alum earns top honor TWO COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ARE SWORN IN Staff report
San Benito High School 2018 graduate Rolando Pablo Lorenzo was back on campus Dec. 13 to receive his “Every Student Succeeding” award from the Association of California School Administrators. Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum presented the award to Lorenzo, who was honored by Baler staff, administrators and teachers during a ceremony in
the district meeting room. Not knowing a word of English upon his arrival in San Benito County from Guatemala on his own at age 14, he was placed in an English Language Development class offered by the SBHS Migrant Program’s evening summer school program prior to starting ninth grade. With the help of his teachers, tutorials and guidance from the SBHS Migrant Education Program staff, Lorenzo finished his first year of high school with a 3.5 GPA. Throughout high school, from which he graduated with honors,
he worked full time, carried a full academic load, taking seven classes some semesters, and attended evening summer school classes. Lorenzo is attending Gavilan College and has plans to become a lawyer.
Donation for Life Skills

High school building boom in ‘18
High school building boom
New Sunnyslope school
While the preK-8 district’s plan is to build on its cache of school sites, San Benito High School District expanded and upgraded facilities on its massive 120-acre campus throughout 2018, with more coming in the new year. Thanks to a pair of voter-approved bond measures as well as statematching funds in some cases, San Benito’s list of enhancements was plentiful in 2018 including: new visual and performing arts and academic buildings;
In June 2018, the Hollister School District board unanimously approved a $5 million deal to purchase a 12-acre parcel of land on the corner of Sunnyslope and Fairview roads in the Santana Ranch development, where the district plans to build a new transitional-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school to meet the needs of a growing population.

The on-again, off-again criminal investigation that began in 2017 took twists and turns throughout 2018. The criminal case was finally closed late this year, and in the civil case, Dabo never paid a $1.5 million civil judgment from November 2017. Dabo decided to not seek re-election and ended his term on the county school board after more than 30 years

On the horizon in 2019 and beyond for are projects that include an Associated Student Body and Student Union Building and a multi-purpose room, kitchen and cafeteria.

FIELDS OF DREAMS The new athletic complex at San Benito High School. New building and bond funds also will come in 2019 at the college level. In July 2018, Gavilan College’s Board of Trustees approved a $248 million bond measure for the Nov. 6 election ballot, which passed despite some pullback from local voters who felt betrayed by promises of the past and will have a major impact on the community college that serves south Santa Clara and San
Benito counties—namely a new satellite campus in San Benito County. Gavilan’s board also welcomed two new members in its Hollister districts, with high school teacher Jeanie Wallace and Gavilan alumna Irma González winning seats in November. Both promised more transparency and open line of communication with stakeholders as the latest bond measure projects are decided in the new year.

New softball field
With a target completion date of spring 2019, San Benito High School’s brand-new softball field already resembles a Balers’ field of dreams. The Measure U-funded, state-of-the-art facility is allturf field with a clay pitcher’s mound and includes doublewide batting cages, a doublewide bullpen on the home side, a new scoreboard and three bleachers with a 180
spectator capacity. The softball facility also is equipped with a netted backstop and storage area. On the field, there is the letter “H” embedded in centerfield turf and “Haybaler” behind home plate. It is part of the larger athletics complex currently under construction on the south campus. San Benito High School’s sprawling campus encompasses 120 acres.

THEY GOT GAME Chloe Heen, Kaiya Dickens and Alyssa Ito have been instrumental in leading the San Benito High girls basketball team to its best start through 10 games (8-2) in several years. The Balers have scored 60 points in a game, something they never accomplished last season. GIRLS BASKETBALL
Balers in it to win it SAN BENITO LOOKS TO ONCE AGAIN CONTEND FOR LEAGUE TITLE emanuel lee Sports Editor
Robert Eliason
Kaiya Dickens got the ball on the left wing, dribbled to the top of the key and drained a 3-pointer—just the way the play was drawn up by Mitch Burley, the longtime San Benito High girls basketball coach. Dickens’ shot—it bounced straight up after initially hitting the rim before coming down and through the net—with a couple of seconds left in the first overtime period against Cupertino on Dec. 15 tied the game to force double overtime. From there, the Balers took control en route to a thrilling 57-53 victory. The result marked the fifth time in which San Benito had scored 55 or more points in a game this year. Last season, the Balers scored 55 or more points in a game just two times. The turnaround is a testament to the team’s vast improvement from a season ago. The added talent and ability to score have translated directly into the win column, as the Balers improved to 8-2 after the Cupertino game. “We’re definitely a more skilled team this year, and I think we work harder than in years past,” said senior Alyssa Ito, who has been the team’s starting point guard since her freshman year. “We’re pretty pumped up and feeling pretty good this season. We haven’t been terrible the last couple of years, but since I’ve been here we haven’t been close to being this good. It’s pretty nice to win most of your games.” San Benito had a fifth-place finish sandwiched in between a
pair of third-place finishes in the Gabilan Division covering the last three years. Judging by the way the team has looked so far, it would be stunning if the Balers weren’t contending for the championship this season. With a starting lineup of Ito, shooting guard Chloe Heen, forwards Lorin Lopes and Dickens and center Jay Trejo—along with key reserves Drew Barragan and Mackenzie Honeycutt— San Benito can score inside, outside and in the mid-range area, something it didn’t have the ability to do in the last several years. Ito is as solid as ever, able to break full-court pressure should an opponent try to utilize that tactic against the Balers. “The difference this year is when we break the press now, we have a lot of different players who can score and make the other team pay for pressing us,” Ito said. Dickens, who started last season as a freshman, has impressed her teammates with her ability to score and be downright dominant rebounding the ball. “Kaiya is a beast,” Ito said. “I think she is stronger than ever and has been stronger than any girl we’ve faced from another team we’ve played this year. I don’t even know how she comes up with rebounds sometimes. There will be four girls around her and she’ll be the one coming down with it. It’s crazy watching how good she’s been.” Dickens has a knack for the ball, positions herself in the right spot and takes to instruction well. On the game-tying 3-pointer against Cupertino, Dickens looked like she was in no hurry, a mark of a player who knows the situation. She calmly drained the 3-pointer despite a defender being draped on her, catapulting the team to victory. Barragan hit a couple of clutch free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, something the Monte Vista Christian-transfer has had
POISED Balers sophomore Kaiya Dickens has been dominant on the boards this season and prolific offensively.

a knack for doing this season. “Drew versus Cupertino made 5 of 6 free throws and hit a jumper that pushed us over the edge,” Ito said “She does that stuff in games a lot, where she’ll make a shot when we really need it.”
Huge improvement
The biggest improver has been Heen, who didn’t receive much playing time last year as a junior but has come on strong this season. Heen can flat-out shoot the ball, and if she gets hot, watch out. Lopes is another returning senior who impacts the game with her ability to play tough defense and be tenacious on the boards. Trejo knows how to be ferocious on the glass as well, and her offensive game is underrated. “She grabs a lot of rebounds and every once in a while she decides that hey, ‘I’m going to score this one,’” Ito said. “Once she decides that, she’s unstoppable. She might get a little nervous sometimes when she gets the ball inside, and will look for me and Chloe. But once she starts taking the ball herself and keeps it, she’ll score a lot of points.”
Honeycutt’s strengths lie in her ability to get the job done without it showing up in the box score. Every team needs players like Honeycutt, who go about their business with a workmanlike attitude. “She’s a really smart player who doesn’t score but doesn’t turn the ball over,” Ito said. “That’s what we need, and she comes in and does what she needs to do to help the team.” Ito has been helping the team for four years. It seemed just like yesterday when Ito was a freshman dazzling onlookers with her ability to control the pace of the game, get to the basket off dribble penetration and playing with a maturity beyond her years. With her best supporting cast yet, Ito can’t wait for the season to unfold. Ito actually fouled out of the Cupertino game—resulting from an error from the scorekeeper, Dickens said—making the team’s victory all the more impressive. Had Ito fouled out in any game in the last three years with the outcome still to be decided, the Balers would’ve had
little chance of winning. However, the Balers are stronger this season at every position, giving them high hopes. “Of course we don’t want to be in that position, but winning that game without Alyssa gave us even more confidence,” Dickens said. “She’s the one that brings the ball up and past the defense, and with her not in the game we all had to step up and get the job done.” Dickens’ clutch, game-tying 3-pointer wasn’t the first time she’s pulled off last-second heroics. In the team’s loss to Santa Clara in last year’s Central Coast Section playoffs, Dickens hit a late 3-pointer to make things interesting. The trey she made against Cupertino was something out of a dream, a terrific play in a career that has already been filled with memorable moments. “We ran that play exactly how coach drew it up,” she said. “I was so excited and you can see it on my face from what my friends told me. It was pretty awesome, but it felt like the ball was up in the air for 10 hours before it dropped in.”

Partnership to provide pediatric hospitalists lending vital support to pediatric services and excellence in pediatric care.
GILROY DISPATCH | MORGAN HILL TIMES | HOLLISTER FREE LANCE
Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital (HHMH) is pleased to announce a partnership with Pediatrix Medical Group of California, a MEDNAX affiliate that also provides services to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. Pediatric hospitalists from “The importance of this Pediatrix will begin supporting women’s and children’s services at program is placing quality HHMH as early as February 2019. physicians in the Hollister Pediatrix and HHMH will work together to establish a premier community to establish pediatric hospitalist program in Hollister, increasing community continuity of care.” access to top-quality pediatric care. Pediatrix will provide highly trained hospital-based pediatric hospitalists to assist with high-risk newborn deliveries, help determine when a newborn requires transport out for critical care, and support the care of well newborns in the nursery, as well as inpatient children and teens. Pediatric hospitalists will also be on hand to provide onsite consultative services to attending medical staff and ER physicians and to help stabilize patients in emergency situations. Good Samaritan Hospital’s neonatology group has, for many years, been assisting HHMH with the stabilization and transport of high-risk newborns, and supported physicians with telephone consultations. “We have a long-standing relationship with Hazel Hawkins, built over the last 10 to 15 years, and this is the next step,” said Dr. Richard Powers, MEDNAX affiliated neonatologist and Chief of Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital. HHMH pursued a partnership with Pediatrix due to the need for full-time pediatric support at the hospital. Currently most pediatricians in Hollister have established office-based practices and cannot staff the hospital. “Pediatrix has a history and national reputation for providing excellent care to newborns and children,” said Ken Underwood, HHMH CEO. “This partnership will bring experience and vital support to our top-tier Women’s Center and ER, and to children admitted to Hazel Hawkins Hospital”

933 HOL - Trustee Sale NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE No. 17-242-B: YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST DATED October 5, 2006. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. On JANUARY 4, 2019 AT 10:00 am, at the gated North Market Street entrance of the Superior Courthouse, 191 N. First Street, San Jose, Ca. 95113, EXCEL FINANCIAL, as Trustee, will sell at public auction
to the highest bidder for cash (payable at the time of sale in lawful money of the United States) the following described property situated in the County of San Benito, State of California, described more fully within said Deed of Trust. This Notice of Trustee’s Sale is being recorded concurrently with our Notice of Trustee’s Sale 17-242-A in Santa Clara County, which is also secured by the same Note. Pursuant to California Civil Code Section 2924g(b) the public auction sale of all of the property will take place in Santa Clara County. The street address and other common designation of the real property described above is purported to be: 353 Barnheisl Road, Hollister, Ca. 95023 APN: 016-020-004 The undersigned disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation shown here. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee’s Sale (auction). You will be bidding on a lien. Although you will receive title to the property, placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction DOES NOT automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction you will be, or may be, responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and amount of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the County Recorder’s Office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times, pursuant to California Civil Code Section 2924g. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you would like to know whether your sale date has been postponed, and/or the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (408) 374-7204 or visit www.foreclosureco. com and check Trustee’s Sale #17-242-B. Information about postponements that are short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale time may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or online. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied regarding title, possession or encumbrances to satisfy the obligations secured by and pursuant to the Power of Sale conferred in the Deed of Trust executed by Sandra C. Yuste, a married woman as to her sole and separate property, as Trustor, Recorded on October 24, 2006 as Instrument No. 2006-0015918 in the Office of the County Recorder of San Benito County and Re-Recorded Recorded on September 3, 2009 as Instrument No. 20090008359 in the Office of the County Recorder of San Benito County.
