The Local Agency Formation Committee for San Benito County narrowly approved a request from the City of Hollister to annex 49.5 acres. The committee voted to annex the property southwest of Highway 25 and extended the annexation along North Chappell Road so there were no pockets of city land outside city limits. The annexation and “sphere of influence” change passed the commission by a 3-2 vote. Commissioners Ignacio Velazquez and Jamie De La Cruz voted against the request. Commissioners Anthony Botelho, Richard Bettencourt and Dan De Vries voted to approve. The San Benito County Local Agency Formation Committee (LAFCO) is the government agency that approves or denies annexation requests from cities. Commissioners include local politicians and community representatives. Hollister Mayor Ignacio Velasquez is the chair of the commission. Other commissioners who voted at the Jan. 10 meeting include county supervisors Jaime De La Cruz and Anthony Botelho and the committee’s public members, Richard Bettencourt

Pinnacles rangers face cleanup chore LONG 35-DAY SHUTDOWN TAKES ITS TOLL AT NATIONAL PARK SITE Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
Park rangers returned to Pinnacles National Park this week to tackle repairs and maintenance to both
manmade and natural features along the spectacular vistas left unattended during the 35-day federal government “shutdown.” The park, located in southwest San Benito County, had weathered a couple of severe winter storms, and had remained open to hikers and campers despite the absence of rangers and the presence of vehicle barricades.
Rangers and hikers this week reported that the Balconies Cave continued to be closed to visitors due to a recent rock fall, and the area remains unstable and dangerous for visitors. Rangers reported that trees had fallen across some of the trails in the 26,600acre park. Both east and west gates were reopened Jan. 28, with vehicles
encountering some obstacles on the west side, rangers said. “With the enactment of the continuing resolution, staff at Pinnacles National Park will resume regular operations on Monday, Jan. 28,” the park reported on its Facebook page last weekend. “After 35 days of closure, time is needed to clear roadways from rockslide,
clear downed trees, open restrooms and other facilities, check fire alarm systems and ensure that the park is safe for visitors.”. On social media, park visitors this week reported a downed tree on High Peaks trail, overgrown ferns at Moses Spring and some overflowing rubbish at several locations, ➝ Pinnacles, 11

Owners promises return of Pumpkin Park UESUGI FARMS ENDS ITS FARM OPERATIONS, BUT SAYS POPULAR PATCH WILL OPEN Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
The future of Uesugi Farms may be in doubt, but its owners have assured fans of its Morgan Hill Pumpkin Park that the popular attraction would open in the fall of 2019. GIlroy-based Uesugi Farms had told creditors and announced online in lat 2018 that it would be “winding down” its
business, plant no spring crops and sell off its trucks, farm equipment and supplies to pay its creditors. A giant farm equipment sale by one creditor, Heritage Bank of Commerce, was advertised last week. The morning after that news was first reported by this newspaper in its online editions on Jan. 22, the Aiello family posted a notice on the Facebook page of the Pumpkin Park that the venue would be in business in 2019: “Good morning, everybody. In light of the media frenzy this morning, we want all of you to rest assured that we will be open for business this fall. See you Saturday, Sept. 28!”
There was no additional explanation, and the Aiello family, which has owned Uesugi Farms for 40 years and operated the Pumpkin Park since 1982, did not respond to requests for additional information or comment. The Uesugi Pumpkin Park, at 14485 Monterey Road, is a seasonal operation that for years has attracted more than 100,000 visitors every October. It is located just inside the southern city limits of Morgan Hill, a mile north of unincorporated San Martin. Details of the ownership and management of the 2019 version of the Pumpkin Park remained unclear.
The park represents a small portion of the once far-flung vegetable growing business, which included more than 5,000 acres in production in California and Mexico, on both family-owned and land contracted to other producers. Uesugi Farms was one of the state’s largest producers of Napa cabbage, pepper and squash. In addition to money owed its lenders, the company and Aiello family members are the defendants in a lawsuit from a Mexican company which alleged Uesugi Farms owed it $1.4 million in crop payments.
The Packer, a farming industry news site, said San Antonio Horticola SA De CV, a Mexican grower, filed a lawsuit against Uesugi and the Aiellos, “claiming non-payment of more than $1.4 million for vegetables provided during the 2018 season.” Court documents report that the case is in the midst of mediation efforts, which are to occur before the end of March 2019. It is the Pumpkin Park, however, not the peppers and cabbage, that is the most recognizable local operation of Uesugi Farms. Generations of families have posed for photos in front of the
Pumpkin Pyramid, shot the pumpkin blaster, said hello to Bootsie the Bee in her Honey Hut, ridden a carousel and the Cow Train, or gotten lost in a two-acre Corn Maze. In March 2018, the Aiello family sold more than 16 acres of land in San Martin, southwest of its Pumpkin Park, to a pair of LLCs associated with local developer William Rocke Garcia. The property sits just outside Morgan Hill's city limits—the Pumpkin Park is just inside the city boundaries—where the city's long-term general plan suggests the land is suited for single-family home development.

City delays vote on recreational pot STAFF FEARS COMPETITION FROM SHOPS IN SAN JUAN BAUTISTA Jaqueline McCool Reporter
An agenda item that would have allowed recreational cannabis sales within Hollister city limits appeared as a shock to councilmembers and sparked debate among the council, staff and audience. If approved, the measure would allow sales of recreational cannabis at the two facilities that are about to open their doors in Hollister for medical sales. The dispensaries are
Monterey Bay Alternative Care, 773 San Felipe Road, and Higher Level Care, 1802 Shelton Drive. Under the proposal, the “medical” classification would be removed from the city’s existing cannabis ordinance, and recreational and medical delivery services would be permitted through the already permitted cannabis retailers. However, the word “medical” had previously been removed from the ordinance when referring to cultivation, manufacturing and other cannabis businesses. There was less dispute among council members at the Jan. 22 meeting about whether allowing cannabis to be sold in the
city was wrong or right than there was about the approach taken by staff to amend the ordinance. The council ultimately voted unanimously to table the discussion for 90 days, allowing for council members to speak to constituents in their districts and see the initial revenue reports of medicinal sales from Higher Level Care, and whether there still might be a recreational market for pot after the storefront opens sometime in the next 60 days. At the council meeting, Mayor Ignacio Velazquez expressed shock when presented with the agenda item by city staff. He said at the council meeting that when reviewing the agenda prior to the
meeting, he nearly jumped off his couch. “I cannot believe this was on here without one person calling me or any other council member and asking to bring this topic back up,” Velazquez said. He pressed staff, asking whether or not businesses or lobbyists had come to the city and asked for the ordinance to be changed. City Attorney Bill Avera assured council members the decision to place the item on the agenda came from city staff on the cannabis review committee. Avera said the staff was worried that with San Juan Bautista’s recent approval of a recreational ordinance, there would be a loss of revenue for Hollister.
“I’m not worried about losing a customer base that we’re not in the business of being in,” Velazquez told Avera. “We are not in the marijuana business; we’re in the public service business.” Because California law no longer differentiates between recreational and medical cannabis use, Hollister Police Det. Chris Wells told the council that allowing sales at the two existing facilities would aid police officers in enforcement, especially when it came to unlicensed cannabis delivery. Medical cannabis sales are allowed to individuals 18 older, recreational sales are allowed to patrons 21 and older. Council members still felt the issue needed
more community discussion, and after Sal Palma, operator of High Level Care, proposed coming back to the council after his storefront had opened, Velazquez said he felt it was a reasonable compromise. Mayor Pro Tem Marty Richman was equally skeptical about moving too quickly in allowing recreational sales, and he moved to defer the item for 90 days. Council members Carol Lenoir, Honor Spencer and Rolan Resendiz all agreed, hoping to gather more information from their constituents and city staff in the coming days. The item is set to come back to the council at its March 4 meeting.

Juvenile crime plummets
O
ver the past two decades, California’s Division of Juvenile Justice’s inmate population has fallen from 10,000 to around 660. Its annual budget is down 70 percent. Eight of its 11 detention facilities have closed. The division now spends $300,000 per year per inmate, yet three-fourths of those who are released recidivate within three years. The Division of Juvenile Justice could hardly do worse, right? Many, led by the division’s director, Chuck Supple, are cheering Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to move its function from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to the Health and Human Services Agency. The theory would be to reorient the Division of Juvenile Justice from imprisonment to services delivery, an idea liberals traditionally endorse. However, we don’t need another round of tradition. Over the last 150 years, California has alternated cycles of harshly punishing youthful offenders followed by reforms favoring services and rehabilitation. We just go back and forth. This is a time for new thinking. California’s leaders still don’t comprehend the magnitude of the state’s astonishing trends and the remarkable time we occupy. California youth have staged their own revolution. Since the early 1990s, criminal arrests of persons under age 18 have plummeted by a staggering 80 percent. In California’s 15 largest cities, including Los Angeles and Oakland, from 1990 to 2017, murder arrests of youth fell from 373 to 20. In 2017, more Californians ages 50-59 were arrested than under age 20. No one has credibly explained why teens of every demographic and locale stopped committing crime. Before we rush to reform the Division of Juvenile Justice yet again, we need solid analysis, not politician platitudes, not pleasing myths and prejudices, not selfserving credit-grabbing. Without tough, objective study, we risk doing little more than changing the Division of

Juvenile Justice’s address while retaining the same management personnel and policies that most definitely need reforming. Consider some misconceptions. Despite its “juvenile” name, the division is really an adult agency. Its latest report shows just 146 of the 661 inmates in its facilities are under age 18; more are 20 and older. The division’s growth population will be age 21-25 under new proposals in the governor’s budget. Here’s a modest alternative. Step back and view the Division of Juvenile Justice as a cog in California’s larger criminal justice, human services and environmental framework. Reorganize the the division’s Pine Grove Conservation Camp and local detention camps, which are largely empty, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s fire camps, and the California Conservation Corps into a new division that employs civilians and offenders who are assessed as low risk on projects to improve state lands and facilities. California already operates such crews, though not in optimized fashion, and has targeted the Conservation Corps for expansion. Newsom proposes more Americorps funding to aid inmates returning to society. The job training in fire management, flood control, watersheds, forestry, parks maintenance and other conservation projects, along with wages and education stipends, would address the most pressing needs of most people who wind up in the criminal justice system. There’s another, intangible benefit people who worked in conservation corps have seen from mixing people from different backgrounds on common work projects. Prisons congregate people with criminal histories. Conservation corps mix broader populations, offering greater rehabilitative potential. Prisons need reforming. Public lands desperately need work. California needs innovative government to match its youths’ revolutionary trends. Let’s explore new ideas. Mike Males is senior researcher for the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice.

Grocery shoppers are still paying more for organic food, but the price premium is falling as organic options multiply. Last year, organic food and beverages cost an average of 24 cents more per unit than conventional food, or about 7.5 percent more. That was down from a 27 cent, or 9 percent, premium in 2014. There’s a lot of variation within those numbers. The average price for a gallon of organic milk, $4.76, is 88 percent higher than the $2.53 shoppers pay for a gallon of regular milk. Organic eggs have an 86 percent premium. At $4.89 per loaf, organic bread is double the cost of regular bread. Parents buying organic baby food, on the other hand, pay just 3 percent more than they would for conventional baby food. In mid-January, a bunch of organic kale was 5 percent more than organic kale, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some organic products, like artichokes, soy milk and Granny Smith apples, may even cost less than their conventional counterparts. There are many shifting factors behind the prices for organic foods. Premiums for milk and eggs tend to be much higher, for example, because the government has very specific rules for what “organic” means. The rules have real benefits to the animal, the consumer and environment, but they do increase the price of production. Organic and conventional vegetables are grown in similar ways, so the price difference tends to be lower. Organic farmers can save money by not using pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, but they may have to pay more for workers to pull weeds or control bugs. One reason organic premiums are falling is the increase in products on the shelves. Organics used to be confined to health food stores and high-end groceries like Whole Foods, but mainstream stores are increasingly offering them. Kroger, one of the nation’s largest grocery chains, says it stocks 9,000 organic items in its stores and notched $1 billion in organic produce sales in 2017. Consumer demand also impacts prices. Right now, demand for organics is outpacing supply in many categories. U.S. sales of fast-moving consumer goods, a category that includes food, beverages and toiletries, were flat last year, but sales of organic goods jumped 9 percent, Nielsen said. Millennial households are leading that charge, as they stock up on organic milk and baby food for their children. But other generations are also buying more organic products. Overall, 88 percent of American households have bought organic food or beverages. In some cases, organics are breathing life back into dusty grocery aisles. Sales of conventional lunchmeat and cheese at the deli counter had been weakening, since consumers didn’t want to wait for them to be sliced. But buyers seeking fresh, organic options are returning to the deli. Sale of organic deli lunchmeat have risen an average of 18 percent annually over the last four years, while organic deli cheese sales are up 26 percent. Schmansky said food scares, like the E. coli outbreaks traced to lettuce, are also leading some consumers to organic labels because they trust them. While price premiums may continue to drop, it’s difficult to say if they’ll ever go away entirely. Looser government policies and crop insurance programs better tailored to small organic farms could help lower those premiums, Koory said. A recession could also lower consumer demand for organics, and therefore their price premiums. But if the last recession is any guide, those premiums could bounce back quickly. Dee Ann Durbin, California Department of Food and Agriculture

San Benito High School students Alanah Martinez, Ian Sills, Evan Rosales and Faith Hernandez attended and participated in the Student Advisory Board on Legislation in Education Jan. 14-16 at the State Capitol. At SABLE, students identified and discussed specific problems in the state’s education system. For three days, they worked long hours, expanding on these issues and brainstorming solutions. On the last day, students incorporated the solutions that they had developed into a proposal and presented to the California Senate Education Committee. In the past, results from SABLE have included altering statewide graduation requirements for high school students, and changes in curriculum. This is the
Hollister Rotary has opened its scholarship application period for local students with a deadline of March 31. High school students in San Benito County are encouraged to apply for the Rotary Club of Hollister’s annual college scholarship program, according to an announcement. “Each year, the Rotary raises funds to send future leaders to college,” it states. “We believe that our future is in our youth and value the investment to make our world a better place with educational boosts.”
Local scholarships
The San Benito High School Career Center recently released the Local Scholarships List to seniors. “Each year, organizations and members from our community offer
generous scholarships to students seeking financial assistance to further their education at a two-, four-year college/ university or technical/ trade school,” according to SBHS staff. Application deadlines vary, but the bulk of them fall on March 8. “As students await their acceptance letters from college, now is a good time to research and begin the scholarship application process,” according to SBHS staff. Most scholarships use the Common Application, which requires three letters of recommendation, a student activity sheet, a personal statement, a current copy of the student’s high school transcript and additional essays. All scholarships can be viewed on the SBHS Career Center website, which contains a complete list of all application requirements and deadlines. Many nationwide scholarships can also be found on Fastweb.com and Scholarships.com.

red line, so we also had to disable that feature in each Chromebook,” Myers said. A computer program will also allow student participants—an estimated 160 total (80 each day)—along with their families, to know right away how they scored. The top 20 advance to the championship rounds Feb. 6-7. The previous record number of competitors was 130, according to Myers. “We used to have a team of people grade the handwritten answers for each student later that same night,” said Myers, a former kindergarten teacher. “This way we don’t have to incorrectly ding someone if a ‘d’ looks like a ‘j’ or something of that nature based on their handwriting.” The annual bee, which
is open to all county students whether attending public or private schools, is broken into two gradelevel divisions, with the fourth- through sixthgraders opening up the competition Wednesday and the seventh and eighth graders competing the following night. Each student registered the day of the competition and then logged on to their Chromebook using their name, grade and school before the 50 spelling words were read off. The facilitator first read the word by itself and then used each in a sentence. “I’ll know the top 20 that second so I can announce them right away,” Myers said. In the championship round, there will be only one winner in each grade level division who advances to the statewide spelling bee. They also receive a new iPad
from Hollister Rotary and an all-expenses paid trip to the state bee. The younger division winner heads to San Joaquin County for the state prelims, while the middle school county champion goes to Marin. “It’s exciting not only to see the kids do well but also having the kids come together from all the different public and private schools within San Benito County,” Myers said. The spelling bee kicks off a number of countywide events organized by the SBCOE including: • Feb. 13, 5-7pm, County Arts Showcase, at the Veterans Memorial Building; • March 12, 7pm, County Music Festival, at San Benito High School; and • March 21, 2-7pm, STEAM Fair, at the Veterans Memorial Building.

told park staff, “I know you had to post this without being paid. I know some of you are working without pay behind the scenes to manage things. I appreciate all that you are doing and enduring for the public good.” During the lapse in federal appropriations, Pinnacles National Park remained accessible to visitors; however, services

Visitors should park in designated spots only and avoid parking off road, as hot vehicle undercarriages could ignite dry grass.” The western entrance was closed throughout the

Councilman warns of housing growth perils ➝ City, 1
members, Richard Bettencourt and Dan De Vries. The vote to annex the full 49.5 acres is contingent on the outcome of a public hearing for land owners in the two parcels annexed that were suggested by LAFCO staff, but not requested by the city. The protest hearing is scheduled for March 21. Hollister’s request had initially included 34.2 acres of land, but the committee chose to adhere to LAFCO staff recommendations and annex the additional 15.3 acres to avoid creating pockets of land that would remain outside the city. LAFCO staff said if the 15.3 acres was not annexed, it would have likely come
before the committee at a later date to be brought into Hollister limits. The land annexed is identified by the county as prime agricultural farmland. While the committee’s mission is to preserve farmland, it also works to create contiguous “smart growth.” The San Benito LAFCO website says the committee’s mission is to “encourage the orderly growth of local communities, preserve agricultural lands, discourage urban sprawl and assure efficient local government service.” LAFCO staff said the city of Hollister had shown that the annexation would promote contiguous growth, discourage urban sprawl and be able to provide enough government
services. However, LAFCO LAFCO meeting expressed staff member Bill Nicholson concerns about the effects did say the project did not of new homes and developprovide a mitigation plan ments on the city’s roads. that would completely pre- Rolan Resendiz, newly vent the loss of prime farm- elected council member for land and or prevent traf- District 2, urged the comfic impacts on the missioners to vote neighborhood. no on the annexAccording to the ation request. The Jan. 10 meeting also became fodder for past grievances. Mayor Ignacio Velazquez and former mayor, Victor Gomez, head of Pinnacle Strategies consulting, exchanged barbs during the meeting. The two have a history of disagreement when it comes to growth in the city. Velazquez has routinely voted against development projects beginning later in his first term in office. Gomez spoke at the meeting on behalf of the developers hoping to build homes on the newly annexed property. Gomez had campaigned against Velazquez last fall, is a lobbyist for cannabis cultivators and has been a strong advocate the plan for the 400 block of San
Benito Street approved by last year’s council. He told the committee that Velazquez had voted in favor of the project when it came to the Hollister City Council in 2015. Velazquez later told the committee that his vote had been a mistake, but had accompanied a plea with city officials to implement “smart growth” tactics. Velazquez has frequently advocated for an updated version of the city’s general plan and ran on a platform of curbing growth until Hollister was able to plan for expansion. “We cannot keep making decisions on the hope that somebody else is gonna do the right thing,” said Velazquez. “We have to make decisions according to a plan.”

Despite moving up two weight classes from a year ago, Ethan Rossi is having his best season yet. The San Benito High junior entered the week at No. 3 in the Central Coast Section rankings at 126 pounds, having posted some solid results at the Apple Cider Tournament in Watsonville and the Firebaugh Tournament. “I’m doing much better than in previous seasons,” he said. “Previous seasons I had injuries and as a freshman I was 93 pounds wrestling at 106 (the lowest weight division), so that was tough. But I got a good growth spurt, put on some muscle and now I’m at a good weight.” Having jumped two weight classes in a year, Rossi feels stronger even though he is going up against bigger opponents. The 5-foot-6 Rossi has peace of mind being in a heavier division, as he can make weight without having to stress out about it, as was the case at 106. “I don’t have to cut as much as I used to,” he said. “I still have to watch what I eat, but I don’t have to worry and cut as much.” In terms of the major differences of competing in a heavier weight class, Rossi said he has to
be more aware of every situation, knowing one slight mishap can result in him getting caught for a near-fall or pin. “I have to always be on alert and think of moves,” he said. “If I take a bad shot against these guys at 126, I’ll pay for it. So I have to set my shots up better and take more shots from the outside. Going into the season I wasn’t worried at all moving up in weight. I figured weight wouldn’t matter as long as my technique and skill were there.” Rossi made good use of his time in the off-season, honing his technique and overall skill set. Rossi spent plenty of time working on setting up his shots effectively. “Before I didn’t think about what I was shooting for,” he said. “Now I have to look and set it up more. … My bottom game has also gotten better. I’ve been working on wrist control off the whistle, being smarter and knowing the position I’m in and not working into a worse position.” When Rossi gets an opponent on the mat, he does a great job of keeping him there. Rossi likes to incorporate arm bars and quick tight waist moves off the whistle in the hopes of gaining an instant advantage. In the neutral position, Rossi likes going for the outside single leg takedown to set up a series of moves and finish off an opponent. Rossi strengths lie in the top and neutral positions; however, he’s eager to improve his bottom game as well. “My bottom is OK,” he said. “It’s not my best game, but I can catch people if they make a mistake and get an escape out of it.”
BREAKING THROUGH San Benito High junior Ethan Rossi entered the week as the Central Coast Section’s third-ranked wrestler in the 126-pound division. Rossi finished fourth in league and sixth in CCS last year. Rossi said his finest moment of the season thus far came in a semifinal loss in the Firebaugh Tournament. Facing a tough opponent, Rossi dropped a 6-5 decision. However, Rossi was able to land some excellent shots against a quality opponent and simply ran out of time in defeat. “In each tournament Ethan winds up in one of the toughest weight classes,” Balers coach Steven Salcedo said. “I consider him one of our best wrestlers even though he is not placing the highest. Some of his best matches have been losses. But he’s a competitor and is right there on the cusp of getting over the hump (in
terms of) getting to the finals of tournaments. If he keeps wrestling the way he has been, I’m sure he’ll be in a good spot toward the end of the year.” Rossi hopes that spot will be in the finals of the league and Central Coast Section Championships. Rossi finished fourth in the league tournament and sixth in the CCS Championships last season at 106. Rossi has come a long way. In his freshman season, Rossi earned a spot on the varsity team only to struggle and get dropped to the junior varsity squad. He went on to win the league title at the JV level, setting himself up for a solid
sophomore season last year. Rossi said Spring Grove assistant principal Andrew Parra—who was Rossi’s wrestling coach during Rossi’s middle school years—was the reason Rossi started wrestling in the sixth grade. “He’s the biggest reason I continued wrestling; it was because of him,” Rossi said. “He took me to work out with him after practices, showed me more moves on how to get out of different situations, went on runs and to tournaments in San Jose and Santa Clara. He introduced me to the Razorbacks (club wrestling program) with coach Salcedo. It was all a positive experience.”

942 HOL - Public Notice NOTICE OF PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT IN A FLOODPLAIN The California Housing & Community Development Department (HCD) has conditionally approved a grant for the City of Hollister in San Benito County California 17-CDBG12098. The grant is for the construction of a 15 foot wide 4,800 foot linear River Park Trail between a new 0.32 acre staging area at the southern corner of Bridge Road and Bridgevale Road and the recently constructed Apricot Park. A 15 foot wide pedestrian and bicycle trail will pass under the existing San Juan Hollister Bridge and connect to an existing unpaved levee maintenance road for the Industrial Waste Water Treatment Plant (IWTP) where it will connect to the western end
of Apricot Lane and the Apricot Lane Park. The trail will be constructed with base rock overlaid with decomposed granite mixed with beeswax. The beeswax will prevent erosion and reduce maintenance costs. An existing six foot cyclone perimeter fence on the levees will be relocated to prevent pedestrian access to the IWTP and replaced with an eight foot wrought iron fence. The west side of the trail will be improved with four foot high split rail fencing. Existing debris on the southern perimeter of the IWTP includes riprap and cement debris that would be relocated to an unused area of the IWTP. Native trees will be planted along the trail to provide shade and enhance habitat. Ten benches will be installed along the trail. The City of Hollister has additional information on this project, and is preparing a review to determine if there are any practicable alternatives to locating the project in the floodplain, and to identify potential adverse impacts that may result from this project, as well as mitigation measures that may be necessary to protect the floodplain. Written comments regarding this issue should be received within 15 days of publication of this notice in order to be considered by the City in its decision process. Comments should be sent to the attention of Mary M. Paxton, Program Manager, City of Hollister, 375 Fifth Street, Hollister, California 95023. Publish Friday, February 1, 2019 (PUB HF 2/1)

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. orn from mill town roots and raised by a single parent, this man of simple upbringing rose above what many might consider an inevitable destiny of an undistinguished life to be an executive, business owner and someone who affected the lives of many people. As a young man, he played baseball, worked the cotton fields and attended high school in North Carolina. Something drove him to join the Air Force and he participated in the Berlin Airlift after World War II. That led to attending North Carolina State University and then on to attending the University of Southern California where he graduated with a Masters in aeronautical engineering. If he did nothing else in his life, he was already a success. But this was only the beginning. Defense contractors were the rage in Southern California in the late 1950s. He joined that industry by working for Northrop as an engineer and then for Ford Aerospace as an engineer and executive. At Ford, he led development of precision guided munitions systems which were the predecessor of what is still used today by the American military. Whatever your thoughts may be on this subject, this technology saved many lives by eliminating what is commonly referred to as collateral damage. After taking early retirement from Ford, he joined the former FMC in San Jose for 10 years. But this still wasn’t the end. After a long and distinguished career in the defense contracting industry, retiring to a life of leisure just wasn’t in the cards. The drive was still there and a fencing business was started. Starting your own business is a big task for a young man, let alone someone who many might think should be enjoying life in a rocker on the porch. Not the case here. As a contractor, he further distinguished himself as someone who is responsive, trustworthy and reliable. A rare set of traits in the industry. The work persona hid a gentle man. He could present a stern and demanding face but was a different person on the home front. He was a man that enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, a sunset, a mountain peak and Tom Jones. Not much was better than a favorite TV show and a drink. He was kind and considerate. One that would do anything for you. Not one to judge or hold a grudge. He was civil and gracious to everyone. A man of integrity, honesty and worthy of one’s trust. Everyone he met deserved and got respect and it was reciprocated by those that got to know him. He was someone you could look up to, someone you would want to be like, someone you would want your children to grow up to be. This brilliant, gentle man is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, a son, Kevin (Joanne), and daughters Christine Gaither (Rob) and Madeline Flanagan (Brian), 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. This amazing man touched so many lives and will be sorely missed. There is a new star in the heavens and heaven is so lucky to have him now. A private scattering of ashes will take place at a later date. Contributions, if desired, can be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
