SJB hires new exec DON REYNOLDS TO TAKE OVER FOR ED TEWES Jaqueline McCool Reporter

Robert Eliason
The San Juan Bautista City Council was set to approve an employment agreement for a new city manager, Don Reynolds. Reynolds currently works as the assistant public works director in Salinas. Reynolds told the Free Lance he’s spent three decades in public service, working for 12 years in Moorpark before moving to Salinas. His start date is planned for July 2, according to a press release detailing Reynolds’ hiring. He is expected to be paid $132,000 his first year. Reynolds will succeed Ed Tewes, who acted as interim city manager after
OLD-TIME MELODIES Janet Martini entertained visitors to San Juan Bautista with tunes on her accordian.
History comes alive Robert Eliason
As San Juan Bautista embarks on a summer-long celebration of its 150th anniversary, visitors and residents stepped back to the town’s early days for the second time this month. After the June 1 Living History day, mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorian ladies, horse-drawn vehicles, old-time crafts and down-home recipes came to life again June 15-16 at the State Historic Park’s Early Days. On June 23, the party continues in San Juan Bautista as the Old Mission holds its annual fiesta in the state park with food, music and dancing. The fiesta celebrates the European migrant families of the Anza Expedition who passed through this valley in June 1776 on their way to establish the Presidio in San Francisco. SJB picks alternate school solar project PANELS WILL BE ‘LEAST IMPACT’ TO SAN JUAN SCHOOL FIELD Scott Forstner Reporter
The Aromas-San Juan Unified School District’s Board of Trustees has approved an alternative plan for the positioning of solar panels in the playing field at San Juan School as part of a three-school energy conservation project.
The board, after taking in concerns from the local San Juan School community and reviewing all options, last month approved “a version that was least impactful” to the playing field, according to one trustee. District staff will also work with the solar installation company, ENGIE Services U.S. Inc., to assess whether the panels can be placed in front of the school gym and out to the school parking lot
to possibly keep the San Juan playing field intact. Earlier in May, the board approved a $358,600 contract with ENGIE Services for the installation of solar panels at Anzar High School (2000 San Juan Highway in San Juan Bautista), Aromas School (365 Vega St. in Aromas) and San Juan School (100 Nyland Drive in San Juan Bautista). However, members of the San Juan school community—including parent
and former school board trustee Jose Flores— did not want the panels to be put on the playing field. Flores’ two children helped get 151 signatures from San Juan students and staff on a petition that opposed the solar panel installation in the field. At Anzar and Aromas, the solar panels will be located in parking lots and not in the playing field, where they’ll be placed at San Juan School. A facilities committee meeting
was held May 14 to further discuss the San Juan portion of the energy conservation project before the board voted May 23. At San Juan, two of the options are to install “approximately 650 linear feet of permanent perimeter chain link fencing to the east, west and south, 6feet in height, around the solar PV installation, which will tie to the existing fence to the north,” according to the contract.

SBHS earns honor roll designation 76 STUDENTS COMPLETE AVID PROGRAM Staff report
San Benito High School was named to the 20182019 Educational Results Partnership Honor Roll for its high achievement in student success for a second consecutive year. The program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence, is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving
student outcomes. SBHS is one of 1,834 public schools in California to be recognized. “The leadership exhibited by principal Adrian Ramirez and the entire school community has fostered a strong culture focused on student learning and achievement,” said Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum. “This honor is also indicative of the efforts made each day by our student body and the support we receive from parents and guardians.” The 2018-2019 honor roll was developed by Educational Results Partnership, a non-profit
organization that maintains the nation’s largest database on student achievement and utilizes this data to identify higher-performing schools and districts. Schools that receive the ERP Honor Roll distinction have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations. For high schools, the ERP Honor Roll recognition also includes measures of college readiness. “We are continually
striving to increase academic achievement and improve educational outcomes for all of our students,” Ramirez added. “Our teachers and administrators are fully committed and we are thrilled to see their hard work and dedication produce such positive results.”
76 SBHS students graduate through AVID program
San Benito High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program recognized the first group of 76 students to matriculate through the program in four years.
The May 30 commencement was held in a packed school auditorium, featuring a processional of the graduates, a welcome address from students Julissa Soto and Shea Wolf, and addresses from Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum and principal Adrian Ramirez. Four AVID teachers worked with 395 students in all four grades this year, including nearly 80 seniors (most who had been in AVID all four years), providing academic instruction and other support to prepare students for college eligibility. The typical AVID
student at San Benito has the potential and desire to attend a four-year college, average to high test scores, a 2.0 to 3.5 grade point average, appropriate classroom behavior, a good attendance record and work habits, and is willing to commit to studying and completing homework each night. Students must also meet one of the following criteria: be the first in their family to attend a college or university; be from a group historically underrepresented in four-year colleges, come from a low-income family, or have other special circumstances.
New SJB city manager City hires search firm leaves job in Salinas ➝ SJB manager, 1
former city manager Michael LaForge resigned. Tewes, a former Morgan Hill city manager, led the recruitment process to find Reynolds. Mayor Cesar Flores said in a city press release about Reynolds’ hiring, “Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the type of leadership and professionalism that will serve our citizens well and help San Juan Bautista meet the challenges of the future." Reynolds told the Free Lance that he’s looking forward to working with the city and

that he’s “been waiting for that phone call or 30 years.” He said he went through a rigorous application process with several rounds of interviews before being offered the job. Reynolds said his time working in the small city of Moorpark after finishing his graduate degree gave him the administrative and financial background necessary for the role of city manager along with his experience in public works in Salinas. Reynolds told the Free Lance, “The cool thing about being city manager is everyday is different.”
Staff report
The Hollister City Council unanimously approved spending $25,000 to hire a recruiting firm to find a new city manager, with City Councilmember Honor Spencer absent from the vote.
Bill Avera
The city voted to hire CPS HR Consulting, A Sacramento based firm, which, according to its website, is “an executive search is a recruitment that identifies and recruits for individuals to fill vacancies in positions of leadership in public agencies.” In April the council voted to distribute requests for proposals
to executive search firms to find qualified candidates to replace current city manager Bill Avera, who announced his November retirement at a Feb. 19 council meeting. The city formed an ad hoc committee of Mayor Ignacio Velazquez and Vice Mayor Marty Richman to help with the
city manager selection process. The whole process is expected to take 14 to 16 weeks to complete, according to the agreement. When Avera first announced his retirement, there was unanimous agreement from the council that the task of identifying candidates would be outsourced to an agency as opposed to using city staff. However, the council split 3-2 when it came to whether or not to immediately hire a permanent city manager. Velazquez and Councilmember Rolan Resendiz previously had said they wanted an interim city manager who would come into the role and evaluate the Hollister government, making recommendations. The council majority, led by Richman, disagreed.

according to police.
One trial, two suspects
The husband of Hollister murder victim Yoon Ji and the woman accused of aiding him in the crime will be tried together, according to San Benito County Superior Court records. Judge Steven Sanders last month set a pretrial conference date of June 28 for murder suspects Sang Ji, 49, and Jung Choi, 45. The judge also determined that a mental health evaluation found that Sang Ji is competent to stand trial on the charge of murdering his wife in December 2017. At a previous hearing, his attorney suggested he may not be competent, and the judge ordered an evaluation at that time. The two suspects remain in custody at San Benito County Jail on suspicion of murdering Yoon Ji. Both suspects have pleaded not guilty. Sang Ji and Yoon Ji owned Hollister Laundromat before Yoon Ji’s death. Sheriff ’s deputies found Yoon Ji’s remains off Salinas Grade Road between San Benito and Monterey counties, according to authorities. The two suspects were arrested immediately after the remains were found. Yoon Ji’s daughter and sister, who live in Los Angeles, reported the woman missing on Dec. 2, 2017. The daughter told sheriff ’s authorities that she had not heard from her mother for about two weeks,
Larios trial date
Christopher Larios, who is accused of killing Raul De La Rosa in 2014, is scheduled to get a trial date at a June 20 hearing at San Benito County Courthouse. Larios, 32, of Hollister, is charged with a felony count of murder, in addition to an enhancement for the use of a firearm. The charges relate to the Dec. 23, 2014 death of De La Rosa at a residence on the 2000 block of Scenic Circle in southeast Hollister. Police arrested Larios when he entered the Hollister police station April 21, 2019, and told officers he wanted to make a statement about the 2014 murder. Based on that interview, officers arrested Larios on suspicion of killing De La Rosa. He remains in the county jail in lieu of $1.05 million bail, according to authorities. Police had previously ruled De La Rosa's death a homicide, but had not arrested or identified a suspect or suspects until Larios made his statement. Officers have not released any details about Larios’ motive or events leading up to the 2014 murder. On Dec. 23, 2014, Hollister police and fire personnel had responded to a medical aid call for a non-responsive man in the 2000 block of Scenic Circle. Officers found the man, later identified as De La Rosa, outside a residence in the area. Paramedics administered medical aid, but De La Rosa was declared deceased after all lifesaving efforts were exhausted, police said.

Jose Antonio Barajas is charged with murder and other felonies in relation to the shooting death of Zendejas on Aug. 1, 2014. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in that crime in July 2018, and has remained in custody at the local jail since then. He appeared briefly June 13 so the court could schedule the upcoming pretrial conference. Barajas was a passenger in a vehicle chasing another car that had four occupants, including the male driver with whom Barajas had previously been feuding. Zendejas was a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle that Barajas was chasing. Barajas opened fire with a handgun on the victims’ vehicle near B and West streets, hitting Zendejas with at least one of the bullets, according to police. The driver of the victims’ vehicle drove Zendejas to Hazel Hawkins Hospital, where police responded shortly after the shooting. Zendejas was pronounced dead later that evening. Barajas fled the area with the two occupants of the vehicle he was traveling in, and later left the country, according to police. He was arrested July 12, 2018, in Guadalajara, Mexico in relation to the Hollister shooting. He was extradited from Mexico and flown to San Jose, where he was transferred to the San Benito County Jail. Barajas is also charged with three counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and shooting at an occupied motor vehicle. The charges against Barajas also include “special allegations” for

The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced grants for Oya Organics and Loyalty Organic Farms, from among $15 million in grants announced statewide. Oya Organics will receive $53,767 and Loyalty Organic Farms, owned by Linda Chu, will receive a grant of $75,000. The grants were announced by 30th District Assemblymember
Robert Rivas of Hollister, who said grants totalling $422,720 went to 12 projects in his district. The funding comes after the CDFA received $10 million from the California Drought, Water, Parks, Climate, Coastal Protection and Outdoor Access for All Act of 2018 and $5 million from the California Climate Investments by the Budget Act of 2018. “The Healthy Soils Program does tremendous work to support farmers and ranchers in developing environmentally friendly farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the health of our soil,” said Rivas. “These grants will provide an opportunity
for our region to be an example of how we can adapt in the face of global warming and preserve our strong agricultural economy.” The Healthy Soils Program (HSP) is comprised of two components: the HSP Incentives Program and the HSP Demonstration Projects. The incentives program provides funding that allows for the implementation of conservation management that improves soil health, sequesters carbon and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The demonstration projects highlight how California farmers and ranchers put the practices from the Healthy Soils Program into action.

CA budget: a closer look
C
alifornia’s political leaders, Democrats all, are touting a new state budget that expands spending on services for the state’s poor while building reserves. That’s true, as far as it goes. However, there are some very big caveats in the $213 billion 201920 budget, the first by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The first caveat is that while expanding health insurance coverage (even to some undocumented adults), early childhood education, an expanded earned income tax credit and other services may alleviate symptoms, they ignore root causes of California’s highest-in-the-nation poverty. The most important factor in having 20 percent of Californians living in poverty, according to the Census Bureau, and another 20 percent in near poverty, according to the Public Policy Institute of California, is the state’s ridiculously high cost of living, especially for housing. How high? Recent calculations by the Council for Community and Economic Research reveal that four of the 10 U.S. metropolitan areas with the highest costs of living are in California, topped by San Francisco, 91.4 percent above the national average. Looking at the situation from a different standpoint, California’s high cost of living depresses real personal income growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). While the state’s economy was booming in 2017, and generating record amounts of taxable income for the state treasury, the BEA says in a new report, its “real personal income” growth, adjusted for cost of living, was just 2.6 percent, lower than all of its neighboring states. Los Angeles-Long Beach had the slowest real income growth of any large metropolitan area at just 1.6 percent. While nearly all California living costs tend to be high, housing is particularly so, thanks to our chronic inability to keep up with demand and the Capitol’s chronic inability to reduce barriers to construction. That brings us to the next caveat about

the new budget—the increasingly precarious state of California’s economy. “The California economy is slowing down,” Jerry Nickelsburg, director of the UCLA Anderson Forecast, wrote in a report this month. “The state is, quite simply, running out of people to be employed.” In decades past, when California’s economy was booming and needed new workers, we would see an influx from elsewhere. But immigration has slowed to a trickle, and we actually have a net loss in state-to-state movements, thanks again to our high living costs. Late last year, economists at Cal Lutheran University issued a report on Ventura County, saying its economy is stagnant because of a lack of workers and blaming housing availability and costs for the situation. What’s true in Ventura is increasingly true of the entire state, recent data indicate. The new budget plants the seeds of potentially massive entitlements that could backfire if recession hits. Although Newsom has characterized much of the budget’s new spending as one-time, he is raising expectations that would be politically difficult to ignore in a crunch. Reserves are being built to cushion an economic downturn, but they fall way short of fully closing the gaps that even a moderate recession would create, which explains why the Legislature’s budget analyst recommended diverting more of current operating surpluses into reserves. The Public Policy Institute of California, in its own look into long-term economic and fiscal trends, reminds us that “California’s current mix of revenue streams creates considerable volatility,” particularly since the budget is inordinately dependent on taxing high-income Californians whose personal incomes are extremely variable. Newsom’s predecessor, Jerry Brown, started building reserves and warned in his final budget, “What’s out there is darkness, uncertainty, decline and recession, so good luck, baby.” Dan Walters writes for CalMatters, a non-profit journalism project in Sacramento.

With homelessness worsening, Californians are rightly frustrated that our state, with its abundance of wealth and resources, has not made better progress in helping people get off the streets and into housing. There is plenty of blame to go around. Major contributing factors include the challenges lowerand middle-income families face finding a place they can afford. Los Angeles helped more than 21,000 homeless into permanent housing last year, but the homeless population increased because even more residents lost housing. These challenges exist statewide. More than 2.2 million extremely low-income and very low-income renter households are competing for only 664,000 affordable rental homes. • That leaves more than 1.5 million of California’s lowest-income families without access to housing. Many of these families end up homeless. • Housing affordability and homelessness are critical issues for my organization, the League of California Cities, and the cities we represent. We see firsthand in our cities the struggle of families that cannot afford housing, or homeless ones who need our support. That’s why the League supports a comprehensive package of proposals to fund homeless services and to increase housing production, particularly for low- and very lowincome families. The league supported the passage of Proposition 1 in 2018, the $4 billion affordable housing bond, and Proposition 2, a $2 billion bond for supportive housing for homeless individuals. The League of California Cities also supports Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposals to expedite the allocation of the housing bond funds, provide $650 million to address homelessness and dedicate another $1 billion to increasing the availability of affordable housing tax credits and fund infill infrastructure. The league appreciates efforts of legislative leaders to restore more robust tax increment financing mechanisms in Senate Bill 5. This measure would create the Affordable Housing and Community Development Program and provide cities and counties the resources we need to support affordable housing. When the state abolished redevelopment in 2011, it wiped out the only source of ongoing funding available to local governments to build affordable housing. SB 5 would help fill this gap by establishing a strong partnership between the state and local governments. Specifically, SB 5 would allow cities and counties to maintain property tax increment in dedicated zones where they’ve developed a state-approved plan. SB 5 also would commit $200 million in tax increment funding annually beginning in 2020. Unlike former redevelopment, state approval is required for any investment, ensuring these investments are maximized. SB 5 would create up to 86,000 new and rehabilitated housing units over the next 10 years, targeting extremely low-income families particularly vulnerable to homelessness. The bill also contains strong accountability provisions and state oversight. Because our homeless problem is so closely linked to housing affordability, the league is working with the Legislature and Newsom administration on proposals that would provide incentives to cities to plan, zone and approve more housing. Cities are entrusted with local land use authority. We recognize we have an obligation to do more to plan for and incentivize housing construction. There is no single or easy solution to address homelessness, but building more affordable housing is a major part of the answer. That is why the league strongly supports Newsom’s budget proposals, which provide more resources, and SB 5 to help support the construction of more housing for low- and very lowincome Californians. Carolyn Coleman is executive director of the League of California Cities.

After learning how a friend in Gilroy started a Guide Dogs for the Blind project, 16-year-old Alexandria Ramirez wanted to do the same thing in Hollister for her supervised agricultural experience. She first needed to get clearance from San Benito High School, because the service animal in training would accompany Ramirez to her classes throughout the day. “FIrst, I presented the idea to the three ag advisers, and they were all on board for it,” said Ramirez, who then introduced her plan to San Benito principal Adrian Ramirez and district Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum. “They were all supportive of what I wanted to do, and they want to see if this program has the potential to grow as well.” So Ramirez began to bring Michelin, her yellow lab-retriever “Guide Dog mix in training,” onto the SBHS campus to continue training. Michelin’s attended school with Ramirez from May 20 through the end of the year. “It did take a little while for them to get used to me bringing a dog to school so often. All my teachers were on board with it,” Ramirez said. “Some of the students weren’t as informed about service dogs, so it was challenging at times. I had to explain to them that he’s not a pet and don’t call him over to you, and little things like that.” Assistant principal Claire Grissom sent a letter home to high school families notifying them of Ramirez’s project for Guide Dogs for the Blind. “We ask that you embrace our student’s efforts in raising a puppy owned by Guide Dogs for the Blind and who will be trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities,” Grissom wrote. “This dog will be attending school with the student as part of a volunteer project involved in socializing and training a dog who will go on to perform tasks for people with disabilities.” Service dogs like Michelin begin training at birth and continue for the

On June 11, Hollister police animal control officers responded to a call reporting two large dogs had been left unattended inside a vehicle in San Juan Bautista. When the officers arrived, they saw two large “pit bull-type dogs” inside the vehicle with an empty water bowl, according to a press release from Hollister police. The dogs did not have any food, and the vehicle was in direct sunlight with the windows cracked. Officers noted the temperature outside the car was 101 degrees. Animal control officers were unable to contact the vehicle’s owner, according to the press release. The dogs displayed signs of being in distress, so officers forced entry into the vehicle to rescue them, according to police. With assistance from the San Benito County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol, both dogs were safely removed from the vehicle. The animals were transported to the Hollister Animal Shelter, where they were treated for symptoms of heat stroke. They are “recovering well,” the press release said. The dogs’ owner was cited for leaving pets unattended in a motor vehicle, according to police.

first 15 months of their lives before they are matched with a person in need of their support. The main training facility is in San Rafael, where Michelin returned after school ended to complete his training. For Ramirez’s part, she brought Michelin with her not only to school but wherever she went around town. She taught him “not to get distracted” and “stay focused” while out in the community. Additionally, Ramirez taught the service dog “how to greet people properly, not jump up on people and remain calm.” “Home life is especially key to their training. They have to be potty-trained, behave well in a crate and not chew on anything,” Ramirez said. “It’s definitely going to be tough [when Michelin goes to San Rafael]. Even though I only had him for a little bit, he’s with me literally every second of every day. I’m going to be sad.” As a member of the local Future Farmers of America (FFA), Ramirez has raised
pigs and lambs to show them at the San Benito County and Monterey County fairs, with some livestock going to market. So, knowing that Michelin is going to a home makes it easier to say goodbye, she said. “I’m so excited because a lot of kids are asking me how they can do it and how they can get involved,” Ramirez said. “That’s what I want to see: other kids get involved for next year.” Ramirez, who just completed her junior year at SBHS, is staying involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind as well. She has her next service animal in training already. “We really want to thank her ag teachers and the school administration for being so supportive and so open to the idea of having these service dogs in training on campus,” said Alexandria’s mother, Michelle Ramirez. “They made the experience very easy. ...We are so very grateful everyone was so open and made this happen so quickly.”

POLICE ARREST TWO ADULTS, ONE JUVENILE FOR GRAFFITI PAINTING
MAN ACCUSED OF STEALING SEVERAL ITEMS TWICE ON JUNE 8
Staff Report
Staff report
Two adults and a juvenile were arrested last week for spray-painting gang-related graffiti on the walls of a local elementary school, according to Hollister police.
Romeo Beltran
Julio Grivalba
Police are looking for a man who stole more than $950 worth of merchandise twice in one day from the Hollister Target store, according to authorities.
About 11:51pm June 10, Hollister officers responded to Sunnyslope Elementary School, 1475 Memorial Drive, after someone called to report a crime in progress, reads a press release. The witness who called police said three people were spray-painting the walls of the school. The responding officers saw three male suspects at the school matching the descriptions given by the caller, according to authorities. The suspects
were detained as they were leaving the property. Officers continued to investigate and found fresh gang graffiti at the school and a nearby address, police said. The suspects' hands were covered in paint that matched the color of the graffiti. The two adult suspects were identified as Julio Grivalba and Romeo Beltran, both of Hollister, police said. They were arrested and booked on suspicion of
vandalism. Beltran had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The male juvenile suspect was issued a citation for vandalism and released to his parents, police said. Anyone with information about this case can contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call WeTip at (800) 78-CRIME. Information provided to WeTip may qualify for a reward.
The grand theft occurred June 8 at the store located at 1790 Airline Highway, according to a press release from the Hollister Police Department. Officers responded to the store after the security staff called to report that someone had entered the store and stolen “several expensive items.” The suspect had in fact entered the store twice in the same day, and stole merchandise each time, according to the press
release. Store security told police that the suspect did not make an attempt to pay for the items. The responding officer obtained store video footage of the alleged thief and extracted still images, which the police department is sharing with the public. Police did not reveal what the suspect stole or a dollar value of the stolen merchandise. According to the state penal code, grand theft is defined in most cases as the theft of personal property exceeding $950 in value. The suspect is identified as Hispanic male adult with short black hair, in his 20s, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds, police said. Anyone with information about this case can call the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330.

DELIVERING Hollister native Austin Wahl realized a dream when the Oakland A’s selected him in the 23rd round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft last month. Wahl, a 2013 Palma graduate who earned a degree at Cornell University, played this past season for Cal State Monterey Bay.

Inspiring journey AUSTIN WAHL REALIZES A DREAM AS MLB DRAFT PICK emanuel lee Sports Editor
Five months ago, Austin Wahl felt like he was clinging onto something he should probably let go—his goal of getting drafted and playing professional baseball. At the time, Wahl was enrolled at Cal State University Monterey Bay, contemplating whether to use up his final year of athletic eligibility after graduating from Cornell the previous year. “I was on vacation with my family and felt like I was holding on too much to the dream and that I should let it go,” he said. “I told (CSUMB) coach (Walt) White and coach (Robert) Fabing (Wahl’s former Little League coach) that, ‘Hey, I’m sorry, but I’ve decided not to play this year. I don’t feel right about it and I don’t want to be a cancer on the team.’ They respected my decision.” With a caveat. The 24-yearold Wahl relayed the conversation he had with coach White afterward. “He told me, ‘Hey look, you don’t have to make a decision until Jan. 22. How about you come out for a few practices, see how you like the team and make a decision after that,’” said Wahl,
who was raised in Hollister and graduated from Palma in 2013. Wahl agreed to do just that, and it was the best decision he’s ever made. Wahl didn’t just have a solid season at CSUMB; rather, by simply showing up and working hard, he put himself out there to get noticed by Major League Baseball scouts. That led to the Oakland A’s selecting Wahl in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft in early June. Wahl signed with the A’s within a couple of days, and is currently in Arizona for mini camp with all of the other team’s draftees. It’s a weeklong process where the A’s evaluate all of the players— through physicals, bloodwork and a few batting practices and bullpens—before the players get placed within the organization. “Most likely I’ll be playing rookie ball in Arizona, but there’s a slight chance I’ll be in Vermont or one of their other affiliates,” he said. For a variety of reasons, one could describe Wahl’s odyssey to pro baseball as unexpected. For one, Wahl only played two years of high school baseball at Palma before being recruited to play football at Cornell. After serving on the scout team in 2013, Wahl didn’t suit up in pads again. He switched to baseball for the 2016 and 2018 seasons and graduated in May 2018 before Fabing told him he still had athletic eligibility remaining. Physically, the 6-foot-4, 197pound Wahl certainly looks the part. But teams don’t draft on looks alone, and Wahl showed
enough stuff—he has a low 90 mph fastball and sharp slider— to become the highest draft choice in CSUMB history (at pick No. 704). “I’m still considered a baseball lifer with substantial chunks throughout (my life in) which I didn’t play, and I think that helped my draft stock because my arm is so well preserved,” he said. “My velocity surely helped, and I’m really skinny with a lot of room of muscle to put on (my frame). It also helped that in the later half of my final seasons at Cornell and CSUMB, I started finding myself and getting dialed in.”
Finishing strong
Even though he was just 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA at CSUMB, Wahl saved his best for last. In his final six outings, Wahl allowed just one run over 12 innings with 11 strikeouts. He obviously showed something where the A’s would select him in the 23rd round. On the day Wahl got selected, he was in a tizzy and essentially had no idea where he stood. All Wahl knew was even if he didn’t get drafted, he was confident he could sign a free agent offer with a team. Wahl had contact with A’s scout Kevin Mello along with several other scouts midway through the season, but he didn’t really know what to make of those encounters. “Once the scouts contact you, they run evaluations and they kind of shelf you and you don’t hear from them for a while,” he said. “I was hopeful to get
drafted but not entirely sure I would. I was pleasantly surprised where I went. If anything, I was thinking if I got drafted, it would be maybe in the 30s rounds.” About 30 to 45 minutes before Wahl got selected, Mello told Wahl it was likely the A’s would take him. But Wahl simply couldn’t watch the draft tracker. “It was too agonizing,” he said. “So I set the phone down and was madly pacing around the house before I took my dogs for a walk to try to keep my mind off it.” It was only when former Balers standout and CSUMB teammate Connor Fabing’s name appeared on his phone when Wahl had a suspicion he had just been drafted. “Connor calling me, I knew it was impending,” he said. “I was freaking out when he told me. I don’t even remember the conversation—it was probably a mixture of histrionics and excitement. You’re almost delusional because this is something I had strived for my entire life and to have it actually happen was very zany… My phone was blowing up. It was definitely north of 50 (text messages). A lot of those numbers I didn’t even have on my phone. It was pretty incredible and exhausting, and definitely the best day of my life—bar none.” Wahl’s mom, Christine, is a teacher at San Benito High. Wahl was a substitute teacher at the school during the 2018 fall semester, as he contemplated whether to use up his final year of college athletic eligibility. Wahl found out he still had one
season of play remaining courtesy of Fabing, and for that, Wahl is eternally grateful. “If not for Robert having noticed that (my athletic eligibility) and still looking out for his Little League boys, I wouldn’t be here today,” Wahl said. “I played with him for three years on the Yankees, and he’s so passionate and came to every one of our games this year at CSUMB. To have guys like him and coach White, who are good people, you say thank you and appreciate everything they’ve done.” Going forward, Wahl has tunnel vision, knowing what needs to be done to one day make a MLB roster. “The high (of getting drafted) hasn’t necessarily dissipated; it’s just been replaced with a different aim,” he said. “Now I’m here with a different goal, like I almost have to be drafted again to get to the show. If anything, I’m more elated now because the shock of it all has worn off.”

Visitation: Thurs. June 20, 2019 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Services at 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Full obit and condolences: sanderfhcares.com
rank J. Cerrato Jr., aged 91, a life-long resident of Hollister, CA passed away on May 21, 2019 in San Jose, CA following a catastrophic stroke. Never one to believe in postponing the inevitable, Mr. Cerrato eschewed life sustaining treatment in favor of a brief stay at Good Samaritan Hospital before hurrying home to Heaven to be reunited with his eternal family, especially his son, Frankie.
F
MELODY “GRAMS” YOUNG
Frank was born in Hollister on Grass Valley Road, just up the road where he lived all of his life. The proud son of Italian immigrants, Frank moved to the “Home Place Ranch” on Cienega Road at the tender age of 3. He and his identical twin brother, Harold, along with older sisters Janet and Terry, attended local grammar schools and graduated from San Benito High School. Frank worked with his father and brother planting trees and tending the ever-expanding orchards. Growing apricots, walnuts and French and Imperial plums, (later dried into prunes), kept everyone busy throughout the year. Frank and Harold were both veterans of the Korean War. They both served in the U.S. Army. Harold was stationed in Alaska and Frank served as a combat heavy equipment repairman with the Armored Calvary in Korea. Some years later, Frank married Dorotha Hager Castro and moved “a couple of doors down” Cienega Road to the new

away surrounded by family and friends May 20, 2019. Melody was born in DC on
March 3, 1954. She is survived by: her husband of 46 years Gary, her daughter Stacey, son Dwayne and grandchildren, Haley, Mackenzie, Madison, Jordan, Jaxson, Megan and sisters Jackie and Linda. She was also very loved by those who knew her from The
family’s house on the ranch. A daughter, Lisa Ann Cerrato and later a son, Frank J. Cerrato Jr., completed Dorotha and Frank’s world. Frank was a dedicated orchardist who never took time away from work for himself. He labored to give his family, particularly his children, all of the benefits that the American Dream could provide. Never wanting to take a vacation himself, he did enjoy memberships in the Hollister Dance Club, the local Elks Lodge and the Farm Bureau. The highlight of the year for Frank came every June. He looked forward to attending the San Benito Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo. He only missed the war years. Frank enjoyed watching “the locals”, and especially his children, compete in the various classes. Frank always admired the skill and agility needed by both horse and rider in the stock horse classes. Gregarious by nature, Frank enjoyed “shooting the breeze” with everyone, old timers and new friends alike! Frank is survived by his sister Terry Cerrato of San Francisco, (now a resident of Whispering Pines); his daughter Lisa Ann Cerrato, also a life-long resident of Hollister and a local elementary school teacher; a niece Heather Keating of Chandler, AZ, and his wife Dorotha’s son from her previous marriage, Don Castro. Frank enjoyed the outdoors and all of God\’s creatures, especially dogs. Donations in Frank’s memory should be directed to Pet Friends for their spay and neuter program and can be left at the mortuary for your convenience. Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 29th along with the recitation of the Holy Rosary. A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Thursday, May 30th at Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos. Entombment followed at Calvary Cemetery.
