Anna Eshoo: Joe Biden always put country first
Drew Penner, Editor
In an April 11 interview, Los Gatos Town Councilmember Rob Moore—who was seeking a delegate spot on the guest list at the Democratic National Convention—said unless something “drastic” shifted, he expected President Joe Biden to continue seeking reelection.
Since then, there were several key developments: Moore secured his place at the Chicago event; Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt; and, on Sunday—after a dismal debate performance and a series of gaffes—Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race.
“A lot has changed over the past few months,” Moore said in a telephone interview. “I think that Joe Biden has made a very courageous decision today.”
Just a couple hours earlier, Biden had posted his decision on Twitter—with a photo of a letter in which he talked up accomplishments like passing climate change legalization and reducing drug costs of seniors, while expressing his “heartfelt appreciation” to the American people for trusting him with

LG GUITARIST TO ROCK SJ AS BEACH BOY
His approach? Stay true to their early sonic landscape
Bill Kopp, Contributor
The Beach Boys came on the scene in 1961, straight outta Hawthorne, California. The group’s songs embodied the
myth of a youthful and carefree Southern California existence, one filled with surfboards, cars and pretty girls.
The core group—bassist and primary songwriter Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl (guitar) and Dennis (drums), cousin Mike Love (vocals) and guitarist Al Jardine—built the music
around sublime, Four Freshmen–inspired vocal harmonies. As time went on, Brian Wilson retired from touring, instead concentrating his efforts in the recording studio.

WEST VALLEY YOUTH THEATER HAS PREPARED A GHOULISH MUSICAL COMEDY
The Addams Family runs Thursday through Sunday
Ainsley Northrop, Contributor
After a summer-long rehearsal process, West Valley Youth Theater’s production of The Addams Family takes to the Leigh High School stage this week.
Featuring high school and returning college students, The Addams Family is one of the organization’s four summer shows.
Rehearsals took place at night, in contrast to the other WVYT productions, which took the form of summer camps.
Many cast members acted as directors, choreographers, and counselors for the smaller production camps, sharing their knowledge of and love for the arts while simultaneously preparing to perform in their show.
The Addams Family is a musical comedy based on Charles Addams’ ghoulish 1960s comic strips. Through deadly humor, thrilling songs and endearing (yet slightly chilling) characters, it champions the importance of love and friendship through adversity.
This family-friendly musical has a bit of everything: show-stopping dance numbers, heart-wrenching ballads and hilarious plot twists.

BIDEN BOWS OUT

America’s top job.
This followed reports that Biden was still trying to hang on—such as a front page story in the New York Times which said an “ill” president was “stewing” over calls for him to step aside, and hurt by former president Barack Obama not speaking up for him.
But the overall thrust of the campaign has not changed, added Moore.
“I think that this election will be the most consequential election of my lifetime, without a doubt,” he said back in April, criticizing Trump. “I think he does not have respect for the rule of law.”
On Sunday, Moore returned to this refrain.
“What I care most about is defeating the existential threat that Donald Trump
Broadway veteran, particularly likes this production. “I grew up on the black and white TV version of Addams Family,” she said. “I love that now grandparents and parents know the TV show and movies, and the younger kids know the Netflix version of Wednesday. Everybody knows the Addams Family, and now we get to put it all together.”
Since May, student performers have rehearsed for about four hours, five times a week, dedicating seemingly boundless energy to bettering the show. Aiden Curtis, a rising junior at Leigh High School who plays Fester in the Central Park cast, explained his dedication. “I went through every line and thought about what my character wants, and how that line reflects what he is going to do.” he said. “Both the ensemble and the leads need to have 100% commitment to their characters, to the choreography, to the vocals, and to their overall performance. I feel like we (can) accomplish that.”
Putting on such a large-scale production also requires an army of people behind the scenes. Besides the talented artistic staff of Heather Stokes, Pauline Locsin-Kanter, Truesten Tautolo and Patrick Gammon, several college students help keep the show humming—from running sound
to operating the lighting board. Additionally, parents of the performers donated their time to managing props, hair, makeup, costumes and more.

show runs from July 25-28 with six performances.

poses to our country,” he said, noting he believes running Vice President Kamala Harris will be the Democratic Party’s best shot at retaining the White House.
However, he said he didn’t think she should be a shoo-in.
“I don’t think it should just be a coronation,” he said, explaining he’d like to see a process play out that allows people to make their case for who the new leader should be. “I haven’t endorsed anyone, but I believe that the nominee will be Kamala Harris.”
In his view, this will inject some positive energy into the race.
“It is going to be fascinating,” he said.
Joe Biden, Jill Biden and Kamala Harris all made separate fundraising stops at the home of a Microsoft executive in Los Gatos over the past few years. Moore says Silicon Valley big wigs had been threatening to withhold future donations if Biden stayed in the race.
Former Saratoga councilmember Rishi Kumar, another DNC delegate, had been publicly calling for Biden to step down for months—including on CNN.
Writing on Twitter Sunday, Kumar saluted Biden’s determination and commended him for “prioritizing the country and the party” over his own ambition.
“The Democratic Party now needs to do damage control,” said Kumar, who previously endorsed Gavin Newsom. “Let the best candidate emerge!”
On Monday, he criticized the Democratic Party for what he described as a pressure campaign to convince delegates to “conform and support” Harris.
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo said she learned Biden was giving up his campaign the same way everyone else did.
“I had just left mass and turned my phone on, and there was the announcement,” she said in an interview Monday. “It was a great act of patriotism.”
Eshoo described Biden as “a man that has always put his country first, with over half a century of public service,” praising his efforts to prevent climate change and wipe out student debt for borrowers.
“I’ve known Joe Biden for about 40 years,” she said. “I believe that historians will treat his presidency as one of the most consequential presidencies in the history of our country.”
Eshoo recalled meeting with Biden in the Oval Office in March 2021, when he urged lawmakers to launch an effort to get yet untamed diseases under control.
“I went right back up to the Hill and began working on it,” she said. “He signed my legislation into law in the last Congress, establishing a new advanced research agency called ARPA-H.”
On Monday night, in a virtual meeting with party leaders, Moore committed to voting for Harris at the convention.

A COFFEE HOUSE DREAM REIMAGINED
As they prepare to officially open their doors, Gardenia Los Gatos CEO takes us behind the scenes
Laura Ness, Contributor
Carol Wang, the CEO and face of the entrepreneurial team behind Gardenia Los Gatos—a new café, bar and restaurant that will soon debut at the site that most recently was the Palms—long dreamed of having her own coffee house.
“I love coffee house culture and the sense of community that coffee houses create,” she says.
Coming up with a name proved more difficult than anticipated, and after much disappointment, she finally asked herself what she really loved.
“I have wanted a garden since I was a little girl,” she says. “My mother loved flowers, and her favorites were gardenias. I love their color and their fragrance. To me, they represent elegance and purity.”
You will see gardenias prominently employed as part of the interior décor of the restaurant, which has been so very many things in its past life. But never a coffee house—never a place that welcomed gathering over beverages brewed from some of the finest single origin beans on the planet, served by award-winning baristas.
We sit at a handsome live-edge wooden table upstairs in the repainted second story of the old Victorian on Santa Cruz Ave. Natural light streams in, illuminating the organic-feeling of the wall décor. A series of sleek shelves display some of Wang’s personal coffee cup collection, alongside custom-crafted ones and mugs from a porcelain factory in China that’s been in business for centuries. Each is a work of art.
For someone who didn’t start drinking coffee until five years ago, she’s developed a remarkable grasp of gourmet coffee and the culture that thrives around it. One of the house specialties will be Panama Gesha beans from a family plantation in Panama, called Lamastus Estates. Wang treasured meeting the owners in person. “They had a beautiful garden,” she says. “And I realized that the tiny white coffee
flower is very similar to the gardenia. It even has a similar aroma.” At that moment, she couldn’t help but think, “Wow, I got it right!”
Wang grew up in China, attending Xi'an Jiaotong University’s medical school, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in clinical medicine, graduating in 1993. She began her career in internal medicine, but decided to put it on hold to raise her two children, now grown and pursuing their own life missions. “It was a hard decision,” she admits. “But it is one I don’t regret.” Her son works for a venture capital firm and her daughter, who loves the outdoors and pursues an active lifestyle, is helping her mom with social media for the new venture.
When Wang came to California, she lived in Danville, where she started a Chinese school. She taught students Mandarin and Chinese philosophy. She also began working in real estate, for California Pacific Brokers. She attributes her introduction to coffee to Nespresso and says that Peet’s Coffee in Danville was one of her first coffee experiences. “At first, it was an espres-
so every once in a while. And then, it became once a week—and eventually, every day.” she says. Wang currently lives in Mountain View.
Los Gatos has always been on her radar, as it’s a town she loves for its beauty and charm. She’d frequently stop in on her way to Carmel and Monterey. Thinking it might be a good location for her dream business, she started looking for a space. And suddenly, there it was. The Palms, a place she’d much enjoyed in the past, admiring it for its Victorian architecture, had been sitting vacant. It had plenty of outdoor space, which she felt was critical for a coffee house. “I really am so lucky,” she says, with a warm, appreciative smile. “Working with the landlord was so great. And everything went smoothly, like it was meant to be.”
Wang worked to preserve the character of the building, seeking only to make minor adjustments, like brightening it up a bit. The furnishings, decor and lighting are exquisite, befitting the ambiance of a fine dining restaurant, far beyond what you’d see in a typical café. But, make no mistake, this is
Third Wave Coffee personified—from the baristas she’s hired, to the coffee beans they are using. And then, there’s the brunch menu that Executive Chef David Intonato, formerly of Pine Creek Cookhouse in Aspen, has developed and will begin serving this weekend during the soft opening. Wang describes the cuisine as FrenchAsian fusion.
While she may not have intended to branch into fine dining, this place is absolutely meant for it. Wang and her business partners have taken their time to ensure every detail is in place before the doors open. “It’s been a big learning curve,” she admits. But she’s clearly thrilled to be sharing her dream with the community.
Gardenia Los Gatos will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 2. Coffee will be served Monday-Sunday, 7:30am-3:30pm. Brunch will be served Tuesday-Sunday, 10:30am2:30pm. Happy hour begins August 6, and will run Tuesday-Sunday, 3:30pm-7pm. Dinner service is scheduled to start this fall.
RENOVATED The former Palms building has been updated with new decor. Gardenia’s sleek shelves display coffee cups from Wang’s personal collection.

THE LG BEACH BOY: ‘IT’S ABOUT THE SONGS’
Beach Boys, from page 1
he melted down on a flight to Houston at the end of 1964, but he rejoined them two months later at the February 26, 1965 San Jose Civic show, where the mayor showed up and presented a box of dried prunes to the band.)
Inspired by Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” production techniques, Wilson became an innovator in the studio-as-instrument aesthetic. Deaf in one ear, he nonetheless could conceive in his head exactly what he wanted. And with the deep talent of LA-based session players—drummer Hal Blaine and bassist/guitarist Carole Kaye among them—he would run the studio musicians through countless takes to realize the “teenage symphonies to God” he heard in his head.
PSYCHEDELIC WAVE
Busy on the road, his fellow Beach Boys came in toward the end of sessions for “Good Vibrations” to layer their breathtaking vocal harmonies atop the instrumental beds. And in the end, Wilson got the recording he wanted. For his trouble, Wilson earned a #1 single; that success encouraged him to dive into an even more ambitious project, “Pet Sounds.” Often cited as one of the 1960s’ greatest works, that album employed a similar set of working methods, and the result set a new standard in sonic excellence: timeless songs, top-notch arrangements and a sound that held up to repeated, intense listens.
The Beatles were among those who listened. Paul McCartney would go on record naming “God Only Knows” as his favorite song. When the Beatles’ bid to better Wilson’s work yielded “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Wilson struck back with an even more ambitious project: “SMiLE.” Working with impressionistic lyricist Van Dyke Parks, he began to craft an abstractly conceptual work of genius. But Wilson’s bouts with psychedelic drugs and incipient mental illness meant that “SMiLE” would be abandoned.
To varying degrees, the rest of the Beach Boys had their reservations about Wilson’s studio adventures. Though the tale may be apocryphal, Mike Love allegedly warned Wilson not to “f*** with the formula.” In any event, once the “SMiLE” project was scuttled, the Beach Boys effectively retreated from psychedelia, and their era of experimentation ended. Brian Wilson’s participation with-
in the group would become ever more sporadic; the other members took up the slack, continuing to craft new music that balanced their pop inclinations with more serious musical pursuits.
BACK TO THE BEACH
By the 1970s, though, popular tastes had changed, and the Beach Boys had largely fallen out of favor in the music marketplace. Albums like 1973’s “Holland” would be well-received in critical quarters, but sales figures were less impressive. But in 1974, Capitol Records compiled a 2LP set, “Endless Summer;” that 20-song collection focused squarely on the group’s early, pre-“Pet Sounds” material.
“Endless Summer” was a runaway commercial success, albeit a two-edged sword: the album revived the Beach Boys’ fortunes, but preserved them forever in their comparatively innocent, striped-shirt guise. Though new releases would continue, from that point onward, the Beach Boys would effectively operate as a nostalgia outfit, emphasizing the sun-and-fun character of those early tunes.
Created with a briefly returning Brian Wilson, the group’s last new studio album of all-original music, “That’s Why God Made the Radio", was released in 2012.
Fast forward a half century to 2024. Long estranged from the group, Brian Wilson suffers from dementia and is in the care of a conservatorship. Brothers Carl and Dennis Wilson have long since passed away. Jardine—who had toured with Wilson’s superb solo group—is on his own. Sole remaining founding member Love helms an official configuration of the Beach Boys, including longtime member Bruce Johnston (he joined in 1965). Love is 83; Johnston is a year younger.
THEY GET AROUND
These days, the Beach Boys are primarily a performing unit; the group— Love and Johnston plus a top-flight array of younger musicians, including lead guitarist John Wedemeyer—continues to tour, bringing the sentimental sounds of surf, sun and sand to modern-day audiences. And in tacit acknowledgment of the compilation that revived the band’s career, the current Beach Boys tour is branded as “Endless Summer Gold.”
Mike Love says that concerts on this tour feature 18 of the album’s 20 songs. “And we’re still getting amazing audience response,” he says. “All kinds of demographics, all age groups come out and have a great time, and I think that’s a wonderful thing.” He readily concedes that the release of “Endless Summer” 50 years ago last month gave the Beach Boys a shot in the arm that continues to pay dividends today. “As time goes on,” he observes, “you have a resurgence, then your career subsides a bit, and then you have another resurgence.”
Love cites attendance figures from some of the band’s most historically notable shows—an estimated 900,000 in Philadelphia in 1985, half a million at the Washington Monument later that same day—and makes the point that his group’s appeal endures. “We’ve had our highs even in the midst of our lower-selling albums,” he says. “And we’re doing fantastic right now; we have thousands of people singing along to our songs.”
A longtime friend of the band, television actor and sometime musician
John Stamos is a featured performer with the Beach Boys on this tour. He plays drums alongside main drummer Jon Bolton. And like every member of the touring unit, he sings.
Love is enthusiastic about the tour, and about the new Disney+ documentary, “the Beach Boys.” Like “Endless Summer,” this officially sanctioned chronicle of the group’s history focuses on the sun and fun more than the dense, ambitious studio works of the mid ’60s. Love makes the point that since late 1964, there have effectively been two parallel versions of the group. “One is the recording group, of which Brian was absolutely in charge,” he says. “And then there’s the touring group. My cousin Carl was in charge of that musically, but I was in charge of agency and management. I’ve always preferred the live music part of it.”
KEEPING IT CLASSIC
Carl Wilson passed away in 1998; these days his place in the touring group is filled by Wedemeyer, who joined in May 2023. Though he lives in Las Vegas, Wedemayer is a Los Gatos native with a

long South Bay history; for years he led adventurous trio group WHaT. Though his formative musical years were immersed in the blues, he says that when he belatedly discovered “Pet Sounds,” everything changed for him. It struck a chord with the musician, who describes himself as “in love with pop music and great songs.” Between covers of Frank Zappa and Howlin’ Wolf, WHaT could launch into a note-perfect reading of the Beach Boys’ 1973 classic “Sail On Sailor.” Wedemeyer came to the attention of Mike Love during his time playing with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers. With that group, he had shared an occasional bill with the Beach Boys. “I was happy to be on the periphery of the Beach Boys,” he admits. “I never dreamed that (an offer to join) would come up.”
But it did, and Wedemeyer has since played hundreds of dates with the band. And the versatile guitarist says that when he joined, he had a clear goal. “I decided that my mission would be to play the parts as close to the original recordings as I could,” he says. “My

ear just wants to hear those classic Carl Wilson, Tommy Tedesco, Barney Kes sel and Glen Campbell guitar licks.”
Along with singing harmony in the band, Wedemeyer works hard to get just the right guitar tone and effects to match the vibe of each classic Beach Boys tune. “It’s not a guitar gig,” he emphasizes. “It’s about the songs.” And while he’s a generation younger than the group’s leaders, he remains in awe of their stamina and work ethic. “The PR on Mike Love is that he’s one of the biggest a******* in rock and roll,” he concedes. “He gets a bad rap. In fact, he’s the nicest, most accommodating guy. And trying to keep up with a couple of 80-plus-year-old guys is fascinating,” Wedemeyer enthuses. “The minute you start to complain, you look at Mike all raring to go, and you think, ‘Okay, I’m gonna shut up now!”

JEN BEATTIE: A CHAMPION ON AND OFF THE PITCH
The Bay FC defender, a Stage 1 breast cancer survivor, visits Los Gatos to raise awareness
Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor
Over the course of her 17-year professional soccer playing career, Jen Beattie has been on her fair share of championship-winning teams.
While the 33-year-old Bay FC defender is still going strong on the pitch, she’s championing another cause: breast cancer awareness.
Beattie, who was 29 when she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer, shared her story with cancer patients and survivors—in partnership with nonprofit Pink Ribbon Good (PRG)—
on July 16 at Vasona Lake County Park. Beattie answered questions for 20 minutes before walking a mile with members from PRG’s Bay Area chapter, which offers services to those battling breast and gynecological cancers.
Beattie’s experience with the disease–which she successfully overcame in December 2020–has ignited a passion to discuss the importance of early detection.
“I knew absolutely nothing of what I was getting into,” she said. “And that’s what makes events like this more important for me, because I think there are so many people in my shoes that were in the exact same experience and knew nothing. It’s beyond scary.”
Beattie said “normalizing” the conversation empowers those living with cancer to persevere.
“No one is really talking about the difficult stuff, and that's what made me find the importance of getting out and talking to people,” said Beattie, who is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at PRG’s Aug. 17 fundraising gala.
Beattie’s cancer diagnosis in October 2020 was made all the more difficult as it came during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I didn’t have my family, I didn’t have my (friends),” she said. “My football community kind of became everything. Going to work, being able to be around people for that amount of time, helped a lot. I can’t emphasize enough that being a part of a community was super huge for me—especially in the middle of Covid, when I couldn’t meet friends regularly or I couldn't go out.”
After her diagnosis, Beattie under-
went two straight weeks of radiation therapy. In December, she was declared in remission. For the most part, Beattie was still able to train and play during her treatment and recovery process, which proved key in maintaining a positive mindset.
“When I was playing or exercising, I wasn’t thinking about cancer, I wasn't thinking about treatment,” she said. “It was my one minute where my mental health was the most important thing in how to keep my mind straight.”
Beattie’s most difficult times were on the days when that wasn’t possible. Thankfully, her teammates, friends and family were there for her—without fail—with emotional pick-me-ups, just when she needed it most.
“The hardest part I ever felt was when I couldn't play soccer,” she said. “What

got me through it was being around people. My family, they were soldiers. They were my support network, they were amazing. I could talk to them at any point. I’m beyond grateful for them.”
In 2021, Beattie was honored with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award, for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. Beattie’s decorated playing career has included two separate stints at renowned club Arsenal.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Beattie amassed 142 caps for Scotland before retiring from international competition in January 2022. She left Arsenal and joined Bay FC in February. Although it was tough for her to go across the pond, Beattie relished the opportunity to be a part of something historic.
Bay FC, which plays its home games at PayPal Park, is an expansion club in the National Women’s Soccer League. The club was co-founded by four U.S. women’s soccer legends–Brandi Chastain, Aly Wagner, Danielle Slaton and Leslie Osbourne–and received financial backing from global investment firm Sixth Street.
Bay FC is currently 6-10-0 and in eighth place in the 14-team NWSL standings. Beattie has had an almost seamless transition from the UK to the Bay Area.
“I’m loving it,” she said. “I think it was a huge culture change, huge life change, going from the big city in London to California.
It’s a totally different, much “slower,” lifestyle, she says.
“It’s awesome,” Beattie said. “I played in England and Europe for the majority of my career, and to be offered a move out here–I’m 33 years old–it just felt like the right time and an unbelievable experience I really couldn’t say no to.”
Already known for her physical play, skillful headers and rock-solid defense, Beattie has now become quite an advocate for early detection of breast cancer. Cheerful, well-spoken and engaging, Beattie blended right in with the cancer patients and survivors during the Los Gatos walk.
Beattie encouraged everyone to exercise, embrace each day, hold tight to personal relationships and take time to work on their mental health. Beattie’s mindset in dealing with cancer was summed up in a Players’ Tribune article.
“This is really about how you deal with setbacks and the tougher moments,” she said. “I have learned a lot about that over my career – and I’m pretty sure that if I hadn’t, well, then I wouldn’t have had a career at all.”

ART BRINGS ISSUES INTO FOCUS AT EXHIBIT LAUNCH
NUMU and genArts team up for ‘Boundaries,’ in partnership with SVCreates
Dinah Cotton, Contributor
If you haven't been to a contemporary gallery opening lately, you just might be surprised at what today's visual artists have to say.
And the big opening for the latest exhibit at New Museum Los Gatos, Saturday, showed that creative voices are keeping the faith when it comes to exposing lies and standing behind their beliefs.
“Boundaries,” a program of SVCreates, is the fourth annual experimental exhibition of genARTS—and the first to be installed at NUMU.
GenARTS has been canvassing for innovative, thought-provoking works across Santa Clara County. The jury based their selections on creativity and originality of concept, connection to theme, and technical proficiency.
Artists were to show off “boundaries”
in their work—of all types. The influence of Silicon Valley on what was turned in was undeniable. Out of more than 180 submissions, 74 were selected for this show. Reservations for the event were requested, as a buffett was planned.
Approaching the courtyard of the Civic Center, I noticed a line to get in had formed. Art lovers, artists and their loved ones were in attendance. The gathering included families with young children and folks with walking canes.
The “XX Madonna Whore Gore” by Gina Bae—oil on canvas—was striking. Bae explains in her placard the piece was created in the midst of Roe v. Wade discourse. “This piece focuses on the politics of the female body with its reclamation of the historically prevalent female nude and depiction of the Madonna-whore dichotomy,” she wrote. “These extremely polarized perceptions of women highlight the double standards of sexual autonomy and the close association of women’s bodies and their ‘worth.’”
It was a meditation on how women are much more than simply vessels
for bearing children. “I want my art to contribute to discussions around the intersections between gender and race, history and modernity,” the artist statement added. This piece certainly moved me into thinking about how women are viewed in the current political climate.
The other moving piece was “We Were Only Kids,” by Badri Valian. The combination painting-sculpture draws upon the artist’s childhood in Iran during the tumultuous years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The pink color honors hues banned for girls by the Islamist government.
This was a unique and wonderful show with so much to offer.
Boundaries: the 4th Annual Experimental Exhibition is at NUMU from July 19-Oct. 6. Admission’s free the first Sunday of the month (Los Gatos residents and children under 18 can always enter for free). The museum’s open Thursday-Sundays 10am-4pm.
RECEPTION The opening of the exhibit was quite well attended.
OPENING (L-R) Margaret Luo, genARTS leadership team vice chair, Allison Railo, NUMU curator, Kimberley Snyder, executive director of NUMU, and Stephanie Barajas, chair of genARTS.
