Heckling Is No Joke
comments@metronews.com
There are certain people who think that stand-up comedy is a town hall or an open invitation for discussion; you’re one of those people. I saw you interrupt the show (at a particular avianthemed comedy club) because you felt that the joke the comedian was making was an inaccurate depiction of reality. That’s what a joke is, you dummy! That silver spoon you were fed from must have obscured all lessons in decency and decorum that most people go through, because you clearly had none. You spent the next few minutes arguing politics with the comedian, who compared two presidential candidates to fast food restaurants. In the end the comic was able to win the crowd to his side and shut you down properly. I truly hope one day you can find a horse high enough for you to climb on so that when you fall, it’ll hurt enough to change your ways.

The Legal Aid Society of Santa Clara County—a 58-year-old public interest law firm that offers pro bono help to lowincome clients—is apparently verging on collapse, although there is an effort underway to save it. The nonprofit’s office on North Market Street in San Jose sits empty and its calls go straight to voicemail. “The Legal Aid Society of Santa Clara County is currently closed and unable to assist you with any legal issues at this time,” states a woman in a recording callers hear upon dialing the agency’s main phone line. Though several local lawyers expressed surprise at the sudden closure, it was no secret that the nonprofit focused on family, fair housing and immigration law was struggling.

ACT TWO Stanford professor Michele Dauber has carried the momentum from a high-profile judicial recall campaign into ongoing activism throughout the U.S.
An email former Legal Aid trustee JESUS OROSCO sent to board member RUSTY RINEHART describes an effort to salvage the nonprofit, which, according to IRS records, subsisted on upward of $3 million a year in government grants. Orosco said a group of concerned citizens agreed not to file complaints or request audits of the nonprofit until first offering to “a smooth transition” to new management.
Total Recall
“If an agreement is not reached to keep the agency open and allow a new generation to continue the legacy, I fear that there will be a community backlash with filed complaints, political involvement and negative press,” Orosco warned.
W
If the firm simply closed, it would legally have to return or donate all its assets— computers, office equipment, records—to another IRS-approved nonprofit. But if it allows a new group of people to assume control, Orosco said, the Legal Aid Society could potentially survive. “Let’s work together to set Legal Aid on a path to continue to provide services for decades to come,” Orosco implored Rinehart, who didn’t return Fly’s call for comment. “The loss would be devastating for our community.”
Campaign to recall Aaron Persky shifts its focus to political activism BY AVI SALEM HEN MORE THAN 60 percent of the local electorate voted to recall Judge Aaron Persky in the June 5 primaries, they sent a clear message to Silicon Valley and the nation at large: that sexual assault, and in this case one who ruled leniently when it came up in a court of law, would no longer go unnoticed. The Recall Persky movement—a multi-million dollar campaign which gained global press coverage, celebrity endorsements and support from dozens of elected officials—owed much of its success to the efforts of campaign chair Michele Dauber, a Stanford Law professor, Palo Alto resident and mother
of five. Dauber is a fast-talking tour de force. She speaks her mind with a political activist’s fervor but articulates her thoughts with a tactful grace that comes from her years as an educator. Outraged by the outcome of the 2016 Brock Turner case, she spent the last two years dedicating her life’s work to telling the story of Emily Doe, the unnamed but outspoken sexual assault survivor in one of the county’s most publicized and contentious court cases. And she did so amidst death and rape threats, stalkers and an ever-increasing onslaught of internet trolls. Yet just two months after the landslide win, Dauber is back in action, working to promote her latest venture to raise awareness about sexual assault: an ongoing series of community events including panel discussions, town hall meetings and film screenings that she
hopes will continue to move voters into political action around these issues. “Women are 51 percent of the registered voters in this country, meaning we do not have to accept a state of affairs in which the crimes and offenses that we experience and which interfere with our ability to achieve equality in society are not treated seriously,” Dauber says. “Our goal in the Recall Persky campaign, and as we move forward through these new organizational forms, is to make sure that these issues are addressed at the ballot box.” LaDoris Cordell, a retired Santa Clara County judge, was one of the more outspoken critics of Dauber and her campaign. Cordell says she believes the recall could still jeopardize judicial independence and that the campaign should have focused more of its efforts on local, actionable change. “[They] could and should have used the millionplus dollars they raised to assist victims of sexual abuse by funding the testing the backlog of rape kits or by funding more shelters for abused women or by funding more anti-sexual abuse training for school counselors,” she says. Interestingly, Dauber’s new venture directly addresses one of Cordell’s concerns, the first of which is a screening of the HBO documentary I Am Evidence
(D-Palo Alto), who will explain the efforts that are underway at the federal level to address sexual harassment and intimate partner violence. Taking place at 3pm on Sept. 29 at the Campbell United Church of Christ, the town hall, co-hosted alongside the Women’s Caucus and Orchard City Indivisible, resonates with Dauber on a personal level. Eshoo, just weeks before the June primary, condemned the recall of Persky in a joint statement with Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose). At the time, it came as a big blow to Dauber’s recall effort, but she now looks forward to the prospect of building bridges between her campaign and Eshoo’s and opening a dialogue about sexual harassment. “We won 55 percent of the vote in Anna’s district, so we thought it was important to talk to her to see where we could work together, and we’re very excited that she accepted our invitation,” Dauber explains. “I’m pleased she wants to join with us and have our support to work on the issues we all care about.” Another of Dauber personal achievements with the Women’s Caucus, one that she feels “very proud of,” involved rewriting this year’s candidate endorsement questionnaires to include two new questions that address violence against women—a topic never directly asked of candidates in years past. Small but intentional changes in the electoral process like this, she hopes, will reframe the conversation to include survivors of sexual assault from the very start. And to Dauber, that’s significant progress. “I was sort of laughed at when I suggested this idea, but after it was done everyone agreed that it was really important and a good innovation—one that candidates responded well to,” she explains. Dauber intends to plan an event every month leading up to the November midterms, but she explains that her ultimate goal is to extend these community forums far beyond election day. Ultimately, Dauber feels she will have done her job when candidates incorporate issues of sexual harassment on their platforms and turn them into real legislative action once elected. “I want to be totally clear: the goal of the recall campaign was to take the legitimate anger of women over the failures of our legal system to efficiently address violence against women and transform that anger into electoral action,” Dauber says. “We need to get women, survivors and other advocates out there, pushing forward this agenda through the vote.”

at 6:30pm on Aug. 16 at the Campbell United Church of Christ. The 2017 film exposes the nationwide epidemic of untested rape kits, shedding new light on the damaging effects that this shortcoming of the criminal justice system has had on victims of rape. The screening—which is cosponsored by the Women’s Caucus of the Santa Clara County Democratic Club, Orchard City Indivisible, Action Together Bay Area, Women's March Bay Area and the Democratic Activists for Women Now— includes a panel discussion between Dauber, county Supervisor Cindy Chavez and YWCA Silicon Valley CEO Tanis Crosby and a tabling area where community members can get involved with a number of local organizations on the spot. “With this event, we thought it would be important to work with other activists and feminists in the community,” Dauber says. “We’re pushing forward on women’s rights generally, but we are also specifically working to raise the political salience of violence against women issues.” By involving nonprofits, elected officials, and advocacy organizations across the South Bay, Dauber hopes to form a strong enough coalition to shift the conversation into real political action. First on her agenda is urging legislators to expand the number locations where sexual assault survivors can obtain a rape kit. Currently, South Bay residents can only obtain exams in one location at Valley Medical Center in San Jose, a startling reality that Dauber described as “completely and totally unacceptable.” Coupled with the fact that survivors often have to wait an average of seven to nine hours in the clothes they were assaulted in to have their exams, many forgo the process entirely. “No one who experiences this sort of offense should be subject to this kind of treatment in one of the richest counties in America,” Dauber says. “It’s outrageous that in Santa Clara County you cannot get this exam done closer to where you’re located, and we’re trying to change that.” She mentions that the lack of rape crisis centers in the South Bay is already a key platform issue for some elected officials including San Jose City Councilman Don Rocha, who is running for supervisor this fall. The second event Dauber will host is a town hall forum with Rep. Anna Eshoo

HERE WE GO AGAIN State Sen. Jim Beall (left) and Assemblyman Ash Kalra put the state Department of Education on blast for failing to hold 4Cs accountable for repeatedly misusing taxpayer money.
Child Care Nonprofit 4Cs Breaks Rules Yet Again BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH After a damning audit released in April identified misspending and fraud at the Community Child Care Council of Santa Clara County (4Cs), the nonprofit came close to losing the vast majority of its $43 million a year in government funding. But state regulators threw the struggling agency a lifeline by extending its contract for another year under conditional status. All 4Cs had to do was follow the rules set by the California Department of Education (CDE). But that was apparently too much to ask from the troubled 45-year-old nonprofit, which offers subsidized day care to roughly 6,000 children so their parents can lift themselves out of poverty. Last month, 4Cs failed to pay its child care providers on time and didn’t even send out a notice to expect a delay, leaving them scrambling to pay their personal bills. It was hardly the first time the nonprofit lapsed on its reimbursements, which day care operators like Christina Johnson depend on for their livelihood.
“I had to pay late fees on my other bills because I didn’t get my check on time,” she said in a phone call Thursday. “That means I also had to take time to call around to all these [bill collectors] to explain why I didn’t have money to meet those obligations. It’s very embarrassing and also irresponsible, and I’m not either of those things.” The latest misstep by 4Cs caused financial hardship for an untold number of families and showed that legislators who placed the agency under audit were right to be concerned by the CDE’s decision to renew funding for another year. At a June 27 Joint Legislative Audit Committee hearing to discuss the April report’s findings, Assemblyman Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and state Sen. Jim Beall (D-San Jose) expressed dismay about 4Cs persuading the state to give it another chance despite its longstanding inability to comply with the terms of government contracts. Auditors found that 4Cs fraudulently
backdated child care renewal forms, which gave parents little to no time to respond and resulted in hundreds of impoverished kids losing day care. They found that 4Cs used CDE grants to pay for unauthorized expenses, including an executive pension that stood to benefit the nonprofit’s former executive director, Alfredo Villaseñor, who resigned a year ago once regulators started taking a closer look at his decades-old organization. When 4Cs appealed the CDE’s imminent defunding this past spring, an independent review board decided to renew its contracts. At the June 27 legislative hearing, Beall called the appeals process unfairly one-sided because the people affected by the dysfunction at 4Cs—employees, parents, children and day care providers—had no chance to make their case. “It’s unfortunate that the Legislature was not involved, and it’s unfortunate that the public was not involved,” Beall lamented. “It shows a culture that I do not appreciate.”
County Shines Light on Modern Slavery Santa Clara County will host a series of educational activities, including art exhibits and performances, through the rest of the month to raise awareness about human trafficking. The campaign kicked off last week with an art exhibit called “Before Our Very Eyes,” which featured sketches, photography and multimedia art depicting what modern-day slavery looks like in the Bay Area and around the world. “We want to help people realize that injustice is here in the Bay Area,” said Brian Wo, co-founder of the Bay Area Anti-Trafficking Coalition. The next event, a screening of the documentary, I Am Jane Doe, takes takes place at 6pm Thursday at the County Government Center, 70 W. Hedding St., in San Jose. Typically, the county organizes its Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January, but decided to bring it back now because of a significant drop in the number of trafficking survivors seeking help. Officials say the drop-off is primarily due to the resurgence of anti-immigrant sentiment in federal policy—from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns to the legal attacks on sanctuary jurisdictions. County service providers say they have seen the decline in non-citizen survivors turning to them for help in the past 18 months, with a more dramatic nosedive this year. But undocumented victims can rest assured that they will be protected if they want help, according to public defender Paola Estanislao. “We’re not going to ask for an immigration status,” he said.“That’s not part of what our mission is.” —Winona Rajamohan

HOMETOWN HOMESICKNESS Jackie Gage wrote a song about San Jose from her current digs in New York City.
Another Way Singer Jackie Gage debuts her song about San Jose at Jazz Summer Fest BY GARY SINGH
S
AN JOSE NATIVE Jackie Gage is flying back from the Big Apple this weekend, just to film a music video for a song she wrote about her hometown. Gage will debut her new tune, “A Secret Place,” Saturday night at Cafe Stritch during the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, followed by an exclusive VIP after-party at a separate location. If the performance sells out, as
Gage’s gigs often do, tickets for the after-party will still be available. To raise money for the video shoot, friends, family and distant admirers all contributed to an Indiegogo campaign, 80 percent of which was raised in 24 hours. As of last Sunday, the goal was officially shattered, but anyone can still donate. Speaking over the phone from New York, Gage said that “A Secret Place” taps into the universal muse of homesickness. She wrote the music and lyrics all by herself. “So much is different over here
than being at home,” she said of New York. “The people, the food, the sights, familiar faces, things like that. I find a lot of solace in writing music, so I would find multiple ways to write about being home in San Jose and being in California. And thankfully, a song came to fruition. It just seemed like the most beautiful time to capture the awesomeness and the beauty of San Jose while we have the festival taking place.” By now, Gage should be considered one of San Jose’s favorite musical daughters. She started playing piano, singing and writing music around age 11. Mitty High School was where she first witnessed a jazz choir singing Dionne Warwick, Sade and Natalie Cole tunes—music she grew up with. “I had no idea that people my age sang that music,” she recalled. “So that’s when I started thinking, ‘Oh. Maybe I could do this, too.’” While chasing a marketing degree at Santa Clara University,
she attended her first jazz jam at Art Boutiki when it was located in downtown San Jose. Her first paying gig was at Morocco’s Restaurant for $30. After gaining a serious local following over a few years, she then decided to make a go of it in New York City. Currently, Gage appears every Wednesday throughout the summer at George's in Kaufman’s Studios, in Astoria. Nevertheless, Gage still found the time and inspiration to write a serious song about San Jose, a tune capturing the valley’s off-the-radar predicament, it’s “secret” appeal. Besides, the entire human race is absolutely sick of that other tune about San Jose. “Growing up, I loved, and still love, Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach; that was one of my first forays into singing,” Gage said, confessing she still has Dionne’s greatest hits album in her car. But Gage would like to see other ways to represent the city in song. “I hear all these songs about LA and San Francisco and New York and all these different places—Tokyo, London, you know? If San Jose’s calling card is Dionne Warwick’s tune, that’s beautiful, but I wanted to also share how I felt about San Jose being my home.” Continuing, Gage used the word “homesick” several times. When writing the song, she said she focused more on the feelings she had back home, the nature of California, missing friends, visiting the San Lorenzo River Valley, Santa Cruz, seeing people in downtown San Jose at Caffe Frascati, or hanging out in Cesar Chavez Plaza. These experiences, as a whole, inspired her to write the tune. “I feel like people don’t necessarily know how gorgeous San Jose is,” Gage said. “They always talk about going to LA or going to San Francisco when they’re in California, but in my mind I was reflecting on how the sky looks when I’m home, or looking at the flowers that are planted nearby, and the smell of certain redwood trees. That nostalgia was what guided me in making the song possible.” At presstime, people were still donating to the Indiegogo campaign, the video shoot at Cafe Stritch was approaching sellout status, and people were still buying tickets to the after-party. “It just proves that people do care,” Gage said. “And I can’t wait to share this music with them.”

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND
I
T’S AUGUST IN San Jose—and that means the city will soon be overrun by devotees to America’s art form. The 29th annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest returns with a heavy helping of everything from big band to bop, and from salsa to swing. For three sonorous days, downtown will be filled with some of the world’s most accomplished musicians. In the spirit of jazz, some will uphold tradition by sticking to the classics, while others will actively work to break away from the status quo—as headliners like Herb Alpert and Kool & The Gang mix with boundary-pushing younger artists, such as Aaron Abernathy and Bobbito García. It’s a wonderful time to be a jazz fan in the South Bay. Read on for highlights from this year’s Summer Fest.
Easy Does It I T’S ONLY A slight overstatement to call trumpeter Herb Alpert the king of 1960s easy listening music. Alpert, of course, led the staggeringly successful Tijuana Brass; if you’ve ever been in a thrift shop, you’ve seen Whipped Cream and Other Delights, the record with that famously racy cover photo. Alpert is the rare artist who topped the charts as both an instrumentalist and a singer (the latter was a rare vocal turn for 1968’s “This Guy’s in Love With You”). And as the “A” in A&M Records, Alpert co-founded the world’s
Herb Alpert, an International Man of Music plays San Jose Jazz BY BILL KOPP
largest independent record company, releasing music by artists as diverse as Paul Williams, Joe Jackson, the Carpenters, Peter Frampton, Cheech & Chong, the Tubes, Supertramp, Janet Jackson, Gin Blossoms, Soundgarden and Robyn Hitchcock. Alpert is best known, however, as the man who brought a kind of pop-jazz into the homes of millions. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass—actually Alpert backed by the ubiquitous LA session aggregation known as the Wrecking Crew— released 11 albums between 1962 and 1968; six of those LPs went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. At one point, records by the TJB even outsold the Beatles. Alpert’s chirpy, uptempo style was effectively the soundtrack for a certain segment of the ’60s lifestyle. (And speaking
of soundtracks, he recorded the memorable theme song for the original Casino Royale James Bond film in 1967.) After the Tijuana Brass years, Alpert largely left the south-of-theborder style behind, moving toward a smoother mainstream jazz sound. His 1979 single “Rise” hit the No. 1 spot on both the pop and adult contemporary charts. To date Alpert has released nearly 50 albums, 29 of which went gold or platinum. Way back in 1973 Alpert married singer Lani Hall, who had been the vocalist in one of A&M’s popular acts, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66; their “Mas Que Nada” was a hit in 1966 and earned renewed popularity when it was featured on the soundtrack of Mike Myers’ 1997 Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Hall has
yet another spy movie connection: as a solo artist, she sang the theme song to 1983’s non-canonical 007 film Never Say Never Again. Today at age 83, Alpert is active as an abstract expressionist painter and philanthropist. And he remains a vital onstage presence. Appearing in concert together since 2006 and backed by an instrumental trio, Alpert and Hall perform a set of songs that draws upon both of their celebrated musical careers.

GALE FORCE A local, living legend, Eddie Gale will be playing his hometown at this year’s Summer Fest.
Sound Man H
Trumpeter Eddie Gale is San Jose’s jazz ambassador BY GARY SINGH ANGING WITH TRUMPETER Eddie Gale tends to unearth a different version of San Jose history than what you’ll hear from anyone else bouncing around the periphery of the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. First of all, he is the only person alive in San Jose to have recorded with John Coltrane. He also jammed with Cecil Taylor and Byron Allen. At times, he ran with Louie Bellson and Dizzy Gillespie. He even toured with Sun Ra. For a spell of a few years, his drummer was Sammy Cohen, who later spent years writing music stories for Metro.
At the Summer Fest, when employees are driving golf carts back and forth between the stages, when the equivalent of a border fence encircles Plaza de Cesar Chavez, when R&B stars from 40 years ago are getting tens of thousands, and where hat vendors are more plentiful than free improv gigs, one immediately wonders why Eddie Gale has not been part of the whole shootin’ match since day one. He was living in San Jose before the San Jose
Jazz Society even existed, but he hasn’t performed at the festival in many, many years. In any event, Gale is sort of like quantum physics. You don’t have to sort it all out. But a few things rise to the surface in terms of history. After playing spiritual jazz as a Stanford artist in residence, Gale came to San Jose in 1972 and never left. “I didn’t know San Jose except for the song,” he tells me, as we slug
coffee in his front yard. He’s got decaf, me regular. Soon enough, as he spins a matrix of rocking stories, Gale, 76, reminds me that in 1974, San Jose mayor Norman Mineta issued him the official title of San Jose’s Ambassador of Jazz. This may sound superfluous, but it’s not. To wit, the hallway leading from his front door back toward the rear of his house is a veritable museum. I see dozens of photos, awards and certificates, plus magazine stories, posters, ads and other accolades going back to the ’60s. I see shots of Gale with Bud Powell, Byron Allen, Sun Ra and Dizzy. There’s also a poster from the 50th anniversary of the UN, an event at which Gale’s band played. Speaking of the United Nations, Gale’s music has always been infused with peace and spirituality, especially when it comes to experimentalism.
At the Summer Fest this year, his nine-piece ensemble will bring at least 40 different percussion instruments and hand them out to the audience for specific numbers. Everyone will be invited to participate, inner peace being the theme. To Gale, even though jazz is an American art form, his music connects to everyone’s inner peace, no matter your country of origin. There’s no reason to put a border around the US and block out the rest of the planet’s music. This will be the theme of the night. “Inner peace, in America and the world,” he tells me.

All That Jazz T BY WALLACE BAINE
HERE’S A LITTLE bit of something for everyone at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Here are some of the highlights—from hot Latin rhythms to laid back licks, genre-defying new artists old standard bearers.
Aaron Abernathy Aug 10, 11pm, Cafe Stritch
If that surname sounds familiar,
it’s because Ohio-born pianist Aaron Abernathy is a grandnephew of MLK’s right-hand man, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy. The younger Abernathy has wrestled with the plight of being black in America is his own way. That includes his vivid and moving 2017 album Dialogue, in which he seeks to reinvigorate the classic soul sound borrowed from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye with a thoroughly contemporary take on institutional racism and the economics of inequality.

Aug 10, 9pm, GlassHouse
Aug 10, 10pm, El Taurino Stage
San Jose jazz audiences need no introduction to this popular 10-piece local dance band that has been perfecting a beguiling blend of merengue, salsa, cumbia and other Latin rhythms for the past six years. Latin Heat—which brings in musicians from Venezuela, Puerto Rico and many parts of the US—takes the headlining slot at Friday’s Jazz Fest Afterparty at the GlassHouse on South Market Street.
Japanese-born jazz guitarist Yoshiaki Miyanoue first picked up a guitar at the age of 10 and has been recording for close to 40 years. He was so deeply inspired by legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery that his second album was titled Song For Wes (which featured guest sideman Philly Joe Jones). Also, just like his idol Montgomery, Miyanoue never uses a guitar pick, preferring to play with the thumb. That style and a great love for American jazz has brought him

Sylvia Cuenca Aug 11, Noon, Cafe Stritch
Celebrated New York-based percussionist Sylvia Cuenca has deep rhythmic roots in San Jose. It was in the South Bay where Cuenca grew up, inspired by jazz drum legend Max Roach. She later went on to perform and record with the San Jose City College Big Band before embarking on a three-decade career as a prominent drummer and recording artist behind many of the jazz world’s biggest names.
She returns to her hometown at the head of a quartet with pianist Peter Zak, bassist Essiet Okon Essiet and bassoonist Paul Hanson.

Yissy García grew up steeped in the sound of her father’s band, the great Cuban supergroup Irakere. Yissy is now an internationally celebrated percussionist and bandleader in her own right, bringing to the world a bold mix of styles powered by Cuban rumba, but mixed thoroughly with flavors of hip-hop, jazz and funk. YASSOU Aug 11, 4:45pm, Boom Box Stage
Despite the shouting that their allcaps band name implies, the Marin County-based group YASSOU is much more likely to murmur than scream. Fronted by ghostly vocalist Lilie Hoy, YASSOU jumps off into a deep dive beyond pop predictability to something haunting and dreamlike, which has drawn comps to artists such as St. Vincent and the XX. They come to the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest just before launching an ambitious collaboration with the San Francisco Ballet.
Kishi Bashi Aug 11, 7pm, Hammer Theatre
Musical adventurer Kishi Bashi continues to bank major street cred from his association with the art rock band Of Montreal. But his signature sound has been forged both as a solo artist and as the frontman for the electronica outfit Jupiter One. On the heels of his much buzzed-about 2016 release Sonderlust—a set of shiny-pop dance tunes in which he showcases an impressive falsetto—Kishi Bashi is now embarking on a new form of expression altogether, something he calls a “songfilm,” in which he delves into the history of JapaneseAmerican incarceration during World War II.

Lovers of the unique sound of the Hammond B-3 have the Delvon Lamar Trio circled on their Jazz Fest calendars. The Seattle-based group is powered by the intuitive interplay between their namesake leader on the organ and guitarist Jimmy James, reflecting the soul jazz legacy of the 1960s and ’70s. RETURN OF THE DUNK Dunkin’ Donuts is back in the 408.
Five To Watch
S
IX MONTHS IS usually considered the earliest a new restaurant, bar or coffeeshop can receive a fair review. Each month, Metro spotlights five of the newest places we think are worth a look-see.
Dunkin Donuts 5519 Snell Ave, San Jose. 408.440.2143
Naka is Back and Better Than Ever!
This location marks DD’s return to the South Bay after a nearly 20-year absence. East Coast ex-pats wax poetic about DD’s crullers, Munchkins (donut holes) and hot coffee. Personally, I’ve found their cold brew to be quite good, and who can complain about donuts and java from a drive-thru?
Naglee Park Garage 505 E San Carlos St, San Jose. 408.564.4111 This neighborhood gem has recently been reopened by Farmers Union owner—and Naglee Park resident—Mark Ostrowski. They now have table service, as opposed to the counter service of the past, and a fresh, seasonal menu featuring seafood options, like their mango shrimp ceviche ($12) and spicy skillet prawns ($14). And they still serve their acclaimed burger ($14).
Mingle’s Mango 5278 Monterey Hwy, San Jose. 408.368.0680 South San Jose may not be front-of-mind for local diners looking for authentic Asian eats, but that’s about to change. Mingle’s Mango features an amazing array of handmade Chinese steamed dumplings—xiaolongbao (a.k.a. the XLB). They include the ubiquitous pork ($7.95 for seven), lamb and fish ($13.95 for seven), and a dessert XLB ($4.25 for two) with chocolate and hazelnuts.
Sushi, Sake & Sumo!
Out of the Barrel 1875 S Bascom Ave, Campbell. 408.672.8332 The Pruneyard continues to up its game with this new taproom. Out of the Barrel plans to showcase two or three craft breweries a month by featuring up to six of each of their beers. They’ll also have some other rotating suds on tap to help them decide which breweries to feature next. They don’t serve food, but they encourage patrons to bring in their own to enjoy while sipping.
Neptune 2650 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose. 669.238.8499 Dinner 5:30-9:30 Closed Monday 1200 41st Ave, Capitola
831.479.9620 | nakasushi.org
Yet another entrant in the South Bay’s burgeoning Louisiana crawfish scene, Neptune also serves lobster and two types of crab: Dungeness and king crab legs. Their four sauces—garlic butter, lemon pepper, Cajun and sweet-and-spicy—are each available in four levels of heat. Time your visit to enjoy their happy hour (Tue-Sun, 2pm-7pm), and chow down on $2 beer and $2 oysters. —John Dyke
Art Cervantes

Karina Cervantes is stepping out on her own.
Just Dance Newly formed Cypher Dance Company expresses emotions with movement BY WINONA RAJAMOHAN
I
T CAN BE a challenge to express difficult emotions with words. Whether it’s a perpetually messy roommate or the exhausting, cumulative frustration of systemic racism, sometimes it seems easier to just endure in silence. Karina Cervantes knows the feeling well. She has been asked multiple times if she’s hopped the fence of her own apartment complex in order to swim in the pool. As a Chicana, she is convinced the question—“Do you even live here?”—wouldn’t be asked of a young white woman.
Fortunately for Cervantes, she has another method of communication to turn to, even when she doesn’t speak up. As dancer and choreographer, she uses her body to tell the world how she feels. That’s exactly what Cervantes aims to do with “Things I Can’t Say Out Loud,” the first original showcase by her fledgling Cypher Dance Company. The production aims to call out social inequities through movement. Cervantes says the show will be an immersive experience, featuring a series of dances along with pre-recorded narration, which will help the audience follow along with the emotions the dancers are working to express.
Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their own experience and actions while taking in the performance. “I have a lot of anger and frustration, maybe because of how I’ve been treated in society,” Cervantes says. “I created different dances that kind of all relate to each other in that way.” It took some convincing to get Cervantes to strike out on her own. Before she formed Cypher, she had tried more traditional routes into the world of dance, but she consistently encountered economic, cultural and racial barriers. Auditioning at contemporary dance companies, she felt unwelcome as she was greeted by cold stares. Sometimes while working with instructors, she felt them hesitate to touch her—an important component in many dance classes, where teachers must physically move dancers bodies in order to demonstrate proper form. “I would think, ‘I’m not dirty,’” Cervantes remembers. “I felt that shame.” She also felt that the flamenco style she learned as a child was viewed as

MAKING MOVES After years of feeling she didn’t belong in traditional dance circles,
incompatible with ballet and modern dance. Her movements were often met with disapproval: “No, don’t do this; you can’t do that.” It was around that time that Cervantes’ brother suggested that she stop trying to fit in to a system that didn’t seem to understand or respect her. “I was making dances here and there mainly for myself, and I kept auditioning for all these companies,” Cervantes says. “And my brother was like, ‘Why don’t you do your own thing?’” And so, Cypher was born. Cervantes says the company’s goals are multifaceted. She wants to make dance more accessible for low-income individuals—those who can’t afford $20 for a single class. She also wants to be more accepting of a wider range of dance styles. And, of course, she wants to help those who have felt marginalized to express themselves. “As a culture, we’re very into silencing ourselves,” says Danielle Galvez, a dancer with the company. “We repress our emotions so much that sometimes we can’t even remember them.” After their upcoming showcase, Cervantes intends to expand her company’s reach through classes led by Cypher’s four members. Each have strengths that stretch across multiple genres, from ballet through contemporary and on to hip-hop. The classes will be donation-based and open to all ages. The only thing Cervantes will not tolerate is judgement. “I wanted to keep that purity in dance without thinking that I had to lose weight or that I had to be a certain type,” Cervantes says. “I wanted to create a safe place for people to dance.” At the end of the day, Cypher is ultimately about creating opportunities for those who feel that they’ve been sidelined for being different. “It’s important for young people to add their voice in, to say what we find beautiful and what we find not acceptable in this world,” says Catherine Hsu, another dancer with the company. “To ask how we can combat that in a way that is loving toward everyone.”

Flash fiction is usually defined as a work under 100 words, though San Jose’s Flash Fiction Forum defines it as “no more than two pages double spaced.” The short-short format has been used for decades by writers like Lydia Davis, Langston Hughes and Joyce Carol Oates, and for the last five years, the Forum’s Wednesday readings have been a great resource for writers and fans of (short) fiction. Readings are always free, as is the submission process for interested writers. Come celebrate this half-decade milestone for the local literary community. (MH)
San Jose Youth Shakespeare is celebrating Christmas early with one of Shakespeare’s most gender-bent comedies. Originally performed on the final evening of Christmastide, Twelfth Night features plenty of cross-dressing and a bit of what historians have identified as metatheatre—that is, playing with the concept of acting in a play on stage. This production, staged by a group of young, local and talented actors (age 8-21), will be set in a 1890s California. The journey begins with a pair of twins separated in a shipwreck. Each twin thinks the other is dead and ends with a pair of marriages. (WR)
Forget Jagger. Forget Morrison. Forget Plant. For millions of boomers, the voice of thunderous, pissed-off, rock & roll rage is Roger Daltrey—the blonde-tressed front man of The Who. Daltrey had to be a big voice to compete on stage with Pete “Bleeding Fingers” Townshend and the madman drummer Keith Moon. At 74, a mellower Daltrey comes to Saratoga, performing old Who hits, rarities and new stuff, perhaps now reflecting on just how wrong he was when he sang “We won’t get fooled again.” (WB)
For thousands of years, humans have been watching the Perseids meteor showers. The ancient stellar event happens annually around this time when dust from the Swift-Tuttle Comet lights up the night sky. Montalvo Arts Center is opening up its lawn for a stargazing event to coincide with the peak of year’s shower. Attendees can engage in astronomy lessons from the San Jose Astronomical Association, take part in interstellar dances led by artist Matteo Rubbi and plenty more. The event is sold out, but the shower is free for anyone looking up at the night sky. (MH)

This family-friendly event will feature more than 220 booths with fine art and handmade crafts, tasty food from various food trucks, local wines, refreshing beer and live music from bands like the Cocktail Monkeys and the HouseRockers. This event is free and open to the public and will continue through Sunday. (DI)
Still pounding on the 88 keys at the age of 82, Jerry Lee Lewis has had long and storied career. Known for such hits as “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” Lewis is also rumored to have set his instrument on fire during a Brooklyn performance in 1958— nearly a decade before Jimi Hendrix lit up his Stratocaster at Monterey Pop. One thing is for sure: Lewis was a fiery performer in his prime. Witness one of America’s first rock stars in the flesh at the Mountain Winery this weekend. (NV)

PANIC! AT THE DISCO
Tue, 7pm, $46+ SAP Center, San Jose From the very start, Las Vegas-bred alternative-pop-rock outfit Panic! at the Disco been a theatrical project. They even give their hometown brethren, The Killers, a run for their money—and the latest Panic! record is no exception. Released in June, Pray for the Wicked comes on the heels of frontman Brendon Urie’s debut on Broadway, where he played Charlie Price in the latest production run of Kinky Boots. The music video for the album’s lead single, “Say Amen (Saturday Night),” is completely over the top, featuring a suave Urie nonchalantly dispatching a group of ski-masked burglars in his home. (NV)

REVIEW
ONE LAST RIDE The glory of Peru and the madness of Dennis Hopper are on full display in ‘The Last Movie.’
Cocaine Cowboys THE WHO’S SONG “Behind Blue Eyes” could be addressed to the angst of the Dodge City-born director, actor and artist Dennis Hopper—a man too handsome to play anything but desperados. Hopper’s breakthrough was Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without A Cause, where he played a character called “Goon.” As an actor who recovered from a drug-induced breakdown in the decades that followed, he was unforgettable (as the satanic yet infantile Frank Booth in Blue Velvet), or very good (River’s Edge, based on a crime in Milpitas) or even capable of enduring a very bad movie (Waterworld). Hopper’s directorial debut Easy Rider (1969) was a worldwide hit, and the film and its director were heralded as a voice of a generation. As a result, he was given the opportunity to do anything he wanted. What he wanted was to give a big bite to the Hollywood hand that fed him in a film he called The Last Movie. Along for the Ride (2017) In The Last Movie, Hopper plays a decadent The Last Movie (1971) director on Peruvian location, whoring and drinking, while conversely being a figure of Aug 11, 5pm Christlike self-sacrifice. (The stance works, in the 3Below Theatres same way that Michelangelo’s Goliath-sized statue & Lounge, San Jose. of David doesn’t seem like a mixed metaphor.) It suggests the idea of the arrival of cinema at a rural village at 14,000 feet as something like a massive toxic waste spill. Godardian breaks and deflections are the result of Hopper’s editing down of a four-hour film in a Taos, New Mexico manor, aided with what Ray’s widow recalled as “ounces of cocaine.” Critic Pauline Kael, while not a fan, heralded the film’s “amazing visual style,” and credited both Hopper’s composition as well as László Kovács’ majestic photography. The cerulean blue of the South American skies matches often excellent acting—in particular Shirley Knight, Sam Fuller and Michelle Phillips, Hopper’s wife in a marriage that lasted just eight days. The Last Movie screening, marking the restored film’s Bay Area debut, is hosted by director and cineaste Alejandro Adams. Also included is the documentary on Hopper’s maligned epic, Along for the Ride (director Nick Ebeling will be introducing it himself, and valley-based film critic Fernando Croce will be part of a panel discussion). Whether The Last Movie is a lost masterpiece or just an artifact of its times, a Hopper revival is necessary. Happily, Hopper turns up this fall in Orson Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind (Netflix), another lost film about the angst of the movie business. —Richard von Busack

STAGE
Juanita Harris are hosting the ‘Curvy Cabaret.’
Full Figures WHEN SINGER AND actress Karyn Rondeau planned to audition for Monty Python’s Spamalot, something held her back. “I wasn’t going to audition for Spamalot because I was too fat,” says Rondeau, who occasionally becomes misty eyed during our conversation. However, with the support of friends, she went out for the role and ended up landing the part of the musical’s leading lady. “It was this amazing experience for me, and I got to wear these really awesome sexy costumes,” she says, remembering what a confidence boost she gained from the experience. “I just felt great, and I closed that show just loving myself and loving my body.” It is that feeling that Rondeau aims to coax out of others with her new show, Curvy Cabaret. A talented cast of female performers tell their stories of taking their bodies back, fighting self-doubt and living healthy with their body types. Rondeau and production partner Juanita Harris—who work together as J/K Cabaret—could easily be mistaken for old friends. But in truth, they didn’t connect until December 2017. They met at Crema Coffee Roasting Company on The Alameda in San Jose, where they hit it off while discussing music and the stage. Not long after Rondeau Curvy Cabaret and Harris founded their company, and together they put on shows. Their most recent, Drunks on Parade, Aug 12, 7pm, $22+ brought a collection of drinking songs to Art Boutiki. City Lights Theater When they’re not working together as J/K Cabaret, Company, Harris and Rondeau stay busy with other artistic San Jose endeavors. Rondeau will be in City Lights’ production cltc.org of God of Carnage in September, and Harris sings in the San Jose-based 7th Street Big Band. Rondeau and Harris’ latest show, Curvy Cabaret, aims to celebrate women—especially women whose shapes don’t match those so commonly found on the covers of glossy magazines. “We want to do things that bless people, bring life,” Rondeau says. Five women from all over the Bay Area will be featured in the show, which comes to City Lights Theater next weekend. The women will share personal stories of dealing with or overcoming feelings of inadequacy sing songs and perform other stage acts. Curvy Cabaret is a family-friendly show; Rondeau and Harris hope that both girls and boys attend and find something to take away from the production. “You shouldn’t be limited by how you look,” Harris says. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, and don’t let yourself tell yourself you can’t do something.” —Kaylee Lawler

CROSSFIRE In ‘BlackkKlansman,’ a secular Jew and Colorado Springs’ first black cop team up to battle the KKK.
Minority Report Spike Lee’s latest is a winner about an unlikely undercover mission BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
Y
OU DON’T NEED a white critic to tell you that 2018 has been a phenomenal year for black-themed film. BlackkKlansman, released on the anniversary of the shame of Charlottesville, continues the streak. Spike Lee’s Cannes winner is oddly merry, quite nostalgic, and an ultimately hopeful account of a black police detective’s investigation in Colorado during the late 1970s. Few who saw Lee’s X (1992) would forget the horror of the scene of the
Klan riding out against a billboardbig full moon. His treatment of the KKK here is different: It reminds one of a caption R. Crumb affixed to a cartoon of evil cigar-smoking CEOs— “I just love drawing these guys.” It’s a thrill to have a skulking enemy out in the open. There they are, the real thing, no excuses about mispeaking or misunderstanding. It’s the late 1970s. Rookie cop Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is a laconic but can-do kid who is told he’s going to be the Jackie Robinson of the Colorado Springs police department. After he pushes for more challenging assignments, he’s ordered undercover at the local college’s Black
Student Union. There he meets the student activist Patrice (Laura Harrier of Spider-Man: Homecoming). Noting a classified ad seeking recruits to the KKK, Stallworth makes a spontaneous prank phone call in what Sorry to Bother You describes as “the white voice.” The gang is enthusiastic to meet Ron, but naturally, he can’t actually appear in person. Ron talks his partner Flip (Adam Driver) into impersonating him at audition with the secret organization. Ultimately, the surveillance goes all the way to the top—to the loathsome David Duke (played by Topher Grace). Together, Ron and Flip learn the rites and the secret handshake, and discover you’re not supposed to mention the “K” word around Klansmen eager to mainstream their “organization.” Flip is secular Jewish. “For you, this is a crusade,” he tells Ron. “For me, this is a job.” However, through exposure to the KKK’s Jew-hatred, Flip comes to identify his common cause with Ron. Oddly, in the real-life case this is based on, the KKK plotters were considering
bombing a pair of gay bars; common cause seems to only go so far here. Elements of the fictionalization show, as do the standard moments seen in a police drama and the reveling in blaxplotation films. But it’s easy to get wrapped up in this story, thanks to Lee’s force and thoughtfulness. The KKK members are sometimes formidable, sometimes lonely; the only one-dimensional one is a cracker imbecile played by Paul Walter Hauser, as the kind of dunce who scratches his forehead with the barrel of his pistol. Lee shows a strange bit of sympathy for one couple, Felix (Jasper Pääkkönnen) and his wife Connie (Ashlie Atkinson), who are seen cuddling up in bed. They’re sickening racists and yet the salt of the earth. It’s made with mellow color by Chayse Irvin, with just the right amount of violence and scenes of big ’70s cars swaying on their shock absorbers. Lee maintains a good deal of texture to go with the discursiveness, such as Ron and Patrice’s chat about who’s better, Shaft or Superfly. Over the years, Lee has tended to address his audience as if they were a public meeting. And yet his gambits pay off, as in a lecture by Kwame Ture (born Stokely Carmichael, and played here by Corey Hawkins) on the self-loathing installed in black folk by white society. Even more impressive is a visit from His Eminence, Harry Belafonte. The 90-year-old performer plays an instructor sitting in the style of rattan peacock chair that Huey Newton once immortalized, recounting the grisly details of a lynching. The point of this lecture is to mention that the vicious mob had been ginned up by a viewing of 1915’s racist sensation Birth of a Nation. One definition of doubleconsciousness: loving cinema while realizing it sometimes poisons people. This is a big movie from Lee, warm and smart. It’s not essentially radical, unless the subject of self-defense is radical. For instance, it comes out in favor of supporting your local police, as long as they’re trying to hunt down the Klan. BlackkKlansman has great spirit. Lee may not be wearing a hood, but he’s certainly a wizard sometimes.

CONCERT
ELDER STATESMAN Alice Cooper, the grand old man of shock rock, plays the City National Civic.
Shock Doctrine AT ITS CORE, rock & roll has always been about youthful rebellion. From the national debut of Elvis Presley—who was initially shown on television waist-up so as not to offend delicate sensibilities with his shaking hips—to transgressive modern-day artists like Marilyn Manson and GWAR, part of rock music’s mission has to been to entertain some while shocking others. And though many performers have sought the title, beginning in the very early 1970s, the reigning king of shock rock was Alice Cooper. Once upon a time, Alice Cooper was a band, not a person. Signed to a label co-founded by iconoclastic musician Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper made a pair of well-regarded but little-noticed garage rock LPs. Jumping to Warner Brothers Records and teaming up with producer Bob Ezrin, Alice Cooper embarked on a path filled with hit singles including “I’m Eighteen,” “Under My Wheels,” “Be My Lover,” “Elected, “No More Nice Guy” and the teenage anthem “School’s Out.” By 1975, the group was no more, but lead singer Vincent Furnier had taken Alice Cooper as his stage name. As a solo artist, he would go on to score more hit albums and singles; six of his songs reached the Top 40. Nobody’s idea of a virtuoso vocalist, Cooper made the most of what he had, focusing instead on putting on a thrilling and memorable show. “I was at the forefront of a movement bringing theatrics to rock,” Cooper says.
With a keen sense of what his public wanted, Cooper served up memorable fist-pumping rockers that became part of a generation’s life soundtrack. And from the early 1970s onward, he cultivated his reputation as a master of the macabre, a supreme showman and one of the prime movers of theatrical shock rock. With a stage show that often included mock executions (Cooper’s stage props feature a guillotine), Alice Cooper pushed the limits of what was acceptable onstage, but he always did so in the name of entertainment. A Paranormal Evening Today at age 70, Cooper with Alice Cooper hasn’t lost his edge, nor his motivation to create. His most Aug 14, 8pm, $49.50+ recent studio album, 2017’s City National Civic, San Jose Paranormal, reunited him with Ezrin, charting in 14 countries. sanjosetheaters.org “He’s my guru when it comes to writing,” says Cooper. And in a surprising move, that well-received disc saw the first-ever reunion of the surviving members of Alice Cooper—the group—on three tracks. “And it sounds like the original band,” Cooper says. Nearly 50 years and as many albums after his majorlabel debut, Alice Cooper is still fusing metal, melody and mayhem. —Bill Kopp

8PM FRI 8/10 • PLANES ON PAPER & JOSIAH JOHNSON @ RED ROCK COFFEE Go and go early. For a $10 suggested donation, this show is one of the more top-notch line-ups this Friday night. I didn’t know either act until I researched them and listened to their tunes. Alt-folk-country at its best. The harmonies captured by Jen and Navid of Planes On Paper are elegant and carefully handed out like melting ice cream to eager kids. I want be one of those kids, especially if they are handing out real ice cream cones. Me and my fantasies! Also, if you like the band The Head and the Heart, you’ll appreciate co-frontman Josiah Johnson adding sugar to those already sweet vocals. 201 Castro St, Mountain View
7:30PM SUN 8/12 • SJZ PRESENTS JACKIE GAGE @ CAFE STRITCH There are so many fantastic acts playing San Jose Jazz this week. This year’s line-up is pretty eclectic and seems to be reaching for the younger crowd. It’s almost unfortunate that there are only three days worth of music. But holy hell are those 72 hours packed! One of my favorites is Jackie Gage who is no stranger to San Jose or being an incredible performer. Gage and Stritch are a perfect pairing as far as I’m concerned. I’m just so glad she keeps coming home to show us all the worldliness she’s accumulating on the East Coast. Why are there lots of bridal magazines but no magazines for grooms? What does that imply?—A Male Consider men’s general lack of interest in wedding planning. Of course, if men did the organizing, there’d probably be a paintball duel to the altar, strippers serving nachos and a minister who ends the ceremony with, “You may now have a threesome with the bride and her sister.” However, what we could call the “wedding-industrial complex”—with $56 billion in sales in the U.S. in 2017 (per The Wedding Report)—is driven mainly by women (and, more recently and to a lesser extent by very stylish gay men). So we often hear about “bridezillas”— human nightmares losing it over pickywicky wedding details—but it’s the rare man who even comes close to caring enough to be called a “groomzilla.” In fact, though many women start planning their weddings years before meeting a potential groom, there probably isn’t a guy out there who gave thought to, say, what the centerpieces would be until he absolutely had to: “Um...honey, am I crazy, or is that an electric cattle prod you’re holding?” And frankly, for the average guy getting married, the ideal situation would be to propose, get clocked with a bowling trophy, and wake up 10 months later to one of his bros shaking a tux in his face and saying, “Hose off and get dressed, man. You gotta be at the chapel in an hour!” These sex differences in wedding micromanagement reflect evolved sex differences in what evolutionary psychologists David Buss and David Schmitt call “sexual strategies.” These refer to long-term vs. short-term orientation in mating—committed sex vs. casual sex. Though there are times when casual sex is the optimal choice for a woman, in general, women tend to benefit more from a “long-term mating strategy”— holding out for men who are willing and able to stick around to protect and provide for their children. (Think handsome prince and all that “happily ever after” stuff vs. handsome hookup.) Men will suck it up and opt for a longterm relationship for a number of reasons, Buss and Schmitt explain: because being on the hunt is time-, energy- and resourcesucking and because “highly desirable” women can hold out for commitment. But because a man can, let’s just say, sheet ‘em
and street ‘em and still have a pretty good chance of passing on his genes, men often benefit more from a “short-term sexual strategy”—quantity over quality. Still, this isn’t all that’s driving the average man’s lack of interest in the color of the posies on the dessert table. There’s also the evolved sex difference in status competition—the differing ways men and women compete for status intrasexually (with others of their sex). A major way men compete for status with other men is by being accompanied by smoking-hot women. These hotties don’t have to be wives or girlfriends; they just shouldn’t look like they’re with a guy simply because his credit card cleared at the rent-a-“model” website. Women, on the other hand, evolved to compete for status with other women by pairing up with the most high-status man they can get. Though we’re living in modern times, we’re still driven by Stone Age psychology. In ancestral times, a woman’s partner’s status would have been a life-or-death issue, affecting the level of eats, housing and protection she had for herself and her children. In other words, so-called “princess culture” was created by evolution, not Disney. So little girls, to the great dismay of their progressive parents, are drawn to those stories of the scullery maid who ends up marrying the prince—the rich, high-status, hunky dude (good genes!) who could have any woman but finds our girl uniquely bewitching. A man bewitched is a man less likely to stray, so the fairy tale is actually a commitment fantasy. The “fairy tale wedding” is a celebration of that—the successful completion of an evolutionary imperative. Getting back to the male point of view, a guy gets married because he has become “bewitched” (“fallen in love,” in contemporary terms) and wants a life partner and/or a family and realizes that sex with a string of strippers is not the path to suburban dad-hood. However, even when a man decides to commit to one particular woman, his evolved drive for sexual variety remains. So to finally answer your question: No man wants to buy “Grooms!” magazine because a wedding is, in a sense, a giant frothy funeral for his sex life.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Palestinian American
writer Susan Abulhawa writes that in the Arab world, to say a mere "thank you" is regarded as spiritless and ungenerous. The point of communicating gratitude is to light up with lively and expressive emotions that respond in kind to the kindness bestowed. For instance, a recipient may exclaim, "May Allah bless the hands that give me this blessing," or "Beauty is in the eyes that find me beautiful." In accordance with current astrological omens, I propose that you experiment with this approach. Be specific in your praise. Be exact in your appreciation. Acknowledge the unique mood and meaning of each rich exchange.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you need this advice from mythologist Joseph Campbell: "Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again." He says it's "a rescue land . . . some field of action where there is a spring of ambrosia—a joy that comes from inside, not something external that puts joy into you—a place that lets you experience your own will and your own intention and your own wish." Do you have such a place, Taurus? If not, now is a great time to find one. If you do, now is a great time to go there for a spell and renew the hell out of yourself. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When he was 20 years old, future U.S. President Thomas Jefferson had an awkward encounter with a young woman who piqued his interest. He was embarrassed by the gracelessness he displayed. For two days afterward, he endured a terrible headache. We might speculate that it was a psychosomatic reaction. I bring this up because I'm wondering if your emotions are also trying to send coded messages to you via your body. Are you aware of unusual symptoms or mysterious sensations? See if you can trace them back to their source in your soul. CANCER (June 21-July 22): There's a zone in your

AD SIZE:
psyche where selfishness overlaps generosity, where the line between being emotionally manipulative and gracefully magnanimous almost disappears. With both hope and trepidation for the people in your life, I advise you to hang out in that grey area for now. Yes, it's a risk. You could end up finessing people mostly for your own good and making them think it's mostly for their own good. But the more likely outcome is that you will employ ethical abracadabra to bring out the best in others, even as you get what you want, too.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You probably gaze at the sky
enough to realize when there's a full moon. But you may not monitor the heavenly cycles closely enough to tune in to the new moon, that phase each month when the lunar orb is invisible. We astrologers regard it as a ripe time to formulate fresh intentions. We understand it to be a propitious moment to plant metaphorical seeds for the desires you want to fulfill in the coming four weeks. When this phenomenon happens during the astrological month of Leo, the potency is intensified for you. Your next appointment with this holiday is August 10th and 11th.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In her poem "Dogfish,"
Virgo poet Mary Oliver writes, "I wanted the past to go away, I wanted to leave it." Why? Because she wanted her life "to open like a hinge, like a wing." I'm happy to tell you, Virgo, that you now have more power than usual to make your past go away. I'm also pleased to speculate that as you perform this service for yourself, you'll be skillful enough to preserve the parts of your past that inspire you, even as you shrink and neutralize memories that drain you. In response to this good work, I bet your life will open like a hinge, like a wing—no later than your birthday, and most likely before that.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran fashion writer Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) championed the beauty of the strong nose. She didn't approve of women wanting to look like "piglets and kittens." If she were alive today, she'd be pleased that nose jobs in the U.S. have declined 43 percent since 2000. According to journalist Madeleine Schwartz writing in *Garage* magazine, historians of rhinoplasty say there has been a revival of appreciation for the distinctive character revealed in an unaltered nose. I propose, Libra, that in accordance with current astrological omens, we extrapolate some

even bigger inspiration from that marvelous fact. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to celebrate and honor and express pride in your idiosyncratic natural magnificence.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): "Maybe happiness
is this: not feeling like you should be elsewhere, doing something else, being someone else." This definition, articulated by author Isaac Asimov, will be an excellent fit for you between now and September 20. I suspect you'll be unusually likely to feel at peace with yourself and at home in the world. I don't mean to imply that every event will make you cheerful and calm. What I'm saying is that you will have an extraordinary capacity to make clear decisions based on accurate appraisals of what's best for you.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I've compiled a
list of new blessings you need and deserve during the next 14 months. To the best of my ability, I will assist you to procure them. Here they are: a practical freedom song and a mature love song; an exciting plaything and a renaissance of innocence; an evocative new symbol that helps mobilize your evolving desires; escape from the influence of a pest you no longer want to answer to; insights about how to close the gap between the richest and poorest parts of yourself; and the cutting of a knot that has hindered you for years.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "It has become clear
to me that I must either find a willing nurturer to cuddle and nuzzle and whisper sweet truths with me for six hours or else seek sumptuous solace through the aid of eight shots of whiskey." My Capricorn friend Tammuz confided that message to me. I wouldn't be surprised if you were feeling a comparable tug. According to my assessment of the Capricorn zeitgeist, you acutely need the revelations that would become available to you through altered states of emotional intelligence. A lavish whoosh of alcohol might do the trick, but a more reliable and effective method would be through immersions in intricate, affectionate intimacy.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Not even five percent of
the world's population lives in a complete democracy. Congratulations to Norway, Canada, Australia, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Denmark, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Sweden. Sadly, three countries where my column is published—the U.S., Italy, and France—are categorized as "flawed democracies." Yet they're far better than the authoritarian regimes in China and Russia. (Source: The Economist.) I offer this public service announcement as a prelude to your homework assignment. According to my astrological analysis, you will personally benefit from working to bring more democracy into your personal sphere. How can you ensure that people you care about feel equal to you, and have confidence that you will listen to and consider their needs, and believe they have a strong say in shaping your shared experiences?
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Mystic poet Kabir wrote, "The flower blooms for the fruit: when the fruit comes, the flower withers." He was invoking a metaphor to describe his spiritual practice and reward. The hard inner work he did to identify himself with God was the blooming flower that eventually made way for the fruit. The fruit was his conscious, deeply felt union with God. I see this scenario as applicable to your life, Pisces. Should you feel sadness about the flower's withering? It's fine to do so. But the important thing is that you now have the fruit. Celebrate it! Enjoy it! Homework: If you could make money from doing exactly what you love to do, what would it be? INCE THE RECENT legalization of marijuana, it’s been easier than ever roll up a joint and get high with some friends. But the growing cultural and systemic acceptance of pot smoking doesn’t mean the rules of the road are any less lax; it’s just that enforcing them has been complicated. Unlike alcohol intoxication, which can be measured in blood alcohol content, the presence of marijuana in a driver’s system doesn’t necessarily indicate that they’re not OK to drive. But an Oaklandbased company may have figured out a way to clear things up for law enforcement trying to police stoned driving. Founded in 2014, Hound Labs created the first pot breathalyzer, which the company says can accurately detect whether a person consumed the drug within the past two hours—the peak time frame for intoxication. The breathalyzer then displays results within minutes. Hound Labs co-founders Mike Lynn, a doctor and reserve deputy sheriff, Jenny Lynn, an entrepreneur, and Kuni Oh, a patent attorney, say their invention pulls double duty by measuring alcohol impairment as well. “We are trying to make the establishment of impairment around marijuana rational and to balance fairness and safety,” CEO Mike Lynn explained to NPR. Currently, law enforcement in California and throughout the U.S. rely on field sobriety tests or simple observation to catch signs of marijuana use. But stoned drivers could often avoid detection by popping a breath mint. Officials say driving under the influence of cannabis is getting worse. According to a 2014 survey by the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly a quarter of drivers tested positive for at least one drug that impedes safe driving—a concerning increase from the years prior. Though there’s still some debate about what THC levels in a person’s breath, blood or saliva cause functional impairment, several states that have legalized the drug also set their legal guidelines for driving while high. In Colorado, Illinois, Montana and Washington state, motorists with a THC blood concentration of 5 nanograms or more are considered too high to get behind the wheel, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. In Nevada and Ohio, the statute sets the threshold at 2 nanograms. Hound Labs plans to roll out a series of pilot programs with police departments this fall to test the new breathalyzer. That said, better to stay safe than sorry. Bum a ride from a friend or do what any responsible person would do and call a Lyft.—Dominoe Ibarra
