Pregnant Pause
comments@metronews.com
I arrived at the wedding reception battling nausea from a bout of food poisoning. So I tried to find my footing by leaning against the wall on the patio, nursing a water while chatting with a couple of guests. That’s when you locked eyes with me and barreled through a sea of guests to say hi. You noticed that I was just sipping water and then blurted out, “Oh, you must be pregnant!” I shook my head, embarrassed that you would say something like that loud enough to make a bunch of people turn their heads to look at my belly. “No,” I reply, “I can’t even get pregnant, thank you very much.” But you insisted, bringing up the must-be-knocked-up thing quite loudly at least four more times until someone saw my discomfort and came to my rescue. Next time, show a little tact.

RE: SHERIFF CHALLENGER BLAMES ELECTIONS STAFF FOR MISSING KEY DEADLINE, NEWS, SEPT. 12 If he cannot competently file documents in a timely manner, how can he competently run the sheriff’s office? Shifting blame is not helpful. It just makes one look untrustworthy and irresponsible. How much did this unavoidable mistake cost the taxpayers in terms of lawyers and county employees’ time?

San Jose’s daily paper of record may dismiss sheriff candidate JOHN HIROKAWA’s response to a slew of racist, sexist and transphobic texts exchanged by a clique of deputies as a “waning scandal,” but it’s an issue that continues to haunt the retired jails chief. At an NAACP forum last week, five-term They Sheriff LAURIE SMITH Did reminded attendees What? of Hirokawa’s alliance with two union SEND TIPS TO presidents involved FLY@ in the texting ring— METRONEWS. COM LANCE SCIMECA, who was fired and DON MORRISSEY, who resigned as head of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) but remains on patrol. Then, on Monday, the supposedly “waning scandal” cost Hirokawa an endorsement from the Santa Clara County Democratic Club. “I had reason to believe that he lied at the NAACP forum,” said an openly gay Democrat who felt personally offended by some of the texts and asked to withhold his name for fear of online harassment from the DSA. So when club president ROB MEANS asked if anyone at Monday’s meeting wanted to speak against the endorsement, the concerned committee member reluctantly raised his hand and explained his contention. In arbitration records, Hirokawa says deputies had a First Amendment right to text whatever they want off-duty on personal devices, and that he refused to even read them as undersheriff over concerns of violating their right to privacy. Once parts of his testimony became public, Hirokawa changed his tune; only then did he condemn Morrissey for espousing comments about a “shemale” and sexual assault in jail. The committee member then proceeded to recite some of the texts while Hirokawa sat at the front of the room turning beet red. Then, just like in the primary, Hirokawa failed to muster enough votes for an endorsement. Not that it matters, really. The local Democratic Central Committee—state party’s official body in the South Bay—carried its support for Hirokawa to the fall runoff.
-TAKES A VILLAGE Just two days after the un-permitted Hope Village pilot project opened, authorities gave Charlie Nelson (pictured) and six other homeless residents 72 hours to pack up and leave.
Losing Hope Hope Village, an unsanctioned homeless camp, sprang up as an act of civil disobedience BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH
S
AN JOSE HOPE Village stood for a full week after the California Highway Patrol gave the unsanctioned homeless camp 72 hours to clear out. But the grace period came to an end this week.
From 7:30am to late morning Monday, the camp’s seven homeless residents joined volunteers and orange-vested arrestees sentenced to community service to dismantle tents, pack up lockboxes full of personal items and haul everything down the street to a temporary site.
While the camp sprang up in secret Sept. 8 on an empty parking lot by Ruff Road and Hedding Street, an audience of TV news reporters and local dignitaries watched it leave. To Curtis—a 53-year-old Hope Village tenant who withheld his surname— the spotlight felt overwhelming after seven years of homelessness. “You get used to nobody seeing you,” he said, pausing to survey the scene while the camp’s resident dog, whippetChihuahua mix Lucky, excitedly scampered around. “And now, all of a sudden, everybody’s here—not just today, it’s been like that all week.” Though its future remains
uncertain, Hope Village accomplished in a matter of days what no elected leader in the South Bay has had the political will or vision to pull off. The uninvited, un-permitted and privately funded pilot project created a real-world model for a safe, organized encampment as a short-term reprieve for the unsheltered. It was clean and orderly with strict rules against drugs and drinking and thorough screening for residents. It offered privacy, security, a portable toilet, tents on sturdy wood platforms and running water by way of a mobile shower. The stability helped one resident, 63-year-old handyman and camp host Charlie Nelson, find a job. “It seems that all up and down the political levels here, people have realized that this is a viable alternative for those who are on the street and it needs to be given a chance,” said Peter Miron-Conk, 72, co-founder of the nonprofit Casa de Clara Catholic Worker and one of the lead organizers of the camp. “There was a lot of hostility and resistance to the idea of sanctioned encampments, and it looks like we’ve won that battle.” For a day or so, it looked like the CHP
San Jose has toyed with the notion of sanctioned encampments ever since dismantling “The Jungle,” one of the nation’s largest homeless settlements, back in 2014. San Jose Councilman Tam Nguyen even spent the night at a permitted camp up in Eugene, Oregon, as part of a study mission. The idea never materialized. Mayor Sam Liccardo opposed sanctioned encampments in favor of permanent supportive housing, and an effort to build tiny sleeping cabins for the homeless ran into one delay after another because of community backlash. In 2016, the city teamed up with Santa Clara County to solicit bids for a pilot project, but it “did not yield any successful applications that could address the potential regulatory issues of sanctioned encampments, leaving no viable option to provide such a program in either a time or cost effective manner,” San Jose Housing Director Jacky MoralesFerrand concluded in an Aug. 28, 2017 report to the council. Miron-Conk and a grassroots coalition of volunteers created Hope Village out of both compassion and frustration—compassion for the homeless and frustration with local agencies for spending millions of dollars a year clearing illegal encampments and displacing people with nowhere else to stay. “We recognize that this isn’t a permanent solution,” Miron-Conk said, “but where are people going to go in the meantime?” After seeing Hope Village in person, several elected officials reconsidered their stance on sanctioned camps. While Hope Village awaits word from Sacramento, supervisors Chavez and Cortese and Councilman Rocha have set dates to discuss the next steps. All three noted in their respective memos that while permanent housing remains the only sure solution for homelessness, they now have a stronger appreciation for organized camps as a viable option for temporary relief. Miron-Conk said he’s heartened by the support, but has some doubts and knows it takes continuous work to make sure public officials follow through once the spotlight dims. “You know, it looks like a lot of these officials have seen the light,” he reflected. “The question now is, how deep does this run?”

would allow Hope Village to stay despite pushback from the nearby office of the California Employment Development Department (EDD), which owns the rarely used lot across from a longabandoned traffic court. The 72-hour deadline came and went Sept. 13 with no enforcement from state police. But Hope Village volunteers received an email early the next morning warning that the eviction would proceed. CHP officers relayed the same message around 6:30pm that evening, well after government offices had closed for the day, and said the new deadline was set for 8am the following Monday. “The CHP spoke with the group and issued a courtesy notice allowing the group 72 hours to make alternative accommodations, as they were illegally trespassing and occupying state property without proper permits,” the agency’s San Jose division explained in a Facebook post after the eviction. “The CHP has been working with city and county officials to try to find a suitable location for the Hope Village individuals and move them from EDD property. CHP has taken a very humanistic approach and understands the complexities of the circumstances. For that reason, the CHP extended the order to move several times while a resolution was sought.” Thankfully, organizers—a core group comprising Miron-Conk, Jacquie Heffner, Edie and Robby Brodsky, Karen Lattin and Andrew Lanier—had direct lines to state legislators. They called state Sen. Jim Beall (D-San Jose), Assemblyman Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and Assemblyman Evan Low (D-San Jose), urging them to intervene. Activists and local officials emailed and phoned Gov. Jerry Brown’s office imploring him for help, too. All that attention bought Hope Village more time and pressured the powers that be to find another site for the camp. SEIU Local 1768 offered a grassy plot next to its union hall until Santa Clara County identifies a publicly owned place to host it, as promised by supervisors Cindy Chavez and Dave Cortese. San Jose Councilman Don Rocha, who’s running for county supervisor, penned a memo directing the city to help in the search. “We’ve set things in motion,” Miron-Conk reflected the night before the early morning eviction. “But we’re still trying to figure out where to take things from here.”

Opioid Deaths BY THE NUMBERS
27
The number of confirmed opioid deaths in Santa Clara County from Jan. 1 through Aug. 13. Of those, 15 were related to illicit drugs: four from fentanyl and 11 from heroin. The rest were from physician-prescribed medication. There may be more, but the Medical Examiner-Coroner has yet to issue a cause of death in those cases.
70
The number of people who died in 2017 from opioid overdoses, down from 78 the year prior. This year is on track to see another drop in fatal opioid overdoses.

BOOKING YEAH The Silicon Valley Organization canceled San Jose Vice Mayor Magdalena’s booking on an upcoming study trip to ensure that Mayor Sam Liccardo could join the delegation instead.
Vice Mayor Uninvited From Seattle Trip to Make Way for Mayor Sam Liccardo BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH After blasting his colleagues for interrupting city business for international travel, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo found himself having to abstain from a Seattle trip to hold himself to the same standard. That is, until the trip’s sponsors gave him an out. Back in April, Liccardo publicly rebuked five of his fellow council members for taking a Sister City trip to Okayama, Japan, forcing a neighborhood services subcommittee to cancel for lack of a quorum. The mayor risked putting his elected colleagues in a similar predicament next month by joining four other councilors as part of a business delegation to Seattle, Washington, and considered dropping out to avoid causing the fast-moving wheels of city business to grind to a halt. But the Silicon Valley Organization, or SVO—the
South Bay’s business chamber of commerce—wasn’t having it. The group had marketed Liccardo’s participation to Seattle officials and attendees, and planned to have him deliver the keynote and a questionand-answer session on the first day of the early October excursion. “They expressed concern that my absence would create a last-minute hole in their program,” Liccardo said. With San Jose anticipating a new Google HQ in downtown, SVO also hoped the mayor would glean insight from Seattle’s experience with Amazon. So the SVO had Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco take the hit. Last week, SVO apparatchik Eddie Truong called Carrasco’s District 5 office to break the news, telling the policy aide on the other line that a Beyoncé and Jay-Z concert forced the hotel to un-book a bunch of guests—the vice mayor being one of them.
Another answer came later in the day when someone from SVO told a city staffer that Carrasco being uninvited had more to do with leaving enough folks for a quorum at the Oct. 3 Rules and Open Government Committee meeting so Liccardo could take the trip without appearing inconsistent. Now, with the vice mayor out, the Oct. 3-5 study trip will include Liccardo, his fellow business-aligned councilors Dev Davis and Johnny Khamis as well as labor-backed Councilman Sergio Jimenez. Carrasco was none too pleased with the way the SVO handled the situation. “I had hoped this trip would be an opportunity to learn about corporate citizenship and how the impact of companies’ expansion can benefit communities like mine on the East Side of San Jose,” she said. “Hopefully on the next trip, Beyoncé will share her room with me.”
The average age of men who died from fentanyl overdoses in this county. Among the 72,000 drug overdose deaths estimated nationwide, the sharpest increase occurred among those related to fentanyl and fentanyl knockoffs.
15
Number of law enforcement agencies in this county that have trained their staff how to prevent fatal overdoses, including by using an opioidantidote known as Narcan. So far this year, officers have saved two lives by administering Narcan, the brand name for naloxone.
50
The level of milligrams per dose of prescription opioids that automatically comes with a side of Narcan if it’s dispensed at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center pharmacies. The county also offers Narcan training every Friday to anyone.
200
Number of patient slots a month the county provides by hiring a doctor to oversee medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid dependency. These medications include methadone and Suboxone, which curb cravings.
15 MILLION
Number of people worldwide who suffer from opioid dependence. Most use illicit drugs, but a growing number in the U.S. are using prescription meds. Globally, there are about 69,000 opioid-related deaths every year.

Muse Matrix Writer makes labyrinthian connections with poet Jorge Luis Borges BY GARY SINGH
T
WO-AND-A-HALF years ago, the anti-man-abouttown visited the gravesite of legendary author Jorge Luis Borges in Geneva, Switzerland. Borges was a unique figure at the top of 20th century literature and a major influence on me, so in Geneva I made a desperate pact with him. Standing at his grave, I said: “Alright old man, I will keep writing, just show me how to make a living.
Give me a sign. Anything.” Sure enough, I was awarded a fellowship
soon thereafter. I guess he was looking over my shoulder. That was in 2016, but just a few weeks ago in downtown San Jose, Borges spun back into my orbit from multiple dimensions at once, just to make sure I was still writing and keeping up my end of the bargain. The resultant matrix of synchronicity was transformational, like walking into a hall of mirrors I didn’t want to escape. It all started on Aug. 24, Borges’s birthday, of course. There in the coffee shop I sat, laptop in front of me, translating my thoughts into characters on a screen, all
while distracting myself by reading quotes and bits about Borges on social media. I posted the previously mentioned column about visiting his grave, when suddenly, far away from across the street, the owner of Anno Domini responded, relaying news that the gallery’s next show would include Denis Korkh’s paintings inspired by Borges’ book, Labyrinths. The creative life juice began to flow. As anyone who follows this column knows by now, I am a love slave to the muses of synchronicity, so I just knew this matrix of intrigue was nowhere near over. Two weeks later on Sept. 6, the day before the Korkh exhibit opened, I spotted a used copy of Labyrinths while rifling through the shelves of books for sale at the Beat Museum in San Francisco. I didn’t buy it because I thought I already owned a copy. Turned out I was mistaken. I only owned Ficciones, which contains several of the same short stories. The Korkh exhibit, titled In Borges’ Labyrinths, opened the next night,
attracting the usual array of artists, patrons, stoned twenty-somethings and outré characters marveling at visuals inspired by Borges’ writings. The accompanying text panels included quotes from various Borges masterpieces like, “The Library of Babel,” “The Zahir” and “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius.” At presstime, several paintings had already sold. This was more than enough serendipity to imply a heightened sense of awareness on my part, easily enough to spark more characters on a screen. However, another dimension to the intrigue emerged four days later. On Sept. 11, in what some are calling an unrelated event, the poet Stephen Kessler gave a reading at WORKS/San Jose, exactly one block over from Anno Domini. A major figure in the world of poetry, Kessler is known for many endeavors, including the years he spent translating the poetry of Jorge Luis Borges. Many of those poems are included in a large volume, still popular. Kessler also helped edit and translate an entire 300-page book of Borges’ sonnets, a landmark publication several years ago. At WORKS, Kessler sold copies of his most recent book of poetry, titled, Garage Elegies. I flipped it open, skipping right to page 44—a poem titled, “Translator in His Labyrinth.” The poem opens with the narrator proofreading both languages and making final tunings with the dead poet looking over his shoulder. I felt like Yogi Berra Borges was telling me about deja vu. All over again. Clearly I was in a Borges story, with past, present and future all becoming one and the same. Or maybe I was in a halfway house between a column and a short story, the only difference being that everything I’ve just written actually happened. A Borgesian theme would be: Does the author write the column or does the column write the author? Do Korkh’s paintings function as translations of Borges’ stories, as Borges himself would have suggested? I don’t know, but two days later, I went right back to the Beat Museum in San Francisco and nabbed that copy of Labyrinths. To Borges I will make a necessary pact, all over again: I am still writing, please keep showing me how to make a living.

HERE KITTY KITTY Los Gatos High School celebrates 110 years serving the community by looking back at the school’s history through memorabilia and ephemera— like this image, from the front of an old yearbook.
HUNDRED YEARS ago, the word “teenager” had yet to make its debut in the American lexicon. Not only was there no word to describe that awkward stage between childhood and adulthood, there was also very little social context to explain the concept that we so easily identify today. But a few decades later, when suburbanization spread and the middle class grew, so did a young, new market audience. Automobiles brought autonomy, and suddenly, young people had a vehicle for exploring and understanding the world around them. Cue the Thunder Road drag race scene from Grease.

The 20th century was the birthplace for much of that transformative change, especially in the United States. Children went from being economically valuable contributors at the turn of the century to being “economically worthless but emotionally priceless,” in the words of sociologist Viviana Zelizer in the mid-1980s. It’s one of the first things that comes to Elizabeth Sweet’s mind when asked about the economic and social shifts that created the modern teenager. An assistant professor of sociology at San Jose State University, Sweet researches childhood and children’s material culture and argues that the commercialization of the teenager has heavily contributed to its lasting prominence in popular culture. “This idea that there was a group of people who were not working primarily for their families but had income they could now spend emerged,” she says. “So marketers
and retailers really picked up on this and began to sell to them. The glamorized teen became the center of a lot of pop culture in this period.” The numbers back up Sweet’s claim: Teens now spend an average of $91 billion annually on everything from virtual reality games to musical experiences like Outside Lands or Coachella according to data by Statistic Brain Research Institute. Today, teenagedom rules everything around us. The proliferation of teen experiences represented in films, music and TV now spans the world—from the Beach Boys to Taylor Swift and from Molly Ringwald’s painfully popular high school characters to Rachel McAdams’ infamous Regina George. And yet it all still feels almost entirely American. Perhaps that’s because America invented the teenager, both as a term and a concept. Or maybe it’s because high school is just so relatable—a rite of passage for us all, marked by bad acne, clothes that never fit right, self discovery (for better or worse), and a general awkwardness most would
rather forget. But why does this fleeting period loom so large within the American psyche? “Adolescence plays such a formative role in many people’s lives: it’s a period where you’re on the cusp of no longer being wholly dependent on the family of origin, but not wholly able to live in the adult world either,” explains Sweet. “It’s a time where people are forming their identities, learning how to have relationships with one another, and there are a lot of emotions involved.” A new exhibition at the New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) aims to unpack that concept using one of the South Bay’s most visually iconic, locally recognized alma maters as its case study: Los Gatos High School (LGHS). “Sis Boom Bah! The Life and Times of Los Gatos High School” is an expansive, 18-month-long exhibition that dives deep into the 110-year history of the wealthy Silicon Valley suburb’s one and only high school. Retelling the legacy of the institution and its many notable alumni, as well as the global trends and politics that influenced Los Gatos High over the decades, “Sis Boom Bah!” recounts local history through the eyes, stories and artifacts of the
M
teenagers who once walked its halls, exploring the indelible mark that high school has had on the town and on American culture. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Los Gatos is a very Friday Night Lights kind of town,” Lisa Coscino says with a hearty laugh. She’s the executive director of NUMU, and we’re chatting on the phone one day before the exhibition is set to open. There’s a whole slew of activities planned for the unveiling, including performances from LGHS’s band, color guard and cheer team, and she’s scrambling to put the final touches on the exhibit, which is still receiving submissions, thanks to an open call the museum put out for LGHS artifacts and ephemera. At one point, Coscino pauses to explain that she’s not from Los Gatos, nor did she have an especially lifealtering high school experience. But if anything, that’s why she’s so thrilled about “Sis Boom Bah.” She’s excited to see how audiences from all over the Bay Area will react. “If any of us are lucky enough to live beyond 18 years, we’ve all gone to high school,” she says. “So I like to look at Los Gatos High as a microcosm within a macrocosm; this exhibition is all about a local connection to the town, but it’s also about high school’s global relevance.”

OLD SCHOOL A drawing of Los Gatos High School before it was remodeled in a neoclassical style.
A Homegrown Idea Two years ago, Amy Long had a big idea. She had been working at NUMU for a while, and she realized one day that the museum had yet to explore the history and roots of the town’s most popular building: the massive neoclassical schoolhouse with white pillars and a sprawling lawn that sits just a block down the road from her office. Long proposed her idea of a high school retrospective but with an added twist: The exhibition, while featuring LGHS as its focal point, would source all of its materials from the community to narrate a high school history by and from the very people who once walked its halls. Though Long is no longer at the museum, NUMU staff ran with her initial research and concept development, expanding it to include hundreds of unique and personal items. Instead of putting out a call for work to artists, NUMU solicited materials from alumni, current students and the high school itself. Cristiano Colantoni, the exhibitions and collections manager at NUMU, has spent the better part of the past nine months fielding inquiries and cataloging the hundreds of keepsakes and memorabilia submitted for the show. Unlike traditional exhibitions where curators carefully and deliberately choose which pieces to include, Colantoni had to create a narrative based purely on voluntarily submitted items. “One of my biggest challenges in pulling this exhibition together was
getting our message across that no object was too small or insignificant to be included,” he explains. “Every keepsake tells a story, and if it was significant enough to keep, then it’s an important piece of this shared history. So rather than a straightforward history exhibition, our goal was to create an experience and trigger nostalgia that would bring visitors back to their teenage years, whether or not they attended LGHS.”
If These Walls Could Talk As I descend the curved staircase to NUMU’s ground floor gallery, “Sis Boom Bah!” is audible even before I reach the landing below. The raucous sounds of students cheering and singing climbs up and around the stairwell, reminding me of my own high school spirit rallies. I later discover the noise is coming from one of the many flat screen TVs arranged throughout the exhibition, this one specifically featuring a reel of Lip Dubs, or sing-along music videos, where students and teachers show off their school spirit while lip synching to Top 40 hits. Throughout other areas of the exhibit, video monitors loop interviews with Los Gatos High alumni, a former principal, and other notable figures like Charlie Wedemeyer, the famed LGHS football coach diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, whose life story was featured in a PBS documentary. accomplishments are prominently displayed in the exhibition. “I did check with my kids before taking a whole lot of their stuff, but I was planning to take it anyway,” she says with a laugh. “Once I sent them photos of their stuff in the exhibit, they agreed it was pretty cool.” McAdams, who has volunteered on and off at NUMU for three years, saw the museum’s call for items for “Sis Boom Bah!” and was instantly reminded of the keepsakes and mementos she’d saved from her own children’s time at LGHS. Now, her daughter Emma’s cheerleading uniform and prom photos have a place in the exhibit, as well as a newspaper clipping of her son Ian singing at Carnegie Hall with the high school’s jazz group, Jazz Purr. Hearing McAdams’ story reminded me of my folder of high school ephemera, a mishmash of bad photography projects and newspaper clippings that my own mother has since stowed away someplace in my childhood home. As an alumna of LGHS myself, many of my high school achievements felt insignificant in the moment. Walking through the exhibition, I felt fortunate that my parents had the foresight to hold onto parts of my adolescence that I desperately wanted to grow away from—items that could easily be displayed alongside McAdams’ children’s accomplishments.
McAdams says the exhibition is past due and speaks to the strong sense of community that the school has historically fostered. Acting as a central hub for everything from sporting events to community forums, Los Gatos High School has long been a locale for community gathering and healing in good times and bad. “If you look at the high school geographically, its at the heart of the town,” McAdams explains. “So it’s important that people know their local history, have pride in it and see Los Gatos as a community rather than just a place to live. I think the exhibit helps people feel a sense of pride that people have always had living here.” Peters and Viera are classmates from the graduating class of 1971, but they didn’t reconnect until their 40th reunion in 2011. Now, they co-head the Los Gatos High School Alumni Association, which helps organize about 10 reunions and meet-and-greets a year and fundraises for student scholarships. A year before NUMU put out the call for works for “Sis Boom Bah,” the two began asking other alumni to donate memorabilia to be displayed at class reunions. So when NUMU approached them for their input, they’d already amassed a small collection of keepsakes ready for display. “We collected a bunch of stuff over the years, and that allowed us to bring a lot to NUMU,” says Peters,

Although “Sis Boom Bah!” is now open to the public, Coscino and her team’s curatorial work is hardly finished. Unlike most exhibitions that stop curating once the artwork has been chosen, NUMU will continue accepting submissions through January 2020, adding them to the everexpanding exhibit’s walls. As more patrons visit and contribute their own unique stories and memories, the collection will grow and shift to encompass them. “My hope is to get COLOR GUARD Some of the most ornate every possible person artifacts on display are the LGHS who wants to tell their marching band uniforms. story included by the time the exhibit ends,” says Coscino. “The end whose own class ring, prom photo date will be when the stories cease to and diploma and report cards are reveal themselves. Ultimately, this is displayed in the exhibition. “It’s been all about involving the community a lot of fun delving into this because in the process and getting them there are new things we’ve discovered excited to include their own along the way. Spirited Away OSJ opens new season with Mozart’s ‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’ BY TAD MALONE
O
PERA SAN JOSE opened its 35th season over the weekend with a funny and boisterous tale of one man’s attempt to save the love of his life from the grips of a Turkish pasha. Composed by Mozart during his fruitful middle period, The Abduction from the Seraglio was originally borne out of Austrian Emperor Joseph II’s pet project, the Nationalsingspiel—an organization created with the express purpose of showcasing Austrian operatics. In fact, The Abduction’s libretto was written by Gottlieb Stephanie, the inspector of the Nationalsingspiel.
In addition to opening OSJ’s new season, it also marks two other firsts. It is the first in the modern operatic repertoire and the first instance of an opera composed on a freelance basis, as Mozart was contracted to write the piece for Joseph II, the Holy Roman Emperor from 1764 to 1790. It was a hit upon its release in July 1782, and the opera’s success ultimately raised Mozart's reputation as a composer. Opera San Jose's rendition opens on the gates of an Ottoman palace. A man named Belmonte appears, under the auspices of visiting as a tourist. In reality, he’s there to rescue—with the help of his servant Pedrillo—his betrothed love Constanze from Pasha Selim's seraglio
(an Italian term describing a harem for wives and concubines). Their plot comes under the immediate suspicion of the pasha's moody servant, Osmin, who is nonetheless tricked or distracted by the rescuers at nearly every turn. What follows is a comical and romantic romp, emblematic of many of the period’s operas; man and woman are in love, but some evil authoritative force is also in love with the woman, and a wild turn of events eventually puts the man and woman back in each other’s arms. The show is vibrant from the jump, with the set pieces rendered like an ornate Turkish palace, complete with tall domes and turrets towering above the stage and drawing the eye in. This is extended in the second act when the set is transformed into a magnificent topiary garden with leaves covering every square inch. The setting and ambiance is further reinforced by dynamic mood lighting, casting the stage in soft, early-evening oranges and purples or high-noon desert white light depending on the scene. This attention to detail extends to the costumes, which are an assorted blast of bright colors,

textures, and arabesque patterns that transport the audience to the show’s Ottoman time period. While the opera's inanimate elements surely make an impression, it’s the performances that really shine. Belmonte, played by Matthew Grills, expresses himself through adroit physical comedy and a medium tenor voice that is as measured as it is clear. Pedrillo, played by Michael Dailey, matches his master's humorous physicality. Ashraf Sewailam, who plays pasha's surly bodyguard, Osmin, is a great foil to the protagonist pair and bellows with a strong baritone that fits his austere but royally dispositioned character. Constanze, played by Rebecca Davis, captures the woebegone spirit of her lovesick but imprisoned character— with a soft, but realistic undercurrent of sarcasm and a crystal-clear voice transitioning between highs and lows without feeling choppy. Costanze's maiden servant Blonde, played by Katrina Galka, fits into her supporting role with surefire alacrity, providing both amusement and excitement in her and her new forced suitor Osmin's endless sparring. The standout role, however, is Pasha Selim, played by Nathan Stark. Approaching the role with just the right mix of arrogant self-importance and delusion born out of unmatched authority, Stark makes Selim the perfect farcical villain, with a strong, expansive voice to match. The cast works together well, both one-on-one and in ensemble form. They bring slapstick to the already humorous opera, which helps keep the show moving along without it ever getting boring. With romantic comedies, particularly humorous romantic operas, there is a fine line between funny and ludicrous or silly, and at times the characters’ interactions feel too heightened, too exaggerated for the given situation. Nevertheless, Opera San Jose’s adaptation is clever, deftly paced and frenetically charged without ever feeling hurried. If you are even the slightest bit partial to romantic musical romps, do yourself a favor and check out the newest production from Opera San Jose.

Currently signed to Diplo’s tastemaking Mad Decent label, Garcia comes to Sunnyvale pushing the project’s latest single, “People I Know,” featuring a vocal by Australian singer Panama. (NV)

The great family norteño band from San Jose known as Los Tigres Del Norte are combining forces with Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez on a groundbreaking tour called Rompiendo Fronteras (Breaking Borders). Los Tigres is among the most popular Latino bands in the world with a real-world focus on struggle and pride in their work, often taking on subjects such as the drug trade and immigration in their music. Fernandez, son of the legendary Vicente Fernandez, has strong roots in ranchera and mariachi styles and has become a pop phenom in his own right. Together, they’ve sold more than 65 million records worldwide. (WB)

Sun, 1pm, $10 SAP Center, San Jose
Good news, fashionistas: You can now justify the expense for that hot dress or cool jacket you bought this summer. The San Jose Museum of Art is throwing a scintillating party. The Mirror Ball is the hip after-party for the Wonder Ball gala and fundraiser earlier in the evening. The after-party will feature cocktails, food, live music, dancing and intimate latenight access to all the museum’s current exhibitions, not to mention plenty of potentially well-dressed and attractive art lovers. What better way to meet an intriguing new someone than in front of a beautiful painting? SJMA members get in for just $75. (WB)
Close your eyes and imagine a major American city without cars. Imagine the streets filled only with pedestrians, skaters, cyclists and kids who wear Heelys. On Sunday, you can open your eyes and see it for yourself when six miles of city streets in downtown San Jose will be closed to cars and trucks from First Street down Monterey Road, with activity hubs on both ends and the middle—at the County Fairgrounds. The idea is to get friends and neighbors out of their expensive rolling planetdestroyers and into the streets to explore them by other means and maybe even to boldly envision a carless future. (WB)
Just as sounds of bicycles roaming the streets of downtown San Jose begin to mellow, the SoFA District is poised to come alive with the sound of music. This year’s Viva Calle runs until 3pm, but the fall edition of the SoFA Street Fair keeps rocking with free live music until 9pm. With stages all over South First Street—inside Haberdasher and Uproar, among other venues— and a whole slew of performers, including Steely Nash, Israel Sanchez, The Odd Numbers, Sweet HayaH, Ato Walker and Drawing Heaven, it’s sure to be good time. In between sets, grab a cold brew and a bite. (NV)
The buzz at the Sharks Fan Fest this year is likely to be all about newly acquired stud defenseman Erik Karlsson, who is already conjuring visions of the Stanley Cup coming to San Jose. In the meantime, hockey fans jonesing for some action on the ice can gather at the SAP Center to get photos with players and watch the Sharks Legends game, featuring an array of former Sharks, including Bryan Marchmont, Mike Ricci, Jeff Friesen and many more. Free parking is available at several SAP Center lots. All this is prologue to the new season, which kicks off Oct. 3 against Anaheim. (WB)

DOUSED Michael Moore brings a tanker full of ‘Flint Water’ to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s home in ‘Fahrenheit 11/9.’
Trumpster Fire Michael Moore takes on The Donald with his latest, ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
M
ICHAEL MOORE’S scattershot documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 is a shrewd, effective state-ofemergency work—a furious reply to the event of Nov. 9, 2016, and the way, in Moore’s view, the Democrats allowed it to happen. Much of this look at Trump’s America concentrates on Moore’s hometown of Flint, Mich., as a vision of the future of urban America. There, thousands have been poisoned by the town’s water. Michigan lies
adjacent to the Great Lakes—about 20 percent of the world’s surface freshwater supply—and yet the citizens of Flint were forced by a Republican-appointed emergency manager to drink from the filthy, foaming Flint River, a body of water so acidic that it caused lead to slough off the pipes. Sadly, even Barack Obama fecklessly brushed off the problem when he visited Flint. Moore got cred as an oracle by correctly guessing that his fellow citizens from Michigan were going to vote for Trump, and Hillary Clinton avoided campaigning in Wisconsin and Michigan because of her weaknesses as a candidate. So the implication is that weak Democratic
response in Flint leads directly to Hillary losing Michigan and thus the Electoral College. That, of course, and the way the Democratic establishment shoved aside the radical possibilities offered by Bernie Sanders. The last part, then, is the same gloomy argument you hear from Bernie-bros on Facebook. These last two years have been as politically frightening as any in our history, but the paranoia here is sometimes out of control. An example is when Moore dubs Trump speeches over footage of Hitler, because the body language of all demagogues are the same. It’s fun, but it’s not fair. It’s also not fair to speculate what goes on between Ivanka and her bizarre father. It doesn’t help that Trump clowns around with comments about Ivanka’s hotness—repeatedly—but this kind of history-writing fogs matters rather than clarifying them. “I am the storm,” Trump reportedly told one of his assistants, and deranging his onlookers with his lies and bullying is his game. Moore quotes Susan Sontag, saying “We’re only one 9/11 away from
losing our democracy.” This is almost inarguable. However, the links between the Weimar Germany and Trumpland aren’t that strong, even if Moore does interview the last surviving Nuremberg judge Ben Ferencz to consider the similar styles of The Donald and Adolf. Unlike Weimar Germany, we didn’t just lose a massive war with 7.1 million casualties, we’re not bringing shopping baskets of worthless currency to the supermarket, and Stalin isn’t looming over us, scaring the monied class into bed with dictators. Then again, I never thought Trump would win, either. The assuredness and anger of Fahrenheit 11/9 make the reactionary documentaries of Dinesh D’Souza (and his ilk) look hopeless. And Moore guards his flanks. Trump can, and will, call Moore a faker or a fatso. But here’s footage of Trump praising Moore back in the 1980s, as well as his skills being celebrated by Steve Bannon (whose money helped distribute Sicko). After all, Moore was wearing baseball caps for decades before Trump tried one on. Fahrenheit 11/9 is a buffet movie-— you take some of it and leave the rest. Moments throughout justify it handsomely, such as the interview with the unnamed female vet who says she had better access to water back in Iraq than she does in Flint. Also encouraging is a series of populist Congressional candidates including Alexandria OcasioCortez, Rashida Tlaib in Michigan, and West Virginia congressional candidate Richard Ojeda, a pugnacious doubleBronze Star winning hero. Understandably, Moore exults over the prairie fire-like teacher’s strike in West Virginia that leapfrogged over their union’s attempt to compromise. And the survivors of the Stoneman High Massacre are young and seemingly fearless. Likely you’ve already seen this film’s showstopper: young Emma Gonzalez’ electrifying speech honoring her murdered fellow students. This kind of energy is worth cheering over, rather than meeting the Trump catastrophe with loathing, laughing or utter despair. “I am the storm,” said the foolish old man, who forget that storms eventually blow themselves out.

REVIEW
GIVE A DAMN Joan Jett’s life and times are chronicled in the rockumentary ‘Bad Reputation.’
Rock Goddess ODDLY, IT SEEMS Joan Jett has quite a good reputation. The inspiring Bad Reputation, named after her early 1980s hit, is a paean to the veteran rocker. She gets praise from Iggy Pop and Blondie’s Deborah Harry; we learn of her good influence on artists as different as Miley Cyrus, Darby Crash, Laura Jane Grace and actor Michael J. Fox. We note her days as a hard-charging musician, as a stand-up person who travelled to Iraq and Bosnia to entertain the troops, and her work for animal rights. Jett’s excessive drinking in the rough times after her first band, The Runaways, broke up Bad Reputation are about the only character deficits admitted to here. Gifted with a Silvertone guitar by her parents at UR, 90 Mins. Christmas, the smoldering Jett parlayed that into L.A.’s Sep 26, Century 20 glam rock scene, mostly at a small L.A. disco run in the Oakridge mid 1970s by Mountain View-bred Rodney Bingenheimer. Kim Fowley—who has a mixed reputation, either as pervy mastermind or astute, if eccentric, music producer—pre-fabbed the underaged band The Runaways during a time of ’70s gender blur. “Guys are turning into fags so the girls are turning into John Wayne,” Fowley says. When The Runaways began, the macha Jett wasn’t even the lead singer. The feedback changed as their market widened. As Jett puts it: “It went from ‘cute and sweet’ to ‘slut and whore.’” Media described the underage performers as we see in a trade paper headline: “Lissom Lolitas.” Director Kevin Kerslake’s efforts to underscore Jett as a groundbreaker means downplaying the rock chops of some of her contemporaries, such as Joni Mitchell (she wasn’t all just “Big Yellow Taxi”). While the testimonials for Jett abound, particularly from Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill, we don’t get very deep into her inner life. It’s a warm film, though. For decades, Jett’s back has been guarded by the Laguna family: daughter Carianne Brinkman, wife Meryl and Kenny Laguna, a vet of the bubble gum music craze of the late 1960s. Kenny’s main lesson on songwriting comes from Casablanca records founder Neil Bogart: “Don’t bore us, get right to the chorus.” It’s pleasant to see the easiness between Kenny Laguna and Jett, sharing a spliff, or grousing together about stage costumes as Joan takes some electrical tape to a black spandex outfit in danger of a seam-split. And the documentary is full of savory odds and ends, including the sight of Jett absolutely rocking “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and the story of how 23 record companies turned down Jett’s demo. They didn’t get “I Love Rock and Roll.” Perhaps it was too deep? —Richard von Busack

PINK PRODUCER Aaron Velasquez constructs sample-based beats with modern and retro appeal under the moniker Flamingosis.
Nostalgic Now Flamingosis’ new LP, ‘Flight Fantastic,’ puts a modern spin on retro soul BY YOUSIF KASSAB
F
EW THINGS STRIKE a chord like being confronted with something that is at once vaguely familiar and undeniably new. When executed well, this potent combination has the power to evoke a sense of powerful nostalgia while simultaneously conjuring a sense of rejuvenation. It’s within this emotional lexicon that beatmakers like Madlib, Knxwledge and the New Jersey-based producer Aaron Velasquez operate.
Creating under the moniker Flamingosis, Velasquez cobbles together each composition from a mix of freshly sequenced drum tracks and whatever sun-bleached soul sample might be stuck in his head that day. “To be honest, a lot of times it’s just stumbling upon really cool music randomly on YouTube or in record stores,” Velasquez says of his creative process. “Sometimes it’s the drums that come first, but usually I hear something that catches my ear, and its easier to build everything around that.” Halfway through last July’s Flight Fantastic, Velasquez’s latest Bandcamponly release as Flamingosis, this process becomes clear. Album highlight “Cruise Control” opens with the sound of a
warm keyboard melody lifted from The Futures’ “Ain’t No Time Fa Nothing.” Here Velasquez chops up the composition, laying down a hip-hop beat and putting the punchiest elements front and center. He highlights a few key guitar squiggles, pumps up the strings and deploys a single, skronking saxophone note as a lively exclamation point. The original’s slow-burning hook is repurposed and pitch shifted until the song’s final minute when the bridge re-emerges to take its place. The LP’s title track sounds like it’s being picked up from some interstellar radio frequency as it gradually fades in behind an acid synth sound collage. Once you’re tuned in, though, the song wastes no time dropping into a propulsive staccato rhythm of boombap kicks and snares paired with the occasional trap high-hat roll. Near the song’s half-minute mark, a washed-out electric guitar glistens, panning in stereo delay as it swirls around a rapid-fire, ping-ponging slap bass run that recalls the furious fingerwork of Thundercat. The brief sequence feels a bit like Discovery-era Daft Punk. By itself the song is a perfect example
of what makes the whole album work. Each of Velasquez’s compositions is a cache of mined musical ideas being slowly drip-fed to the listener. Where many beat makers might let a loop run through an entire song, the relentless variation here keeps anything from wearing out its welcome. Velasquez says that’s something he learned while working on his own. “If you just have a nice loop the whole time, it can get repetitive,” he says. "Sometimes it ends up being easier to work with a vocalist rather than just working on your own because when you’re just working with a sample you have to really go through and pick out which parts will make the whole piece interesting.” That’s not to say Velasquez is shy about collaborating. Some of the producer’s best work has served as a backdrop for frequent collaborator and fellow New Jersey denizen Ehiorobo. From songs like last year’s “Stowed Away” it’s easy to see how the two bring the best out in each other. “When I work with him, sometimes I feel more comfortable just finding a really nice loop and letting him fill up the rest of the space,” Velasquez says. He’s also been working with future funk luminary Yung Bae for going on three years now. Their newest collaboration, a quick loosie titled “Cookout on Cloud 9” follows the “lo-fi hip-hop to chill to” trend that’s emerged on Youtube over the past couple years. “I came up with the drums, and then we came together and just reformatted the whole song,” he says. “We tried to form a groove that locked in with the sample really well.” They succeeded. A singular flute sample worms its way throughout the two-minute track anchored to a series of deftly placed booms and baps. In the YouTube clip, a GIF of Sailor Moon protagonist Usagi Tsukino drinking a green beverage loops continuously on the screen. Vaporwave this is not, but it’s clear the 2012 movement had its effect on Velasquez. Even the album art for Flight Fantastic, with it’s ’80s fonts and picturesque pastel landscape, seems like a small callback.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): "The flower doesn't
dream of the bee. It blossoms and the bee comes." So says poet and philosopher Mark Nepo in The Book of Awakening. Now I'm transmitting his observation to you. I hope it will motivate you to expend less energy fantasizing about what you want and devote more energy to becoming the beautiful, useful, irresistible presence that will attract what you want. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to make plans to produce very specific blossoms.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Budi Waseso, the former head of the Indonesian government's antinarcotics division, had a radical plan to prevent escapes by people convicted of drug-related crimes. He sought to build detention centers that would be surrounded by moats filled with crocodiles and piranhas. But his replacement, Heru Winarko, has a different approach. He wants addicts and dealers to receive counseling in comfortable rehabilitation centers. I hope that in the coming weeks, as you deal with weaknesses, flaws and sins—both your own and others'—you'll opt for an approach more like Winarko's than Waseso's. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In one sense, a "patron saint" is a Catholic saint who is a heavenly advocate for a person, group, activity, thing or place. St. Jude is the patron saint of lost causes, for instance. St. Francis of Assisi is the guardian of animal welfare, and St. Kentigern is the protector against verbal abusers. "Patron saint" may also be invoked poetically to refer to a person who serves as a special guide or influence. For example, in one of his short stories, Nathaniel Hawthorne refers to a veteran nurse as "the patron saint of young physicians." In accordance with current astrological omens, I invite you to fantasize about persons, groups, activities, things or places for whom you might be the patron saint. To spur your imagination, here are some appropriate possibilities. You could be the patron saint of the breeze at dawn; of freshly picked figs; of singing humorous love songs in the sunlight; of unpredictable romantic adventures; of life-changing epiphanies while hiking in nature; of soul-stirring music. CANCER (June 21-July 22): In August 1933, author
Virginia Woolf wrote a critical note to her friend, the composer Ethel Smyth, lamenting her lack of emotional subtlety. "For you," Woolf told Smyth, "either things are black or they're white—either they're sobs or shouts—whereas I always glide from semitone to semitone." In the coming weeks, fellow Cancerian, you may encounter people who act like Smyth. But it will be your sacred duty, both to yourself and to life, to remain loyal and faithful to the rich complexity of your feelings.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): "People think of education as
something they can finish," said writer and scientist Isaac Asimov, who wrote or edited over 500 books. His point was that we're wise to be excited about learning new lessons as long as we're on this earth. To cultivate maximum vitality, we should always be engaged in the processes of absorbing new knowledge and mastering new skills and deepening our understanding. Does that sound appealing to you, Leo? I hope so, especially in the coming weeks, when you will have an enhanced ability to see the big picture of your future needs for education.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo businessman Warren
Buffet is among the top five wealthiest people on the planet. In an average year, his company Berkshire Hathaway adds $36 billion to its already swollen coffers. But in 2017, thanks to the revision of the U.S. tax code by President Trump and his buddies, Buffet earned $65 billion—an increase of 83 percent over his usual haul. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you're entering a year-long phase when your financial chances could have a mild resemblance to Buffet's 2017. I'm not predicting your earnings will increase by 83 percent, but 15 percent isn't unreasonable. So start planning how you'll do it.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): As he stepped up to use an ATM in a supermarket, a Scottish man named Colin Banks found £30 (about $40 U.S.) that the person who used the machine before him had inadvertently neglected to take. But rather than pocketing it, Banks turned it in to a staff member, and eventually the

cash was reunited with its proper owner. Shortly after performing his good deed, Bank won £50,000 (about $64,500 U.S.) in a game of chance. It was instant karma in dramatic action—the positive kind! My analysis of the astrological omens reveals that you're more likely than usual to benefit from expeditious cosmic justice like that. That's why I suggest you intensify your commitment to doing good deeds.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): As you dive down into your soul's depths in quest for renewal, remember this testimony from poet Scherezade Siobhan: "I want to dig out what is ancient in me, the mistaken-formonster . . . and let it teach me how to be unafraid again." Are you brave and brazen enough to do that yourself? It's an excellent time to douse your fear by drawing wild power from the primal sources of your life. To earn the right to soar through the heights in November and December, delve as deep as you can in the coming weeks. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): According to
author Elizabeth Gilbert, here's "the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?" When I read that thought, my first response was, why are the treasures hidden? Shouldn't they be completely obvious? My second response was, why do you need courage to bring forth the treasures? Shouldn't that be the easiest and most enjoyable task imaginable? Everything you just read is a perfect riddle for you to contemplate during the next 14 months, Sagittarius.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A blogger named
Sage Grace offers her readers a list of "cool things to call me besides cute." They include dazzling, alluring, sublime, magnificent and exquisite. Is it OK if I apply those same adjectives to you, Capricorn? I'd like to add a few more, as well: resplendent, delightful, intriguing, magnetic and incandescent. I hope that in response you don't flinch with humility or protest that you're not worthy of such glorification. According to my astrological analysis, now is one of those times when you deserve extra appreciation for your idiosyncratic appeal and intelligence. Tell your allies and loved ones that I said so. Inform them, too, that giving you this treatment could help mobilize one of your half-asleep potentials.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Many educated
Americans and Europeans think of reincarnation as a loony delusion, even though it's a cornerstone of spiritual belief for over 1.5 billion earthlings. I myself regard it as a hypothesis worthy of intelligent consideration, although I'd need hundreds of pages to explain my version of it. However you imagine it, Aquarius, you now have extra access to knowledge and skills and proclivities you possessed in what we might refer to as your "past lives"—especially in those past lives in which you were an explorer, maverick, outlaw or pioneer. I bet you'll feel freer and more experimental than usual during the next four weeks.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): "When the winds of change blow," says a Chinese proverb, "some people build walls while others build windmills." Since the light breezes of change may soon evolve into brisk gusts of change in your vicinity, I wanted to bring this thought to your attention. Will you be more inclined to respond by constructing walls or windmills? I don't think it would be foolish for you to favor the walls, but in the long run I suspect that windmills would serve you better. Homework: Imagine you get three wishes on one condition: They can't benefit you directly, but have to be wished on someone else's behalf. Freewillastrology.com.
