Gino would be a perfect fit for the SCCOE board because he is a lying and conniving scumbag who would require minimal grooming by the current corrupt board! Can’t we muster a little compassion for this ne’er-do-well?

Some Republicans are so wrapped in their strap of conspiracy it makes them dangerous to hold any office sanely. The writing is on the wall.

I never thought it would get to this point, but here we are. You’ve gone full MAGA and—dare I say—borderline Nazi. The signs were there. When you were discharged from the Marines, you had some white supremacist symbols branded into your skin. But then you went to therapy, learned how to keep your PTSD symptoms in check. You became kinduvva hippy for a while. You grew your hair out, you hung around a diverse group of friends. But you’ve regressed since the Talking Comb-Over moved into the White House. You didn’t wield a tiki torch on any khaki pants marches, thank god, but you have been sharing racist memes celebrating ICE. I’ve been dreading the holidays now because I don’t really know how to respond to you anymore.

SVNEWS

Someone decided to troll Santa Clara County supervisor candidate and terming-out San Jose Councilman DON ROCHA by buying a domain name similar to his campaign website’s and redirecting it to a gossipy blog about his years-old divorce. It’s unclear what’s so scandalous about the domestic matter, which the blog tries to spin as proof of Rocha’s sleaziness. It’s a low blow and reflects more on the sleaziness of the author than anyone else. But in a Sept. 27 email to supporters, Rocha lands a bit of a low blow of his own by blaming his rival for the hit piece. “As we get closer to election day … campaigns typically heat up and get tense, and some, They regrettably, even Did resort to questionable What? tactics,” he wrote. SEND TIPS TO “Our opponent has FLY@ unfortunately chosen METRONEWS. to purchase a domain COM of my name ... in order to divert voters to her own campaign website.” That didn’t sit well with the accused, San Jose Unified trustee SUSAN ELLENBERG. “I want to be very clear: Neither I nor any member of my campaign team had anything to do with this,” she replied on her public Facebook page. “I did not purchase this domain, I am not controlling it and I have never asked anyone to do it or been told by anyone that they are doing it. Whoever is doing it should stop.” Ellenberg said she was disappointed that Rocha sent out a mass email before reaching out to her directly. Rocha, for his part, agreed that he jumped the gun. “I did make an assumption,” he said, “and that was a mistake.” But the two opponents have since been working together to find out who’s behind the anonymous mudslinging. “We’ve been doing a little digging,” Rocha said, “and that was very nice of her to offer to help.”

FRIENDS LIKE THESE Depositions reveal sheriff candidate helped Morrissey keep his job, get good assignments and sue Santa Clara County.

Off Duty Sheriff candidate John Hirokawa went to bat for ex-union boss Don Morrissey BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

D

ON MORRISSEY’s career has been in free-fall since June, when he made parts of his personnel record public by suing to appeal his second demotion.

The veteran lawman resigned as president of the Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) in July after Metro exposed the extent of his role in a texting scandal involving reams of bigoted messages. Just last weekend, he gave up his badge after 19 years at the Sheriff ’s Office, and public defenders are now analyzing 16 of his 87 arrest cases for potential bias. Recently obtained information sheds new light on how extensively sheriff ’s candidate John Hirokawa has

been involved in running interference for the one-time union chief. Metro has now learned that Morrissey, who already plummeted from lieutenant to transit cop, was the subject of yet another investigation into alleged wrongdoing when he resigned from the agency last week. Sources at the Sheriff’s Office say he tried to meddle in a probe involving a deputy with suspected ties to the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang— the same investigation that unearthed the text messages that led to Morrissey losing his sergeant’s stripes in 2016. Morrissey went from being a “rising star,” to quote his attorney’s characterization in a retaliation claim against Sheriff Laurie Smith, to a liability for the county, his union, his profession—and his preferred candidate for sheriff.

During his time as head of the DSA, Morrissey positioned himself as one of Sheriff Smith’s most vocal critics. He supported her opponents in the past two elections—retired Capt. Kevin Jensen in 2014 and retired Undersheriff John Hirokawa this year—because he said he wanted to reform the troubled agency, which has grappled for years with the high-profile murder of a mentally ill inmate, a series of excessiveforce lawsuits and routine overspending. But Morrissey’s history of misconduct eventually caught up to him, compromising his role as watchdog. Politically, it also made him a thorn in the side for Hirokawa, Smith’s former second-in-command and jails chief who has tried to portray himself as a reformer despite decades as part of the same administration he’s opposing and his years-long affiliation with an arguably corrupt cop. As a candidate, Hirokawa has criticized Smith for failing to hold officers accountable, playing favorites and meting out discipline based on personal retribution. “Setting a higher standard for all officers starts from the top and permeates down through the department,” Hirokawa wrote in a July 5 press release issued after Metro’s

Hirokawa, in his own words, pitched the idea of re-assigning him to the detectives unit because he was an otherwise diligent employee. “We had options,” Hirokawa said in a deposition. “We tried to come up with, let’s just say, alternatives for him.” Hirokawa says in depositions that he was involved in meetings in which Morrissey would be given the detective reassignment. Hirokawa, by his own account, was also deeply involved in the discipline process that resulted in Morrissey’s demotion rather than termination. After Morrissey was caught redhanded, not only did Hirokawa seek a good position for the accused voyeur and hookup advertiser, he participated in softening the disciplinary actions and expressed misgivings about Sheriff Smith’s treatment of him. Hirokawa praised Morrissey as “very energetic,” “engaged,” “a good communicator” and “level headed” in his deposition, according to documents received by Metro. Despite his misconduct, Morrissey was a favorite instructor, Hirokawa said, and should be allowed to teach cadets. He also testified that Morrissey’s discipline for porn-watching may have been “disproportionate” to the documented misconduct. Hirokawa suggested he felt the same about his discipline for failing to report hate speech about “kikes,” “nig nogs” and “cunts” sent by fellow officers, too. “What if the sergeant found out that a group of deputies had used disparaging slurs about racial ethnic groups or women, would you expect a sergeant to report that to a superior officer?” Deputy County Counsel Melissa Kiniyalocts asked Hirokawa during the deposition last fall. “While they’re off duty?” Hirokawa inquired. “Yes, well, on duty and off duty.” “On duty more so than maybe off duty.” “Why?” “On duty we have on duty conduct,” Hirokawa explained. “Off duty—again, depending on the— let’s just say the stage or the context of what’s going on. Like, is this bantering? You know, it depends.” “Do you consider prolific use of the N-word bantering?” “Depends on the context,” Hirokawa answered, before clarifying that he personally doesn’t consider it bantering.

9 OCTOBER 3-9, 2018 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

reporting prompted him to publicly denounce Morrissey. “The current leadership of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office has failed to set this standard over four decades, and that is the core root of the problem. The current leadership of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office were the ones that ultimately decided what the disciplinary action would be for this texting scandal and they are the ones that should answer to their decisions.” While Hirokawa may have been unaware of the latest probe into whether Morrissey’s interfered with a criminal case, the candidate has known for years about the exdeputy’s alleged ethical lapses. Metro has obtained non-public depositions from last year that shed new light on Hirokawa’s participation in efforts to give disgraced former union president good assignments within the department after he’d been disciplined for porn surfing and trolling for Craigslist sex on the clock. Transcripts of a Sept. 18, 2017 deposition show that Hirokawa also advocated on Morrissey’s behalf in an internal affairs investigation after his participation in a texting ring involving misogynistic, racist and transphobic comments prompted a follow-up disciplinary action. Hirokawa additionally served as a supportive witness in Morrissey’s union-funded wrongful demotion lawsuit against the county. The Morrissey-led DSA later provided Hirokawa with its endorsement and $246,588—nearly double the amount the candidate raised himself—in independent expenditures, which forced Sheriff Smith into her first general election runoff since being elected to the office in 1998. Newly unearthed records affirm that Hirokawa’s defense of Morrissey predates his run for office. In 2012, when the officer was found using his work computer for porn and sex ads and was accused of lying after he falsely claimed it was part of a prostitution investigation. According to department documents, Morrissey was also accused of pressuring subordinates help him cover-up his activities. Smith initially wanted Morrissey fired for the on-the-clock erotic escapades. When that failed, she sought to remove him as an instructor in the academy that trains incoming deputies, concerned that he might corrupt the new recruits. Rather than fire him as an instructor,

Affordable Housing BY THE NUMBERS

Last year, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo unveiled an ambitious plan to build 10,000 new belowmarket-rate and another 15,000 market-rate homes by 2022. By this end of the 2017-18 fiscal year, however, just 64 below-market-rate units had been constructed, according to a new report by the city’s housing department.

594 WHISTLEBLOWER Dr. Jan Weber says the county wrongfully fired him after he filed numerous complaints about workplace safety and substandard patient care.

Valley Med Psychiatrist Wins $1.5 Million Settlement BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH A psychiatrist who lost his job at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center won a $1.5 million settlement last week. Jan Weber—a 49-year-old Menlo Park resident who led the public hospital’s child and adolescent psychiatry division for five years—made numerous complaints about substandard patient care and unsafe work conditions before Santa Clara County fired him in 2014. A jury sided with Weber after a threeweek trial that featured testimonies from Valley Med’s lead psychiatrist, Michael Meade, and County Executive Jeff Smith, according to the plaintiff’s attorneys at Bohm Law Group. The total verdict includes $552,800 in compensation for Weber’s past and future economic loss and $1 million for past and future emotional distress. According to the lawsuit, Weber began sounding the alarm about unsafe and substandard patient care in fall of 2009. Years before the county began reforming its correctional

system in response to the 2015 murder of mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree by three deputies, Weber said he alerted them to problems with psychiatric care at the jails. Mentally ill inmates were being discharged with no plan for follow-up treatment, Weber said, leading to higher rates of relapse and recidivism. Weber also warned county officials that being assigned to a juvenile detention facility only one day every other week was not enough, as federal law requires more frequent monitoring for youth on antidepressant medication. His supervising physician at the time, Tiffany Ho, allegedly retaliated by cutting his time in the facility by half and posting him to nine different clinical sites in the next year-and-a-half. When Weber questioned Ho’s decision, she allegedly berated him and accused him of being “difficult,” “not a team player,” and a “troublemaker.” After Weber filed a whistleblower

complaint, he was reassigned to report to Meade. During four days of testimony, Meade, a 30-year Valley Med veteran and Weber’s direct supervisor, spoke highly of the plaintiff and acknowledged that his productivity may have waned because the county refused to grant his requests for more clinical time. Meade also told the court that Weber’s was the first termination of a psychiatrist in his department where he had no say in the decision. Were it up to him, the doctor added, he would have kept Weber on staff. Smith, however, argued that Meade wasn’t actually Weber’s supervisor and that the county has the right to fire physicians without warning because they’re at-will employees. BEAUTIFUL PROBLEMS Ariel (Stacy Fairley, left) and Sanam (Nandini Ravindran) disagree on who’s killing the bees in ‘Queen.’

Hive Mind Local theater company EnActe Arts seeks feminine inspiration BY GARY SINGH

T

HE VOICES OF strong women artists and scientists filled the De Anza Visual and Performing Arts Center last weekend, with the word “Queen” taking on multiple meanings.

EnActe Arts, a local theater production company that produces plays touching on the South Asian diaspora but with universal appeal, presented Madhuri Shekar’s masterfully scripted play, Queen, in which the ethical dilemmas of corporate-funded scientific

research go head to head with environmental activism. In the play, two female scientists at UC Santa Cruz, Sanam and Ariel, explore the degree to which corporate pesticides are destroying the bee population. Colony Collapse Disorder is a real-life systemic problem, bees are dying everywhere and governments don’t know what to do. Sanam and Ariel are days away from publishing an explosive paper about the results of their research, but the experiment model they wrote and the data they spent years collecting does not seem to prove as much as they intended. A dramatic

last-minute crisis ensues, pitting the two scientists against each other. Sanam is a talented scientist, steadfast in her integrity and sticking to ethical principles. Ariel, on the other hand, lets her emotions and subjectivity take over. At first she doesn’t realize her own bias and lets her anti-corporate activism cloud her research. She knows Monsanto is to blame, yet the data doesn’t quite go far enough to prove this. The two women are thus forced to grapple with serious issues. What does one do when awakened to the nature of her own biases? How does one handle it when a close friend and collaborator disagrees with the fundamental nature of her work? Do you stay true to your ethical scientific principles, or do you continue to fight for what’s right, knowing that the planet is deteriorating and something needs to be done now and not later? The play unfolds around a dichotomy of objectivity/subjectivity, cheating vs. ethics, bias vs. legitimacy, and the problems of corporate-funded research. “I could not think of a story that has more universal appeal,” said

EnActe Arts executive director Vinita Belani, who used to be a scientist herself. “This is also the year that our entire season is focused on presenting positive female role models to the community—scientists, detectives, playwrights, homemakers—who are doing incredible things. And this play is about very inspiring women dealing with very beautiful problems.” In addition to female empowerment, multiple threads of art-science collaboration weave their way through the entire experience. Nandini Ravindran, who plays Sanam, is a molecular biologist who by trade works on cell mutation. She harbors a visceral connection to the issues. “Queen” is her debut performance as a lead stage actress. Stacy Fairley, who plays Ariel, also has a degree in biology and was a practicing ER nurse for many years. She is likewise up close and personal with how science helps solve the world’s problems. Both actresses nailed their roles. The two male characters woven into the play provide additional intrigue. Arvind is the spoon-fed Wall Street stockbroker who parrots all the freemarket capitalist talking points and whose grandfather is trying to arrange a marriage between him and Sanam. Dr. Philip Hayes, the advisor of Sanam and Ariel, is a heroic scientist in search of the truth, but also a struggling single dad who wonders whether or not he wasted his life. Scientists will identify with the issues firsthand, while non-scientists will become enlightened by scenarios normally kept behind the scenes. And since Queen is such a portable production, it can easily transfer to a small black box theater or any number of pedagogical scenarios. Which is why the play is already slotted for another run next June at a venue to be determined. In addition, both San Jose State and UC Santa Cruz are on board to produce their own versions. “Universities are grateful that playwrights are talking about these challenges that nobody in the outside world sees,” Belani said. “So it’s going to be an easy sell. Even though we did a traditional proscenium run, the play was not designed specifically for this purpose. The play was designed to travel in a suitcase and be done in any space for people interested in the confluence of science, technology, ethics and women’s issues to start discussions.”

FATHER & SON Pat and Jerry Brown were very different leaders when the younger first took office as Governor of California. However, during his second tenure, Jerry found a happy medium between iconoclast and prudent politician.

The Golden

Browns An illuminating new book traces the history of modern California through its most famous political dynasty BY WALLACE BAINE

O

N ITS FACE, California’s Brown family political dynasty is the story of two men, but metaphorically it’s really the story of three. In the dialectical tale of the Browns, the thesis is Pat Brown, the buoyant old-school liberal who served as California’s governor in a time of expansion and optimism. Antithesis would be Brown’s brainy, aloof and austere son Jerry, who moved in to the governor’s office at the insufferable age of 36 with rock star Linda Ronstadt by his side, in a time of cynicism and retrenchment. Then, in 2010, came synthesis, with the unlikely election of an older but wiser Jerry Brown, still the intellectually restless ex-Jesuit seminarian who, at the same time,

had internalized much of the practicality and human touch that shaped his father’s career. In a couple of months, Jerry Brown, at 80, is poised to step aside as California’s governor for the second time. As a narrative of political redemption, the Browns’ story is satisfying because it’s surprising. Back in 1983, when Jerry Brown’s first two-term stint as governor ended— brought low by Proposition 13, the Mediterranean fruit fly and his own reckless presidential ambitions—he was soundly defeated in a race for the U.S. Senate by Pete Wilson. At that point, it looked like California’s relationship with the Browns was over. If any Brown was going to achieve statewide office again in California, it would be Jerry’s kid sister Kathleen. (A decade later, Kathleen Brown came up short in

her run for governor, also defeated by Brown-killer Wilson). Today, at least to California’s majority Democrats, nothing seems more natural than Jerry Brown in Sacramento. (To get a sense of just how inevitable Brown is in California’s modern political imagination, ask yourself this question: Who did he defeat for governor in his most recent election, just four years ago? Unless you’re particularly Sacramento-savvy, you probably have no idea. Answer: Somebody named Neel Kashkari.) Now, though, it’s almost a certainty that the Brown era is coming to an end in California. Jerry is both the only son in the family and childless, so at least the family name has reached the end of the line.

THE BROWNS

15

IN CAMELOT Pat Brown meets with President John F. Kennedy.

FAMILY HISTORY It is then an ideal time for the intimately familiar story to be told in wide-angle grandeur. Journalist Miriam Pawel has risen to the occasion with her new book The Browns of California: The Family Dynasty That Transformed a State and Shaped a Nation (Bloomsbury). Whether you’re a Brown admirer or otherwise, this epic tale belongs on any Californiana-heavy bookshelf, next to Kevin Starr and Carey McWilliams. Conveniently, the story of the Brown family almost exactly parallels the U.S. history of California. The family’s patriarch, German immigrant August Schuckman, arrived in California just a couple of years after statehood in the midst of the Gold Rush. “I wanted to write a book that was a history of California as much as it was a biography, something that I thought would explain some of the unique and significant things about California,” Pawel says. “The (Brown) family was a good vehicle to do that. I like to write history through people, and so this seemed to be a conjunction between an interesting and unusual family and an interesting and unusual state, and the impact and interplay that each one had on the other.”

Pawel, a Los Angeles Times reporter and native New Yorker who first moved to California in 2000, fills in the colors of the Brown family with plenty of compelling secondary characters, chief among them Pat Brown’s freethinking mother and self-described “mountain woman,” Ida Schuckman Brown, who died at 96 the same year her grandson Jerry was first elected governor. Ida Brown, in fact, is given much credit for establishing the Brown family’s progressive political instincts. After World War II, she supported left-leaning former vice president Henry Wallace over incumbent Harry Truman, and during the Vietnam War, she suggested that President Lyndon B. Johnson should be chloroformed. But mostly, Browns is a story of a father-and-son pair who provide an almost archetypal generational contrast, familiar to many who came of age in post-war America. Pat and Jerry Brown—that is, Edmund G. Brown Sr. and Jr.—were largely simpatico in political values. But in political styles, they could not have been more different.

CALIFORNIA LOVE Pat Brown was an engaging, exuberant, extroverted Hubert

Jerry Brown’s mission was to attack the status quo in the most theatrical ways considering his profound influence on the growth of California. “It’s true that he’s been somewhat overlooked,” she says. “Part of that is the East Coast vision of California that he was a victim of, in some ways. There is one good biography of Pat Brown, and that’s it. And for someone who had such a major impact on the built environment of California—the water, the roads, the universities and the schools—it’s surprising there hasn’t been more exploration of his impact on the state.” He was what is today an extinct American political species: the cando liberal who dreamed big, then delivered. Along with educator Clark Kerr, the first Governor Brown championed an ambitious master plan that turned the University of California system into the “model for modern research universities across the country,” with a commitment keep the tuition free for all Californians. Pat Brown also took on perhaps the state’s most intractable problem with

one of its most ambitious solutions. Though the population of California was mostly in the south, the state’s water was mostly in the north. Early on, Brown declared a satisfactory solution to the water problem as “a key to my entire administration.” The result was the massive California State Water Project, featuring the giant aqueduct, now named for Pat Brown, that runs along the spine of California’s Central Valley. In Pawel’s account, Pat Brown’s enthusiasms for governing California were charmingly sentimental. Brown was especially attentive to the moment when California surpassed New York as the nation’s most populous state. A billboard tallying the numbers was installed near the Bay Bridge, and when the moment finally came at the end of 1962, Gov. Brown declared a four-day celebration. (In an era of clogged freeways and outrageous housing prices, celebrating such a thing today is inconceivable for anyone but real estate speculators). Pat Brown also comes across as a proto-environmentalist who could not stay away from Yosemite and who said that his favorite spot in California was a High Sierra camp called Glen Aulin. Brown was defeated for a third term by revanchist Republican Ronald Reagan. After eight years of Reagan in Sacramento, turned off by the corruption of California favoriteson Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal, California turned again to an Edmund G. Brown, this time the son.

GOV. MOONBEAM In contrast to his father, Jerry Brown— at least in his first term as governor, from 1975-83—was more a reflection of the Vietnam-Watergate generation: arrogant, intellectually voracious, almost puritanical in his disdain for mainstream politics, the brooding iconoclast who simultaneously hated displays of wealth and loved hanging out with rock stars. Though it was never overt, young Jerry was a walking rebuke of his father’s entire orientation to the world. Jerry Brown’s mission was to attack the status quo, and he often did so in the most theatrical 18

Humphrey-style liberal whose love of California was visceral and immediate. Pawel shares Pat’s enthusiasm for flying low in a propeller plane and gazing lovingly at the California landscape, and his habit of stopping in roadside restaurants to gladhand potential voters. His upbeat personality reflected a kind of post-war optimism that guided him in initiating ambitious and legacybuilding projects, particularly in the realms of higher education and water. Paradoxically, for a man considered the patriarch of a California dynasty, Pawel believes that Pat Brown has often been forgotten, especially

THE BROWNS

17

BOOK OF BROWN Miriam Pawel’s book, ‘The Browns of California,’ tells the story of both Pat and Jerry Brown—and the impact they had on the Golden State. ways imaginable. He canceled the inaugural ball, flew commercial, rented a small apartment while turning his back on the Reagans’ governor’s residence, and chose to drive a blue Plymouth instead of ride in the governor’s Cadillac limo. His staff, often called “the Brownies,” were a collection of friends and acquaintances, many of whom had no experience in politics. He had no chief of staff or other gatekeeper, and he often conducted the state’s business during hours only a vampire would love. Jerry’s style resonated in a postWatergate era of limits, but it bewildered many of his constituents, not the least of which was his dad. In interviewing many of Jerry Brown’s friends, Pawel says that many of them told her that “Pat never quite got Jerry. He was off dating Linda Ronstadt and sleeping on a bed on the floor and canceling the inaugural and all that. A lot of people thought it was for show. At the time, it happened to be good politics, but it also was a reflection of who he was. But I think his father was hurt by not being relied on, or let in more as an adviser. In fact, the worst thing you could do if you wanted to lobby Jerry Brown was to have his father

intercede on your behalf.” In writing her book, Pawel scored four separate interviews with Jerry Brown, from 2015 to ’17. She has appeared with the governor at public events as well, including a recent Q&A at the City University of New York. “He’s very funny,” she says. “He has a good dry sense of humor. He talks in nonlinear ways; that was very useful and interesting for my purposes because I wanted to understand better how his mind worked. Also, he was unusual for politicians, he was very noncontrolling. I went off and did whatever I did, and if people asked him whether they should talk to me, he said, fine.”

BACK TO BROWN The last third of The Browns of California retraces Jerry Brown’s time in the political wilderness— the doomed 1992 presidential campaign, the stint at the head of the California Democratic Party, a gig as a talk-radio host. Pat Brown died in 1996 and the next year, Jerry announced his candidacy to be mayor of Oakland. In ’99, he took office in Oakland and experienced a political reawakening. Ironically, he found himself fighting laws

19 However much Jerry Brown presents a picture of engaged leadership (if you’re a Democrat) or persistent obstruction (if you’re a Republican), the fact is that in a few months, he’ll be just a retiree on the ranch in Williams. In an era when Democrats are scrambling to find leadership to challenge Trump in 2020, Brown has finally fashioned a political career that defies easy labels, pursued bipartisanship (he’s credited former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a kind of pioneer in California’s climate-change approach) and forged ahead with a new approach that Pawel calls “the party of California,” an idea borrowed from California’s political mahatma, the late writer and historian Kevin Starr. But time has run out for Jerry Brown and the Brown family dynasty. Brown has mastered the art of politics just when it’s time to leave the stage. “On the other hand,” Pawel says, “he’s still the same person, the same intellect, the same spirit, with the same willingness to challenge authority. How many people get a chance to go back and fix the things they screwed up the first time around? It’s a pretty odd situation.”

that he had created as governor. He vowed to bring 10,000 people to downtown Oakland. He got involved in potholes and karaoke permits. He was a common sight on the streets with his dog Dharma. The move from philosopher king of Sacramento to pragmatic mayor of Oakland invigorated him. The other x-factor that transformed Brown was Anne Gust, the retail executive who became his wife in 2005. Gust provided a counterbalance to his harsher political instincts. Both Oakland and Anne, rounded off Brown’s rougher edges, according to Pawel, made him more of a practical and effective politician. In a remarkable turn of events to which we’ve all been witness, Jerry Brown then got a second bite at the apple, becoming governor again in 2010. (Since Brown served as governor before the term limits law was passed in 1990, he was eligible to run again). Instantly he became a trivia question, as both the youngest California governor since the Civil War, and the oldest one ever. Brown came into office ready to wrestle with the state’s chaotic finances and take on its dysfunctional penal system. He proved to be more moderate than many of his liberal supporters had hoped, but turned around a huge state deficit— thanks in large part to Democratic supermajorities and revenue-friendly ballot measures. Pat Brown didn’t survive to see his son’s second ascent to the governor’s office, but the older Brown would have found the second Jerry Brown administration much more comprehensible than the first. The election of Donald Trump as president in 2016 marked another turning point in Jerry Brown’s career, giving him the confidence to thumb his nose at a hostile administration and act as a de facto head of state in areas such as climate change and immigration. In 2017, Brown’s approval rating as governor reached 62 percent. As a broad history of Brown’s family going back to the 19th century, Pawel’s book is centered on the family’s ancestral piece of California, the ranch known as “The Mountain House” near Williams, northwest of Sacramento.

HOPS & HOSEN Drinking with friends is fun—but drinking in lederhosen is more fun.

Fall Feasts Silicon Valley celebrates Oktoberfest with beer, food and more beer BY JOHN DYKE

T

HE ORIGINAL Oktoberfest, held in 1810, was meant to be a one-time affair, a celebration of the marriage of Prince (later King) Ludwig I to Princess Theresa of SaxeHildburghausen. The citizens (a.k.a. burghers) of Munich celebrated for five full days in front of the city gates and indulged in drink, food, parades and music. Such a good time was had by all that they’ve been holding the fête every year since, excluding years of war a few cholera epidemics here and there—but let’s not go there.

Germany’s official Oktoberfest draws nearly 8 million visitors every year. Together these revelers consume a half-million chickens, a quarter-million pair of sausages— and a whopping 1,822,787 gallons of beer. More than a half-mile of water closets are set up to help, ahem, alleviate the crowds. There are even flushing sink-like stations designed to allow the overindulgent to expel the contents of their stomachs face first. While the 16-day festival was traditionally held exclusively in the month of October, it was moved up to the end of September to take advantage of the nicer weather; the official event now concludes on the

first Sunday of October. However, us lucky Bay Area residents needn’t worry about this “bad weather” phenomenon, so we aim for a more traditional approach to this Munich classic and have Oktoberfest festivities from late September until the end of October because, well, beer. Duh… Here is a short list of local establishments and celebrations that will put the lieder in one’s hosen, fill the air with oom-pah music and keep cups full of the golden nectar of the gods.

On the other hand, admission to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass—which gives you more than 80 top-flight acts in Americana, country, rock, bluegrass and blues in San Francisco’s gorgeous Golden Gate Park—is FREE! Thanks to an endowment from the late private-equity investor (and music lover) Warren Hellman, nobody needs a ticket to see some great live music, which this year includes Emmylou Harris, Jeff Tweedy, Graham Nash, Mavis Staples, Nick Lowe and a battalion of other magnificent musicians. ROB LOWE Sat, 8pm, $38+ Center for the Performing Arts, 225 Almaden Blvd., San Jose Rob Lowe has been part of the Hollywood furniture for so long now—it’s been close to 40 years since he started making hearts flitter as a teen actor—that he’s been criminally easy to overlook as a bonafide star. The absurdly good-looking veteran actor survived a sex scandal that sank his movie career in the ’80s and then went on to score major TV gravitas on The West Wing and even show off his comic chops on Parks and Recreation. Now, Lowe’s on stage with “Stories I Only Tell My Friends,” which details his wild ride through the Hollywood meat grinder in a show based on his best-selling memoir. (WB)

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Sat, 3pm, $15 Trianon Theater, San Jose

Sat, 10am, Free Martial Cottle Park, San Jose

Opera Cultura is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with Canto: New Voices, a concert featuring the winner from the national Canto Online Vocal Competition, Virginia Hesse. Hailing from Texas and boasting an impressive list of notable stage credits, Hesse, a coloratura soprano, will perform along with another finalist in the competition, Michael Orlinsky, a tenor-baritone and composer. The event aims to highlight “the experience of Latino Americans through the beauty of music,” bring exposure to rising Latino artists and help raise money for Opera Cultura’s 2018-2019 season. The concert will be followed by a reception. (CK)

Now that it is officially autumn in the Valley of Heart’s Delight, it’s time to take the family out in search of pumpkin patches and other reminders of what the season’s changes mean beyond city streets. The fourth annual Harvest Festival at Martial Cottle Park is a fine option, with farm tours and wagon rides, square dancing and face painting. Learn to compost. Pet a goat. Carve that pumpkin. At least get out of the house, walk past a vintage tractor and grab a bite to eat from a food truck or farm stand while listening to live music and smelling the fresh fall air. (JC)

DAKHABRAKHA Tue, 7pm $21.50+ The Ritz, 400 S. First St., San Jose If you’re suffering a bit from seenit-all ennui on the live music front, we just might have the antidote. The sounds of Ukrainian quartet DakhaBrakha are likely novel to most Western ears. Starting from a foundation of Ukrainian folk music, the one-man, three-woman group throws in all kinds of musical textures from cello to jaw harp to Brazilian percussion to something akin to rap. The women in the group are fond of giant black lamb’s-wool hats, which gives them a kind of Baltic B-52s vibe, and the group’s avant-garde sense of theater will eventually wear down your defenses, until they make Bjork sound like Taylor Swift in comparison. SEXED-UP VIOLENCE Rob August channels ‘The Punisher’ in his portrayal of Mad Padraic in SJ Stage’s production of ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore.’

‘Lieutenant’ Lite SJ Stage scrubs some of the heft from Martin McDonagh’s black comedy BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

J

OSHUA MARX DIRECTS Martin McDonagh’s play The Lieutenant of Inishmore with verve and efficiency. In this black comedy about a rogue INLA (Irish National Liberation Army) agent set on a path of revenge and destruction, the production emphasizes comedy even when the comic asides land in Grand Guignol territory. The pacing is light on its feet. Marx wrangles passable Irish accents

from almost every member of the cast. And the actors commit to the psychic and physical geography of rural Ireland. As an ensemble, they’re all on the same page. The production answers every question McDonagh poses on the page except the most important one: “Why?” A black comedy divorced from blackness lacks any lasting emotional impact. In this case, the actors have been directed to amuse themselves and the audience, and they do, but by the end of the play it’s not at all clear why the characters are behaving the way they are. As the season's opening show,

The Lieutenant comes across as the most literal interpretation of that idea. Imagine an Irish version of the DC Comics anti-hero, The Punisher, and you’ll recognize Mad Padraic (Rob August). His sexually fetishized costume straps August’s pumped-up body into the tightest of tank tops and pair of black denim jeans. The leather straps that crisscross his chest connect to holsters containing guns, knives, ropes and god only knows what else. McDonagh introduces the character while he’s holding someone captive. August carries a scarred, shirtless, semi-conscious James (Andy Cooperfauss) onto the stage, where he proceeds to hang his prisoner upside down on a mechanical chain. Torture is part of Padraic’s everyday office routine. Just as he’s about to slice off one of James’s nipples (he’s already ripped two of his toenails), Padraic’s father Donny (Randall King) calls. While Padraic has been scouting the country in search of human targets to cauterize, Donny’s been looking after his son’s black cat, Tommy.

But well before James’s nipples are threatened with detachment, the play begins with Davey’s (Trevor March) arrival, Donny’s long-haired, bicycle-riding neighbor. On his way home, Davey stops to pick up a dead cat he sees in the middle of the street. Thinking it’s Tommy, he delivers it to Donny. It’s a small, wellintentioned gesture that paves the road ahead, and the rest of the plot, directly to hell. The problem with playing menace for laughs is that it undermines the unhinged psychology that leads to the violence. The actors haven’t been instructed to imply much of anything between the ironic line readings. Instead of the audience being truly fearful of Padraic’s unpredictable behavior and that of the three INLA hitmen who are trailing him, the play can then devolve into a live-action video game. Cats’ heads can turn to mush. Chests can spatter blood across the wall. But the consequences don't suggest anything real. They’re just temporary and theatrical. When Harold Pinter included two gangsterlike figures in his play The Birthday Party, they didn’t need guns. They threaten the other characters with language, and to devastating effect. Since The Lieutenant of Inishmore was first staged in 2001, McDonagh has expanded his approach to and commentary on manmade violence. In his most recent film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Frances McDormand plays Mildred Hayes, a woman whose daughter was murdered. Hayes’ maternal rage and guilt prompt her vitriolic response to the police department’s inability to find the killer. Mildred Hayes has been driven mad by grief, but the writer provides a recognizable context, if not always a justifiable one, for her actions. In comparison, this production of The Lieutenant waters down our experience of the violence. It’s good for a chuckle or two but then quickly loses meaning as soon as the cast lines up for the curtain call. THRU OCT

EXHIBIT

part of a new Pace exhibit featuring native works paired with the paintings of Agnes Martin.

Back To Basics AS THE TITLE of the current Pace Gallery exhibit suggests, "Agnes Martin/ Navajo Blankets" pairs Navajo blankets with Martin’s spare canvases. The blankets date back to the 19th century and are still intact and vibrant. One example identifies No. 6 as a “First Phase Chief’s Blanket” (c. 1800-1830). No. 6 is lined with brown and white (now aged to the color of cream) stripes alternating with occasional thin indigo lines. This first phase of Navajo weaving didn’t incorporate patterns. At a glance, it looks like an uncomplicated design. But you could come to the same conclusion about Martin’s acrylic and graphite canvas Blessings (2000). Pale blue stripes alternate with white ones until they meet in the middle, where one slim line of reddish pink meets and pauses to rest against a blue one. The design could be described as simple. And yet, like Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt, her cohorts in the school of abstract expressionism, Martin’s (1912–2004) work has a mesmerizing effect. You sink inside the colors, wondering Agnes Martin / Navajo Blankets why she chose and arranged them the way she has. You contemplate that reddish-pink line until it answers the Thru Oct 28, Free question you imagine the artist is posing. Pace Gallery, Juxtaposing the blankets with her canvases doesn’t look or Palo Alto feel like a gimmick. The first thought that comes to mind is, pacegallery.com why do we regularly privilege Western art over the work of indigenous peoples? Upon close inspection, these seemingly dissimilar cultural artifacts, made a century apart from each other, blur the lines between high art and something as utilitarian as a blanket. "Agnes Martin/Navajo Blankets" alerts viewers to the fact that anyone can derive as much meaning from Martin’s art as they can from the Navajo patterns. And despite the similar approaches— the way in which they both applied minimal and muted colors to their “canvases”—the Pace Gallery also maintains that Martin wasn’t appropriating the Navajo culture. Pace writes, “While Martin took no direct inspiration from the aesthetics of Navajo weaving in her approach to painting, she spent much of her life in New Mexico, and the region’s cultural history and artistic production suffused her experience.” This statement presents a conundrum. If she spent much of her artistic career in the Southwest, specifically in Taos, how could that same Navajo region suffuse her experience there without directly inspiring her? Regardless, this smart exhibit has knowingly created a symbiotic relationship. Martin’s chilly work warms up next to the blankets, while the Navajo designs stand as elegant parallels to her sense of clarity and purpose. — Jeffrey Edalatpour

STAR CROSSED Bradley Cooper makes another remake of ‘A Star is Born’ with a little help from Lady Gaga.

Star Wars

Lady Gaga rises, Bradley Cooper descends in ‘A Star is Born’ reboot BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

H

OW OVER THE moon you are about A Star is Born depends on how gaga you are about Lady Gaga. The likely winner of the next Best Actress Oscar isn’t at all bad. She acquits herself. We can believe Gaga as a nobody: “My nose is too big,” Gaga’s character Ally says, parroting the music executives who stalemated her career. Despite her interesting, complicated mouth and the large hazel eyes, it’s easy enough to suspect she’s been dismissed as sings-10, looks-3.

And star, singer, co-writer and novice director Bradley Cooper takes a low-key attack on this thricefilmed melodrama’s material. As the self-destructive roots rocker Jackson Maine, Cooper is generous with his own closeups. He gets decadent fast, crunching pills with his bootheel and drinking whiskey out of the bottle. After a stint in Malibu rehab, he leaps up from the swimming pool water, reborn, showing off a torso worthy of a Renaissance statue. Cooper tries, with some success, to rejuvenate the elderly material about a rising star who falls in love with an older legend. She surpasses him, even as he’s pulled down by his substance abuse.

A Star is Born begins in blackout with the ambient roar and whooping of a rock show. The camera is almost always on stage with Jackson and Ally, giving us their view. Yet this tale of superstars takes place in a bubble without much entourage. Honore de Balzac said that you could tell you were famous when the grocer embraces you, and here a grocery store cashier stops to take a picture of Jackson. We get a better idea of the level of Jackson’s fame than his identity as a musician: His would-be showstopper is a Townes van Zandt-style song, “The Shallows,” accompanied by Ally, whom he pushes in front of a microphone at a giant outdoor concert. (Real talents never need to rehearse.) We also have a better idea of who Jackson was rather than what he is now: Sam Elliott is Jackson’s angry off-again, on-again manager (and half brother) providing the story of the decadence of their shared past. The relatively low budget (under $40 million) must excuse the lack of background, both in the unseen faces of the fans and the confusing

geography. No matter who she’s playing, it’s hard to imagine Lady Gaga as anything but a New Yorker. This East Coast style is reinforced by her slightly shady outer-boroughs father (Andrew Dice Clay), in the livery business with his black suitclad buddies who are somewhere between the Goodfellas and the Seven Dwarves. We’re also seemingly in New York in the first meeting of Jackson and Ally at an east-side drag bar where Cooper stops by chance for a wayhome round. There, he’s dazzled by Ally posing as a drag queen, covering Piaf ’s “La Vie en Rose.” After the show, Ally warbles a capella in a supermarket parking lot, and Jackson instantly realizes her major talent. The love scenes with their halfspoken lines work better than anything in the film. The words between the lovers seem fresh and unscripted. Gaga and Cooper are attractive opposites, short and tall, gruff and femmy; the scenes of his return from rehab are very touching and tentative. But the music doesn’t stick with you, and as director Cooper seems not to have any opinion about whether the evolution of Ally’s sound is good or bad. As Ally gets big enough for Sunset Boulevard billboards, she becomes more artificial, more covered with cosmetics, more built for the giga-stage of the L.A. Forum. She’s molded by a sinister British record company exec, Rez (Rafi Gavron). As in every musical melodrama, this is the one person in the world who can make or break a singer. Ally puts up a fight for Jackson; she’s true blue to the end. Cooper credibly shows the humiliations of a hard drinker. But the same problem Pauline Kael identified in the ’76 version is back: Rather than being utterly destroyed, a star who disturbed the faux-solemnity of an awards show by a boozed-up scene would be beloved by nihilists everywhere, rather than shunned by all. This A Star Is Born is like movie night at the rehab clinic: all the shame of drunkenness and none of the elation.

KILL CUTE In ‘Hell Fest,’ amusement park patrons pay to get in and pray to get out.

Mr. Stabby CO-PRODUCED BY Palo Alto’s own Gale Anne Hurd, Hell Fest is haunted by an Embodiment of Motiveless Evil called “The Other.” We never see his face, but he’s a knife-wielder in a hoodie, wearing a mask resembling the face of an Etruscan statue mottled with bronze disease. He hunts a pair of girls who are supposedly BFFs, though they rarely connect like they’ve spent any time together. Natalie (Amy Forsyth) and Brooke (Reign Edwards) remeet after a long time. Brooke’s roommate, the purple-haired punkette Taylor (the Ellen Page-like Bex Taylor-Klaus of TV’s Arrow) invites the two to an amusement park scarefest with VIP passes. There are boyfriends. Why bother describing them? We know they’re just there to be more shredded meat for the enchilada. Honoring the knife-wielding maniac multiplex fodder of the 1980s, this mostly scare-free thriller lets you admire the hard work of the art directors and designers. Long time editor turned director Gregory Plotkin has a lot of costumes, Mario Bava lighting, and sets for a low budget, including a triple maze Hell Fest in the inner sanctum “Dead Lands” where the performers are allowed to grab visitors. R; 89 Mins. The scale is more ambitious than the scares. Composer Valleywide Bear McCreary honors the venerable horror music trads, from violin crescendo to throat singing baritones. And Hell Fest offers a bit of rich theater in the stage performance by the Barker (the very good Tony Todd of Candyman) who announces that he needs virgin blood to summon Satan. (Taylor, his victim to be, shrugs apologetically about the virgin part). Forsyth demonstrates a credible ability to show mind-roasting fear during a “the calls are coming from inside the house!” scene in a public bathroom. While I’m all too susceptible to pop ups (“The Other” hums a toneless “Pop Goes the Weasel” as he stalks) everything is more like a soothing bath than icicles down the spine. One zones out over the carnival ambience, and the half-heard chat between the girls: “I’m a stoic drunk,” Natalie boasts, as Taylor complains one attraction “smells like a hobo’s asshole.” Despite the R rating, nothing insanely ghastly occurs, and the one-by-one decimation of the cute, self-confident kids gives a safe clean feeding to the same sort of impulses that produces incels and school shooters. —Richard von Busack

MASK OFF Ozzy Osbourne has always been a man of many faces.

Ozzman Cometh Ozzy Osbourne says farewell but not goodbye on final world tour BY BILL KOPP

I

F BLACK SABBATH didn’t single-handedly invent a particular kind of heavy rock, the Birmingham, England group certainly refined it. Beginning with the band’s self-titled 1970 debut, Black Sabbath proved itself as an exemplar of a bluesy, doom-laden and melodramatic kind of proto-metal. Sabbath’s first six albums are now widely recognized as highly influential genre classics. Tony Iommi’s drop-tuned guitar, Geezer Butler’s thunderous bass and Bill Ward’s rock-steady drumming

provided a powerful and seething backdrop for Ozzy Osbourne’s tortured vocals. Eventually, though, things would start to go wrong—thanks in large part to the usual rockstar excesses— and in 1979, Osbourne was dismissed from the band he had fronted. They continued without him, enlisting a succession of vocalists in his place. But to the surprise of many, Osbourne surfaced with a new group of his own, Blizzard of Ozz. Pursuing a musical style not wholly removed from, yet not a copy of, Black Sabbath, he forged ahead with a highly successful solo career. To date he has released 11 studio albums of new material, and he’s currently on the road for what’s billed

as the “No More Tours II” tour—his 15th run of live dates since 1980. Osbourne’s first two solo albums— 1980’s Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman from 1981—are undisputed hard rock classics, thanks in no small part to the guitar pyrotechnics of Randy Rhoads. Sadly, the guitarist would die in an airplane accident, but Osbourne would continue with other top-flight musicians. His subsequent output has included some uneven albums, but even the weakest efforts feature at least one noteworthy track. Ozzy’s solo catalog includes no less than five live albums, three of which have gone platinum, but he says that as far as making music, his focus is on studio recordings. “I’m not a big fan of live albums,” he writes via email. “Live performances are not a mirror of the studio version; rather, they’re a reference to what is on the record.” He does follow a rough guide—if not quite a standard method—for making albums. “Songs have their own roles on an album,” Osbourne explains. “When I make a record, I always do a track that’s a ballad, which might end up being performed on stage. There’s [also] an epic track

that is not intended for stage and a rock track that is [specifically] written to be performed on stage.” Looking back upon his body of work post-Sabbath, Osbourne stands behind everything he has done, even the records that didn’t fare well with critics. “Each of the songs is a snapshot from that time period,” he says. “I always try and make the next song better than the last.” As he embarks on this tour, Osbourne makes it clear that he’s not finished with music or performing. “This is not a farewell tour,” he emphasizes. “This is my farewell world tour, which actually means that I will be slowing down, but won’t stop performing.” And he hasn’t ruled out making another album (his last studio release was 2010’s Scream). “I would like to do another album if it can be worked out,” he says. “I have a few songs ready to record.” What he has ruled out is anything to do with his old band. Osbourne, Butler and Iommi released a highly regarded reunion album, 13, in 2013, and followed it up with an extensive tour. “As far as I’m concerned, that book is closed,” Osbourne says. Osbourne’s antics onstage and off have been the subject of endless tabloid fodder; there’s the possibly apocryphal story of him biting the head off of a bat, and his often tempestuous relationship with wife and manager Sharon Osbourne keeps him in the news even when he’s not touring or releasing albums. He’s on record admitting to extramarital affairs and continuing battles with drug and alcohol abuse, but he draws the line at what he describes as the biggest popular misconception about him: “That I’m a Satanist.” With U.S. dates continuing into mid-October (and a UK/Europe tour this winter) Ozzy Osbourne’s criteria for what constitutes a good concert are rather simple and straightforward. “A good attitude and a good crowd,” he says. Ozzy and Co. will share the stage with Stone Sour when he plays Shoreline Amphitheatre this weekend.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): Electra is an action-

packed story written by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. It features epic characters taking drastic action in response to extreme events. In contrast to that text is Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time, which draws from the sensitive author's experiences growing up, coming of age and falling in love, all the while in quest for meaning and beauty. Author Virginia Woolfe compared the two works, writing, "In six pages of Proust we can find more complicated and varied emotions than in the whole of the Electra." In accordance with astrological omens, I recommend that you specialize in the Proustian mode rather than the Sophoclean. Your feelings in the next five weeks could be as rich and interesting and educational as they have been in a long time. Honor them!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Researchers in Maryland have created a new building material with a strength-to-weight ratio that's eight times better than steel. It's an effective insulator, and in some forms can be bent and folded. Best of all, it's biodegradable and cost-effective. The stuff is called nanowood, and is derived from lightweight, fast-growing trees like balsa. I propose that we make it your main metaphor for the foreseeable future. Why? Because I think you're primed to locate or create your own version of a flexible, durable, robust building block. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The U.S. Secretary of Defense paid an official visit to Indonesia early this year. The government arranged for him to observe soldiers as they demonstrated how tough and welltrained they were. Some of the troops shimmied through broken glass, demolished bricks with their heads, walked through fire, and bit heads off snakes. I hope you won't try stunts like that in the coming weeks, Gemini. It will be a favorable time for you show off your skills and make strong impressions. You'll be wise to impress important people with how creative and resourceful you are. But there's no need to try too hard or resort to exaggeration. CANCER (June 21-July 22): i confess that i have a

fuzzy self-image. With odd regularity, i don't seem to know exactly what or who i am. For example, i sometimes think i'm so nice and polite that i need to toughen up. But on other occasions i feel my views are so outrageous and controversial that i should tone myself down. Which is true? Often, i even neglect to capitalize the word "i." You have probably experienced some of this fuzziness, my fellow Cancerian. But you're now in a favorable phase to cultivate a more definitive self-image. Here's a helpful tip: We Cancerians have a natural talent for inspiring people to love us. This ability will come in especially handy as we work on making an enduring upgrade from i to I. Our allies' support and feedback will fuel our inner efforts to clarify our identity.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): "I am a little afraid of love,

it makes me rather stupid." So said author Simone de Beauvoir in a letter she wrote to her lover, Nelson Algren. I'm happy to let you know, Leo, that during the next 12 months, love is likely to have the opposite effect on you. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, it will tend to make you smarter and more perceptive. To the degree that you expand your capacity for love, you will become more resilient and a better decision-maker. As you get the chance to express love with utmost skill and artistry, you will awaken dormant potentials and boost your personal power.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Your theme in the coming weeks is the art of attending to details. But wait! I said "the art." That means attending to details with panache, not with overly meticulous fussing. For inspiration, meditate on St. Francis Xavier's advice, "Be great in little things." And let's take his thought a step further with a quote from author Richard Shivers: "Be great in little things, and you will be given opportunity to do big things." Novelist Tom Robbins provides us with one more nuance: "When we accept small wonders, we qualify ourselves to imagine great wonders."

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson offers this observation: "When you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation,

By ROB BREZSNY week of October 3

it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. [But] the most successful people in life recognize that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation." I think Tyson's simple wisdom is exactly what you need to hear right now, Libra. You're primed for a breakthrough in your ability to create your own fate.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Japanese entrepreneur Hiroki Terai has created a business that offers crying therapy. His clients watch short videos specially formulated to make them weep. A professional helper is on hand to gently wipe their tears away and provide comforting words. "Tears have relaxing and healing effects," says an Okinawan musician who works as one of the helpers. Hiroki Terai adds, "It has been said that one drop of tear has the effect of relieving stress for a week." I wish there were a service like this near where you live, Scorpio. The next two weeks will be a perfect time to relieve pent-up worry and sadness and anxiety through cathartic rituals like crying. What other strategies might work for you?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Fling out friendly

feelers! Sling out interesting invitations! Figure out how to get noticed for all the right reasons! Make yourself so interesting that no one can resist your proposals! Use your spunky riddle-solving powers to help ease your tribe's anxieties. Risk looking odd if that will make you smarter! Plunk yourself down in pivotal places where vitality is welling up! Send out telepathic beams that say, "I'm ready for sweet adventure. I'm ready for invigorating transformation!"

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "Someone spoke

to me last night, told me the truth," writes poet Doeianne Laux. "I knew I should make myself get up, write it down, but it was late, and I was exhausted from working. Now I remember only the flavor." I offer these thoughts, Capricorn, in the hope that they'll help you avoid Laux's mistake. I'm quite sure that crucial insights and revelations will be coming your way, and I want you to do whatever's necessary to completely capture them so you can study and meditate on them at length.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): As a young

man, Aquarian poet Louis Dudek struck up a correspondence with renowned poet Ezra Pound, who was 32 years older. Dudek "admired him immensely," and "loved him for the joy and the luminosity" of his poetry, but also resented him "for being so magnificent." With a mix of mischief and adulation, Dudek wrote a poem to his hero. It included these lines: "For Christ's sake, you didn't invent sunlight. There was sun dazzle before you. But you talk as if you made light or discovered it." I hope his frisky tone might inspire you to try something similar with your own idols. It would be healthy to be more playful and lighthearted about anything or anyone you take too seriously or give enormous power to.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In his book Till We Have Faces, C. S. Lewis writes, "Holy places are dark places. It is life and strength, not knowledge and words, that we get in them. Holy wisdom is not clear and thin like water, but thick and dark like blood." In that spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I suggest you seek out dark holy places that evoke wonder and reverence, even awe.
