“Hey, wanna get lunch?” Yes, you, of course I want to get lunch—I just don’t want to get it with you. You suck. Everything you have to say is some insipid circle-jerk about your car, your house or your wife. I hope she’s banging your neighbor and complaining about how—even though you got a raise at work—you can’t get one in the bedroom. Stop trying to tell me about your boat every time I go to the bathroom. I’m trying to pee, you dolt! The only time I want to hear that boat is if it sinks with you in it. I hope you get eaten by a shark, you twatsicle. You asked me out to lunch yesterday and I lied about having packed one that day. So it must’ve been awkward seeing me on my way back from your favorite taco truck without you. I hope seeing me helped you realize that nobody likes you. Because sure, you have a Porsche and live in S.F., but that can’t fill the void of your empty personality.

On the eve of swearing-in for a second term as Milpitas mayor, RICH TRAN is now expanding the scope of his political ambition. The 33-year-old homegrown elected tells Fly he’s eyeing a 2020 run to succeed Santa Clara County’s District 3 Supervisor DAVE CORTESE, who’s in turn gearing up to replace state Sen. JIM BEALL (D-San Jose) when he terms out that year. “I’m really thankful to have had the opportunity to be mayor of Milpitas and to have two terms to make a positive impact,” Tran says. “And I feel like my second term will be enough to put forth the work needed to help solve the challenges facing Milpitas.” As a social worker for several years until leaving the job in January 2017, Tran said he has a deep appreciation for the safety-net role They of the county, its public Did hospital system and What? its jails. He spent three SEND TIPS TO years as a social worker FLY@ at Valley Medical Center METRONEWS. and served many of the COM county’s most vulnerable homeless residents. “It’ll be a great challenge,” Tran says of his aspirations for higher office, “which is why I want to start this early.” It remains to be seen who Tran will go up against for Cortese’s seat. A few folks threw ex-San Jose vice mayor ROSE HERRERA’s name out there. Another former vice mayor—who’s now Silicon Valley Organization veep— MADISON NGUYEN, created campaign committees for both county supe and state Senate runs. (She recently told the Bay Area Reporter that she had no interest in Beall’s seat.) Still, Beall’s departure is going to draw a pretty crowded field. In addition to Cortese, the list tentatively includes former Assemblywoman NORA CAMPOS, Obama Federal Elections Commission appointee ANN RAVEL, terming-out District 4 Supervisor KEN YEAGER and SJ Councilman JOHNNY KHAMIS, who reportedly also has his sights set on Supervisor MIKE WASSERMAN’s South County seat.

HOMELAND Advocates rallied earlier this month against the feared deportation of Vietnamese immigrant Duc Nguyen, a San Jose father who was ultimately allowed to remain in the U.S. Under a new policy under consideration, others might not be so lucky.

Minority Deport Trump’s push to deport Viet nationals has shaken South Bay immigrant families BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

H

AI TRAN FLED Vietnam by sea, going from fishing boat to merchant ship to a refugee outpost in Hong Kong before a sibling sponsored his immigration to the U.S. in 1980. His wife, Kim Ho, joined him in California after her own treacherous journey, giving birth to their first American-born child, Huy Tran, two years after their arrival.

Over the ensuing decades, the family earned a keep through landscaping, mending clothes and eventually, their own nail salon. The war-scarred refugees laid the foundation for the younger Tran to attend San Jose State and Santa Clara University’s School of Law to pursue a career as an employment rights attorney in Silicon Valley. Huy Tran said the U.S. welcomed his family and helped them thrive. They initially relied on public assistance to get a leg up, becoming one of a myriad immigrant successes

woven into the tapestry of Bay Area life. But President Donald Trump’s push to deport potentially thousands of Vietnamese nationals rattled his faith in American institutions. “It’s terrible,” he said. And terrifying. The fear is widespread in San Jose—home to Little Saigon and the largest Vietnamese population of any American city—and throughout the greater South Bay, which boasts one of the highest concentrations of foreign-born residents in the U.S. The White House unilaterally decided to reverse a decade-old pact that bars deportation of Vietnamese refugees who arrived stateside before 1995. Federal officials say the new rule aims only to remove convicted criminals. “We have 7,000 convicted criminal aliens from Vietnam with final orders of removal; these are non-citizens who during previous administrations were arrested, convicted and ultimately ordered removed by a

said such policies needlessly and recklessly perpetuate generational trauma. It’s true that the people eligible for removal have broken laws, he said. But he believes it’s inhumane to return them to a place that’s foreign to them, not to mention potentially dangerous. Activists raised similar concerns about Duc Nguyen, a 35-year-old San Jose father of two who feared deportation earlier this month when the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called him in for additional questioning. Though he arrived in the U.S. after 1995, his case is reflects the plight of so many other people who preceded him in the time period covered by the repatriation deal. Nguyen came to the U.S. through a humanitarian resettlement program at age 12. Like many youth in communities of new immigrants, he was exposed to gangs and, with no legal help at the time, got caught up in the juvenile justice system. Over the ensuing decades, however, Nguyen led a productive life. The near-lifelong East Side resident regularly attends Saint Maria Goretti Parish and Chua Duc Vien Buddhist Community Pagoda. He has a 2-year daughter and supports a medically fragile 6-yearold stepson and his aging mother, who requires round-the-clock care. Thankfully for Nguyen, the #KeepDucHome social media campaign, sidewalk demonstrations, help from the Asian Law Alliance and other forms of public support for his continued residency paid off. Despite the scare from ICE, the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services approved his petition to remain stateside. Immigrant advocates caution that if the White House gets its way with the 2008 repatriation agreement, people like Nguyen will be in the crosshairs. “Imagine someone makes a stupid decision, maybe as a teenager, and tries to move on,” Tran said, “but instead of being able to do that, somebody’s grabbing them by the collar to a country across the ocean that they don’t know anymore. Maybe it’s a country they never knew. You’re punishing them a second time for crimes they already paid for. And the same families that got torn apart from the war are doomed to repeat the same cycle.”

federal immigration judge,” U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Katie Waldman said in a statement. “It’s a priority of this administration to remove criminal aliens to their home country.” Problem is, many of the targeted refugees sided with the U.S. in the Vietnam War, which makes them vulnerable to persecution by Hanoi authorities if forced to return. The reported targeting of Vietnamese refugees is part of a larger pattern by the Trump administration to go after immigrants with deep roots in the U.S. without regard for the circumstances that brought them here in the first place. This time around, Trump’s crackdown affects one of the few minority groups that tend to favor Republican candidates. Thousands of Vietnamese war refugees who settled in the South Bay flocked to the GOP out of aversion to the authoritarian communism that overthrew their home country. Though subsequent generations lean more to the left than their forebears, the demographic remains largely conservative in the South Bay and other Vietnamese enclaves such as Orange County. California Democrats, for their part, fiercely condemned the White House for trying to reinterpret the 2008 repatriation agreement to expand the roster of deportable immigrants. A dozen House members signed a letter saying the Vietnamese people vulnerable to removal “are Americans who are not familiar with the country they fled from.” Sending them back, they said, would devastate families and entire communities. Officials in Santa Clara County, which prides itself on being a socalled sanctuary jurisdiction, issued similar denunciations. In a statement emailed to reporters Monday, the county’s Office of Immigrant Relations vowed to “closely monitor” the situation. It also released a list of funded relief resources for Vietnamese, Hmong, Laotian, Cambodian and other members of the local Southeast Asian community worried worried about detention or deportation. Though he’s heard from plenty of fellow Vietnamese-Americans who agree with the Trump administration’s rationale for stepping up deportations, Tran

An inside look at San Jose politics

Kavanagh Accuser Makes Rare Public Statement

FRIEND AND MENTOR Susie B. Wilson’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from local leaders, who lamented the loss of a friend, mentor and trailblazer.

Former Supe Susie Wilson Dies Susanne Boothe Wilson, who died Dec. 13 at age 90 after a months-long battle with cancer, left an indelible mark on Silicon Valley politics, the men and women she mentored and every organization she served. She paved the way for women in elected office, serving from 1974 to ’78 on the San Jose City Council and ’79 to ’91 as a Santa Clara County supervisor when the region was known as the feminist capital of the nation. She championed gay rights at a time of widespread hostility toward queer and trans people and when defending them was a politically liability. She fought for Valley Medical Center—the only local hospital that treats patients even if they can’t pay—when a county executive wanted it closed for good. Wilson, who preferred to be called Susie, died in her San Jose home after months of treatment at the same hospital she worked tirelessly to support. Born in Gonzales, Texas,

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

on Sept. 30, 1928, Wilson moved to California in 1961 after the U.S. Navy discharged her husband, Bob. Years before her foray into local politics, Wilson volunteered for the YWCA of Silicon Valley, where she taught women to sew. She continued to support the non-profit in the decades to follow and spearheaded a fundraiser for a low-income apartment complex that was named after her when it opened in 1995. News of her death prompted an outpouring of grief from local leaders. “Today our community lost a hero, a champion, a friend,” VMC Foundation CEO Chris Wilder wrote in a widely shared Facebook post. Wilson co-founded the VMC Foundation and worked closely with Wilder over the years. Last month, the county Board of Supervisors named the Women and Children’s Center at VMC after Wilson for her role in saving the hospital and continuing to

support it through the foundation. “She will always be my friend and mentor,” Wilder continued in his tribute. “Rest in power, Susie.” Terming-out county supervisor Ken Yeager—who in 1992 became the South Bay’s first openly gay elected official— penned a heartfelt essay about Wilson, one of his early role models, whom he called a dear friend and “one of the most prominent political figures in the history of Santa Clara County.” The National Women’s Political Caucus of Silicon Valley, a group Wilson co-founded, mourned the passing of a “FEMtor,” “kind and brilliant leader and friend.” “With her passing, we share something she always told us,” the nonprofit advocacy group wrote in a public statement. “Qualities a candidate MUST have: 1. Superb health; 2. Be a speed reader; 3. And be a gutsy masochist. Susie, thank you for being a gutsy masochist.”

Christine Blasey Ford broke her silence to honor a fellow survivor of sexual assault. In her first media statement since testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee against soonto-become-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanagh in late September, Blasey Ford—a Palo Alto University psychology professor and Stanford University researcher—presented Sports Illustrated’s “Inspiration of the Year Award” to the first woman to publicly accuse ex-USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse. “I am honored to speak with you from afar about a woman I admire so much,” Blasey Ford said in a video the magazine posted online last week. “A woman who suffered abuse as a vulnerable teenage athlete, a woman who found the courage to talk publicly to stop the abuse of others.” That woman, she said, is Rachael Denhollander. “I am in awe of you and I will always be inspired by you,” Blasey Ford continued. “In stepping forward you took a huge risk, and you galvanized future generations to come forward even when the odds are seemingly stacked against them.” “The lasting lesson,” she concluded, “is that we all have the power to create real change and we cannot allow ourselves to be defined by the acts of others.” Denhollander, one of 150 women to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse, was also named by Time Magazine as one of the most influential people of 2018. —Jennifer Wadsworth

FIXER-UPPERS Ancient cave dwellings in Matera, Italy are being converted into performance and living spaces or luxury hotels.

Humble Beauty Our peripatetic columnist tours a poor Italian village with a rich cultural history BY GARY SINGH

J

UST OFF VIA RIDOLA in Matera, Italy, a dramatic view presents itself from a balcony in Piazzetta Giovanni Pascoli, a little plaza named after a local poet. From the landing, I can see the Sassi, the ancient cave dwellings of Matera. Many locals as well as tourists regularly gather at this vista point for the view. The Sassi date back to pre-Christian times, but one can make comparisons to ancient Jerusalem, which is

why both Pier Paolo Pasolini and Mel Gibson filmed parts of their respective Christ movies here. It is the poet Pascoli, however, that informs my entire presence in Matera from the first moment. On my first night I stay at a humble bed and breakfast named Myricae, after Pascoli’s first book of poetry, although I did not know his work beforehand. Then by sheer chance, I stumble across the vista point in a plaza named after him. The synchronicity is poetic enough to inspire me for the rest of the trip. Pascoli began his career in Matera,

where he taught Latin and Greek at a local high school back at the turn of the century. He published Myricae in 1903. After living here, Pascoli said, “Of the cities where I’ve been, Matera is the one that smiles at me the most, the one I see even better through a veil of poetry and melancholy.” I feel like the ghost of Pascoli is the one showing me around. Modern-day Matera, a sparkling little Italian village, surrounds the original swaths of cave dwellings, many of which are still intact. The history is far from pretty. Generations of peasants inhabited these cave complexes, living in abject poverty, ridden with malaria and often with no water or sanitation. Then came the anti-fascist writer and painter Carlo Levi, who was exiled to this area in the ’30s for opposing Mussolini. Levi documented the miserable conditions of the peasants in his famous 1945 memoir, Christ Stopped at Eboli, elevating the peasants’ predicament to the level of national consciousness, embarrassing the

entire country in the process. As a result, beginning in the ’50s, the peasants were eventually relocated to newer housing projects, although the process was a botched disaster from the beginning. Nowadays, Matera is a testament to how an ignored wasteland can transform itself into a reputable worldrenowned place. In 1993, the cave dwellings became an official UNESCO World Heritage site, the designation of which triggered more influx into the surrounding town, with new artisan shops, retail shopping and all the dynamics of a modern-day Italian village. And next year Matera will be one of the European Capitals of Culture, so an entire matrix of projects are scheduled to unfold throughout 2019. Artists from all over the world will descend upon Matera to create works involving the locals, and a few of the caves are already converted into performance spaces, living arrangements or luxury hotels. Carlo Levi’s own paintings of peasant life are also on display at the National Museum of Mediaeval and Modern Art, just near the aforementioned vista point. The philosophy of the 2019 European Capital of Culture, as the director explained for us, is not to attract tourism. Instead, visitors will be encouraged to operate as participants in a year-long enterprise, including various networking and collaborative art projects, acts of lifestyle engagement and other endeavors connecting them with the everyday experience of what it means to be a citizen of Matera. Thankfully, the peasant heritage still resonates and many of the locals remain proud of the history. Again, I discovered this without even trying. At a restaurant named Kappador in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, I paid seven euros for a fantastic bowl of Crapiata, a type of rural peasant stew made of various legumes. It was perfect against the cold weather, which was just above freezing. According to some materials I found at Myricae, Pascoli highlighted how beauty could be found in the simplest and poorest of things. This was a metaphor for Matera, he wrote, a town the humility of which takes your breath away. There are no fancy Baroque decorations or ornate outlines, he wrote, just a place rich with humble history.

There’ll be plenty of time for self-improvement in 2019—so eat, drink and be merry this New Year’s Eve.

I

T’S ALWAYS DARKEST before the dawn. At least that’s what they say. And as the sun sets on 2018, we find ourselves working increasingly in the sterile, flickering glow of artificial light. This Friday marks the winter solstice. We are entering the long dark. This time of year lends itself to contemplation and self-examination—as the weather drives us indoors and as tradition calls on all of us to strive toward selfimprovement. And that’s great and all… But it can really be a bummer. Fortunately, there is another way to observe the coming of 2019. From small neighborhood bars to award-winning restaurants, from nightclubs to music venues, Silicon Valley is brimming with New Year’s Eve celebrations. Boozy parties, fancy fêtes, decadent feasts and lively performances—there’s something for everyone. So diets, workouts, temperance and modesty can wait. Dress up or keep it casual. Dance all night are park it on a barstool. And before you resolve to make yourself into a better person, make sure you eat, drink and keep things merry on Dec. 31. Happy New Year! 16

help from our local tamaleras, we all can unwrap a tamale or two this season. Here is a small but stout list of my favorite places to pick up fresh tamales any time of year.

The Tamale Factory 233 S White Rd, San Jose 408.729.1846 tamalefactorysj.com Formerly known as Lucy’s Tamales, The Tamale Factory has been cranking out an award-winning product for nearly 25 years. In addition to the standards—chicken, pork, elote and jalapeño and cheese— they also have a sweet version that comes with a raisin and brown sugar filling. Order online to save time and get to chowing down. Also, be sure to pick up a few containers of their housemade red and green salsas to spice things up. They will be open Christmas day.

Diana’s Tamale Factory MEAT & MASA Here today, gone tamale. The holiday season is a great time for tamales in the South Bay.

Gift Wrapped Tamales are a tasty holiday tradition meant for sharing with friends and family BY JOHN DYKE

I

N LITHUANIA, THE traditional Kuios feast can take up to a week to prepare; in Germany, roast goose, the customary Christmas dish, is a serious endeavor; panettone bread is common at Italian holiday celebrations; and in France, the Bûche de Noël—a giant Ho Hos-esque confection— resembles a Yule Log. When it comes Mexican-American families, it is quite common to say feliz navidad with meat and masa. The tamale is simple enough. It’s little more than a finely ground corn

dough shell encasing any number of delightful ingredients, such as cheese, corn or meat. Wrapped in a corn husk and baked or steamed, it can be eaten alone or served with any number of tasty toppings. The origins of Christmastime tamales can be traced back to the Mesoamerican cultures that used the original husk-wrapped packets of goodness as ceremonial religious offerings. Over time, as these indigenous peoples converted to Christianity, they brought this delicious tradition along as part of many religious ceremonies— including baptisms, weddings and Christmas.

Though they appear quite minimalist to the eye, the making tamales is actually quite laborintensive. My friend’s abuelitas have been known to hole up in the kitchen for days preparing bushels and bushels of tamales for the big day. I spoke with Ruby Lopez, the executive assistant at the Tamale Factory, about the whole process. “Every step of the process—from soaking the corn husks, preparing the masa and meat, as well as applying the masa to the corn husk—is all done with the utmost care and patience,” Lopez explains. “Making tamales can definitely be a lengthy process.” However, it is rewarding work, as it serves as a group activity for the whole family to rally around. “[We are] continuing a longstanding family tradition that goes back generations,” Lopez continues, explaining that her mother, Claudia—the owner and founder of Tamale Factory—has given a role to each of her children. Not all of us are lucky enough to have an abuelita to gift us homemade holiday tamales. But with a little

2001 Story Rd, San Jose 408.251.1813 You may have seen a representative from Diana’s around town, dishing out delicious tamales from one of their food trucks. But Diana’s home base, located off of Story Road, will gladly meet all your tamale needs. It’s best to call ahead for larger orders, but walk-ins are always welcome. They’ll be open Christmas day until 5 p.m.

Casa Vicky’s 792 E Julian St, San Jose 408.995.5488 casavicky.com Serving downtown San Jose since 1968, Casa Vicky’s is probably most famous for its house-made corn and flour tortillas, which are prepared in the dining area as patrons eat. While their pork and chicken tamales are available year-round, they are not typically a tamale shop. However, they will accept large orders for the holiday season. They also offer an expanded tamale lineup this time of year. It includes vegetarian options— like corn and Anaheim pepper and cheese-filled tamales—as well as a

beef. They require at a least a two-day lead time, and though they are open on Christmas Eve, they’ll be closed Dec. 25. Prices are a bit steeper than some of their contemporaries, but their tamales are also gigantic. Two of them should be more than enough to satisfy most appetites.

Tamales Lupitas 77 Senter Rd, San Jose 408.421.4995 tamaleslupitas.com Though it may seem small, Tamales Lupitas is a force to be reckoned with. This street cart, which can be found parked in front of the Marina Supermarket on Senter Road, has some of the most unique flavors out there. In addition to staples like green chili chicken and red chili pork, they are also known for their Oaxaqueño (chicken mole), chicharron (pork rinds) and fruit-flavored varieties, including

strawberry and pineapple. Word to the wise: they sell out fast—usually by 10 a.m. on a typical day—so place an order in advance, either by phone or email.

La Perla Taqueria 1150 McGinness Ave, San Jose 408.251.4884 laperlataqueriasj.com Known for serving some of the best mariscos and super chavelas on the East Side, La Perla Taqueria doesn’t typically carry tamales. However, when Christmas rolls around, everything changes. Their tamales are only available on a preorder basis, and they only carry the tamaleras holy triumvirate of pork, chicken and jalapeño and cheese. They are one of the most economical options on this list, but prices do go up as Christmas draws nigh. They are available for Christmas Eve pickups, but are closed on Christmas.

So… it turns out that Dec. 21 is Ugly Sweater Day. And here we were thinking it was just the Winter Solstice. There are multiple parties in the South Bay aimed at providing a reason to wear that monstrosity grandma made. Stilettos Wine Bar in Saratoga is hosting its soiree starting at 6pm this Friday. California’s Great America is offering discounted tickets to those sporting garish holiday garments. And Thirsty Bar in Santa Clara is pairing their Ugly Sweater celebration with a Toys for Tots drive. Woodhams Lounge in San Jose is hosting their party on Dec. 22 instead. (NV)

Fans of prog-rock, funk, R&B and smooth pop have always had overlapping tastes, but few modern musicians have blurred these lines quite as well as he has. Sat, 10pm, $25+ Pure Nightclub, Sunnyvale When it comes to gauging a DJ’s ability to light up a dance floor, few tastemakers in the game have a finger more firmly on the pulse than Diplo. A co-sign from the Florida-bred producer extraordinaire is more than enough to get people listening. This New Jersey beatsmith and DJ has the support not only of Diplo but a slew of other big name selectors as well, from Steve Aoki to the Chainsmokers. Thus far, 4B has dropped a two proper EPs for Mad Decent, and he keeps his SoundCloud page fresh by cranking out club remixes. (NV)

GET MARRIED HOLIDAY PARTY

FUNKY CHRISTMAS

The Limos will always have a spot in the hometown hall of fame, and not only because they’ve put out a number of truly great songs. The guys also throw awesome parties. The alt-electronic duo’s annual XXXMas Fckfest at The Ritz is not to be missed. This year the show is masquerading as a “Super Wholesome Family Christmas,” but frontman Eric Victorino says the show is absolutely on the naughty list. Come for the music—which includes sets from Cemetery Sun, Balancing the Lion and Savant Garde—and stay the costume contest, drink specials and prizes. And keep your ears out for new music from Victorino’s other band, Strata, in the new year. (AS)

Sat, 7:30pm, $10 Art Boutiki, San Jose

Tue, 8pm, Free The Continental, San Jose

There’s no place like home for the holidays. Just ask Get Married, San Jose’s local pop-punk six-piece. They’re fresh off of a national tour and a festival appearance in Florida and back home in time for their second annual holiday party extravaganza at Art Boutiki. Supported by San Jose punk staples Stickup Kid, Small Crush and New Fossils, the all-ages show is a special chance to hear a sampling of the local punk scene all under one roof—and maybe even catch a few Christmas covers. Pro tip: Wear a Santa hat and you may be invited to join in on the caroling on stage. (AS)

After all the gifts are unwrapped and the hot toddies are kicking in, sometimes you just need to get out of the house and get down. While plenty of watering holes will be closed, the Continental will have a wide open dance floor. This James Brown tribute is a bona fide holiday tradition at the Conti. Just a few years ago, Mayer Hawthorne stopped in and played a set, so there’s no way of knowing who might show up. One thing you can count on is hearing some classic cuts from the excellent seasonal staple, James Brown’s Funky Christmas. Admission is free before 10pm. (AJ)

DEATHLY ARCHITECTURE ‘Las Tropicanas’ by Eduardo Carrillo is one of many works on display at the artist’s retrospective now showing at Triton.

Surreal Remix Artist Eduardo Carrillo takes indigenous, mystical approach to classical tropes BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

R

EFERENCES TO Diego Velásquez’s spirited mustaches; Giorgio de Chirico’s dreamy, unoccupied plazas; the color schemes that El Greco mutilated and then blended back together to make into the night sky. You’ll find all of these references, and more, in “Testament of the Spirit: Paintings by Eduardo Carrillo,” now showing at the Triton Museum of Art. There are surfers, bricklayers and other ordinary models, holding classical poses found in Greco-

Roman statuary. Biblical stories are recast with brown-skinned men and women, while figures from Mexican folklore hold their own equally potent mythical space next to them. This splendid exhibit makes the case that Carrillo (1937-97) absorbed all of these influences but then went on to shape his own moral universe from similar materials—namely, oils on panels or watercolors on paper. First and foremost, he accomplishes his vision with color. In Self-Portrait with Green Frame (1960), red isn’t red; it’s molten ash. His own flesh roils across the canvas, flickering in waves. His bare chest ranges in expressionistic tones from carnation to puce to pewter to daubs of sea green. Compare it with an

earlier self-portrait from 1958 and the palette is more vibrant, his gaze more direct. By the late 1960s, his surrealistic triptych—Subterranean Garden, Cabin in the Sky, Pearly Gates—displays that mastery of expanding color, complemented by form and narrative. Subterranean Garden bears the same precision as René Magritte’s “Empire of Light” series. You enter Carrillo’s formal landscape in the same way that you enter Magritte’s. Your line of sight focuses on objects at or near the center of the frame. Both artists create a trompe l’oeil effect, as if you could walk straight into their paintings. They suggest you could if you were dreaming of them. Magritte paints an isolated house at the end of a lane. It’s just past dusk, but a light post is shining. Trees darken the block. Only by knocking on the eerily lit front door will you find out if anyone lives there. Carrillo paints not one but six graduated tiers in a solemn limbo. The bleak, pastoral imagery suggests that heaven and hell might share some of the same real estate, or are at least next-door neighbors. At the bottom, central edge of the frame, there’s a break in the garden wall shaped like

an unseen gate that repeats itself on the opposing side. A path then continues onto three vistas in varying shades of green. Each one leads the eye onward to a tunnel and then a corral or stadium. The land turns to rust and finally into an ochre hill that slopes down into a bay. Like Empire of Light, the world Carrillo proposes feels coldly fixed, pre-ordained, made by an absent but civilized god who invites you in to snoop around at your own peril. Civilization literally eats itself in the extraordinary mural Chicano History. It’s a visceral confirmation of America’s violent colonialist past. Rivers turn red with the blood of indigenous peoples. Uncle Sam doubles as the Grim Reaper, leading a troop of soldiers to their doom. A towering religious figure skewers the world on his sword. His cardinal hat sits atop a skeleton’s mad grin. Carrillo, along with Sergio Hernandez, Ramses Noriega and Saul Solache, painted the mural at UCLA in 1970. The work was meant to be taken down only temporarily in 1991 but was never re-installed. It’s related to the nightmares of Hieronymus Bosch but fueled by rage, and a determination to tell history from the point of view of the oppressed. In Pedro Pablo Celedón’s documentary, Eduardo Carrillo: A Life of Engagement, we learn that Carrillo, who taught at UC Santa Cruz, painted a mural there—downtown in the Palomar Arcade. But Birth, Death and Regeneration was painted over in 1979. The film suggests that the community wasn’t then ready for Carrillo’s mix of art, mythology and politics. However, a hopeful note on the Museo Eduardo Carrillo website states that, “Plans are underway to re-create the mural.” “Testament of the Spirit” feels like an overdue homage. Carrillo imbues still lifes (the odd table and chair) with as much energy as his multicultural reclamation of the Western canon. In paintings like Leda and the Swan or Couple in the Garden, the myths he works with are universal. It’s only the color of the skin tones that are no longer pale and white.

REVIEW

DECEMBER 19-25, 2018 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

FISH WARS Aquaman is the the hero that launched a thousand fish.

Under the Sea THE PROBLEM WITH using Joseph Campbell’s Hero With a Thousand Faces as a template for a movie is that you can’t use every one of those heroes; you have to make a choice. Is your hero Hercules or King Arthur? James Wan’s Aquaman has way too much going on. It’s all three Lord of the Rings underwater, with a grand finale giant fish war that’s like the largest tureen of bouillabaisse ever cooked. Plus it’s a tomb raider movie, and a finding your royal destiny movie. Among these moments, it’s also what it started out being—a superhero Aquaman movie with the titular good guy battling the terrestrial arch-villain, Black Manta, played by the bigly Yahya AbdulPG-13, 142 Mins. Mateen II wearing a giant football-shaped helmet. Valleywide Who is this Aquaman, anyway? Early on, the half-Atlantean, half-human hero (played by the massive and likable Jason Momoa) rescues a Russian sub from some sadistic pirates. “Aquaman!” the rescued cry, and the muscly hero greets them in Russian. He’s known at once, a hero who knows all men’s tongues. Why then, at other times, does Arthur the Aquaman appear to be a beer-chugging lunk, too dumb to know Pinocchio was a book before it was a movie? Despite Arthur’s dislike of his snobby ancestral home, magenta-haired princess Mera (Amber Heard) begs him to come to the lower depths in order to dissuade his half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) from coming up here and finishing off every last one of us polluting landlubbers once and for all. Wilson looks a bit like Aquaman in the Silver Age comics, blonde and bland. In his struggle, Aquaman is helped by his childhood mentor (WIllem Dafoe), who himself resembles the watery hero’s across-the-street rival, The Submariner. Nothing wrong with the production design but, just like when you’re scuba diving, turbulence interferes with visibility. In Atlantis, the citizens ride 20foot seahorses, champing at their bits. A highlight is an attack of humanoid angler fish with saber teeth. Occasionally, you’re allowed to see the attractions, the iridescent suits of scaly armor with nautilus shaped shoulder guards and, appropriate to the fishy theme, codpieces. A gigantic octopus beats war drums at a gladiator match, one of the regularly scheduled fight scenes with the digitally simulated battlers seen from all angles of a gyroscopic camera. Wan has an unforgivable impatience with romance and contemplative moments. If the old-time directors sometimes fired a starter pistol to get a quick reaction from slowpoke actors, he improves on that by firing a rocket through the middle of any quieter scene. Incidentally, when Mera and Aquaman arrive in the Sahara, the soundtrack plays Pitbull’s “Ocean to Ocean,” which sample’s Toto’s “Africa.” Could have been worse—remember Donovan’s “Atlantis?” —Richard von Busack

metroactive FILM

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY Saoirse Ronan takes the titular role in ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ which offers a great many frills, but not much else.

Family Feud ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ splurges on wardrobe but skimps on history BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

I

N TUDOR ENGLAND, it’s just one damn thing after another. Widowed by a weakling French King, the new Queen of Scotland (Saoirse Ronan) arrives in 1561 on a glum coast. Flash forward to her fate at the chopping block at Fotheringhay Castle. Guards rip off her outer gown, revealing the red dress of a Catholic martyr. Gasps all around either at the effrontery or at the chic fashion choice. But the film is about the lead up to this death, in her clashes with her ruthless frenemy (and cousin)

Queen Elizabeth, played by Margot Robbie. The Scots Queen has a rocky time in her batcave of a castle. She’s thundered-against by the Protestants. Their spokesman: the preacher who put the Knox in obnoxious, John Knox. David Tennant plays the angry divine as a walking hairball in a velvet cap; he’s so obscured by whiskers that he’s excused from bugging his eyes trying to get his fans to recognize him. Mary faces wrath among the Scottish lairds, paid with English gold to destabilize the land. But the Queen of Scots just wants a court of peace where everyone can have access to her multi-pierced

ear. She’s religiously tolerant and LGBT friendly: her favorite is a gay lad-in-waiting, played by Ismael Cruz Cordova, who likes to dress up as one of the ladies. It’s a much nicer place than Elizabeth’s palace, where the earls and knights all stand around muttering into their ruffs, wondering when Her Majesty is going to get married and start producing a few heirs. Director Josie Rourke debuts after a background in theater. She’s a sort of calmer version of Julie Taymor: Here are processionals, actors standing and delivering their lines and a fascination with draperies and costume. As in most modern Shakespeare, Rourke uses color-blind casting of black and Asian actors, which will hopefully nauseate British National Party members. Exteriors are lots of cattle and a little battle, with theatrical euphemism. There is no arterial spray in the skirmishes staged like football scrimmages; the entirety is far less violent than versions of this story I’d seen decades ago. Ronan is ravishingly pretty and sympathetic, and gets a kissing scene

on horseback.“You dare touch a sovereign without her permission!” she says, which is sort of immemorial movie stuff. Given Robbie’s devotion to outre makeup and staring—as seen in the ice skating scenes in I Tonya— it’s too bad she didn’t get to go eyeball to eyeball with John Knox. She has a prosthetic hook to her nose, and after a bout with the pox, she sports thick white makeup and a fluorescent redorange wig that makes her resemble Stephen King’s It. Each queen has a credible argument that the other was a usurper, but Mary Queen of Scots suggest that they would have had easier lives if they’d shown true sisterhood to one another. Elizabeth complains that “the throne has made me a man” as if it’s a bad thing. This, as opposed to that famous moment where the English queen told her court proudly she had “the heart and stomach of a king.” ”I am not my father,” Elizabeth says, stung, when Mary predicts that being in Elizabeth’s care will end with her being executed; one previously thought that Elizabeth was proud of having a feared tyrant of a father, and that his reputation steadied her shaky throne. Mary Queen of Scots breaks its template of modern enlightenment at the end. Exiled and at her weakest, Mary decides to pull rank on her rival Queen, a display of the kind of bravery that is usually called “gall.” However, the explanation of what happened between imprisonment and execution is missing. In college they warn you against the kind of history where things had to happen because they happened the way they happened. Thus we miss the question of what kind of plotting Mary had been up to—real or imaginary. Mary Queen of Scots is an improvement over the pointless catfighting in The Favourite, but it misses a conclusion more solid than the idea that menfolk cause all the trouble in the world—that they’re weaklings and schemers keeping the sisters from doing it for themselves.

SOUL MEN Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge both enjoyed success as hip-hop producers before becoming bandleaders.

Blue Notes Led by a dynamic duo of hip-hop vets, The Midnight Hour comes to Stritch BY NICK VERONIN

A

LI SHAHEED Muhammad and Adrian Younge grew up on opposite sides of the country. Muhammad hails from Brooklyn, while Younge is from Los Angeles. But musically speaking, the two have been on a collision course their entire lives.

What began as a very solitary odyssey for both men—spinning records and punching out beats on drum machines—would eventually lead Muhammad and Younge to find careers as producers, composers and collaborators with many great artists. Fans of Golden Era hip-hop will surely recognize Muhammad as the producer/

DJ for one of the most respected rap groups of all time, A Tribe Called Quest. While Younge’s name may not carry the marquee prestige of Muhammad’s, his resume reads like a who’s who of hip-hop talent. He’s got production credits with Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Common. It was Younge’s work with Wu-Tang Clan founding father Ghostface Killah that put him on Muhammad’s radar. Younge composed and produced Ghostface’s critically acclaimed 2013 record, Twelve Reasons to Die. On the tour in support of that album, Ghostface rapped along with a live band led by Younge. The tour was passing through New York when Muhammad tweeted at Younge.

“I was tripping, because I love Tribe so much,” Younge recalls. The pair met for lunch, and soon they were in the studio together. It was there that seeds were sown for The Midnight Hour, Muhammad and Younge’s collaborative album, which takes everything the two have learned from the world of hip-hop and spins it into a sprawling, 10-player neo-soul ensemble. But before Muhammad and Younge made The Midnight Hour—a 20-song set featuring guest appearances from the likes of Raphael Saadiq, CeeLo Green, Luther Vandross and Bilal—they embarked upon what was arguably an even larger project: scoring two seasons of Luke Cage, a Marvel Comics-inspired series, which ran on Netflix from 2016 to 2018. While working on the show, the pair sharpened their craft even more, as they were expected to produce anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes of music per episode under tight deadlines. “We learned how to make great music in less time,” Younge says of the experience. “We were finishing multiple songs in a day. When you streamline your process and have to do things under a television deadline, you become better.”

Muhammad, who admits he had been accustomed to the “luxury” of working on his own timeline, says the two years on the show changed the way he approaches writing. Specifically, he says, he no longer accepts the excuse that he simply isn’t feeling the vibe of a song. “I don’t do that anymore,” he says. “This is the idea of the song. I’m going to do it. I’m going to complete it and move on. You can advance a song every day. Writer’s block shouldn’t last long.” That’s not to say that genuine inspiration and interpersonal connection aren’t essential to making music. Muhammad and Younge know that, considering how well they work as a team. “When Adrian and I got together and started working with each other, it was like an instant connection,” Muhammad recalls of their early sessions in the studio. Younge agrees: “It’s a kinship I’ve never really had with another producer.” That kinship extends to the pair’s shared interest in history. A Tribe Called Quest’s music often stood out from that of contemporaries thanks to Muhammad’s knack for infusing the group’s beats with a jazzy swagger. Similarly, as a producer, Younge first made a name for himself by riffing on the sounds he picked up in his parents’ classic soul and R&B records. From a philosophical perspective, Muhammad notes, jazz, blues, funk, soul and R&B are all inextricably linked to the African American experience. “The music came out of a place of being oppressed,” Muhammad says. “The same happened for hip-hop.” Younge agrees, adding that hiphop is both literally and figuratively a collage. Songs are constructed by piecing together scraps of older music while weaving in bits of the new. And while it’s true that The Midnight Hour is working with live instruments as opposed to snippets of sampled vinyl, the goal remains the same. “I think that what we are trying to do is to tap into the experience of our forefathers,” Muhammad says.

THU DEC 20 | CIRCUS OF SIN: SILENT BUT DEADLY NIGHT @ CARAVAN After moving to Thursdays, this monthly burlextravaganza looks poised to become the free “release valve” for those who simply cannot wait for the weekend. It’s a Saturday on a Thursday and tongue in cheek in every possible way. Doors at 9pm. Hosted by Some Guy. Caravan Lounge, 98 S Almaden Ave, San Jose

FRI DEC 21 | MADEINTYO @ PURE NIGHTCLUB As a former wannabe rapper, I rep hip-hop like the South Bae does: I don’t. Or just not enough. Folks don’t generally think of the bottom/better half of the Bay when they think of rap. That’s unfortunate. As a venue, Pure Nightclub is keeping hip-hop and rap alive—in Sunnyvale. I’m not saying they’re doing it single-handedly, but in our neck of the woods there aren’t a lot of willing hip-hop venues. Bringing rappers like MadeinTYO out from Atlanta is a good step. MadeinTYO is what today sounds like and is likely stepping toward tomorrow. Pure deserves some of the highest of fives for the acts they’ve been bringing our way. 10pm. Pure Nightclub, 146 South Murphy Avenue, Sunnyvale

SUN DEC 23 | BAY AREA ALIVE! CONCERT @ LIQUID LOUNGE Riding the coattails of what I said above about venues for hip-hop, I want to applaud Liquid Lounge for bringing an intentionally 16+ show to downtown San Jose. A city (as much as I love it) that is downright notorious to young folks for completely forgetting about them. I get it—most venues don’t give kids a chance to be entertained because they don’t spend enough money. This show is a two-parter: 6pm–9pm for ages 16 and up, then a second show for the drinking set at 10pm. In my book, this is a reasonable answer to a real conundrum. Acts include, Katt, Menace Man, Wil J, Erica Rose, Ashley Mehta, Bonassi G, Xay, ThatDay June. Liquid, 32 S Third St, San Jose

ADVICE GODDESS

By AMY ALKON

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

The response by some women these days to men’s well-intentioned acts must tempt at least a few men to swing entirely in the other direction: “I could open the car door for my date, or start to drive off and let her throw herself across the hood and hang on.” To these women, chivalry is “benevolent sexism,” affectionate but patronizing—a way of treating women that suggests they are in need of men’s help and protection. It involves things like opening doors and offering to carry a heavy item for a female colleague. Research has found that benevolent sexism can be undermining to women, even leading them to feel less competent at their job. However, complicating things a bit, new research by social psychologists Pelin Gul and Tom R. Kupfer finds that women—including those with strong feminist beliefs—are

attracted to men with benevolently sexist attitudes and behaviors despite finding these men “patronizing and undermining.” The researchers theorize that what women are actually attracted to is the underlying signal that a man is willing to invest in them and any children they might have together. Frankly, even I engage in benevolent, uh, something or other—like by holding the door open for any person, male or female, coming up to an entrance behind me—simply because it’s nice for one human to look out for another. Ultimately, your best bet is behaving as genteelly as you would if you had no idea about benevolent sexism. Most women will probably appreciate it, even if a few of them say “Thank you...that’s very nice of you!” in language more along the lines of “Screw off, you medieval turd!”

I’m a 34-year-old man, newly single after a relationship that started in college. Though I love the work I do running a small non-profit, I don’t make tons of money. I’m worried that my inability to “provide” in any sort of lavish way will make it hard for me to attract post-college women. Do I need to win the lottery?—Making A Difference It is best if the dream date you’re proposing isn’t all in the presentation: “We have reservations tonight at a cozy new hot spot—my studio apartment with the heat that won’t shut off. Dress tropical!” I do often write about how women evolved to prefer male partners with high status—men with the ability to “provide.” However, what’s important to note—and what has some bearing on your chances with the ladies—is that ancestral humans lacked anything resembling wealth, i.e. portable, conservable assets. Though no modern woman wants a man who lives paycheck advance to paycheck advance, there’s hope for you—from research on one of the few cultures today in which men aren’t the primary earners. Political scientist Nechumi Yaffe looked at ultraOrthodox Jews in Israel, a community in which the men spend all day hunched over studying the Torah and the women are the breadwinners. Yaffe finds that, as in other cultures,

the men the ultra-Orthodox women prefer as mates are those who are the best in their “field”—which, in this community, comes out of the level of religious devotion and piety the men show. In other words, though men’s status is a vital mating asset across cultures, “how status is achieved may be culturally specific.” As for you, I’m guessing you don’t work at a non-profit because you hit your head and forgot to become a cold corporate tool. You’re surely part of a community that shares your beliefs about the importance of making a difference. Chances are, many of the women in your world don’t want some money-worshipping hedge fund buttknuckle. To ramp up your status, you need to stand out as a top do-gooder, coming up with and implementing innovative ideas to ease people’s suffering and make the world a better place. This should make you extremely attractive to a woman with similar values.

I’m confused. Does treating women as equals mean not doing those things that would previously have been considered chivalrous, like opening doors and giving a woman your coat? What’s now considered polite, and what’s considered offensive?—Bewildered

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): Consumer Reports says

that between 1975 and 2008, the average number of products for sale in a supermarket rose from about 9,000 to nearly 47,000. The glut is holding steady. Years ago you selected from among three or four brands of soup and shampoo. Nowadays you may be faced with 20 varieties of each. I suspect that 2019 will bring a comparable expansion in some of your life choices, Aries, especially when you're deciding what to do with your future and who your allies should be. This could be both a problem and a blessing. For best results, opt for choices that have all three of these qualities: fun, usefulness and meaningfulness.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): People have been trying to convert ordinary metals into gold since at least 300 AD. At that time, an Egyptian alchemist named Zosimos of Panopolis unsuccessfully mixed sulfur and mercury in the hope of performing such magic. Fourteen centuries later, seminal scientist Isaac Newton also failed in his efforts to produce gold from cheap metal. But now let's fast forward to 20-century chemist Glenn T. Seaborg, a distinguished researcher who won a share of the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1951. He and his team did an experiment with bismuth, an element that's immediately adjacent to lead on the periodical table. By using a particle accelerator, they literally transmuted a small quantity of bismuth into gold. I propose that we make this your teaching story for 2019. May it inspire you to seek transformations that have never before been possible. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): U.S. President Donald Trump wants to build a concrete and fenced wall between Mexico and America, hoping to slow down the flow of immigrants across the border. Meanwhile, 12 Northern African countries are collaborating to build a 4,750-mile-long wall of drought-resistant trees at the border of the Sahara, hoping to stop the desert from swallowing up farmland. During the coming year, I'll be rooting for you to draw inspiration from the latter, not the former. Erecting new boundaries will be healthy for you—if it's done out of love and for the sake of your health, not out of fear and divisiveness. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian poet and

filmmaker Jean Cocteau advised artists to notice the aspects of their work that critics didn't like—and then cultivate those precise aspects. He regarded the disparaged or misconstrued elements as being key to an artist's uniqueness and originality, even if they were as yet immature. I'm expanding his suggestion and applying it to all of you Crabs during the next 10 months, even if you're not strictly an artist. Watch carefully what your community seems to misunderstand about the new trends you're pursuing, and work hard to ripen them.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In 1891, a 29-year-old British

mother named Constance Garnett decided she would study the Russian language and become a translator. She learned fast. During the next 40 years, she produced English translations of 71 Russian literary books, including works by Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev and Chekhov. Many had never before been rendered in English. I see 2019 as a Constance Garnett-type year for you, Leo. Any lateblooming potential you might possess could enter a period of rapid maturation. Awash in enthusiasm and ambition, you'll have the power to launch a new phase of development that could animate and motivate you for a long time.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I'll be bold and predict

that 2019 will be a nurturing chapter in your story: a time when you will feel loved and supported to a greater degree than usual; a phase when you will be more at home in your body and more at peace with your fate than you have in a long time. I have chosen an appropriate blessing to bestow upon you, written by the poet Claire Wahmanholm. Speak her words as if they were your own. "On Earth I am held, honeysuckled not just by honeysuckle but by everything—marigolds, bog after bog of small sundews, the cold smell of spruce."

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): "Be very, very careful what you put into that head, because you will never, ever get it out." This advice is sometimes attributed to 16th-century politician and cardinal Thomas Wolsey. Now I'm offering it to you as one of your important

By ROB BREZSNY week of December 19

themes in 2019. Here's how you can best take it to heart. First, be extremely discerning about what ideas, theories and opinions you allow to flow into your imagination. Make sure they're based on objective facts and make sure they're good for you. Second, be aggressive about purging old ideas, theories and opinions from your head, especially if they're outmoded, unfounded or toxic.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Memorize this quote

by author Peter Newton and keep it close to your awareness during the coming months: "No remorse. No if-onlys. Just the alertness of being." Here's another useful maxim, this one from author Mignon McLaughlin: "Every day of our lives we are on the verge of making those slight changes that would make all the difference." Shall we make it a lucky three mottos to live by in 2019? This one's by author A. A. Milne: "You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Until 1920, most

American women didn't have the right to vote. For that matter, few had ever been candidates for public office. There were exceptions. In 1866, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the first to seek a seat in Congress. In 1875, Victoria Woodhull ran for president. Susanna Salter became the first woman mayor in 1887. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, Sagittarius, 2019 will be a Stanton-Woodhull-Salter type of year for you. You're likely to be ahead of your time and primed to innovate. You'll have the courage and resourcefulness necessary to try seemingly unlikely and unprecedented feats, and you'll have a knack for ushering the future into the present.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Studies show

that the best possible solution to the problem of homelessness is to provide cheap or free living spaces for the homeless. Not only is it the most effective way of helping the people involved; in the long run, it's also the least expensive. Is there a comparable problem in your personal life? A chronic difficulty that you keep putting Band-aids on but that never gets much better? I'm happy to inform you that 2019 will be a favorable time to dig down to find deeper, more fundamental solutions, to finally fix a troublesome issue rather than just addressing its symptoms.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Many people in

Iceland write poems, but only a few publish them. There's even a term for those who put their creations away in a drawer rather than seeking an audience: skúffuskáld, literally translated as "drawer-poet." Is there a comparable phenomenon in your life, Aquarius? Do you produce some good thing but never share it? Is there a part of you that you're proud of but keep secret? Is there an aspect of your ongoing adventures that's meaningful but mostly private? If so, 2019 will be the year you might want to change your mind about it.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Scientists at Goldsmiths University in London did a study to determine the catchiest pop song ever recorded. After extensive research in which they evaluated an array of factors, they decided that Queen's "We Are the Champions" is the song that more people love to sing than any other. This triumphant tune happens to be your theme song in 2019. I suggest you learn the lyrics and melody, and sing it once every day. It should help you build on the natural confidence-building influences that will be streaming into your life. Homework: Write a parable or fairy tale that captures what your life has been like in 2018. Testify at Freewillastrology.com.

OADING YOUR STASH box will keep your holiday more chill than the North Pole when dealing with South Bay seasonal traditions like three-hour parking lot clusterfucks at Valley Fair, but watch out if you’re traveling this weekend with your cannabis. Adult use of marijuana is now legal in California, but that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all; whether reaching your destination by plane, train or automobile, laws, rules and regulations still apply when traveling with that good green Christmas tree.

Marijuana is banned under federal law, so traveling with it by airplane or railroad is technically illegal, even among the 420-friendly West Coast states like California, Oregon and Washington. But some airports have their own favorable marijuana policies; Los Angeles International announced earlier this year that passengers may carry up to 28.5 grams of weed through security. Last year a spokesperson also told the S.F. Weekly that SFO “doesn’t have a specific policy” on cannabis at their security checkpoints and usually defers to local law enforcement. San Jose Mineta International Airport reps didn’t return several calls for comment. But according to their website, marijuana is not allowed inside checked luggage or carry-on bags (although one guy arrested at Mineta earlier this year for smoking weed on a flight clearly gave no fucks). Sneaking weed on planes isn’t new. A survey of 1,001 people by Strato Jets found that a third admitted to bringing something prohibited onboard, with marijuana earning the top spot for most-smuggled item. The staggering array of discreet products like vape pens, THC oils, balms, tinctures and edibles eliminates the need to fly with any flower. But if you’re worried about being caught with anything, apps like Leafly, Nugg, Budly and Eaze will connect you with local dispensaries and delivery services so you can safely stock up at your destination. One dispensary, Airfield Supply Company, is even conveniently located right down the street from Mineta. Some people eat edibles before climbing aboard, often to alleviate anxiety associated with flying. A long flight is an ideal time for consuming edibles because the liver metabolizes and converts regular ol’ THC into its more potent cousin, 11-hydroxy-THC, which does a better job crossing the blood-brain boundary and produces a longer, more intense high than smoking. If you’re new to edibles, maybe don’t try them for the first time on a plane. But if you do, try to have more of a clue about what you’re doing than, say, the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd, and stick to 5 or 10mg an hour until you find your tolerance limit.—Julia Baum

Season’s greetings from THE CONTINENTAL.

These three were happy to show a little skin at SANTACON—it’s just too cold for that up at the North Pole.

SANTA RUN SILICON VALLEY was a bubbly blast for this family.
