I know you're my boss, but how do I avoid talking to you? I'm working away in my cubicle, and not just because I heard your footsteps a few moments ago, but because that's what I was hired to do. I need to get all my assignments done and meet deadlines so I can enjoy my weeklong Christmas break without worrying about anything back at the office. But here you are again, showing me links to the gifts you bought and unloading your personal biz about your future son-in-law and how he's such a deadbeat. Sorry, I can't help with that. I can only code. And the week is almost over, so please, stop taking up an hour of my day. How do I avoid talking to you? Because if I don't get my shit done on time, I'll get in trouble. And who will I have to talk to if I get in trouble? You.

Right after ending a five-year tenure as chair of the Santa Clara County Republican Party, BOB NUÑEZ landed a new gig as acting superintendent of Evergreen School District. Nuñez, who also serves on the Milpitas City Council, accepted the offer a week before Christmas. “I told them I’d be happy to help,” Nuñez says. One of his top priorities over the four to five months he plans to spend as interim will be finding a long-term successor to Superintendent KATHY GOMEZ, who announced her retirement after the election. Nuñez boasts an impressive 40 years in public education. He’s well-liked by labor and known for his coalition building. He gets along with veteran trustee JIM ZITO, a fellow GOP Central Committee member They who’d often clash Did with Gomez. But Nuñez has some black marks on his record.

What?

SEND TIPS TO FLY@ METRONEWS. COM

The career K-12 official left a SoCal school district amid allegations of misspending—charges he’s denied. Years later, he left the East Side Union High School District shrouded by similar claims about his spending habits. While a 2009 audit found nothing illegal, it did show sloppy record-keeping and arguably excessive spending habits. According to the 2,100-page report, Nuñez would routinely charge the cash-strapped district anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 a month on meals, travel and lodging.

But Nuñez says none of those issues came up during the closed-session interview last month. “It’s not that they didn’t know about them,” he tells Fly, “but my sense is that those things have been vetted and they realized that there’s nothing there.” Evergreen Teachers Association President

BRIAN WHEATLEY, who was recently elected trustee in San Jose Unified, seemed ambivalent about Nuñez’s hire. “As interim, it makes sense,” he says, adding that the board “really just needed somebody with experience to get them through the end of the school year.”

PUTTING DOWN ROOTS Veggielution’s Cayce Hill found an affordable place to work despite Silicon Valley’s skyrocketing commercial rents thanks to an initiative that matches non-profits with donated office space.

Sharing Spaces Donated workspace helps Silicon Valley nonprofits avoid displacement BY GRACE HASE

C

AYCE HILL, the executive director of urban farming nonprofit Veggielution, works at a small desk in a centrally located downtown San Jose office. She’s surrounded by a host of colleagues who share virtually all that typical co-workers do—paperclips, spare pens, lunch breaks, professional advice and workaday banter—except for the same employer. That’s because Hill works from NextSpace, a communal hub at the bustling corner of Second and Market streets.

Throughout the week, the nonprofit director rotates her desk with five other Veggielution staffers, which gives everyone a half- to full day to focus on work that doesn’t require their presence at the farm east of the Highway 101-Interstate 680 interchange. Like an increasing number of folks employed by cashstrapped non-profits, the co-working arrangement is their best—and arguably only—option outside of working from home or jockeying for empty tables at crowded coffee shops. “Not everyone on our team has a single-family home that has access to a separate home office situation or quiet space where they can sit and do that kind of work,” Hill

explains. “Because we’re working on an urban farm, there’s not a lot of opportunities for quiet conversations, and holding meetings is a challenge in a rural setting.” Silicon Valley’s headline-grabbing cost of living displaces more than just renters and homeowners: It squeezes out struggling non[-profits, too. But thanks to a national initiative by the All Good Work Foundation, charitable endeavors like Veggielution have a place to take root. The foundation’s social impact residency matches do-gooders with companies willing to donate office space. By giving nonprofits a stable place to work despite soaring commercial real estate costs, the taxexempt community organizations can allocate more of their budget on their core mission. All Good Work launched the program two years ago in New York City and have since expanded to Silicon Valley, securing 32 donated office seats in San Jose, Los Gatos and Sunnyvale. “People are looking for a professional environment that they can call their own,” says Amy Feldman, program director for All Good Work Silicon Valley. “Often it’s

further destabilize communities that are already under pressure for displacement as well.” To help create more stability for Silicon Valley’s public-benefit organizations, Northern California Grantmakers founded the Nonprofit Displacement Project. The regional initiative has helped nonprofits find and afford places to work by aiding in lease negotiations and educating them about paths to ownership. The displacement-prevention project played a key role in bringing All Good Work from the Big Apple to Silicon Valley. Frankfurth says that’s just the beginning. The project is in the early stages of launching a real estate holding entity and exploring more ways to raise money for affordable office space. “It’s something we really need to think about all the time if we want to have strong, stable sustainable non-profit organization,” Frankfurth says. “In our high-price real estate market, how do we support these organizations and make sure that they’re here and doing the important work they need to do?” Part of the answer, she says, is to make sure non-profits are part of the conversation and play an active role in carving out affordable spaces in the community they’re dedicated to serve. “Because we’re in such a dire situation with housing, that’s really where people are paying a lot of attention,” Frankfurth says. “But this impact on non-profits is really important as well because nonprofits provide services to people. They’re cultural institutions, and they are really crucial parts of our communities.” For Hill and her Veggielution cohorts, the perks go beyond the dedicated work station, cost-saving and camaraderie with people from other organizations. It helps them grow the Veggielution name. “When you have access to space like that and you’re connecting with more people, that comes with more ideas and relationships,” Hill says. “I’ve already met more people that learned about our work, and they’ve put forth ideas to me. I think that building relationships is at the heart of what our organizations does. It’s paying for itself.”

flexible seating, and in some cases, it’s a dedicated desk where you sit … every day. It creates more of a routine for the person that’s participating in the program [and] gives them that flexibility to not be worried where they’re going to be doing their work from tomorrow.” As Feldman continues to connect nonprofits like Veggielution with donated workspaces, she says she’s heard dozens of stories from employees at other public-benefit organizations who work nomadically from coffee shop to coffee shop because they’re unable to afford a desk at even a coworking setup. At the downtown San Jose NextSpace, a monthly pass for one desk costs around $250. With the help of grant money from All Good Work, Hill says Veggielution is only on the hook for $50 a month. “It would be much more of a stretch,” Hill says about paying full price. “Those are expenses that nonprofits most often have to come up with unrestricted funding that aren’t always covered in grants. Right now, where we are as an organization, it would be tough.” The shared-space setup doesn’t work for everyone. Non-profits come in all sizes, and some need dedicated programming space that makes coworking ventures unrealistic. Hill says she knows of one San Jose nonprofit that needed more room than just one desk and struggled to find an big enough location for less than $30,000 a month. Northern California Grantmakers, a regional resource-sharing association of philanthropy groups, recently released a report on how the affordability crisis affects 180 nonprofits in Silicon Valley. Nearly a third of non-profits surveyed for the study reported being forced to relocate over the past five years. Some 57 percent of those same groups cited high rents as the reason for displacement. “If non-profits are unable to find affordable space that’s in the community that they need to be, their ability to fulfill their mission is really compromised,” says Sarah Frankfurth, Northern California Grantmakers’ manager of collaborative philanthropy. “There can be really negative impacts on the communities they serve if these institutions go away [and] it can

HANGIN’ AROUND Residents and friends of 414 S. Seventh St., circa 1993. The anti-man sits stereo right.

Animal Houses The anti-man about town recalls the many cozy hovels of his college years BY GARY SINGH

I

N THE FALL of 1990, I moved into a house at 361 N. 10th St. in downtown San Jose and the rest of that decade went either downhill, uphill or sideways, depending on one’s perspective. In various downtown houses, I would spend the next 10 years living a dual life—half academic, half rock & roll dude—with a schizo “never the twain shall meet” identity fueling my creativity.

After leaving Tenth Street, I lived near the SoFA district, then moved to N. Sixth Street, S. Seventh Street, S. Fifth Street, S. Ninth Street and then finally a friend’s living room on Second Street as Y2K emerged. Beethoven lived a similar life in Vienna, moving from place to place. Same thing with Kafka in Prague. So they’ve got my back. Together, all of the dwellings served as fodder for novels I started and failed to finish, so now I’ll reflect on some of the highlights I think influenced columns in

the current era. At 361 N. Tenth, for example, each of the five roommates paid about $200 a month to live in the house. We converted a detached garage into a venue, where bands played at our parties. One band, The Nowhere Men, featured a pre-Rancid Lars Frederiksen along with a singer that now works at Metro. Later, in April of 1991, I moved into a house a few blocks away from the newly-christened SoFA District. My roommates had just been issued an eviction notice right before I moved in, although they didn’t tell me at first. This was back when Cactus Club, Marsugi’s, Ajax, and F/X all hosted bands that would later vault to worldwide stardom. Other groups, usually the ones with no shot at stardom, would use our house for the aftershow parties. The wreckage throughout that subsequent summer rivaled any classic punk rock party house anywhere. A friend next door met her future husband somewhere

in the middle of the whole mess and they are still married to this day. After the sheriff forced us out of that house, I moved in with two female roommates at 144 N. Sixth Street. For two years, they were the sisters I never had. Even if we bickered like siblings, I either had their backs and protected them at shows when we were all wasted together, or I walked them home. Sometimes they had to walk me home. All of this unfolded as I lived a separate life at San Jose State, in the music department, writing C code to make excruciating noise collages on SGI machines, or smashing amplified shopping carts on stage, or studying 20th century avant-garde composers like Edgard Varese, Stockhausen and John Cage—a life unknown to my friends in the rock clubs. By day I sped up drum machines to sound like machine guns or wrote Satanic lyrics for assignments in 16th Century Counterpoint class, and by night I got wasted while Urge Overkill played for 10 of us at Marsugi’s. Then everything came to a glorious peak during three years at 414 S. Seventh Street. Not to blow my own kazoo, but people still talk about that house. If you’ve read Incredibly Strange Music from RE/Search Publications, well, that book should have included our house because zillions of old tacky thrift store LPs graced the walls and we drunkenly blasted the worst easy listening music we could find. This was a block from the SJSU Event Center and we’d charge concertgoers five bucks to park in our front yard so they could avoid the parking garage. As a result, they’d buy us beer in exchange. It was creative urban placemaking long before anyone at City Hall used that term. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I even walked from that house all the way to Spartan Stadium for graduation. After losing various campus jobs and girlfriends and being the last dude left at 414 S. Seventh, I lived on Fifth, Ninth and then Second Street, but emerged with a master’s degree and a traveling life that connected me to music professors, programmers and audio experimenters the world over. Not a moment was wasted, even if I usually was. Everything was preparatory material for the current moment. And the current column. Happy New Year.

Welcome to s THE VENUE Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, will host this year’s College Football Playoff National Championship game— between the Clemson Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

W

ELL, NOW YOU know the way to San Jose, the Capital of Silicon Valley. Welcome. We hope you enjoy your stay, and best of luck to your team.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers are going headto-head once again this year, as they converge in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, Jan. 7. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the title match and the third time Alabama and Clemson have challenged each other on the national stage.

In 2016, Alabama walked off the field with bragging rights; the following year it was Clemson’s turn for glory. Alabama took home the championship trophy again last year when they defeated the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams have plenty to prove. As the Crimson Tide head back to the CFPNC for the fourth straight year, they are seeking their third victory, while their rivals from South Carolina look to even the score at two championship titles apiece. Both the Crimson Tide and the Tigers come to Levi’s Stadium—which is hosting this year’s big game—undefeated in their respective conferences. Levi’s Stadium is observing its own five-year anniversary. Completed in

2014, the stadium is actually located within the city of Santa Clara, just north of San Jose. The home base of the San Francisco 49ers was built with state-of-the-art technology at front of mind. The place is packed to the gills with WiFi ports, which help fans order food and drinks from their smartphones; light rail runs directly to the gates, giving fans a convenient way to get to and from the game; and solar panels are everywhere—soaking up the abundant California sunshine and using it to power the rest of the arena’s cutting-edge tech. Hey. This is Silicon Valley. What else would you expect? When we are not building drones,

smart watches, search engines and self-driving cars, we stay busy in other ways—like enjoying the great food and diverse cultural attractions this region has to offer. While in town for the CFPNC, you’ll have plenty to do, both on and off the field. In addition to the game itself, the event’s organizers are taking over downtown San Jose. There’s the Playoff Fan Central interactive experience at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, a slate of three free concerts in Discovery Meadow (see page 24) and an open-air market and meet-up space, dubbed The Quad, which will fill the historic Plaza de Cesar Chavez. And then there is the rest of

Nope, not that Mr. Rogers. Tennessee-born stand-up comedian Olan Rogers has staked his claim to pop-culture relevance on YouTube with his comedic sketches, as well as his creation of the animated show Final Space on TBS. As 2019 opens, Rogers jumps into a mini-tour, beginning in San Jose, with all new material wrestling with some scary things that have happened to him recently—not Halloween scary exactly, but more like reallife scary, with laughs. (WB)

If you grew up loving Jimmy Eat World, Weezer and Foo Fighters, this party is for you. San Josebased The Last Decade is turning the clock, and the radio dial, back to the late ’90s and early ’00s. Back then, Tom DeLonge was still in Blink-182, Panic! At the Disco had yet to metastasize into the Brian Urie show, and Live 105 was still Live 105. From “SemiCharmed LIfe” to “Flagpole Sitta,” TLD breathes new life into the songs you listened to on the way to school. So welcome 2019 by remembering the good old days—you know, when bands still put live drums on tape. (WB)

SUPER DIAMOND Sat, 9:30pm, $25+ Club Fox, Redwood City Yes, the songs of Neil Diamond have been blaring from radios and overhead grocery store speakers since the days of Shakespeare (or so it seems). But Super Diamond, the Bay Area-based Neil Diamond tribute band, has been around almost as long. With frontman Randy Cordeiro, SD was part of the first big tribute-band wave way back in the early 1990s (talk about “Forever in Blue Jeans”) and has been instrumental in guiding Neil’s music through the desert of lameness back into the garden of cool. They count, among their many fans, Neil himself, so they have to be doing something right. (WB)

THIS CHARMING BAND Sat, 8pm, $12+ The Ritz, San Jose British mope rockers The Smiths lasted only about five years (which, if you think about it, is a heroically long time to have to tolerate the ridiculously glorious lead singer Morrissey). San Francisco’s This Charming Band has been paying loving tribute to The Smiths for about three times as long, albeit with a rotating cast of characters. Smiths obsessives are wonderful, if a bit weird. If you’re the kind of person who danced to “Girlfriend in a Coma” at your wedding, then this is probably the best chance you’ll ever get to experience Smithsmania live. (WB)

There are a number of compelling threads to follow in the narrative arc of local singer and songwriter Tess Dunn. There’s her age (she’s just turned 23), the amount of music she’s made (four EPs and counting), and her tenacity (she’s done all this while battling cystic fibrosis). But all that misses the most critical point: She makes great music, and she’s only getting better. On her latest collection of tunes, which she recorded as T3TRA, Dunn takes a sharp left turn from her punky past, dialing down the guitars and live drums and replacing them with moody synths and computerized beats. (NV)

Known for his over-the-top party-starting persona, Lil Jon is a DJ, producer, emcee and hype man all in one. The Atlanta rapper got his start as the frontman for Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz— pioneering and popularizing a loud, brash, club-oriented style of hip-hop known as crunk. Lil Jon secured his place in pop culture history in the mid-’00s through iconic collaborations with Usher (“Yeah!”) and LMFAO (“Shots”), but the King of Crunk is still at it. He closed out 2018 by teaming up with the Kool-Aid Man for a totally bananas viral marketing clip, “All I Really Want for Christmas.” (NV)

If you call the South Bay home, your life has been enriched by Latinx culture. metroactive ARTS

IN THE BEGINNING Artists Tracey Adams and Virginia Folkestad ponder the earliest stages of life with their collaborative ‘Primordial Soup.’

Amoeba Arts New SJICA exhibit, ‘Primordial Soup,’ explores the origins of organic life BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

W

ALK THROUGH THE black curtain behind the back gallery at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and you’ll get a taste of Tracey Adams and Virginia Folkestad’s “Primordial Soup.” They’ve created a prehistoric, pantrysized diorama that depicts the beginning of life on Earth (or, at least, one postulation of it). Tendrils hang down everywhere. Some float from above like chandeliers at an octopus’ dinner party. Others jut straight out of the walls. Amoebashaped critters are fixed in place but

the squiggles on their backs suggest a scurrying motion as if they had unfinished business to carry out. Electronic music, composed by Jennifer Trust Wilkerson, drifts in and pulses out, summoning up an underwater version of a Dead Can Dance instrumental that’s washed up on the shoreline. This forest of primeval seaweed is all Illuminated under a blacklight. To the human eye, the walls are a dull, sepulchral yellow. But lift your camera lens up to these aqueous limbs and their multifarious offshoots and suddenly everything fluoresces. The walls themselves turn a rich shade of magenta or a deep maritime

blue. Adams lives near the ocean and says it’s her muse, “Imagery from the ocean has always interested me but in the abstract way.” For this exhibit, she was inspired by two distinct yet ocean-adjacent sources—a professor at UC Santa Cruz and the jellyfish swimming and fluorescing at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. “I got some fluorescent paint, put it on my printing table, and I started dipping black paper into it, creating veiny, arterial shapes and lines and they were beautiful,” she says. The professor, Dr. Robert Linington, has since moved his lab to Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. But before he left, Adams had a chance to visit him in Santa Cruz, where he and his colleagues study ocean specimens. The lab’s ongoing research objectives are “the discovery of new compound classes for drug development against pathogenic bacteria, cancer and global health parasites.” She toured the facility and, after returning for a second visit, photographed some of the microscopic imagery collected in stacks and stacks of Petri dishes. In a serendipitous convergence of art and

science, Adams found that some of the shapes she discovered amongst the specimens were similar to ones she’d previously incorporated into her paintings. The artist didn’t make this claim herself but the circumstantial evidence does seem to confirm the existence of the unconscious as its drawn inexplicably and repeatedly towards its own peculiar obsessions. Adams considers herself to be a two dimensional artist, a painter who draws and does printmaking. She asked Folkestad, a sculptor, to participate when “Primordial Soup” was conceived of as an immersive, three-dimensional installation. For about a year, they exchanged ideas about what they hoped to accomplish. She explained that during their process they experimented with different materials and shapes asking themselves, “How do we get your work to integrate with mine? How do we merge them so it's cohesive?” At first, Folkestad suggested that Adams work with an insulating foam that expands as you spray it. But she found it “grotesque” and hated it. “Virginia was encouraging me to let it dry and sculpt it. I was doing that and sanding it and it was all over everything. I said, ‘We can't do this anymore. This is not who I am.’” After that, Adams got out those fluorescent cans of paint and began to figure out what worked for her practice. Stepping inside “Primordial Soup,” you find yourself in a contemplative space. Adams says she’s an introvert who frequently meditates, and that’s what she hoped the installation would be. She thought that if it was going to be successful, it would take “a little bit of steering through the music, the auditory senses and the visual senses, into the quiet and the darkness of the room, that people would go inward and find whatever it is that they would find.” Like Dr. Linington in his work to find cures for diseases in the ocean, Adams and Folkestad’s exhibit makes use of ocean imagery to soothe the soul. It makes sense, both logically and intuitively, to seek out a small temple filled with offerings to our original place, the primordial soup.

metroactive FILM

Dick Movie Adam McKay’s biopic ‘Vice’ is too soon for comedy, too silly for tragedy BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

I

T’S ASSUMED THAT a Dinesh D’Souza documentary is the antithesis of what Michael Moore does. In fact, Adam McKay’s Vice is much more like a polarity reversal of D’Souza than the actual Moore. It’s so very low. Vice is in deep trouble from its first title card. What we’re about to see is a true story, we read. It was nearly impossible to unearth documents on the deeply secretive Dick Cheney, vice president of the US 2001-2009… “but we did our fucking best.”

You hear this line from your employee, your kid, or your students— let alone from a true-life movie—and you know that where you’re about to tread is going to mess up your shoes. Certainly McKay’s star, Christian Bale reached a remarkable act of likeness, porking up in the same way he starved himself to a silhouette for The Mechanic. Bale mastered the truculent, side-of-the mouth snarl that the old oil man wears, and that grunt that he supposes makes him sound like John Wayne. Vice’s shape has a familiar one in scripts lately, where we circle around from a grabber incident (in this case, Cheney receiving the news of the 9/11 attacks) to a long first act flashback that shows how we

got to this point. Movies made this way seem like they have a half-hour long pre-title sequence. McKay stresses emptiness from the beginning to the finale, when Cheney’s diseased heart is scooped out in front of us, as he endured that rare heart-transplant given to a 72 year old. It doesn’t like Cheney, but Vice isn’t fond of most of the working class either; commencing with cowboys in a Wyoming beer bar yee-hawing over a game of dice. Later on, a group of linemen stand about, unfeelingly, as one of their colleagues who has just fallen off a ladder lies sprawled on the ground with a compound fracture. Cheney is, “what we’d call in today’s parlance, a dirtbag,” the mysterious omniscient narrator (Jesse Plemons of Breaking Bad) intones. He partied his way out of Yale and got busted for drunk driving. All it takes is one stern talking to by his helmet-haired wife Lynn (Amy Adams) and he’s straightening up and taking on Washington D.C. Cheney goes to work with Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell, miscast once again) who tells him to “Keep your mouth shut, do what you’re told, and always be loyal.”

THE PRINCE In ‘Vice,’ Christian Bale plays Dick Cheney, our most Machiavellian veep.

In 1968, the architects of this century’s many dilemmas were already gathering, from Roger Ailes on down. After some redacted years at Halliburton, Cheney becomes the veep pick of George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell). Rockwell is actually the best piece of casting in the film, with the most humor and slobbiness, and the keenest bits of tragic political vaudeville: studying a piece of fried chicken as if it were a chess problem. If this movie had a crux, this is where that crux would be. Here, Cheney takes what looks like a dull backseat job from a none-too-bright princeling president and turns it into fiefdom. By some accounts, Cheney was in full control of every shameful deed perpetuated by the 43rd regime. Sticking to the playbook he deployed in The Big Short, McKay tries to turn this tale into a post-moden carnival, with a parody of a happy ending for the country (literally rolling the credits, half an hour in). There is a quick flash of Marvel comics. A smirking waiter (Alfred Molina) at a posh restaurant offers Cheney and his cronies a list of extrajudicious tortures. Confessing an inability to depict Lynn Cheney stiffening Dick for his tasks ahead, as if in a play, the film has Lynn and Dick recite some Shakespeare. And yet this type of artifice is even less natural than the unironic sub-House of Cards bad-political-movie talk that makes up the rest of Vice. (Example, at a swank ball: “Half the room wants to be us, the other half hates us.”) Nicholas Britell’s bombastic soundtrack has 10 times the self-importance of the trumpet fanfares before a Sunday morning TV pundit-jamboree. Misanthropy rarely gets this unfunny. Here, even Cheney’s sullen wiliness looks uninspired. His political feats aren’t more complex than his favorite avocation as an angler: all he needed for success was to stand around in icy waters long enough to fool some poor fish. In its final ironic use of the already ironic “America” from West Side Story, Vice flaunts its repellent spirit. “You chose me,” Cheney says, and the joke’s on us. If it’s supposed to be comedy, it’s too soon. If it’s supposed to be tragedy, it’s too frivolous.

The 22-year-old Canadian singer and songwriter Cara first made waves with her breakout single, “Here.” The song—an introvert’s anthem, which recalls the dark piano textures of Fiona Apple’s “Criminal”—is a smoky and soulful shout-out to all the wallflowers at the party. Those who don’t know the track may recognize Cara from her collaboration with Logic. She was featured, along with Khalid, on Logic’s 2017 hit, "1-800-273-8255.”

Speaking of Logic, the Los Angelesbased rapper is also in town for the concert series. Logic headlines the second evening of music—joining retro R&B revivalist Leon Bridges and Kendrick Lamar collaborator and labelmate Jay Rock on Saturday. Bridges is currently on tour behind his acclaimed sophomore album, Good Thing, which has drawn praise for its savvy blend of retro R&B tones and modern storytelling. Jay Rock, who’s verse on Kendrick Lamar’s “Money Trees” earned him a Grammy nod as a featured artist, released his second studio album, Redemption, this summer. The record features two singles currently in rotation on hip-hop radio—the Lamar-featuring “Win” and the Jeremih-featuring “Tap Out.” OneRepublic, The Regrettes and Ellie Goulding close out the threenight run of shows on Sunday. Perhaps best known for their massive 2007 single, “Apologize,” OneRepublic have also collaborated

with Logic. Earlier this year, the Colorado-bred band released “Start Again,” which features the rapper. The song is also on the soundtrack of the Netflix original drama, 13 Reasons Why. The Regrettes, a punky femalefronted trio from L.A. have been garnering plenty of favorable press from their hometown papers, the Los Angeles Times and the LA Weekly, as well as from national outlets, like Rolling Stone. Goulding, who has three certified platinum albums to her name, comes to town on the heels of her latest single—an infectious collaboration with Diplo and Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): No one has resisted

the force of gravity with more focus than businessman Roger Babson (1875–1967). He wrote an essay entitled "Gravity: Our Enemy Number One," and sought to develop anti-gravity technology. His Gravity Research Foundation gave awards to authentic scientists who advanced the understanding of gravity. If that organization still existed and offered prizes, I'm sure that researchers of the Aries persuasion would win them all in 2019. For your tribe, the coming months should feature lots of escapes from heaviness, including soaring flights and playful levity and lofty epiphanies.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The night parrots of Australia are so elusive that there was a nearly six-decade stretch when no human saw a single member of the species. But in 2013, after searching for 15 years, photographer John Young spotted one and recorded a 17-second video. Since then, more sightings have occurred. According to my astrological vision, your life in 2019 will feature experiences akin to the story of the night parrot's reappearance. A major riddle will be at least partially solved. Hidden beauty will materialize. Long-secret phenomena will no longer be secret. A missing link will re-emerge. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Millions of years ago, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, and North and South America were smooshed together. Earth had a single land mass, the supercontinent Pangea. Stretching across its breadth was a colossal feature, the Central Pangean Mountains. Eventually, though, Europe and America split apart, making room for the Atlantic Ocean and dividing the Central Pangean range. Today the Scottish Highlands and the Appalachian Mountains are thousands of miles apart, but once upon a time they were joined. In 2019, Gemini, I propose that you look for metaphorical equivalents in your own life. What disparate parts of your world had the same origin? What elements that are now divided used to be together? Re-establish their connection. Get them back in touch with each other. Be a specialist in cultivating unity. CANCER (June 21-July 22): 2019 will be an excellent

time to swim in unpolluted rivers, utter sacred oaths near beautiful fountains, and enjoy leisurely saunas that help purify your mind and body. You are also likely to attract cosmic favor if you cry more than usual, seek experiences that enhance your emotional intelligence, and ensure that your head respectfully consults with your heart before making decisions. Here's another way to get on life's good side: cultivate duties that consistently encourage you to act out of love and joy rather than out of guilt and obligation.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Here are four key questions I

hope you'll meditate on throughout 2019: 1. What is love? 2. What kind of love do you want to receive? 3. What kind of love do you want to give? 4. How could you transform yourself in order to give and receive more of the love you value most? To spur your efforts, I offer you these thoughts from teacher David R. Hawkins: "Love is misunderstood to be an emotion; actually, it is a state of awareness, a way of being in the world, a way of seeing oneself and others."

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): "Most living things begin

in the absence of light," writes Virgo author Nancy Holder. "The vine is rooted in the earth; the fawn takes form in the womb of the doe." I'll remind you that your original gestation also took place in the dark. And I foresee a metaphorically comparable process unfolding for you in 2019. You'll undergo an incubation period that may feel cloaked and mysterious. That's just as it should be: the best possible circumstances for the vital new part of your life that will be growing. So be patient. You'll see the tangible results in 2020.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Many plants that modern Americans regard as weeds were regarded as tasty food by Native Americans. A prime example is the cattail, which grows wild in wetlands. Indigenous people ate the rootstock, stem, leaves and flower spike. I propose that we use this scenario to serve as a metaphor for some of your potential opportunities in 2019. Things you've regarded as useless or irrelevant or inconvenient could be revealed as assets. Be alert for the possibility of such shifts. Here's advice from

By ROB BREZSNY week of January 2

Ralph Waldo Emerson: "What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered."

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The slow, gradual, incremental approach will be your magic strategy in 2019. Being persistent and thorough as you take one step at a time will provide you with the power to accomplish wonders. Now and then, you may be tempted to seek dramatic breakthroughs or flashy leaps of faith, and there may indeed be one or two such events mixed in with your steady rhythms. But for the most part, your glory will come through tenacity. Now study this advice from mystic Meister Eckhart: "Wisdom consists in doing the next thing you have to do, doing it with your whole heart, and finding delight in doing it." SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian

polymath Piet Hein wrote a poem in which he named the central riddle of his existence. "A bit beyond perception's reach, / I sometimes believe I see / That life is two locked boxes / Each containing the other's key." I propose that we adopt this scenario to symbolize one of the central riddles of your existence. I'll go further and speculate that in 2019 one of those boxes will open as if through a magical fluke, without a need for the key. This mysterious blessing won't really be a magical fluke, but rather a stroke of well-deserved and hardearned luck that is the result of the work you've been doing to transform and improve yourself.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): What themes and

instruments do people least want to hear in a piece of music? Composer Dave Solder determined that the worst song ever made would contain bagpipes, cowboy music, tubas, advertising jingles, operatic rapping and children crooning about holidays. Then he collaborated with other musicians to record such a song. I suspect that as you head into 2019, it'll be helpful to imagine a metaphorically comparable monstrosity: a fantastic mess that sums up all the influences you'd like to avoid. With that as a vivid symbol, you'll hopefully be inspired to avoid allowing any of it to sneak into your life in the coming months.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In Canada, it's illegal

to pretend to practice witchcraft. It's fine to actually do witchcraft, however. With that as our inspiration, I advise you to be rigorous about embodying your authentic self in 2019. Make sure you never lapse into merely imitating who you are or who you used to be. Don't fall into the trap of caring more about your image than about your actual output. Focus on standing up for what you really mean rather than what you imagine people expect from you. The coming months will be a time when you can summon pure and authoritative expressions of your kaleidoscopic soul.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the 18th century,

Benjamin Franklin was a Founding Father who played a key role in getting the United States up and running. He wasn't happy that the fledgling nation chose the bald eagle as its animal symbol. The supposedly majestic raptor is lazy, he wrote. It doesn't hunt for its own food, but steals grub obtained by smaller birds of prey. Furthermore, bald eagles are cowardly, Franklin believed. Even sparrows may intimidate them. With that as our theme, Pisces, I invite you to select a proper creature to be your symbolic ally in 2019. Since you will be building a new system and establishing a fresh power base, you shouldn't pick a critter that's merely glamorous. Choose one that excites your ambition and animates your willpower.

ADVICE GODDESS

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

I know humans are typically your subject, but this is a relationship question, so I hope you’ll consider answering it. I have a new puppy (an eight-pound terrier mutt). I eventually want her to sleep in bed with me. However, she’s not toilettrained yet, so I “crate” her at night in the laundry room (in a small dog cage). She cries all night. It’s heartbreaking. Please help!—Sleepless in Dogtown We call dogs “man’s best friend” and treat them just like our human best friends—if at 11pm you say to your BFF, “Wow, wouldja look at the time,” gently remove the beer from her hand, and usher her to her cage in your laundry room. Crate training, recommended by vets, breeders and the American Kennel Club, involves confining a dog to a “den”—a cage or gated-off area—with her bed and her favorite toys to dismember. However, the crate is not supposed to be used for punishment—as a sort of Doggy San Quentin—but, say, for times you can’t watch her to keep her from using the $3,000 leather couch as a chew toy or the antique Persian rug as an opulently colored hand-knotted toilet. The problem you’re experiencing in crating your dog at night comes out of doggy-human coevolution. Anthrozoologist John W. S. Bradshaw explains that over generations, we humans bred dogs to be emotionally dependent on us. Not surprisingly, dogs miss their owners, sometimes desperately, when they are separated from them—and other dogs don’t seem to fill the emotional void. In one of Bradshaw’s studies—of 40 Labrador retrievers and border collies—“well over 50 percent of the Labs and almost half of the collies showed some kind of separation distress” when left alone. Fortunately, puppies can be trained to understand that picking up your

car keys isn’t human-ese for “Goodbye forever!” Bradshaw’s advice in Dog Sense: “Pick up keys, go to door, praise dog.” Next: Pick up keys. Go out door. Come right back in. Praise dog.Go out for increasingly longer intervals, and “go back a stage” if the dog shows anxiety. And good news for you: You probably don’t have to spoon with your dog to keep her from feeling separation distress at night. My tiny Chinese crested now sleeps (uh, snores like a cirrhotic old wino) on my pillow, resting her tiny snout on my neck. However, back before she had her bathroom business under control, I went through the crying-at-night-in-the-crate thing (actually a gated alcove by my office). I felt like the second coming of Cruella de Vil. Then I remembered something about dogs: they have a sense of smell on the level of superhero powers. Maybe my dog didn’t have to be in bed; maybe near bed would do. I snagged a big seethrough plastic container (maybe four feet long and three feet high) that my neighbors were tossing out. At bedtime, I put it next to my bed and put my dog in it with her bed and a pee pad. She turned around three times, curled up and went to sleep—after giving me a look I’m pretty sure said, “Hey, next time you’re gonna throw me in ‘the hole,’ gimme some notice, and I’ll menace the mailman with a sharpened Nylabone.”

I keep seeing men pushing dogs in baby strollers and carrying dogs as women do. What's going on? An epidemic of sissified men? If I ever did this, I’d hope my family would have me committed.—Disturbed Thankfully, the Centers for Disease Control lists no reports of an outbreak of Pomeranians poking their little heads out of man purses. However, you’re right; dog strollers are increasingly becoming a thing. As for why this is, think Field of Dreams: “If you build it”— and sell it at Petco, people will buy it so they won’t have to leave their old, tired and/or disabled doggy home alone. As for what pushing a doggy buggy says about a man, anthropologists and zoologists would call this a “costly

signal.” This is an extravagant or risky trait or behavior that comes with a substantial price—which suggests that the quality being displayed is for real. An example of this is conspicuous waste—signaling vast wealth by using $100 bills as birdcage liners. Accordingly, it takes a man with masculinity to burn to not fear putting off all those women who previously announced to their friends, “We want sensitive men! Though not, you know, ‘put their Shih Tzu in a baby stroller’ sensitive.”
