in their background that hindered or advanced their early and current success—the women answered questions from the audience. About 100 people attended the panel. Some of the women on the panel surmounted difficult conditions in their childhood on their way to success. Duong and her parents, for example, came to the U.S. as

A former downtown Morgan Hill gym owner convicted of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women he trained over the course of several years faced his victims at an Aug. 25 sentencing hearing. David Wolfsmith, 51, manipulated, shamed and groomed his victims in order to gain control over them before physically abusing them, according to several accusers who spoke or submitted written statements at the hearing. The women described a “cultlike” atmosphere when they exercised at Wolfpak, Wolfsmith’s former gym at the corner of Monterey Road and Third Street. While coaching the women and other Wolfpak clients, Wolfsmith often referred to himself as a “vessel of God” and claimed he knew more than the athletes, their families and doctors about their health and their own bodies. After establishing a pattern of fear and intimidation, Wolfsmith physically assaulted the victims while insisting the contact was intended to measure their fitness progress or help them recover from injuries or exercise, according to four victims’ accounts. Wolfsmith pleaded guilty June 23 to

Some of South County’s top female leaders offered some insight into how they have achieved success despite the odds against them, and some advice on how women can

continue the struggle toward full equality and acceptance at a “Leadership Professionals Panel” in Morgan Hill Aug. 24. The panel, held at Morgan Hill City Council Chambers, was part of Women’s Week and the celebration of Women’s Equality Day. The panel, and other Women’s Week events, were sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Morgan Hill.

“We’ve got a long ways to go in some ways, but we need to appreciate what we’ve achieved,” said U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, one of five panelists at the Aug. 24 event. Lofgren, of San Jose, is a Democrat who represents California’s 19th Congressional District, which includes Morgan Hill. Lofgren was joined on the panel by Lesley Miles, a local architect and coowner of Weston Miles

South County novelist Janneke Jobsis Brown will host an author reading from her first novel “Following Shadows,” which is the first book in her “Finding Home” series at 4 p.m. Sept. 17 at BookSmart of Morgan Hill. Brown, of Gilroy, who previously owned a private psychotherapy practice in Morgan Hill, writes of love, intergenerational trauma and the ultimate sacrifices a family makes spanning generations,

according to the event announcement. “In this Historical Family Saga, a family is transformed when elderly Jakob Vanderveer tells of his lost childhood during WWII, in the Japanese Concentration Camps of Indonesia,” according to the release. Brown, who was born in the Netherlands but also spent her childhood in Iran, Utah and Texas, is a psychotherapist now living in Gilroy. “For 60 years after World War II, death

has haunted the entire Vanderveer family,” reads the book summary. “Death lives within the soul of Jakob Vanderveer who vowed to be a silent keeper of secrets. He believes hiding his boyhood trauma would be the best way to raise a loving, safe family.” NYT Best selling author coming to Booksmart on Sept. 8 Rene Denfeld, author of “The Child Finder,” and New York Times Bestselling novel, “The

Enchanted,” will host her special event at 7 p.m., Sept. 8 at BookSmart of Morgan Hill, Friday. First hour is free, or join in a ticketed after-party with desserts, local port and intimate conversation with the author. Denfeld brings her own personal experience as an investigator to her novels. “The Child Finder” features Naomi, a private investigator of missing children, who is on a case that triggers her own troubled and cloudy memories when she was

found alone at the age of 8, never to know what happened to her. A new case searching the snow-covered wilderness in rural Oregon reawakens lost memories as a child’s life hangs in the balance. “The Child Finder” was inspired by the author’s work as well as foster adoptive parenting, and explores themes of survival, resilience and prevention. COMMUNITY Mathematics Institute castle awaits construction activity CITY STAFF REMAINS IN THE DARK Michael Moore Editor

Once highly anticipated for its potential to bring visitors and economic development dollars to the region, electronics retail executive John Fry’s castle/clubhouse project has seen little activity on the east Morgan Hill property. Since 2014, Fry has had permission from the City of Morgan Hill, PG&E and other regulators to begin pouring the foundation for a 170,000-square-foot replica of a Spanish castle on the 192-acre Foothill Avenue estate. The building is proposed to serve as the headquarters for the American Institute of Mathematics and a clubhouse for Fry’s private, 7,360-yard Institute Golf Course. But although city officials have granted four construction permits related to Fry’s property since 2011—which are still active—no inspections have been scheduled or performed on any of the permits, according to Morgan Hill Building Official Eric Blomquist. These permissions

include a foundation permit issued by City Hall in 2011, two grading permits (one issued in 2007 and one in 2015) and a retaining wall permit dating back to 2012, Blomquist added. City building permits are active for 180 days after their initial application, but the applicant can request extensions for 180 days at a time, Blomquist explained. All four of Fry’s permits have been extended multiple times and remain active. Fry, an owner of Fry’s Electronics, once envisioned opening his Morgan Hill golf course to thousands of visitors as the site of the Frys.com Open, a professional golf tournament that enjoyed a four-year run at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin beginning in 2010. The castle/clubhouse was a crucial prerequisite to moving the tournament to Fry’s property. The tournament moved to a course in Napa in 2014, and Frys. com gave up its sponsorship of the event in 2015. At that time, Fry’s executives said they are still planning to build the castle/clubhouse in Morgan Hill and host events there. Since its founding

in 2007, the Frys.com Open raised millions of dollars for charity. The Institute castle project has also been touted as a center for intellectual and scientific activity as the future headquarters for AIM, a nonprofit think tank cofounded by Fry. AIM’s headquarters are currently located on East Brokaw Road in San Jose, according to the website aimath.org. Fry’s Electronics spokesman Manuel Valerio did not return phone calls from the Times seeking an update on the castle project. Assistant City Manager Leslie Little said city planning and building staff have heard “nothing” from the developer regarding any potential changes to or stoppage of his original plan for the AIM castle. In 2014, Fry, city staff and PG&E came to a resolution on how to safely commingle the castle project with a 34-inch gas line owned by the utility company on the east side of Fry’s Foothill Avenue property. The three parties agreed on additional safety enhancements for the project, and the site was cleared for construction.

The castle/clubhouse was a crucial prerequisite to moving the tournament to Fry’s property

Record heat hits South County for holiday If temperatures in the high 90s and low 100s weren’t hot enough for area residents over the last few days, a South County scorcher of epic proportions is forecast for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend. The National Weather Service’s 7-day forecast, running through Sept. 5, has possible recordbreaking heat hitting the Santa Clara Valley with temperatures peaking at 108 degrees on Sept. 1 and 109 degrees on Sept. 2. There is little let-up of this early September

swelter with Sunday through Monday highs forecast at 101 degrees and Tuesday dipping to the upper-90s. “(Morgan Hill will reach) triple digits by Friday and then continuing warm temperatures into weekend,” said NWS meteorologist Scott Rowe earlier in the week when residents felt the burn with highs reaching 103 degrees. NWS keeps records for the highest historical temperatures for Gilroy (not Morgan Hill) dating back to

1957. According to those stats, the record high for Aug. 28 was 106 in 1981 and for Aug. 29 is 102 in 2005. “(Highs) fluctuate, especially where a ridge of high pressure will set up along the West Coast,” Rowe explained. “It’s not out of the ordinary being this hot this time of year.” Morgan Hill Unified School District public schools have a scheduled three-day holiday weekend as South County will continue to sizzle through that time period.

Two MHUSD schools gain $40K in grants Martin Murphy Middle School and Los Paseos Elementary School were each awarded $20,000 from the City of San Jose's District 2 Participatory Budgeting process, according to an Aug. 23 announcement from Morgan Hill Unified School District. San Jose District 2 community members submitted projects to the City of San Jose that would create positive improvements within their neighborhoods.

Martin Murphy and Los Paseos parents banded together to submit a proposal that would benefit both schools. Los Paseos will use the grant money to modernize their library, while Martin Murphy will install a new digital marquee on the corner of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Avenida Espana. “We are incredibly thankful to our parents for spearheading the petition process and to our community

for supporting our neighborhood schools and the students that we serve,” said Martin Murphy Principal Alex Aasen. “Being in such close proximity to each other, we work closely with Los Paseos every day, and I know both of our schools are looking forward to bringing these new improvements to campus.” Library enhancements and the new marquee are slated to be completed by next school year.

OPINION LETTERS Gav bond is illegal

The Gavilan College Board of Trustees is considering putting another bond before the voters in 2018. At the Aug. 8 board meeting the trustees approved an agreement with True North Research Inc. to provide a general obligation bond measure pre-election survey. I have always been a supporter of educational issues at all levels. However, I have also always believed very strongly that all elected officials must abide by the law to earn the trust of the voters who elected them. With the previous bond (Measure E), the Gavilan Board of Trustees violated Prop 39 by illegally spending bond funds to set up the South Bay Public Safety Consortium (the Academy) at the satellite site in Coyote Valley. Because Administration of Justice was not included in the bond, spending bond funds on Police Training Facilities was a clear violation of Prop 39. Prop 39 bond measures must list the specific projects to be funded. The South Bay Public Safety Consortium was never on the list of specific projects presented and approved by the voters. The evidence that Prop 39 was violated, I believe, is overwhelming. Because of the controversy over the misuse of Measure E bond funds, convincing the voters to support another bond will be a very difficult task.

Celebrate California First Responder Day Sept. 23 Buffer your residence FIRE MARSHAL DWIGHT GOOD

E

arlier this year, I joined as a coauthor of Senate Resolution 40, which recognizes Sept. 23, 2017, as California First Responder Day. The resolution acknowledges the dedication, sacrifice and excellence of emergency first responders, whether they are peace officers, firefighters or emergency medical personnel. In the face of catastrophic emergencies, these individuals bravely run into danger, while many run the other way. The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, were unlike anything that this country had ever seen and hundreds of first responders rushed to the scene, many sacrificing their own lives to save and protect victims of this terrible tragedy. Of the 2,977 victims killed on 9/11, 411 of those were first responders. Here in California, we rely heavily on our first responders following each and every natural disaster that occurs. Over the past year, the state has been dramatically impacted by the forces of Mother Nature. In every event, Californians and those visiting our great state have been able to count on the bravery of first responders, who rush to the scene to help those in need or prevent the disaster from spreading. These are members of our own communities who, day after day, put their lives

on the line to aid and protect us in some of the worst of circumstances.

Californians and those visiting our great state have been able to count on the bravery of first responders, who rush to the scene to help those in need or prevent the disaster from spreading. This year, on Sept. 23, I encourage you all to join me in expressing gratitude for first responders in our communities. Whether it be a family member, friend, neighbor or stranger, each and every one of these brave men and women deserve our respect, admiration and thanks! Sen. Bill Monning represents the 17th State Senate District, which includes all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties.

FROM THE WEB Re: ‘Victims: Wolfsmith ‘manipulated’ so he could abuse’ It has been an extremely long road for each of the 13 victims we know about and we, the Morgan Hill community, are very satisfied with the outcome. Sometimes you have to look at it with a cold empirical eye and determine how it’s likely to play out. If there’s someone who has been victimized or potentially think they have, we’re encouraging them to come forward even if this sentence was handed out. “Jason Boyarski” via morganhilltimes.com

This guest view is part of a periodic series on tips to make your property and family safe for wildfire season, which will continue through September in Santa Clara County. uring a wildfire, thousands of windblown embers may pelt your house like hail during a storm. Many of the embers that strike the side of the house can fall to the ground and accumulate next to your home. If your neighborhood is asked to evacuate as wildfire approaches, the embers can lie there, glowing unattended for hours or even days. If the embers are in contact with a wood or other combustible material sided house, or something that can ignite in the flowerbed, your home could be in jeopardy. The vegetation, landscape materials and other items located adjacent to your home have critical influence on house survival during wildfire and ember attack. Homeowners living in high fire hazard areas need to create a “noncombustible (or low combustible) area” within three to five feet of their houses: • Do use hard surfaces such as concrete, brick and rock • Do use gravel or rock mulches • Do use irrigated herbaceous plants such as annual and perennial flowers and groundcovers • Do use short deciduous shrubs (but don’t locate them in front of foundation vents) • Don’t locate the firewood pile or other combustible materials such as lumber in this area Having a noncombustible (or low combustible) area next to your home is an important part of protecting it from wildfire. Don’t wait—take action now before the embers arrive.

Local artist spreads the love across the nation NATIONWIDE TOUR TOUCHES LIVES THROUGH ART Scott Forstner Reporter

Mark William Bridwell November 27, 1949 - August 6, 2017

Special to the Times

Something inside of local artist Debbie Arambula, of Morgan Hill-based Heartworks Studio, kept telling her she needed to hit the road and spread love through artwork. So, the 57-year-old grandmother set out on her “What the World Needs Now” tour with a “Spread the Love” mantra—hitting 23 states over a three and a half month period. Traveling in a 32-foot recreational vehicle with a 16-foot trailer filled with art supplies, Arambula—along with husband/production manager Steve and daughter/ vice president Katie— began her self-funded, nationwide tour. At each stop, “I would randomly invite people to participate in doing a heart on the canvas,” explained Arambula of her mission. Using a large white canvas for her patriotic piece, titled “What the World Needs Now,” Arambula had individuals select a heart cutout and glue it to the canvas which resembled an American flag with a world globe in the top left corner. Arambula has collected various artists’ pallette tray liners and shaped the textured

wax paper into hearts over the last 21 years. “Each person selects the heart and I give them the glue and they select a spot where they glue it on and then I ask them three things: 1) acknowledge something you’re grateful for; 2) think of a dream or goal they want to make and rededicate themselves to it; and 3) think of something that they can do to make a better world,” the local heart-artist detailed. Along the way, Arambula made stops at nine festivals as well as countless RV campsites, town squares, parks and a few historical landmarks. She would break out her easel, heart box and other artworks—and begin to spread the love. Among her pitstops were Scotsdale, Ariz.; New Orleans, La.; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New Jersey; and Maryland. One of the most memorable was in Washington, D.C. She set up in front of the White House and the Lincoln Memorial, which “was intense because there were just thousands of people there,” Arambula said. But when she saw a group of military veterans walking by, admiring her art, Arambula invited them over and had one man in his 70s glue a heart on the canvas. “They were emotionally

HEART OF A NATION An autographed print of local artist Debbie Arambula’s “What the World Needs Now” piece that she made while touring the country. struck by the experience,” said the Morgan Hill resident, who grew up in Almaden, attended Presentation High School and moved to Morgan Hill at age 14. She lives in Morgan Hill with her husband of 38 years and has three adult children and one granddaughter. Arambula ended the “What the World Needs Now” tour in Campbell, where she owned an art gallery for 13 years. This was her fifth tour since 2013 when she realized that her art made people happy and she wanted to touch as many people as she could across the nation. “I just felt that I had to close my gallery and get out there,” said Arambula,

who each time had a community-art piece that she would then sell to help fund her next tour. “If I make people happy with my art, I can make some sort of difference.” Other works she completed on tour with the help of strangers and later sold were titled “Living the Dream” and “United We Stand.” The most recent piece involved more than 243 participants. “I’m so happy with the finished product,” asid Arambula, who already has planned out her next tour beginning at the rib cook-off in Reno and culminating at the Taste of Morgan Hill. “This tour is complete and I can’t wait to start the next one.”

The only reason you cared (for us) was so you could pull us down deeper into the darkness VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN COURT AS ‘JANE DOE NO. 1’

Convicted sex offender hears from victims Wolfsmith, 1

Seven-year prison term Twelve of the counts Wolfsmith admitted to are for felony sexual battery by fraudulent purpose. Another count is a felony related to a victim who was a child at the time of the abuse. Morgan Hill police arrested him in April 2016, after officers investigated the initial victims’ accusations. After hearing four of the victims speak at the Aug. 25 hearing and accepting numerous other written statements from other women Wolfsmith abused, Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Duong sentenced him to seven years in prison. The prosecutor and defense attorneys previously agreed to the terms of the sentence. Wolfsmith, who appeared in court Aug. 25 in a county jail-issued jumpsuit, sat facing the judge and away from the courtroom audience throughout the hearing. “What a coward you are for not turning around one single time to look any of us in the face,” Jane Doe No. 2 shouted at Wolfsmith’s back at the conclusion of her statement. Wolfsmith was also wearing a medical sling on his left arm, the result of an injury suffered after an inmate attacked him in Santa Clara County Jail “a couple months

14 counts related to 13 female victims. On Aug. 25, one of the women described in detail how he told her to remove her top when they were alone at the gym, so he could measure her body for exercise results. He walked behind her and “pulled (her) shorts completely down” and “unhooked (her) bra,” the woman said. Another victim said, after training at Wolfpak for two years, Wolfsmith invited her into the “massage room” for therapy. She immediately felt uneasy as she lied down on the massage table and “his breathing changed” as he began to touch her inappropriately. He then covered her face with a towel and pulled her shorts down. The woman “froze” in panic, she said. “David Wolfsmith is a human being that does not believe the rules apply to him,” said one of the victims, identified by the prosecutor as “Jane Doe No. 2.” “He believes that he is above the law and, more importantly, that he is the law. He will lie, manipulate, hide and worm his way into doing what he wants, no matter what he is told by the authorities.” The victims’ names were not read in court and are not listed in public court files. The Times was at South County Courthouse during the proceedings and acquired copies some of the victims’ written statements, but will not publish their names.

DEFENDANT David Wolfsmith appears at

South County Courthouse in Morgan Hill for his sentencing hearing Aug. 25. ago,” his attorney Wesley Schroeder said. Schroeder added it’s “hard to tell” if the jail attack was motivated by the charges against him. On one side of the courtroom audience were several of Wolfsmith’s victims and their families. Ten of the 13 victims were present, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Tim McInerny. The first victim to speak Aug. 25 was 16 years old when Wolfsmith started to abuse her, she told the court. Wolfsmith “groomed” her by initially treating her like a family member, and then used her trust to take advantage of her. “The only reason you cared (for us) was so you could pull us down deeper into the darkness,” Jane Doe No. 1, the teen victim, added. Wolfsmith—the lead physical trainer for the Wolfpak team, which he coached with his wife and gym co-owner Julia Wolfsmith—allegedly called the teen a “fat pig” when she deviated from his prescribed dieting regimen. Other women described similar verbal and psychological abuse from David Wolfsmith while they paid Wolfpak to get in shape and become competitive in triathlons. One woman said Wolfsmith is a “psychopath” who used “fear, guilt, confusion and intimidation” to turn Wolfpak members against each other and maintain control. On the other side of the courtroom audience Aug. 25 were Julia Wolfsmith and a total of 17 supporters of David Wolfsmith’s, Schroeder told the judge. Julia Wolfsmith laughed,

smirked and shook her head in response to some of the victims’ verbal statements that accused her of being as “deceitful” and “wicked” as her husband. At one point during the hearing, Duong interrupted the victims’ statements to warn the audience not to “disrespect the court proceedings” by laughing or smiling. After the hearing, Julia Wolfsmith said, in response to the statements read about her in court, that she is a “licensed” personal trainer. She owns a new gym in Morgan Hill known as “Julia Wolfsmith’s Personal Training,” and added her husband is not affiliated with the business. Julia Wolfsmith applied for a Morgan Hill business license for her gym in August 2016, according to Assistant City Manager Christina Turner. The business is located at 17300 Monterey Road, the same building where Wolfpak used to be housed. Schroeder said after the hearing that the seven-year prison term and other sentence provisions are fair, “under the circumstances.” Some of the victims fear David Wolfsmith will return to coaching—and trying to abuse women— after he is released from prison. They also think there are other victims who have not reported Wolfsmith’s abuse. In addition to a sevenyear prison term, Wolfsmith also agreed to pay restitution, and to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Morgan Hill courthouse to determine the amount of restitution.

Panel: Women can overcome barriers Women, 1 refugees in 1975, after the fall of Saigon. She later became the first Vietnamese-American woman appointed to the bench in northern California. Duong is now the Facility Supervising Judge at the South County Courthouse in Morgan Hill. Duong noted that the local superior court is progressive in its hiring and leadership practices, as it is an agency where women are well represented. One-third of judges in the county’s superior court are women, and many of the court’s leadership positions are held by women.

One of the questions for the panel asked what some of the barriers to women’s success are in society, and how women can overcome those obstacles. Chavez said there are three important barriers that women themselves can challenge. These are the willingness to accept success, willingness to relocate and a fear of failure. “There is no such thing as failure—just a lesson to be learned,” Chavez said. Rose, a migrant to the U.S. who grew up in New York, added that “presence and confidence” are key to women’s success. When the panel was

asked if they had anything to say to men to encourage more support for women, Lofgren replied, “One thing I think we can do is raise our sons to be more accepting of women.” Women’s Week in Morgan Hill began Monday, Aug. 21, and culminated with a “When I Grow Up…” mixer on Sunday, Aug. 27 that aimed to encourage young women and girls to embrace leadership. The week centered around Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26, with each day featuring a different event to recognize and celebrate women in the local community.

South Bay Singers are recruiting members Choir after the college had to decrease its music program. Since that time, it has grown and developed a reputation for singable music that entertains audiences both young and old. Some of the South Bay Singers’ past programs have included Disney music, Renaissance madrigals, classical oratorios and early jukebox music. The group works hard to offer something for everyone. For the upcoming winter holiday season, the South Bay Singers will be performing Vintage Christmas music, from familiar carols to classic Christmas songs like “Chestnuts Roasting.”

Back to school with style More than 340 underserved kids from Morgan Hill and Gilroy schools were given new clothing, backpacks and haircuts Aug. 25 at the Edward “Boss” Prado Foundation’s fourth annual Fit For Fall back to school clothing drive at Cecelia’s Closet on Peebles Avenue. “We want to make sure these kids go back (to school) and feel like they fit in with nice clothing, nice backpacks and a haircut” said Cecelia Ponzini, Director of the Morgan Hill-based Prado Foundation. Sobrato drops opener BULLDOGS UNABLE TO GET BALL MOVING AGAINST CHRISTOPHER IN 38-0 LOSS FRIDAY, NOW FOCUS ON SHP Cheeto Barrera Sports Editor

gilroy—Christopher set a tone early against Sobrato and didn’t let up in a 38-0 season opening victory Friday night. Sobrato has now lost its seventh straight game dating back to last season and was left with a bunch of questions going forward. “We learned a lot tonight. We learned about ourselves. We learned a lot about our competitive spirit. And we learned a lot about our ability to stay

competitive when we’re down,” said Sobrato coach Tony Holmes. “It was one of the things that plagued us last year was our ability to stay focused for four quarters. It’s still a work in progress. “I’m not walking away from this upset, I’m walking away knowing we have work to do.” The night was dominated by the Christopher front line on both sides of the ball. The Cougars amassed 209 yards and two touchdowns rushing, led by Tyler Davis who had 96 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Joey Bassian followed with 61 yards on 10 carries and a score. Christopher’s passing game came through just enough to provide a balance for the run game. Ben Sanford threw for 87 yards and three touchdowns in his debut as the Cougars’ starter.

Tight end Cooper Ahola caught three passes, two going for touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Bulldog run game—which coach Holmes was hoping to use to beat up the Cougar players who were going both ways— was completely held in check. Christopher came into the game well prepared for what the Bulldogs were going to throw at them, Pierleoni said. And he gave all the credit to his defensive coordinator for getting the team ready. “When you have time to prepare like that and we fell like we prepared pretty good, especially for a nonleague, first game I feel like we were a little bit advanced in that situation,” Pierleoni said. “I expected us to do well defensively because we have so many defensive returners. I’m very happy with our coaching staff.”

Sobrato had 37 total yards on the ground and 72 total yards of offense, including converting three first downs for the entire game. The Bulldogs didn’t move the chains for the first time until John Bell ran for 10 yards on second and 4 to his own 40. Sobrato’s best drive came on its next series when the Bulldogs converted two first downs, including a third and 7 that crossed midfield and Bell hit Jarod Jones for a 12-yard pass play. But it ended on the next play when Ethan Crawford snagged an interception on the CHS 35. It was the only turnover of the game. Christopher’s defense also held on fourth down five times including holding on fourth and 1 three times. Holmes said his team had chances to move the ball against ➝ Bulldogs, 18

WATER POLO

Sobrato falls in tough ‘17 debut The Sobrato boys water polo team jumped out of the gate immediately facing a top-tier opponent in Valley Christian, who appeared in the CCS semifinals a year ago. The Warriors jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and eventually upped the margin to 11-1 at the half. Sobrato netted a goal in the third quarter, but found itself down 16-2 going into the final frame. Valley Christian scored eight time to close out the game, eventually winning 24-2. Sobrato will next host Leland on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.

LO rolls past Alisal, gets ready to host Christopher Cheeto Barrera Sports Editor

Live Oak overcame some first-game jitters and mistakes to come away with a convincing 34-13 win over Alisal on Aug. 25. The Acorns scored all five of their touchdowns as the result of quarterback Jonathan Singleton, who threw three TD passes and ran in two more. “Johnny keeps plays alive with his feet,” said coach Mike Gemo. “If the

protection breaks down, he scrambles until something opens up.” Singleton opened the scoring with a 15-yard run off an option play for a quick 7-0 lead. Cole Davis on Alisal’s ensuing play from scrimmage recovered a fumble on the Trojans’ 15 setting up Live Oak’s second scoring play. The Acorns moved the ball to the 1 yard line where Singleton punched

it in for a 13-0 first quarter lead. Singleton finished with 29 yards on three carries with two touchdowns on the ground. He added 144 yards passing with three TDs and no interceptions, completing 10 of 16. His big play went to Christian Guary, who caught a 50-yard pass in the second quarter to set up Live Oak’s third score. Gemo said Singleton was forced out of the

three-yard slant pass for a 20-6 lead after the break. Alisal added a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final score. Overall, Gemo said he was pleased with the outcome, but noted there were a few things he wants to see tightened up. “The defense came swarming to the football. It was nice to see guys flying all over the place,” Gemo said. “I just think there were some mistakes

on both sides of the ball that we’re going to need to clean up.” Now Live Oak must get ready for Christopher, who is coming off a convincing 38-0 win over Sobrato a week ago. Gemo said the key is going to be controlling the time of possession against the Cougars and prevent them from connecting on big plays. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Live Oak on Friday.

Christopher, but didn’t take advantage of them and it hurt the offensive momentum. “There were a couple opportunities we had to move the ball, they were just missed opportunities,” Holmes said. “We made some adjustments in the second half and I thought we did a little bit better, but we kept getting beat by the same play. It was heart wrenching. It really was.” Holmes said it will now be up to the coaches to go back and review and see where they can do better and put the players in better positions. “I don’t blame the kids. As coaches we’re going to have to go back to the house tonight and get together and review the film and

pocket, but eventually found Jaime Martinez in the back of the endzone for an easy score. Martinez caught four passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns. The second came in the fourth quarter to help put the game away. In between, Khy Rodriguez got into the mix in his first year on varsity by catching four passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Rodriguez caught a

break the film down and get ready for Sacred Heart Prep,” Holmes said. Sacred Heart Prep is coming off a tough 28-21 loss to San Benito in its opener on Friday. The Gators scored twice in the third quarter to eventually go into the final frame tied 21-all but couldn’t break the tie, eventually yielding a

touchown to the Balers in the fourth. Sacred Heart Prep will come into the contest with a balanced attack, led by quarterback Brad Yaffe who threw for 108 yards and a TD. Runningback Tommy Brands had 75 yards to lead the team. Kickoff for the game is 2 p.m. Saturday in Atherton.

san jose—Jenna Fields had 12 kills and Mackenzie Turnispeed had eight aces as Sobrato swept Oak Grove to officially kick off the season. The Bulldogs earned a 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 win over the Eagles in the opener, but had to work along the way. “It was a lot of up and down, but all I can say is they pulled it through and that’s all that matters,” said coach Julia Brewer, who has now officially taken over for Teresa Hodges who stepped down after last season but had stayed on in the lead up to the first game. Oak Grove had its strongest push to extend the match in the third set when the Eagles went on a 6-1 scoring run to take a four-point lead with the help of a controversial call. With the set tied 8-all, Sobrato sent an attack to the other side that made a steep dive for the floor. An Oak Grove defender made a diving play at the ball, which popped up and played on by the Eagles. The Bulldogs all thought the ball hit the ground, but the official allowed play to continue and eventually a disjointed

Sobrato team mis-hit the ball and Oak Grove was awarded a point. From there, the wheels looked like they were coming off as the Eagles went up 12-8 on Sobrato mental and physical lapses. But Sobrato got new life on a missed serve and Hailey Jones scored an ace and Sobrato was off. Jones also added 30 assists as setter. The Bulldogs went on a 12-2 scoring run when all was said and done thanks to two aces from Jones, an ace from Turnispeed and Annette Angeles and two kills from both Fields and Jessica Byrum. “They pulled it together with their intensity and teamwork,” Brewer said. “It flowed. They were able to bring it back and eventually take the win.” Still Oak Grove wouldn’t go down quietly, as the Eagles pulled to within one thanks to a 6-1 scoring run. But Fields put an end to that with a kill and served up two aces for match point. Hailey Kieth scored a block for the final point of the match. Sobrato will next take on Gilroy in the Bulldogs’ home opener with the game scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
