The South Bay motorcycle community came together in Morgan Hill Saturday to help make the holidays merry and bright for local children who are less fortunate.
The House of Thunder Harley Davidson annual Toy Run started in the dealership’s parking lot on Condit Road the morning of Dec. 9. More than 50 bikers loaded up new stuffed animals, dolls, kids’ bicycles and other new presents onto their motorcycles and a trailer, and rode together to donate the gifts to Rebekah’s Children’s Services in Gilroy. More than 2,000
new toys were donated to House of Thunder in the weeks preceding the Dec. 9 toy run— mostly from the annual Hells Angels “Red and White Toy Drive” which took place at the dealership the previous week, according to House of Thunder Marketing Manager Joel Milburn. Sierra LaMar’s killer gets life in prison ANTOLIN GARCIA TORRES PLANS TO APPEAL VERDICT
Antolin Garcia Torres, the man convicted of kidnapping and killing Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar, was formally sentenced Dec. 12 to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Superior Court Judge Vanessa Zecher also ruled at the Hall of Justice in San Jose that Garcia Torres, 26, of Morgan Hill, must register as a sex offender. “You have robbed Sierra of what God had planned for her, and the lives she could have changed,” Marlene LaMar told her daughter’s killer, according to ABC7 correspondent Chris Nguyen. The same jury also recommended Garcia Torres be sentenced to life in prison without parole. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office argued for the death penalty for Garcia Torres. Gilroy resident Roger Nelson, who was among scores of volunteers who has helped search for Sierra’s remains in the years after her disappearance, said the Dec. 12 sentence for Garcia Torres doesn’t offer the “strong sense of relief” that he was expecting. “I’m very pleased... because he is off the streets for the rest of his life,” Nelson said. “But it’s a somewhat hollow victory because Sierra has not been returned to her family.” He also commented on the statements of the 2009 Safeway victims read in court. CITY COUNCIL
Carr reacts to reports in Facebook statement COUNCIL COLLEAGUES ADDRESS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AT PUBLIC MEETING Michael Moore Editor
Larry Carr Days after he was charged with domestic battery and publicly scolded at a city council meeting, Morgan Hill City Councilman Larry Carr addressed the allegations and his criminal past in a lengthy social media post Dec. 8. In the statement, posted on his Facebook page “Councilmember Larry Carr,” Carr says he has “never laid a hand on a woman in anger” and denies the recent charges as well as a 2015 report that he battered the same woman. He admits his relationship with his longtime girlfriend—the alleged victim in both domestic violence reports— has been “toxic” for both. He also says he has been uplifted in the days following his Nov. 25 arrest “by the responses of people who truly know me,” and opens up that he is now focused on “rebuilding” his
—LARRY CARR, IN DEC. 8 FACEBOOK POST has not defined me and instead I used that experience to commit myself to improving my community. While I did not advertise this transgression when I first ran for office in 1996, I also did not hide it and have made sure to share my learning with my son as he learned to drive and will again with my daughter when it is time.” Of the 2015 no contest plea on domestic battery, Carr’s statement reads: “For reasons I now regret, I did plead no contest to a single charge—which was ultimately dismissed—in an effort to keep this situation from going to court which would then place my children in the spotlight they didn't ask for nor deserve. Obviously, that decision did the exact opposite.”
Public comments
Carr’s statement comes two days after one of his colleagues on the council and a member of the public excoriated him in light of the criminal allegations. City Councilman Rene Spring turned to Carr at the Dec. 6 council meeting and asked him to “make the right call and deal with your personal and legal issues in a more private setting.” Spring added he is “still trying to wrap my head around” the recent reports of Carr’s arrest and convictions. “I haven’t slept well the past few

days,” Spring admitted. “I find it extremely disappointing. It is really hard for me to find the right words. At times I am sick to my stomach.” Spring admitted he doesn’t know if the allegations are true, but the reports don’t support the “highest respect” he has always had for Carr as a public servant. During the public comment portion of the Dec. 6 meeting, Morgan Hill resident Ann Horner addressed the allegations and pointedly told Carr he should resign from office. Horner noted that even though the other four council members don’t have the ability to remove Carr from the elected body, they could revoke his current title of Mayor Pro Tem. “I cannot imagine myself moving forward seeing you there in between the city’s business,” Horner said to Carr. “I am asking you to step down.” While Councilwoman Caitlin Jachimowicz didn’t specifically mention Carr’s case, she used the comment period before the council approved the agenda Dec. 6 to advise women on how to seek help if they feel they are in danger. “I want to reiterate that if you are in immediate danger or somebody you know is in immediate danger, don’t hesitate to call 911,” Jachimowicz said. She also advised the audience that anyone who has

experienced intimate partner violence can call the Domestic Violence Crisis Line at 1-800-END-SADV (363-7238). Furthermore, victims can seek help anonymously and discreetly online by visiting safechatsv.org. And anyone who feels threatened can “always walk into” City Hall, the library, community center or other city facilities and “get the help you need,” Jachimowicz said. Carr did not return phone calls requesting further comment after he published the Dec. 8 statement. Councilmember Rich Constantine did not speak publicly about Carr’s situation Dec. 6, but he told the Times that he is “sad for what Larry’s family is going through.” He also said he was “disappointed” when he heard about Carr’s 2015 conviction, but he declined to say whether he should resign from elected office. Constantine added, “There is no excuse for domestic violence.” Mayor Steve Tate, who has been one of Carr’s closest and most loyal political allies in recent years, declined to comment on the allegations and crimes when contacted by the Times. Carr is currently serving his fifth consecutive four-year term on the council. His current term expires in 2020.

relationship with his children and parents. “I have lived my entire adult life in the public service arena and know I have standards to live up to and behaviors I need to exhibit,” the statement begins. “I owe this to my family, my friends, and my community. And, while I have made mistakes in my life, none of them involve violence.” Morgan Hill Police arrested Carr Nov. 25 on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend called to report he had assaulted her at the home they shared in the city’s downtown. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office subsequently charged him with misdemeanor domestic battery. Carr’s arraignment on this charge is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2018. A review of court records by the Times found that Carr pleaded no contest to a similar misdemeanor charge in 2015, in relation to an incident at the couple’s former home in March of that year. Carr completed a 16-week counseling program, and was not fined or sentenced to any jail time. The court later dismissed the charge from his record, at Carr’s formal request. In 1993, Carr was also convicted of misdemeanor driving under the influence resulting in bodily injury in relation to a vehicle accident in which he and two occupants of the vehicle he hit were flown to a nearby hospital. He also addressed this conviction in his Dec. 8 statement: “I have admitted to making a young stupid mistake 25 years ago, which I paid for, and have never even come close to making again. That mistake though

Domestic violence: Silence is the enemy of healing
T
he recent domestic battery charge against Morgan Hill City Councilman Larry Carr is disturbing to me on many levels, but especially as a woman, a mother and as an advocate for women affected by domestic violence (DV), sexual assault, harassment and other forms of gender bias. In addition to the current DV charge against Mr. Carr, we have recently learned that there was a prior arrest and conviction for the same charge in 2015. That incident happened prior to his campaign and re-election in 2016. Most voters did not have this information before they voted, or they might well have voted differently. Silence is the enemy on all such issues of oppressing women, especially in the maledominated political realm, where there has been a deep tradition of covering up to keep the political powers that be intact. Recently we have seen a backlash on perpetrators, which is long overdue. Usually, there are people close to the perpetrator who know about such issues. I can’t help but wonder who in Morgan Hill knew about this 2015 arrest and kept it under wraps. I would ask those close to Mr. Carr when it was that they first knew about the 2015 incident, and what they did about it. Did they help keep the silence or even continue to promote him through his 2016 campaign, or did they just find out with the recent arrest and charges? If you knew before 2017 and said nothing or did nothing, you, too, are party to the damages that our community suffers. DV is a serious matter with a long tradition and history of acceptance and justifications across cultures, countries and centuries. It is of personal and societal consequence, and it is part of the culture that not only compromises the rights and contribution of women, but it also compromises the strength of our community and society.

Police Chief David Swing has presented at city council meetings and told us that as citizens, we are the eyes and ears of the community and that if we “see something,” we should “say something.” It’s time to speak up. Mr. Carr also has another record of causing harm to others from a 1993 DUI arrest when others suffered bodily harm because of his actions. A “young” woman who was DUI killed my dad in 1996. I cringed at Mr. Carr’s justification that he was “young” when his incident happened. No, he wasn’t. He was the age that many are who have served the better half of the decade in the armed services, and denying responsibility when he hurts others seems to be a pattern.
Silence is the enemy on all such issues of oppressing women, especially in the male-dominated political realm. With a city council of just five representing almost 45,000 residents, we must insist on the best our community has to offer. Do we really need another conviction to ask Mr. Carr to step down? I encourage others to speak up at the Dec. 20 council meeting, as it is the last one this year and your voices matter. Yes, silence is the enemy. Ann Horner, a Morgan Hill resident, has completed state-certified intimate partner/ sexual assault/human traffic advocate training and service, and participated in suicide prevention, mandated reporting and DV lethality certifications offered through Santa Clara County. She is also a sworn, certified Court Appointed Special Advocate. She wrote this column on her own behalf for the Morgan Hill Times.

Re: ‘Council approves plans for 242 homes in east Morgan Hill’ Us up in San Jose aren't too thrilled with it either! I'd like to see the council focus on bringing hi-tech companies to Morgan Hill to help reverse the bad and about to get worse commuter traffic flow. Hwy 101 is just part of it. We're getting an increasingly large flow of cars heading south down Santa Teresa Blvd through our south San Jose neighborhoods in the early evenings. Looks like that'll continue to get worse too. Bringing hi-tech to Morgan Hill is the only way to help resolve this. “jwag77” via morganhilltimes.com

City rallies behind official’s daughter FORMER CITY MANAGER’S DAUGHTER DIED AFTER COMPLICATIONS FROM SURGERY Michael Moore Editor
City of Morgan Hill staff and elected officials are asking the community to support the family of former City Manager Steve Rymer, whose daughter died Nov. 29 due to complications from heart surgery. Michelle Kathleen Schull, 28, lived in Mankato, Minn., and was a graduate of Sobrato High School. She was married to Dustin Schull, according to an obituary posted on Mankato Mortuary’s website. The couple recently had a young daughter,

But “love persisted” between her and her husband, who she met in 2009, according to the page. After their marriage in 2014, doctors “believed in Michelle’s heart, and supported her and Dustin’s desire to start a family,” according to the gofundme page. Four months into her pregnancy, doctors determined she needed surgery to replace the wires in her heart device, the gofundme page says. Kennedy was born Aug. 30, and the replacement surgery was scheduled for Nov. 21. “The outcome of the surgery was unfathomable, even understanding the possibilities of
complications, and Michelle’s family let her go to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 29, 2017,” reads the fundraising page. Her organs were donated to other patients in need. “Michelle’s impact was felt daily as she worked in schools with families with children diagnosed with exceptional learning abilities,” the gofundme page adds. Michelle Schull was born in Minnesota. After graduating from Sobrato, she moved back to Minnesota for college, where she received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Minnesota State Mankato. Rymer added that Schull was a “great ambassador” for the American Heart Association, and she often called national Go Red Day (Feb. 3) her birthday because she “loved what it meant for her and others.”

OBITUARIES June 7, 1947 - November 30, 2017
D
r. Daniel W. Gregg, a veterinarian in Morgan Hill since 1976, passed away on November 30, 2017. Daniel was born June 7, 1947, to Warren and Irma Gregg. He grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa where he met his future wife, Jeanne Saathoff. They married in 1970, and the following year Dan graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dan first worked as a veterinarian in suburban Chicago, then moved to the East Bay where he was the surgeon in a busy small animal practice in San Pablo, California. He opened the Morgan Hill Animal Hospital on Monterey Road in early 1976. During his 32 years in business Dan employed several associate veterinarians, and in his final years of practice, his brother, Dr. Stephen Gregg often worked with him. He was voted The Times Best Veterinarian every year the award was given, including in 2009, the year he retired. Until the 101 freeway was completed to San Jose, local veterinarians took all their own emergency calls, working nights, weekends, and holidays. Dan organized the small animal veterinarians in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy into a rotational shared emergency coverage, which freed up their “off ” hours -- especially in the days before cell phones. Dan was an active member of the community, serving on a variety of non-profit boards and committees. He held many positions in Rotary, including president. Dan began scouting as a den leader and continued, becoming an assistant scout master in Troop 799. He was the finance chairman of the Magic Ship of Christmas for many years, and continued his work in scouting long after his son had moved on to college. Dan is survived by his wife, Jeanne, son David, daughter Andrea and husband Sergio Guajardo, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Dr. Richard Gregg and wife, Sarah, brother Dr. Stephen Gregg, sister Patricia Barr and husband Dr. David Barr, as well as many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life honoring Dan will be held January 13, 2018 at 11:00am in the Hiram Morgan Hill room of the Community and Cultural Center in Morgan Hill. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Morgan Hill Rotary Foundation, PO Box 283, Morgan Hill, CA 95038.

Teachers to negotiate for a new contract CURRENT AGREEMENT EXPIRES JUNE 2018 Scott Forstner Reporter
Targeting better healthcare benefits and higher wages for its members, site leaders and negotiating team members from Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers officially opened the new bargaining period with their district employers Dec. 5. The teachers are currently operating under a three-year contract, which expires at the end of this school year. MHFT President Gemma Abels said the union’s goal is to finalize a new agreement before the current contract expires June 30. “As we begin our negotiations, what we are asking the district is to invest in our students by valuing their teachers, counselors, librarians, nurses and speech pathologists,” Abels, who also acts as MHFT’s chief negotiator, said at the Dec. 5 school board meeting. Back in April, after a year of contract talks, the teachers union and district leaders agreed to a 6 percent raise that was retroactive for the 2016-17 school year along with a 3 percent raise for the current school year. A first-year MHUSD teacher starts at $54,989. However, district leaders and school board members recently discussed a need for more

Inaugural holiday boutique helps Sobrato benefit students from both schools. All monies will go into the general music fund. “It went so well that I’m sure this will be an annual event,” said Jodi Gonzales, vice president of the Sobrato Music Association. “I just want to give a big thank you to all the Sobrato and Murphy parents for pulling it all together.” Each vendor donated a
gift that was raffled off during the event. Music director Greg Chambers, who works at both schools, and Mark Russo were part of a saxophone quartet that played for two hours along with some Sobrato music students. Santa Claus stopped by on his pirate ship to take photographs with children and take a mental note of their holiday wishes.

A Dec. 9 holiday boutique, organized by the Sobrato Music Association, drew about 250 visitors who were treated to 44 local vendors as well as photos with Santa Claus while being serenaded with live music. The inaugural fundraiser for the Ann Sobrato High School and Martin Murphy Middle School music programs generated funds that will

Garden Club offers horticulture grants PLANTING-TOLEARN PROGRAM OFFERS SEED MONEY FOR TEENS
South Valley Fleurs Garden Club is accepting grant applications from local schools and youth groups through its EduGrow Planting-to-Learn
program, which aims to promote horticulture education. For the last six years, SV Fleurs Garden Club has supported education in horticulture by offering grants to schools, teachers and youth groups, such as the Scouts and 4H programs, who wish to include gardening in their programs, or fund a project involving horticulture, according to a Dec. 5 announcement.
The club has granted funds for new and existing gardens, habitat development, soil amendments, tools and irrigation supplies in South Valley schools and youth groups. The EduGrow curriculum is aligned to the California State Standards for Science. The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2018. To receive a grant application form or request more information,
contact Betsy Ding by email at dingbetsy@gmail.com “The garden club believes that Planting-to-Learn programs and projects are an easy way to implement science standards and help connect children with the source of their food, as well as their natural environment,” said Lisa Ruminski, President of the SV Fleurs Garden Club. “These programs also help build community by involving
schools, students, parents and local retailers in the process of funding and maintaining gardening projects.” Schools and nonprofit youth groups in Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista are invited to submit grant applications.
About South Valley Fleurs

House of Thunder rides for Rebekah’s ➝ Toy Run, 1 the previous week, according to House of Thunder Marketing Manager Joel Milburn. More than 20 motorcycle clubs and 400 bikers from throughout the Bay Area participated in the Dec. 2 event.
Also on Dec. 9, the dealership donated the proceeds from a bike raffle—more than $5,000—to Rebekah’s Children’s Services, which offers a variety of health, education and other services to children and foster families in South County, Salinas and Campbell. House of Thunder also invited patrons to donate toys at the dealership’s showroom. “Customers just kept
coming in, and coming in with more toys,” Milburn said. It was a special sight when the bikers roared into Rebekah’s Children’s Services parking lot Dec. 9, loaded up with toys. “It actually is a huge blessing,” said Claudia Sandoval, Rebekah’s Interim Director for Community Relations. “We’re really grateful to Harley House of Thunder. Rallying the bike clubs, and to see their big hearts, giving back to the community, is amazing.” The children who live on the campus of Rebekah’s on-site school were excited to see all the motorcycles and toys, she added.
Rebekah’s and House of Thunder have teamed for the annual toy run for more than a decade. Sandoval said by now, the toy run typically provides holiday gifts to more than 1,000 children whose families are served by Rebekah’s Children’s Services. “It reaches multiple communities,” Sandoval said. Rebekah’s is not the only recipient of House of Thunder’s and the biker community’s generosity. Toys collected during the Dec. 2 Red and White toy drive also went to Cathedral of Faith and St. Justin of Santa Clara, Milburn said.

Sports leagues pan proposed facility rate hikes ➝ Facilities, 1
Morgan Hill PONY Baseball’s cost for using school district fields, mostly at Britton Middle School, would rise from $2,695 for 382 hours to $18,685, according to Facilitron’s cost analysis. Trustee Gino Borgioli was on the opposite side of the issue. “We’re in a deficit spending environment and we can’t keep on expending money for field repairs and other repairs,” Borgioli said. “We just can’t do it anymore. This is something that makes perfect sense.” According to the Dec. 5 agenda, the district contracted with Facilitron, an online facility rental software platform, in Jan. 2017 so sports clubs interested in renting MHUSD fields could make reservations through the online booking agent. District staff then asked Facilitron “to provide a comparison of the district’s costs for facility maintenance and capital replacement compared to actual facility use fees generated.” “We’re not here to make money. We’re here to recover costs,” Assistant Superintendent Kirsten Perez said. “We find ourselves in this awkward position of how do we collect facilities fees that support cost recovery (while) at the same time how do we support our community.” A comparison, conducted by Facilitron, to what MHUSD currently charges to that of Gilroy Unified School District showed a significant cost
district’s rollout for the facility use increase (which would generate $300,000 in revenues at full implementation) would be phased in over a three-year period with fees increasing to 40 percent of the overall change the first year, then to 70 percent the second year to reach full cost by the third year. School board trustees did not vote on the proposal at the Dec. 5 meeting. District leaders requested the board table the issue, which they did by 6-0 vote, so they could a sit down with representatives of the affected sports organizations to gain their feedback. In Oct. 2016, the board approved a rental storefront agreement with Facilitron. In that contract it stipulated that “the facility user will be charged a service fee of 5% of their use fee and the District will pay 5% of the fee which will be deducted from the fees collected.”
1985 that provides recreational and competitive soccer leagues for local youth ages 5-19, was estimated to see an increase in costs from $6,870 to $76,985 for 1,908 hours of field use at five MHUSD schools, according to a Dec. 5 presentation by district-hired Facilitron. Middleton said no one from the district had reached out to him about their plans to increase facility use fees prior to the Dec. 5 school board meeting. “As far as I know, the first notification of a potential change we received was Dec. 6 via email,” Middleton added. “We were invited to a Jan. 3, 2018 meeting to ‘discuss the rate analysis and solicit feedback from our facility user groups.’” The same rate analysis recommends pushing facility use costs for Spirit of Morgan Hill, a nonprofit recreational and competitive softball organization which has called San Martin/Gwinn Elementary School its home for 35 years, from $2,130 to $72,735 for 1,487 hours of field time. “A 3,000 percent-plus increase to one of our largest annual expenditures would be difficult for the organization to handle,” said Spirit President Tom Evans, who also would be forced to add a “field surcharge to registration fees” to cover the increased costs. “We would have no choice but to look at other options.” It was explained at the Dec. 5 meeting that the
Trustees have mixed reaction to proposal
Board reaction to the district’s proposal was mixed. Trustee David Gerard voiced his opposition to any type of increase to the district’s “modest” facility use fees regardless if they are considered “the lowest in the Bay Area,” he said. “My two sons played in PONY Baseball on our school district fields for eight years, and it was a very important formative part of their development,” Gerard said. “I am very hesitant to recommend going forward with what I’ve heard here tonight.”

Field conditions not the best
According to Facilitron’s presentation, the district “has been subsidizing community groups over $300,000/year in facility use.” The rate increase would help “to provide for the maintenance, restoration and replacement of facilities.” Middleton said the school district has done next to nothing to maintain the fields that his teams use for practices and games. Three years ago, OVYSL Board spent about $5,000 in materials, and used volunteer labor, to complete minor field upgrades at Sobrato, according to Middleton. They were forced to stop playing at Nordstrom Elementary School “because

the fields were not being maintained and there were unsafe areas for our players.” Most of the fields were left to die during our recent drought years and there hasn’t appeared to be any reseeding/replanting type efforts made by the staff,” Middleton said. As for Spirit Softball, Evans noted that his league built and maintains four fields at SM/G while still paying a $15 daily rental rate. The league also leased a dirt lot on the north side of the school, where they built two additional fields. “We have a positive working relationship with the district, but fear that this third party billing firm is harming the organizations that our parents and neighbors built for us when we were kids,” said Evans, who prefers to work directly with the district. “After hearing of the Facilitron proposal Tuesday night at the MHUSD board meeting, we are left with uncertainty of our future
and will start questioning the hours we spend maintaining the same fields that we played on as kids.” Evans said that he recently met with more than a dozen softball leagues from Morgan Hill to Redwood City to discuss the upcoming spring season. “That night, each league representative discovered that Facilitron is either causing havoc or working hard to bring it to each one of our fields,” he said. Other youth sports organizations that use MHUSD fields and would see cost increases under the Facilitron proposal were Dub Sports, Morgan Hill Youth Sports, Silicon Valley Adult Baseball League, South San Jose Youth Soccer League and United States Youth Volleyball League. Perez said district staff “is planning to meet and receive input from affected organizations at the beginning of January and bring the facility user rates back to the board for consideration on Jan. 23.”

difference. For example, South County Outlaws Lacrosse pays $255 for 69 hours of field use in Morgan Hill while that same time in Gilroy would cost them $7,590. Brad Ledwith, President of South County Outlaws Lacrosse, admitted that MHUSD’s current fee structure is “extraordinarily low,” but the field condition warrants the price tag. “If the rates increase, then I think those fees that we’re paying should be used to upgrade the facilities, because, as a stakeholder, if you’re willing to pay more, I need to receive more,” said Ledwith, whose lacrosse team practices at Sobrato. “The (school) fields in Morgan Hill are in disrepair all over town.”

and Dec.time slot, or just walk into the shop located just north of downtown off Monterey Street from 10am until the last tattoo of the day is inked. Kelso and fellow tattoo artist Ryan Burches will take care of the rest. The tattoo process takes only 15 to 20 minutes, according to Kelso. “I have five little girls at home so I couldn’t imagine any child not getting a present for Christmas,” Burches said. “It’s a great event, a great idea and I’m happy to be part of it.”
Last Friday, about 60 customers took Kelso up on her offer. She’s hoping even more take part over the next two Fridays. “The first one was pretty busy and last Friday was just nonstop from about 10am to 2am,” said Kelso, who got the idea from a client of hers as they chatted about charity events for the holidays. A representative from the “Toys For Tots” organization will pick up the first load of toys next week. The final Friday’s toy haul will go to a local group/organization yet to be identified, Kelso said.
Kelso, 30, of Morgan Hill, opened Sailor’s Ink four years ago. She recently became certified in sound wave tattoos, which produce music when scanned using a sound motion app from a Smart phone similar to a QR scanner. Burches, of Salinas, came aboard two years ago. Kelso added the inaugural toy drive is the start of monthly specials they will be offering at the shop throughout 2018. Sailor’s Ink (sailorsink.com) is opened 11am to 8pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Javier Torres, a Live Oak High senior, is currently ranked fifth in the section in the 113 pound division. Torres took sixth at 106 pounds in CCS last year.
Wrestler has self-motivation JAVIER TORRES WANTS TO BE THE ABSOLUTE BEST Emanuel Lee Sports Editor
Javier Torres is his own worst critic. In a 25-minute phone interview with the Times, Torres on three occasions used the work “choke” in describing some of his past performances, including a recent second-place showing in the Webber Lawson Memorial
Tournament at Fremont High in Sunnyvale. Perhaps it’s a way for the Live Oak High junior to continually motivate himself in a grueling sport such as wrestling, which can sap even the toughest of athletes. “I try to be hard on myself,” he said. “My goals for this season is to be a CCS champion along with going to state. One day I want to be a state champion. I want to be the best—period.” Torres entered the week
ranked fifth in the section at 113 pounds. The 5-foot-4 Torres is coming off a season in which he finished third in the Blossom Valley League Championships and sixth in the CCS Championships, both at 106 pounds. Torres will either stay at 113 or drop down to 106 as the season goes along. In whatever weight class he competes, Torres knows he’ll have to improve in every phase of the sport. Even though Torres is adept at countering shots, he still feels he can take that part of
his skillset to another level. Torres didn’t fare particularly well against some of the section’s elite a year ago, but he’s looking to change that this season. “Sometimes I don’t feel like I wrestle to my true potential against the best competition,” he said. “I always believe I should do better. … I try to stay aggressive 100 percent of the time and thrive on my opponent’s mistakes. I want to have the best defense and the best offense, the best standing top game and
bottom game. I want to be the best all-around wrestler, and in order to do that I have to improve on everything.” Live Oak coach Eric Jardine, who coached at crosstown rival Sobrato High last year, said he can’t wait to see how Torres develops this season. “From what I’ve seen, Javier is a talented wrestler who has all the skills to eventually go to the next level,” Jardine said. ➝ Javier Torres, 22
Grant headed east to West Point LIVE OAK HIGH SENIOR SIGNS TO RUN AT WEST POINT Emanuel Lee Sports Editor

LOVE LETTER Kaylah Grant will run for the U.S. Military Academy, a Division I program.
When Kaylah Grant returned to the Bay Area last summer after spending a week at a leadership camp at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York, she immediately had a sense of nostalgia. Never mind the fact that Grant was back in her native Morgan Hill. The Live Oak High senior was raised in the South Valley, but she left her heart in New York. “When I came back here, I knew I
had to go back home even though it wasn’t my official home,” Grant said. “When I was visiting there, I knew in my heart I couldn’t be anywhere else. I loved everything about it, and when I fall in love with some place, I feel in my heart I have to be there.” And that’s exactly where Grant will be after she signed her letter of intent to run cross country for the Division I program on Nov. 7 in front of family, friends and coaches at the Live Oak High gym. “It was a really awesome feeling,” she said. “It felt so good to finally be able to sign and officially be committed.” Grant will have to attend West
Point’s prep school for her first year, which basically means she’ll be redshirting next fall and have four years of athletic eligibility afterward. Grant said she will major in criminal investigation and not go into combat. It’s a dream come true for Grant, who got emotional when she received the letter of assurance that secured her spot at West Point. Grant owes a big thank you to her mom, Kresta, who encouraged her daughter to pursue the U.S. Military Academy after she received a letter of interest from them in the beginning of her junior year. ➝ Kaylah Grant, 22

compete in wrestling, and he has no plans to let up on the academic side going forward. “Sports are a great motivation for me to keep my grades up and take them seriously,” he said. Torres developed a love for the sport in his freshman year, and tried out for the team in part because his parents, Edith and Hector, encouraged him to do so. Perhaps Torres’ parents had an intuition that their son could excel in wrestling, because he’s made a dramatic improvement since his freshman season. In Torres’ first-ever tournament—coincidentally, it was the Webber Lawson—Torres got pinned rather unceremoniously before reeling off four consecutive wins for a solid sixth-place showing. “The first match of that tournament I didn’t really know
what I was doing,” Torres said. “He hooked my legs and set me up for a banana split. I didn’t know what it was and rolled straight into the move and basically ended that match for myself.” However, Torres persevered to win four straight, displaying a supreme resolve and determination that is evident today. Torres said his two older half-brothers, Armando and Frank Justo, toughened him up at an early age. “They had a huge impact on me,” he said. “We used to host little wrestling tournaments in the house, and me being a little kid, I couldn’t really wrestle them since they were a lot older. But I always tried to hop in with the big boys and have fun. They’re definitely one of reasons why I think I’m doing as well as I am.”

“It comes down to discipline— that is where he’s at right now. He’s got to get situated with his weight, and I he’ll be set.” Torres was initially interested in wrestling in the sixth grade and all through middle school, but his inability to make grades prevented him from going full bore into the sport. “I could never make grades, and I always wanted to see how a full season really was,” he said. When Torres got cut from the junior varsity football team as a sophomore because of grades, it left an impact that still affects him positively today. “After being cut from the football team, there was no other pain like that pain,” he said. “And I never wanted to feel that again.” Torres got his GPA up to
ON THE RISE Javier Torres has made dramatic improvement.
CCS Cross Country champion realizes dream ➝ Kaylah Grant, 21
From the moment Grant stepped onto campus, she felt an overwhelming sense of calm, peace and assurance. “There was no chance I was going anywhere else,” she said. “It’s funny because most people want to go to college and party and do the typical college stuff. But this college is so strict you can’t do anything like that. There are specific times in which you have to do things, and I like having my day planned out already.” When Grant attended the weeklong summer experience camp in June, it gave her a

glimpse into what she’ll be experiencing before the start of her freshman year. “Every summer before school starts, they do a six-week training camp called Beast,” she said. “I know the summer training will be hard at first and it’ll probably be scary, but I know it’ll make me a stronger person.” Grant will leave Live Oak as one of the most accomplished athletes in school history, having won an individual Central Coast Section championship in cross country while making three appearances in the CIF State Championships. Before graduating, however, Grant has unfinished business in track and field, where she’s aiming for a title in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs in the CCS Championships.

“I didn’t think too much of it,” Grant said. “My initial thought was, ‘It’s the military, and I don’t want to do the military.’ But my mom said to give it a chance and after a while I finally emailed the coach (Army assistant coach Boglarka Davies) back.” From there, the two connected on the phone last December before eventually setting up a date in which Grant could visit the campus at West Point, which is situated approximately 50 miles north of New York City. Grant took an unofficial visit to West Point in June and an official visit in September.
DREAM REALIZED Kaylah Grant, a Live Oak High senior, signed her letter of intent last week to run for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York. A year ago, Grant finished third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600. Because she is not
competing in winter sports, Grant is already training for her best track season yet.
