Supplying hundreds of needy South County families with a warm meal, winter jackets, toys, photos with Santa and a bag of groceries has become a holiday tradition for
volunteers who attend the Morgan Hill chapter of the Cathedral of Faith. “There’s a tremendous need,” said Josie Scott, a lead organizer for the Cathedral’s outreach arm that spent months fundraising and putting the recent holiday event together. “We are seeing more homeless families with children, so this year our focus is on the children.” The theme for the
seventh-annual event, made possible by countless “I Love Morgan Hill” volunteers and held Dec. 15 at the Community and Cultural Center on the edge of downtown Morgan Hill, was “You Belong Here.” “We just want to show them that people do love them and they are not alone and that there’s hope,” said the cheerful Scott, who has dedicated herself to helping those
less fortunate through her outreach work. On Friday early afternoon, hundreds of needy families lined up outside the CCC hours before the event was set to begin. Scott said she was taken aback when some even asked if they could help with anything while they waited outside in the brisk temperatures. “This year, we want everyone to feel like they belong in our community.
We treat them like family,” said Pastor Gary Palacios, whose Morgan Hill chapter has grown to more than 250 strong since it was established nine years ago as part of a much larger 12,000-member national movement. The Santa Clara County Board of Education approved a five-year petition renewal for Voices-Morgan Hill charter school Dec. 13, but the move came with some fireworks sparked by local opposition. Morgan Hill Unified School District superintendent Steve Betando was present at the meeting in San Jose and questioned whether Voices officials held true to the conditions of their initial charter petition, which MHUSD denied in Sept. 2014. Two months after that, Voices won their first charter petition in Morgan Hill on appeal to the county board. That three-year petition is set to expire at the end of the current school year, and Voices, which already had a Memorandum of Understanding in place prior to the county vote, was looking to re-up for another five years. Betando—who challenged if Voices had reached its enrollment requirement and initial MOU deadline from the original three-year petition—also sparked debate among county

vote. In a roll call vote, Voices got four ayes from Mah, DiSalvo, Green and Board President Rosemary Kamei. The nays came via Rossi and Trustee Anna Song. Trustee Michael Chang was absent. “I feel far better about Voices today than I did several years ago,” said Song, who voted against the renewal. “I wanted the charter to be approved but did not want it to be unanimous....You’re not this utopia all alone in Morgan Hill. You must try to work with the district.” Frances Teso, founder and CEO of Voices College-Bound Language Academies with schools in San Jose, Mount Pleasant and Morgan Hill, agreed with Song that a better relationship needed to be forged. “I agree with you, but it does take two to tango,” Teso said. “We are making the effort. We feel we’ve built positive relationships with some MHUSD school board members.” Similar sentiments of forming a collaborative relationship between charter and local district officials were recently expressed by some MHUSD school board members after a bitter debate with the Charter School of Morgan Hill. MHUSD and CSMH officials were at odds over Proposition 51 state rehabilitation funds.

trustees and staff on their procedures for the charter renewal since the new agreed-upon MOU was not made readily available to the public. County staff disagreed with that assessment, and the board decided to move forward with the renewal vote since they also were up against a 90-day deadline to do so. Voices’ renewal petition was originally scheduled for a vote in November, but that was postponed so the charter could “correct five graphs of grammatical errors in the executive summary to the petition,” according to county staff. County Trustee Claudia Rossi, a former MHUSD board member, then accused Voices of inflating their student achievement data by low-balling their initial results to be able to show growth later in the same year. “This is outrageous,” said County Trustee Darcie Green of Rossi’s claims and her back-andforth with Betando in the public forum. “I don’t know why we are asking all these questions to (Betando), who is not in charge of oversight. We are the oversight body.” County Trustee Grace Mah then quickly interjected with a motion to approve the five-year renewal petition, which runs through 2023, for Voices. Trustee Joseph DiSalvo seconded that
Police arrested a Morgan Hill man on suspicion of attempted murder and other offenses after he allegedly drove his vehicle toward a victim during a road rage incident. About 8:30pm Dec. 6, Morgan Hill Police responded to the parking lot of Safeway on East Dunne Avenue in response to an altercation, according to authorities. The victim told police the vehicle he was driving was almost hit by a Toyota Avalon driving faster than 100 mph on East Dunne Avenue in the area near the grocery store. The victim then turned into the grocery store and noticed the Toyota following him, according to MHPD Sgt. Troy Hoefling. Mayor says $1.3 million home loan is ‘win-win’ TURNER READY TO MOVE INTO NEW MORGAN HILL HOME BY END OF MONTH Michael Moore Editor
Morgan Hill City Manager Christina Turner, who was appointed to her current position as City Hall’s top staff member at the end of last summer, will receive a home loan of up to $1.3 million from taxpayer funds when she moves inside the city limits. The concept of a home loan—similar to loans the council has approved for its previous city manager and the current city attorney—was part of Turner’s employment contract that she negotiated with the mayor in September. The council followed up Dec. 6 by unanimously approving the issuance, amount and terms of the loan. Turner is ready to complete the purchase of a home and move to Morgan Hill with her family from Gilroy by the end of December. “Morgan Hill is a beautiful community,” Turner said. “It is more expensive than Gilroy, and (the home loan) definitely made it much more feasible to move to Morgan Hill.” Turner can use the home loan only to

With all of the shopping options you have to really screw up to totally disappoint someone. When it comes down to that spirit, it’s all about the people to me. Not the requisite giving, which I enjoy, but the way everybody acts around this time of year. This is the time of year when it is OK to get together more often than usual, to stay out later, and to enjoy food and drink with the budget being a little less of a concern (remember those discounted gifts…). I hope you have enjoyed the shopping, the celebrations with friends and the spirit of the holidays with all of the right people, and may you have a Happy New Year! because then I can totally get into it and then subscribe to the one-for-you, one-for-me shopping methodology. Actually, most of this holiday season shopping has been for myself. You know, I need clothes and wine and motorcycle gloves, too. As a matter of fact, I consider the holiday season a great time to stretch the budget. I usually buy most of the stuff I can think of because it’s usually at least 20 percent off this time of year. My only issue is that I always seem to buy a bunch of stuff for other people, and that can hurt the budget. But then if you’re going to buy stuff for someone else, isn’t it great to get it at a discount? Who says I don’t have the holiday spirit?

ere we are again at the end of the year, and everyone is in great spirits. Everywhere you look the symbols of the holidays twinkle and sparkle and generally scream out that you’re supposed to be a part of the celebration. Go out on your street corner and see if you don’t just feel it in the air—I bet you’ve been conditioned to identify the smells of this time of year with the holidays. I know I have. My e-mail inbox started bubbling over around Thanksgiving with holiday cheer, and advertisements, but now it’s virtually exploding with those deals that “just got extended” and offers of delivery in time for Christmas day. I sense a whimper coming as the offers spin out of control and there’s no time for delivery, so reason sets in and someone stops hitting the send button launching those ads. Besides there’s nothing left in anyone’s inventory as each item I pick is no longer available, and if it’s seasonal you’re not going to see it again until summer wains next year. Since when did the day after Christmas mark spring fashion time? Locally, the stores are running out of those unique and sought-after items, so I reach for the next best thing—gift cards. I love gift cards! I went shopping at REI, Bass Pro Shop and Best Buy while standing with ice cream melting in my cart at Safeway. I also love the aspect of gift wrapping being less stressful: insert gift card in Christmas card and done! Now I only have to worry about whether I guessed which type of store was right, but you can even bypass that with your credit card so you are completely safe. So with all of the shopping options you have to really screw up to totally disappoint someone—unless you should’ve been more attentive and sensitive and really picked out something personal. This is where I get into trouble—unless you like wine and spirits,
A city councilmember gets arrested, accused of domestic battery. Days later, the Times reports that the same councilmember had a prior arrest and conviction for a similar charge, along with another alleged, but unreported, domestic incident. Other than two councilmembers and one public speaker, the community goes silent. No other community leaders are speaking up. No victims advocates are speaking up. Not even those who unsuccessfully stood as potential community leaders to be selected for a vacant council seat are speaking up. I, too, am guilty of not speaking up, although I did speak out in emails to members of the council to express myself. To be clear, I'm not talking about speaking out publicly to crucify Mr. Carr. I agree with those who say the public shouldn't be judge and jury, that Mr. Carr deserves his right to due process and his day in court. Yes...for his case. As a publicly elected official, however, if he willing sought community judgment on his character and integrity when he campaigned in 2016 and accepted the community's jury vote that gave him the council seat, then I see no reason to dissuade public opinion in judging his character and integrity now. It would also seem hypocritical, given Mr. Carr's recent campaign to plead his case in the public forum of his councilmember social media page. But debating Mr. Carr's guilt or innocence is irrelevant to me. What I'm questioning is the apparent lack of community involvement and discussion about a topic that currently hangs over our city's leadership, and is one at the forefront of social discussion on a national level. I've watched Morgan Hill residents unite to walk downtown for pedestrian safety when a child was injured. The community rallied on immigration issues, for the protection of Dreamers. The community has discussed minority rights and promoted diversity in the past. The community has participated in anti-bullying campaigns. Why does it seem the community is not open to a discussion about violence? And all types of violence— physical and emotional, domestic and otherwise. While the highly regarded Mr. Carr is unfortunately in the spotlight, his position or social standing shouldn't be a barrier to public discussion about violence issues, identification of networks and resources for victims, and for making a statement that this community is proactive in tackling difficult, emotional issues openly and without waiting for the judge's gavel to drop.
Poppy Jasper Lisa Burton, a resident of the Madrone neighborhood in north Morgan Hill, took this majestic photo of the three-story, glass Poppy Jasper art piece—created by Gordon Huether—on the East Third Street side of the downtown garage Dec. 13. “I thought the gnarled, old oak tree branches framing the top of the photo where beautiful against the colorful, polished stone background,” Burton said in an email. She added that she was able to capture just the right lighting while she was enjoying the artwork. Burton submitted the photo to the Times.

County to expand its shelter services As winter sets in and temperatures drop, Santa Clara County officials are actively working with all jurisdictions and providers to ramp up warming centers and associated services for homeless individuals
SAFETY TIPS DURING COLD WEATHER • Avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, or for extended periods of time in extreme cold weather • Dress in layers • Wear a hat, scarf and gloves/mittens • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to avoid hypothermia or frostbite • Get out of wet clothes as soon as possible • Stay hydrated • Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol if you will be staying outside
and families, according to county staff. “Warming centers and shelters can help save the lives of our most vulnerable children, seniors, veterans and individuals,” said District 1 Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who is South County’s representative. “A simple cold or flu can turn deadly for someone living outdoors when temperatures drop.” During extreme cold temperatures that warrant a declaration of inclement weather, the county’s Office of Supportive Housing implements the Inclement Weather Plan, which supplements the regular, ongoing cold weather shelter program. Overnight temperatures are expected to continue to dip into the mid-30 degrees, according to the local forecast. There were an estimated 7,394 homeless individuals within the county and 388 in Morgan Hill, according to the 2017 Santa Clara County Homeless Census and Survey Report. “We expand outreach and services for the homeless to reduce instances of hypothermia and frostbite caused by extreme weather including the cold, wind

Science fair motivates Britton students ANNUAL FAIR BRINGS OUT INGENUITY Scott Forstner Reporter
As Britton Middle School science teachers Trevor Agnitsch and Jim Levis read off the honorable mention, third, second and first place winners from the annual science fair Dec. 14, the eighth grade students displayed sheer exuberance when their names were called. A Britton gymnasium filled with proud parents and vocally supportive classmates, along with site faculty and district officials, made for a jubilant atmosphere at the annual winter
event that celebrates the sciences and student ingenuity. “I’m always very excited about their hard work. It’s nice to see the results of the semester of working on their projects,” said Levis, who leaves the scientific discovery solely up to the students while outlining what’s expected of their work. “We really focused on writing better on the boards and I’m satisfied with the results of that.” Reserved for eighth grade students, the science fair had 140 entrants in 2017. Each student, or group of students, was assigned to present their purpose, hypothesis, process and findings on a giant board, and then explain what they’ve discovered to a panel of judges.

BRAIN POWER Britton Middle School student JJ Verhoeven holds his first-place blue ribbon in front of his science project board during the Dec. 14 science fair. Classmates Shane Collison and Trent Cousens took on a challenge they titled, “Battle of the Bats: Wood vs. Aluminum,” for their science experiment. “The purpose was to identify which bat hit the ball the farthest,” explained Cousens, who took home a second-place ribbon. “(Science) is one of my favorite subjects. We have the best teacher in school, Mr. Agnitsch.” Collison, a travel baseball player with the San Jose Hype, noted their hypothesis proved correct since “aluminum did hit the ball farther, but when we averaged it out, it was only by three feet.” Eighth grader Sophia Banuelos stood proudly in front of her display, which she titled “Toothy Troubles.” “The purpose was to figure out which liquid stained teeth more,” said Banuelos, who dropped eggs in small containers of tea, coffee, soda and lemon

juice. “My hypothesis was coffee, but soda actually stained the most....Lemon juice actually disintegrated the egg shell.” Partners Laith Daras and Kenny Allen wanted to figure out if chewing gum actually helped with concentration for their science experiment. In doing so, they found out it did just that. “Our hypothesis was gum will not help you,” said Daras, who enjoyed the scientific process. “It was fun.” Principal Chris Moore was dazzled by the effort and creativity his eighth grade class put into their science projects, as well as the parental and community support. “I’m impressed with this event every year,” said the third-year Britton principal. “It’s an amazing opportunity for families to come to see the great work that our students do. It’s a great night.”

2017 BRITTON MIDDLE SCHOOL EIGHTH GRADE SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS
“We had some incredibly strong projects,” Levis added. The night ended with a firstplace blue ribbon in Behavioral Sciences for JJ Verhoeven, whose experiment tested how certain diets affect brain power. Of the three diets (eat-anything-you-want, vegetarian and mind), the mind diet, which he researched online and includes leafy greens, berries and fish, produced the best results. Verhoeven finagled volunteer groups to first take a test, then go on a weeklong diet and then take a similar test to compare the results. “I measured their improvement after they changed their diets and it proved my hypothesis,” said Verhoeven as he energetically explained the steps he went through. Partners Nikoo Shabab and Diya Kandhra’s project entitled, “A Duel Between Fuels,” warranted a blue ribbon from the judges in the Chemistry category. The two tested for the best renewable fuels that could possibly power an automobile. “We were surprised, but we did work really hard on this,” said Shabab of earning the first-place mark. Kandhra added their experiment into biofuel possibilities had a lofty objective of trying to “combat climate change.” She also looked forward to advancing to the citywide science fair in January to see what other students came up with for their projects. With their experiment, titled “Trident Trouble,” partners Michael Froess and Alex Flores ventured to find out which flavor of gum had the longest lasting flavor between tropical fruit and spearmint. “In our hypothesis, we thought tropical fruit would last longer,” said Flores, whose project earned a third-place ribbon. However, that was not the case, according to Froess. “Spearmint lasted longer due to the chemicals in mint,” said Froess explaining that it lasted over 22 minutes.

Needy families get Holiday helping hand ➝ Christmas Charity, 1
holiday meal—donated by San Jose-based Martha’s Kitchen—while festive holiday music set the mood in the city’s 4,030-square-foot banquet room. On the menu this year was chicken stew, pork stew, peas, carrots, fruit and quinoa salad, which volunteers started preparing hours earlier. After dinner, families went to the toy room, where special gifts were passed out to the children. Winter jackets were available. The special night also included a trip to Santa’s Village, where families were treated to free photographs with Santa. “There’s a lot of needs out there,” said Pastor George Guerrero, a retired San Jose firefighter. “There are many people here in Morgan Hill who have lost their job in the past year and could use a helping hand this season. This is what we do.”
After exiting the community center but before heading home, guests were able to pick up a bag of groceries filled with staples and other goodies from the Second Harvest Food Bank. The organizers worked with about an $11,000 budget this season, with the largest donation coming via Morgan Hill-based Golden Eagle Mortgage Group. The holiday dinner and giveaway is just one of the many outreach events organized by the Cathedral of Faith, including its family harvest food program where a free dinner is served on the second Tuesday of each month at the CCC. “It’s always nice to be able to provide (for needy families),” said Abby Assefa, who along with husband Tenbit Daniel, were in charge of the logistics for the Dec. 15 event. “It is a blessing that the church is able to do that.”

Harmon in court Dec. 21 for embezzlement plea TRIAL FOR CIVIL DEFAMATION COMPLAINT ENDED LAST WEEK Michael Moore Editor
Gary Harmon—a former Sobrato High School teacher and producer now accused of embezzling money from four local victims— was to appear at the Morgan Hill Courthouse Dec. 21 for a plea hearing, according to authorities. Harmon faced two counts of grand theft and three counts of communications containing untrue statements and omissions of fact, in relation to the embezzlement of more than $500,000 from the victims, according
to court documents. The former Morgan Hill resident was arrested in Las Vegas March 23, on a warrant filed by MHPD officers who investigated the claims. And last week, Santa Clara County Civil Court Judge Carrie Zepeda completed a civil defamation trial related to a complaint that Harmon filed against one of his victims and former business partner, Mike DiRubio, of Morgan Hill. The judge in that case will issue a written ruling within 60 days, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Erica Engin, who is prosecuting Harmon’s criminal case. Harmon filed the civil complaint alleging defamation against DiRubio in July 2015.
DiRubio said Harmon filed the lawsuit against him to “get back at me for calling the police” to accuse Harmon of embezzling his money. DiRubio denied defaming Harmon. “All I ever did was tell the truth,” DiRubio said. Harmon declined to comment on the facts of the case because “the court has asked us not to discuss the matter until it concludes,” he said in a text. Morgan Hill Police reports contained in the criminal case’s court file list at least four victims who Harmon allegedly convinced to invest in his production companies or projects, with promises of repayment and profits that were never realized. The reports claim Harmon
exaggerated or fabricated relationships with beloved celebrities—including country music legend Willie Nelson, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and former Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil—to fraudulently sell hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of investments to the marks, according to police. Harmon was producing shows in Morgan Hill as the director of ARTTEC at the time some of the embezzlement allegedly happened. DiRubio was vice president of ARTTEC and a partner in the organization. DiRubio claims that in 2013, Harmon embezzled more than $250,000 from him by reneging on a promise of a share in another production company Harmon
was tied to—ISE Entertainment—plus recurring income, in return for the investment. Harmon only returned about $71,000 to DiRubio, according to the police investigation. In 2014, ARTTEC brought bigname acts such as Kiefer Sutherland, Queensryche and Survivor to perform in Morgan Hill. In the criminal case, Harmon also faced a white-collar-crime enhancement based on the allegation that he used “fraud and embezzlement” to steal more than $500,000 from the victims, according to the criminal complaint filed by DA’s Office. The Dec. 21 hearing at South County Courthouse occurred after this newspaper’s print deadline.

SOBRATO SOCCER
Bulldogs driven to excel on, off field PLAYERS COMPILE 4.0-PLUS GPA, FUND RAISE LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW AND PLAY AMAZING ON THE SOCCER FIELD emanuel lee Sports Editor
Robert Eliason
It’s not championship or bust for the Sobrato High girls soccer team this season. Let that sink in for a moment because the Bulldogs won’t be defined by a win at all costs mentality. Are expectations high coming off the program’s first-ever Central Coast Section playoff championship game appearance? Most definitely. Are the Bulldogs loaded to make another run to the title game, having returned their entire starting lineup, an almost unheard of occurrence in high school sports? You bet. But whatever happens on the field, dare we say it will pale in comparison to what they’ve already accomplished off the pitch. To wit: the team carries a 3.99 GPA—the entire team!—putting it in the running for the highest GPA out of any team—in all sports—in the CCS. “I’m much more proud of their team GPA than I am of their athletic accomplishments,” said Sobrato coach Ted Thomas, whose team is 2-0-1 entering Thursday’s match against Live Oak. “They are smart and driven.” In seemingly everything they participate in. Because Sobrato has no turf home field, coupled with the fact the Morgan Hill Sports Complex is under renovation, the ➝ Soccer, page 20
READY TO RUMBLE Bulldogs senior Harrison Zhang went straight to wrestling practice after having a successful season on the gridiron. Now in the twilight of his prep career, Zhang would love nothing more than to win a CCS title. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
Zhang has the shots THE SOBRATO HIGH SENIOR POISED FOR LEAGUE, CENTRAL COAST SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS emanuel lee Sports Editor
Harrison Zhang has made tremendous improvement since his freshman season. It’s no surprise considering his rock-solid mindset approach to training. The Sobrato High senior takes pride in being mentally tough. “The challenge everyday is taking a hard situation and having
the right mindset through it,” he said. “For example, practice is not always fun, and you have to work hard day after day if you want to improve. But having the mindset that all your hard work will pay off helps me get through the tough times.” Sobrato coach Robert Rael mentioned Zhang’s work ethic several times in a short conversation with the Times, a big reason why Zhang has developed strong technical skills. Zhang has a variety of shots in his repertoire to take down opponents and score points. Last season, Zhang took first at 132 pounds in the Blossom
Valley League Championships before finishing sixth in the CCS Championships. This season, Zhang expects nothing less than a podium finish at CCS and a trip to the CIF State Championships. Rael expressed similar sentiments, noting Zhang’s versatility in his standup game. “The good thing about Harrison is he has a couple of different shots he can do,” Rael said. “A lot of guys have one shot and that’s it. But Harrison can go to another shot if something isn’t working. Harrison can do number of shots, and he’s pretty lethal in that regard. … Obviously we hope Harrison goes to state this
year. There’s no reason to think why he can’t.” Zhang said it took a lot of practice to hone his vast arsenal of shots. “I started wrestling in the fifth grade, and I continued practicing shots many times a day,” he said. “I wanted to perfect the speed and technique of every shot, which brings me to where I’m at today. Now I’m really comfortable with multiple different shots, and that really helps me in matches.” Zhang entered the week ranked sixth in the section at 138 pounds. He’ll either stay at 138 ➝ Zhang, page 20

girls thrive on challenges. Especially the four senior captains: Kayla Morales, Emily Pfefferlen, Megan Rottenborn and Sarah Somavia. Morales, who has a scholarship to play at Cal State East Bay next year, and Pfefferlen work well together as two of the more dynamic forwards in the entire section. Last season the duo accounted for nearly a third of the team’s goal output. Rottenborn, a central defender, and Somavia, a goalkeeper, make things difficult for teams to score on the Bulldogs. So how does the team balance enjoying the process and journey of all the things that are enjoyable outside of winning with the fact its main goal is winning the program’s first-ever CCS title? “That’s a good question,” Pfefferlen said. “We all know how rewarding it is and how hard it is to get to the level we did last year. So we try to enjoy everything we do and have a positive attitude about it. We’re all happy to put in the work because we know
how far it can take us.” And therein lies the root success of the Bulldogs: by focusing on the things they can control— being enthusiastic even amid the daily grind of practices, for instance— they’ve already displayed a championship attitude. Yes, winning a section title would be historic, but the players have already shown they can balance school, sports and other activities with a productivity few other teams—if any—can match. Pfefferlen, who earned the BVAL’s Junior of the Year for last season, carries a weighted 4.4 GPA and is also a part of the school’s ASB leadership program, meaning she’s on campus at 7 a.m. everyday for zero period. That’s some serious dedication, folks. And yet Pfefferlen isn’t an exception on this team; rather, she’s the rule. “We have some really high achievers,” she said. The seniors know it’s important to make the newcomers on the team feel welcome, as it will build team chemistry.
That’s why Pfefferlen said the team has multiple functions ranging from team sleepovers to breakfast, lunch or dinner outings. The relationships the players build off the field end up helping the team’s on-field cohesiveness. “We already had a good foundation, but we want to keep that strong and make it easier for freshmen or new players to join the team,” Pfefferlen said. “Going into this season it’s obvious we have really good chemistry.” The Bulldogs have a deep and talented roster, with several players capable of scoring on a moment’s notice. That means teams can’t focus on any one player, or they risk getting burned for that tactic. “We don’t have a best player on the team, but we have a number of girls who have tremendous skill and are difference-makers,” Thomas said. And that makes the Bulldogs downright dangerous and potent in every phase of the game. Driven to succeed, Sobrato is a

team has had to practice and play its “home” matches at Live Oak High this season. For the last couple of years, the players have done more fundraising events to help raise the necessary fees it takes to rent out time at the Sports Complex. They recently held a See’s Candy fundraiser, and last weekend they all gathered to make tamales to sell as part of another fundraiser. In January, they’re set to do a fundraiser at Applebee’s, in which they’ll sell tickets and serve customers and help clean up the restaurant. Thomas said he and the volunteer coaches put their coaching stipends directly back into the program, “so the girls don’t have to fundraise 7K (thousand) just to play soccer, which is kind of crazy considering our circumstances.” Thomas thanked Live Oak for working with them—“We get no love from anyone other than Live Oak,” he said—and that despite the team’s unusual situation, the
AFTER IT Emily Pfefferlen, seen here earlier in the season
against San Benito, has been a terrific all-around player. team on a mission. Not long after the loss to Presentation, the players were already talking about making it back to the section championship game and finishing the deal. ‘”We were all ready for this season to start,”
Pfefferlen said. “We said to each other, ‘OK, when does practice start again?’” It’s that type of attitude that has carried the Bulldogs this far, and something they’ll use in abundance as their quest for a section title continues.
Zhang banks on technical skills to win on the mat From page 19 or move down a class to 132 by the end of the regular season. Zhang said the highlight of his career so far was a 10-5 quarterfinal victory over Seth Goyal, the No. 2 seed at 132 pounds in last year’s CCS Championships. Even though Zhang lost his final three matches to place sixth, the
quarterfinal win was a nice breakthrough. As a freshman, Zhang took third in the league finals and 1-2 in the CCS Championships. “That moment was really nice because it was an underdog moment,” he said. “That match put me in a really good position to place. I learned a lot from last year, and I feel like all the experience I’ve gained
will be to my advantage. If I could win CCS, that would really be great.” Zhang has three older brothers, all of whom graduated from Sobrato High. They also either graduated from Cal Poly or are currently enrolled at the university in San Luis Obispo. They all played football at Sobrato, and Zhang has followed in their footsteps.
Zhang had a solid season playing receiver and safety for Sobrato, which ended up winning the BVAL’s West Valley Division. Zhang said growing up with three older brothers motivated him to improve and develop a passion for both football and wrestling. Zhang’s oldest brother, Zach, had a particularly strong
influence oh him. Zack is 6 years older than Harrison, who grew up watching Zach’s football games and wrestling matches. “Seeing my brothers wrestle and other older wrestlers made me want to be at their level one day, too,” he said. “They taught me well.” In Zhang’s first-ever tournament as a fifth
grader, he lost his first two matches. Instead of feeling defeated, however, Zhang grew stronger from the experience. That level of determination is evident in Zhang’s matches today, as he competes well. “It made me want to stick with wrestling and get better,” he said. And that’s exactly what Zhang has done.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF WILLIAM CHARLES KERSHAW CASE NO. 1 17PR181747 FILED: 11-26-2017. To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of: William Charles Kershaw, William Kershaw, Bill Kershaw. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Jennifer Paige Kershaw in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara. The PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that: Jennifer Paige Kershaw be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: 1-18-2018 Time: 9:00 a.m. Dept: 12, Superior Court of California County of Santa Clara, 191 N. First Street, San Jose, California, 95113. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Petitioner: 249 Mountain Springs Drive, San Jose, CA 95136, 408.375.5553. Publication Dates: Morgan Hill Times December 8, 15, 22, 2017.
