Top stories: Killer convicted, Carr charged ➝ Year in Review, 1

of nature, community activism, progress and, on occasion, controversy. There are usually two sides, if not more, to every story, and, as Morgan Hill’s favorite hometown newspaper, our reporters try to cover every angle of an issue that pops on the newsroom radar. Following is a recap of some of the most memorable stories from 2017, and how some of them are likely to pan out as 2018 begins.

Teen’s killer convicted, sentenced

Councilmember charged

Morgan Hill City Councilman Larry Carr’s colleagues and constituents were surprised to learn that prosecutors charged him with domestic battery in relation to a Nov. 25 incident at the home he shares with his longtime girlfriend in the city’s downtown. More research by the Times found that Carr, 48, pleaded no contest to an earlier domestic battery charge—involving the same victim—in 2015 at the couple’s previous home in Morgan Hill. He was also convicted in 1993, at the age of 24, of driving under the influence resulting in bodily injury in relation to a vehicle accident on Hale Avenue. Two occupants of the vehicle Carr collided with suffered numerous injuries. Carr has denied ever physically harming any woman, particularly in relation to the charges filed in 2015 and 2017. Both charges are misdemeanors, as was the DUI conviction. In 2015, Carr agreed to complete a counseling program, but did not receive a fine or jail time for the no contest conviction. Carr’s arraignment on the Nov. 24 domestic battery charge is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2018.

Anderson overflows

April showers might bring May flowers, but February’s heavy rains brought more than anyone bargained for, as Anderson Reservoir overflowed from its spillway for the first time since 2006. To make matters worse, an illprepared Santa Clara Valley Water District and City of San Jose did not anticipate Coyote Creek’s inability to hold the substantial

After a nearly four-month trial that lasted throughout the summer of 2017—and another four months of delays and challenges by the defendant—the man who killed 15-yearold Sierra LaMar was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole. Antolin Garcia Torres, 26, of Morgan Hill, was sentenced after a Dec. 12 hearing in which Sierra’s parents and other family members tearfully read statements directly to their daughter’s killer, pleading with him to reveal the location of the girl’s remains. A jury convicted Garcia Torres of murdering Sierra in June. The same jury also convicted him of three unrelated attempted carjackings in the parking lots of two Safeway stores in Morgan Hill, in which he targeted three different women in 2009. While the DA’s Office argued for the death penalty for Garcia Torres, the jury recommended life in prison. Sierra has been missing since March 16, 2012. She disappeared while she was walking to her school bus stop at the intersection of Palm and Dougherty avenues in north Morgan Hill. She was a sophomore at Sobrato High School at the time. While her remains have not been found, authorities are still

on alert for any sign of her whereabouts. Volunteer searcher Roger Nelson, of Gilroy, said it’s possible that the volunteer crews could schedule more search efforts, but only if they receive new leads.

CUTEST STORY? Perhaps the cutest story of 2017 surrounds a baby goat by the name of “Tanzi” being raised at

the Charter School of Morgan Hill. The Nigerian Dwarf goat, amongst a litter of four, was rejected by the mother after being briefly separated at birth. Students, staff and families stepped up and took turns taking care of “Tanzi,” who quickly became the toast of campus. Pictured above, CSMH third-grade classmates Ryan Persing, left, and Aiden Hidalgo, right, each hold a baby goat at the campus barn Feb. 13. runoff, as widespread flooding overtook South San Jose neighborhoods, which were evacuated with belongings left behind. The floods resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damages. This winter, the water district is planning to keep Anderson’s water levels low enough that it will not reach the spillway, even if we see similar downpours in the coming months. SCVWD officials have also noted that a scheduled retrofit of Anderson Dam will not only strengthen the earthen structure, but also minimize future flooding. Construction is set to begin in 2020.

Neighbors steamed over school project

Residents near a Peet Road and Mission Avenida site brought strong vocal opposition to Morgan Hill Unified School District’s plan to dig up tons of contaminated soil on a donated 10-acre parcel of land in the affluent northeast neighborhood to give way to a new elementary school. Assurances from school district leaders and state environmental experts did not quell the concerns of residents, who were forced to be schooled in the dangers of a banned pesticide called dieldrin that was found in dangerous levels in the

soil throughout the parcel. The state-approved plan to offhaul the toxic soil is on its way in 2018 and residents remain suspect of the method that they believe will allow harmful particles to be blown around in their neighborhood.

New president sparks local action

The national political climate heated up in the local community when it was discovered a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office opened in Morgan Hill. ➝ Year in Review, 4

THIS STORY HAS LEGS The Fasanos brought their unique family tradition to Morgan Hill in May 2017. For the last 60 years, Fasano family members, originally from the Central Valley, have competed in the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee—an annual event that dates back more than 100 years and even inspired Mark Twain’s short story, “Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Justin Fasano, pictured above outside the family’s Morgan Hill home shortly after the competition, cemented his name into family lore when he was crowned the 2017 Calaveras County Frog Jumping Champion with his frog named “Kermit.”

By midyear 2017, it was reported that finding a house in Morgan Hill for under $800,000 was like finding a needle in a haystack, as home sale prices skyrocketed to record highs locally and regionally. The median Morgan Hill home sales price in June 2017 was estimated at $860,000. Those values have steadily skyrocketed even as residential construction continues throughout Morgan Hill, and after the city council in April approved only 195 new homes for the 2019-20 fiscal year—a sharp reduction from the annual average of about 250 homes over the last decade.

Local organizations, including the Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers (MHFT), Services, Immigration Rights and Education Network (SIREN) and Community Agency for Resources and Advocacy Services (CARAS), banned together and planned three protests in front of the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) sub-office. It is located on Vineyard Court, just down the street from the Morgan Hill Police station. The protests were in response to executive orders and other policies put in place by President Donald Trump’s administration which attempt to vastly restrict immigration in the U.S. and deport those who are here undocumented. The president’s policies also inspired a successful lawsuit by Santa Clara County and San Francisco officials, in which an executive order prohibiting federal funds for undefined “sanctuary cities” was struck down.

DEBIT

With home and rental prices through the roof in 2017, it was no surprise that Santa Clara County saw a 13 percent increase in homelessness over a two-year span with a point-in-time census of 7,394, according to the county homeless count report. In Morgan Hill, the number of unsheltered homeless increased 379 percent from 81 in 2015

to 388 in 2017, according to that same report. Also, a growing trend of individuals living in Recreational Vehicles parked on the side of roads and in shopping centers becomes an issue throughout the county.

New animal shelter approved

County supervisors approved a $26 million budget to construct a 36,000-square foot, state-of-the-art, no-kill animal shelter in San Martin. The long overdue project, which will move the shelter out of its current facility on Murphy Avenue on airport grounds to behind the South County Office Building located at 80 Highland Ave., is expected to break ground in early 2019.

No love lost

The seemingly neverending war between local school district and charter school officials came to a head in late 2017 when Charter School of Morgan Hill sought approval to seek millions in state rehabilitation funds. While Morgan Hill Unified School District’s Board of Trustees supported the charter school’s play, district leadership attempted to derail their plans by passing along a failing grade for CSMH to the state authority in charge of distributing the Proposition 51 funds. It got testy at a Dec. 5 school board meeting, but ultimately the board majority rebuffed district staff and backed the charter in its request for more than $11 million in funds to fix up the aging Encinal school site. To be continued.

Beloved middle school teachers die

Students, faculty, alumni and the community lost Martin Murphy Middle School teacher Mary Francis, 61, and Britton Middle School teacher George Flores, 65— both veteran educators beloved by students and colleagues—in 2017. Francis died in a tragic car accident on her way to work. Flores succumbed to lymphatic cancer. While their lives were cut short, both left lasting legacies at their respective schools.

$50M remake for Britton Middle

The oldest and most rundown school in the district will be completely rebuilt in early 2018 after the school board approved the $50 million project, which includes a state-of-the-art student center and library. A ground-breaking in December, however, was postponed due to delays from the Department of State Architect. Phase 1, which includes two solar-ready, “Net Zero Energy” classroom buildings at the campus on Central Avenue on the north side of downtown Morgan Hill, is expected to break ground January 2018 with an August 2018 target for completion.

Building continues downtown

The ongoing development of downtown Morgan Hill is a story that persisted from 2016 throughout the entirety of 2017. The latest completed aspect of the city council’s years-long, $25 million effort to revitalize the neighborhood was three new parks, for which city officials and hundreds of residents celebrated a grand opening Dec. 2. Construction of various residential and commercial projects continues throughout the downtown, while some sites won’t see intensive construction until 2018 starts. In 2018, Frank Leal is expected to complete the 60-room Granada Hotel project (next door to the theater of the same name that he renovated last year), and Rocke and Glenda Garcia’s crews will begin construction of an 83-unit residential project. In the meantime, four new restaurants at the corner of Monterey Road and East Third Street— Willard Hicks, Opa, Mo’s and Tac-Oh!—are expected to be open by January. Public improvements associated with this revitalization— including assistance for private developers— have been funded by $25 million in leftover Redevelopment Agency funds. City officials have said the expenses have generated more than $60 million in private developer investment downtown.

OPINION FROM THE WEB Re: ‘Mayor: $1.3M home loan for city manager a win-win’ She makes $230k per year and she needs a low interest loan of $1.3 million to move from Gilroy to Morgan Hill?! They should subtract from the loan what she makes on the sale of her Gilroy Home or maybe she will just rent that home out. Morgan Hill citizens, you are being taken for a ride… James Strauss via Facebook

If people here are willing to get a group together to protest I'm in. I think they have done this before and they clearly don't respond or care about comments on FB so I think it's time we be heard at a city council meeting. Traci Monroe-Valdez via Facebook

Looks like the city will actually benefit from such an investment. I don’t see what all the bad blood is about. Here is an individual whose job it is to manage all aspects of the city’s operations and her “soon-to-be” neighbors seems as if they’d rather tar and feather her. All she wants to do is live in the same community she serves...and you all know how expensive it is to purchase here...why do you all act so shocked as such a loan amount or the fact the money comes from city coffers? Please don’t tell me that if any of you qualified to take on a position such as hers...and was offered such loan terms as a benefit...you wouldn’t jump at the chance.

While the eclipse was only partially visible from Morgan Hill—and only with indirect viewing equipment—the phenomenon generated the Times’ readersubmitted Photo of the Year, captured by local resident Andrew Remer. Remer shot the photo from atop the downtown Morgan Hill garage, where Times staff and other eclipse watchers set up to watch the eclipse the morning of Aug.

21. Remer used some household items to create a “last minute” solar lens for his Nikon Coolpix camera, which he set up on a tripod to capture crisp, clear images of the crescentshaped sun as the moon partially obscured its light during the celestial event. “At the last minute, I scrambled around looking for my old welding helmet,” Remer explained after he sent a photo to the Times. “I removed and cleaned the lens and cut up a Snapple bottle. It just happened to fit perfectly. I pushed the lens through (the end of the bottle) and added some duct tape to keep out excess light and, voila, I had a cheap and easy solar lens for (my) camera in five minutes.”

I had a cheap and easy solar lens for (my) camera in five minutes.

Re: ‘Carr reacts to recent reports in social media statement’ I don’t know Mr. Carr, but it seems that he is being supported by people who do, including his former wife, which is rare. There may be more to this story than we know, so it is a little early to be asking him to step down. His colleagues are probably in the best position to determine if or when he should leave. “joden” via morganhilltimes.com

I wish to ask the public a question, even IF the allegations are even partially true, when was the last time you lost your temper in a moment of high emotional exchange? I am a Democratic Activist married to a Fox News, Trump loving husband. Now we have very loud and heated arguments. I have been known to throw a lamp or two in the direction of the offending TV. I suppose someone should have called the police on me but frankly stuff happens! Larry's former wife said volumes when she told the press that nothing resembling violence had ever happened in the 13 years of their marriage. Anne Horner, I like and respect you, but what happened to "you are innocent until proven guilty"? I for one believe Larry and really appreciated his statement. I have great respect for a man that has given so much of his private time to public service! He has unselfishly given his time and experience to our City, Larry has always been very thoughtful and agonizes over difficult decisions. I want you all to know that I stand in firm support of Larry and will continue that stand until he is proven guilty of a misdemeanor and even then I will simply forgive Larry for being human! “Swanee” via morganhilltimes.com

POLICE BRIEFS Store customers complain of mysterious fumes Firefighters, paramedics and police responded to Walmart, 170 Cochrane Plaza, Christmas Eve in response to reports of a mysterious odor, gas or chemical that briefly filled the store, according to Morgan Hill police.

A resident who saw the emergency vehicles in the parking lot said the store closed for the evening after Wal-mart was evacuated. Wal-mart did not immediately respond to a phone call. Guerrero said the coughinducing substance eventually cleared out of the store.

Police seek info on armed robbery suspect Police are looking for a man caught on camera who allegedly robbed an eyewear store and lounge in south Morgan Hill at gunpoint on Christmas Eve. The unidentified man walked into EYEfiniTEA Optique & Lounge, located at 15700 Monterey Road, wearing a surgical mask over his nose and mouth Dec. 24. He showed store employees a gun in his waistband and demanded money, according to a post on Morgan Hill Police Department’s Facebook page.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, about 5-feet, 6-inches tall and about 26 to 27 years old, according to police. He was wearing a blue medical mask and a dark gray shirt. Police and the staff at EYEfiniTEA released surveillance camera photos of the suspect, and are asking the public for help identifying him. Special to the Times

About 4:20pm Dec. 24, emergency personnel responded to the store on reports that shoppers inside the store were coughing due to the unidentified fumes, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Carlos Guerrero. The store was evacuated. “As soon as they walked outside into the fresh air, they were fine,” Guerrero said.

Nobody who complained of symptoms was hospitalized or in need of further medical treatment, according to police. Authorities thought someone might have sprayed some type of gas or chemical into the store’s vent system, but Guerrero said firefighters could not identify a substance.

DO YOU KNOW THIS MAN? Police say the man pictured above in surveillance footage from EYEfiniTEA robbed the store in south Morgan Hill at gunpoint on Christmas Eve.

Students learn to help the community Students, 1

Beautifying the downtown

While Gion can get around independently, the other students work in groups rotating between job sites at Rosy’s At The Beach, GVA Cafe and Goodwill. Each group is accompanied by Barbettini or one of his aides throughout their work day. Once those duties are fulfilled, the students all meet up for this

semester’s main vocation, which is to help beautify the downtown area. Barbettini developed a collaborative partnership with the City of Morgan Hill for this task. “It’s going great. It’s great to have a group of students who are excited about helping out and cleaning up the downtown,” said Keri Russell, the city’s maintenance services coordinator. “It’s a win-win for both sides. The students are able to get life skills under their belt and they’re helping overall to beautify our downtown.” The city supplies the students with trash-grabbers, brooms, shovels and other equipment to help “maintain the beautification of the downtown area,” Barbettini explained. “It’s really a great collaboration. They’re doing really well with that.” The students get compensated for their hours (up to 10 per month) through the Workability 1 program, which is funded by the State Department of Rehabilitation. Although they are classified as volunteers, they receive a salary of $10.50 per hour for their work. The post-secondary program does not get any additional funding from the school district and uses their paychecks to fund class

activities and excursions like a trip to the San Jose Tech Museum. “The ultimate goal is to find them some sort of part-time employment before they transition out of the program,” said Barbettini, who is already the third instructor to run the four-year-old post-ed program and the first to stick around for a second year. “It’s nice to be downtown. The kids really enjoy that work.” Mondays are reserved for getting the students—who each have varying levels of disabilities from moderate to severe—the support services they need such as speech therapy. Fridays are fun days, where the class embarks on class trips. “It’s cool,” said 18-year-old Riley Swartz, a first-year student who previously attended Live Oak High School. “I like going to Rosy’s.” At Rosy’s, the students sweep the outside patio area and set up the place settings and chairs for the tables. Barbettini’s program uses four quadrants of progression with different goals every step to help give each student as much life skills as possible before they transition out. First (ages 18 to 19), he assesses the student’s abilities and sets individual goals for them. Next (ages 19

to 20), the students start working toward those goals, while Barbettini evaluates their growth and if the plan needs adjustment. Following that (ages 20 to 21), they stress the transition to independent living and what’s next for them outside of class. Finally (ages 21 to 22), the students are transitioned out. Barbettini also takes his students off campus to explore the community, work on transportation and situational awareness skills in taking the Valley Transportation

They practice how to safely cross the street, all in an effort to build self-confidence. “We work within job sites within the community that have potential for sustainability where we can work with them for a long time,” Barbettini said. “The City of Morgan Hill community beautification project is giving students vocation skills while, at the same time, promoting inclusion for individuals with special needs.”

“He’s fully independent now. It’s awesome,” Barbettini continued. “He’s really excelled. I’m really proud of him.” Gion is one of 10 students in Barbettini’s post-secondary class this year, a program sponsored by Morgan Hill Unified School District. The class size has doubled in just one year with three part-time helpers in the classroom. Barbettini works with his students, who range in ages from 18 to 22 and are transferred in from Live Oak and Sobrato high schools. He helps build confidence, feed independence and advance life skills. A major objective is to build a relationship with local businesses and organizations through the student’s on-site volunteerism, with the hope of acquiring a part-time job.

LETHAL 1V1 Karlie Lema, a Live Oak High freshman forward, has 12 goals in just five games this season. Lema, who recently made a verbal commitment to play at Cal, has impressed Acorns coach Tony Vasquez with a competitive drive and ability to elevate her teammates’ play. PREP SOCCER

Lema is the real deal LIVE OAK HIGH FRESHMAN SENSATION LIVES UP TO THE HYPE emanuel lee Sports Editor

Tony Vasquez is in his 20th season as the coach of the Live Oak High girls soccer team, and there’s something noticeably different at the Acorns’ games this year. “I’ve never had college coaches come watch high school games the way they have this season,” Vasquez said. Mind you, this is no small feat considering college coaches appear more often at showcase

club tournaments than high school contests. But there’s one swift reason why those coaches are showing up at Live Oak matches this season: Karlie Lema. The freshman sensation—the 5-foot-9 Lema has made a verbal commitment to play at Cal—entered the week with an astounding 12 goals in just five games, which is even more impressive considering teams always have two to three defenders marking her every move. When high-profile talents arrive on the high school scene, they sometimes struggle adjusting to the high school game— but not for the reasons that you might think. Competitionwise, players like Lema are facing top-notch talent every weekend. But it’s the social dynamics and expectations that sometimes derail a promising talent

in the beginning at the prep level. Not so with Lema, who seemingly has the maturity of an athlete well beyond her years. “If teams are dropping back and trying to take runs at me, I know I have to stay patient and not get frustrated,” Lema said. “A lot of it is a mental game because sometimes the opposing team will try to push me or take me out, so I have to stay calm and not get too mad. I try to play the ball to my teammates as much as possible so we can get in on the goal or make some combos and get to the goal instead of me taking it up by myself.” Vasquez has been impressed that Lema has maintained a high level of play so far. “Most of the time even the best freshmen struggle to adjust to a lot of things,” he said. “So far she has not struggled, which is

very rare to be honest with you.” Lema is an all-around talent who possesses tremendous speed—she’s a three-time Junior Olympics participant in track and field—while also having the ability to kick effectively with both feet, see the field of play and unleash shots in rapid-fire fashion. Although Lema’s physical skills are extraordinary, it’s her unbelievable drive and competitiveness that sets her apart. Vasquez, who also coaches Lema for the Orchard Valley Revolution 15-and-under team, gave a great example of just how much Lema desires to be the best. “About a year ago we’re playing a game called World Cup, something she loves to play,” he said. “I was actually in the game and talking a little trash because I like to talk to the girls and get ➝ Lema, page 20

KARLIE LEMA Early commitment The Live Oak High freshman sensation continues to attract interest from Division I programs, but she recently made a verbal commitment to play at Cal. At 5-foot-9 and still growing, there’s plenty to like about Lema’s game and her vast potential. Highly skilled Lema can do it all, as she possesses speed, vision and the ability to unleash shots with pinpoint accuracy. Lema also makes her teammates better, as she routinely draws two to three defenders her way.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Acorns roar back to beat Sobrato emanuel lee Sports Editor

Robert Eliason

EAGLE EYE Live Oak’s Adrianne Gomez looks to pass in the team’s 42-37 win over Sobrato on Dec. 21.

In front of a raucous crowd that made this Dec. 21 non-league game feel more like a state championship title contest, the Live Oak girls basketball team produced a 42-37 comeback win over Sobrato in a game that lived up to its billing and then some. It’s a game that neither of the Morgan Hill schools will forget, for different reasons. The Acorns (5-4) used a ferocious fourth-quarter rally in upending their Morgan Hill rival,

outscoring the Bulldogs 16-5 in the final 5 ½ minutes to post an impressive victory. “The girls will always remember the atmosphere more then the wins or losses,” Live Oak coach Mike Kiefer said. “It was all about who could make the plays at the end.” And that was Live Oak, which received 11 points each from Grace Smith and Adrianne Gomez and eight points from Raegan Kirk. The Acorns won despite shooting only 24 percent

(12-of-51) from the floor. Live Oak was able to get it done by clamping down defensively and being strong on the glass in the fourth quarter. “We always preach that defense wins games and rebounding wins championships,” Kiefer said. “Our defense and rebounding was key at the end. We were able to force them into bad shots and turnovers, and that in turn helped our offense flow when it counted.” So what was the difference for the Acorns in the

first three quarters compared to the final eight minutes? A grittier, controlled effort. “When we needed energy and effort, the girls gutted it out and found something deep inside and were able to pull through,” Kiefer said. “Just having that heart, effort and desire to show they really wanted this one bad said a lot about their character. I think we’re still trying to find our identity, but this would be a good place to start.” ➝ Acorns, page 20

MORGAN HILL TIMES

DECEMBER 29, 2017

Live Oak freshman Lema off to a spectacular start hopes to lead the Acorns to a league championship and deep playoff run. In last year’s Junior Olympics, Lema finished third in the 200-meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump in her age group. Lema also excels in the classroom, as she recently completed the first semester with straight A’s. “I’m most proud of being able to keep my grades up and playing soccer at the same time,” she said. Vasquez was effusive in his praise for Lema, whose indefatigable work ethic is the main reason for her success on and off the field. “She’s one of those top 5, top 10 percent of kids who are smart, educated and a great athlete all mixed in one,” Vasquez said. “That’s Karlie, and it’s been such a blessing to

coach her. Her work ethic at practices is something, and I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as she does. She sets the tone in practices because of her work rate and intensity level.” Although it’s no longer rare for high school freshmen to make a verbal commitment to play for a college, it’s still a feat in itself because it means big-time programs see tremendous potential and talent in the player. Lema loves everything about Cal, having gone to one of its soccer camps. Her skills should fit right in at the D1 level. One thing is for certain: Lema will continue to work hard to improve, and complacency won’t be an issue. “I’ve always wanted to win and be the best, and the only way to do that is to work for it,” she said.

Jump From 19 under their skin a little bit. There were two teams left—my team and her team. Our team beat her team, and she was so mad. I don’t want to say she was crying, but she had this look of frustration in this fun practice time. Everyone was laughing, but she took it so personally. That was the moment I knew she just hates to lose.” When it comes to sorts, the only time Lema acts like a freshman is when college coaches are in the stands. “I get a little nervous when I know they’re there,” she said. Lema is also is a discovery/guest player for Mountain View Los Altos Soccer Club, meaning she can play for the team in showcases and tournaments. The fleet-footed striker

ON THE RUN Opponents are used to chasing Karlie Lema, the Live Oak High freshman whose speed makes her a breakaway threat to score every time she touches the ball.

Live Oak roars back to beat crosstown rival Sobrato Marisa Chu have made an impact at certain points in the season. Even though Kiefer preached to his players that they had to treat Sobrato like it was just another game, the raucous atmosphere made it almost impossible for the players to take that message to heart— at least on the opening tip. “It took us a while to settle down and just play the game,” Kiefer said. “I’m really proud of the girls for what they did in the fourth quarter. They fought for every possession, and as a coach you hope this carries over.” Alas, the Acorns had to play the very next night, and the result was a 56-51 loss

to a solid Branham team. Smith had 23 points and Gomez 10 in defeat. Despite the loss, Kiefer is optimistic that the Acorns might have discovered something about themselves in the win over Sobrato, which is an A-league team as part of the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mount Hamilton Division. Live Oak is part of the BVAL’s B-league Santa Teresa East Division. “I tell the girls to take that as fuel for fire,” Kiefer said. “No one believes in us other than ourselves, so every night we have to play with a chip on our shoulder with the attitude that we don’t get any respect.”

Robert Eliason

Jump From 19 Live Oak runs a multiple point offense in which three or four players are point forwards or guards and are accompanied by one post player. Smith, a senior guard and one of the team’s leaders, averages 17 points per game. Gomez, a sophomore, averages 12 points a game. Kirk, a freshman, hit two of the biggest shots of the game, a 3-pointer that tied things up late in the fourth and a pull-up jumper that put the team ahead for good. In addition to the aforementioned players, Anabela Stewart, Cameron O’Connell, Jennifer Poonia, Alexis Munson and

TO THE BASKET Live Oak High’s Grace Smith drives in for two of her 11 points in a 42-37

win over Sobrato on Dec. 21. The Acorns outscored the Bulldogs 16-7 in the fourth quarter.

The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust, with interest and late charges thereon, as provided in the note(s), advances, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, interest thereon, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee for the total amount (at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale) reasonably estimated to be set forth below. The amount may be greater on the day of sale. BENEFICIARY MAY ELECT TO BID LESS THAN THE TOTAL AMOUNT DUE. Trustor(s): DAVID EDWARD TOLSON, A SINGLE PERSON Recorded: 10/31/2008 as Instrument No. 20034803 of Official Records in the office of the Recorder of SANTA CLARA County, California; Date of Sale: 1/24/2018 at 9:00 AM Place of Sale: At the Gated North Market Street Entrance to the Santa Clara County Superior Courthouse. 191 N. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-17-777203-JB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only.
