If you happen to be reading this story online in Morgan Hill, you might be waiting for the rest of it to load. If so, you probably will not be surprised that Morgan Hill's internet received a "D" grade from the East Bay and Central Coast Broadband Consortia. The City of Morgan Hill recognized the problem, and is working to create a private/public partnership with local internet providers to pull the city into the modern age. The city earned a "D" because only Charter Spectrum met the California Public Utilities Commission’s benchmark of minimum standards of 6 megabits per second Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload speeds. While this may prove an annoyance for residents, it is a downright impediment to businesses who often require much faster upload

One week after its grand opening, Pound 4 Pound Sports Fitness, the new boxing gym on Monterey Street in Gilroy was popping with the sounds of the sweet science. Whap, whap—swap—pap, pap, pap! “We’re here to build

champions,” said Ruben Guerrero before the day sparring sessions started at the new gym opened by him and his Maricela, parents of former multiple world boxing champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. It was tough to tell that fighters Oscar Escandon and Pedro Cruz were sparing. Even with head and body padding, the shots each threw and absorbed appeared, and sounded, like both were fighting at full steam. “I’d say they’re at 90 percent speed and 50 percent power right

now,” Robert Guerrero said. Like the fighters, Pound 4 Pound looks and sounds like it’s on full power. With the boxing ring, dozens of heavy bags, speed bags, mats, mitts, the new gym at 7648 Monterey St is slick, slim and powerful, just like multiple former world champion Robert Guerrero. It took about seven months to get to opening day, but there’s more to come. “I’m turning this whole area back here into a full gym, with weights, cardio machines and a place for Crossfit,” Ruben

Guerrero said while touring the unfinished back half of the building which had been the Discount Surplus store. “We get kids from the streets, but we also take in kids from the YMCA and the Gilroy Youth Alliance,” Maricela said. “ We’ve also reached out to local high schools and the Gilroy Department of Parks and Recreation. We want to get kids off the street and keep them out of trouble.” What makes Pound 4 Pound ➝ Pound for Pound, 17

City buys downtown site for new housing APARTMENTS ON DEPOT STREET TO BE DEMOLISHED Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

The City of Morgan Hill is moving ahead to purchase the property at 17545 Depot Street for $925,000. The eventual intention of the city is to demolish the building and used the combined area, along with the cleared lot at 85 East First Street, to construct an affordable housing project. When the city bought the property at 50 East First Street last year in a probate sale, Ralph Bader, the owner of the building at 17545 Depot Street— which contains four onebedroom apartments— approached the city to inquire if they would be

interested in buying his property as well. The interest was mutual, and the Morgan Hill City Council voted that city staff should go ahead and buy the Depot Street property, which Valbridge/Hulberg Property Advisors valued at $905,000. After negotiations with Bader the city agreed to purchase price for $925,000, 2 percent higher than the appraisal amount. The city used funds from the Housing Fund to purchase the property and is now seeking nonprofit developers to construct affordable housing on the 17,700 square feet of property. According to documents made available at the April 4 Morgan Hill City Council meeting, “The property is strategically situated in the downtown

core with easy access to transit, parks, amenities, and services, in a walkable environment.” "It was bought using a housing fund, which stipulated that the money needs to be used for affordable housing," said Assistant City Manager Leslie Little. The building at 17545 Depot Street is a single story, wood-framed building, built in 1967, with a large concrete patio and a former garage that was converted into an apartment. Following necessary environmental studies, the city must give Bader sufficient time to notify tenants—about three months—before demolition. After that, the site will be used for temporary parking until construction of the affordable housing project begins.

MH considers a loan to save BookSmart

$925K PROPERTY The apartment building at 17545 Depot Street, pictured here on April 10, will be purchased by the City of Morgan Hill for $925,000. The city plans to demolish the structures on the site and use the property for temporary parking, then contract with a nonprofit developer to build new affordable housing.

BookSmart wrote its final chapter. But wait, there's more. A twist, in what could be a cliffhanger over the fate of the longtime Morgan Hill mainstay, the City Council voted 3-2 April 4 to explore a potential bridge loan that could save BookSmart from imminent closure. But the store’s owners aren't out of the woods yet. Not even close. For the first time in the history of Morgan Hill, the city is considering issuing a loan to a private business. If the council approves the transaction, it would be a $175,000 loan to BookSmart, which would come out of the general fund. Mayor Steve Tate and Mayor Pro Tem Rich Constantine voted against the action, citing that BookSmart would be out of business by the time a loan could be secured. But, the people spoke, and Councilmembers Rene Spring, Larry Carr and Caitlin Robinett Jachimowicz

listened, and they voted to explore a stay of execution for BookSmart. Aside from publically driven fundraising, BookSmart must prove that a loan of money will not just stave off the creditor wolves in the short term, but show that long-term fiscal solvency will make good that BookSmart can pay back its loans. “We think there’s going to be a lot of work ahead of us to get the information that is needed, and a plan in place,” BookSmart coowner Brad Jones said. “We are hopeful, but we don’t think the city will be a pushover. They are very careful about using general funds, especially to help an individual business.” Owners Cinda Meister and Jones say that business as usual at their new location at 1295 E. Dunne Ave. has been fine. It pays the bills. It's the debt they incurred during the move and transition—credit card, cash advances and personal loans—that has swallowed BookSmart's future. “Whatever loan could be arranged, this has never been done before,” said Morgan Hill City Manager Christina Turner. BookSmart had previously applied for and was denied a loan from the Grow Morgan Hill

Fund, which is managed by the National Development Council. Funds for the Grow Morgan Hill Fund came from the remnants of the former Redevelopment Agency. The National Development Council decides who qualifies for loans, and because of a combination of financial considerations, BookSmart did not qualify for a loan. "There are some highinterest loans and late payments that the Grow Morgan Hill Fund would need to see retired and put in good status and to show that that pattern would not be repeated," Morgan Hill Communications and Engagement Manager Maureen Tobin said. The city must also determine if issuing a loan of public money from the general fund to a private business is legal. “Part of our due diligence is to make sure it is legal, and typically these kinds of loans require is to make sure it is in the public interest,” Turner said. As city staff works to determine if they should issue a loan to BookSmart, they will also work preparing the city’s two-year budget. Like the rest of the story, only time will tell. “We haven't set a timeline yet, and it will take the city some time to review their finances,” Turner said.

The statewide campaign also aligns with the Morgan Hill City Council’s goal of reducing collisions and eliminating traffic related deaths, reads the press release. Distracted driving, police advice, is “100 percent avoidable, but it continues to be a serious problem among drivers.” Police urge all motorists to silence their cell phones while driving and devote all their attention to the roadway. Adults should remind any new or inexperienced drivers in their household of the dangers of distracted driving. California drivers younger than 18 are prohibited from using a cell phone or hands-free device while operating a vehicle. Adult drivers may only use a hands-free device if they

Driving while texting or talking on a hand-held phone is dangerous. That’s the message that Morgan Hill Police and other law enforcement agencies hope to get across throughout the month of April, which is recognized as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. During the month, MHPD, the Office of Traffic Safety and agencies throughout the state will work together to end distracted driving through education, and raise awareness about the associated dangers, according to an April 4 press release from

must use any personal electronic device while driving. Other safety tips offered by MHPD include: • Never text and drive; • Don’t text or call others when you know they are likely to be driving; • Don’t program your GPS or other devices while driving; • Pull over and stop to read maps. It has been 10 years since “hands-free” became the state law. In the last three years, California traffic officers have issued hundreds of thousands of tickets to drivers for texting or calling on a handheld cell phone, according to police. A ticket for a first offense of driving while using a hand-held device is about $150, while a second or subsequent ticket can cost the same driver more than $250.

The California Highway Patrol will recognize two men—one a Morgan Hill resident—for saving the lives of two people involved in a 2017 traffic accident, according to authorities. An awards ceremony for Jose Perez, of Morgan Hill, will take place on a date to be announced at the Hollister-Gilroy Area CHP office, 740 Renz Lane. Alexander Pittaro, of Sen. Bill Monning’s office, as well as CHP Coastal Division Chief L.D. Maples, Assistant Chief Paul Vincent

and Capt. Scott E. Parker will present Perez with the CHP Commissioner’s Medal of Distinction Award. To be recognized at a separate ceremony is Vidal Flores, who helped Perez remove two occupants from a burning vehicle in the moments after the same accident, which took place in unincorporated Gilroy. About 12pm Jan. 21, 2017, a head-on collision resulting in a fatality occurred on SR 152 east of San Felipe Road, according to authorities. A 2002 Mercedes and 2005 Ford pickup had collided into each other. A third vehicle, a 2012 Scion sedan, was also involved in the accident. The driver and passenger of the Ford suffered major injuries to their lower extremities as a result of the

collision, and were incapacitated, according to authorities. Perez and Flores were passing by the scene in their respective vehicles moments after the accident, and stopped to help. The two safely removed both occupants from the Ford, police said. Minutes after the Good Samaritans removed the occupants out and away from the vehicle, the passenger compartment of the Ford became fully engulfed in flames, according to the CHP. “If not for the selfless acts of Jose Perez and Vidal Flores, both the driver and passenger of the Ford pickup would have perished in the flames,” reads a press release from the CHP. Flores will also receive the Medal of Distinction at a separate ceremony, authorities said.

County needs up to 6,000 poll workers for vote BILINGUAL POSITIONS IN 19 LANGUAGES ARE AVAILABLE Staff Report

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office has issued a call for 5,000 to 6,000 election officers to serve in the 824 polling places for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election. Bilingual support is

sought in 19 different languages. In addition to Election Day workers, the County Registrar’s office is hiring full-time temporary positions for its Early Vote Centers that open 10 days before the election. These officers will receive three weeks of training to operate the seven full-service facilities around the county. Previous clerical experience is required for Early Vote Center workers. Registrar of Voters

Shannon Bushey emphasized that state and federal election laws require bilingual poll staff based on the percentage of the population who speak languages other than English at home. “We strive to ensure that voters receive assistance in their mother tongue when needed,” Bushey said. Election Officers will be stationed at polling places throughout the County on Election Day to answer

procedural questions and otherwise help voters exercise their voting rights. “Engaging sufficient numbers of election officers is essential to serving our diverse society,” Bushey said. “At the same time, spending a day as an election officer is an outstanding way to see and support democracy in action.” Bilingual individuals are needed who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese (Cantonese,

Mandarin, Taiwanese), Tagalog, Korean, Russian, Farsi, Punjabi, Japanese, Hindi, Telugu, Portuguese, Khmer, Syriac, Tamil, Gujarati and Nepali. Anyone can be an election officer as long as they are a U.S. citizen and registered voter, a legal permanent resident 18 or older, or high school student at least 16 years old. Election officers will receive a stipend of up to $200 for their services, including a

bonus for being bilingual. Training is provided and classes will begin soon. Early Vote Center applicants have additional vetting as potential County employees and are encouraged to apply immediately. For more information, contact the Registrar of Voters’ Office at 1-408299-POLL (7655). Online sign-up for election officers is available under the “Volunteer” tab at sccvote.org.

Save a life by signing up to be an organ donor

T

he month of April has been designated as National Donate Life Month to encourage Americans to register as organ donors, educate our communities about the need for organ donations and celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. The need for organ, eye or tissue donors is ongoing and can potentially save someone’s life. Unfortunately, while 95 percent of Americans have no issue with registering to be a donor, only 54 percent are actually registered to donate their organs. The gap between those willing to donate and those who are registered donors contributes to the 115,000-person waiting list for organs. Every day, 22 people die waiting on the list. Organ donation after death brings comfort and hope to families by turning a tragedy into renewed life. In 2016 alone, 33,600 patients were given the gift of life by transplants from willing donors. Signing up to be an organ donor is as easy as marking a “Yes” box at the DMV when getting or renewing your driver’s license or ID card. You can also sign up online at donatelife. net/register/. People of any age, background, or medical history can become donors after death, and there is absolutely no cost to donors or their families. The process to establish whether your

remains are eligible for donations is thorough and done independently from the transplant process.

People of any age, background, or medical history can become donors after death, and there is absolutely no cost to donors or their families. Also, becoming a donor does not impede or change funeral arrangements. Additionally, in some instances, you can even become a living donor and donate a portion of your liver, lung, pancreas or a kidney. This April, please reflect on the lives of those touched by donation and transplantation, and join me as you register to become an organ donor. Learn more about National Donate Life month at donatelife.net or donatelifecalifornia.org/. Sen. Bill Monning represents the 17th State Senate District, which includes all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties.

Although many of the farm fields and orchards that once covered the valley floor are long since gone, agriculture remains an important part of Santa Clara County’s heritage and its future. As in the past, the availability of water to grow crops and raise livestock affects individual farmers and ranchers as well as the economy of our county. Because of this, the Santa Clara Valley Water District continues to offer support to farmers, through the open space credit, which offers a credit on water rates to account for the benefits the larger community receives from that open space. Additionally, the district supports agriculture through its planning efforts performed in partnership with local jurisdictions such as the South County Recycled Water Master Plan. Recently updated, this master plan, completed in partnership with the South County Regional Wastewater Authority (SCRWA) and cooperation with the cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill, addresses a variety of options for expanding the use of recycled water in South County. Most of the farming in Santa Clara County takes place in the southern portion of the county, where farmers, residents and businesses rely almost entirely on groundwater. The amount of groundwater pumped each year far exceeds what is replenished naturally by rainfall and other sources. So, the water district carefully replenishes the groundwater basin there, to ensure there is enough water. We do this using a mixture of water from local reservoirs and water imported to our county through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. In addition to refilling the groundwater basin through percolation ponds and creeks, the water district also works to reduce the amount of water that needs to be pumped through water conservation and recycled water programs. For example, every gallon of recycled water used is a gallon of groundwater that doesn’t need to be pumped. To fund and implement the projects in the master plan, the district hopes to continue our partnership with the two cities and SCRWA, with the eventual goal of recycling 100 percent of the wastewater treated in South County, thereby decreasing local reliance on groundwater and bolstering our water supply. Richard P. Santos is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Santa Clara Valley Water District. Richard Varela is Director of District 1 of the SCVWD. They can be reached at board@ valleywater.org.

‘Sue’s Story’ begins long journey to cure DOCUMENTARY CENTERS ON MH RESIDENT’S STRUGGLE, MISSION Michael Moore Editor

Michael Moore

The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, which ended Sunday night in Morgan Hill, featured a wide variety of exclusive screenings of original films created by artists from all over the world. But it was a South County-produced documentary about a Morgan Hill woman determined to raise awareness of a common, yet littleknown form of dementia that tugged at the heartstrings of local spectators. “Sue’s Story” is a 38-minute documentary about Sue Berghoff and her family, and how they reacted to her diagnosis in early 2017 of Lewy Body Dementia. The documentary—which debuted to the public for PJIFF April 6 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse— chronicles Berghoff ’s initial frustration with her mysterious symptoms, to disbelief at her diagnosis, to her steadfast determination to push for more awareness of LBD. Sue and husband Chuck Berghoff ’s ultimate goal—shared by prominent members of the Bay Area medical community interviewed in the documentary—is to generate funding for research that might lead to a cure. Chuck Berghoff, who travels to San Mateo once a month for an LBD support group, said they’re hoping to expand resources to South County—in particular, Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy. “We’ve struck a nerve in that we’re working on broadening awareness of a disease we had never

heard of 14 months ago,” said Chuck Berghoff, who has been a Rotary Club of Morgan Hill member since shortly after the couple moved here six years ago. “The way you cure a disease like this is you start with awareness, and that drives funding support, ultimately (leading) to a pharmaceutical company developing a cure.” “Sue’s Story” features interviews with the Berghoffs, as well as their children, friends and the Bay Area doctors who are leading the research and support efforts for LBD patients and their families. Footage includes clips of a “Pizza In Paradise” fundraiser that the Berghoffs held at their west Morgan Hill home in September 2017, which more than 100 people attended and raised more than $40,000 for LBD research and support efforts. “Sue’s Story” was produced, written, shot and edited by South County media veterans Robin Shepherd, L. Mattock Scariot and Nils Myers. Scariot and Myers are the owners of 152 West Productions, and have long been involved in the PJIFF. Scariot was director of the 2018 festival, which started April 5 and wrapped up Sunday at the Granada Theater in downtown Morgan Hill. For the first time in its 14-year history, the growing festival spanned multiple venues in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. “Sue’s Story” was invited to the PJIFF by the festival organizers, and thus it was not eligible for judges’ awards. However, PJIFF audience members voted it the festival’s “Best Documentary,” Scariot said. LBD is a neurodegenerative brain disease, and the second-most prevalent form of dementia (Alzheimer’s being the most common). There is no cure or effective

An autopsy of famous actor Robin Williams’ brain revealed he suffered from LBD. In “Sue’s Story,” Sue Berghoff ’s children and longtime friend Mary Sue Garcia commented on the tragedy of a highly educated, intelligent, driven woman like Berghoff—a Bay Area high-tech professional for more than 30 years—being afflicted with a disease that impacts cognitive functions. But they also commented that they weren’t surprised how she responded with a determination to make a difference

so that future LBD patients might not have to suffer as those before her have. “This is the most important thing I feel like I’ve done in my life,” Sue Berghoff, also an active member of the Morgan Hill chapter of the American Association of University Women, said in “Sue’s Story.” After “Sue’s Story” screened April 6, the film’s creators and interviewees sat for a Q&A panel with the audience. Included on the panel were the Berghoffs, Garcia, Dr. Kathleen Poston of the Stanford Neurology and Neuroscience Center and Robin Riddle of the Brain Support Network. Shepherd

and Scariot were also on stage to answer questions. Chuck Berghoff said on-stage during the Q&A, “This film is just the beginning of our journey (to) grow and pursue research funding.” Shepherd said Tuesday that while “Sue’s Story” was in production, the Friends of the Morgan Hill Senior Center donated $10,000 to the Lewy Body Dementia Awareness & Research Fund, which was recently established under the Morgan Hill Community Foundation. “That was a huge help in getting us started,” Shepherd said. The research fund continues to accept donations,

Uvas Canyon County Park reopens PARKING RESERVATIONS REQUIRED ON WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS Staff report

Santa Clara County Parks

Uvas Canyon County Park has reopened after heavy rains last winter forced its closure for more than a year, and reservations for parking are now required on weekends and holidays, according to authorities. In February 2017, torrential storms caused so much damage to Croy Road—the rural mountain road that leads into Uvas Canyon— that it was impassable to most vehicles, according to Santa Clara County Parks staff. However, the county roads department has completed the repairs, and Uvas Canyon County Park is now open. To help ease the parking and traffic situation at the park and on Croy Road,

the parks department has implemented a weekend and holiday parking reservation system, starting Saturday, April 7. Visitors will now have to book a parking spot in advance for a $6 vehicle entry fee on weekends and holidays. The new reservation process will be in effect through June, or as long as visitation remains high. Park visitors who wish to park their vehicle in the park parking lot will have two parking time slots to choose from: 70 spaces will be available from 8am to noon; and 55 spaces will be available for a second window from 1pm to 5pm. All parking requests must be completed before 8pm the evening before visiting the park. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Visitors who have purchased annual passes can call the reservation line and ask for the parking fee to be waived after

with their campsite reservation, according to parks staff. To make a reservation, call the reservation line

during business hours at (408) 355-2201. The online reservation system is coming soon, and will be found at gooutsideandplay.org.

Uvas Canyon County Park is located at 8515 Croy Road, about 13 miles southwest of downtown Morgan Hill.

Teleconferencing common on board School Board, 1 Publishers Association, said while teleconferencing is permissible and not a violation of state open meetings laws, it can be seen as a way for trustees to “avoid public scrutiny” and proceedings “lose an element of our participatory democracy” when a participant is not physically present. “There’s a lot to be said for public officials being in a public place when doing the public’s business,” Moore said. Morgan Hill Board President Tom Arnett, whose full-time job requires regular travel, has remotely participated in seven meetings since June 2017, including four since being named chair of the board. Trustee David Gerard, who has not been present in months due to illness, has called in to nine consecutive meetings dating back to October 2017. “It’s not ideal, but kind of the reality I have to work within,” explained Arnett, who is an education researcher for the Clayton Christensen Institute, which has him traveling across the country to visit different school classrooms. “Before stepping up as board president, I had

Steve Delay, President “It’s less than ideal of the San Benito High that I can’t make it to all School District’s Board of the meetings due to work Trustees, said he has never commitments, but I think seen a trustee participate it would be unfortunate if via teleconference in his 12 people in my circumstance years on the board. couldn’t have a place on “It’s a commitment to the board,” Arnett said. be there unless somebody At Morgan Hill’s March 6 is really sick or something school board meeting, three (serious) comes up,” Delay of the seven trustees (Arnett, said. “We were elected to Gerard and Gino Borgioli)

participated in both closed and public session via teleconference. During the same meeting, the board reviewed the protocols for “telephonic participation” presented by attorney Manuel Martinez of the Lozano Smith law firm. “Questions surfaced from community members, staff and trustees about the legal and logistic parameters necessary for teleconferencing,” said Betando as to why the discussion item was placed on the agenda. “I felt that it was important to clarify what is necessary functionally and legally so that we can continue to do the business of the District with as many trustees participating as possible.” Martinez explained that as long as a quorum (majority of board) is located within the school district boundaries, either at the board room or another location, then there is no violation of the open meetings law. One condition pertaining to closed session, where discussions are kept confidential, is making sure the trustee is alone in a secure location. “I emphatically trust every single one of them,” said Borgioli of any inkling that a trustee would allow

someone to listen in to closed session proceedings. “I have complete confidence in my board.” Borgioli, who has never missed a meeting, has used teleconferencing twice since he was elected to the board in 2014. If any single trustee uses the teleconference option, all votes taken at that specific meeting must be done in a “roll call” format, which means each trustee must say their vote aloud so it can be properly recorded. Trustee Donna Ruebusch has used teleconferencing three times since joining the board in 2014, while

Trustees Teresa Murillo and Ron Woolf (the longest tenured member since 2010) have never utilized the teleconferencing option. “I am sure we all can agree that there is nothing that fully replaces being in the room when it comes to group participation and effective communication,” Betando said. “We will continue to welcome and attempt to give remote access for trustee full participation as active and engaged voting members, no matter where they are in the world and no matter why they are out during board meetings.”

Slow internet keeps big business out Telecom, 1 “Putting lines in the ground or on poles is very costly, and while we recognize that internet access is important, it still is a private sector business,” Lang said. “These businesses need to evaluate cost and profitability before they install lines. It costs about $1 million every mile to run lines, so they need to know that they will have the customers to make a return on the investment, and if they’re not going to make a profit, they won’t do it.” In a bit of irony, a seemingly outdated technology—landline telephones—are still some of the best ways to deliver better internet access. Traditionally, Morgan Hill has depended on existing telephone lines to provide internet access. Newer developments in town,

such as Paradise Valley and other hillside neighborhoods, started out underserved since telephone lines were not run to those areas when they were built. “Lots of things have changed,” Lang said. “For years, it was a given that neighborhoods required the infrastructure—copper is an essential element. As new neighborhoods sprung up, they weren’t set up with the telephone wires.” To address its internet problem, the city will explore a public/private partnership between Morgan Hill and internet providers. Additionally, later this year city staff will present a “Dig Once” policy to the city council. The city looks to a few examples of private/public efforts to improve internet speed: those of San

Leandro and Westminster, Maryland. In Westminster, the city partnered with Ting Internet, a company that boasts “crazy fast internet” with gigabit fiber that can provide up to 1,000 Mbps speeds. In their partnership, the City of Westminster financed the installation of fiber while Ting operates the service. In San Leandro, the city partnered with a nonprofit organization to use city-owned conduits to provide broadband internet to their business districts. Like San Leandro, Palo Alto and Silicon Valley Power have incorporated broadband services through the power utilities. In all cases, the internet capabilities in all three cities improved. The City of Morgan Hill introduced the possible “Dig Once” policy in

August 2016 as part of the city's 2016 General Plan Telecommunications Plan. Dig Once means that when the ground is broken for infrastructure, transportation or construction projects, the conduit for future use will be laid as well. “When we do work on our roads or on the sewer system, that would be an opportunity to put some conduit in the ground that can be later used to support our telecom development,” Lang said of the city’s Dig Once policy. “In the long run, it would save the city and the private sector a lot of money, and it helps to preserve our roadways since we wouldn't have to cut into the roads again,” Lang said. “It helps to achieve our long-term goals.” Like water, sewage service, and electricity, having

access to the internet is quickly becoming a basic human necessity. While Morgan Hill residents may bemoan slow service at home, poor internet access may cross Morgan Hill off the list for businesses. “If you’re running a hair salon or a manufacturing business, you probably won’t be too concerned about internet, but it does matter if you’re running a high-tech business,” Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce member Ken Murray said. “We’ve had several businesses rej ect Morgan Hill because of that, and that is a reason why this needs to be a strategic priority for the city.” Laying more fiber networks would help, but the future belongs to wireless, and given the high cost of running fiber lines,

Reserve your seat now at CineLuxTheatres.com

wireless technology would be much cheaper. For a business owner like Murray, providing fast internet is an essential piece to bring in high paying jobs to Morgan Hill. “Running fiber lines can cost millions of dollars, but you can put up a wireless tower from $20,000 to $25,000 and get a one-gigabyte network,” Murray said. Besides heavy-hitter telecom companies Frontier and Charter, other players in the Morgan Hill market are Etheric Networks, Wave Broadband, South Valley Internet and Bullet Wireless. Charter provides access through fiber and coaxial cable, and they provide internet and television. They also provide internet for business with their glass or copper products.

‘The Ghost’ opens new boxing gym Pound for Pound, 1 really pop, is the coaching. Aside from Ruben, who’s been training fighters for 40 years, coaches include former fighters Carol Siracusa and Pat Deleon. The Ghost, when he’s not working to train his 11-year-old son Robert Jr. or away at his job as a fight commentator for Fox Sports, is also a coach. “It’s so cool, having a world champion around pumps me up,” said Justin Cardona an amateur fighter. “I’ve always looked up to him. He’s my favorite fighter.”

In the meantime, there’s plenty to do, from pro-fighters to budding amateurs, youngsters, the elderly, and regular Joes who are looking to change their exercise routines— anyone can learn to box, for the mind, body and the soul. “We do something new every day, and I’m here for anyone who comes in the gym,” Ruben said. “In the morning we have kickboxing aerobics for adults. It’s great cardio for the heart, and it gets your blood pumping. It’s an hour of great training.”

As the fighters warmed up for an afternoon of sparring, Gilroyan Jim Balbas got in a morning workout. After a few minutes on the speed bag, sweat poured from Balbas’ body. “It’s awesome, and if you’re trying to get in shape, coming here is very motivating, and it’s a welcoming atmosphere,” Balbas said. “Where else can a guy come in from the street and have guys like this helping you out?” Ruben Guerrero has another purpose. He wants to continue to build

a boxing legacy out of the youth of Gilroy, just like he did with his kids, just like Robert. “We want to get people in shape and give kids someplace to go, instead of doing stuff on the streets that can get them in trouble,” Ruben said. “My goal is to build an Olympic team from the young kids here in Gilroy, just like my boys. We want to keep that legacy going. One day, we’ll have a gold medalist from Gilroy.” While the Guerrero’s want to train a new generation of champion

SISTERHOOD Sobrato High softball players Samantha and Lexi Parish have a relentless work ethic, often practicing twice a day to hone their skills. Lexi pitches, plays center field and Samantha is the Bulldogs catcher. The sisters have verbally committed to play at Santa Clara University.

when I’m down, she always brings me back up. She has a big heart, and always picks me back up. I enjoy having a sister like her.” “The thing I most admire about Sam is I feel like she makes me work harder because I want to be just like her in softball,” Lexi said. “I want to be as tough as her, and she inspires me to be a better person on the field. She puts so much hard work in, and I admire how much she loves the game. She makes me do better just by her being a loving person, even though she doesn’t like to show it as much to me.” Of course, like any close sisters, arguments are bound to happen. The two make sure if they’re ever not getting along at home or school, it doesn’t spill out to the softball field. “We have a lot of arguments as sisters—the basic stuff,” Lexi said. “Every little thing from clothes to who gets the shower first— that’s the big one. But once we step on the field, we put that aside.” Lexi takes a tumbling class once a week, which involves some serious athleticism, strength and agility. “I’ll do complicated tumbling passes, and I feel like it helps me get stronger,” she said. Lexi has the ability to hit the ball in the gaps, slap and bunt. She also possesses speed on the basepaths. In the circle, Lexi mixes speeds well and utilizes a curveball and

Lexi Parish is usually focused and having fun in the circle. But on this particular day, something was off. Her sister—who also happens to be her catcher, Samantha—saw this, called time and approached the circle. “I went up to her and asked straight-up, ‘Can you pitch?’” Samantha said. “She was shocked. She talked to me with an attitude. I told her if she wasn’t going to focus, I was going to get another pitcher to replace her right there and then. She was so sassy after that, and started pitching a lot better.” The Parish sisters— Samantha is a Sobrato High junior and Lexi a sophomore—are not afraid to get to the point with each other, and it works because neither player will take it as unwarranted criticism. In fact, the two thrive on tension in small doses, just the way it should be. “She can tell me what to do, what I need to correct and I’ll be fine,” said Lexi, who also is one of the team’s top hitters and

plays the field when she’s not pitching. “It’s great knowing I have someone I can trust behind the plate, not only to block all of my pitches (in the dirt), but to help me get strikes. Pitching to her helps us create a stronger bond.” It’s been a rewarding season for the Parish sisters, who were rarely on the same softball teams growing up because of their age difference. However, Lexi and Sam have been training and playing together since they started the sport at a young age. In the front yard of their parents’ Morgan Hill home, the Parishes have a batting cage decked out with all the bells and whistles of any top-notch facility. The sisters often have to be told to come inside before it gets too late, with late in this case meaning before midnight. “My sister and I pitch and hit there almost every night,” Lexi said. “I feel like softball never ends—it’s our life. We’ve put in the work to have the success of where we are today.” The Parish sisters have both made verbal commitments to play college softball at Santa Clara University, and they’re beyond thrilled they’ll be playing together at the next level. They love each other through their differences, admire the other with their similarities and their bond is seemingly inseparable. “What I admire about Lexi is on and off the field, she makes me laugh,” Samantha said. “Even

changeup to baffle opposing hitters. Samantha has been a stalwart behind the plate, possessing a rifle for an arm to deny wouldbe base stealers time and again. Samantha also communicates well with her pitchers and infielders when it comes to defensive coverage and is potent with the bat. Lexi and Samantha both play their travel ball for Central Coast Athletics, and their competitiveness rubs off on each other. Growing up, they challenged each other in just about everything—not just sports—and gotten have

stronger because of it. For Lexi, her most memorable moment playing sports with Samantha came in an extra inning game last season. In the bottom of the 12th inning, Lexi had a walkoff hit with two outs, which prompted Samantha to rush out of the dugout with jubilation. “I have video of my sister doing this little spin move before she ran up and carried me,” Lexi said. “It was so nice for her to show so much love for me at that moment.” The sisters credit their parents, Mia and Greg, for

pushing them just hard enough to get them out of their comfort zone, but not with such force that it would’ve soured them on the sport. Lexi and Samantha’s grandparents, Penny and Jerry, are the sisters’ most rabid fans. With such great support, Lexi and Samantha have plenty of reasons for wanting to do well. They joke with each other, rib each other and make sacrifices for each other. They’ve spent their entire lives together, not just in the house but outside on the softball field, building an unbreakable bond in the process.

Oakwood spring sports teams thrive HAWKS’ SWIMMING AND TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS ARE GOING STRONG, WITH STANDOUTS MAKING IMPRINT emanuel lee Sorts Editor

FRIDAY CROSSWORD

PRECOCIOUS Oakwood High sophomore Annie Rickard has goals to once again qualify to the Central Coast Section Meet in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

differences in others. “He’s definitely helped me to really see that so many people simply ignore people who need help because they can’t see past the differences,” she said. “But once you do, it’s a pleasure to get to know and help people.” Like most high level swimmers at the high school level, Rickard works out twice a day, the first starting at 5:30 a.m. and the second session in the afternoon after school. Rickard and her mom, Jackie, displayed dedication in helping to start Oakwood’s first-ever swim team last year. Jackie Rickard’s reasoning for becoming the program’s first-ever swim coach was simple. “I wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t for her love for swimming and the camaraderie that comes with it,” she said. “When kids show dedication, you can’t deny it.” Annie Rickard said it’s been great having Tompkins on the team. “It’s nice to have someone who can watch the other and give feedback or tell how your form looked,” she said. “Last year was fun, but it’s really helpful to have a friend go with you to these meets.” Since Oakwood doesn’t have a home pool, Rickard and Tompkins usually practice at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center. In addition to having goals to make the CCS Meet again, Rickard wants to place in the top 15 in her events this season and advance to the CIF State Meet by her senior season. It’s a lofty goal, but

What the Oakwood High swimming and track and field teams lack in facilities and numbers, they make up for with hard work and talent. One has to look no further than sophomore Annie Rickard, who is one of just two—yes, two—athletes that make up the swim team (freshman Brendon Tompkins is the other). A year ago, Rickard qualified for the Central Coast Section Meet in the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free. The track and field team is also small relative to most of the programs in the CCS, but that hasn’t deterred it from producing strong performances. The Hawks’ best performers thus far include Maryam Moghaddami, Hannah Selby, Kate Marcotullio and Jeb Goldman, who has come on particularly strong this season. The junior has established personal-records (PRs) in his three main events: the 800-meter run, 1600 and 3200. In those respective events, Goldman has times of 2:22.38, 4:57.77 and 11:20.61. Last year, Moghaddami advanced to the CCS Trials in the 100, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. The junior is close to nailing PRs in both hurdles events and has also done well in the long jump, hitting 15 feet in a Mission Trail League Cluster Meet

last Thursday. Hawks coach Karen Arnold expressed pride when talking about the team, noting Moghaddami’s ability and determination. “As the season progresses, she will be dropping her times,” Arnold said. “She is a very focused individual, knows what she wants and definitely works to get there in a positive way.” Selby has been remarkably consistent this season, high jumping either 4-6 or 4-8 in all seven meets. Arnold said Selby is finetuning her technique, which will lead to bigger jumps as the season goes on. “We only anticipate her getting higher from here,” Arnold said. “We’re small, but we feel mighty as a team.” Arnold also expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements off the track, pointing out that Selby leads a creative writing class and Moghaddami is actively involved at her mosque. Oakwood’s swim team members also excel academically and are wellrounded in the endeavors they pursue. Take Rickard, who is involved with five—count ‘em, five—clubs on campus. Rickard is the vice president of the school’s Interact Club, the projected president of the club for the next school year and started a new club on campus to help special-needs children. Her younger brother, Matthew, a seventh grader at Gilroy Prep, has Down’s syndrome. Rickard’s close relationship with her brother can be a life lesson for others to get beyond the surface level and embrace the

COMING ON STRONG Oakwood High junior Jeb Goldman has established personal-bests

in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter run events this season.

Rickard has shown she’s willing to put in the long hours to reach it. “Sometimes it’s hard

to stay determined when you keep on practicing but don’t see improvement,” she said. “But after

all these years, you realize if you stick with something long enough, you will get there.”

M

arcel Dubois, age 73, of Morgan Hill passed away peacefully on April 5, 2018, surrounded by his family. Born April 3, 1945 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Philibert and Marie Rose (Ferland) Dubois, Marcel grew up in Lewiston, Maine with his five siblings. He attended St. Dominic High School where he earned excellent grades, made life-long friends, and was named “Class Clown.” He loved to laugh! Marcel met the love of his life, Monique (Asselin), at age 15. After losing his dad at age 16, he and his siblings helped his mother run their corner market and the family’s Belmont Hotel in Lewiston, Maine. Marcel and Monique married on October 24, 1964. After attending Wentworth College and earning an Associate’s degree in Engineering, he proudly took a job at IBM. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Santa Clara University. In addition to a 35-year career with IBM, Marcel also worked for Anritsu and Hospira.

In 1970, Roxanne and Nicole in tow, Marcel and Monique relocated to California, where Marcel (Marc) was born. Marcel loved to socialize and organized many gatherings and annual events, including neighborhood block parties volleyball tournaments, and bicycle trips between wineries. Marcel loved to camp, play cards, start home improvement projects, coach soccer, and play tennis. He also loved to ski, sharing this talent with countless teens from St. Catherine’s Youth Group. An avid golfer, Marcel spent many days on the course and later taught Monique the love of the game. Marcel was a loyal fan of the New England Patriots, the Red Sox, and the Sharks and could be heard cheering loudly from far away! He was passionate about music and looked forward to happy hour on the porch with his neighbors while listening to the Oldies, Classic Rock, and of course, the Blues. Holidays were magical with Marcel; his excitement for parades and fireworks, and his visits as Santa were gifts to us all. Marcel and Monique loved to travel and visited Hawaii, France, England, Hong Kong, Thailand, Italy, and many U.S. landmarks. Above all, Marcel loved his childhood sweetheart, his best friend, his wife, the mother of his children, Monique, and all of his family. Marcel is survived by his wife of more than 53 years, Monique (Asselin) Dubois, three children Roxanne, Nicole, and Marcel, sons-in-law Doug Robinson and Scott Immel, daughter-in-law Lorraine (Townsend) Dubois, nine grandchildren: Melissa, Brooke, Rebecca, Matthew, Benjamin, Bradley, Timothy, Andrew, and Devin, and siblings Georges Henri, Sr. Monica, Denis, and Denise, as well as many nieces, nephews and their children. Marcel is preceded in death by his parents, Phillibert and Marie Rose (Ferland) Dubois, brother Norman, sisterin-law Rejeanne (Bernier) Dubois, sister-in-law Jeannine (Saucier) Dubois, father- and mother-in-law Normand and Rejane Asselin, nephew Michael Dubois, and dear friend Barbara Schrader. A memorial Mass will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at St. Catherine’s Church, Morgan Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dementia Society (www.dementiasociety.org) or Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org) in honor of Marcel’s infectious smile. “Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.” Now and Forever.
