STAR WARS ENTHUSIASTS Bicyclists from all over South Valley gathered at dusk in the first Morgan Hill Bike Party Friday, May 4.

Bikers party downtown ‘MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU’ CYCLING EVENT DRAWS CROWDS By Debra Eskinazi Magazine and Features Editor

More than 120 bicyclists donned Star Wars regalia, Friday, May 4 in the first Morgan Hill Bike Party. “It just so happened that it coincided with the fourth

of May,” said Bike Therapy owner Doug Hall about the typically Star Wars-themed celebrations. Hall, who along with his wife and co-owner at Morgan Hill’s Bike Therapy, Jodi, helped promote the event, worked with several groups including Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Group, Matthew Araujo at Specialized, and San Jose Bike Party to ensure its success. After a successful series of Friday night rides last summer coordinated

by Morgan Hill Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Group, Hall said their goal was to get more people riding—promoting the evenings as events for the whole family. “With everything happening for the Amgen Tour California (coming up May 16), the goal was to have a kickoff event,” Hall said. “My wife Jodi has been helping to plan the event.” The local ride was inspired by San Jose Bike Party. The group, whose

mission is “build community through cycling,” was formed in 2007. “A big part of the San Jose Bike Party is to promote safe cycling and lights,” Halls said. “With the help of San Jose Bike Party we brought a bunch of lights that we were giving out with a donation.” Hall said the event was well-received by residents. “It’s amazing, there was so much support from the community,” he said. “We’d be riding along and people

would be honking their horns. They were cheering for us. It was super fun. It was a really positive experience for cyclists and the community.” The event was also a precursor to Morgan Hill Bike Week (May 9-16), during which the city and other sponsors will host a series of community cycling events leading up to the prestigious Amgen Tour of California time trial May 16, which will start and end in downtown Morgan Hill.

Sales rise after move to Morgan Hill EFFICIENCY, AUTOMATION KEEP COSTS DOWN AT GOLDEN STATE ASSEMBLY Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

In what has become the go-to rags-to-riches Silicon Valley story, one of Morgan Hill's fastest growing companies started in a garage. From those

humble beginnings in San Jose, Golden State Assembly has grown to employ more than 500 people. The company this year expects to exceed $250 million in sales, and they plan to break ground on an expansion of their property on Butterfield Boulevard within months. Golden State Assembly Owners Cesar and Yesenia Madrueno are the protagonist of this rags-to-riches story. “There are two things

TOP-TIER DEGREES THAT FIT YOUR SCHEDULE AND LIFESTYLE.

I am firm on: lean manufacturing and automation,” Cesar Madrueno said. “With those things implemented efficiently, we can boost our efficiency from 90 to 95 percent. Even as expenses go up, we can manufacture products here and still sell them cheaper than in any other state.” Golden State Assembly specializes in the manufacturing and assembly of custom-made electrical components for

high-tech companies like Tesla Motors. Founded in March 2007, Golden State Assembly's garage operation got their first big order, $26,000 in electric cables for SNK Electronics, who remains one of their most steady customers. “I saw an opportunity to improve the process,” Madrueno said. “I spoke with my wife, and she said if you can do it better, why not start your own business.”

Expansion and relocation have been a constant theme in the history of Golden State Assembly. They have moved operations eight times and expanded three times, in each case to outgrow the space they were in. They now have over 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Fremont, Reno and Morgan Hill. Now, less than two years after coming to Morgan ➝ GSA, 8

District inches closer to education parcel tax BOARD TO MAKE IT OFFICIAL AT MAY 15 MEETING Scott Forstner Reporter

Morgan Hill Unified School District officials moved closer to finalizing a draft of a $75 education parcel tax, which is targeted for the November election, after the Board of Trustees reviewed the resolution May 1. The seven-member board is expected to vote on the final ballot measure resolution May 15 before it is submitted to the Santa Clara County Registrar's Office. After that submittal, a local Political Action Committee can begin campaigning for its approval by Morgan Hill voters. No action was taken by the board May 1, only a tweak to the wording of the resolution as trustees gave their input on what would be most effective in swaying voters to approve the property tax, which is estimated to generate $1.5 million annually over five years if it passes. The parcel tax draft outlines four key areas that the revenues will be used for. Those are: • Core academic programs that focus on skills like science, technology, engineering and math; • Ability to attract and retain quality teachers and staff; • Programs to help children with special needs; and • Programs focused on the arts. At the Feb. 6 meeting, the board of trustees did not move forward with a $75 parcel tax for the June election after learning the results of a second community survey. “The results of the polling indicated that not

enough support existed to pass a $75 (parcel tax) in June, and it was suggested to move the measure to the November ballot, where prior polling indicated a higher likelihood of passing,” according to the staff report. It also states that MHUSD “is the lowest funded unified school district” in the county and other districts “have locally-approved parcel taxes which generate additional funds to support important programs such as class size reduction, arts, libraries, and technology.” Morgan Hill schools are in the midst of trimming about $5.5 million from the district’s 2018-19 budget without any additional revenues coming in, and the parcel tax is aimed at negating any future cuts. Local political advocate Swanee Edwards has expressed interest in forming the PAC as soon as possible to begin fundraising to ensure the parcel tax’s passing on Nov. 6 ballot, according to district staff member Jim Carrillo, who is leading a group of people advocating for the parcel tax. The proposed parcel tax allows for exemptions to taxpayers who are at least 65 years old (on or before June 30), and it also includes an independent oversight committee to keep tabs on the district’s spending of the $1.5 million. As written in the resolution, the funds generated cannot go to administrator salaries or benefits. “I want to accept (the parcel tax resolution) as is,” said Trustee Donna Ruebusch, after listening in on some minor adjustments suggested by other board members. “I know from past

elections....that people are more willing to vote for something if they know it will not go to administrator salaries.” A parcel tax is a form of property tax assessed at a rate based on the characteristics of a “parcel,” rather than on the assessed value of the property, which is the standard method for levying property taxes, according to ballotpedia.org. It can be used for any type of spending, including construction costs, employee salaries and other projects or needs.

Principal Recognitions In other MHUSD business, Jackson Academy of Math & Music Principal Patrick Buchser was recognized by the Santa Clara County Office of Education as one of two recipients of the 2018 Artspiration Principal Arts Leadership Award, according to the district report. He will receive an “a-PAL Award” on May 22 at the Young Artist Showcase Celebration. “Buchser is known for his advocacy for the arts, his support of equitable arts access for all students, and his leadership in our district’s mission to implement a new Strategic Arts Plan,” the May 1 agenda reads. Los Paseos Elementary School Principal Debbie Stewart will be recognized May 11 at the Association of California School Administrators Awards dinner as a Region 8 ACSA 1st Year Administrator Superstar, according to district staff. “She has a passion for ensuring all students have access to a quality education and that teachers have the tools and support they need to help their students succeed,” the agenda item reads.

DIG IT Construction and earthmoving crews have been busy preparing the Sunsweet construction site in downtown Morgan Hill, pictured here May 7, for an 83-unit apartment complex with commercial space.

Sunsweet digs in for new apartments BUILDING BEGINS ON DEPOT STREET SITE Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

It took 25 years to get to this point, but work on the 83-unit Sunsweet Apartments on Depot Street is underway. The work continues the transformation of downtown Morgan Hill and the evolution of Depot Street. Republic Housing of San Jose and property owners

Rocke and Glenda Garcia of Glenrock Development are working together to develop on the approximately two acres of land. Rocke Garcia expects the four-story market-rate apartment complex to be completed within 14 to 15 months. Like the rest of downtown Morgan Hill, Depot Street continues to evolve. Recently completed projects include The Granary retail district and the condominiums at The Barley Place— both developed by Weston Miles Architects—as well as the city’s new Railroad Park.

Established, popular restaurants like Odeum and Jonty's Vietnamese Eatery keep the neighborhood balanced with commercial options. The Sunsweet project is bordered by East Third Street on the north, Depot Street to the east and East Fourth Street to the south, next to Orange Theory Fitness and the downtown parking garage on Fourth Street. Apartment sizes will range from 600 to 1,500 square feet, studio apartments to three-bedroom apartments. The

commercial area, which will face Third Street, will feature a restaurant space and a leasing office. Sunsweet will have an underground parking garage with two spaces allowed for each unit except studio apartments, which will be allowed one space each. “It’s an ideal location for transit access, and it’s in the downtown,” Garcia said. “It’s what the city, and ourselves, have tried to achieve for the past 25 years. It’s taken a long time, but the city is good to work with when you have

a project that is beneficial to the whole city.” City staff hopes that the 83 units at Sunsweet will fill in the need for market-rate apartments in Morgan Hill. As the market for single-family home construction continues to grow, the availability of market-rate apartments has lagged behind. “Our market rate to rent apartments supply is less than 1 percent, meaning we don’t have enough for our workforce,” Morgan Hill Community Development Director Edith

Ramirez said. “This would complement our supply of market-rate housing, helping to provide housing for our young and creative minds.” While Sunsweet has yet to calculate how much rent will cost, the average rent in Morgan Hill remains among the highest in the county. The website rentcafe.com lists the average monthly rent for all units in Morgan Hill at $2,426. Amenities at Sunsweet include a swimming pool and a dog wash for pet owners.

Mosque project too big for San Martin

T

he Morgan Hill Times article dated April 26, 2018 (“Moque project to face public review by summer”) is one-sided. The quote from the mother of the bullied student, who admits that the problem had been resolved a year ago, just instilled more negativity and caused dystopia. Throughout history there is documented ill will. Concerning the Cordoba project (Mosque) in San Martin, not all who make threatening comments are from the “Muslims Go Home” side. I too have felt threatened by comments voiced to me. Was it because I am from San Martin? Was I singled out because I am a woman? Regardless, it was unacceptable, and caused angst. But I am tired of the fear mongering and accusations against the residents of San Martin, from people who don't have a clear understanding about this unincorporated village. People are so quick to judge, cast the first stone and accuse others of being anti-Muslim or xenophobic. However, there were no cries of racism, or anti-Baptist slurs when the county denied the application (for the same parcel) years prior to the Cordoba project application. The county denied it based on zoning. The county has since updated its zoning code, and there are many facts to be considered from all sides of the spectrum. The comment that "County planners have told the residents that the county cannot legally reject a project based on the religion of those who proposed it" is very condescending and offensive. San Martin residents are not ignorant, and have stood firm on the fact that “Size Matters” in San Martin. The following are just a few serious concerns related to the Cordoba project: 1. This project defies the Santa Clara County San Martin Integrated Design Plan (SMIDP); 2. It is in very close proximity to Llagas Creek;

Michael Moore Editor mmoore@morganhilltimes.com

Scott Forstner

3. There have been years of poor percolation testing, and the parcel floods southwest to Harding Avenue; 4. The existing curve of Monterey Road, may necessitate the need for turning lanes and possible traffic signals; 5. San Martin does not have the community resources that a city has—most residents are entirely dependent upon private wells for potable water (drinking and bathing), and according to the World Health Organization guidelines, entirely too close for a proposed cemetery; 6. There would be excessive lighting at night, which would affect wildlife. There was a reason the county established the SMIDP for San Martin. Yet our voices to protect this unique rural community have fallen on deaf ears. Thanks to San Martin Neighborhood Alliance, there is finally dialogue with the county and San Martin has gained some respect. A South County traffic study is just underway, but will take a couple years to complete, so it is unknown how traffic will be impacted with a development of this magnitude. The article quotes plans "designed to accommodate up to'300 people at a time,” but claims there are presently 400 members of the South Valley Islamic Community who proposed the Cordoba project. In 200607, I had a discussion with county planning about the Cordoba Center application. I was told the application on file was for a 25,000-square-foot development, and it was denied because of the size. I believe Size Matters in San Martin. Illustrations of the proposed Cordoba project, although lovely, show a facility that is much larger than any existing religious institutions in San Martin.

Honesty. Integrity. Transparency. None of these words appeared in this newspaper’s May 3 editorial. In their place, Laurie Smith is referenced fourteen times. No other phrase appears more often, not even close. Nowhere in the editorial did this newspaper mention John Hirokawa’s nearly four decades of distinguished law enforcement experience serving and protecting the people of South County. No mention was made of Hirokawa's universal support from law enforcement groups, including the Deputy Sheriff ’s Association of Santa Clara County, the Peace Officers Research Association of California, Gilroy Police Officers’ Association, and over 80 career law enforcement individuals and organizations. That should tell you everything you need to know when this newspaper mentions John Hirokawa’s readiness. This newspaper just can’t see the safety of South County residents for all it’s Laurie Smith’s. Fortunately, South County voters read past this propaganda. In the 2014 election, I was honored to receive the support of a majority of South County voters despite similar efforts to distort the truth. The truth is that Smith has fought reforms every step of the way. As of April 2018, she paid an out-of-state consultant nearly $75,000 of taxpayer funds for a biased report that undermined independent oversight of the county jails. I ask South County to join the chorus of law enforcement and community members supporting John Hirokawa for a safer Santa Clara County. This group includes myself, retired Sheriff Bob Winter, and retired Judge Ladoris Cordell. Cordell advocated for a change in leadership alongside the Blue Ribbon Commission in response to the 2015 murder of a mentally disabled inmate. Vote for John Hirokawa for Sheriff to restore honesty, integrity, and transparency to our county’s top law enforcement job.

Hard work pays off Cesar and Yesenia met almost 20 years ago while Cesar—a native of Jalisco, Mexico—was studying English in the Bay Area. The couple, who have a 5-year-old son, recently moved to the outskirts of Gilroy near Christopher High School. They enjoy the peace and natural beauty of their new home. “I wanted to know what it felt like to make as much money as a doctor,” said Madrueno, who at one point worked seven different jobs. “I knew that would be tough. I worked at several restaurants during the day, a manufacturing company, and technology company at nights. At one point I was working 24 hours a day. I did that for 10 years.” Aside from his drive to succeed, Madrueno worked with his family in mind, and he used

this ultimate dream for motivation. “It wasn’t about the money; it was about family, and I wanted to give my child an opportunity to go to school and learn what they want,” Madrueno said. “It was hard though, and I wasn’t sure I was going to make it to 50-yearsold. But it’s all about family, and that’s what I tell my employees.” Madrueno believes that in the end, it’s the customer that pays most for inefficiency from higher costs to later delivery times. By incorporating automation, GSA can manufacture parts in house, for onethird of what they were paying from a supplier and they can guarantee the quality of the work. “Efficiency applies everywhere; it’s a domino effect,” Madrueno said. “If the front office doesn’t do its job, that will affect manufacturing, which will impact delivery.” In Morgan Hill, Golden State Assembly has about 50 employees, including engineers, accountants and human resources and manufacturing. Manufacturing workers, who start earning $13 an hour, make up 40 percent of the workforce. “When you use automation, that does not mean you’re going to get rid of jobs. People and robots can work side by side,” Madrueno said.

As of today, GSA has approximately $65 million in sales, and they expect to top $250 million by the end of the year. “The economic indicators are good, but we can’t let ourselves be distracted, we need to focus on the basics,” Madrueno said. “We need to continue to diversify and improve.”

GSA 1 Hill, Madrueno bought the parcel of land next to his facility at 18220 Butterfield Boulevard for $1.6 million and plans to build enough space for 60 more employees. “I was told there would be about $1 million in fees when we get started,” Madrueno said. “I was like, whoa, I did not know that.” For Bay Area business owners like Madrueno, the cost of doing business is hard to manage, even as the economy continues to grow. He is challenged by high taxes, building costs, labor costs—along with everything else that drives some to abandon the area for other, cheaper, parts of the world. For GSA, the ability to expand rests on efficiency, diversification and the proximity to their clients. “I think the biggest problem in California, aside from taxes, is that it’s very expensive, and we need to pay our people enough and still sell our product cheaply,” Madrueno said. “That is part of our philosophy. Whether the economy goes up or down, we want to pay our people more every year, and we want to be 20 to 30 percent above our competitors. We do that through efficiency.” Madrueno considered a 150,000 to 250,000-square-foot facility in the Central Valley. But in Morgan Hill, he found the right combination of what he needed when he explored his last expansion. “I passed Morgan Hill and Gilroy all the time on my way to Los Angeles, and I didn’t realize how close they were to San Jose,” Madrueno said. “It’s more expensive here than the Central Valley, but we can serve our clients better here. Our clients can get here in a few moments rather than take half a day to get to the Central Valley.” Golden State Assembly does not have a sales

Teen goes high altitude for prom date Ann Sobrato High School junior Austin Gonzales, 16, found a daring and creative way to ask his girlfriend to this year’s Junior Prom. Gonzales, who has been taking pilot lessons out of San Martin Airport for about two years, brought his girlfriend, junior Aiden Lachance, on an April 22 flight lesson. Little did she know, earlier that same day, Gonzales and his parents used 100 traffic cones to spell out “Prom?” on the Sobrato football field. Along with his instructor, Gonzales flew Lachance over Santa Cruz and Anderson Dam before reaching Sobrato HS in north Morgan Hill at about 2pm, at which time he told her to look down and see the message he left for her. Lachance said, “Yes.” The two will be going together to the Junior Prom, which is being held May 19 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Sobrato high schools, to build confidence, feed independence and further life skills. A major objective is to build a relationship with local businesses and organizations through the student’s on-site volunteerism with the hope of acquiring a parttime job. He has worked out partnerships with Rosy’s at the Beach, We Dog Care, GVA Cafe, Goodwill and the City of Morgan Hill. The students get compensated for their hours (up to 10 per month) through the Workability 1 program, which is funded by the State Department of Rehabilitation. They receive a salary of $10.50 per hour for their work. The post-secondary program does not get any additional funding from the school district and uses their paychecks to fund other class activities and excursions. “It’s all about just focusing on the kids and helping them out,” Barbettini said.

Special to the Times

A third annual Cinco de Mayo fiesta of sorts for Morgan Hill and Gilroy students with special needs was hosted by teachers from both programs May 4 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. The celebratory event was a bit of a send-off for teacher Justin Barbettini, who is in his second and final year heading up the post-secondary program for adult students with special needs for Morgan Hill Unified School District. He was joined by teacher Mike Luke, who runs the moderate to severe disability program at Gilroy High School. “They have a great group of kids down there in Gilroy,”

said Barbettini, who started his special education career as a paraprofessional/aide in Luke’s classroom. “At that time, I knew I wanted to be a teacher but the kids in that class are the reason I got into special education.” This year, 20 students (nine from Morgan Hill and 11 from Gilroy) gathered for a fun-filled day with some Cinco de Mayo flair, including Mexican trinkets Barbettini bought from La Placita gift shop in Gilroy, BBQ-d carne asada tacos and other holiday fixins. Activities included music, piñatas and a water balloon fight. “It’s the kids that I really have memories with and connections with,” said Barbettini, who is moving to Maine and plans to continue his work in post-secondary special education. “My class has been great. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve made a lot of things happen.” Barbettini works with his students, who range in ages from 18-22 and are transferred in from Live Oak and

Flores, a Lake Elsinore resident, has also been recognized by CHP as a hero. Flores will also receive a Medal of Distinction at a separate ceremony closer to his home, Parker said. “I knew they were unconscious, and they were not going to get out on their own,” Perez said. “The last thing in the world I wanted to see was those two people burn.” One of two occupants

of the Mercedes died in the collision, according to Perez and the CHP. Perez grew up in the Salinas area and has lived in Morgan Hill with his family for about 18 months. His sons attend high school in Gilroy. The son of migrant workers, Perez flies corporate jets for a living. He told the media that his parents instilled “hard work and helping others” into his and his six brothers’ upbringing. “I was hoping I could help somebody out,” Perez said quietly and humbly of why he decided to help the 2017 accident victims.

Perez’ wife, Marie, said she is proud of her husband for the actions he took. “I’m extremely thankful that he’s OK and he was able to save those two people from that truck,” Marie Perez said. “It’s so unfortunate that there was a fatality at the scene, but it could have been worse.” The CHP certificate awarded to Perez April 23 also describes the accident. The description notes it was a three-car collision. The third vehicle was a 2012 Scion. “Absent your selfless actions, the occupants trapped inside of the burning Ford would not

have survived,” reads the certificate. “You are commended for your heroic actions, which saved the lives of two motorists.” Parker said the couple saved by Perez and Flores are “doing well.” Parker added that in his 20-year career with the CHP, he has never seen anyone receive the CHP’s Medal of Distinction. In addition to the CHP recognition, Alexander Pittaro of Sen. Bill Monning’s office and Pricilla Orona of Assemblymember Anna Caballero’s office presented Perez with certificates of commendation.

Morgan Hill resident Jose Perez was simply hoping he could “help somebody out” when he stopped on the side of a busy highway in January 2017 to check on the victims of a fiery traffic accident that happened right before his eyes. His actions saved two Los Banos residents from burning to death as he and another passing motorist pulled them to safety with flames beginning to engulf the victims’ vehicle, according to police. At a ceremony April 23 at the California Highway Patrol office in Gilroy, Perez was officially hailed a hero by police and South County’s elected state legislature officials. Perez attended the April 23 ceremony with his wife, Marie, and two teenage sons, Javen and Silas. CHP Commdr. Scott Parker presented Perez with the CHP’s Medal of Distinction—a rare honor—for his heroic efforts. Perez described what happened, and what he was thinking when he witnessed the head-on collision during a rainy afternoon Jan. 21, 2017. He was traveling eastbound on State Route 152, just east of San Felipe Road in east

Gilroy, when a Ford F150 pickup traveling in front of him “just exploded.” The pickup collided head-on with a Mercedes that was traveling westbound on State Route 152, Perez said. The pickup veered to the right shoulder, hit a guardrail and came to a stop just off the roadway. The Mercedes went abruptly to the other side of the road before coming to a stop. “My first thought, I figured there were major injuries, and somebody was hurt,” Perez told media assembled at the April 23 ceremony. “I was able to weave through the debris and not hit anything. I came to a stop and dialed 911.” Perez, who was traveling alone, exited his vehicle and approached the accident scene, “to see if there was anything I could do.” “As I was running toward (the truck), I saw an orange flame coming out of the engine compartment, so I knew it was going to catch on fire eventually,” he continued. “I went to the (passenger’s) side, and couldn’t get that door open. I went to the driver’s side and that’s when the engine compartment just exploded in flames.” With the help of the other passing motorist, Vidal Flores, he was able to remove the two unconscious occupants of the Ford—a man and a woman—out of the

Five benefits of youth summer camps YMCA HAS EXTENSIVE LIST OF KIDS’ ACTIVITIES Staff report

Parents, are you nervous about how your children and teens will spend their time in an active, productive and challenging way when school gets out this summer? If so, the YMCA of Silicon Valley’s Summer Day Camps

might assuage your concerns. Camps are available at YMCA facilities throughout Santa Clara County, including in Morgan Hill. Children can register for “traditional day camps,” which offer a variety of fitness, arts, life skills and educational (yet fun) activities for youth, according to the YMCA’s website at ymcasv.org. In addition to the traditional day camps, the youth organization also offers arts camps, specialty

camps, sports camps, STEM camps, teen day camps and overnight camps. The YMCA even offers a “High Five Camp” for children who are too young for other options. More information about all of the YMCA’s summer youth camp and activity offerings is available on the organization’s website. Summer is a crucial time for children to remain active and continue learning when school and seasonal sports are not in session, according to YMCA staff. Spending the time indoors glued to technology can waste valuable developmental time for children. Kids and teens

left at home throughout the summer can become bored and disengaged. “Connecting with friends and staying physically active are the backbone of an amazing summer,” YMCA of Silicon Valley spokeswoman Rachel Basso said in a press release. “Engaging and interactive programs allow kids and teens the opportunity to embrace the exciting potential of the summer months. Campers discover a passion for learning that leaves them confidently seeking new experiences and striving for success.” YMCA’s day camps and overnight camps help ensure children’s summer is “filled with adventure,

friendship and discovery,” the press release states. The YMCA offers five clear benefits of summer camp: • Adventure: cooking, singing, dancing, solving, creating, running, playing and more; • Healthy fun: Summer camps set the foundation for a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of nutrition and staying active; • Personal growth: developing skills, making friends and exploring the unknown helps kids build confidence, establish independence and find a lifelong love of learning; • Friendship: Campers can make new friends

and strengthen existing relationships. The confidence built at summer camp helps youth flourish throughout the year; • Memories: Summer camp offers an unforgettable experience, as campers return to school with a renewed spirit and stories of summertime adventures. There are more than 300 varieties of affordable day camps and other summer programs offered by the YMCA of Silicon Valley. Financial assistance and reduced member pricing is available to ensure all youth have access to these programs, reads the press release.

TAKING IT Acorns freshman Karlie Lema, seen here at practice earlier in the season, won the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles and long jump in last week’s BVAL West Division Finals at Independence High. Lema looks to win all three events in Thursday’s BVAL Championships.

and 3200 and was a member of the victorious 4x400-relay team along with Tessa Seda, Sarah Jacob and Gillian McCaw, who posted a time of 4 minutes, 17.74 seconds. One would be hardpressed to find anyone in the meet who ran more than Reed last Thursday. “I was pretty tired, and it was tough,” Reed said. “Right after the 2-mile run, I had to do the 4x400. I think my split time was 65 seconds. When things get painful, I just know I have to keep going. I count down the laps and stay focused on that.” Reed had a dominating run in the 800, clocking 2:24.61 to beat the runner-up by nine seconds. Although her time of 5:34.41 in the mile run and 12:02.82 in the 2-mile run weren’t personal-records (PRs), she feels her desired times will come. In Thursday’s BVALs, Reed will try to replicate or better her performance at the CCS Top 8 Classic on Aprill 21, when she hit a pair of PRs in going 5:18.63 in the 1600 and 11:40.18 in the 3200.

Top moment

“That was my season highlight,” she said. “I was out there with so many fast girls, and it was great competition It was tough (at West Valley Division Finals) because Kaylah was way ahead of me and the people behind me were pretty far back, so I was running by myself.” Reed won’t be running by herself at BVALs, as the competition involves the league’s best runners. Acorns sophomore Brandon Miner had a strong meet, winning the 110 hurdles in 16.56 and the 300 hurdles in 43.59 and finishing second in

Kolton McCrossen never thought he would run shorter distances in competition. After all, the Live Oak High sophomore grew up excelling in the mile, enjoying a stellar middle school career running at Martin Murphy. However, McCrossen decided to make the switch to the shorter track events after pushing hard in the distance events and not seeing the results. It’s apparent McCrossen has made the crossover to the shorter track races well, as he won the 200- and 400-meter runs in 23.16 and 46.13 seconds, respectively, while also being a part of Live Oak’s 4x100 relay team that finished second. McCrossen had the fastest times entering the West Valley Division Finals, so it was a matter of him running his race and staying focused. “I’m pretty happy with my times,” he said. “My hamstring was not feeling good throughout the day, but I was able to qualify and move on. I’m confident heading into BVALs (on Thursday).” The BVAL Championships, which will be held at Westmont High, combine the qualifiers from all three divisions. McCrossen was running the 4x100 relay for just the second time this

season at the varsity level. In fact, McCrossen has competed in as many frosh-soph races as varsity this season. In addition to qualifying for the Central Coast Section Trials, McCrossen plans on breaking the school’s frosh-soph record in the 200 and 400. “If BVALs is going to be my last meet, I want to leave everything out there,” he said. “The key is to get out of the blocks well for the 200, and in the 400 I have to be more aware.” McCrossen ran the first leg for the 4x100 relay team, and on the exchange the Acorns barley avoided disaster as McCrossen and Greg Sperry—the second runner—nearly bumped into each other and missed the exchange out of the zone. “It was chaos,” McCrossen said. “I’m going to have to work on the exchange.” McCrossen is encouraged by the times he’s been posting, making his decision to try to the 200 and 400 early in the season a prescient one. “I was training hard non-stop and wasn’t getting faster,” he said. “My body just wasn’t doing it, so I decided to try something else. I’m glad I did.” In addition to McCrossen, Audrey Reed, Brandon Miner, Kaylah Grant, Karlie Lema and Brenden White also won events. Lema and Reed are freshman sensations and best friends, having also played together as starters on the soccer team. Reed also had a standout cross country season last fall. Reed was quite fatigued after the completion of the Finals, and for good reason. Reed won the 800, took second in the 1600

the high jump in 5-8. Miner has made steady progression in all of his events throughout the season, and he’s seemingly primed for more PRs at BVALs. “I’ve hit a PR in almost every single meet,” he said. “I feel my technique in the hurdles is really good, and now I just have to work on being consistent. I’m getting consistent getting over each hurdle and understanding the form that goes into it because I’ve been doing it since the sixth grade.” Miner only started competing in the 300 hurdles this season

because he was feeling a bit down during the team’s season-opening scrimmage. “I did really bad in the 110 race and decided to cheer myself up, so I did the 300 for fun,” he said. “I ended up doing good, and my times have kept dropping.” As expected, Grant and Lema were victorious in their events, with Grant winning the 1600 and 3200 and Lema winning the 100, long jump and 100 hurdles. White dominated the field events, winning the discus throw with a mark of 136 feet and the shot put in 44-10.

Gavilan’s coach, athletes pull double KEVIN KRAMER AND TWO ATHLETES PLAY ON SOFTBALL, BEACH VOLLEYBALL TEAMS IN THE SAME SPORTS SEASON emanuel lee Sports Editor

Taking the challenge

Kramer deserves a lot of credit, as he took the position having never coached softball before. But he surrounded himself with experienced and knowledgeable softball coaches, and pretty much left the Xs and Os stuff to them. Kramer, meanwhile, took care of the overall management of the program—paperwork, travel arrangements, facility maintenance and all of the little things that need to be taken care of behind the scenes—making for a nice combination. “When we decided to make this happen, I told the AD (Athletic Director Ron Hannon) the only way we were going to get it done is if we found some really good softball assistant coaches. We did, and they were awesome.” Kramer was referring to softball assistant coaches Paige Miguel, Bobby Reggiani and Mari Rodriguez. Kramer also credited his assistant coaches on the beach volleyball team—Chris Spence, Ramon Rodriguez and Isaiah Acfalle— for being instrumental to the program’s success. With the help of his assistant coaches, Kramer

was able to juggle coaching two teams in the same season, almost unheard of at any level, especially in community college. But extenuating circumstances—the possibility of the softball program folding—required extraordinary measures. Simply put, Kramer did not want any of the student-athletes who came to Gavilan to play softball have something taken away through no fault of their own. “The biggest motivation in doing this was knowing the ladies on campus who came to Gavilan to play softball,” he said. “For us to not give them an opportunity would be heartbreaking. Softball is amazing in our area, and Gavilan once again needs to be a destination for the players who want to go the JC route. And I see no reason why it can’t be done. That was the motivation for me to come back.” Kramer did something few others in his position would’ve done three weeks ago—turn down a position to be an athletic director. But that’s exactly what happened when Kramer was offered the Mission College athletic director position. Kramer has always said he loves being immersed at Gavilan College, and he has gone above and beyond in showing it. Kramer said he loves the atmosphere at Gavilan and helping the studentathletes achieve their goals. Go to morganhilltimes. com to view the full version of this story.

It was double duty for two Gavilan college athletes and one coach during the spring sports season. Kevin Kramer coached the Rams softball team and beach volleyball squad, and Lexi Chavarria and Kaitlyn Siaz played both sports. Safe to say, the last couple of months have been extremely busy for the trio. “It’s been hard on my body, but I feel like I’m handling it pretty well,” said Chavarria, a 2016 San Benito High graduate. “I definitely wouldn’t have succeeded if it wasn’t for Kevin because he really works with me and is flexible with the times I can come to practice. He also understands if I’m feeling sore one day, it’s OK to take a day off. Otherwise, my body probably wouldn’t have been able to get through an entire season.” It was a successful season for Gavilan’s beach volleyball and softball teams for a variety of reasons. The beach volleyball team recently concluded its season, but the two-woman tournament is ongoing. The Rams’ No. 1 team of Mikeila Banda and Haley Leifheit (San Benito) and No. 3 squad of Katia Dizon (Anzar) and Emily Jensen (formerly Kortsen, a former San Benito standout) advanced to the California Community College State

Tournament on Friday. The softball team recorded only five wins, but the most important victory was Gavilan fielding a team at all after the program was in danger of folding in the off-season after it couldn’t get a coach for several months following the 2017 season. Kramer, fellow coaches and the Gavilan athletics administration refused to let that happen.
