KEVIN COLE CONVICTED IN DECEMBER 2017 SOBRATO INCIDENT Michael Moore Editor
Kevin Cole, a drama production technician who
has worked with youth performers in Morgan Hill for several years, was convicted earlier this month of annoying or molesting a child in relation to an incident during a December 2017 dance recital at Sobrato High School. Cole, 36, of Newark, faced multiple female
accusers during the trial in a San Jose courtroom. Three of these teens’ families are also aiming to hold the Morgan Hill Unified School District accountable for failing to notify police about a previous complaint that Cole, who has worked as a contractor and employee of the local district since 2014,
inappropriately touched a female student, according to the accusers’ attorney. Furthermore, two of Cole’s teen accusers plan to blame the private dance company whose tutelage they were under when Cole allegedly touched or spoke to them inappropriately, for “negligence and/or negligent hiring, training
(and) supervision,” said the girls’ attorney, Lauren Cerri of the San Jose based Corsiglia, McMahon and Allard law firm. During the jury trial for Cole’s criminal charges, six teenage girls testified “to inappropriate language and touching by ➝ Cole, 12
MHUSD BOARD, CHARTERS FAIL TO AGREE ON MEASURE Scott Forstner Reporter
With three school board members second-guessing their prior decision in May to include two charter schools in a parcel tax resolution, Morgan Hill Unified School District’s governing body pulled a complete 180 and withdrew the proposal at a June 19 meeting. Trustees Mary Patterson, Teresa Murillo and Tom Arnett changed their minds about placing the parcel tax on the Nov. 6 ballot and shifted the board majority from a 5-2 vote in favor at a previous meeting to a 5-1 vote against moving forward with the resolution. “I believe what has happened is I have failed and we as a board have failed on two accounts,” Patterson said. “Number one, we failed when we launched the parcel tax and we didn’t instruct staff Robert Eliason

COOL DOWN Kids headed to the Community & Cultural Center to beat the heat at Downtown Splash Friday, June 22. Local youngsters Zac and Scott chill out on the splash pad.
Summer splashes in Temperatures nearing the triple digits on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23, prompted many residents to cool down at Downtown Splash, an outdoor spray pad at the Community and Cultural Center. The free feature, located at 17000 Monterey Road, offers the public a fun reprieve from the heat. Maureen Tobin, the city’s communications and engagement manager, said the city is thrilled to have the water feature, which reopened last year, up and running again. “We are just delighted to be able to have that for
the community,” Tobin said. “It’s really the only free water feature available to the community, and it attracts a lot of families and children to the area to have a picnic lunch there. And it serves parts of our community that might not be able to afford to go to the aquatic center.” Downtown Splash runs daily through Aug. 19 at Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, noon-4pm, Fridays, 10am-2pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, noon-4pm. The splash pad stays open weekends from Aug. 20-Sept. 23, noon-4pm. Compost operation consumes waste SOUTH VALLEY ORGANICS EXPANDS NEAR GILROY Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
When it comes to garbage, recyclables or yard waste, once the bins hit the curb, that’s it. Goodbye to bad rubbish. There's life after trash, however. Plastic can turn into anything from winter coats to playground equipment. Recycled aluminum may become cars, bikes, or airplane parts. The possibilities can be staggering. The same is true for your yard clippings and food waste,
and Recology, through its company South Valley Organics, turns the toil of your yard work into new, resellable compost. This composting operation takes place outside of Gilroy about a quarter-mile off Pacheco Pass Highway. On nearly every weekday of the year, trucks haul in 150 tons of organics to South Valley Organics’ 16-acre site. After the trucks pass over scales that weigh the organics, the material is dumped into piles, which then go through mechanical grinders. The groundup material is then made into windrows, mounds about 7 feet high and 100
feet long. There, in the windrows, microscopic gourmets devour the harmful bacteria. Scientifically, these gourmets are microorganisms that include bacteria and fungi which, through a natural process, break down the material with the help of oxygen and water. In a way, the organisms are cooking the compost, and the natural heat, which reaches 130 degrees F, can be seen through escaping gasses or felt by the touch. Next to South Valley Organic’s composting center lies the remains of the old landfill, which contains generations of trash from Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
The landfill was closed in 2008 and is now covered with grass. Methane exhaust pipes that burn away gas that continues to emanate from the remaining refuse dot the landscape. Each tube is fitting with burners that continuously burn away harmful gasses. The state mandated a 30-year post-closure monitoring plan to watch over the former landfill. The material comes from Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Pacifica, Cupertino, Mountain View, San Bruno and soon, Hollister. There are 10 employees at South Valley Organics, who work from 7am to 3:30pm. Before the compost is ready to be sold, South
Valley Organics sends samples to a Watsonville laboratory where the lab tests the compost for metals and contaminants. South Valley Organics sells its compost wholesale. One of its most significant clients is Lyngso, which then sells the compost to big-box garden stores. The compost is sold by the cubic yard at market price. South Valley Organics would not disclose how much per pound they charge for their compost. The compost is turned over with loaders to keep the compost moist. The longer the piles sit, the hotter they get, which is vital to the composting process.
South Valley Organics sprays the compost with water collected in a 4 million-gallon pond downhill from the compost yard. The water is funneled down through pipes and pumped back up for storage in five 10,000-gallon tanks. While the nose of the beholder determines the smell, the compost yard at South Valley Organics smells faintly like pine and lawn clippings. The site is also popular with wildlife, particularly crows that poke around the compost searching for seeds. Mountain lions, wild pigs, coyotes and deer visit the site on a regular basis.

Having just breezed unopposed into his third and final four-year term, District 1 Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman believes he’s just now hit his publicservice stride. Los Gatos resident Wasserman, 60, represents the communities of San Jose, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. “I’m driven and compassionate,” said Wasserman, who, like other supervisors, is limited to three terms. “I have a head for numbers and a heart for the people.” Wasserman began his journey into public service as a teenager when he volunteered at Agnews State Hospital. After he earned a degree in psychology from University of Southern California, he married his college sweetheart, Kim, and dedicated his energy to his family. “You don’t have a lot of time for other things,” said Wasserman, who became a certified financial planner and ran a
small business over the next few years. That’s not to say that he was laying around the couch in his spare time. Before holding public office, Wasserman spent more than 10 years volunteering as a sports coach for 300 kids on 25 youth teams. In recognition of all his community involvement, he was voted “Best Sports Coach,” Best Volunteer” and “Best Civic Minded Citizen.” Around the time that his kids had grown and left the nest, Wasserman used the Kiwanis Club to expand his personal network. He was first elected to the Los Gatos Town Council in 2002 and served until 2010, part of that time as mayor. While on the council, Wasserman championed the Youth Sports Park, helped bring the Los Gatos Library up to strict environmental standards and aggressively maintained a balanced budget. Running for supervisor in his district in 2010 seemed like a natural sequence of events, and Wasserman was able to throw all of his energy into building countywide relationships. “We have a great relationship built over many years of working on tough issues together,” said Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco, who met Wasserman eight years ago. “He is more than just generous with his
time; Mike is generous with his heart.” Velasco served on Wasserman’s staff until this spring. Wasserman said he plans to continue working on reducing Gilroy’s homeless population when his final term begins this January. “It’s the right thing to do,” said Wasserman, adding that funding comes from Measure A, which generates $950 million from bond sales. “Not only is it the right thing, it directly saves the taxpayers money.” Wasserman also directed county funding to the Morgan Hill Playground Project to build the first all-inclusive playground that’s universally accessible in Morgan Hill. Once complete, the playground will allow children and adults of all physical and emotional abilities to play together. The supervisor’s work is greatly appreciated. “Mike is very responsive and communicates well,” said Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate. “His varied interests and ever-present enthusiasm make him a delight to work with.” Wassermann finds peace by teaching his French bulldogs Cocoa, Max and Peaches agility training. “This teaches me patience,” he said. “You work and prepare, then something unforeseen happens and you have to adjust. It’s a great distraction.”
Suspect shoots vehicle outside MH apartment NO INJURIES REPORTED Staff report
Morgan Hill Police are investigating a shooting outside an apartment complex that occurred the evening of June 19. About 9:15pm, three people were working on a vehicle parked in the northeast corner of the rear parking lot of the complex at the corner of Spring and Barnell
avenues. At least one other person walked between two buildings in the complex and fired a number of rounds from a handgun at the vehicle, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Troy Hoefling. The vehicle was struck by the gunfire several times, but no injuries occurred, police said. The shooter fled the area immediately after firing the rounds, likely still on foot. Hoefling
said officers do not know if the shooting was gang-related. Spent shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to police reports. No suspects have been arrested in relation to the shooting, which remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident can call MHPD at 408-779-2101.

OPINION OUR TOWN JOHN MCKAY
Views of the Southwest
MH district, trustees and charters fumbled chance
T
he Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Trustees’ decision to withdraw a parcel tax proposal for the November ballot rather than share a piece of the pie with two local charter schools revealed much about the long-seething relationship between the district and the schools. Cutting through the political gamesmanship, where cordial public greetings and interactions mask true sentiments, it is safe to say the school district and charter school officials genuinely distrust one another. It doesn’t take any inside information to draw that conclusion. At a June 19 meeting, where a 5-1 vote reversed an earlier decision and prevented a $1.5 million-per-year parcel tax from going before voters, Board President Tom Arnett said “irreconcilable differences” keep the district and charter brass from agreeing on just about anything. Unfortunately, Arnett, who sits on the board until the end of the month but whose children were in the charter school pipeline until recently, was correct in his assessment. Using a parcel tax proposal to repair years of bad blood was a pipe dream of some wellintended trustees. All sides—the school district, Charter School of Morgan Hill and Voices Collegebound Language Academy—are to blame in this one, and they all miss out on valuable funds that could have helped better educate students, improve facilities and limit looming budget cuts to staff and programs. The MHUSD trustees also should be included in the blame since the decision was ultimately theirs to make. Board Vice President Mary Patterson, one of three trustees to change her vote from one meeting to the next, spoke to this, admirably falling on the sword by blaming herself and the entire school board for failing to procure a final parcel tax resolution for the Nov. 6 ballot.

But from the district’s “I’m taking my ball and going home” approach to both charter schools’ laissez-faire, noncommittal maneuvering in the days that followed the initial May 15 vote (later overturned), the $75 five-year parcel tax measure never stood a chance. Whether it would have passed, with or without charter inclusion, will never be known.
All sides are to blame in this one and they all miss out on valuable funds that could have helped better educate students. Board members and officials left the door open for developing a future shared parcel tax measure, but it remains a longshot at best considering the parties involved. A memorandum of understanding is necessary, as Assistant Superintendent Kirsten Perez said, before any tax revenues can be adequately shared and allocated. That seems unlikely considering that the district and Charter School of Morgan Hill (the district is the local charter’s authorizer) have yet to come to terms on an MOU based on their five-year pact. This, along with the mutually distrustful relationship between MHUSD and Voices, shows that because of “irreconcilable differences” between the district and charter schools, they should develop their own separate parcel tax proposals. That is where the district was headed in May, and represents a good “new” starting point.

Last month I took a nice motorcycle ride through the great American Southwest. This trip allowed me to reflect on life a bit here in our little community. I set out on the trip seeking an opportunity to get away and live every moment the way I wanted—a luxury in itself that few of us really get to experience very often. The morning after a Planning Commission meeting, I awoke to two weeks clear of commitments, put on a warm jacket, jumped on my motorcycle and headed out on a wonderfully cool morning need to. I’m not an expert in the study of regional politics and economies, but you can sure start to see how everything that makes up a region—from climate to landscape to dominant economic drivers—can intimately shape and impact lives. What really left an impression upon me in California was the presence of the oil industry and big agribusiness in the southern Central Valley. This area, dotted with small, “just barely there” towns, looked like you had to be pretty rugged to eke out a living. Maybe I’ve watched too many Hollywood “B” movies, but I just imagined people sweating and looking out a door at a dusty landscape longing to be somewhere else. This may be the dream locale for some, but not for me. Riding into Las Vegas always challenges my senses. Here is a big gleaming city where there really shouldn’t be a city. It’s a hot, barren place teeming with human activity. Riding around it, I see the seemingly never-ending growth. Once almost entirely based upon gambling and entertainment, the City of Sin has become a little more economically diverse, which promises greater job opportunities while maintaining important affordable housing. , levels——are much higher thanBut it is a big, sprawling city that feels so impersonal with chain after chain of restaurants, stores, everything… Past Las Vegas, you really get into the great Southwest. These are the wide open spaces, with so much solitude and beauty. The area is so sparsely populated that you really are left alone in your head on open stretches of roads. This solitude allowed me to reflect on how we so often compare other places to home. There are big cities, little towns and the ones like Morgan Hill, which are somewhere in between and just right. Do we really have it all? We have an incredible climate. We live in a beautiful landscape. Rolling hills to mountains to open meadows, we have a wonderful variety in our own valley. I could go on and on, but you know the rest. It may not be perfect, but it is the place I will always return to after comparing our home to those of so many others. DA: District did not report claim Cole, 1 Mr. Cole at Ann Sobrato High School, over a span of four years,” according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Barbara Cathcart. Police investigation reports and testimony described Cole as having repeatedly touched the teens on intimate body parts, over their clothing, while helping them change costumes for dance productions and lessons at Sobrato High. He also interacted flirtatiously with some of the teens, giving piggyback rides, bear hugs and tickling girls while touching them inappropriately, according to the police reports. While the DA filed three charges against Cole in relation to three victims, the jury convicted him only of misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child during the Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 productions of “The Nutcracker” at the north Morgan Hill high school, according to Cathcart. The show was produced by South Valley Dance Arts. During those incidents, Cole found himself backstage during the performance, offering to assist young female performers with “quick changes” into new costumes between scenes. In doing so, he inappropriately touched a 17-year-old girl, the jury found. Morgan Hill Police arrested Cole as he was leaving Sobrato Dec. 1, 2017, after a parent called
to report the abuse, and after officers took statements from his initial accuser, according to police reports obtained by the Times. Cole, working as a lighting and sound tech contractor for the school district at the time, was not supposed to be assisting children with costume changes or have any physical contact with children during performances or rehearsals, Cathcart said. Prior to the “Nutcracker” performance, Cole had been told numerous times by instructors and parents not to help students change, and to stay out of the quick change area. On the night of Dec. 1, the father of a female SVDA student told Cole twice to leave the area where the young performers were changing their costumes, according to the police report. Typically during SVDA’s quick changes, mothers of the student performers were available to help with the costumes, according to statements from SVDA directors. Cole is not related to any of the students who performed in the 2017 “Nutcracker.” Cathcart said the jurors found Cole not guilty of two charges, also filed in relation to backstage behavior at “The Nutcracker” at Sobrato, because they weren’t convinced his touching was sexual in nature. “The jury indicated they could not eliminate the possibility of
innocent touching during quick changes” for these two teenagers, Cathcart said. “All three charges required sexual intent.” Cole faces up to one year in jail on the misdemeanor conviction, Cathcart said. He is also required to register as a sex offender. Cole will be formally sentenced at a hearing in September. Three girls who testified in Cole’s criminal trial were not charged as victims because their allegations—some of which date as far back as 2014— fell outside the statute of limitations, Cathcart explained.
MHUSD under fire
It was also revealed during the trial that when a female Sobrato student reported Cole’s inappropriate touching and language to school staff in 2014, the district conducted a brief investigation and did not report the accusation to police. The district did not find the teenager’s allegations against Cole credible. “He was reported before, and the investigation that followed was very questionable,” Cathcart said. Cerri added the district’s investigation included only a series of emails between Sobrato drama teacher Christopher deMelo and Cole, in which deMelo described the student’s allegations and Cole defended himself. In one of the emails, deMelo said the student was having a “hissy”
because staff didn’t believe her claims about Cole. Cerri added that deMelo and Cole were friends while Cole worked for the school district. The student’s allegation was initially reported to Sobrato’s assistant principal at the time, Vera Gomes, who asked deMelo to look into it, according to Cerri. DeMelo testified in Cole’s criminal trial, with immunity, Cathcart said. While Cole was working as an independent contractor approved by the school district at the time of the 2017 incidents, he worked as an employee of Sobrato’s drama department from 2013 to 2016, Cathcart said. SVDA representatives have said the school district told them they had no choice but to use Cole as their lighting and sound technician for their productions at Sobrato, an MHUSD-owned facility. “The school district had notice from years before of Kevin Cole inappropriately touching students, and did not properly respond,” said Cerri, who is representing three teens in an upcoming civil suit against MHUSD. “School districts are mandatory reporters, and there is no evidence they reported him to police. They did their own investigation. Obviously, he went on to abuse students after that.” Cerri added the fact that the school district initiated an investigation shows they had enough
“reasonable suspicion” to report the girl’s allegations to police. Cerri is not representing the victim for whom Cole was found guilty in the criminal trial. MHUSD declined to comment or answer questions about the Cole case, “due to potential litigation,” said district spokeswoman Kimberly Beare. The district also declined to confirm what Cole’s previous employment situation was with MHUSD. DeMelo did not return a phone call. SVDA is likely to get drawn into the lawsuit against MHUSD as well, Cerri said. Two teen girls represented by Cerri will allege, as part of their case against the district, that the dance company was negligent. SVDA teachers, directors and former students noted the company has a solid reputation as a safe and nurturing place for young students. “Our studio has and always will have the safety of not only our dancers but our volunteers in mind,” SVDA Production Manager Tiffany Hoiberg said in a statement. “We have an amazing production team and dedicated teachers that work very hard for that purpose.” Former SVDA student Ashley Wellington, now a professional dancer in New York, studied and performed at the small Morgan Hill company when she was in her teens, she said in an email. She said their backstage areas are
Kevn Cole always “well organized” with at least 10 mothers on each side of the stage, along with the teachers and production crew. “SVDA is by far the most conservative and safe school I have ever danced at,” Wellington said. The Corsiglia, McMahon and Allard firm where Cerri is employed has gained substantial monetary awards in previous cases where they have sued school districts and other organizations that allegedly shirked their responsibilities to report or prevent child abuse. In March 2017, attorney Robert Allard scored an $8.25-million settlement from MHUSD on behalf of the families of three young girls who were sexually molested by John Loyd, their fifth grade teacher at Paradise Valley Elementary School in Morgan Hill. Loyd, who was convicted of criminal charges in relation to the molestation in his classroom, abused a total of four young girls from 2012 to 2014. He is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence.

County supes approve homebuyer assistance NEW FUNDS COME FROM MEASURE A Staff report
Santa Clara County’s Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved $25 million in 2016 Measure A Affordable Housing Bond funds to finance a new, first-time homebuyer down payment loan program, according to a June 20 announcement. Through a partnership between the county’s Office of Supportive Housing and Housing Trust Silicon Valley—which will administer the program—the funds will assist approximately 250 households over the first five years of the program by providing deferred loans for down payments of up to 17 percent of a home’s purchase price. In November 2016, County voters approved Measure A, a $950 million affordable housing general

obligation bond. A portion of those assets was earmarked to fund a loan program for first-time homebuyers with incomes not exceeding 120 percent of the area’s median income. “As part of our overall strategy to expand affordable housing options in the county, this loan program gives us the opportunity to offer many first-time home buyers a financially viable way to fulfill their dream of homeownership,” said District 1 Supervisor Mike Wasserman, vice chair of the board’s Housing, Land Use, Environment and Transportation Committee. As the number of loan assistance programs has declined over the past eight years, many potential first-time homebuyers have either postponed purchasing a home or chosen to relocate to find more affordable housing options, according to county staff.

“Affordable housing has been one of Santa Clara County’s biggest challenges for several years now, and it seems to get worse every month,” said Supervisor Ken Yeager. “The first-time homebuyer assistance program will give many residents an opportunity that would otherwise be out of reach.” The county’s down payment loan program does not require monthly principal or interest payments. Borrowers will repay the principal loan amount plus a share of the appreciation based on the percentage of the loan borrowed. Payment is deferred until the maturity date is reached, the sale of the home, or a refinance of the first mortgage. For information regarding the county-wide first-time homebuyer program, call Housing Trust Silicon Valley at 408-436-3450, ext. 234.

TOES ON THE LINE On Monday Gavilan head coach John Lango put his players through conditioning and agility drills. SPORTS SHORTS For most junior college football teams, local players make up the core of the team. The 2018 Gavilan Rams will have plenty of representation from San Benito County, but not so much from Gilroy and Morgan Hill. Recruiting isn’t over yet, though, and Lango and his staff will have a little more time to change the minds of players who may want to stay home to play football. He won’t have much time, as the Rams kick off their season on Sept. 1 when they hit the road to take on Los Medaños College in Pittsburg, California. Building a new future LANGO HAS GAV FOOTBALL HUSTLING THROUGH ITS SUMMER WORKOUTS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
After finishing the 2017 season 0-10, Gavilan football is brand-new. Well, mostly. John Lango, who coached the Rams from 2000 to 2010, is back for a second go-around, but for the coaching veteran, this is a new era for Gavilan football. And there’s no looking back. “We say there’s a reason why the windshield is bigger than the rearview window on a car; you got to look forward,” Lango said. Last season was one to forget at Gavilan. Before the season got off the ground, 17 out-of-state players were booted from the team because of what Gavilan claimed was improper recruiting and prohibited housing, transportation and food benefits. Head coach Mike Dovenberg stepped down at the end of the year, and save for assistant coach Rowen Tupuivao, the staff is all new. “I got the job on Feb. 13 at 3:30 pm, and five minutes later I was calling coaches and started to get a start on recruiting,” Lango said. “Recruiting is
the lifeblood of a team, and you need to recruit every day.” While recruiting is an everyday task, Lango got off to a late start. National Signing Day, the first day players can sign with colleges, was Feb. 8. By the time Lango got started five days later, many players had already committed to other schools. Lango has made transparency a priority for outof-state players interested in playing for Gavilan. Since the actual recruitment of out-of-state players is illegal, interested players must reach out to the school first. When outof-state players inquire about the program, Lango sends them a fact sheet detailing the cost of living in California. “It’s expensive to live in California,” Lango said. “It’s not that we don’t want them, but I put the cost out right away to see if they can afford it.” Because of the late start, Lango was unable to take advantage of last year’s Gilroy football champs. One player from Gilroy High, linebacker Marco Hernandez, will join Gavilan this year. No players are from Christopher High. “It is what it is,” Lango said. “We don’t have the answer, but we’re working diligently. When these young players decide to go elsewhere, it’s no hard feelings. We’re always here
if they need us. They are good players; they just decided to go elsewhere. We don’t ever want to lose local kids. We must do a better job this off-season. We also need to win some games and produce on the field.” On Monday, June 25, Lango was out with his players on the practice field at Gavilan. It was a hot, if not blazing, summer day. As the players lined up on the goal line, Lango led them through a no-pads summer warm up. “Run all the way through!” Lango shouted. “Pick ’em up! Nobody’s walking!” Creating a disciplined team for Lango starts well before player put on pads. Players are never allowed to walk at practice; they must always jog. Shorts and shirts must be school colors. For any player who shows up late, the punishment is running from a blue shed next to the end zone about 100 yards uphill to a pine tree, and back, three times. In between coaching stints at Gavilan, Lango was the defensive-back coach for Foothill College for two years and assistant head coach as well as linebackers, special teams and defensive backs coach for De Anza College. For Lango, losing the job at Gavilan the first time forced him to grow as a coach.
“In the end, it was one of the best things to happen to me; it made me a better coach,” he said. Pinning down what the Rams will look like is difficult at the moment. While Lango is determined to run the ball, how his team will effectively do so depends on the players who eventually take the field. “We want to be a physical football team, and I want physical and mentally tough players,” the coach said. “You can run the ball out of the spread, or we’ll use tight ends if we have them. It will depend on the personnel; we can’t be stupid. You can’t run the option if you don’t have an option quarterback, and you can’t run a zone read offense if you don’t have an athlete.” As of this week, six quarterbacks were vying for the starting job. Quantity doesn’t always equate to quality, however, and there are only a finite number of reps to go around. “I need a leader,” Lango said. “They don’t need to be vocal, but he needs to lead the team. ... We need a guy to run this program; it can't just be the coaches.” Since eligibility in junior college is limited to two years, coaches have a short time to work with their players. Still, legacies can be built. “A year from now they’ll know how to act and know what to do,” Lango said.
“When the new kids come in, the older ones will teach them. It goes, and it goes.” Along with sprints and agility drills Monday afternoon, Lango’s players hit the Gavilan weight room. It’s small, about the size of two classrooms put together, with equipment old enough to have seen Gavilan great Jeff Garcia in the early ’90s. But help is on the way. “Our weight room is not great, but we’re putting $45,000 in it by the end of the summer, and that’s a huge plus for us,” Lango said. With social media, recruiting has become an all-day, everyday job. To keep rolling with the times, Lango has asked all of his coaches to create accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep an eye on players. “I always tell them to think before they post,” Lango said. “I shared a tweet from Nebraska coach Scott Frost who said they'd go back 10 years to see what players tweet.” Lango is hoping for positive tweets from his future former players. “It’s about making these young men to be the best versions of themselves they can be,” Lango said. “I want them to come back in 10 years and say this was the best time of their lives.”
