High Speed Rail The public is invited to a meeting Aug. 14 on the California High Speed Rail. Representatives from the state’s HSR Authority will give an update on the project’s latest status; discuss the newest route option through Morgan Hill as suggested by the recent Business Plan Update; present an overview of how the right-of-way acquisition process works for private properties that are needed for the project; and answer questions from the public and gather feedback. Each August, 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters from throughout the county head to the fairgrounds in the culminating event of the year—bringing their projects and livestock to market. The four-day event, which included a variety

of fair food, live entertainment, carnival rides, livestock and exhibits at the county fairgrounds on Tully Road in San Jose, also held its first “Out at the Fair” event Friday, Aug. 3 in solidarity with the LGBT community. The county fair, in its 74th year, had such a large turnout that by Saturday afternoon on Aug. 4, fair organizers were asking the public to take Uber and Lyft to the fairgrounds “due to high attendance,” according to its website. ➝ More Photos, 12

Principal brings positivity to Britton

It’s about two weeks before the start of school and Britton Middle School’s new principal, Nanette Donahue, is already on campus, getting acquainted with

the staff and faculty that she will lead into the 201819 school term. Her positivity about what lies ahead could be infectious around the aging middle school campus, where construction got underway this summer and will be ongoing in various phases for the next 2½ years. Still, Donahue—who came from Evergreen Valley School District in East San Jose, where she was a

principal the last three of her five years there—can see the light at the end of the tunnel. “The construction is symbolic of the work we’re doing in middle school. It’s such a transition period for a kid’s life like the school is going through this transition with a new campus coming,” said Donahue, as she sat in the Britton principal’s office July 30. “Teachers can teach under

Central Ave.—funded through Measure G bond funds— will go a long way in transforming the physical campus, one of the oldest in the Morgan HIll Unified School District. “We are going through a transformation, both inward and outward,” said Donahue, who wants

With a little less than a week left in the candidacy filing period for the Nov. 6 election, voters may not have much

choice in local school board races. As of Aug. 7, three of five Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Education seats, as well as the Morgan Hill district’s seats on the Gavilan Joint Community College Board of Trustees and Santa Clara County Board of

Education, have only a single candidate, all of whom could run unopposed. Linda Tulett, manager of candidate services with the County’s Registrar of Voters’ office, said they expect a rush of additional candidates as the candidacy filing period nears the cutoff date. The last day to file for

office is Aug. 10. If an incumbent does not run for re-election, the nomination period for that office is then extended until 5pm Aug. 15. In five MHUSD races, incumbent Gino Borgioli and challenger Heather Orosco pulled papers for Trustee Area 3, while

newcomers Robert Guynn and Jill Provencal will compete for the Trustee Area 4 seat. Three other spots could be automatic with Peter Mandel (TA1), John Horner (TA2) and Vanessa Sutter (TA5) the only ones to file in their respective trustee areas without any opposition, as of Aug. 7.

At Gavilan, incumbent Laura Perry (TA1, Morgan Hill) is the only candidate who has expressed official interest in her district as the deadline looms. On the county board, incumbent Claudia Rossi, of Morgan Hill, is currently running unopposed for her Trustee Area 7 seat.

What does $1 million get you these days in Morgan Hill? If you’re a prospective home buyer, not much. Case in point: a small, twobedroom, one-bathroom 832-square-foot home on 1.5 acre at 185 Sanchez Drive. The modest home has an $899,950 price tag, according to Trulia.com. Described as a “great development opportunity” the knock-er-downer on the city’s west side serves as a prime example of skyrocketing home prices. “Sometimes an owner is adamant about a price, and no matter what you say, they want that money,” said Morgan Hill Coldwell Banker Real Estate Agent Jim Leslie. The high sales cost for area homes may seem intoxicating to local sellers, but Leslie warns that by overpricing a property, the owners may be shorting themselves in the end. After putting a home on the market, the first 30 days are crucial when finding a buyer. The highest price the owner wants to get, and the lowest price they can afford to get without losing money, together form a bracket. The sale price between that high end and low point of the bracket is determined by who wants to buy the property and how much the owner will accept. “If you’re above that

bracket, the house may sit on the market for too long and accrue days on the market before an obvious price reduction needs to be done,” Leslie said. “It can fall back within that bracket and crash. That’s the risk that you run.” Even with an asking price of $899,950, the property on Sanchez Drive owned by Domingo Mendoza and listed by Real Estate Solutions, is still almost $100,000 less than the median price for homes in Morgan Hill. That median is $984,480, according to Zillow. With

a robust Bay Area economy still booming, the dream of homeownership for many in Morgan Hill may seem impossible. “There is some truth to that,” Leslie said of those who cannot afford to buy a home. “Typically, unless you make about $250,000 to $300,000, or have a dual income. In Morgan Hill, the price of homes has risen 22 percent in 12 months.” So what will $1 million get you in the rest of the country? Down in the heart of Texas, where bigger is better, football is still king,

and the economy is booming, $1 million for housing goes a little further than it does here in Morgan Hill. In Dallas, a five-bedroom, five-bath, 7,933-squarefoot home on Bent Tree Hill Drive is listed at $990,000. “Enter this beauty through lovely courtyards,” reads the home’s description on Trulia. “Stately five bedroom custom home on over half an acre. Beautiful private backyard with pool and pool house. Large ballroom style formals greet you at the entrance. A chefs dream

in this oversized kitchen complete with granite and stainless appliances.” In Columbus, Ohio, home of the Ohio State Buckeyes, a stately fourbedroom, five-bath home on Scioto Estates Courts, spacious, elegant and modern, which sits on a wooded lot is listed at $995,000. It could be worse for home buyers in the South Bay. In Los Gatos, the median price for a house is $2.065 million according to Zillow. In Campbell, the median price is about $1.5 million, and about $3.3

million in Palo Alto. South of Morgan Hill, the price comes down to $799,800. For Leslie, Hollister, where the median home price is $504,600 and San Juan Bautista—$603,600 median home price—are where a home buyer can find a deal. “The most reasonable places are Hollister and San Juan Bautista,” Leslie said. “San Juan Bautista is close to Highway 101, but you don’t get the noise from the highway. It’s a nice community, and it’s overlooked. For whatever reason, it hasn’t taken off yet.”

armers’ markets represent a unique bridge between urban and rural communities that provide an opportunity to support the local economy, as well as access to fresh, nutritious foods. Aug. 5-11 is National Farmers’ Market Week. This designation seeks to increase the public’s awareness of the role local farmers’ markets play in creating healthy communities and in building prosperity among farmers and small businesses. Farmers’ markets support California’s small and diversified farms, and return money to our local economies. At a farmers’ market, 100 percent of your food dollar goes to your local farmer, while a farmer only receives 15 cents of every food dollar that consumers spend at traditional food outlets. Studies have shown that all farms, regardless of scale, are significantly more likely to survive if they have local food sales as a part of their marketing portfolio. Local markets also provide low-barrier entry points for new farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs, allowing them to start small and test new products. In 2017, 7,377 markets and directmarketing farmers accepted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) electronic benefit transfers, resulting in $22 million in SNAP spent at farmers markets. This provides access to fresh, local produce and enables SNAP recipients to purchase the nutritious foods their families need to stay healthy. A growing number of farmers’ markets also offer incentive programs to low-income seniors and WIC (Women, Infants and Children Program) customers. Unlike many supermarkets, farmers

markets put fruits and vegetables front and center and create a shopping environment where nutritious foods are not only affordable, they are celebrated.

At a farmers’ market, 100 percent of your dollar goes to the local farmer, while a farmer only receives 15 cents of every dollar spent at traditional food outlets. Studies have shown that all farms, regardless of scale, are significantly more likely to survive if they have local food sales as a part of their marketing portfolio. In the latest Public Policy Institute of California poll, voters said drought, water supply and water pollution are the state’s most pressing environmental challenges. Californians recognize that water fuels our economy, grows our food and sustains our natural places. Here are some of the perils: • During the recent drought, small communities in the San Joaquin Valley literally ran out of water • Upwards of one million Californians do not have clean and safe water in their homes • Aquifers, which provide between 30 and 60 percent of our annual water supply, are severely depleted • Many farming communities face uncertain water supplies year-to-year • More than 82 percent of California’s native freshwater fish will be extinct in the next century, some studies show Climate change, which brings more frequent and severe droughts and flooding, compounds all this. These facts should compel action. And they have, but only to an extent. During our epic drought, California lawmakers passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act to balance our groundwater supplies. That same year, state voters approved a $7 billion bond to fund construction of vital water projects. On June 5, voters approved Proposition 68, providing $2 billion for water projects. And lawmakers have passed new water efficiency standards for cities and farms. These improvements are part of Gov. Jerry Brown’s Water Action Plan to strengthen California’s water future. Much work remains. Tonight, one in 40 Californians live in homes that draw on unsafe drinking water. In response, community-based groups and agricultural leaders have forged a solution to fund water pollution treatment in poor communities (bonds cannot fund ongoing activities like this). In the closing days of the legislative session, lawmakers should prioritize enacting this Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund, originally introduced in Senate Bill 623 by Sen. Bill Monning, whose 17th District includes Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The next governor will take office in less than six months. The new administration should prioritize water and build on progress made by this administration. High on this list should be capturing winter rain by getting more water into aquifers. We waste billions of gallons of water each year that could be captured for use during dry months. Also promising is modernizing water infrastructure to work better for people and nature. Expanding floodplains in parts of the Central Valley can reduce flood risks while expanding habitat for endangered salmon. Judge orders Harmon to pay $248K FORMER SOBRATO TEACHERS PLAN TO APPEAL CIVIL JUDGMENT Michael Moore Editor

Former Sobrato High School teacher Gary Harmon, who is accused of bilking investors to the tune of half a million dollars, was ordered by a judge in civil court last month to pay one of his alleged victims $248,000— even though Harmon was the one demanding damages for defamation and other offenses. The alleged victim, Morgan Hill resident Mike DiRubio, who previously reported Harmon to police for embezzling money from him, said he feels vindicated by the civil judgment. The civil lawsuit is separate from and has no bearing on the criminal complaint charging Harmon with five felonies in relation to the alleged theft of about $500,000 from four victims in Morgan Hill. Harmon, 42, will next appear in court on those charges 1:30pm Aug. 30 at South County Courthouse. But Harmon also faces monetary damages in the civil defamation lawsuit that he and business partner Mark Masoni filed against DiRubio.

Harmon and Masoni, both former teachers at Sobrato, filed the lawsuit in July 2015. The complaint claims that DiRubio defamed their character by posting social media comments and sending emails to third parties stating that Harmon and Masoni stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from him after they convinced DiRubio to invest in their production company, ISE Entertainment. DiRubio has maintained that after investing about $250,000 for ownership shares of ISE Entertainment in 2013, Harmon simply kept the money; and both Harmon and Masoni reneged on their promise to repay him with recurring income. Harmon and Masoni’s lawsuit also claims DiRubio damaged their reputation and revenue opportunities by telling ISE’s vendors and potential investors to avoid doing business with Harmon and Masoni because the company is being run by “thieves,” reads Superior Court Judge Carrie Zepeda’s summary contained in her July 27 judgment. The judge ruled that “the gist” of DiRubio’s unflattering comments about Harmon and Masoni were true, and thus not defamatory. The written ruling notes that, based on testimony and evidence presented at a bench trial in November 2017, the Morgan Hill Police investigation and district attorney’s charges

against Harmon show that DiRubio had a strong case for his accusations of theft. Zepeda’s ruling also includes a list of unsavory or careless actions on the part of ISE Entertainment, Harmon and Masoni that cripple the plaintiffs’ credibility, including the fact that both testified that nobody had been tasked with keeping financial records of the company’s transactions. “(The) facts show Mr. Harmon and Mr. Masoni to be less than credible and that they have a history of fabricating evidence in and outside of court proceedings in an attempt to gain an advantage,” reads part of Zepeda’s ruling. “In addition, it is highly unusual and suspicious that a business keeps no financial records of its transactions and losses. To add to the cloud of suspicion, ISE Entertainment was not registered with the Secretary of State to conduct business in California, despite producing several concerts in the state. Furthermore, it appears that ISE did not complete tax returns for the business it conducted in the state.” Zepeda also ruled that Harmon and Masoni have no cause to claim DiRubio breached his fiduciary duty to ISE Entertainment because there was no record that he had such a duty, and DiRubio was “duped into believing” he had a stake in the company. Harmon and Masoni sought $2.5 million in

Instead, the judge ruled that the plaintiffs will “take nothing by way of their complaint” and they owe DiRubio $248,000. DiRubio must return his shared in ISE Entertainment to the company—shares that DiRubio said “are not worth the paper they’re printed on.” Harmon and Masoni filed objections to the judge’s tentative ruling in June. However, those were rejected by Zepeda, who issued the final ruling in late July. DiRubio’s attorney, Carlos Martinez, said he was pleased that “justice prevailed” in the civil case, but now he faces the difficult task of collecting $248,000 from Harmon and Masoni. “I’m happy Mike prevailed—he said what he said (about Harmon and Masoni), but he was justified in saying it,” Martinez said. Harmon and Masoni plan to appeal Zepeda’s ruling, according to their attorney. “Mr. Harmon and the other plaintiffs respectfully

disagree with the trial court’s statement of decision and judgment,” said attorney Dhaivat H. Shah. “Plaintiffs were the victims of acts of defamation for which they have not yet been provided a remedy. Plaintiffs intend to address their concerns with the California Court of Appeal.” Harmon, DiRubio and Masoni also worked together for the production company ARTTEC, which was highly active in 2013 and 2014 producing concerts and bringing celebrities to Morgan Hill. The company—which had a stated goal of helping young people get started on careers in entertainment production—brought such acts as Kiefer Sutherland, Queensryche, Survivor, Greg Kihn and Bret Michaels to local venues. In recent years, Harmon has filed a number of civil lawsuits against others who have accused him of fraud. In the criminal case, Harmon is charged with two counts of grand theft and three counts of

communications containing untrue statements and omissions of fact, in relation to the embezzlement of more than $500,000 from four local victims. If convicted, he faces up to 16 years in prison. He was arrested March 23, 2017 in Las Vegas on a warrant from Morgan Hill Police. Harmon allegedly convinced his victims to invest in his production companies or projects, with promises of repayment that never materialized. Police reports claim Harmon exaggerated or fabricated relationships with beloved celebrities—including country music legend Willie Nelson, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and former Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil— to fraudulently sell hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of investments to the marks, according to police. DiRubio is named as one of the victims in the criminal case. He has said Harmon not only stole his money—he also robbed his daughter of her college fund.

Suspicious person Police arrested a man on suspicion of auto theft after an employee of Rite Aid, 16000 Monterey Road, reported a suspicious vehicle in the store’s parking lot. The employee called police to report the man was sitting in a black Acura after the store closed, and the employee was afraid to go outside. Officers arrived and contacted the Acura driver, who was arrested on suspicion of stealing the vehicle he was sitting in. The crime was reported 10:35pm July 31.

Auto burglary Someone broke into a Toyota Tacoma truck on East Dunne Avenue and stole tools. The crime was reported 5:59am Aug. 1. A thief or thieves stole tools from a locked toolbox on a Dodge pickup on the 2200 block of Brega Lane. The crime was reported 6:24am Aug. 1.

The fire burned on both sides of Watsonville Road, from Honeycomb Lane to Highway 152, according to authorities. Dozens of homes along Watsonville Road—from Hecker Pass to Honeycomb—were briefly evacuated. The evacuation was lifted by 7pm, allowing threatened residents to return home. Two homes were damaged due to the flames, which also threatened two wineries before it was contained. “It’s a little too close for comfort,” Jill Fortino of the fire near Fortino Winery said Monday afternoon. Fortino Winery is located immediately west and south of the scene of the blaze. Sarah’s Vineyard is just east of the fire location. About two hours after

Two fires in Gilroy— one of which damaged two homes off Watsonville Road—burned a combined 15 acres of vegetation the night of Aug. 6, according to authorities. The first fire started along Watsonville Road west of Gilroy about 4:45pm. Four air tankers, two helicopters, and multiple engine companies from Gilroy, CalFire, and Watsonville and Santa Clara County fire departments battled the blaze in windy conditions. They carved a dozer line around

the fire to aid containment and protect nearby homes and vineyards. Due to dry grass and winds, firefighters worked to contain spot fires sporadically ignited by falling embers. “Things are actually looking pretty good, but it’s so windy, and the grass is so dry, that every time an ember hits we’re getting new fire,” Santa Clara County Fire Chief Derek Witmer said at the scene. “Because of that, we’re going to keep the helicopters on.” Fire crews had that blaze about 60 percent contained by 5:45pm Aug. 6. By the morning of Aug. 7, the fire was about 90 percent contained, according to CalFire Fire Prevention Specialist Pam Temmermand.

That fire started about 9pm and

burned 3.5 acres of vegetation before firefighters could extinguish it. The Roop fire was about 70 percent contained by the morning of Aug. 7. No structures were

involved in the Roop Road fire, Temmermand said. No injuries were reported from either of the two Aug. 6 fires. The cause of both blazes is under investigation.

Pedestrian, motorcylclist are latest fatalities SEPARATE INCIDENTS ON AUG.2,3 CLAIM LIVES Staff report

Two motorists died in separate traffic accidents in Gilroy late last week— one on foot after he exited his vehicle following a collision on the freeway, and the other a motorcyclist who was struck by a drunken driver on Watsonville Road, according to police. About 9:38pm Aug. 2, Todd Elmore, 53, was driving a black Ford Crown Victoria northbound on

U.S. 101 at an unknown speed, at Leavesley Road in the Gilroy city limits, reads a press release from the California Highway Patrol. For an unknown reason, Elmore lost control of the vehicle in an area where the freeway crosses over Leavesley Road. The Ford collided with the west bridge rail of U.S. 101 at the Leavesley Road overcrossing, police said. The Ford was disabled in the collision, and came to rest facing the wrong direction within a northbound lane of U.S. 101, according to the CHP. Elmore exited the vehicle and moved into the

adjacent northbound traffic lane. As Elmore exited the vehicle, a Toyota Camry was approaching the collision scene from the south, police said. The driver of the Toyota saw the Ford stopped in the traffic lane, and swerved into the adjacent lane to avoid hitting the disabled vehicle. As the Toyota driver turned into the other northbound lane, she saw Elmore running on the freeway but was unable to avoid hitting him, authorities said. The front of the Toyota struck Elmore, causing fatal injuries to the San Jose man. Emergency personnel

attempted to render aid to Elmore but were unable to revive him at the scene, police said. Police do not think alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

Motorcyclist hit by drunk driver

A motorcyclist from San Jose died after he was hit by a drunken driver in an SUV on Watsonville Road near Gilroy Aug. 3, according to the CHP. About 5:30pm, Eduardo Gonzalez, 32, of Watsonville, was driving a Dodge Durango at an unknown speed, southbound on Watsonville Road. As the vehicle

approached the intersection of Pharmer Road, in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County, Gonzalez allowed the Durango to enter the northbound lane of Watsonville Road, according to CHP Officer Chris Miceli. The vehicle struck a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Dillon Oliver, 24, of San Jose. A 23-year-old passenger, also of San Jose, was riding on the back of the motorcycle. The force of the impact ejected Oliver and his passenger from the motorcycle, authorities said. Oliver suffered fatal injuries. Paramedics who arrived on the scene attempted

first aid but were unable to revive Oliver at the scene. Oliver’s passenger was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with major injuries, police said. Investigators do not know why Gonzalez’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic before colliding with the Harley Davidson. Immediately after the collision, Gonzalez attempted to flee the scene, according to Miceli. However, his vehicle became disabled at the intersection of Watsonville Road and Highway 152. Police arrested Gonzalez on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit and run, Miceli said.

A Gilroy-based environmental group says that for nearly two years, revised state regulations have thwarted its efforts to rescue steelhead trout in the Pajaro Valley watershed. Frustrated that the state agencies charged with preserving federal protected fish have effectively ended his group’s fish-rescue efforts, Gilroy’s Herman Garcia said he will be leading a 150-mile walk from Gilroy to Sacramento next month to draw attention to the issue. “Steelhead trout are dying during this dry-back season in our own waterways,” said Garcia. He is the founder and director of CHEER—Coastal Habitat

Education and Environmental Restoration, which for two decades has monitored the creeks of the vast Pajaro River watershed for trash and polluters and built fish ladders for steelhead spawning. The species is an andranamous fish, which means it lives its life in Monterey Bay, then travels up rivers like the Pajaro and its feeder streams each spring to spawn. When hot dry summer weather traps the steelhead fingerlings in tepid pools, Garcia for years has rescued them, moving them to free-flowing water. The purpose of the march, said Garcia, is to change the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife regulations and policies regarding Steelhead Trout rescue-and-restoration permits for volunteer like CHEER. CHEER historically has received permits allowing its volunteers to rescue the federally protected steelhead trout.

SAVING FISH Herman Garcia says state wastes water. In 2016, Fish and Wildlife suspended the rescue permits across the state for non-governmental organizations, unless they are accompanied by a statecertified biologist.

“CHEER in partnership with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Marine Fisheries service single-handedly saved our

fisheries and water quality—we were on a road to recovery,” said Garcia. “The state is denying our efforts with burdensome regulations.” Garcia said he

collected about 2,000 signatures on a petition supporting the march at last month’s Gilroy Garlic Festival. For more information, go to cheercentral.org.

“You will never amount to anything.” Javier Mendez needed to hear those words only once for it to have a profound effect on his life. Mendez was 12 years old when he heard those words from his dad, Norberto, who died in 1999. “He only needed to say it one time,” the 58-year-old Mendez said. “It stuck with me and from there I was out to prove him wrong. That was the driving force that got me where I am today.” That would be as one of the top Mixed Martial Arts trainers in the world. As the founder and head coach of the famed American Kickboxing Academy (AKA)—its current roster includes UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov—Mendez is at the top of his profession, with no signs of coming down from his perch any time soon. The unlikely story of San Jose and the South Valley area being home and producing some of MMA’s best coaches and fighters—Mendez lives in Hollister, Cormier in Gilroy, former

He wasn’t a good father whatsoever, but he did love us.” Tucked in a non-descript strip mall in south San Jose— just minutes away from Morgan Hill—AKA has another moniker: The house of champions. Dozens of pictures adorn the wall above the main training room, displaying the faces of fighters who have trained or are currently training with AKA. The list is downright impressive. In addition to current titleholders Cormier and Nurmagomedov, Velasquez, legendary MMA figure Frank Shamrock, Luke Rockhold, B.J. Penn, Jon Fitch and Cung Le—just to name a few—have toiled on the AKA mats. As Mendez showed a reporter around the facility, he didn’t bother to point out the photo of himself holding a belt signifying his status as a former kickboxing world champion.

Special talent

Like most of his peers of his generation, Mendez grew up admiring the late Bruce Lee, who became a cultural icon through his acting, directing and martial arts pedigree. “I decided to go to martial arts (at 18) in part because of Bruce Lee,” Mendez said. “He was a huge inspiration to millions of kids and adults, and still to this day he is admired because of his philosophy, what he did and how he was able to do it.” Even though he didn’t grow up with a dream to become a world-class kickboxer—I had zero ambition to be fighter, zero,” he said—combat sports gave him something to do. At 12, Mendez started to participate in open gym boxing sessions in the cafeteria at Sylvandale Middle School in San Jose, under coaches who would

UFC heavyweight champion and AKA member Cain Velasquez resides in Gilroy and AKA manager Bob Cook lives in Tres Pinos—traces back to a father’s words that have served as fuel for Mendez’s insatiable appetite to continually improve and stay on top of the fight game. “My father was somewhat joking when he said those words, but they still stung,” said Mendez, who was born in Mexico but raised in San Jose and graduated from Andrew Hill High. “My dad never asked me one time how was my grades. He never asked one time what I wanted to do (as a career). It was more like you’re never going to be anything. I’m like, ‘Uh, yes I am.’ I refused to believe that I wouldn’t be anything. I didn’t allow anything to get in the way of what I wanted to do.” Mendez and Cook aren’t the only San Benito County residents who have a connection to AKA. Tony Castro, a strength and conditioning coach who trains Velasquez out of his garage and also works with Cormier in a variety of capacities, is a longtime Hollister resident. But how did San Jose and the South Valley area become the epicenter of one of the most fertile training bases for MMA athletes? It all starts with Mendez, who was 12 years old when he got caught stealing a couple of crescent wrenches from a thrift store. The police drove Mendez back to his parents’ house and knocked on the door before letting Norberto know what his son had done. “Oh, you did well,” Norberto told Javier. “He didn’t punish me, so I punished myself,” Mendez said. I swore I would never do that again because it wasn’t something I wanted to do. I’m so glad I got caught because who

give instructions while smoking cigars. “They never showed me anything,” Mendez said, “but it was a start.” Even though Mendez had a father who was never there physically or emotionally, Mendez said it provided him with motivation of what not to be. “I’m going to be a man in every way my dad wasn’t,” he said. Mendez said his dad pitied himself and spent most of his money on alcohol and gambling, often coming home drunk on weekends. Although it was tough to accept, it served a greater purpose, as Mendez developed a chip—check that, a boulder— on his shoulders, allowing him to attack every opponent or goal with a tenacity that he might not have otherwise gained. “I refused to accept my life was going to be like his,” Mendez said. “I grew up around people (outside of my dad) who used the race card all the time. I refused to fall into that line of thinking. I’m not saying it (racism) doesn’t happen; I’m just saying nothing was going to stop me from where I was going to be.

I’m going to keep trying.” Make no mistake: While Mendez was refreshingly candid and vulnerable in talking about his upbringing, he reflected no bitterness or ill will toward his father in the slightest. Despite everything that happened, Mendez said he loved his dad and simply wished Norberto would’ve spent more time with him. And yet who knows what would’ve happened had Norberto turned out to be a better father and praised his son instead of saying Javier would amount to nothing? Would Mendez have developed that boulder on his shoulder, the very thing that became his calling card and helped carry him to lofty heights as a fighter, head coach and owner? Mendez spent 11 years as a professional kickboxer, winning the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) light cruiserweight title in 1992 and the light heavyweight world title in 1995. He’s trained some of the greatest fighters in history in Cormier and Nurmagomedov—and yet he counts the longevity of AKA as his greatest accomplishment and pride.
