Yoga meets goats

By Debra Eskinazi Magazine and Features Editor

Goats gathered on people for an original yoga experience on Saturday, Sept. 8 in San Martin. That’s right. The Original Goat Yoga has finally come to the South Valley. Lainey Morse, founder and CEO of Goat Yoga, said she came up with the idea in 2016. “It’s something that just kind of developed by accident,” she said. Going through a rough patch, Morse said MAMMALS REACH FOR PEACE Lisa Vogel (pictured left) leads the she would spend a lot of time outdoors with yoga class in down(ward) dog as a goat grazes alongside participants. her goats, and eventually she began inviting With its first San Martin event debuting last her friends to join her. month, Goat Yoga includes 30 minutes of A friend and yoga instructor encouraged Goat Yoga followed by Goat Happy Hour. Agricultural production in Santa Clara county last year grew slightly over 2016, according to the

2017 Santa Clara County Crop Report released Aug. 31. The annual report showed total county production and revenues, based largely in South County, were valued at $316.5 million, a 2 percent increase from 2016. “It is great to see another crop report grow to even higher values than

previous years,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who represents Morgan Hill and Gilroy. “I like to think of it as a testament to the county’s commitment to our farming community.” Wasserman credited the continued growth to the county’s effective implementation of the “Valley Ag Plan,” although

crop reports across the state showed increases because of the end of a multi-year drought and excellent growing conditions. The county’s top producers for 2017 were nursery crops ($82,951,000), mushrooms ($74,659,000), lettuce ($17,522,000), spinach ($14,616,000), and bell

peppers ($13,264,000). In 2017, 21 different agricultural commodities grown in Santa Clara County exceeded $1 million in crop value. Commodities that now produce more than $1 million in revenues are cherries, seed crops and timber. Those that fell ➝ Crop Report, 10

Plans for a new catholic high school for southern Santa Clara County, first proposed 14 years ago, gained new life on Sept. 5, when the Morgan Hill City Councilw revisited a plan to annex the proposed school site southeast of the city. The annexation is considered critical to the success of the project, and the council’s 3-2 vote sends the plan to extend city limits to the Santa Clara County Local Agency Formation Committee, which effectively has veto power over any proposed annexation. The committee rejected an earlier version two years ago. Undeterred, the Roman Catholic Bishop of San Jose has updated its school plans, and city business and political leaders have scaled back the annexation plan in hopes of making it more attractive to the committee. Continuing population growth in southern Santa Clara County, its growing affluence and growing pains in area public schools are all factors that make a new private high

Healed owl soars More than 100 local wine and nature lovers gathered at Aver Family Vineyards, 2900 Soma Way, Gilroy, to witness the release of a rehabilitated barn owl Sunday, Sept. 2. The release, coordinated by the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC), took place at dusk, and owl watchers were invited to bring along a picnic and take part in libations sold by Aver Family Vineyards. WERC representatives were on site with staff owls Barnadette to discuss WERC’s wildlife education and rehabilitation programs.

OPINION FROM THE WEB Re: ‘Two arrested in relation to Friday night stabbing’ Punks!!!! Keep them off our streets!!! Becky Ruebsamen via Facebook

Re: ‘MHUSD trustees seek answers to ‘unresolved issues’’ Actually MHUSD needs to focus more on fixing the issues they have with providing services (or lack of services ) to their special needs population. Because they are the ones that have some significant unresolved issues. It is a known fact around the county that MHUSD provides the worst for their special needs population. Kelly Adams Byrne via Facebook

So now the school board is going to use divisive race issues to get Charter closed down? How about this: If the schools within the city limits didn't have all the negative issues, then parents wouldn't be forced to send their children to the northern end of town. Fix what's broken; stop trying to break what works! Nate Davies via Facebook

LETTERS

If MHUSD want CSMH to increase its student population of disadvantaged families, please provide them school buses, or even better, relocate them to inside Morgan Hill's city boundary. Otherwise, MHUSD's request is simply unrealistic and unfair to CSMH.

I am really so tired of reading articles being written about the ongoing battle between MHUSD and CSMH!! This has to stop! It seems the district is targeting CSMH all the damn time! If it’s not one thing it’s another. MHUSD didn’t want CSMH to move to MH so they’re out there in the middle of nowhere in south San Jose! Fortunately us Charter parents (who do not mind doing the daily 9- to 10-mile trek each way to the boonies) are lucky enough to be able to send our kids to this great school. It is a privilege for our kids to have the enrichment classes many schools in the district do not have. The teachers and staff genuinely care about our children. Our kids are thriving and love attending that school, they do very well in state testing. Yes they have diversity, kids come from many different ethnic backgrounds. Oh, what about the families who are unable to transport their children to the “far north campus” like the article stated? We have a school bus! Yes, that big yellow bus (that says Charter School of Morgan Hill on the side) that tows our kids to and from school. So instead of targeting our school all the time, how about MHUSD you focus on making your other campuses great and provide more great schools for all the MH children? They deserve it. Re: ‘Letter to the editor: Cordoba Center mosque project’ The county recently shared comments from the public and agencies such as the Santa Clara County Water District and LAFCO. There are some big concerns regarding this project. This is not simply a NIMBY outcry by the locals. San Martin, Morgan Hill and all unincorporated South County are under siege by opportunists eager to destroy these rural lands. Concerned Parent

CHRISTOPHER RANCH Workers at Christopher Ranch in GIlroy prepare garlic cloves for packaging.

Christopher Ranch boosts wages $15 PER HOUR MINIMUM FOR GARLIC WORKERS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

The approximately 600 workers at Christopher Garlic’s production facility in Gilroy in July received a raise that’s part of an aggressive plan to increase wages in the nation’s biggest garlic producer. The increased wages benefit not only the workers but also the company, said Ken Christopher, Christopher’s executive vice president. Christopher Ranch increased the minimum

wages for its workers from $11 per hour to $13 an hour in January 2017, and increased the company minimum again in July 2018, to $15 per hour. “We now offer one of the highest minimum wages in the nation, and unlike many other agribusinesses, we’re at full employment and even have a waitlist,” Christopher said. Christopher Ranch was stung by a Netflix documentary in January that alleged that it benefited from imported garlic harvested by Chinese prison labor. The company has vehemently denied the allegations that it uses any imported Chinese garlic in

its products, and believes its wage increase should go a long way to counteract any negative publicity from the documentary. Field workers are provided by the federal H2A Temporary Agricultural Program. Unlike many other farms, Ken Christopher claims that Christopher Ranch has had no trouble attracting farm workers. “They work at piece rates, and they are incredibly efficient,” Christopher said. “They make above our corporate minimum wage.” Gilroy may be the “Garlic Capital of the World,” but only 300 acres out of Christopher Ranch’s 5,500

acres in production in California are in Gilroy. “Fresh garlic costs between 50 cents to $1 per pound to harvest, with the variance depending on different fields yields and whether it was harvested organically or not,” Christopher said. “From there, depending on the end product, costs will vary wildly whether we sell it as fresh garlic, peeled garlic, roasted garlic or pureed garlic.” This year Christopher Ranch celebrated the Gilroy Garlic Festival simultaneously with one of its most robust harvests to date, over 100 million pounds. This bumper crop was due in part

to increased water and labor availability. Christopher Ranch will only sell American garlic, foregoing imports from Argentina and Spain. “We have absolutely not, never, used Chinese garlic, past, present or future,” Christopher said. “We take pride in our integrity. We’re not a faceless company. We’re a 62-year family farm that has had success.” Donating money and product to the Garlic Festival has been a longterm effort by Christopher Ranch and the Christopher family. It’s also a show of gratitude for the support that Gilroy has shown Christopher Ranch.

“Christopher Ranch and the Christopher family donated approximately $200,000 to the Gilroy Garlic Festival this year, with about half of those funds going to sponsoring celebrity chefs,” Christopher said. “About $20,000 was donated in the form of scholarships for the Gilroy Garlic Queen competition.” Christopher Ranch has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in new software to track mentions of Christopher Ranch on social media, and Ken Christopher has committed himself to answer emails or requests for tours of the plant.

Agriculture ‘continues to thrive’ Crop Report, 1 from the listing include celery, cut flowers, and hay and grain. “As Santa Clara County has evolved with Silicon Valley, the county’s agricultural roots continue to thrive and prosper,” said Joe Deviney, county commissioner of agriculture. “2017 marked a second consecutive year of increased revenues. Our agricultural future is bright. Agriculture from Santa Clara County continues to feed the region and the world.” The 2017 crop report highlights the unique history of Asian vegetables in Santa Clara County, reported Deviney.

He said about 80 Asian vegetable farms in Santa Clara County continue to be cultivated and harvested by hand. Most of these farms are still family-run and small, usually 10 acres or less. Asian vegetables brought in $8,876,000 last year, making them the county’s ninth most lucrative crop. “I am very proud of our community and respectful of the work done every day. We work so hard and produce many wonderful nutritious vegetables,” said Jenny Li of Shun Fat Nursery of Morgan Hill. “Most buyers prefer local farm goods rather than importing from outside of the Bay Area. It is important to keep agriculture local.” Chrysanthemums were

among the county’s largest agricultural products through the 1960s, but have now given way to staples including bok choy, celery leaf and mustard greens. The Asian community has played an important role in the valley’s agriculture history, with Gordon Chan, the first Chinese-American president of the Santa Clara Farm Bureau, helping lead the way. “It was delightful to see the Asian farming community highlighted in this year’s report,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese. “Especially the tribute to Gordon Chan, a truly great leader who contributed so much to the community.”

Council splits on annexation vote In March 2016 the committee denied the annexation request. A city is only allowed to submit plans to the committee once a year. With the decision coming a year later, the city submitted a request to annex only the land for the South County Catholic High School. The request was denied in June 2016. The annexation amendment would include nearly 65 acres of land on Murphy Avenue, between Barrett and Tennant avenues. The land is within the city’s urban growth boundary, but not within city limits. In order to receive city services such as fire, water and power, the land would need to be annexed. Spring asked city Principal Planner John Baty whether or not a hotel, single-family home, stores or gas stations could ever be built on the land zoned for Sports Recreational Leisure. Baty said that technically they could be allowed. The Rev. Steve Kim, who has been in charge of the project for the Diocese of San Jose for almost three years, says the church only wants to build a high school on the property. Constantine said he could not vote in favor of the project because he felt the plan still failed to answer the questions that had always existed with the project. He said he was not against a high school being built on the land, but said the rush to bring the project back to the committee would sow more distrust between the city and LAFCO. A 2016-2017 Santa Clara County Civil Grand

Submitted

High School, 1 school attractive to the Roman Catholic Diocese, which operates five high schools in San Jose and northern county communities. The church owns the land where the new high school would be built. The Local Agency Formation Committee (LAFCO) is an appointed body of citizens and elected officials, including Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, whose district includes Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The committee will vote as early as December on whether the land for the high school can be annexed into the city. Without the annexation, a school spokesman said, the plan cannot proceed. A vote by the committee could come as early as its Dec. 5 meeting. If the committee approves the annexation, the City Council will be asked to vote again on the project. That vote could be taken by a lame-duck majority, or the new council elected in November. Councilmembers Renee Spring and Rich Constantine last week voted against sending the amendment to the committee. Spring is not up for re-election; Constantine is running for mayor. LAFCO has denied the city growth plans that have included the high school in the past. In October 2015 the City Council submitted to LAFCO a series of landuse plans called the Southeast Quadrant for annexation into the city. The land for the proposed high school was included in these plans.

PROPOSED SITE Map of Area: outlined in red is the proposed site of the South County Catholic high school. Jury Report of the committee’s denials of the South County Catholic High School land annexation referenced that distrust. The city will use the Southeast Quadrant environmental impact report that was used to submit the proposed annexation in 2015. The Grand Jury cited the impact report as a previous reason for denial stating, “It dealt with the 38-acre high school site but not with an adjacent 22-acre area needed to connect the high school to Morgan Hill’s existing [urban service boundary] boundary.” Constantine said he had spoken to committee members who felt nothing had changed with Morgan Hill’s approach. “You keep doing the

same thing and expecting a different result,” said Constantine. Baty said this time, the city has more concrete plans for agricultural preservation and was submitting a much smaller project than before. While Constantine has voted consistently against sending the annexation to the committee, councilmember Larry Carr and Mayor Steve Tate have voted in favor of the annexation. Kim called the high school “a lasting legacy [Mayor Tate] wants to be behind.” Tate is not seeking reelection. Carr’s term will end in 2020. Kim said it wasn’t possible to use a site inside the city limits for the school, as LAFCO and other critics

have recommended. He said building the school within city limits would mean having several “satellite campuses,” which he said threatens student safety. Julie Hutcheson, City Council candidate in District D, spoke against the annexation, on behalf of the Committee of Green Foothills, the Greenbelt Alliance, the Sierra Club, and the Audubon Society. She told the Times she feels the city needs to work with the county and outside organizations to create a better use for the property. “Farmland has the capacity to substantially mitigate for climate change impacts because it can sequester greenhouse

gases at a rate substantially higher than urbanized land (estimated at 58 to 77 times more) so it can be a critical tool to help us mitigate for greenhouse gas emissions,” Hutcheson told the Times. Kim countered that the school will educate students on sustainability. He also cited the one-to-one agricultural-land mitigation plan that has been put in place. Kim and Baty also said the fewer number of cars on the road because of local students no longer commuting to private schools in San Jose would be a positive environmental impact. “We want to respect the environment,” said Kim. “We want to respect Morgan Hill.”

EVOLVING LEADER Sobrato High junior Jordan Sheets got called up to the varsity team late last season. After the Bulldogs lost their secondand third-string quarterbacks, they needed someone to back up then starter John Bell. Sheets took the challenge and has run with it ever since.

SOBRATO FOOTBALL

Sheets learning on the fly BULLDOGS JUNIOR QUARTERBACK IS IMPROVING AT A NEW POSITION emanuel lee Sports Editor

Late in the 2017 season, Sobrato High had lost its second- and third-string quarterbacks. Bulldogs coach Tony Holmes gave Jordan Sheets—who at the time was a starting sophomore wide receiver on the junior varsity team—a chance to start learning the quarterback position. “They brought me up last year basically to be the back-up behind John Bell,” the 6-foot-4, 180pound Sheets said. “I got game time, but didn’t throw the ball much. It was mostly all hand-offs.”

Knowing he would be competing for the starting position this season, Sheets used the offseason to gain some weight, get stronger and learn the position. It’s been a crash course in football quarterbacking 101, and yet Holmes feels the team is in good hands with Sheets—despite the lack of experience the junior has under center. “J.T. is definitely a project, but I’m continually encouraged by what he’s doing,” Holmes said. “J.T. has the potential to be a very good quarterback. This is his first time playing the position, so there is a lot of room for improvement. If you look at where he’s come from the summer to right now, you know he’ll be fine. He’s already good at leading the team, being a vocal leader

and keeping guys in games.” With just four healthy seniors on a thin roster, Sobrato has started the season 0-2 entering Friday’s game at San Lorenzo Valley of Felton. However, the Bulldogs know playing against B-level teams will prepare them well for league play in the Blossom Valley League’s West Valley Division, which is considered a C-league. “It’s definitely been a learning experience getting to know the position more and finding chemistry with my teammates, especially the offense,” Sheets said. Even though Sobrato lost its first game 51-16 and its second game 49-0, Holmes said the team did some things better in the most recent loss to Monterey. “From game one to game two,

we were able to move the ball on the ground a little more effectively, even if the score didn’t show it,” he said. “Obviously, we still have stuff we have to improve on in every area of the game, and we’re moving guys around to see where they’re most effective at.” Despite being new to the position and the sport for that matter—Sheets never played youth football—he seemingly has the disposition and temperament to excel at quarterback. He also has an older brother standout on the team, Jonathan, to talk to whenever he has a question or wants to bounce ideas off each other. “It’s always fun to have him out there,” said Sheets, who when asked if he was taller than Jonathan, said, “yes, and I’m

very happy to say that. It’s nice to have that connection with a brother so we could push each other and give coaching points to each other. I’ve definitely looked up to him for his work ethic and making better decisions.” Two blowout losses haven’t put a dent in the resolve of the Bulldogs, who look to improve with each passing week. “We’re looking forward to a lot more effort and fire under us,” Sheets said. “Getting smacked in the mouth twice hurts, that’s for sure. But we’re ready to get out there, stay on our toes, get the game speed up and keep our spirits up even in tough times.” The SLV game wraps up nonleague play for the Bulldogs, who open up defense of their title at Mount Pleasant on Sept. 21.

Live Oak goes into its Blossom Valley League Mount Hamilton Division opener at Pioneer on Sept. 21 with a 3-0 record after it produced an impressive 34-22 win over Burlingame last Friday. Jonathan Singleton completed 12-of-22 passes for 125 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 125 more on just seven carries for a 16.4-yards per carry average. Caleb Ojeda had four receptions for 48 yards, while also having another solid game defensively, totaling 10 tackles, seven solo. Mosiah Saulala had 13 tackles, inclduing seven solo, while Jered Brindle and Richard Cortez had 10 tackles each. The Acorns, who are on a bye week, open league action with a pivotal game at Pioneer, as both teams will come into the contest with perfect 3-0 records. Live Oak finished 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the ultra-competitive BVAL Mount Hamilton Division last year, and looks to improve on that this season.

DOING IT ALL Caleb Ojeda has been a tremendous all-around player for the Acorns this

season, contributing as a rusher, receiver and on defense, where he has two interceptions.

Acorns on mission to earn CCS spot LIVE OAK CROSS COUNTRY TEAM MOTIVATED TO RIGHT WHAT TOOK PLACE IN 2017 LEAGUE FINALS emanuel lee Sports Editor

Up and comer

Freshman Abby Paulson was the team’s second finisher at last week’s league meet in what could be a harbinger for the rest of the season. “She has a lot of potential to put up a lot better times,” Kiefer said. Returning junior Gillian McCaw, like everyone else on the team, looks to improve on her times from a year ago. Junior Aly Conlan, sophomore Nadia Aboukhadijen, Alyza Figueroa and senior Jenna Watson should be differencemakers at all or some point in the season. Conlan and Watson are coming off ACL tears, and both have unique situations. Conlan, who also plays basketball and field hockey, wasn’t actually cleared to play field hockey but got the go-ahead to do cross country. “She was someone who we weren’t expected to get but did, and that helps us,” Kiefer said. Watson is coming off her second ACL tear since

Chris Mora

Last November, the Live Oak High girls cross country team finished in 12th place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Finals to earn the final spot into the Central Coast Section Championships. It was a splendid moment for the team, something that had not been accomplished in recent memory. A day after the BVAL Finals, however, the Acorns learned they would not be going to CCS on a technicality. A team in the league finals had violated a rule, which meant only the top 11 teams were headed to CCS. Unfortunately, Live Oak was the squad left out. “We’re shooting to get back to CCS,” Kiefer said. “I know we lost (standout) Kaylah (Grant), but the girls are wanting to get back. We got bumped out by another team’s rule violation, so the girls still have a burning sensation after being told you’re in one moment and the next day be told you’re out. They have the fire to get back.” Especially standout sophomore Audrey Reed, who won last week’s league invitational at Montgomery Hill in 18 minutes, 16 seconds, a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher. Reed had a sensational freshman season in 2017, taking third in the

CCS Division III Championships to earn a berth to the state meet. Reed is always on the move; for instance, she often goes from cross country practice to club soccer practice on the same day. “Audrey is very focused,” Kiefer said. “She has that intense focus and desire, and it’s a coach’s dream because it’s something you can’t coach. Her goal is to win CCS and improve on her state finish, which last year was 35th.”

ALL ‘FOUR’ ONE Luke Sandberg, Gillian McCaw, Abby Paulson and Audrey Reed are four of the standouts on Live Oak High’s cross country program. The girls team narrowly missed out on a Central Coast Section berth last season. her freshman year, and she was only cleared to race five weeks ago. Watson and Conlan went to the same physical therapist and spent plenty of time rehabbing together, bonding in the process and pushing each other whenever things got tough. “Rehab is definitely not easy, but it’s nice to have a partner who is going through the same thing you are,” Watson said. “I’m happy Aly is on the team because we bonded a lot over our injuries.” Live Oak goes into every race with certain objectives, with the ultimate goal to peak at the league championships and

earn a spot into the section finals. For the first time since Kiefer took over as the school’s cross country coach, there are more girls in the program than boys.

Girls are growing

That reflects well of the girls team and gives it a sense of something special brewing. The Acorns do have a boys standout in Luke Sandberg, a sophomore who finished fourth overall in the opening league meet in a solid time of 17:42, smashing his personal-record by two minutes at Montgomery Hill. “Luke had a really good summer this year and he’s shocked how much

quicker he’s running,” Kiefer said. “He’s someone who was finishing in the middle of the pack of our own team, and now this year he’s leading the pack.” Watson has already accomplished a lot simply by competing for this year’s team. Watson has the misfortune of suffering two ACL tears—the first on her right knee during the club soccer season in her freshman year and the second on her left knee, also while playing soccer last season—and yet she’s running again with the hopes of having her best season yet. Watson had surgery in February and started jogging in

May. Even though Watson had a rough race, she looks forward to getting back on track. “I’m not there yet, but every race is a new day,” she said. Kiefer had a general sense of well being after the first league meet, noting the initial race is usually a tough one for a variety of reasons. “The first one is always the hardest because some kids are not sure what to expect,” he said. “Some of them are not where they should be at this point of the season, but this gives them a sense of what to anticipate going forward. It was a good first meet.”

OBITUARIES WADE BERRY SR.

H

ave you’ve ever basked in the beauty of the majestic Oak Trees on Miller Avenue? Were you ever in awe by the sheer size of the mighty Pines of Christmas Hill Park? If you have, chances are they were once cared for by this man, Wade Berry Sr.

Wade Berry Sr. was born March 12, 1949 in Oakland California to the loving Larry and Winnie Berry. He moved to Los Banos his senior year of high school where he graduated from Los Banos High. Shortly after his graduation he moved to Gilroy to attend Gavilan Community College where he met his wife, the former Rosemarie Blanco. While working hard to pay his tuition as a member of the cafeteria staff, Wade joined the Gavilan Rams Football Squad’s defensive backfield, sporting the No. 21 jersey. It was here that he ran a 64 yard punt return and achieved a long standing record, lasting several years. During his enrollment at Gavilan, Wade was given the opportunity to work for the City of Gilroy as an Arbor Maintenance Specialist. This dangerous trade is both an art and a science that he managed to pick up very quickly. Day or night. Rain or shine. He was called upon when a tree was in danger of falling onto property or power lines. When Christmas came around though, Wade was tasked with installing decorations on all the light poles in Downtown Gilroy. Although he was not a big fan of the winter, this was something he looked forward to and enjoyed every year. Wade would continue to service his community of Gilroy for the next 32 years in this profession caring for trees of all sorts while keeping us all out of harm’s way. Wade’s love for his community was only surpassed by his love for his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Rosemarie and his three children Monica (Michael), Wade Jr. (Erica) and Ken (Alaya). He will also be missed by his four grandchildren, Marissa, Halle, Mikey and Haydyn. Upon retiring at the age of 55, Wade lived each day doing what he loved most, spending time with his family. Whether it was trips to the happiest place on earth or fishing in the waters of Los Banos, he took much pride and joy in sharing his love and light with those around him. Wade Berry Sr. passed on in his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday morning, September 9, 2018. He was a great man and even greater father and husband. He will be missed as much as he was loved. A short service will be held Saturday September 15, 2018, 3pm at the Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. A reception to celebrate his memory to follow at the Veteran’s Memorial Building.
