A former priest who has faced multiple accusations of child molestation was assigned to St. Catherine Parish in Morgan Hill shortly after he was convicted of sexual misconduct in 1983, according to a recently published list of area clergy accused of similar crimes dating back more than 60 years. The offending priest, Hernan Toro, 90, is currently in jail on unrelated sexual misconduct charges stemming from a 2017 criminal investigation by San Jose Police, according to court records. Toro is one of 15 priests on a list of area Catholic clergy who have been credibly accused of sexual

About 120 children crafted with visiting artist Rachel-Anne Palacios during Morgan Hill Library’s Dia de los Muertos
Family Crafts event on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Community Librarian Heather Geddes said people made a variety of crafts including “mini ofrendas (or altars to the dead), calavera banks and repujado, a special type of metal art.” Palacios also shared her knowledge of ofrendas and spoke about the meanings of the different elements of an ofrenda, demonstrating
with an actual ofrenda she had set up at the library. Geddes credits librarians Hylary Locsin and Jeannine Gonzalez with the idea for a Dia de los Muertos craft party and said it coincided with the Santa Clara County Library District's celebration of National Hispanic Heritage month, which area libraries celebrated with different events highlighting Latino culture, including
the Oct. 17 Dia de los Muertos crafting event. “We have not done this specific craft in the past; however, we have done other events celebrating Latino culture during past National Hispanic Heritage Months,” said Geddes. “The library’s mission is to be an open forum promoting knowledge, ideas and cultural enrichment and we hope
to continue providing events that celebrate the many cultures, history and contributions of our community’s residents.” For more about Hispanic Heritage Month and other library events, visit: sccl.org. Santa Clara County settles jail lawsuit AUTHORITIES MUST IMPROVE SCREENING, SERVICES FOR INMATES Staff report
After three years of negotiations, the Prison Law Office, Cooley LLP, and Santa Clara County have reached a settlement in a
class action lawsuit alleging that some conditions in the county jails are unconstitutional, county staff reported Oct. 23. The current settlement in the case Chavez v. County of Santa Clara, which is subject to court approval, binds the county to significant existing and future commitments to improve living conditions for inmates confined in the jail. County staff
said the county and sheriff ’s office began addressing these conditions more than three years ago. The settlement results from several years of negotiations between the Prison Law Office, Cooley LLP, and the county regarding the alleged unconstitutional conditions in the jails, county staff said in a press release. “Although the negotiations were long and
difficult, the outcome will result in dramatic improvements to the jails that will help reduce recidivism,” said Donald Spector, executive director of the Prison Law Office. “During this process, Sheriff Laurie Smith and the county demonstrated leadership and complete transparency and dedication to finding solutions that addressed the deficiencies (including

The threatening message was recycled and recirculated on social media since “the exact same message threat was seen recently in an Arizona school,” according to Betando’s message to MHUSD employees. However, Morgan Hill, San Jose and Santa Clara police were among those who investigated the threat and eventually deemed it as not credible. “Those who threaten the well-being of others or cause fear and disruption will be held accountable and prosecuted,” wrote Betando to his staff prior to MHPD concluding its investigation. “We understand criminal acts of threats can cause panic and fear.” Betando also posted a message Oct. 22 on the MHUSD Facebook page “asking parents to send their children to school under our care.” In addressing MHUSD employees, Betando concluded, “I appreciate the extra resilience it takes for all of us to do our jobs especially when such criminal messages create anxiety and disruption. Morgan Hill Police determined that a threatening message discovered Oct. 21 on Snapchat was not aimed at Britton Middle School and instead originated in another state. By early Oct. 22, MHPD announced there was no credible threat to the school. However, the social media post alarmed local families and put school officials and police on alert as they maintained “a presence at the school all day,” according to MHPD’s Facebook Page post. Britton is located at 80 W. Central Ave. just north of the downtown. Since learning of the possible threat to Britton on Sunday, MHPD immediately began investigating. Morgan Hill Unified School District Superintendent Steve Betando was at Britton Monday morning along with other district staff. “Our Morgan Hill
Police are not only investigating, but there will be a presence of officers on the Britton campus throughout the day,” wrote Betando in an Oct. 22 email he sent out to all Morgan Hill Unified School District employees. All Britton school events, including afterschool athletics, went on as scheduled Oct. 22 and for the remainder of the week, according to district staff. Several social media postings on Snapchat were discovered over the weekend and looked at “as threats of violence against schools in the Bay Area.” The one alleged to take aim at Britton stated, “Attention Everybody that goes to BMS I will be shooting up the school on Monday afternoon.” MHPD posted on its Facebook page Oct. 21 that officers “are investigating the validity of this threat and taking it very seriously. It has been determined that this is a regional threat and may not be specific to a Morgan Hill school. Other jurisdictions are involved and also investigating.”
DEBIT
Morgan Hill Unified School District’s Board of Trustees ratified a new three-year contract with its administrators that included a 1.5- percent pay raise for the 2018-19 school term at its Oct. 16 meeting.
The Morgan Hill Education Leaders Association, which includes school principals, classified managers and supervisors, settled on the new terms Sept. 19. The new deal “eliminates the board meeting stipend and adds language allowing the accrual and use of comp time with supervisor approval,” according to the details on the Oct. 16 agenda. While the pay increase is retroactive to July 1, a new longevity increase of 2.5 percent for five years of service at MHUSD was
added to the contract, which runs through July 2021. The longevity clause increases by 2.5 percent after each additional five years in Morgan Hill. Other contract details regarding vacation time are a maximum of 40 days of vacation accrual beginning July 1, 2019; and a maximum of two years’ vacation accrual beginning July 1, 2020. Other changes to retirement benefits were made in accordance with the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act.

STICK AND MOVE Azael Torres (left), Bryan Alvarez (right), found more than a hobby in boxing from coach Rick Mello (center) at Stick and Move Boxing at 7400 Railroad Street in Gilroy.
Youngsters inspired by Stick and Move gym LONGTIME BOXING GYM IN GILROY STILL OFFERS PLACE FOR KIDS AFTER SCHOOL HOURS Bryce Stoepfel Reporter
On the east side of the railroad tracks in old Gilroy, in an old square brick building that used to be a PG&E substation, kids spend the night punching each other in the face. Usually, that means trouble. But at Stick and Move Boxing, the longtime Gilroy amateur boxing gym run by Rick Mello, flying fists and hard hits come with life lessons, newfound confidence—and friendships. “The kids have a place to go,” said Mello, 83. “This was a bad part of town, but it mellowed out a little. All these kids come here, and they socialize. We kind of watch them to make sure it’s safe. We haven’t had any problems.” For $45 a month, every week Monday through Saturday, up to 20 kids at a time spend their after-school hours learning the ropes in boxing. It’s a safe place for kids eight years old to 18. Mello and coaches Jose Soto and Derek Shingu are there to watch over the kids, but also to coach seven boxers who fight in USA Amateur Boxing tournaments from Salinas to Sacramento. Among the hundreds of kids that have gone through Stick and Move, a couple stands out among the rest. Mello coached Kelsey Jeffries to a state featherweight championship in 1992 and Gilroy’s number one boxing family, the Guerreros spent some time with Mello back when he had a gym on Gilroy’s south side near the sewer plant. “Victor, the middle brother came in first, Robert didn’t come in until later,” Mello said.
“When they came, and the word spread out, I had kids coming up to my ears. We used to fight all over the place. When Robert came, the dad, Ruben got involved. When you get fathers and sons involved in this game, that’s when I step away. Blood is thicker than water. I’m telling the kid one thing, and the father is telling him another, and the kid gets all screwed up.” Two of Mello’s current students, Azael Torres and Bryan Alvarez, come from different backgrounds and circumstances, but through their shared love of boxing, they have formed a strong friendship. Torres, 17, is a senior at Leigh High School in San Jose and started coming to Stick and Move Boxing because his grandmother lives nearby in Gilroy. “The thing I love about martial arts is the discipline; it shows you how to put a better version of yourself out there,” Torres said. When Torres came to boxing, he struggled with his weight coming in at 220 pounds. After six months of clean eating, hydration, and exercise, Torres dropped to below 160 pounds. Now, as he considers his college options, Torres struggles to overcome his fear of getting in the ring for his first fight. “There’s something in me that makes me unsure if I want to compete, it’s a strange fear of mine,” Torres said. “I want to overcome it some point, but at this point, I want to train as much as I can.” Bryan Alvarez of Gilroy fights with a different kind of struggle. Alvarez has been fighting at Stick and Move for almost two years, and through boxing, Alvarez found peace of mind after years of struggling with trouble at home and at school. “I’m not the kind of person who goes out to parties, but when I do boxing, I feel like I stand out,” Alvarez said. Boxing has helped
Alvarez build confidence. He’s more talkative, and better able to express his feelings. However mounting bills at home has forces Alvarez to make a choice, work harder to help support the family, or keep boxing. “I need $1,000 for boxing, I need a new car, I need to help out at the house, and I don’t make much money,” Alvarez said. “I feel like I need to help out around the house, or I can do boxing.” Alvarez lives in an apartment in Stoney Court, a neighborhood Alvarez describes as, “one of the most ghetto parts of Gilroy.” The family still struggles, but his mother works to save money to buy a house and fix her credit. Rising rents in Gilroy may soon force the family to move to Los Banos, he said. Alvarez works as a cashier in the morning and uses his mother’s car to make deliveries for Door Dash. Torres has worked since he was 14, but even at 19, the realities of life have forced him to think of the future, today. “I’ve been boxing for two years, and I wonder if I put those years to waste,” Alvarez said. “But then I start thinking, I spend those two years, and if I can’t go pro, What was I doing with my time? It’s a back and forth, and I don’t know how to decide. There’s nothing to show that I am getting better. It’s a struggle.” However the struggles, Alvarez found peace of mind and friendship through boxing. “I met Brian through boxing, and that’s why we’re such close friends now,” Torres said. “We starting sparring together, and it was like, sometimes the best enemies make the best friends. We would go in and spare really hard. He would hit me with straights, and my head would go straight back. He bloodied my nose, but after we’d walk home together and laugh about it.”

Yeah, so how do you know who's lying? Most reported cases are not false accusations. Why would she want to put herself through all of that? For what? I'm going to stick with believing the victim first. Sandra Willson via Facebook
This twisted purity culture she refers to is definitely not representing true Christ followers/Christians; let’s be clear about that! This is not God’s care for his children.
line is that only two people really know what happened between Ford and Kavanaugh. Who’s telling the truth? I don’t know. Neither do 99.99% of the population, yet everyone is so opinionated these days that they start to intertwine their opinion with what they feel are their “facts.” What if Ford is lying? She just tainted this guy’s reputation. What if Kavanaugh is lying? Then we’ve got a sex offender on the Supreme Court. I don’t know who’s telling the truth. It doesn’t mean I don’t have empathy for those who have been abused. It means I don’t have all the facts. Mike Rodrigues via Facebook
Re: ‘Convicted priest was assigned to Morgan Hill church’ Organizations of all kinds need to focus on doing the right thing instead of hiding their problems and putting everyone else at great risk. Bottom line, the patriarchy and religion has suppressed women for years and years. It's time for something to finally change. Enough. Enough of men telling women what they can't do or wear, or what to do with their own bodies. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse which was then covered up by the Mormon religion, I know firsthand how hard it is for women to find our voices. We must unite and continue to stand for what's right. Sandra Willson via Facebook

CORRECTION Last week’s story, “Sellers tops all in fundraising” referred to City Council candidate in District B, Ken Murray, as having served on the Planning Commission. Murray was not on the commission, he is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
City manager evaluation Our City Council will hold some number of closed sessions to do a performance evaluation of Christina Turner. If the mayor holds true to form, at a future council meeting he will pat the council on the back for making an outstanding selection for city manager (I also endorsed the selection), and then the council will throw money at her so that she will stay in the job. (Is it not enough that we dug a new water well just a few yards from her home?) Missing from the mayor's comments will be any specifics on where Turner should focus her efforts to improve our city government. I am not one to say that the status quo is good enough, although some council members might. There have been some improvements in transparency, such as details of the evaluation of firms for service contract awards. And we might soon see reports on use of delegation of authority (where the city manager approves contracts without council review or public notice). But it seems to me that the transparency door still starts from a closed position, to be opened a little only in some cases. I asked why certain actions of the city's outside pest control contractor did not appear in the annual report; the answer was that they were not required to be reported and so were not. My second example is the boilerplate in staff reports that list which council priorities are addressed by the item. There is never an explicit link to items in the report for the priorities. Only once, during a recent discussion on annexation, was staff asked how their recommendations met those council priorities. I thought the staff responses were weak at best. On the other hand, the Urban Forest Task Force and the public meetings to discuss the gun control ordinance are signs that the city is making more of an effort to inform and engage with our residents. To that end, elected and appointed leadership, in trying to improve our city government, should inform us as to where efforts will be focused. Or they can just surprise us every few weeks, as they did at the last council meeting, with an item on possible shrinking of our Urban Growth Boundary as a way to protect agricultural lands. Earthquake drill stills playgrounds Schoolchildren pictured here on the playground at Glenview Elementary School in Gilroy—and at schools and offices in California and worldwide—“dropped, covered and held on” for at least 60 seconds last week as if there were a real earthquake. The drill occurred at 10:18am Oct. 18, about 17 hours after the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, and involved 10.4 million registrants in California and over 61.7 million worldwide. “The main goal of the ShakeOut is to get Californians prepared for major earthquakes before, during and after an earthquake,” said organizers. This year marked the 10th anniversary of ShakeOut, which began in Southern California in 2008. All Gilroy and Morgan Hill schools participated, as did the Hollister Unified School District’s preK-8 classes. San Benito High School practiced its earthquake emergency procedures earlier this year. With new wildfires threatening our local communities, PG&E is partnering with our customers in high fire-threat areas to accelerate and expand our vegetation management work. We will be examining and addressing critical vegetation across 7,100 miles of power lines.
In order to keep our neighborhoods safe, PG&E may need to trim or remove vegetation on or near properties in high firethreat areas. PG&E’s action plan includes the following steps: ■ Step 1: Our safety inspectors will be in your neighborhood to determine what vegetation may need to be trimmed or removed. ■ Step 2: If needed, we will mark trees that need to be addressed and contact you to discuss the results of the safety inspection. ■ Step 3: We will perform safety work shortly after the inspection. ■ Step 4: We will plan to begin wood debris removal within a few weeks after completion of the safety work (unless you would like to keep it).
KEEPING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFE
You can help keep your family and neighbors safe by maintaining defensible space around your home and property. We recommend you regularly trim bushes and trees, remove any dry or dead vegetation and be sure to leave space between trees and plants.
Now, and in the years ahead, we must all work together to be better prepared for wildfires.
To learn if you live in a high fire-threat area and what you can do to keep your community safe, please visit pge.com/wildfiresafety.

The 2018 wildfire season is already one of the worst on record — with more than 1.5 million acres burned and more than 1,000 homes lost. And it’s not over yet. With the wildfire risk increasing at an alarming pace, the 2018 wildfire activity is on track to exceed the 2017 wildfire season, which was the most destructive on record.

Diocese addresses abuse by priests one of the victims’ family, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Rebekah Wise. He allegedly abused one of the victims over a period of several years, when the girl was between the ages of 5 and 10. The other victim was age 11 when Toro allegedly molested her. Toro is in jail without bail, according to the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections website. The former priest is still listed as a sex offender on California’s Megan’s Law website. According to that site, he is registered for the 1983 conviction, but he is currently in violation of his sentencing requirements. The Megan’s Law site lists Toro’s last known address ST. His 1983 felony conviction of sexual misconduct with a child occurred while he was a priest at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Alviso. After that criminal conviction, which required Toro to register as a sex offender, he continued to work within the diocese until 1990. Among his assignments was St. Catherine Parish, located on Peak Avenue, where Toro was a priest from 1984 to 1986, according to the list released by the diocese. Diocese of San Jose spokeswoman Liz Sullivan said church officials are not aware of any accusations against Toro while he was assigned to the Morgan Hill parish. Local staff at St. Catherine referred questions back to the diocese. Toro is one of three priests on the list who was convicted in criminal court of sexually abusing children. He was permanently banned from the ministry in 1990 and retired April 1 of that year. Now, Toro is back in jail awaiting trial on six felony charges of lewd and lascivious acts toward a child younger than 14, by use of force, violence, duress, menace or fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury on the victim or another person, according to Superior Court staff. He was arrested by San Jose Police in October 2017 in relation to the recent charges, and has remained in jail since his arrest. In that case, Toro is accused of molesting two girls whom he knew through

Victims can also make a report to the Diocese’s Office for the Protection of Children by calling (408) 983-0113, or visiting opcva. ethicspoint.com. New laws open some police records BODY-CAMS, 911 CALLS, DASH CAMS WILL BE ACCESSIBLE Michael Moore Editor
First Amendment and civil rights advocates say the governor’s signature on two new state laws dealing with the release of police records will go a long way toward improving transparency of information and enhancing public trust in their local governments. Gov. Jerry Brown signed the two laws—AB 748 and SB 1421—earlier this month, and they will go into effect July 1, 2019. AB 748 will give the public greater access to police records related to specific incidents, including 911 call recordings, surveillance footage gathered as evidence, body-cam and dash-cam video footage, and other audio/video footage related to a shooting or use of force that results in injury to a citizen. Furthermore, CNPA argued that the new laws will assist public defenders and prosecutors who rely on police testimony in court, “improving the integrity of the criminal justice system” in California.
Kindergarten Roundup is on Nov. 3 Staff report
Morgan Hill Unified School District wants families of young children to know, “It’s Kindergarten Roundup Time!,” and district staff will host a Nov. 3 information event at Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. “Join us to create your
online registration account and receive your priority enrollment number,” reads the MHUSD brochure recently mailed out to households within school district boundaries. The free community event, which runs from 8am to 11am, will provide a preview of kindergarten and transitional
kindergarten programs at MHUSD schools. “With six neighborhood elementary schools (including two K-8s) and one dual immersion program, we have wonderful school environments and options that families like,” reads the brochure. At the roundup, families will be able to meet principals and staff members who will
be on hand to answer questions about their schools; receive a priority enrollment number for school of residence; learn tips to help prepare incoming students for school to get them started on the right foot; and discover what students learn in TK and kindergarten and what they should know before they get there.

Key points of the settlement agreement include: • For all inmates, the county will make several modifications to the intake and booking process to better identify, monitor and address inmates’ medical, dental and mental health conditions as well as non-mobility and cognitive disabilities. • For all inmates, the county will improve the
“For the last three years, the county has tackled necessary jail reforms in a collaborative, deliberative and transparent fashion resulting in improved conditions for inmates and their families, the staff and our community,” County Counsel James Williams said. “With this settlement complete, the county can now finalize its work on (its) larger efforts on jail reforms.” Smith added that she has “appreciated the professionalism of the Prison Law Office and Cooley LLP and the opportunity to work cooperatively to find
delivery of medical, dental and mental health care while in custody through reduced wait times to be seen for health care concerns; revisions to the referral systems; and changes to the medication distribution and verification processes. • For inmates with serious mental illnesses and cognitive disabilities, the county will make system-wide changes to the screening, classification, housing and management needs unique to these inmates. • For inmates at risk of suicide, the county will make additional efforts at suicide prevention through revised triage and screening
processes for evaluating inmates with suicidal behaviors, installation of suicideresistant cells and changes to the way the jail supervises inmates at risk of suicide. • For inmates with dental needs, the county will improve wait times and expand services to inmates incarcerated for longer periods. • For inmates with vision, hearing and speech disabilities, the county will improve its identification and verification processes as well as its issuance, retention and provision of assistive devices; accommodate these inmates in improved housing; provide for effective
communication and programmatic access; and track accommodations provided to these inmates. • For inmates who engage in violence and, therefore, whose contact with inmates and staff must be reduced for the safety and security of the institution, the county will use a new, innovative phased approach, developed in consultation with experts, to house these inmates in what will be known as administrative management. This new approach will include specific admittance criteria and a high-level review for inmates who are retained for longer periods of time; notice to inmates regarding
their placement; improved conditions on these units in the form of greater out-ofcell time and more meaningful out-of-cell opportunities; and an opportunity for inmates to demonstrate good behavior and return to a lesser restrictive setting. • The sheriff’s office has developed a new use of force policy and implemented extensive training to correctional staff on the policy as well as de-escalation and conflict resolution training. The federal court is scheduled to decide whether to grant preliminary approval to the settlement before the end of this year.

County targets Mt. Madonna fire hazards DRAFT PLAN WOULD TREAT INVASIVE SPECIES, THIN REDWOODS, ADD ‘FUEL BREAKS’ By Barry Holtzclaw Managing Editor
The Mount Madonna Park Master Plan approved by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in 2017 is being revised to accommodate new park forest property and reduce overall fire hazards. The County Parks Department recently acquired additional property adjacent to the areas of the 4,605-acre park that are currently open to the public. The county said this month that there is interest in opening these new areas to park users, and released a 196-page draft plan for protecting the forests.
The park, located off Hecker Pass Road, comprises primarily redwood forest and sits atop the Santa Cruz Mountain range. It is a popular destination for camping, hiking, horseback riding, archery and picnicking. The plan attempts to address growing concern about wildfire dangers in the park, report county officials. In more recent years, Mt. Madonna Park has been subject to forest outbreaks of tree diseases and falling trees in both highuse recreational areas and low-use backcountry areas. These events have resulted in largescale tree removal in highuse portions of the park. Park forests are also faced with additional threats that increase tree stress, including pest and disease infestations, invasive species establishment and wildfires. The plan recommends:
• Creation of “fuel breaks” around park structures, along paved park access roads, and along key roadways where the creation of fuel breaks compartmentalize fuels and contribute to regional wildfire prevention efforts. • Removal of invasive species, especially blue gum, which reduces biological diversity by displacing and suppressing native tree growth and contributes to increased fire hazard due to its physical characteristics (e.g., peeling bark, volatile organic compounds, high fuel loading). The removal plan includes some use of herbicides. • Removal of eucalyptus trees within the three identified large stands. • Proactive treatment of infestations of insects and pathogens, which remain a threat to the park’s forests.
In more recent years, Mt. Madonna Park has been subject to forest outbreaks of tree diseases and falling trees in both high-use recreational areas and lowuse backcountry areas. These events have resulted in large-scale tree removal in highuse portions of the park. • Selective thinning of selected stands of second-growth redwoods, allowing for a reduction in the number of trees per acre while promoting the growth of retained trees and their canopy. • Reintroduction of prescribed fires into the park. Prescribed fire is considered a highly effective and inexpensive tool for reducing fuel loads and treating

residual woody material generated during forest treatments. When used to reduce fuel loads or treat woody material, prescribed fire can help reduce the potential for catastrophic wildland fires. Other benefits of prescribed fire include accelerated nutrient cycling, reduction of brood material for pests and pathogens, reduced competition from underbrush, and
reduced risk of pathogen spread via material transport. The county is seeking public comment on the plan. The comment period on the draft documents will be open until Nov. 19. Unstoppable serves
“Sometimes her serve is unstoppable, and that has been a huge asset for us,” Oberg said. “She has a consistent swing and has strong velocity as a hitter and also has a standing float serve that is very effective and powerful.” With two sophomores in the starting lineup, it’s no wonder Oberg feels the Bulldogs will be a contender to win league championships for at least the next couple of years. The Bulldogs have plenty of firepower, with middle blocker Byrum developing into an absolute force. A co-captain along with Jones, the 6-foot-1 Byrum has incredible velocity on her attacks, which has led to her hitting at a high level. The team’s other middle, Medina, is a 6-footer and in the top three in league in kills. The junior didn’t get to play on the team last year after injuries prevented her from competing in tryouts. Medina leads the team in kills and has come on strong this season. “She’s been a huge asset, which was a bit unexpected,” Oberg said. “She’s been great for us.” With Sobrato running a 6-2

Hailey Jones is excellence personified on and off the court. On the court, she has helped direct the Sobrato High girls volleyball team to another strong season, as the Bulldogs entered the week at 16-10 overall and 8-5 in the Blossom Valley League’s Santa Teresa Division. Off the court, Jones is ranked sixth in the class of 2019 for valedictorian. A senior setter, Jones possesses strong leadership skills, something that Bulldogs co-coach Shannon Oberg appreciates. “Hailey has been the unifying factor between defense and offense on this young team,” said Oberg, who teams with Kayla Guardino as the Sobrato coaches. “Half of our team is underclassmen, and we needed an incredible leader, which Hailey has been.” Jones is a multi-faceted threat, able to score points on the front row with her ability to attack. “This year I’ve been able to hit and swing from the front row, which has been a big factor,” Jones said. “I’ve also been able to contribute with my serving and setting, which has been essential to our success.” Despite hearing whispers that she would be taking over a team in transition, Oberg credited the players for raising their games and playing for each other as key to the season. In addition to Jones, Jessica Byrum, Annette Angeles, Saskia Vaillancourt, Natalia Medina, Lizzie Santos, and Dina Mercier have been impact players. Angeles, Jones and Vaillancourt are the
three players on the team who play in all six rotations. Angeles, a dynamic sophomore libero, has been downright solid defensively. “She’s in the top two in the entire league in digs, and is just a beast in the back row,” Oberg said. “Sobrato is lucky to have her. She’s got really quick reflexes, is athletic and is an incredible attacker from the back row, which we’ve been utilizing. She also has a killer and accurate jump serve, which has been a weapon for the team.” Speaking of potent serves, Vaillancourt, a sophomore outside hitter, has baffled the opposition with her float serve, which has led to 50-plus service aces.

offense this season, Santos has been a key factor. The junior setter has been consistent and provided strong leadership on the court. Mercier, a sophomore, plays utility and has the highest hitting percentage on the team, at around 50 percent. “Which is incredible,” Oberg said. “She’ll be a player to watch in the next couple of years.” When Oberg took the job, she heard the doubters right away. That is part of the reason why the team came up with the motto, no doubts, providing the theme for the season. “The motto no doubts has served a great meaning to the
team, pushing us to strive and believe we can overcome any challenge thrown our way,” Jones said. “I remember taking the job and hearing people casting doubts on what this team could do,” Oberg said. “That they wouldn’t be able to do much, so we started the year with the hash tag no doubts. As of right now, we have a better record than at this same point from last year.” Sobrato communicates well on the court, and the players gather for activities off the court, strengthening their bond. “Our ability to be cohesive is probably the most prominent
factor for us having the success we’re having,” Jones said. “Our team loves the game, and we have a passion and drive to compete. We’ve been able to use our height and hitting to our advantage, and our new libero has stepped up and filled that position, which we really needed.” In a four-game loss to Leland Monday, the team broke the alltime school record for aces in a season, with Angeles and Vaillancourt both setting individual records for most aces and digs in a season. Angeles is ranked No. 2 in digs in the CCS, while Vaillancourt is ranked No. 9 in the section in aces.

Acorns still in good shape after loss HEARTBREAKING LOSS TO LINCOLN MEANS LIVE OAK NEEDS HELP AND TO WIN OUT FOR SHARE OF LEAGUE TITLE emanuel lee Sports Editor
Erica Bennett
It’s often said that football is a game of inches. Nowhere was that more apparent than in last Friday’s Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division game between the Live Oak High and Lincoln High football teams. Acorns quarterback Jonathan Singleton dove for the end zone only to have the ball knocked away just before he reached the goal line, inches short from what would’ve been a spectacular comeback victory. Instead, Live Oak lost 27-24, dropping to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Acorns still have an outside shot to share the league championship. Front-runner Lincoln (5-0) closes the league season with games against perennial title contenders Oak Grove and Piedmont Hills. Live Oak plays Santa Teresa on Friday before closing out the regular-season against Oak Grove. “It’s devastating, but we’ll bounce back from this,” said Acorns junior Matt Blocker, who had seven receptions for 84 yards. “We’re not going to hang our heads for too long. It’s one loss and we’ll have to get back on track.” Live Oak totaled 454 yards of offense to Lincoln’s 365, but it also lost the turnover battle, 3-0, including the fumble at the goal line as time expired. With the Acorns facing a
third-and-6 from the Lincoln 10-yard line with 8.6 seconds left and no timeouts, Singleton dropped back to pass before taking off for the end zone. He eluded a couple of defenders before a Lincoln player jarred the ball loose with a strong hit, setting off a wild Lions celebration. Initially, the Acorns were furious with the call, however; they know mistakes and breakdowns throughout the contest ultimately is what cost them the game, not the final play. “I was right at the goal line on the same side with Jonathan,” Blocker said. “I couldn’t tell if he was past the goal line or not.” The Lions, who are undefeated in league play, attempted only two passes the entire game—misfiring on both—totaled 365 yards rushing on 58 carries. They gashed the Live Oak defense repeatedly with their trio of running backs, basically running the same plays over and over again. The Acorns finally buckled down in the second half, allowing just seven points while containing the Lincoln ground game for the most part. That allowed the Live Oak offense to get into gear, and the Lions didn’t have an answer. Singleton and his receiving corps repeatedly picked apart the Lincoln defense, as Singleton finished 24-of37 for 270 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Blocker had a terrific game as did fellow receiver Elijah Fernandez, who finished with seven catches for 89 yards. Caleb Ojeda had six
EYEING YARDS Live Oak High quarterback Jonathan Singleton had another stellar game last Friday against Lincoln,
completing 24-of-37 passes for 270 yards and running for 115 yards on 15 carries. Lincoln prevailed, 27-24, in a thriller.
receptions for 57 yards, and Singleton was deadly on the ground once again, finishing with 115 yards on 15 carries. The Lions scored on four of their five first-half possessions. Ironically enough, the one time Live Oak prevented the home side from scoring in the first half came on Lincoln’s longest series of the game, a 15-play drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock in the second quarter. The Acorns trailed 20-3 late in the first half when Singleton found Blocker in the back of the end zone as time expired, giving them something to build upon entering halftime. After stopping Lincoln on the opening possession of
the third quarter, Live Oak received great field position after Jesse Isais returned a punt 45 yards to the Lincoln 37-yard line. Just when it looked like the Acorns were going to take control of the game, the Lions came up wit an interception after a Singleton pass went off the hands of a receiver, and Lincoln took over at its 8-yard line. However, the Live Oak defense forced a three-and-out, and Live Oak responded on the ensuing drive with a score, capped by Nick Lomanto’s 3-yard TD run around left end to cut the Live Oak deficit to 20-17 with 21.7 seconds left in the third. Neither team scored on their next possessions, but
the Lions scored a TD with 2:41 to go to seemingly seal Live Oak’s fate. However, Singleton connected with Blocker for a 21-yard TD with 1:51 left before Lincoln recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Live Oak defense came up with another big stop, forcing a three-and-out to give the Acorns one final shot to tie or win the game. Starting at its 24, Singleton marched the team down the field, running for 5 yards before picking up 27 yards on another run. He then hit Fernandez for a 12-yard gain before busting off another huge run, this time for 18 yards. That gave the Acorns a first-and-goal from the 10. After Lomanto was stopped for no gain, Singleton spiked
the ball with 8.2 seconds remaining, setting up the team’s final play of the game. Blocker said the loss hurt for a variety of reasons, including the fact that Lincoln couldn’t defend Live Oak’s passing attack. “They were playing off me a lot,” Blocker said. “They were 10, 15 yards off me, and if I’m being honest, they weren’t very good at covering. They couldn’t really guard any of us. I felt like I had an advantage on them with my speed, and I was able to beat them on the post every time and beat them deep. They weren’t able to keep up with me.” Connor Dietz (11 solo tackles) and Jered Brindle (10 solo tackles) led the Live Oak defense.

OBITUARIES RUTH EMMA NELSON SACCO
ANTHONY “TONY” VIGNA
February 11, 1920 - October 19, 2018
September 17, 1936 - October 8, 2018
R
uth Emma Nelson Sacco, the matriarch of the Sacco family, born on February 11, 1920 in Missouri, died peacefully at home on Friday, October 19, 2018. Strong-willed to the end as she had “places to go and people to meet”, she transitioned in the company of family. Arriving in Gilroy in 1945 with her husband Jim Sacco, they raised four children, James Nelson Sacco, Gary Patrick Sacco, Mack Louis Sacco and Molly Sacco Hale, while running their downtown business, Kirby Appliance, together. Preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and son, Gary, she leaves behind her sister, Reba Mae Cassin, ten Grandchildren and sixteen Great Grandchildren who all have the benefit of her love, her thinking, her compassion and her way in the world. She adored her family, spending quality time whenever possible and would have loved having them all living on the same block. Ruth was involved with many social groups in Gilroy: a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, of Eastern Star, of PEO, a philanthropic organization celebrating the advancement of women, her book club, FRFG and was an active participant with the Gilroy Garlic Festival. The family invites donations in Ruth’s name to Ability Production.org, a Spinal Cord Injury Support site managed by her daughter and husband and PEO International. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 1:00pm at the Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Avenue, Gilroy. A
nthony “Tony” Vigna died peacefully on October 8, 2018 in Goleta, California at the age of 82. Tony is survived by his wife Dolores, children Eric Vigna, Katherine Archibald, and Greg Vigna, siblings Deanna Goodrich and Marilyn Rocca, and his ten grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ida Vigna, daughter Elizabeth Vigna, and granddaughter Camille Vigna. Tony was born on September 17, 1936 in Gilroy, California. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 1954 where he was a Hall of Fame athlete in basketball. He was selected All Central Coast Athletic League, USA team, and the Northern California team during his high school years. He attended Stanford University on an athletic scholarship where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in History and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He began his teaching and coaching career in San Jose. After moving to Santa Barbara, Tony taught high school history at San Marcos High School for 43 years and coached boys and girls basketball and tennis at both San Marcos High School and Bishop Diego High School. He was also a long-time Santa Barbara Little League and Boy’s Club coach. Tony was a self-taught tennis player and enjoyed competing at the club level and playing with his daughter Katherine. Together they won the 1980 Equitable National Father-Daughter tennis title in New York. A memorial mass was held on Friday, October 26 in Santa Barbara.
